According to most relationship books, the key to a solid marriage is communication, communication, communication. Phooey, says John Gottman, Ph.D., author of the much-lauded Why Marriages Succeed or Fail. There's much more to a solid, "emotionally intelligent" marriage than sharing every feeling and thought, he points out--though most couples therapists ineffectively (and expensively) harp on these concepts.

Gottman, the director of the Gottman Institute, has found through studying hundreds of couples in his "love lab" that it only takes five minutes for him to predict--with 91 percent accuracy--which couples will eventually divorce. He shares the four not-so-obvious signs of a troubled relationship that he looks for, using sometimes amusing passages from his sessions with married couples. (One standout is Rory, the pediatrician who didn't know the name of the family dog because he spent so much time at work.)

Gottman debunks many myths about divorce (primary among them that affairs are at the root of most splits). He also reveals surprising facts about couples who stay together. They do engage in screaming matches. And they certainly don't resolve every problem. "Take Allan and Betty," he writes. "When Allan gets annoyed at Betty, he turns on ESPN. When Betty is upset with him, she heads for the mall. Then they regroup and go on as if nothing's happened. Never in forty-five years of marriage have they sat down to have a 'dialogue' about their relationship." While this may sound like a couple in trouble, Gottman found that they pass the love-lab tests and say honestly that "they are both very satisfied with their relationship and they love each other deeply."

Through a series of in-depth quizzes, checklists, and exercises, similar to the ones he uses in his workshops, Gottman provides the framework for coping with differences and strengthening your marriage. His profiles of troubled couples rescued from the brink of divorce (including that of Rory, the out-of-touch doctor) and those of still-happy couples who reinvigorate their relationships are equally enlightening. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Gu.......2007-10-15

This is a great book! I have read many relationship books and this is clearly the best. It is so easy to read and offers a lot of practical guidance. There are step by step exercises for you and your partner to work on together. Rebuilding and re-aquainting with each other. I found it to be hopeful and reassuring. It has helped me immensely in my relationship. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for help in your relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A must for couples considering marriage/long-term partnership.......2007-09-30

My fiancee and I decided to be proactive and visit a psychologist before we had any relationship issues and before we got married. He recommended Gottman to us, and what a fabulous recommendation it was! Reading "Seven Principles" really illustrated with lucidity what it was about my parents' marriage that has always bothered me (contempt from my mother in their arguments) and gave clear steps on how to avoid this and other relationship killers. It was very reaffirming in that it doesn't tell couples not to fight (because how realistic is that?), but teaches them how to fight and how to agree to disagree. My fiancee is in the process of reading it now, and I'm excited for him to finish so we can talk it over. The last principle, in particular, is really great for people who already have solid relationships...it made me excited to get married!

A really excellent book overall, Gottman's writing style is clear and concise!

5 out of 5 stars A must have in protecting one's marriage!.......2007-09-26

This book is absolutely essential in the treatment of marriage or couple counseling, as well as can be used by anyone interested in strengthening their own marriage/relationships. It is helpful because it is basic, layed out in a very simplistic manner, and is an easy reader. The book offers concrete instructions for couples on how to improve their closeness, connection, and communication. It is also based on scientific studies thereby offering value and effectiveness of the techniques illustrated in the book. I would highly recommend it for struggling couples, those considering divorce, as well as couples with a good relationship seeking a closer bond.

great book that I had initially borrowed from my therapist. Was enlighteneing. Made me recognize a lot about myself and my spouse. I recommend it for newleyweds and other couples as well; I myself have been married for 10 years. It can be used preventitively or as a couselling guide or just to provide some insight into what you may be feeling or going through with a significant other. It made me realize my thoughts and actions were not "crazy" but rather common.

Book Description

Do you love America? Are you proud to call this country your home? Now, what about your kids? You want them to love America as much as you do, but when popular culture tells them it’s cooler to bash this country than to love it, how can you teach them to be proud and loyal citizens?

As mothers themselves, bestselling author Myrna Blyth and former presidential speechwriter Chriss Winston have struggled with the same dilemma. Shocked by the growing patriotism gap, they set out to create a real-world resource all parents can use to teach their kids about the greatness of America’s past, the promise of its future, and the important role each of us plays in this democracy. How to Raise an American shows you how to make patriotism a priority without it becoming a chore for you or your kids.

This practical guide offers tips, games, activities, quizzes, and information you can use to make patriotism part of your family’s daily life, including:

- 60-Minute Solutions that easily and seamlessly instill a love of this country
- Dinner Table Debate topics that will have the whole family talking
- Road trip ideas that bring America’s history to life
- Books and movies that exemplify our shared ideals
- Inspiring stories of American courage, honor, and ingenuity
- Fun and educational ways to celebrate American holidays like the Fourth of July and Veterans Day

Blyth and Winston consulted prominent historians, academics, military leaders, politicians, authors, scholars, film critics and parents around the country to bring you a truly useful guide. Part treatise on patriotism, part American history primer, part civics lesson, this book is the antidote to the virulent America bashing our children hear every day.

