4 out of 5 stars has a good part on the legal status of the divided states.......2000-08-27

Few books on international law ever touched upon the problem of the legal status of the divided status. Yet Prof. von Glahn has a section specifically devoted to the discussion of the problem of divided states under international law.

Also, I found his use of cases to illustrate the various issue in international law especially helpful. Otherwise, the teacher and students have to go to another case book such as the one put out by Briggs to find the cases.

5 out of 5 stars too expensive for its worth.......1998-11-19

The author wastes 3 chapters trying to have the fittest explanation of international law's legitimacy. However, there is no need to dwell on such reasons and waste valuable space. The case studies were very crucial for every international law undergraduate, therefore, they were very useful tools in developing the analytical skils of readers. Nevertheless, he could have provided an overview of the history of similar cases, together with the countries which may have signed treaties.

Book Description

Hans Morgenthau's classic text established realism as the fundamental way of thinking about international relations. Although it has had its critics, the fact that it continues to be the most long lived text for courses in international relations attests to its enduring value. Someone has said the study of international relations has for half a century been nothing so much as a dialogue between Morgenthau, those who embrace his approach, and those who turn elsewhere for enlightenment. After 50 years, the dialogue between Morgenthau and scholars from around the world continues more or less as in the past something with more intensity even in an "age of terror."
The new edition preserves intact Morgenthau's original work while adding a 40 page introduction by the editors who explore its relevance for a new era. What follows the introduction are the perspectives of a dozen statesmen, scholars, and observers each offering insights on Morgenthau's concepts and ideas as they relate to current crises on every continent. They bring up to date the dialogue that began in 1948.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Guide to International Politics.......2007-10-08

When Hans Morgenthau's now-classic work first appeared in 1948, it put forth a "Realist" theory of international politics and quickly became the most influential book on the subject. Its success was due to the fact that it explained what international relations was about: A struggle for power among sovereign states in an anarchic world. Ideology, religion, and morality all played secondary roles in this struggle, and in fact served as useful covers for a government's true goal of obtaining more power. For a realist, the national interest was defined in terms of acquiring more power. The drive for power was seen as ingrained in states as it was in human nature. Since national power was such a central part of his concept, Morgenthau detailed the elements of state power. Morgenthau then went on to explain the limitations on national power, the main limitation being states balancing against each other through alliances. Nor did Morgenthau ignore ethics, noting international conventions on the protection of human life in war and peace. Turning to the question of how peace could be achieved, Morgenthau argued the anarchic international system made peace impossible through disarmament, collective security international government, international law, or cultural ties, since the conditions that create peace in domestic society do not exist in international society. Morgethau believed the best way to limit war was through the judicious use of diplomacy; Its use could not prevent all wars, but at least a few. "Politics Among Nations" was well-written and accesible to most audiences. Morgenthau used historical examples and quotes from statesman and philosophers to buttress his claims.

"Politics Among Nations" began to be supplanted as the primary realist work in 1979 with the publication of Kenneth Waltz "Theory of International Politics." Waltz tried to use a more scientific approach to the study on international affairs. Gone were quaint anecdotes, replaced by rigor and methodology. Waltz main improvement on Morgenthau's work was the explanation of the importance of anarchy in international relations: Anarchy forces states to protect themselves. Waltz didn't see states as quite as aggressive as Morgenthau did, however. A third major work on international relations was published by John Mearsheimer in 2001. In "The Tragedy of Great Power Politics," Mearsheimer essentially squared Morgenthau and Waltz's theories. Like Morgenthau, Mearsheimer argued that states seek as much power as they can get, and backed up his claim with impressive historical evidence. But Morgenthau's theory had missed a major component: He didn't really explain exactly why states seek hegemony, just that they did. This is where Mearsheimer filled in Waltz contribution: Anarchy forces states to seek not just security, but as much power as they can get to maintain their security. Both Waltz and Mearsheimer acknowledged their debt to Morgenthau.

It can no longer be said that "Politics Among Nations" is the premiere text in international politics, as the preface claims. But it is still one of the most important books ever written on the subject, an excellent guide to the bewildering world of international politics. Moreover, since Morgenthau's death, it has been revised and updated by Morgenthau's able pupil, Kenneth W. Thompson. Morgenthau's clarity of though, accessible writing style, and humanity will never be outdated, even if a couple of his concepts are.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-03-11

This book by Morgenthau is nevere olding classic. Even today it gives answers to many questions about what is going on among states. Really it is a book that everyone who specializes on international relations or even just is interested on it should read and even once.
This last edition is the best. Execelent structure, execelent very convinient design.

