American Government: Continuity and Change.......2006-07-03
While this textbook may seem inexpensive, you must also purchase an internet code to use along with it. They don't tell you this when you buy the book. As for the book itself, it's a hassle to keep together. Thumbs down.
Book Description
This highly-regarded introduction to politics in America is clearly and concisely written, providing the reader with a great basis for understanding our political system. This Texas edition includes additional chapters concerning politics in that state: the social and economic milieu; the Texas Constitution; interest groups, political parties and elections; the legislature; the executive branch and bureaucracy; the judiciary; and local government in Texas. For anyone interested in our American political system; especially those with an interest in Texas politics, including government workers, policymakers, and politicians.

Politics in America, National Version by Thomas R. Dye [Hardcover] .......2005-09-22
I am well satisfied with the purchase of this book, Great seller and price.
good overview of government, though a bit biased.......2002-11-10
Overall this book is a good overview of the american political system. The structures of the beurocracy, executive, congressional, and judicial branches are covered very thoroughly. However, I found that the author inserted a bit too much of his own Republican biases in it. There is a whole section devoted to "government waste" - a common election tactic by Republicans. While it is true that the government is wasteful- all beurocracies are to some extent- a recent survey showed the US gov't to be the 3rd most efficient in the world. Also, sprinkled throughout the book are convinient three paragraph long and very shallow "Counterpoints" which try to convince readers of republican principles from the flat tax to the abolition of affirmative action. The most egragrious offenses come in various profiles "people in polics" of various leaders in politics. Invariably, the Republicans profiled have their personal strengths asserted with a folksy charm, while the Democrats are given a far away overview as well as mention of some trivial personal faults (Barbara Boxer's overdrafts from the House banks- a trivial issue in the big picture of things- is in her bio). And of course there are also the "Liberal ratings" in it- with the late Paul Wellstone topping the list. In addition to all of this, the general wording of the book and word choice used betrays the clearly Republican biases of the author. Overall the book is not a bad book, it does a good and thorough job at outlining the structure of the federal government, however, reader beware of the biases of the author.
Good introductory-level textbook........2000-08-06
I just finished taking a class called "Introduction to American Politics" and this was our only textbook. I found the textbook to be easy to read, clearly written, and factually accurate. I fear that many students, like myself, who have already studied some in this area may find the book to be too simplified, and will get bored reading about the basics of material which is already familiar to them. The book is great for the novice, but is definitely not upperclassmen material.
Book Description
We the People is widely recognized as the classroom standard for introductory American government courses. Maintaining a central emphasis on the relevance of American government and politics to students and continuing to highlight the importance of political participation, the Fifth Edition has been meticulously revised and updated through the 2004 presidential elections, including in-depth analysis of the Iraq War and the "War on Terrorism."

Textbook format.......2001-05-10
This book is a comprehensive look at Texas politics which in itself is somewhat confusing, but the style of the book tends to cloud the issue even more. It sometimes uses examples that are not exactly on point and if you don't live in Texas than you may not fully understand the point of reference it comes from. Overall though, it is a detailed and comprehensive. The book offers some great study questions at the end of each chapter. This book tends to really very frank with it's criticism of the Texas political machine and on occasion it leans to the right somewhat, but heck, this is Texas, what did you expect.
Book Description
Only Molly Ivins can write about redneck politics in her native Texas and the discreet charm of the Bushwazee and manage to be both brutally honest and unabashedly affectionate.

Great collection of Ivins' earlier columns.......2005-05-07
I subscribe to The Progressive, so I read Ivins' current work monthly in that publication, as well as any time she appears in the paper. And actually, I have not been a huge fan. I have felt that she mainly repeats the center-left mantras of the day, and works somewhat over-hard to craft and maintain the image of folksy, curmudgeonly, old-guard Southern progressivism. But I found this collection of older columns for $1 in the clearance section of a used book store, and found it to exceed my expectations. These columns, mainly from the 70s and 80s, are rich in the kind of political commentary that is genuinely edifying. For me, they provide a window on a time that I am too young to remember well (or at all), and teach me about the continuity between the political climate of that time and today.