Inspiring and practical, How to Raise an American is a must for every patriot—parent and child.

5 out of 5 stars This may be the most important book published in years.......2007-09-30

With a son-in-law still serving in the military after his retirement and a grandson having just graduated from West Point and going to Ranger school, imagine my shock to hear our 15-year-old granddaughter telling her brother that America isn't worth fighting for. I could hear her ancestors (who have fought in every war the USA has faced, beginning with the Revolution and French/Indian Wars) rolling in their collective graves. However, I'm smart enough to know not to argue with her. I have, though, been looking for a way to change her mind.

Then I stumbled on this book at the library. THANK YOU, Ms. Blyth and Ms. Winston. This is exactly what I need. Fortunately I love history, especially American history, and can easily take the projects and ideas in the book and develop them to fit our family.

Furthermore, I am relieved and encouraged to see that others have not only recognized the problem but have studied it and have found solutions to offer. It's always nice to know that one isn't fighting alone.

5 out of 5 stars refreshing.......2007-06-11

I just finished reading this book, and I honestly can say I believe that I had been unknowingly temporarily influenced by the media. While I was reading about critics of the U.S. I realized that I have bought into a lot of the hype and negativity, focusing on a lot of bad and not remembering the tremendous good we do and have done as a country. I found myself getting teary eyed throughout the book with the stories of our founding fathers, immigrants, and military. Thank you for the dose of reality it gave me. I think it is hard to find a balance between looking at things through the media and looking at things through rose colored glasses. I loved the part of the book where the author talked about how the United States of America started as an idea, not by people who wanted more power, or wanted to rule, but by men who believed that all people had the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness", that we were all created equal. And through this idea, they wanted to form a more perfect government.
Amazing....
This book is full of interesting facts like the reason John Hancock's signature was so big is because he wanted to make sure that King George could read it without his spectacles. I love this country, I feel blessed to have been born here and to raise my three children here. I am determined to help them appreciate this great country, and the freedoms we enjoy. My family and I are going to celebrate Flag day this year for the first time, by reading a small book about the flag, learning how to fold it, and learning about the design and history of it.
Thank you very much for this much needed book!

1 out of 5 stars Silly and Politically Motivated.......2007-06-03

First of all, I love this country and what it stands for. But what I dont understand is how conservatives like Myrna Blyth can label anyone who doesn't agree with her as angry and hateful, while picking right up on her hatred and suspicion of the media and liberals. For example this book is "the perfect antidote for all the liberal bile and anti-American bigotry that the left imposes on public schools, universities, Hollywood morons, and of course the news media"? I haven't heard this much hatred since listening to Bill O'Reilly.

Unfortunately this book is just plain silly and is filled with inaccuracies and politically-motivated content. If you want your kids to learn about this country, take them to a museum or to Washington DC or Philadelphia.

1 out of 5 stars Gresham's law for intellect........2007-05-27

Think tanks most often provide "commissioned" sources for policy makers and ideologues or "hired guns" like attorneys for the rich. Like the Gresham's Law describing how bad adulterated currency drives out the good; these sources generally provide adulterated thinking rather than quality dialog and solid logic. They are a source of intellectual decline. Heritage sponsored promotion of this book. One is reminded of flags on lapels of those who undermine the Constitution while rhetorically exaggerating their defense of American freedoms.

Myrna Blyth's book is an example which also suggests that people, reading less, have lost much of their critical capacity while seeing what they believe and wanting confirmation of their bias rather than a rational challenge. The purpose is to create little patriots with heroes and selective history.

Her methods and examples exemplify, despite pretense, brainwashing more than enlightenment. Too strong? Consider the ironies (lost on the author) that idealizing American democracy should require books to write more about the Moon landing (technology) rather than detailing Iran Contra and similar policies. She also writes that more teaching of history and rational discussion are needed - but then dismisses as unworthy of debate the arguments of the "Communist" Howard Zinn. She also seems to ignore that the decline of teaching history is itself part of the educational policy of creating technicians and worker automatons who lack the desire, habit, and capacity to question authority.

Some of the most incredibly stupid statements and policies have been accepted, against all independent logic, from just such "patriotism". As Lincoln noted, most of the people can be fooled most of the time - especially with this kind of "patriotic" education. One might be reminded that Fascism is built on extreme nationalism and the coaltion of government and the military industrial complex (to use Eisenhower's term).

One might also consider that idealization of heroes is like war memorials - designed to forget all but myths and so ignore the errors and crimes of governments. Reagan is responsible for the terrorism of the School of the Americas, Iran-Contra, assassinations and not by any means the sole reason for Soviet decline. Ford was a nice guy but pardoned a scoundrel, supported the Chilean intervention (installing more like Fascism than democracy), and Timor genocide. Ideas have consequences and our leaders have no fear of judgment for their crimes or mistakes. Phony heroes destroy America and false patriotism is cancerous. Concentrate on reality and things we can legitimately be proud of. Flags can make Nazis as easily as free peoples. As Mark Twain said, one can always love one's country while still only sometimes its government.

