Book Description

What makes a person confess to a crime he did not commit? Was he coerced? Is he trying to protect someone else? Interrogation has come under attack as opponents focus on false confessions. However, most cases are still resolved by confession, not forensic evidence. Among the new topics covered in the Second Edition of this bestselling book, Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation focuses on why false confessions exist and how to avoid them. Written by two experts who have conducted over 15,000 interviews and interrogations from theft to homicide, this book expands on the valuable topics in the previous edition to include discussions of: Telephone interviewing False Confessions Field Interviewing Sexual Harassment Interviewing Confronting the Alleged Harrasser Pre-employment Interviewing New Legal Aspects Frequently Asked Questions Covering the entire sequence of events that occur during the interview and interrogation process, this book provides a realistic building block approach that allows you to move from a preliminary accusation to an ultimate confession by applying practical rules to the process. It gives you the flexibility to select a number of different paths to proceed in an interrogation of a suspect. Useful in both the law enforcement and private sectors, Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation, Second Edition allows you to deal effectively with the complex problems of interviewing and interrogating victims, witnesses, suspects, and even potential employees.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation.......2007-03-09

I found this book to be very informative. A big part of my job is interview and interrogation. This book was able to put into context what I have already been doing for a number of years. I found that I was referencing the book in my head as I watched the people I was speaking with and knew by their actions how truthful or untruthful they were being. If this is the type of work you do the book is a very good read.

If the 20th century was the American century, the 21st century may be a time of reckoning for the United States. Chalmers Johnson, an authority on Japan and its economy, offers a troubling prognosis of what's to come. Blowback--the title refers to a CIA neologism describing the unintended consequences of American activity--is a call for the United States to rethink its position in the world. "The evidence is building up that in the decade following the end of the Cold War, the United States largely abandoned a reliance on diplomacy, economic aid, international law, and multilateral institutions in carrying out its foreign policies and resorted much of the time to bluster, military force, and financial manipulation," writes Johnson. "The world is not a safer place as a result." Individual chapters focus on Okinawa (where American servicemen were accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in "Asia's last colony"), the two Koreas, China, and Japan. The result is a liberal-leaning (and Asia-centric) call for the United States to disengage from many of its global commitments. Critics will call Johnson an isolationist, but friends (perhaps admirers of Patrick Buchanan's A Republic, Not an Empire) will say he simply speaks good sense. All will agree he is an earnest voice: "I believe our very hubris ensures our undoing." --John J. Miller

Book Description

The term 'blowback,' invented by the CIA, refers to the unintended results of American actions abroad. In this incisive and controversial book, Chalmers Johnson lays out in vivid detail the dangers faced by our overextended empire, which insists on projecting its military power to every corner of the earth and using American capital and markets to force global economic integration on its own terms. From a case of rape by U.S. servicemen in Okinawa to our role in Asia's financial crisis, from our early support for Saddam Hussein to our conduct in the Balkans, Johnson reveals the ways in which our misguided policies are planting the seeds of future disaster. In a new edition that addresses recent international events from September 11 to the war in Iraq, this now classic book remains as prescient and powerful as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly good.......2007-10-10

I came across this book when I was looking for the recently published book by Profs. Mearsheimer and Walt on the Israeli lobby. I was familiar with Chalmers Johnson's name, but knew nothing about his work. I just read Blowback and am eager to read the other two in his trilogy. I have a generally good awareness of the idiocy of most American foreign policy simply from reading newspapers regularly and well-researched books occasionally on foreign policy or political science or history - as well as from spending some time outside the USA at various times and in various roles.

The disparity between how the USA as an entity and through the citizens (mostly soldiers) it sends abroad to perform official roles behaves outside the confines of its borders and how the average citizen goes about his/her daily life and therefore perceives his/her country is frighteningly wide. However, I was truly stunned at the well-written, clearly well-researched and even-handed account that Prof. Johnson gives of USA policy and USA actions in regard in particular to Asia. I do not doubt the accuracy of his analysis and reporting. In support of his recounting of the utter waste of citizens' tax dollars on most military and military-related activity (so-called intelligence-gathering, covert undermining of non-dictatorial governments and the like) I noted that the Bush Administration recently (summer 2007) had one of its flunkies start blathering about the fact that the USA maintains bases throughout the world, notably in Western European countries, Okinawa and Korea even though there are no "hostilities" there.