5 out of 5 stars The World Leaders' Guide to the World.......2006-03-08

Forget about the clowns on cable television news shows that are always yelling at each (no matter what their and your politics are).

Forget about Oprah, Dr. Phil, Maureen Dowd (even though she's always very sultry), Noam Chomsky, etc. Forget about Rush Limbaugh, the Christian Coalition, the lunatic professor in Colorado (whatever his name is). Most of all, forget about Tom Friedman (author/NYT columnist -- read my review on THE WORLD IS FLAT for my views on him).

Do you want to know HOW the world works in terms of international relations? Read this book.

Do you want to know WHY it works that way? Read this book.

The concepts and ideas in this book cover the fundamentals, but it doesn't just gloss over them... it covers them in detail and from all angles... and, by doing so, the reader will get a clearer and firmer understanding of current events, governmments' actions and non-actions, etc.

Why does this book continue to endure in value? Because it focuses on the fundamentals of action/non-action and the reasons "why." It is NOT about the flavor-of-the-month topic. It's a no-nonsense book and comes with serious analyses, thoughts, theories, conclusions and arguments.

I'd recommend this book to readers of all stripes, whether you're a pacifist, lunatic fringe, status quo conservative, environmentalist, obsessed with human or animal rights (or both), etc.

After you read this book, you'll never watch the news channels or read the paper the same way ever again.

The "old testament":

1- Politics Among Nations (Morgenthau)
2- On War (Clausewitz)
3- The Federalist Papers (Hamilton, Madison, Jay)
4- The Prince and The Discourses (Machiavelli)
5- The Twenty Years' Crisis (Carr)

5 out of 5 stars Concise and eloquent.......2005-05-11

I originally bought this book for a class that has nothing to do with my major field of study. Two semesters later, I still find myself quoting from it. This is a tell-tale sign of a worthwhile investment.
It does start out a bit dense, but while I read the beginning parts several times over, it was well worth the time and effort. Reams worth of seemingly timeless insight into great power relations and the nature of both explicit and implicit hegemonic interactions are packed into a concise single volume without any apparent loss of eloquence.
It made for a good complement to Donald Kagan's "The Origins of War and the Preservation of Peace", which is a less theoretical volume of case studies exploring the historical causes and contexts of certain past hegemonic hostilities.

5 out of 5 stars Writing the review from a neo-realist approach.......2005-02-03

Politics Among Nations, is articulated, well organized and integrated with numerous crucial elements of politics. The systematic presentation of the definition of national power, the limitations of national power and the ways to peace not only illustrates the historical development and the trend of international politics, but also brings some insights to the reader.

I would like to draw your attention to Morgenthau's "nationalistic universalism", he believes that "...the nationalistic universalism of our age claims for one nation and one state the right to impose its own valuations and standards of action upon all the other nations"(p.273). Indeed, Morgenthau not only explains the ideological conflict between two superpowers during the Cold War, but he also foresees the motives of American foreign policy nowadays. Last but not least, Morgenthau successfully predicts that a united Western Europe (European Union) will be formed in order to strengthen its power in resisting the nationalistic universalism from the other states; the united Western Europe will expand its influence to others too (civilian power or soft power).

Classical realism is very useful to explain the motives and actions of various powers, however, it cannot be fully applied to the cases of middle power, small power or the potential great power. For example, realist's balance of power fails to explain the state, who is not a member in the alliance system, not a buffer state, and not the balancer. However, the role of this kind of state is indispensable in balance of power, because of her certain influence on other states. India is the best example to illustrate the above argument.

Potential great power such as India has addressed the importance of multipolarity. After the Second World War, India adopted the non-alignment policy. On one hand, India did not want to line up with the Soviet Union. On the other hand, India surely wanted to lay down her regional power status by resisting the American influence. The role of India in the balance of power is vague in the above situation. Although India was totally no match with the two superpowers, India still found an important role by extending her influence among the developing countries. In this case, potential great power searches all the ways to become or create one of the blocs within the system, but this power is hardly to upset the existing balancing order. Thus, I suggest if you are interested in studying the role of state, especially from the structural perspective, you may read the following book.