3 out of 5 stars presumption.......2007-05-21

It seems overly presumptuous to attempt to instill particular beliefs in your childern. The role of a parent is to foster education and knowledge, teach your childern how to think critically for themselves and not rely on others to form their all important beleifs. Attempting to dictate your childs point of view is extremely detrimental to their intellectual development and if American parents are to do this it will inevitably lead to a far weaker nation in the future. The best way to contribute to your child forming a positive point of view of his country is to contribute in making America a better place.

The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second World War, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him -- oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, pitch-perfect novel -- namely, Stevens' own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.

Book Description

A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England. A wonderful, wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars "In bantering lies the key to human warmth.".......2007-09-15

"A 'great' butler can only be, surely, one who can point to his years of service and say that he has applied his talents to serving a great gentleman--and through the latter, in serving humanity" (p. 117).

The Remains of the Day (1989) is the third novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (1954). It won the Booker prize in 1989. The book's title not only refers to the time of day (evening), when the narrator reflects upon his day's work, but also upon his mature age, from which he can reflect upon his life. The title also refers to the last grand houses of Great Britain's staffed with butlers such as Ishiguro's narrator, Stevens.

Stevens is a loyal English butler who has who dedicated his life to the service of Lord Darlington. Upon receiving a letter from an ex co-worker Miss Kenton describing her unhappy married life, and at the encouragement of his new employer, Mr. Farraday, an American, Stevens borrows a car to take a "motoring trip" to revisit Miss Kenton. Along the way (in a plot structure reminiscent of Bergman's Wild Strawberries - Criterion Collection) Stevens reflects upon his service to Lord Darlington, the meaning of "dignity," his relationship with his father, and his true feelings for Miss Kenton, whom he cherishes. It was because of his service to Lord Darlington that Stevens never acted upon his love for Miss Kenton. Although she offered him her love, he refused to even acknowledge her feelings by allowing himself to be "off duty" in her presence (p. 169). Rather, all his life Stevens has been consumed by the desire to be a "great" butler, which for him has meant embodying the ideals of service, dignity, and composure. Ultimately, The Remains of The Day is a poignant meditation upon missed opportunities and lost love; one cannot "turn back the clock," as Stevens puts it (p. 239). Ishiguro succeeds at drawing the reader into Stevens' loss as a result of placing duty above the needs of his heart. This is a perfect novel, one that I highly recommend, along with the 1993 Merchant-Ivory must-see film The Remains of the Day (Special Edition) starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.

One of my 10 favorite novels of the last 25 years.

5 out of 5 stars A Devoted Professional.......2007-09-15

Brilliant novel about a butler so dedicated to perfection that he suppresses all human emotion in the quest for professional "dignity" and service to a great man. Feelings of love, grief, guilt & shame are banished in a life of service, and Stevens is ever searching for a way to improve, even in (what should be) casual "banterings" with a new American employer. However, traces of the butler's humanity emerge as he travels the countryside in hopes of having a former maid return to Darlington Hall. The true character of his former employer, the words of a letter from Miss Kenton, and his own past behavior are under scrutiny during his travels. I loved the subtlety & elegant melancholy of this novel. Thoroughly enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Ishiguro.......2007-09-03

In a world full of "good" books, Remains of the Day stands out as a truly amazing one. It speaks to Kazuo Ishiguro's talent that such a simple plot about a reserved English butler could be so engrossing and heartbreaking. The end of the book is especially powerful, and likely to leave any reader thinking about it long after they've finished. This is easily the best work of Ishiguro and, in my opinion, one of the best modern novels out there. Not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-20

Ishiguro is an amazing writer and this novel is no exception. This work is presented first through memories and recollections during a road trip and later via an interaction at the end of the trip and reflections on that interaction. Ishiguro presents a question, which I will not ruin here, that everyone should ask themselves. Before you ask the question he presents you must read this book immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Stevens is among the finest creations in English literature.......2007-07-11

The story of The Remains of the Day unfolds in a strange but effective way. The narrator is Mr. Stevens, the key character in the novel, and it is his voice that tells the increasingly revealing tale of his life as a 'gentleman's gentleman'.

However, Ishiguro does not simply allow Stevens to give us a memoir of his life from the perspective of advanced years. Instead Stevens records his motoring trip across England as if he is keeping an hourly diary, perhaps spoken into a dictaphone (if such technology had existed in the mid-1950s when the main story is set). This device allows us to experience each stage of the journey as it happens and, more importantly, Steven's growing self-awareness as he tries to piece together the significance of events from his past life.