The inadvertent raising of a pertinent issue regarding the USA military presence (in less polite words, occupation) in those countries was quickly excised from the arguments for establishing a permanent military presence in Iraq. Good point. Why does the USA maintain a military presence in these countries? Mr. Johnson's book admirably traces the why and thereby makes clear the horrible impact our presence in these countries has had on many people in the world and in turn on innocents in the USA, such as those who died at the hands of Tim McVeigh and the suicide airline pilots. It is books like Mr. Johnson's that should be on the forefront of discussion among politicians, editorial-writers and any others who attempt to make or debate policy. As the inanities, nonsense and outright lies that have no basis whatsoever in fact emanating from the current roster of right-wing, know-nothing Republicans in Congress - abetted on occasion by poorly informed Democrats - attest, the current unending propaganda regarding events and conditions in the rest of the world, notably in Iraq and in the Middle East in general, is likely to continue to overwhelm outstanding analyses such as this. I wish it wouldn't. I hope that those with some curiosity about the wonders and diversity of the world - not to mention facts about how the USA and other countries behave in the world - will discover this book as I did.

1 out of 5 stars Blowback? Nah---mainly just Blow........2007-08-23

Chalmers Johnson might very well have entitled this manifestly overrated little jeremiad of gloom, doom, and rice-paddy Manchurian manifest destiny "Everything I know about Geopolitics I learned from the Golden Rule".

That's "Blowback": do unto others, O Mighty Great Satan, as you would have them do unto you. Or as the learned geo-strategist and member of the Council on Foreign Relations grandmaster funk-flash rapper extra-ordinaire Jay-Z once put it (in verse, and to a funky hip-hop beat, which is *way* more than Johnson accomplishes in this nearly cranium-anesthetizing snoozer):

"now you shoot my my dog/
I'ma gonna kill yo' cat/
just the unwritten Laws/
in Rap."

Word. Basically, Johnson is saying that all those nasty, naughty, uber-meanie things the U.S. did (or might have done, deniability, baby, deniability) in the last century (and now, yes, tiresomely the first part of the 21st century) are gonna come back to haunt us. Payback's a bizzle, fo shizzle.

Or, to dip deeply into the cliche snuffbox, what goes around, comes around. Or better still, if you're up for Chinese---4th BC Chinese---: "if you sit by the River long enough, you will see the bodies of all your enemies float by."

There: in this review, you've gotten the gist of Johnson's 'argument', and you've saved yourself the misery of having "Blowback" inflicted on you. You should be grateful.

OK: so example---we helped supply, feed, & train the Mujahadeen to fight a nasty and ultimately successful insurgency against the Soviets. The Jihadis won, kicked the Soviets out, and replaced a doddering, backward, socially repressive & economically retarded 19th century system with a---get this---doddering, backward, socially repressive & economically retarded 7th century system.

Progress? Yes. Blowback? NO! Not Blowback, not that bit anyway. Blowback was what happened when the Taliban and their buddies (including our Bon Ami et Frere Amicable Osama bin "Gin & Juice" Laden) got tired of crushing homosexuals beneath stone walls, blowing up ancient Buddha statues, and strangling dogs. Those crazy Talibs! We got 9/11, the ultimate "blowback.". Or blowup. Or something like that.

Now, it's true that Chalmers Johnson's 'idea' has a nice, simple symmetry to it, in the same way the delightful childrens' potty book "Everything Poops" does: it's, well, true. And obvious.

But seen from a different angle (say, that of adulthood), it's a bit retarded. Or, let's be kind, simplistic. It says, if you, as an Empire, or Republic, or whatever you are---if you do something, something's going to happen. Man, go tell it to the Spartans! (or Newton). Actions have consequences. If you read "Blowback", for instance, the blowback might be that you hear your brain cells scream as they die.

Take the British, who for years now have done everything they can to pretend to be a stodgier, duller, more moldy version of Canada, & what has that gotten them? Flaming gate crashers at Glasgow airport and having their Royal Marines publicly humilated and dressed by Tehran's answer to Today's Man.

But like Paul Kennedy yammering, with yen besotted yuppies back in the early eighties, that the Land of the Rising Sun was about to make us all eat sushi and do Shinto devotionals before our morning calisthenics prior to ruling the World---well, Blowback is just not all that. It's too elementary, man: it's thermodynamical.

And in politics, in affairs of state, in war and manipulation & sabotage, in all of that, it's not even necessarily true. The point being: if you're brutal enough, there will be no blowback.