But more than that, Ivins knows Texas politics as intimately as anyone. If you are not from Texas, as I am not, you might think that you are not especially interested in the culture and history of the Texas legislature. Or you might think that one state legislature is pretty much the same as any other. But I think you'll be surprised at the degree to which Ivins' "Texas Leg" columns are both entertaining and insightful. She may beat some jokes into the ground sometimes, but this book belongs in the library of any connoisseur of political commentary.
A Conservative Speaks Out.......2005-03-11
It seems by looking at many of the other reviews, liberals or those who would identify themselves with such label like the book and conservatives despise it. I suspect that most of this seems to be based more on her OPINIONS than on her actual writing. The book is more a tragedy than a comic opera.
Let me say that many of the stories are funny. Yet Ivins really can't debate an issue at all. All she can do is a 'reverse Limbaugh' and call anybody and everybody who doesn't see things Molly's way as a 'doofus' or an 'idiot.' As an educated man, I've long thought that humor is good for the soul and in some cases Molly does this well. But the vast majority of the cases have Molly whining about rich people or corporations - never once stopping to think that if it wasn't for a rich person owning the paper as an investment, she wouldn't even have a job. When your only obvious talent is the ability to insult people, your occupation pool is limited. (Limbaugh insults people, too, and I find his 'everybody agree with me' world to be dangerous territory; however, he does actually interview and interact with the big-wigs).
I must praise this book, though, for the column on the tragic death of former Senator John Tower with his daughter in a 1991 plane crash. I felt moved by Ivins' commentary - the first time the movement I ever felt didn't not begin in my bowels upon reading her column.
So I give the book three stars. It is a good retrospective of Ivins' early career and reveals all the shortcomings save one - we did not know then that she had plagiarized a lot of material from a CONSERVATIVE writer named Florence King.
I'm guessing she had to go to a conservative - those she despises - to get material worthy of being read. Oh, well, Molly's in the paper today, so I gotta go...
Most excellent and funny!.......2004-08-09
Like the woman herself, this book is a great commentary by the legendary commentator. Highly recommend!
Molly Ivins Can't Recycle That, Can She?.......2004-04-30
Apparently, she can. In addition to being one of America's most puerile, unfunny political pundits, Ms. Ivins is a prolific recycler of other people's works. But this should not affect her standing as a favorite amongst the drug-addled sixties retreads who read this stuff anyway.
Read this in high school and loved it.......2004-04-19
Then I grew up. Apparently Miss Ivens remains in sophomoric adolescence.

Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2007-06-26
The book is okay on the information it gives in the text, but the supporting graphs and charts are always biased against the south. Patterson adds unnecessary clauses that insinuate stupidity and poverty. Also, he will always ask questions about why the South is lacking even though the graph says otherwise. Also, he mainly only shows one side politically. If it isn't required get another book
What Democracy? Where? Whose?.......2007-04-12
A republic? Not in our lifetime. Lies, back room deals, murder, impeachment. The things we have seen used to depose those in office who do not walk the line. Citizens asleep, vote for the most popular, or the smoothest talker. No Veronica we have no democracy. More fascism exists in our government than democracy. Compare; A movement or tendency, or idealogy that favors dictatorial government. See IRS. Centralized control of private enterprise. What now does Mom, and Pop own? Repression of all opposition, and extreme nationalism. See Career Politician. Democracy; The free and equal right of every citizen to participate in a system of government defined by electing representatives, of the people. "Not of the dollar," by the people. "Not just the rich," for the people. "Not for Corporation Internationale."
I love my country but too, too many of us take our freedom for granted. Like any well oiled machine Democracy needs maintenance, but we do not give our freedom a second look, we rely on others, "Career Politicians" to look out for our interest. In reality these people spend more time "Dollar Chasing" to be concerned with a little thing like "FREEDOM."
Pick up the book read it, and many more like it. Understand what a true Democracy is all about, and your part in it.
The title says it all.......2007-03-05
America in NOT a democracy.
Why would you title a book this way unless you were a proponent of a democracy. If there is anyone that wants to know the difference between a constitutional republic and a democracy, they should seek other methods.
Benjamin Franklin was asked by a group of people as he left the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787.... "Doctor, what type of government did the delegates give us?"
Franklin responded: "A republic, if you can keep it."