Kenneth Waltz's structural / defensive realism, Theory of International Politics.

Benjamin Netanyahu's primer on pro-Israel politics is an updated version of an earlier book, A Place Among the Nations. There's a good reason for the revision, of course: in the years since the first book was published, Netanyahu has served as the prime minister of Israel. Yet A Durable Peace is not a stale politician's memoir. It's a resounding plea for Israel's acceptance as a full member of the world community, as well as a call for understanding its unique security needs.

Netanyahu displays his knack--perfect for the television era but also helpful on these pages--for channeling complex ideas into pithy statements. Here's Netanyahu on the importance of Israel to the Jewish people: "If there had been a Jewish state in the first half of the [20th] century, there would have been no Holocaust. And if there had not been a Jewish state after the Holocaust, there would have been no Jewish future." On the need for Arab concessions in the peace process: "For the sake of peace, [the Arab states] must renounce their claims to part of the four ten-thousandths--.0004--of the lands they desire, which constitute the very heart of the Jewish homeland and the protective wall of the Jewish state." These are the statements of a skilled debater, and they represent a one-sided view of Middle Eastern politics. Yet Netanyahu also provides an excellent introduction to Zionism and the need to protect a small country against neighbors who have waged war against it. --John J. Miller

"...security, justice, and above all, truth."

There are no pictures in this book, only maps of slowly shrinking territory for the jews to claim and live on. I had a hard time reading this book in that I was so angry at what I was reading. The appendices in the back are documents that were signed and witnessed by world powers at various times of the twentieth century promising land and homes to the jews. These promises have hardly been kept. So, it took me a long time to read this book because I would fume and fret through every chapter. Finally, about two thirds through, Netanyahu writes that having read so far you would think that there were no chance for peace in the middle east, which was precisely what I was thinking. Of course, Netanyahu does believe it is possible, but the above conditions, stated in the title of the review, must be met.

This book is definitely a keeper, I have so many pages bookmarked. This book should be read by all those interested in a lasting peace in the middle east.

5 out of 5 stars Rebirth of Jewish Nation in Israel a Miracle! Let Zion Be!.......2006-07-07

Our Lord chose the Jews. God revealed Himself to them. It cannot be explained in pure logic. After not only reading in the Old Testament many attempts to destroy the Jewish nation, but not only recent recent histories of attempts to destroy the Jews, it ought to be clear:

Only the hard-hearted, hate-filled and cowardly will now stand silently by and not allow Israel the right to defend herself.

Israel is geographically and politically surrounded by bloodthirstily envious mobs who will never give up trying to destroy the Jews. Neither can that evil be explained with unaided human reason.

Biblical and secular history not only point to outsiders' hatred of the Jews but (very importantly) the struggle of Jews within the Jewish nations to keep the faith and keeping the covenant our Lord made with them.

With this latest wave of Islamo-nazism, Benjamin Netanyahu's great historical work will help arm you against the slick arguments of the evildoers.

3 out of 5 stars Israel's right wing and peace.......2006-02-04

This book reiterates the principles of Zionism without taking into consideration the consequent revision that this ideology has been exposed to ever since it saw light.
Benjamin Netayahu, a sworn right wing Israeli who believes power rather than peace is the guarantee for Israel's safety, writes that if there were an Israeli state during the first half of the 20th century, there would not have been a holocaust. But Netanyahu fails to explain why a Jewish community oppressed in Europe would force the creation of its state thousands of miles away in Palestine and literally "over the dead bodies" of its native Arab residents.
However, all such talk has become history and has become irrelevant after the Israelis and the Palestinians decided to live side-by-side in peace after a US-sponsored breakthrough compromise was announced in the early 1990s. Since then, negotiations over how to divide the land, water, passageway and sovereignty between the two peoples have proved to be very complicated.
In his capacity as a prime minister between 1996 and 1998, Netayahu had the chance to live these ever failing negotiations first hand. For this failure, he completely blames the Palestinians accusing them of hiding their true intentions for the destruction of the whole of Israel, of perceiving peace as merely a long-term truce and of propagating anti-Israeli hatred in their Arabic media.
Again, Netayahu - even if he announces his willingness to live in peace with the Palestinians - still sounds very one sided as he highlights the rhetoric of radical Palestinians while never talking about their Israeli counterparts. As a matter of fact, anti-peace Israeli terror reached a peak in 1994 when a fanatic killed peace-advocate Prime Minister and Netanyahu's predecessor Yitzhak Rabin.
Netayahu knows better that inasmuch as there are peace-loving Palestinians as well as anti-peace radicals on the Palestinian side, there are similar groupings on the Israeli side. Israeli force, in this case, would marginalize the moderate Palestinians and strengthen the radicals and peace will seem more impossible than ever. Force, from both sides, could never be the solution since as Ghandi said, "An eye for an eye would make the whole world go blind."