Think about that for a moment: you don't even have to consult antiquity for examples where if you're willing to play around in a little bit of blood and crack some skulls, there will be no real `blowback'. Russia has ruthlessly crushed & decimated Muslim movements in its former Asian provinces and puppet states, the latest being the pathetic instance of Chechnya. And for all that, I have yet to hear Russia denounced by any imams as even a moderate-sized Satan. Hell, Russia & Iran are great buddies, so long as the latter keeps those rent checks coming on the old Bushehr reactor.

China is another great example: for more than five decades, China has occupied Tibet and taken every step possible to destroy its society and culture. For all of that, wanna know China's "blowback" from this merciless, honestly fascist occupation? The 2008 Olympic Games, a few thousand pathetic "Free Tibet" bumper sticker affixed to the bumpers of liberals' Priuses, & Richard Gere.

To dragoon Orwell's delicious little phrase, if you stomp on a man's face long and hard enough---you know, until you hear bone snap & soft tissue turns to jelly and the eyeballs pop out---there ain't gona be enough to---well, blow back.

In summary: Chalmers gets a big fat F for his stupid "Blowback" and should wear a duncecap in public.

That said, I can find one example---right here, right now!---that supports Johnson's thesis. Are you ready?

Johnson writes his tired, pathetic, dull little ratturd of a book.

In return, I gut his book like a sick fish in a quick and deadly online review.

Now that's what I call blowback.

JSG

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2007-08-17

The book's idea is that US foreign policy, made to win the cold war, has consequences. For instance, in '53 when we installed the Shah of Iran to act as a puppet for the West (overthrowing the democratically elected Mosaddeq because of oil) he repressed the people until he was overthrown in Jan. 1979. We'd be crazy to believe that the people who overthrew Persia's most ruthless dictator not be anti-American (since we installed that dictator). To this day I see people asking why Iran's government dislikes the US - "Do they hate us for our freedoms?" Taking this idea of "unintended consequences," Johnson talks specifically about East Asia and its history during the Cold War and after. In particular, he mentions Indonesia, Korea, China, and Japan.

I found the book very enlightening. Since 9/11 the US news and media's idea of international news coverage has been Middle-Eastern news coverage (except for natural disasters around the world and other frivolous events). Also, I went to public-school - I didn't know anything about Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries (and I took all AP history classes). So, there was this vacuum of knowledge about East Asia I had, which this book filled quite nicely.

Also mentioned in the book, briefly, are neoclassical economics, WTO, IMF, World Bank, 1997 economic crisis, Hungarian revolution, and the '73 Chilean coup as well as some other US interventions in the Middle-East.

3 out of 5 stars Very informative, but drawn out and wordy............2007-08-04

This book is very informative and the first and last chapters are worth paying for the entire thing just to read them. Not the most Pro-American book I've ever read, but will give you an interesting take on things. Very in depth and revealing. Certainly shows how our American Empire can throw our weight around when necessary - and when not. Not bad, but a bit too wordy for me. Still good though.

5 out of 5 stars Pull Your Head Out or Die With It In The Sand.......2007-07-17

This book deserves five stars, but I can tell you it's nothing like listening to this man speak in person. As in "Blowback" he lays it all out on the table. Sadly he says, "We just may have gone pass the point of no return." Americans now know that authors like Chalmers Johnson, Norm Chomsky, Webster Griffin Tarpley and Paul Waldman are not just over-educated nay sayers. We know that we're in real trouble, we just don't know what to do about it. If 9/11 proved nothing else, it proved that aircraft carriers, F16's, and smart bombs are useless against terrorists and apathy.

Dr. Johnson summarizes the status quo: "We have a strong civil society that could, in theory, overcome the entrenched interests of the armed forces and the military-industrial complex. At this late date, however, it is difficult to imagine how Congress, much like the Roman senate in the last days of the republic, could be brought back to life and cleansed of its endemic corruption. Failing such a reform, Nemesis, the goddess of retribution and vengeance, the punisher of pride and hubris, waits patiently for her meeting with us."

I am without the education to travel in the circles of the aforementioned authors, but I can in my own way address my fellow blue collar workers... The media has dubbed me one of America's most controversial writers. I think it's because I criticize my own party, the Republican Party, instead of the Democrats. This unorthodox approach of mine gives people the wrong idea about me. I don't hate predators. If there weren't hawks in this country, those in other countries would show up here. Do not misinterpret "Hawk" to mean I approve of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney and their Hermann Goering protégés in the Pentagon. Bush is a mouth and a pen; he's in a different league altogether than his vice president. Cheney is a vulgar, immoral, sadistic subhuman. Does that make me a Libertarian?