It is no wonder we are in the state we are today. The students aren't even being convinced to learn what a republic is! They are told to study books that advocate democracy.
American Democracy - For dummies.......2006-11-10
I am brand new to the subject but found this book an excellent starting point. It has easy to read chapters and supporting graphs. I reccomend to anyone who may be interested or a text book.
will not age well.......2006-08-27
[A review of the 7th Edition, 2004.]
This edition will not age well. There is a small irony here. The book is meant to cover over 200 years of how the US government developed. Naturally, there is an emphasis on recent decades. But scattered throughout the book, and often prominently at the starts of chapters, are events from the War on Terrorism, and of recent (2003-4) political developments. In a few years, all that might do is uncomfortably date the book.
Then again, Patterson and his publisher no doubt intend to put out more editions. In part just to induce sales of those editions, and dissuade a reuse of older, second hand editions, for which they will derive no revenue.
Book Description
". . . a comprehensive account of the battle to make the GNA a reality. Skillfully bringing to life not only the players but also the issues, Mr. Locher, who was a prime mover in framing the legislation that resulted in Goldwater-Nichols, has written the definitive history of the Act."--Washington Times
". . . a monumental Washington battle in prose that is both exciting for experts and informative for novices . . . offers a unique historical lesson in rational decision making and civilian control of the military, and reminds us that the United States never pauses on the path to perfection."--William S. Cohen, former Secretary of Defense
"A definitive case study of the most important and successful American defense legislation of the twentieth century. Victory on the Potomac is probably the best informed book we are ever going to get on this critical chapter in the history of U.S. military policy. As such, it is must reading for military professionals and civilian defense policy experts alike."--Air and Space Power Journal
". . . a tale of the careful preparation and tenacity required to overturn an entrenched bureaucratic position . . . lays out the manner in which a handful of senior officers, vigorously supported by farsighted members of Congress, managed to overcome bitter institutional resistance to pass the Goldwater-Nichols Act--which embodied a veritable organizational revelation."--James R. Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense
". . . provides a superb insight into how the system works in the marble, stone, and cement battlefields of Washington. For anyone interested in Congress, the Department of Defense, or the White House, this book provides a unique view into details not revealed in textbooks or biographies."--Proceedings
Customer Reviews:
Required reading, but with a big caveat.......2006-03-18
My rating is in the middle because the book should be required reading for anyone who wants to know how Goldwater-Nichols came about, however, at the same time, it is extremely biased in its delivery, analysis and conclusions. The author was appointed by Senators Nunn (D) and Goldwater (R) to be the senior reorganization staffer who, "led the team that helped congress 'get smart' on this complex but critically important subject." Because of Locher's involvement from the Act's beginning through to its approval, which gives him unique insight, he has a vested interest in presenting his justifications for the Act in a positive light. This is best seen in his portrayals of the principals involved; those who supported reform are heroes who were not afraid to stand up to the establishment and the institutionalized bureaucracy. Those who opposed Goldwater-Nichols were more interested in their own power and often presented emotional rather than factual or issues based arguments.
Unfortunately, the book was published in 2002, which means the work was done before the US invasion of Iraq in 2003; it would be interesting to see his analysis of the relationship between the SECDEF and the JCS now.
Bottom line: if you're interested in how Goldwater-Nichols evolved, buy the book; I did, and I have no regrets. But read it with a (big) grain of salt.
Gripping and Insightful, "Victory" for Studying Policymaking.......2003-01-13
This is quite easily one of the best books I've ever read on the creation of public policy. Locher paints a full and colorful picture of the military reform efforts culminating in the Goldwater-Nichols Act. I never realized what a role the Beirut/Lebanon operations played in creating an atmosphere in which military reform began to be viewed as necessary, and I found both the strategy and actions used to push the legislation through the Senate Armed Services Committee in 1985-86 particularly fascinating. With regards to balancing personal insights and meticulous research, in my opinion "Victory on the Potomac" is unequalled, and I consider it one of the top prizes in my personal library. If your interests include public policy, successful reform attempts or the organization of the U.S. military, you will find this book to be an entertaining and informative treasure.