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book.......2004-12-26

This is a brilliant book about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Had people heeded the simple facts it reminds us all of, perhaps the disastrous "Oslo" agreements (and even more disastrous insistence on enforcing only the demands upon Israel, not upon the Arabs) might have been avoided.

The author of this book became the Prime Minister of Israel, and thus the book shows that no one can stand up to the counterproductive pressure that is being applied to Israel. That's bad news for all sides in this dispute unless those of us who wish to resolve the conflict decide to value truth.

Netanyahu starts by reminding us of Israel's size. That's a major point. Given the number of Jews, it is sobering to realize just how little sovereign land they have, and just how little value that land has. It tells us quickly that if one side is being greedy in this conflict, it sure isn't Israel. Netanyhau also reminds us that the land promised to the Jews as a national homeland (not necessarily a state, just land on which Jews would have permanent rights, including rights of immigration) was five times as parge as present-day Israel. Again, exactly which side is being greedy?

The author then traces the history of Zionism, refuting a well-known lie by Arafat that the Zionists stole a verdant land from its age-old native Arab inhabitants. And he then gives a history of the British Mandate, which ended with the British openly supporting Arab opponents of Jewish rights.

Now we get to the meat of the book, namely a refutation of some truly absurd and arbitrary lies that many readers will find tough to believe were ever seriously proposed. The first is "the theory of Palestinian centrality." This is a claim that if one solves the problem of the Levantine Arabs, one can achieve peace in the Middle East! Netanyahu establishes that many people really say this, and he refutes them.

The next Big Lie is a "reversal of causality." It states that the problems of Levantine Arabs are a cause of the Arab attacks on Israel, not a result of them. The author disposes of this lie as well. Once again, the hard part is showing just how seriously some folks repeat this lie.

Next, Netanyahu discusses the problem of the PLO, a terrorist group that claims to be the sole representative of Levantine Arabs. He quite properly calls it a "Trojan horse." And he shows that establishing it as a state in the region is a counterproductive and immoral idea.

The author then addresses the question of how peace can be achieved. He says that for there to be peace, the Arab side must become convinced that aggression will have negative consequences. If most Arabs become convinced of that, they may decide that Israel has a right to exist after all, and that human rights for Jews are not an affront and a casus belli. From here, he argues that Israel needs some strategic depth, otherwise the temptation for Arabs to try to overwhelm it will be irresistable.

Netanyahu then discusses "the demographic demon." He makes some good points here. I think many people use demographics as a preposterous argument that runs something like this: Israel has a vast Empire of nearly 10,000 square miles. Obviously, that is way too big for a mere 11 million Jews, only 5 million of whom live in Israel. Yes, if nature takes its course, the tiny group of Jews will be overwhelmed in numbers by real people, who will outvote them. The tiny group of Jewish oppressors will get what they deserve. They will lose their vast Empire. They ought to quit now, and give away all but a truly tiny amount of land, an amount they can afford!

Of course, both 5 million and 11 million are large numbers, especially when compared to the number of Arabs per square mile of Arab land. It is worth reading what Netanyahu has to say about the argument that Jews aren't numerous enough to have as big a nation as Israel!

Netanyahu concludes that "peace must be built on foundations of security, justice, and above all, truth." He's right. Truth has indeed, as he says, been the first casualty of the Arab war on Israel. He points out that the problem is not territorial but existential. And that the story is of a people seeking to establish its rightful place among the nations. I agree. If our society can't accept the existence of this nation, no nation is safe, and any of them could be the next target.

