Product Description

In 1957, a few experimental European groups came together to form the Situationist International. The name came from their aim of liberating everyday life through the creation of open-ended, participatory "situations" (as opposed to fixed works of art). Over the next decade the situationists developed a critique of the global "spectacle-commodity system," and their new methods of agitation helped trigger the May 1968 revolt in France. Although the SI was dissolved in 1972, situationist theories and tactics have continued to inspire radical currents in dozens of countries all over the world. This is the most comprehensive collection of situationist writings in English, greatly revised and expanded, with over 100 pages of new material.

4 out of 5 stars Good selection, but not necessary.......2005-09-26

Knabb's anthology of some of the most important texts of the Situationist International presents a good range of the SI texts available in English. While the anthology does contain such important works as the theory of the derive and on the poverty of student life, all these and more works are available for free online. I would personally suggest not picking this up and going with the online texts unless you need something to hold in your hands (as in my case). Good, but unnecessary today with the incredible resources available online.

If you're interested in the Situationist International & you don't speak/read French, you need this book! It's the absolute STANDARD-SETTING WORK for English translations of Situationist (and some Letterist International) texts. Absolutely essential.

    Book Description

In Ecology without Nature, Timothy Morton argues that the chief stumbling block to environmental thinking is the image of nature itself. Ecological writers propose a new worldview, but their very zeal to preserve the natural world leads them away from the "nature" they revere. The problem is a symptom of the ecological catastrophe in which we are living. Morton sets out a seeming paradox: to have a properly ecological view, we must relinquish the idea of nature once and for all.

Ecology without Nature investigates our ecological assumptions in a way that is provocative and deeply engaging. Ranging widely in eighteenth-century through contemporary philosophy, culture, and history, he explores the value of art in imagining environmental projects for the future. Morton develops a fresh vocabulary for reading "environmentality" in artistic form as well as content, and traces the contexts of ecological constructs through the history of capitalism. From John Clare to John Cage, from Kierkegaard to Kristeva, from The Lord of the Rings to electronic life forms, Ecology without Nature widens our view of ecological criticism, and deepens our understanding of ecology itself. Instead of trying to use an idea of nature to heal what society has damaged, Morton sets out a radical new form of ecological criticism: "dark ecology."

      Book Description

Although Chinese Marxism—primarily represented by Maoism—is generally seen by Western intellectuals as monolithic, Liu Kang argues that its practices and projects are as diverse as those in Western Marxism, particularly in the area of aesthetics. In this comparative study of European and Chinese Marxist traditions, Liu reveals the extent to which Chinese Marxists incorporate ideas about aesthetics and culture in their theories and practices. In doing so, he constructs a wholly new understanding of Chinese Marxism.
Far from being secondary considerations in Chinese Marxism, aesthetics and culture are in fact principal concerns. In this respect, such Marxists are similar to their Western counterparts, although Europeans have had little understanding of the Chinese experience. Liu traces the genealogy of aesthetic discourse in both modern China and the West since the era of classical German thought, showing where conceptual modifications and divergences have occurred in the two traditions. He examines the work of Mao Zedong, Lu Xun, Li Zehou, Qu Qiubai, and others in China, and from the West he discusses Kant, Schiller, Schopenhauer, and Marxist theorists including Horkheimer, Adorno, Benjamin, and Marcuse. While stressing the diversity of Marxist positions within China as well as in the West, Liu explains how ideas of culture and aesthetics have offered a constructive vision for a postrevolutionary society and have affected a wide field of issues involving the problems of modernity.
Forcefully argued and theoretically sophisticated, this book will appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Marxism, cultural studies, aesthetics, and modern Chinese culture, politics, and ideology.

This richly rewarding book about ecology and technology draws on 40 years of careful thought. Although it does not dwell on information technologies, the points Snyder makes about "a feeling of place" are of interest to anyone who has mulled over the ways in which cyberspace jogs our normative notions of time, space, and community.

5 out of 5 stars Wide ranging insights into Gary Snyder's lifetime concerns.......2000-09-04

I bought this book, along with the poetry collection, No Nature, to gain an insight into the work of Gary Snyder, someone I had often seen quoted, but had never read at first hand. Snyder is perhaps best known as a west coast 'nature' poet, a fellow traveller of the 'beat generation', but he is also a prominent Buddhist, bioregional visionary and literary scholar. To judge from this book he is, moreover, an accomplished and eloquent essayist. The essays presented here, articles, reviews, talks and what might loosely be called manifestos, come mainly from the 70s to the 90s and span the breadth of Snyder's interests. Arranged in three sections, Ethics, Aesthetics and Watersheds, Snyder's writing manages to be poetic, religious, political and compelling at all times. Having read this book I feel inspired to read more, I'll try The Practice of the Wild next (more prose), followed by Turtle Island (poetry for which Snyder won the Pulitzer Prize). For anyone concerned to cultivate a humane relationship with the more-than-human world, Snyder is a surefooted guide.