5 out of 5 stars Fowler surfs the waves of educational public policy!.......2003-05-01

An excellent source of information for the layperson or serious student of American education systems. Dr. Fowler explains in great detail a variety of such substantive areas as the meaning of policy; power and education; a discussion of the policy environment; some types of political systems and culture; ideological and value systems; who sets the stage in the making of education policy; the various stages of the policy process and so forth. Enjoyable! Thorough! Substantive!

4 out of 5 stars Educational Leaders.......2001-03-13

This book was very easy to read and understand. Coming from a teaching background, and not knowing anything about policy making, this book was a true education. I used it in my grad class, and every student commented on the ease of understanding and the interest in the text. This is a must buy if you want to learn anything about education, teaching or being an administrator!

In November this country will elect the first President of the New Millennium and as such we as a nation have an obligation to make sure that we understand the issues and the ramifications of the choices made by those we elect to govern us. This book will delve deep into 21 issues that have a major impact on what happens in the next century.

Dividing the book into six parts or sections, the authors take a look at such topics as global economy, national & international security, democracy, conflict resolution, Environment and health. They then break down each section and present the issue that are core to that topics.

What surprised me most about this book is that the authors never, repeat never tell you how to think, they instead give you arguments from both sides and you must make the most informed decision possible. The book is the first I have read that is truly a debate about the issues rather than a political bashing of one party or the other.

387 pages of a first class work makes this book a must read for every voter. This is also a great additional text reference for every first time voter to make sure that they understand what is facing this nation. Outstanding work and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Great way in understanding what was going on.......2000-04-04

When I read this book , I thought its diverse topics which has been written by the professionals of its area, made the issues of contemporary politics clearer in understanding, and percieving either for beginners or others. The format and the concept are very useful for the students and the instructors to discuss in the class. The issues begin with globalization, the most talked and debated phenomena of recent two decades, through environment and health, rising a new dimension of politics. You can find almost everything what you would interested in today's global politics. The pro-con format of the book provide an in-depth analysis of two sides making the controversy as a battle of thoughts. Also the discussion questions provide the student more complex evolutionary process of brainstorming. Finally, the book is a must read for the international relations students as well as the others in political science . I think this kind of edited books are very helpful. Thanks for Mr. Scott's great effort.

5 out of 5 stars 5 on the AP Test.......2007-08-08

This is a great resource, especially in conjunction with other notes and study materials. It shouldn't be the sole basis of your AP test review, but it presents a lot of the essential ideas, concepts and facts. And it helped me get a 5 on the AP test.

2 out of 5 stars not enough info.......2007-05-01

the review is very vague, important vocabulary is not highlighted, just a sort of rambling by the author that reviews random parts of what you need to know. also the author says things like "you should have learned about this in your textbook and if you don't remember go back and look in your textbook" a lot which really defeats the purpose of a review book. i think this can only be helpful if you REALLY know your stuff and just need a very light review but in that case you probably don't even need this book. also i don't like that there are no multiple choice questions at the end of every section. at the end of every section there is a review that consists of a paragraph or two with blanks that you have to fill in with arbitrary words.

    Book Description

Proper interviewing and interrogation techniques can significantly affect the success of an investigation. This new edition of a bestseller explores the complex challenges of basic and advanced interview and interrogation techniques, focusing on determining behavior from body language, speech, and written statements. Principles of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation, Second Edition includes findings from the author's research project on demeanor, credibility, and interview and interrogation behavior conducted through the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and funded as part of a special project by the U.S. Government. These findings were presented at the American Psychological Association meeting, which shows the reach of the subject outside of the typical forensic and law enforcement markets.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Might be a useful reference for professionals.......2007-09-07

This book contains basic methods for interviews/interrogations, mostly in relation to criminal investigations by authorities. It is not by any means an intensive academic/scientific/military study, although there are such references to past studies and references, namely one by Rand Corp. in relation to the importance of interviewing victims and witnesses.

The book is seriously lacking in deeper interrogation/intel gathering methods and/or advanced strategies during interviews, although Chapter 4 has some interesting takes on "Verbal Content", along with Chapter 5's "Information Recovery and Statement-Credibility Assessment".

One seriously negative aspect is the author's failure in defining VAST cultural kinesic differences, behavioral and linguistic/verbal differences amongst varying cultures, and especially failing to address backgrounds of pathological liars and career criminal manipulators of human interaction. There wasn't even an index listing for either "pathological liars" or "cultural uniqueness/definitions of kinesic behaviors".

