    Book Description

None of the Above is a state-of-the-art volume about current debates regarding Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans, both in the United States and on the Island. The title simultaneously refers to the results of a non-binding 1998 plebiscite held in San Juan to determine the Island's political status, the ambiguities that have historically characterized Puerto Rican political agency, and the complexities of Puerto Rican ethnic, national, and cultural identifications.

      Book Description

Latinos are the fastest growing racial ethnic group in the United States. Despite the fact that they will soon outnumber African Americans, Latinos are often excluded from discussions of race by a binary black/white paradigm. Challenging Fronteras exposes the limitations of this paradigm, which fails to describe the complex reality of America's changing and multi-ethnic population. The editors have assembled a group of essays that resist the stereotypes that frame Americans' perceptions of race, moving beyond superficial treatments of Latinos as a monolithic group. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the diversity of Latino cultures and experiences in the United States.

While food, music, clothing, and other elements of Latino material culture have been incorporated into the mainstream, Amerian schools continue to neglect Latino history, politics, socio-economic conditions, family life, and educational experiences. At the same time that educators continue to exclude such topics from their courses, legislation like California's Proposition 187 seeks to exclude the children of Latino immigrants from the education system itself. Several of the contributors examine the immigration experiences of groups from different Latin American nations. Other contributors reflect upon how Latinos living in the United States identify themselves.

Sections cover topics such as immigration, concepts and theories of ethnicity, identity, work and family life, and political and economic restructuring. Each section contains articles about several Latin groups. Tracing the intersection of race, class, gender, ethnicity and citizenship, the contributors expose the constraints that shape the lives of Latinos and explore the possibilies ahead.

The contributors, selected from leading scholars in Latino Studies, include Patricia Zavella, Suzanne Oboler, Alejandro Portes, Clara Rodriquez, Marta Tienda, Nestor Rodriquez. and others.

5 out of 5 stars THE LATINO HEALTH BIBLE.......2002-05-10

At a time when there is a proliferation of New Age books on Latinos on the shelves, it is refreshing to find such a serious and indepth collection of articles that explore the important issue of health in the Latino community. This is a comprehensive reader written by leading scholars and practitioners of Latino health issues. It represents an important follow-up to the editors' earlier pathbreaking reader on the subject. This is a serious academic textbook and is certainly not a light read, but it should be on the bookshelves of all persons and institutions concerned about the health status of the Latino community.

        Book Description

This first major collection of former Los Angeles Times reporter and columnist Ruben Salazar's writings, is a testament to his pioneering role in the Mexican American community, in journalism, and in the evolution of race relations in the U.S. Taken together, the articles serve as a documentary history of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and of the changing perspective of the nation as a whole.
Since his tragic death while covering the massive Chicano antiwar moratorium in Los Angeles on August 29, 1970, Ruben Salazar has become a legend in the Chicano community. As a reporter and later as a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, Salazar was the first journalist of Mexican American background to cross over into the mainstream English-language press. He wrote extensively on the Mexican American community and served as a foreign correspondent in Latin America and Vietnam. This first major collection of Salazar's writing is a testament to his pioneering role in the Mexican American community, in journalism, and in the evolution of race relations in the United States. Taken together, the articles serve as a documentary history of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and of the changing perspective of the nation as a whole.
Border Correspondent presents selections from each period of Salazar's career. The stories and columns document a growing frustration with the Kennedy administration, a young César Chávez beginning to organize farm workers, the Vietnam War, and conflict between police and community in East Los Angeles. One of the first to take investigative journalism into the streets and jails, Salazar's first-hand accounts of his experiences with drug users and police, ordinary people and criminals, make compelling reading.
Mario García's introduction provides a biographical sketch of Salazar and situates him in the context of American journalism and Chicano history.

          Book Description

This edited collection examines joint efforts by Latinos and African Americans to confront problems faced by populations of both groups in urban settings (in particular, socioeconomic disadvantage and concentration in inner cities). The essays address two major issues: experiences and bases for collaboration and contention between the two groups; and the impact of urban policies and initiatives of recent decades on Blacks and Latinos in central cities.