The writing style reflects the period and the character of Stevens beautifully. As narrator, he seems unable or unwilling to acknowledge the emotions that always threaten to unseat the 'dignity' to which he aspires. In his conversations with Miss Kenton, he uses language to preserve decorum at all costs. Passion is his enemy and he fights a lifelong battle against it.

In Mr. Stevens, Ishiguro has given us one of the greatest creations in all of English literature. It is a wonderful accomplishment and the author fully deserves every plaudit and honour he has received for this masterpiece.

This book is a great family read. It covers three generations on a family farm. This illustrations are awesome. Patricia MacLachlan has written a great book for young children along similar lines as her Sarah, Plain and Tall series. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely In the Top 5 of All Children's Books.......2006-08-24

Almost everyone else has said it already--this is as good a book as you can read to your kids. Not, contrary to what an isolated review suggested, stilted at all. Just beautifully evocative of a family living complete and joyful lives, with their ties to the land still unbroken.

5 out of 5 stars Touching, beautiful, full of love.......2006-06-05

I love this book! I bought this book for my son (then 3) when I was expecting my daughter. Admittedly, this is MY favorite book. My son would much rather read something silly than poignant. But this book is GORGEOUS! The illustrations are achingly beautiful. The love in this multigenerational family leaps off the page. There is a home birth, love of the land/ nature/ farming, and sibling love. The boy in the story is taught by his mother, father, grandfather and grandmother about "all the places to love." The story closes with him teaching these things to his new sister. Every once in a while, my son asks me to choose the books I like best for our reading and I always choose this one. Don't get me wrong, he likes it too (he's now 5) he just doesn't usually choose it. You won't regret buying this book!

5 out of 5 stars Passing on the things we love.......2006-04-17

I am not only a Book junkie, I am a grandma who wants to pass on the Passion. I fell in love with this book not only because I grew up in rural Michigan, on a dairy farm, with my grandparents up the road. But because this book captures the love and family bond that I want to pass to my grandchildren. Mike Wimmer did an exceptional job of bringing this lovely story to life. I Dare you to read this out loud to any child you love .. and not shed a tear!

A Captivating Tale Set in the Heart of Amish Country!

After the dramatic conclusion to his discovery of a long-lost postcard, journalist Philip Bradley simply cannot forget the Amish people he met while on assignment in Pennsylvania particularly Rachel Yoder and her young daughter, Annie. Rachel's cheerful outlook, in spite of her blindness, and her appealing, uncomplicated lifestyle beckon Philip amid the high-paced existence of his New York career.

Philip's newfound knowledge of the true reason for Rachel's loss of sight spurs him on to uncover what he can about the possibility for a cure. In Lancaster County, Rachel has her own ideas about the way her vision might be restored, and it doesn't include the local healer and his black box. Now, Rachel firmly believes the God she serves is the only One who can grant her sight, but as the memories of the trauma she suffered begin to resurface, Rachel questions whether she can bear the agonizing road to recovery.

Drawn back to Lancaster County over the Christmas holidays, Philip struggles with the vast gulf separating him from the beautiful Plain woman. Rachel has suffered unbearable heartache; will his growing affection for her only bring more of the same? Or must Philip and Rachel sacrifice a future together for the sake of all they know and love?

    5 out of 5 stars A fitting end indeed.......2005-05-14

This book is the perfect sequel (and conclusion) to the story of Rachel Yoder and Philip Bradley.
It left no end untied, no strings hanging, and basically ended on a very high note.

Rachel's parents aren't much help either. Trying to keep their daughter safe from outsiders they practically shun him.

    Book Description

Written by Denise Jackson, with co-writer Ellen Vaughn, this inspirational book gives the reader an all-access look into one of country music's most famous couples: their love story, struggles, dreams, success, the near-failure of their marriage, and the rediscovery of their faith and how that has dramatically shaped their lives.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great story!.......2007-10-17

Before I read this book, I read the Amazon reviews. I would like to say after reading it, that the person who posted that Denise Jackson is trashing her husband is absolutely wrong! If merely stating that Alan confessed to infidelity is trashing him, the reviewer has a different view of what "trashing" is, than most people. Her husband wrote the forward for the book and by doing so put his stamp of approval on its contents.

Those that gave the book a low score because they think she spent too much time talking about her money and all it would buy are way off too. The whole point is that though she had all the material things she could ever want, she was still empty. As are most people without a spiritual compass.

As a Christian, I did skip alot of the content, but the book has been given to a member of the family who is not a Christian and she has been ministered to by reading it. Her husband cheated and left her years ago.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring story.......2007-10-17

Great book - an inspiring story about a high profile marriage. Denise Jacskon learns to lean on God rather than depend on a famous husband for the success of her marriage and the happiness in her life.

5 out of 5 stars Fame and Fortune! God will answer your prayers too!! .......2007-10-15

Most people will read this book because Denise is the closest person to our beloved Alan Jackson, who in most people's eyes, can never do wrong, even though he did do wrong. We want to know who he is, what happened, and mostly, there's a happy ending. It was the suicide of her brother that made her take her first step to God, then it was the separation.