Disintegration in Frames examines the ways in which national identity and interethnic relations are approached, evaluated, and critically dissected in films by directors such as Dušan Makavejev, Emir Kusturica, and Srdan Dragojevic; subcultural television and musical performances of the Bosnian pop-art movement New Primitivism; amateur video works made by the returning veterans of the Croatian war; political documentaries chronicling the psychological effects of state socialism; and more.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars much needed analysis of Yugoslav and post-Yu cinema.......2007-03-05

Disintegration in Frames is theoretically insightful, but never too dense to be inaccessible to general readership. The book is a great resource for anyone interested in the role of cinema in the formation of Yugoslav ethno-nationalisms (and cinema as a reflection of these ethno-nationalisms). The book is full of fun insights, such as the discussion of phallic connotations of the Yugoslav ritual of carrying "the baton of youth," and the reference to such pan-Yugoslav rituals in the work of New Primitivs in late 1980s and early 1990s: "sucking of the pole". The chapter on Yugoslav "black wave" is extremely insightful for anyone interested in the works of such masters as Dusan Makavejev, Zelimir Zilnik and Karpo Godina. Levi's critique of Emir Kusturica's work sets high standards for future scholarship on this director's work. Highly recommended.

Paul De Man's reputation was irreparably damaged by the revelation after his death of his wartime anti-Semitism, obscuring some valid intellectual contributions to the field of aesthetics. This collection of philosophical essays, compiled by Andrzej Warminski of the University of California, argues for the close connections between art and politics and art and science. He discusses Kant and Hegel, whose major contributions to aesthetics are less known than their work on rationality and morality. And in an essay on Schiller he deplores, rather naively, the poet/playwright's lack of philosophical concern for the basis of his art.

      Book Description

The Ideology of the Aesthetic presents a history and critique of the concept of the aesthetic throughout modern Western thought. As such, this is a critical survey of modern Western philosophy, focusing in particular on the complex relations between aesthetics, ethics and politics. Eagleton provides a brilliant and challenging introduction to these concerns, as characterized in the work of Kant, Schiller, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Heidegger, Lukacs, Adorno, Habermas, and others. Wide in span, as well as morally and politically committed, this is Terry Eagleton's major work to date. It forms both an original enquiry and an exemplary introduction.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Diehard critical theory.......2007-05-13

This is an excellent book that has helped me to answer questions about representation, ideology, and hegemony embedded in classically "non-representational" art forms such as music. Eagleton's writing style, as with other of his books that I have read, makes it easy to comprehend and internalize some of the thicker ideas of modern critical theory. As an academigeek I found that I couldn't put it down.

I have given this book only four stars, though, because of its conscious lack of attention to any category of oppression other than class. While I acknowledge that Eagleton states in the introduction that his focus on class is a means of re-introducing class to the area of critical theory that has more recently been dominated (and dismissed) by an emphasis on race and gender studies, this conscious omission is characteristic of some of the main concerns of contemporary studies in race and gender. Eagleton would not lose the edge of his finely tuned Marxist critical approach by acknowledging the intersections of class, race, and gender in his analysis; and he would find, in my opinion, that it enhances his argument regarding the prevalence and dissemination of ideology through aesthetic practice.

But despite my fundamental criticism of Eagleton's unidimensional approach, I consider this book to be one of the more important works I have found in helping to develop my approach to aesthetic criticism.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Ideo-Political History of Aesthetics.......2005-03-28

As an undergraduate, I found this book to be absolutely superb. First, it is a difficult read and it requires a close reading in order to fully understand the scope of Eagleton's theories on the aesthetic and its political foundations. Also, I recommend that one be familiar with the texts that Eagleton refers to in this historical analysis. In other words, I would first recommend a knowledge or basic understanding of Burke, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Heidegger, and Walter Benjamin.

The Ideology of the Aesthetic does not concern itself purely with the relationship between art and life, but begins with the nature of particulars and universals in knowledge. Next, using a historical analysis of the texts, Eagleton is able to flush out why the aesthetic became necessary within liberal societies during the 19th century. It asks why the aesthetic became so necessary as a tool for power and resistance. While there are Critical School/Marxist leanings, the book is, nonetheless, a fantastic read. In general, Eagleton is a particularly insightful scholar and I highly recommend his other works.