            Book Description

What are "Latin looks"? A Latin look may seem at first blush to be something that everyone recognizes-brunette, sensual, expressive, animated, perhaps threatening. But upon reflection, we realize that these are the images that are prevalent in the media, while the reality in Latino communities is of a rich diversity of people and images. This book brings together a selection of the best, the most interesting, and the most analytically sophisticated writing on how Latinos have been portrayed in movies, television, and other media since the early years of the twentieth century and how images have changed over time in response to social and political change. Particular emphasis is given to representations of class, gender, color, race, and the political relationship between the United States and Latin America. Together the essays offer a corrective lens for interpreting how images are created, perpetuated, and manipulated.

This text lays out the basic facts of Latino America--who Latinos are, where they come from, where they reside--and then connects these facts to political realities of immigration, citizenship, voting, education, organization, and leadership. Author John A. Garc'a brings thirty years of experience in all aspects of politics, policy, and academic theory to bear in painting a nuanced portrait of contemporary Latino political life.

                Book Description

A bold corporate and environmental history, Green Empire examines the intersection of one of the most ambitious players in Florida's real estate market with the state's last frontier--the quiet natural spaces of the Panhandle.

Since the Great Depression, the St. Joe Company (formerly the St. Joe Paper Company) has been Florida's largest landowner, a forestry and transportation conglomerate whose influence has been commensurate with its holdings. The company owns nearly one million acres, mainly in northwestern Florida, where undeveloped coastal and riverside landscapes boast some of the state's most scenic and ecologically diverse areas.

For 60 years, the company focused on growing trees, turning them into paper, and managing its ancillary businesses. In the late 1990s, the company shifted directions: it sold its paper mill, changed its name, and launched a concerted drive to turn its natural-resource assets into greater profits. Today the St. Joe Company is a critical and fiscally powerful force in the real-estate development of northwest Florida, with access to the most influential people in government. Poised to reshape the rural Panhandle, the company and its subsidiaries have the potential to permanently and drastically alter the landscape, environment, and economic foundation of the region.

Based on hundreds of sources--including company executives, board members, and investors as well as outside observers--this factual and balanced history describes the St. Joe Company from the days of its founders to the workings and dealings of its present-day heirs. For all readers concerned with land use and growth management, particularly those with an interest in Florida's fragile wildlife and natural resources, this book will generate important debate about an often-overlooked part of the state and will invite public scrutiny of its largest landowner.

                3 out of 5 stars mish mash.......2005-10-12

After reading these great reviews on Green Empire I decided to purchase the book and develop an understanding of the St Joe history. While the authors have an incredible amount of history and facts ammassed there did not seem to be a flow to the "story". Several instances of jumping around back and forth with facts made this more of a school book than an enjoyable read. Should you want facts this is great, a book to curl up with...no.

If you're interested in North Florida history and politics, then this is the best recent book on such matters. As a North Floridian and history fan for 33 years, even I learned a lot about such matters. Well written, researched and documented.

As an investor in residential rental property primarily in Destin, Florida I wanted to learn about the explosive growth in the Panama City Beach area. My research led me to a web site of West Bay County's growth plans and the tremendous influence of St Joe on the entire area. I wanted to learn more and was delighted to see that the Green Empire had recently been published. The book is extremely well written, and provides a balanced approach in addressing the economic, environmental and political issues involved in developing this area. The book is a textbook on environmental planning, political processes and macro econonomic issues, but a real "page turner" as well. It is in part a detective story as well as a primer for those interested in learning more about and participating in the dynamic growth of this new Florida frontier.

5 out of 5 stars Green Empire is a great read.......2004-04-13

The authors of Green Empire have done the people of the Florida Panhandle a great service. This thoughful and engaging book offers insights about one of Florida's most powerful companies--the St. Joe Company--and the way developers achieve their ends. The authors have clearly done their research. The book is filled with interesting facts about the history of the development of northwest Florida, beginning at the turn of the century. The book also provides a look at the influencial people--Alfred DuPont and Ed Ball, in particular--behind this development. Anyone who has witnessed an area's natural beauty give way to urbanization and development will appreciate the work the authors put into this book to shed light on how this happens. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