I tend to believe that ANY novice who has no prior investigative training and/or skills and uses this book alone, would very easily misread many natural innocent human behaviors, as well as that same novice who might easily be taken in by "professional" career criminals.

Upside: The ABSOLUTE BEST STATEMENT IN THIS BOOK, as quoted from chapter one, "The first and most important of all Basic Practical Kinesic Prinicples is: No single kinesic behavior, verbal or nonverbal, proves a person is truthful or deceptive."

Chapter 6 provides at least 92 photographs of kinesics examples in relation to nonverbal behaviors with descriptions and discussions of the examples.

Downside: Most basic negative connotations would be the interrogator's inability to REALLY discern guilt from kinesics alone, but in the ability to collect behaviors, statements, interviews, evidence, etc, that might help LEAD an investigator "closer to the truth". The other downside is the dry writing style, along with what could have been better organized materials and cultural differences, especially noting the MANY unique behaviors amongst our myriad of foreign residents in this country that could EASILY be misinterpreted by an interrogator with no prior outside cultural experiences!

4 out of 5 stars Good effort, but you should cross-reference studies.......2005-06-25

I'm up to page 200 and while I usually wait for the end of any book to write a review, I felt compelled to write one now.-----------

I want to open this review by clearly stating that no person should ever agree to be interviewed by law enforcement, guilty or innocent. No lawyer worth his hourly should ever suggest that his client be interview by law enforcement unless he is granted full immunity. The Unites States unlike our European brother countries can legally use deception to get a confession. Police investigators are powerless within the court systems. There is no reason to speak with them directly. If something needs to be confessed, it should be between your attorney and the district attorney.------------

I have law enforcement experience with the NYPD and have read most of the "lie detection" literature available. I've read the Eckman books, the Wiley Series books, and references to studies included and referred to in the Walters book which I found shortly after reading "Detecting Lies and Deceit : The Psychology of Lying and the Implications for Professional Practice" by Vrij. The Vrij book is a good read and you'll be flipping pages to get a good understanding of tests results.-------------

Let me first state from experience, that unfortunately, the NYPD uses the Lieberman approach of pop science, which the Walters book (Kinesic) accurately states, is not an effective tool. The Lieberman book titled "Never Be Lied to Again" is what appears to be on law enforcements guide on "how to" interview and interrogate. I've also witnessed interviewing where arrested persons were denied council for nearly 10 hours as multiple detectives hammered away at them while being cuffed to wooden chairs in a forced slumped position. Bathroom breaks are a privilege and only in trade if you gave them something incriminating. Under these circumstances, people will eventually break even if they did not commit the crime. When the documents were passed to the ADA, I was astonished to read that the perp had never requested a lawyer although I witnessed some of them near crying to speak to a lawyer. Interviewing tactics seem to vary and no formal rules exist. Direct accusation of suspects and a poorly played hand of poker is the method of questioning. Exactly what the above literature states NOT to do, is what appears to be commonplace. ---------

This book is not a bad book, but is misleading. The author calls quotes of research papers and studies to support his claims. The part that really annoyed me is that I read these papers prior to reading this book and his claims of support are not in context with the results of research. Research has show that law enforcement at its best was only able to detect deceit at most 50% of the time. Actually, law enforcement scored lower because overall, the national average IQ of law enforcement was 106 while the standard college test subjects IQ was higher. Law enforcement was unable to fully utilize the information provided to them either because of skepticism or because of their impeded mental dynamics.----------

This book claims in some instances that the suspect is likely to not be truthful by observation of speech and motion, which include clustering. This assumption at best can be 50% accurate. Body language is subjective and is clearly and statistically analyzed in the Vrij book, which also refers to the same authors as Walters uses. An investigator should expect an adversarial encounter, fidgeting, grooming, and other signs of normal and stress induced activities. The author does make some good points about items that manifest themselves under stress. He also points out some conversation clues that a perp could literally hand to an experience investigator that can be followed up on.-------------

Overall, this book can be used as a guide of what not to do as pointed out by the author. The author bases conclusions on lies based on stress related clustering of actions and discretion on observing these actions. The author clearly states that the interviewer should not have a bias toward the subject, but this is clearly not the case as the book progresses. The objective in this book is to get a confession although it states that a false confession is not the objective. True confession or false confession, most police departments just want the confession. Let the DA handle the specifics.-----------