5 out of 5 stars Netanyahu at his best!.......2004-12-01

One cannot be near Benjamin Netanyahu without the feeling of being in the presence of greatness. There can be little doubt, that in the annals of history, the former Israeli Prime Minister will be remembered as one of the great leaders of our time.

In typical fashion, Netanyahu takes the reader to the point, quickly and decisively. The truth is meticulously outlined and even ardent detractors would be challenged to find one word of this fine work to be disputable and not based on fact. Is the book biased? Of course it is, but that doesn't mean it's not accurate to the letter.

Whether you are an avid follower of the problems in the Middle East, or if you can't even locate Israel on a map, but want to find out the truth about what is going on in Israel, this book is a must read. This may well be Mr. Netanyahu's best book yet.

      Book Description

In a mere fifty years, the United States transformed itself from a second-tier country crippled by its effort to abolish the appalling institution of human slavery into a great power unlike any the world had ever seen. The question of how it did this should command our attention all by itself, but the question of why it became such a peculiar—and incompetent—empire surely ranks as one of the great questions of modern history. For truly, measured by consequences, few global disasters can match the mismanagement of the international system in the 1920s, which owed almost entirely to bad decisions made in America. All that saves the United States from complete responsibility is the answer to the first question, of how this change happened so fast: America became a great power so swiftly, and became such a peculiar empire, because the rest of the world made it that way.

Globalization does not always level the world’s playing field. It produces winners, losers, and, on occasion, global economic disasters. As Eric Rauchway compellingly shows, no nation so clearly reflects the effects of globalization’s uneven influence than the United States. A historian’s answer to the rosier predictions of journalists, Blessed Among Nations is a sharply narrated reminder that we need merely to review the decades between the end of the Civil War and the aftermath of World War I—the first era of globalization—to realize that one nation’s enrichment need not benefit the whole world.

An incisive explanation of why America has inspired more envy than imitation, Blessed Among Nations warns that if we do not better understand how the United States failed, early on, to master the forces that made it what it is, we stand to make the same mistakes again, in a world with even higher stakes.

4 out of 5 stars A Place Among the Nations: Israel and the World.......1999-12-28

I thoroughly enjoyed Netanyahu's review of Israeli history. He started with God's promise to Abraham and ended with the Persian Gulf War. I appreciated a native Israeli's perspective and insight instead of biased Western press. I'd like everyone in the White House to read it, hopefully it would change some policies!

5 out of 5 stars A Place Among the Nations: Israel and the World.......1999-11-23

This is an excellent book. It presents both the Israeli side and the truthful side of the Arab-Israeli conflict. For those who doubts Netanyahu or thinks that he is lying, he provides some sources and footnotes that readers can compare and check for themselves. Required reading for those who want to know the truth about the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Kawari, which means "change" in Japanese, is a fitting (albeit understated) way to describe the far-reaching pecuniary and societal metamorphosis now underway in that country. Milton Ezrati, an international asset manager as well as an expert on Japan's finance, business, and politics, believes this extensive shift eventually will have wide-ranging effects around the globe. But unlike similarly dramatic upheavals in the 19th century and after World War II that stemmed largely from external threats to Japanese security, Ezrati contends, "this one will come from the more impersonal forces of her maturing economy, the globalization of economic and financial arrangements, and the rapid and relentless aging of her population." Japan will subsequently "gain stature on the world stage," he suggests, and "go from the nation that owned much but influenced little, to a nation that owns even more and influences a great deal."

In Kawari: How Japan's Economic and Cultural Transformation Will Alter the Balance of Power Among Nations, Ezrati fully examines this ongoing evolution from a Japanese perspective and explores the myriad ways that commercial affairs, government operations, and the population itself will likely be reshaped as the nation and surrounding region pull out of their current financial crisis. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

An insider's look at today's Japan, as history transforms it from an insular commercial giant into a nation among nations, with renewed military, diplomatic, and financial powers

At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is once again undergoing radical change, just as it did when it opened its doors to trade in the nineteenth century or rose from the ashes of World War II. Today's political, financial, and economic crises, however, reflect a confluence of trends that are proving that its current model for growth, a success for half a century, is unsustainable. In Kawari (which means "change" in Japanese), Milton Ezrati paints a rich, multi-dimensional, and provocative picture of Japan in transition. Analyzing economic, social, political, demographic, and cultural trends, Ezrati argues that Japan is poised to recover from its current crises, liberalize its trade policies, and evolve into a major diplomatic and military power-but not without profound consequences for its people and for the world at large.