The book is co-written by an award-winning author. Each sentence is well constructed, chapters are structured well and the reading is interesting! I like the way the end of each chapter lures you to continue to the next. But you won't find the "dirt" here. Don't expect it. It is about her faith. Yes, some chapters seem heavy on the religious aspect, and at times maybe repetitious. And the message is loud and clear; it is her faith in God, or as some might say: her prayers were answered. Bring Alan back home!

Surprisingly, it took 15 chapters and over 140 pages to reveal that the marriage broke because of infidelity. Either Denise chose to not elaborate on the vague issues that lead to breakup, or Alan simply lied to her that "she was the one at fault"! That's it... men rarely blame themselves when cheating.

Each chapter begins with lyrics from other songwriters, Alan's or passages. Interesting sidebars are included on each chapter. Reference to books or Bible passages are included. A two song CD is included. Also, a chapter discusses the Precious Memories-Live at the Ryman DVD and CD. It is wonderful!

Although this family had everything they could possibly ask for, they both admitted that all the material things don't bring happiness. Gee, and here I thought it would!! .....Rizzo

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Read.......2007-10-14

I really loved this book, I could not put it down, I read it in one day... I have recommended it to my daughters to read...

    5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2007-10-14

As a mom of 4 young children, I don't usually read books that aren't about cartoon characters or cats wearing hats. However my sister in law started telling me about how she was reading this wonderful book. She talked non stop about it. So when she was finished, I asked to borrow it.

I picked the book up every chance I had and I finally finished today. I was extremely touched by Denise's story. I've been to several of Alan's concerts but knew nothing about her. It was so nice to hear about celebrities havng "normal" lives with ups and downs.

I was also pleased to hear how in love she is with the Lord and how that changed her life. It definately made me think A LOT about my own spirituality.

John Carter Cash has written a loving memory of his mother, June Carter Cash. He tells how his mother, in particular, dealt the good times and the bad times shared by his parents. I enjoyed it, the book was hard to put down.

    3 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-09-18

This is a good book giving one an insight into a person who uses her faith to triumph over personal pain. However I believe June Carter Cash's addictions should have remained a private matter. Dealing with an addictive personality in one's life can sometimes lead a person to resort to addictive medicines to cope. June Carter Cash is an inspirational person in the way she had the faith and strength to keep going in the face of much adversity.

5 out of 5 stars Who could not love June Carter? .......2007-09-09

I have read just about every book i can get my hands on about John and June Carter - What fascinates me about them the most is how such a destructive man became such a wonderful Christian , became clean and overcame such addiction and alcohol problems! Not only did God intervene but this woman June Carter whom he loved forever was the saint sent to him from God and so was the Carter family ! - I truly believe this - Their son has written a beautiful book about his mother and even told some things about her which i did not know but they do not change my opinion of her in the least - I just wish i had seen one of their shows in my life time - I watch Walk the Line which i own every chance i get - Thank goodness the son made this movie happen! It is beautiful both the bad parts and good and the music is terrific. June and John were lucky to have chosen such great actors to play their roles in such an honest manner - They should be very proud. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in this amazing family!

    5 out of 5 stars Truth,Tears and Laughter .......2007-09-05

This book was one of the history of The famous Carter Family singers, and one of tears and laughter.John Carter Cash's book about his mother is one of the most honest stories I have read about this family, ever. The human side that John reveals,in his mother's,father's,and his own life,is sometimes shocking and overwhelming at times, but, neccessary,to tell the complete story of his heritage and legacy. You will admire the family, even more than you do now, because John, with his heart-touching words, exposes them with love and compassion, for all the world to see.The story of both his parents' deaths are particularly poignanat, because they were our "family" too.

My husband and I both enjoyed the book greatly. I would certainly recommend it as a good read. Very touching and informative also.

    Book Description

Homosexuality is a taboo subject in Arab countries. Clerics denounce it as a heinous sin, while newspapers write cryptically of "shameful acts." Although many parts of the world now accept sexual diversity, the Middle East is moving in the opposite direction. In this absorbing account, journalist Brian Whitaker calls attention to the voices of men and women who are struggling with gay identities in societies where they are marginalized and persecuted by the authorities. He paints a disturbing picture of people who live secretive, fearful lives and who are often jailed, beaten, and ostracized by their families, or sent to be "cured" by psychiatrists.
Whitaker's exploration of changing sexual behavior in the Arab world reveals that--while deeply repressive prejudices and stereotypes still govern much thinking about homosexuality--there are pockets of change and tolerance. The author combines personal accounts from individuals in the region with a look at recent Arab films and novels featuring gay characters and conducts a sensitive comparative reading of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic strictures around sexuality. Deeply informed and engagingly written, Unspeakable Love draws long overdue attention to a crucial subject.