Why do American police have the highest confession rates? The simple fact that the person in the "hot seat" is a suspect resulting from an investigation. The subject is law enforcements most probable perpetrator. There is a high probability that this person is guilty. With the lax rules in questioning and because criminals as a whole are not usually intelligent, confessions are not that difficult to extract. Criminals that are more affluent know enough to request an attorney as soon as they are approached by law enforcement.--------------

This book can help the pop science culture of police investigators realize their mistakes. The book will help the reader identify patterns of a subject. I would not take Walters word on "this subject is probably being deceptive" with actions pointed out in his book because most of his stressed and supposedly deceptive subjects were showing "normal" behavior under stress. His idea of changes in patterns is noteworthy. This book can also help perps derail interviews by tossing in false body language and slips to create an environment where the investigator is running in circles. This idea struck me as unique. What would happen if the interviewee were more polished on interviewing tactics then the interviewer? ------------

5 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language.......2005-04-21

This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.

Too often, Walters observed other questioning officers depend on 'gut instinct', racial bias, intimidation, or pre-conceived notions of the interviewee's guilt. Walters admits that police are surprisingly able to solicit false confessions, especially from mentally deficient or emotionally weak interviewees. So, his ultimate goal is to help police identify the real perpetrators of crimes via the perpetrator's own truthful confession of guilt.

In the first theoretical half of the book, Walters introduces kinesic theory (i.e. recognizing non-verbal signals) and the five stages of stress response (anger, depression, denial, bargaining, acceptance). Then he goes on to explain how these stress response stages can be identified in interviewee subjects and provides 90 photographs of subjects' body language movements.

In the second practical half of the book, Walters gives specific instructions on how to conduct interrogations, especially by customizing each interview according to the interviewee's personality type. He also explains the pitfalls of what many 'traditional' interrogators do wrong and how to avoid them. In addition, the interviewer and interviewee must speak the same native language and come from the same culture - often a problem for military interrogators.

This is an excellent practical textbook on how to conduct and secure a (truthful) confession, given a patient, practiced, and conscientious interviewer. Walters admits, however, it still takes practice and involves a lot of hard work - always reading interviewees' behaviors.

5 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation.......2002-10-04

Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Criminal Investigator.......2000-05-11

Principals of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation is a well written and well researched look into the physical and physcological traits of a deceptive person. As a criminal investigator with a large Department I have found it to be an invaluable resource. Stan Walters insights and experiences are related in understandable easy to read terms. An excellent book.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2007-09-19

People who have read other books on China will get a lot out of this, because so much of it focuses on the way China's government functions and the way different areas of the government interact with one another (which is missed in other books). Other reviews have rightly stated that China's foreign policy and other areas are left out of the discussion. Books by Andrew Nathan ("Great Wall & Empty Fortress" for foreign policy), Nicholas Lardy ("Integrating China into the Global Economy"), and John Bryan Starr ("Understanding China" for a general overview) should be read first in my opinion before picking up this book.

4 out of 5 stars Makes things clear.......2003-05-05

This is a very good book on how China actually works. For those of us who did not know a thing about this country it really sums it up nicley. This book tells how Mao and Deng pushed China to make it better. It goes in depth on how those two pushed the cadres into early retirment to bring in younger workers who new about the mordern technology and who were also more highly educated. I also really enjoyed how the author made clear how China is and can affect the future of the U.S and the entire world.

5 out of 5 stars Great book--new edition reportedly in the works.......2001-04-09

This book is a great introduction to the topic, but is becoming somewhat dated for those who are looking for analysis of the past five years. Lieberthal was busy guiding Clinton's China policy on the National Security Council--no time for writing. Reportedly he has begun work on a new edition.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous First Look.......2001-01-31

Chinese politics is incredibly tricky. We tend to think of Mao and Deng so dominating this nation that we forget that no one, not even Mao, can rule 1 billion people without a bureaucracy. I agree with the review below that someone trying to look in depth at a topic in Chinese politics will not be satisfied with this work. That's not its point, though. This and Baum's Burying Mao are two books that a reasonably intelligent reader can read on their own in order to get the basics. This does not deal much with international policy or with explicit comparisons between the Soviet and Chinese states. However, Lieberthal lays out clearly the ministries, their responsibilities and what happened when Mao, in his staggeringly limited vision, decided to bypass the massive structures that made the nation work.

Though limited temporally, this sets the stage for the rise of the Chinese Communists and works allows a reader, without wading through too much minutae, to understand what it was that Mao set out to accomplish, how much Deng undid, and what was actually set into motion within the Party and government when these two historical giants flung the nation at a new idea.