      5 out of 5 stars Ezrati's a "rattling read".......2000-09-15

Ezrati's first book was a surprise to me, but after reading it, I found that I was intrigued about a subject I never gave much thought to; Japanese socioeconomic status. This is now my current field of fascination, and I must say that "Kawari" is one of the more enlightening books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars An Essay in Modern Political Economy.......2000-06-15

A sea change in demographics not seen since the end of the Second World War looms over the industrialised world. Every member of the OECD expects the ratio of workers to dependents to fall over the next fifty years, but none anticipates a disaster like Japan's: within a generation, Japan will fall from seven wage-earners per dependent to less than two. Needless to say, this kind of change cannot hope but have profound implications for Japan's culture, national politics, macro- and micro-economic climate, trade and military ties abroad, and her social democracy in general. We can anticipate a revolution in Japanese society and role in the world not seen since 1945.

This is the theme of Mr. Ezrati's book, and an ambitious theme it is. Most authors would not be able to cover such a vast and profound topic without lapsing into either hyperbole or tedium, yet Mr. Ezrati manages to lead the reader through his argument with grace, aplomb, and style. He interposes hard facts and rigourous analysis with illuminating and entertaining anecdotes to offer a work that will prove useful to novices and experts alike. Ezrati never loses sight of his thesis and, though the sheer volume of knowledge that he brings to the discussion may seem dizzying, carefully guides the reader through his subtle logic to the startling conclusion. Well on its way to becoming required reading at my institution for all politics and economics students and faculty, Ezrati's Kawari is highly recommended for businessmen, academics, students, and amateurs with an interest, not only in Japan, but in the shape of geopolitics in the coming century.

      4 out of 5 stars Metamorphosis.......1999-11-23

Faced with economic difficulties and a rapidly growing retired population, Japan will have to undergo fundamental change, metamorphosis, in the near future. In a clear and practical writing style the author guides through the recent troubles of the Japanse system of a state-coordinated economy and the challenges imposed by demographic changes. In order to prevent decline, Japan must transform from a center of manufacturing to a "headquarter nation" helping to organise the deleloping Asian economies. This requires the rather isolationist country to reestablish its diplomatic and military presence in global politics. Brilliantly sharp analysis combined with real life anecdotes make this book a pleasure to read. It conveys an intuitive understanding of the Japanese way and its powerful implications for Asia and beyond. A must for anyone interested in global trends of economic and political power.

        Book Description

This is a collection of essays that starts with the premise that the United States inhabits a world it understands far too little and is insufficiently prepared to lead. The author, James W. Skillen, argues that world religions and cultural patterns are forces onto themselves and do not and will not change or adapt at American bidding. In short, this post-cold war era calls for a self-critical reexamination of nationalism, state sovereignty, and the demands of international justice. Published in cooperation with The Center for Public Justice.

1 out of 5 stars If not the U.S., than Who?.......2006-11-09

The premise of Mr. Skillen's book is the U.S. is not up to the job of world leadership is a deeply flawed one. If not the US, then who? China? Cuba? Russia? France? The U.N.? Which one of those countries has selflessly done everything close to an American Relief Administration or a Marshall Plan?

The U.S. with all its warts, is one the few countries that will at least "TRY" do right thing for the right reasons. When China gobbles up Taiwan or the Islamo-Fascists finally pushes Israel into the sea or some Tin-Pot Dictator conducts ethnic cleansing, who is the world going turn to, the U.N.?

The reason why the U.S. is "The Superpower" is that without America protecting the world from Fascism and Communism, the world would look like North Korea. A world not worth living in.

          Book Description

The Human Development Report 2003 discusses the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)--the targets set for reductions in poverty, improvements in health and education, and protection of the environment around the world by the year 2015. In September 2000, world leaders pledged to achieve the MDGs, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. This report examines the progress made towards reaching these goals on a country-by-country basis. The Human Development Report 2003 also features a wide variety of national development indicators for 174 countries including demographic trends, educational levels, gender disparities, and macroeconomic indicators. It is an important tool in the formulation of government policy.