5 out of 5 stars speakable literature... .......2007-09-21

brian whitaker tackled a subject that is very touchy-- how the gay and lesbian arabs live in their countries. in a straightforward, journalistic kind of a way, he relates the lives of queer arabs who are encountering old traditions and the power of family honor. in lebanon, egypt and saudi arabia, whitaker documents the challenges of everday gay and lesbian arabs face in encoutering their own identity. it is an eye opening experience about a group of people in a very complicated part of the world. and whitaker does it in a way that neither offends arabs nor spits in their face. a well balanced act, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Equality Struggle in the Middle East.......2007-08-01

This book is must reading for those like me who want a world free of sexual orientation oppression. Gays in the Middle East today have a much tougher life than gays in the USA. The family pressures for them to be straight or else are intense. For example, in some instances forced electric shock treatments are being used by families to attempt to obtain a "cure". But now a growing number of middle eastern brothers and sisters are uniting to support and accept each other. The rest of the world needs to support them in their struggle for equality. The book is somewhat optimistic about the eventual outcome of their struggle.

The author references a website www.al-bab.com that is a good source for additional information and links to other sites.

    4 out of 5 stars Helem.......2007-05-04

Brian Whitaker's 'Unspeakable Love' is a great summary of the life of current trends and treatment of homosexuality within contemporary Arab culture. This book should not be read expecting a history of homosexuality within this culture as this is not its intent. The book provides a detailed portayal, especially, of a paradigm shift from the 90's to current day. There are some issues with the book being a bit choppy in its presentation but that does not interefere with the information. Whitaker also provides detailed notation of where to obtain additional resources via the web. In addition, many wonderful Arabic texts are discussed in this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Arab Love.......2007-01-13

Whitaker, Brian, "Unspeakable Love: Gay and Lesbian Life in the Middle East." University of California Press, 2006.

    Arab Love

"Unspeakable Love: Gay and Lesbian Lover in the Middle East is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. I suppose one of the reasons I found it so fascinating is because I spent so many years of my life in that section of the world. Brian Whitaker has dome an admirable job in collecting research for this book which reads quickly and says much.
At this time in the mind of America, the Arabs have gained a new minority status, especially because of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The Arab world has always been one of mystery to the Western man. Information on homosexuality there has always been shrouded from us Whitaker opens the door on that part of the world and lets us look inside of those countries that consider being gay a major crime, not just against humanity but against the Moslem religion It has always been a taboo subject in Arab countries. The press, when it does write about it, calls homosexuality "shameless and Moslems say it is "heinous". In a world where diversity has finally begun to come into its own, the Arab countries are moving the other way.
What gave Whitaker the "inspiration" to write "Unspeakable Love" was the now famous incident in 2001 when Egyptian police raided a boat on the Nile River and arrested many men. Both the arrest and the ensuing trials caused many lives to be ruined and attracted worldwide attention. Shortly afterwards, Whitaker met two of the men who had been closely involved in the case and what began as a feature article grew into this wonderful book. The incidents of the boat raid and arrests and imprisonments raised the issue of homosexuality in the entire Arab world. Quite naturally it would have been impossible to cover all of the twenty-two countries of the Arab League so Whitaker has concentrated on the issues that are common to all of the countries. The basic problem is that the Arab nations do not even acknowledge that homosexuality even exists today. In the past, homosexuality was by and large ignored or people looked the other way but this is still intolerance. If a person's sexuality departs what is considered the "norm", he can have no legal rights and is forced to live a secret life, constantly afraid of discovery and blackmail. The fact that sexual issues in the Arab world become a part of international politics makes the situation even more difficult and is regarded as a barrier to social progress. Because sexuality is not regarded rationally except as a means for procreation, reform and open discussion are impossible. Worst of all is that there is pessimism among the Arab gay men and women that there is any change in the offing. It is a dismal conclusion but unfortunately this is what the author was able to surmise from the research that he did.
Whitaker seems to express some hope that things will change however. It also appears that tradition and family honor are the major issues that stand in the way of acceptance of gays in the Arab world. I must Say that the book held me captive as I turned the pages. I have known "gay" Arabs--basically Palestinians--and I have heard their stories. Again, I was amazed at how brutal man can be because of what he does not understand. Whitaker's details are both accurate and highly disturbing but his book does give us a good deal of insight into the nature of social pressure as well as the sense of being alone that Arab homosexuals feel. If you are interested in reform, this is an ideal book to read. The Arab nations that wish to move forward into the modern world must realize that the enslavement of any singular group is inhumane and modernity can only come with enlightenment. Anxiety, fear and trauma are what should be the taboos, not men loving men and women loving women.

3 out of 5 stars Modern Gay and Lesbian Arabs.......2006-11-04

Arab is supposed to be an extremely difficult language to learn. It's incredibly difficult for writers to generalize about the Arab world when it encompasses so many countries and so much history, and historical change. Finally, in homophobic societies, it is hard to get people to speak about sexuality generally and homosexuality specifically. For all these reasons, I thank the author for producing this text and give him much credit.