Powerful study of Congress and the Pentagon.......2002-08-03
Jim Locher tells the fascinating story of how Congress forced the Pentagon to undergo major reform in the mid-1980s. Locher, who was a major participant in the process, tells the inside story of the Goldwater-Nichols reforms and really takes the gloves off. Locher is a careful researcher and skillful writer who demonstrates vividly the courage of Senators Barry Goldwater and Sam Nunn, Congressman Bill Nichols, Admiral Bill Crowe and others. Locher highlights both the brilliance and the manipulative skills of Secretary of the Navy John Lehman in the debates and interactions between the Congress and the Pentagon. . My only criticism is that Locher is a bit too critical of Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger who did so much to build up the military during the early 1980s. Must reading for all who will work with or within the Pentagon or the Congress in the years ahead

Book Description
When his picture appeared on the cover of
Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character in the movie
Extreme Prejudice on him. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in
The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coina working Texas Ranger. Legend says that one Ranger is all it takes to put down lawlessness and restore the peaceone riot, one Ranger. In this adventure-filled memoir, Joaquin Jackson recalls what it was like to be the Ranger who responded when riots threatened, violence erupted, and criminals needed to be brought to justice across a wide swath of the Texas-Mexico border from 1966 to 1993.
Jackson has dramatic stories to tell. Defying all stereotypes, he was the one Ranger who ensured a fair electionand an overwhelming win for La Raza Unida party candidatesin Zavala County in 1972. He followed legendary Ranger Captain Alfred Y. Allee Sr. into a shootout at the Carrizo Springs jail that ended a prison revoltand left him with nightmares. He captured "The See More Kid," an elusive horse thief and burglar who left clean dishes and swept floors in the houses he robbed. He investigated the 1988 shootings in Big Bend's Colorado Canyon and tried to understand the motives of the Mexican teenagers who terrorized three river rafters and killed one. He even helped train Afghan mujahedin warriors to fight the Soviet Union.
Jackson's tenure in the Texas Rangers began when older Rangers still believed that law need not get in the way of maintaining order, and concluded as younger Rangers were turning to computer technology to help solve crimes. Though he insists, "I am only one Ranger. There was only one story that belonged to me," his story is part of the larger story of the Texas Rangers becoming a modern law enforcement agency that serves all the people of the state. It's a story that's as interesting as any of the legends. And yet, Jackson's story confirms the legends, too. With just over a hundred Texas Rangers to cover a state with 267,399 square miles, any one may become the one Ranger who, like Joaquin Jackson in Zavala County in 1972, stops one riot.

Bought a second one as a gift.......2007-10-16
I'll keep this short. The book is awesome.... Joaquin Jackson is John Wayne with a real badge.
Powerful autobiography.......2007-09-16
"One Ranger" by H. Joaquin Jackson is a suprisingly well-written and powerful tale of one man's journey through the turbulent times in law enforcement that marked the sixties, seventies, and into the eighties. Jackson is a throwback to a simpler time who nevertheless fully understands the momentous transition of society that is taking place around him, and he captures the triumphs, tragedies, and hair-raising incidents that marked his career in the Texas Rangers. A very enjoyable read.
One Ranger is one OUTSTANDING book........2007-09-03
People who say that there are no more heroes have not been introduced to Texas Ranger H. Joaquin Jackson. One Ranger: A Memoir, will allow you to get to know Ranger Jackson through the smiles and tears. When you finish this wonderful book, you will wish it was longer, but be of good cheer, One Ranger Returns will soon be available.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to be reminded that in this cynical world, great men still walk among us.
A truly great read!.......2007-07-14
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The subject matter was close to my heart to begin with, but the ease of reading about Joaquin and what was dear to his heart made the whole experience a treasure I didn't want to end! Mr. Jackson is a fine outstanding human being and has done credit to the badge he wore.
Get to know a Texas Ranger!.......2007-07-09
If you love Texas History and the Rangers, you will not want this book to end. I felt like I was sitting on the front porch, listening to this man tell me his story personally. I laughed with him, cried with him, and experienced his years of keeping Texans safe.
This book may not be a literary work of art but it is very special and gives great insight into the life of a modern day Ranger. Joaquin told his story and held nothing back, for good or bad, and his honesty was refreshing.
