Book Description
Kingdon explores how the American polity is different from that of other countries - particularly other Western democracies - examining just how this uniqueness came about. It invites both introductory and advanced students to appreciate the roots and limits of American exceptionalism, and to recognize the profound importance of current debates over the government's role in our everyday lives.

Poorly Written.......2006-09-27
While the subject matter of this book is intriguing, it is poorly written. Kingdon continues to make the same points over and over and over and over. His sentence phrasing and choice of diction lull you to sleep. This man could have benefitted from taking an intro level English course, or an editor who cared. Once I got through the book, though, I did take his thoughts into consideration. But he could have condensed his thoughts into a few pages.
a good required reading.......2002-01-04
I actually had to read America the Unusual for my intro to american goverment class and I actually enjoyed the book a great deal because it dealt with issues that need to be looked to understand why our goverment the why it is and how our goverment is different from that of Western Europe even though many american came from those countries and some of the same thinkers influenced both American and Western European goverments.
Good facts, but opinions open to debate........1999-04-22
I disagreed with many of the authors opinions in this book, but I will give him credit. He does at least give a fleeting glance at his opponents and dissenters.
As far as I can tell with my limited knowledge, his facts are accurate. While I do not agree with many of his points, I did find the book well laid out organizationally.
He was very clear in his stating of facts and his opinions. He also separated the two very well. He clearly noted when he was stating facts and when he was stating an opinion. I did notice one rather unsubstantiated generalization in the party unity portion of his argument, but I found very few examples of strongly biased generalizations.
The author seems to suggest a rather unrealistic goal of a compromise between the European system of democracy and the American government style. This idea would require too many changes in a society that generally resists change. This a strong book factually, though some of the opinions are open to debate.
I do like his idea of setting out exactly why America is so unusual. This would be a good book for students to read to gain a bit of knowledge of America as compared to European and other industrialized nations. Though I personally did not care for the book because of the opinions expressed, I do believe that it was worthwhile to read if only to pick up the idiosyncracies of the American style of government.
Peace, Mike

GREAT TRIVIA BOOK.......2007-03-10
I GAVE IT AS A GIFT. I HEARD IT'S A GREAT BOOK FOR TRIVIA QUESTIONS! IT WAS ENJOYED BY THE PERSON WHO RECEIVED IT.
Great Trivia.......2004-12-25
The subject of the American Civil War always encompasses an enormous amount of material, as does this great trivia book. For its relatively low price, you get a book containing a great deal of information to any student of the war, and the questions will often stump even the most well read historians.
Great way to learn more about the Civil War.......2004-10-15
I brought this book with me on my family's last vacation because there were hours of driving to do & I'm a Civil War fanatic! Although I've studied the Civil War for over 14 years I learned a lot from this book. And it kept me & my family entertained for hours! It has sections on Union & Confederate generals, battles, civilians, statistics (like anyone could ever know all those!), weapons (my favorite section!), & great chapters on the war in the east, west, south, & at sea. This is a trivia book that's perfect for both the novice & the historian, and it's also low-priced.
The Civil War rulz.......2000-11-02
Man, I can't imagine a better war than the Civil War. And this is one of the best books on that war. This book is for all those guys who dress up on the weekend and pretend to be real soliders. These kind of guys are the best kind of guys in the world, buffs. These buffs should try playing with real ammo and real war time conditions. As a vietnam vet, I know first hand war is really hell. I have to live with this hell the rest of my life. These buffs should try a real war on for size. Peace out!
Another Fair Priced Civil War Winner by Webb Garrison!.......1999-04-04
"2000 Questions and Answers About The Civil War" is the revised title of Webb Garrison's paperback "Civil War Trivia and Fact" book. Whereas the paperback was more expensive, "2000 Questions" is now rebound in a plain yet attractive hardbound format with the extremely nice price of $7.99. And the book itself is readily accesible to any Civil War student or buff from High School age to Senior Citizen. The questions range from the common to the unusual. For example: "Where did the September 1864 siege of Fort Gibson take place?" Answer. "Indian Territory". Or. . . "What millionaire soldier-of-fortune who was killed at Chantilly had a tow in New Jersey and two decorations, a medal and a cross named after him?" Answer: "Maj. Gen. Philip Kearney (b. New York)". . .or "When the Civil War Began, what future general tried to answer the call for volunteers but was rejected?" Answer: U.S.Grant. The answers range from brief, one-sentence comments to a paragraph, accompanied throughout the book with excellent line drawings and contemporary photographs. The "latest" in a long line of Webb Garrison Civil War trivia and fact works, "2000 Questions and Answers About the Civil War" should be an indispensible part of any Civil War buff's personal home library alongside Burke Davis' "The Civil War: Strange & Fascinating Facts". These two works actually compliment each other!

My husband read it through in three days and he never reads!.......2007-01-19
I bought this for my husband, who loves to take us to new and interesting places. We actually had been to more than half that were written about in the book, but he loved reading about them and saying " Hey, we've been there!" Great book, glad to see him reading.