However, this book may frustrate some. I think the author was trying to write for everyday readers and the academic, highly-versed. His journalism background shows in the chattiness of some chapters, but when he speaks of fields of Islamic law and constructionism versus essentialism in gay studies debates, it may get too complicated for some readers.

The best chapters were the ones in which he quotes actual Arab gay men and lesbians (and yes, the book does try to be lesbian-inclusive) and details homophobic controversies in that region. A large chunk of the book is about describing and critiquing homophobia from Muslim clerics and leaders. Given how religion is used to promote homophobia in many places, this addition was necessary, but it got dull after awhile. In the United States, religious homophobes play a key role in the battle of gay rights, but if someone wrote a book that focused more on Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson than on the Stonewall Riots, Ruby Mae Brown, or Rock Hudson, then it would be a rocky, unbalanced read.

Given the intense tensions between the Christian and Muslim worlds, I loved how this writer tried to keep Western readers humble. He says Arab countries have homophobic laws, but so did Britain less than 40 years ago. Mosques may be gay-unfriendly, but he writes that most churches and synagogues are too, except for a few, new, progressive institutions. Modern Arab literature may be homophobic, but much of English and American literature is the same way. Again, I applaud the author's promotion of keeping one's own community in check or humble.

I wasn't glued to this book, but I found it insightful and important. Readers may benefit from reading this alongside seeing the documentary "Living Dangerously."

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic biography of a true ledgend.......2007-01-11

I am a legally blind man and and I usually get my books to listen to through the library, but after I saw the movie walk the line I felt I had to know more about the ledgend of Cash through an audiobook if I could find one. I was lucky to find this one. I love the way Kris Kristofferson reads the book. Since he was a friend of cash's, he put feeling into the reading like no other person can. Through the author's extensive research on Cash, I found out things I never knew about him. The Movie is good, but if you really want to know who Cash is, just by this and Listen to Kristofferson tell you about his friend. The man in black.

5 out of 5 stars piety and weakness.......2006-08-25

I learned a lot about Johnny Cash, as well as people like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and many others who were the ones that generated so much buzz about music in the 1950's. Toward the end of the book, I was sad because I knew that it would speak of his death. I found myself not wanting to hear about it, because I had loved learning about his life so much.

My favorite story in the whole book was about a prayer he prayed at dinner. His dinner guest recalled the story:

Cash prayed and said, "... and we thank you Lord for this food, and we ask that you would bless it to our body. We pray these things in Jesus' name, Amen. When he finished praying he winked at me and said, "I still miss the drugs though."

It is precisely that juxtaposition of piety and weakness that I think I love about him. It reminds me of another man who is known well for his writing when he said:

I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

In case you didn't catch that, the other man to whom I referred is the Apostle Paul. He happened to be one of Cash's favorite people for obvious reasons. I have wondered why I am so enamored by people like Johnny Cash and Paul; these men of such conviction, but at the same time so open about their transgressions. I think it is because they knew themselves well, and they never allowed the good in them to elevate them to a place where they could look down at others. They knew the darkness, and that it was always waiting if they would just relent and turn to it.

Cash turned to it a lot. However, like Paul, he also said:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

At the end of his life, after June Carter died he hung around for a few months more. He could barely walk, was in massive pain, and was eighty percent blind. In this state, however, he still had the Bible enlarged big enough so he could read it. Others spoke about his love of Jesus, his kindness, his generosity, and his faithfulness to June.

So many want to be cynical about people who struggle, fall, get up, and fall again. They like to point and yell to expose someone else's flaws. I am more convinced that the ones who yell the loudest are the ones who are the most scared of having their flaws exposed.

One of my favorite lines in music comes from a song sung by Cash. It was written by Bono and performed with U2 (yeah, I know big surprise). The line goes:

    I went out there,
    In search of experience,
    To taste and to touch,
    And to feel as much,
    As a man can,
    Before he repents.

Isn't that all of our stories? I know it's mine. I also know that it is mine everyday. I walk around, and like a little kid test the boundaries of God's love. Some days, I may not go far, other days I may feel restless and I just want to run. Yet each time I return home to talk with God I find myself speaking the words of Paul:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