Particularly, this work was a fantastic guide for me in my research on the rise of the idea of the "aesthetic" state in the early 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars political and social aspects of the Great Depression bound in Faulkner's works.......2006-02-23

In seeing the barn-burning scene in "As I Lay Dying" as representing "the impulse toward revolution" and a section of Jason's narrative in "The Sound and the Fury" as indicating capitalism standing triumphant after a period beginning about 1890 "when the expanding mercantile economy with an industrial base substantially redefined America's socioeconomic order," Atkinson discloses how Faulkner can be read as a "Depression writer who, in keeping with the times, found his own means of radical and revolutionary expression." Overall, "Faulkner gave to Depression readers an order of things in which totalizing concepts of unity, organic wholeness, and harmony exist not as achievable ends but rather as tenuous constructs" always vulnerable to the natural human desire to pursue individual liberty in multifarious ways. This reading of Faulkner is not an alternative to the generally accepted one of Faulkner as dealing mainly with the rural culture, class and personal relationships, and the psychodynamics peculiar to the latter 1800's and early 1900's South, but it expands it considerably. Rather than seen only as regional inhabitants suffering from their incapacity to accept defeat and in often half-crazed ways trying to maintain a semblance of the traditional social structure, Faulkner's Southern characters can be seen as well as representative Americans dealing with economic hardships and uncertainties of the Depression and struggling with political questions and temptations relating to an authoritarian regime, forms of socialism, and the budding new order offered by Roosevelt. Faulkner's place in the literary politics of his time, a topic often passed by in critical work to unravel the complexities of his characters and his style, is also dealt with in developing how his work reflects the conditions and mentality of his time. Atkinson--who teaches at Augusta State U. in Georgia--sheds light on this broader view of this major American author active in the mid 1900s by focusing on individual characters, incidents, and circumstances in his novels.

          Book Description

Through the concept of “social choreography” Andrew Hewitt demonstrates how choreography has served not only as metaphor for modernity but also as a structuring blueprint for thinking about and shaping modern social organization. Bringing dance history and critical theory together, he shows that ideology needs to be understood as something embodied and practiced, not just as an abstract form of consciousness. Linking dance and the aesthetics of everyday movement—such as walking, stumbling, and laughter—to historical ideals of social order, he provides a powerful exposition of Marxist debates about the relation of ideology and aesthetics.

Hewitt focuses on the period between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth and considers dancers and social theorists in Germany, Britain, France, and the United States. Analyzing the arguments of writers including Friedrich Schiller, Theodor Adorno, Hans Brandenburg, Ernst Bloch, and Siegfried Kracauer, he reveals in their thinking about the movement of bodies a shift from an understanding of play as the condition of human freedom to one prioritizing labor as either the realization or alienation of embodied human potential. Whether considering understandings of the Charleston, Isadora Duncan, Nijinsky, or the famous British chorus line the Tiller Girls, Hewitt foregrounds gender as he uses dance and everyday movement to rethink the relationship of aesthetics and social order.

It includes indispensable information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), along with key excerpts of vital medical and clinical data from the just-released Federal Pandemic Influenza Plan, introduced by Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt in November 2005. “One of the most important public health issues our Nation and the world faces is the threat of a global disease outbreak called a pandemic. No one in the world today is fully prepared for a pandemic – but we are better prepared today than we were yesterday - and we will be better prepared tomorrow than we are today. This HHS Pandemic Influenza Plan provides a blueprint from which to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead of us.” Topics covered include: · Why flu pandemics occur; animal reservoirs; distinguishing pandemic strains from seasonal influenza; viruses; H5N1

              · Inactivated and Live Intranasal Influenza Vaccines An influenza pandemic is a global outbreak of disease that occurs when a new influenza A virus appears or “emerges” in the human population, causes serious illness, and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide. Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or “epidemics” of influenza. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza viruses that are already in existence among people, whereas pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or by subtypes that have never circulated among people or that have not circulated among people for a long time. Past influenza pandemics have led to high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss. There are many different subtypes of Influenza or “flu” viruses. The subtypes differ based upon certain proteins on the surface of the virus (the hemagglutinin or “HA” protein and the neuraminidase or the “NA” protein). Pandemic viruses appear (or “emerge”) as a result of a process called "antigenic shift,” which causes an abrupt or sudden, major change in influenza A viruses. These changes are caused by new combinations of the HA and/or NA proteins on the surface of the virus. This change results in a new influenza A virus subtype. The appearance of a new influenza A virus subtype is the first step toward a pandemic, but the new virus subtype also must spread easily from person to person to cause a pandemic. Once a new pandemic influenza virus emerges and spreads, it normally becomes established among people and moves around or “circulates” for many years as seasonal epidemics of influenza.

                  Book Description

With more than 205 species of owls worldwide, this book provides a fascinating species-by-species portrait of these marvellous, sometimes rare, members of natures family of birds. While many of the worlds often-photographed owls are wide ranging in terms of habitat, many lesser-known species such as the Cuban owl and the Jamaican owl are found only in smaller, more specific geographic locations. Such indigenous species as the Australian boobook owl, found only in the islands of Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia are compared and contrasted with other North American, European, and Asian Species in terms of habitat, adaptability, and physical appearance. The book traces the evolution of owls and their place within the avian order both as predators and as prey. And, because many species throughout the world are threatened due to environmental devastation caused by the worlds hunger for wood products, this book is intended to raise awareness about the plight of many lesser-known or rare owls. The book features an extensive section detailing the range and conservation status of every species of owl, including those on the brink of extinction and newly discovered species. (August 2003)