Book three in Perry Stone's prophetic series, Unusual Prophecies Being Fulfilled, explores America's prophetic past, present, and future. You will read evidence of how ancient Israel and America are twin nations of prophetic destiny. Explore the Judeo-Christian link of our Founding Fathers, and America's amazing link to the ancient Roman Empire! In this book Perry reveals: How America is the continuation of the ancient Roman Empire, how America is the New Rome - until the next empire of prophecy comes, the seven-fold prophecy predicting a woman's rise to power before Christ's return, how the ghost of Sodom is rising again, how the spirit of Ishmael is impacting America's youth, and the selective judgment on America's coastlines.
Perry also reveals the number one organization in America that is out to destroy Christianity in the public sphere and make America a godless secular state! This is the most important project dealing with America that Perry has ever produced. Every Christian who loves our country should read this book.
Customer Reviews:
I love the weird ones!.......2004-12-28
This book is cool, I've been to two of the museums already and I'm adding the others to my TO DO list, but BE WARNED. This book was published in 1997 and a new edition is out. I wish I had noticed that before I put this one on my wishlist and received it. If you're interested in these crazy museums (and you really should be) get the updated version of this book and enjoy!
Great escape reading.......2003-03-25
This book is a very good resource for those of you who are looking to break from the pressures of everyday life. Although it is unlikely that you will have the occasion to visit more than a handful of these museums, I think that it is still a great book for anyone interested in getting away and seeing what America used to be like before the Internet. Its short reviews of each museum (2-3 pages) make for very entertaining reading and give the reader a tour of the museums' highlights. As the previous reviewer mentioned, some of the museums are now defunct, an unfortunate end brought about by our fast-paced society. Still, just reading about these fascinating places should inspire the readers imagination. Try it out and if you don't go seeking odd museums in your town, perhaps you should ask yourself why. Again, as the previous reviewer stated, this can become an addicting hobby!
Offbeat Museums - better than most!.......2000-04-07
...and I mean that both ways. The book is better than most books I have used to guide my travels, and offbeat museums are better than (on beat?) ones! As a frequent traveller, this book has guided me well to many of the locations. The descriptions are lighthearted but still in-depth. Its just plain fun reading. Everyone who sees it laying around has to pick it up and give it a read. My only complaint is the at least one of these museums is closed down now, and a few of the directions are a bit hazy. (I did however find every place I looked for!) But overall, even if you aren't planning on GOING to all these places, as I do, it's still a great read. (Be warned: Silly Museums are addictive)

Perry expounds on these topics:

Customer Reviews:
A very Interesting Book........2007-05-02
Perry Stone's The Pope, The Eagle, and the Iron Sickle: Unusual Prophecies Being Fulfilled, is very interesting stuff. He has the Anti Christ being Muslim, the False Prophet being a final apostate Pope, combined with Marian Apparitions (which are leading both catholic's and Muslims astray), a merger of Catholicism and Islam and a FALSE Christ (who is either the False Prophet or another entity), along with the image of the beast. He uses Biblical prophecy's, Islamic beliefs and Catholics extra biblical prophecy's to draw his conclusions. He is not being dogmatic, only proposing what may happen. When I think about it, Islam being the end time apostate religion makes sense, that would explain why those who do not take the mark of the best are beheaded.
The Stoner.......2007-03-18
Perry Stone makes you think. That's the idea of searching and studying. I don't agree with him on everything and he probably doesn't me either. However,I found this an excellent book. Thought provoking and intelligent. Well worth the few dollars paid for it.

Most interesting...and fun!.......2005-02-12
As the title suggests, this is a tour of more than 100 bizarre little museums people (and a few corporations) have set up across the USA ( and a couple in Canada). Some include:
-The Museum of Mestruation (started by a single man in his 50s)
-The Tooth Fairy Museum
-The Museum of Questionable Medical Devices
-Spam has a museum
-So does Combat, the bug spray company. They also have a contest in which you can send them dead roaches dressed up in dioramas.
-The Bull Hall of Fame.
Since I am a proud Hoosier, I'm proud to note that Indiana offerings include:
-The Old Jail Museum in Crawfordsville
-The Dan Quayle Center and Museum in Huntington
-Drake's Midwest Phonograph Museum in MArtinsville
-The Bird's Eye View Museum in Wakarusa.
My favorite is "the Museum of Bad Art: in Massachusetts. Search them on google and find their web page. You can see samples by clicking on the different galleries.
Anyway - fun book. Makes you wonder a bit about your fellow man and his collecting habits.
Excellent collection of unique and unusual places.......2000-09-06
The author has put together a superb collection of unusual museums and supplemented the listings with almost all the necessary details. In addition to intriguingly written descriptions of the museums (which make you want to visit pretty much everything listed), address and phone information is included. Most listings for museums in small towns also relate the location to the nearest major city. An appendix provides web site and e-mail address, as well.
The only thing missing (as in most tour guides, alas) is a map that pinpoints where these museums are in relation to where you are (or where you're going). But given the descriptive directions from major cities, and the organization by major geographical region (and then by state), it's not too hard to figure out.
This is one a must-consult volume for anyone taking to the road, or visiting a new area of the country.