    5 out of 5 stars Hello, I'm A Johnny Cash Book!.......2006-06-10

I usually don't read many biographies, but I received this one for Christmas one year since I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was glad to see that this book was very well written and also a very easy read. I knew it was going to be good when the first chapter was pretty emotional, as it starts off with June Carter Cash dying. The book also focuses well on some key moments in Johnny Cash's life that made the most significant difference - the first being the death of his brother, Jack, and the others that revolved around June. Like other reviewers have stated, Walk The Line used a lot of moments from the book and I would recommend reading the book as well as watching the movie. I think what was great about Johnny Cash, and what we can all relate too, is how open he was with how he was a sinner and how he had made a lot of mistakes (ie. drugs, affairs, etc.), but he changed his ways when he fully committed himself to Jesus and his faith. I think this book can be a great tool to those who have struggled and have difficult pasts because Cash showed that it doesn't matter what you have done, that you have forgiveness and that you can always start over. Great message and this book has a lot of interesting and funny stories that will want to make you laugh, smile, shake your head, or make you feel sad. Steve Turner has done a great job and had made me rethink biographies. If you're a Johnny Cash fan, this a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Informative and In-Depth! A Good Biography to Start Learning About the Life of Johnny Cash........2006-05-10

Before I read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, by Steve Turner, from 2004, I had also read the 1997 book called CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY (with Patrick Carr). They both cover similar ground. The 1997 book seems more homey, like Johnny Cash is talking to you, but this book, by Steve Turner, seems more accurate.

Having know Johnny and his family for over a decade, author Steve Turner was actually hired to help write another autobiography, but June and Johnny died unexpectedly, and the book turned into an in-depth research research project, instead of just helping Johnny write with decent grammar, or whatever it takes two authors to do with an AUTObiography.

Both books seem to be equally long in content, though the page counts and page sizes differ between the hardcover of this book and the small paperback of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY book that I read.

Though both books cover a lot of the same incidents from Johnny's life, this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, features some highly interesting coverage of the last living days of June and Johnny, before they both passed on in 2003. There is also plenty of more in-depth coverage of events told in THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and there are also plenty of events from Johnny's life that are not mentioned in the 1997 autobiography. I recommend that you read both books, actually.

The author also points out that since he had to do research, instead of just typing out whatever Johnny told him, he has discovered that Johnny Cash never had trouble telling a good story, or making a good story even better! For example, Johnny Cash has written and talked about how rowdy he was in the Air Force, fighting with the military police, etc., but Steve Turner points out that the people who were in the Air Force with him don't remember any of that kind of rowdiness from Johnny, who never got into much trouble, and would have been widely known on the air base if he HAD fought with the guards, etc. This book also tells about how Johnny would play music with other airmen in his dorm, and Johnny was the worst of the bunch, learning a lot from the others!

There are many interesting b/w photos, although mostly small, but in high quantity! There is a photo of his brother Jack, whose childhood death affected Johnny for the rest of his life.

This book also has a chronology of major events in Johnny's life, and a discography of his primary releases, which is good to use as a shopping list, for me.

This book does have some distracting typos that I hope get fixed in future printings. On one page the same sentence appears twice in a row. In the Chronology, the death of his father, Ray Cash, appears twice on the list, in 1985 (correct), and then again in 1993 (incorrect). This is unfortunate, but these two are the worst distractions that I found without even trying.

It is also interesting to see how the movie WALK THE LINE compares to what is contained in both of these books! For instance, both books say that June Carter never really met or toured with Johnny until he was a big, established star, years into his music career, while the movie gives me the impression that they met on Johnny's first fledgling tour.

THE MAN CALLED CASH gives information about the the saw accident and his brother Jack. This book says that actually there was another 12 year old boy there, who witnessed the event, and Johnny suspected him of being involved in a bad way, though none of the adults thought so at the time, or ever! Both books mention how Johnny would see Jack appear in his dreams for the rest of his life, always a few years older than Johnny at whatever the age Johnny dreamed the appearance.

This book talks about Johnny's friendship with the evangelist, Billy Graham. I personally enjoy Johnny's Gospel albums and projects, but I am a little bit disappointed over the wasted years of drug abuse and family neglect from Johnny, who thought of himself often as a lost Christian, but a Christian none the less. What do you think about that?

The Bible says, "What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." -- Philippians 1:18. Using this Bible verse as a model, it tells me that Johnny Cash's Gospel works, as good as they are, are also totally legitimate as long as they correctly preach the Word of God--regardless of the depths of sin and abuse that Johnny heaped upon himself and his loved ones.

As long as Jesus Christ is being preached correctly, the sins of the messenger do not negate the message itself (and we are all sinners, just not as extreme as Johnny was, I suspect)! I do not and cannot condone his sinful abuses, (though I have done most of them myself, before I got Saved 8 years ago), but I will let God judge his own servant, and I will continue to enjoy the many beautiful Gospel projects which Johnny Cash was always eager and happy to work on!

GOSPEL GLORY is my favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD, so far. His movie, THE GOSPEL ROAD, is on DVD and is also really cool! My favorite Gospel project from Johnny Cash is his spoken word reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT on 16 CDs, very affordably priced from amazon.com, and all three of these items come highly recommended by me!

I can recommend both of these books for anybody who enjoyed the WALK THE LINE film.

Bottom line: read CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY for a fun time spent with Johnny Cash in his own words, then read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, for the REAL story on how many of those stories actually went down!
