5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-12-13

Toseland's book is considered by most experts in the field to be one of the best resources for understanding group work today. I have enjoyed this text and consider it an important addition to any Social Work library. After having Dr. Toseland as a professor is it clear that he is truely a master of group work. This book is worth every penny!!

1 out of 5 stars Dumbing Down social work.......2006-10-22

This book has no breadth nor depth. My students hate it and I dislike it myself. I stopped using it halfway through the term - I have never done that before with a text. This text could be effectively condensed to a fourth of its current size. Unfortunately many of the books in this genre I have reviewed for groups, an important topic for new human service and social work students, are the same. The chapter on the history of group work is pretty good, but the rest of the book is tedious.

3 out of 5 stars chore to read.......2006-10-19

This is the most popular goup work text; however, not a student in my class likes this book. The information is all there and well organized but it is a chore to read it. The writing style is dense, dry, and laborious.

4 out of 5 stars Group work Practice.......2003-10-22

The book has been written in simply language for the social work student/ practioner, however, anyone working with groups will find some useful information.

The book has been updated over the years to include new info. on areas such as cultural diverse issues affecting group work in the US. This I believe is applicable not only to the US but to other area such as the Caribbean which share diverse cultures.

It also gives a detail listing of possible source material on adolescence and the Elderly.

      Book Description

Understand the role the profession plays in the social welfare system with SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE. This text takes a generalist practice perspective in addressing social welfare issues within the context of the systems/ecological framework and the overarching framework used by generalist practitioners as they intervene to address social welfare needs at the individual, family, group, organization, community, and societal levels. You'll consider the many reasons why social problems occur and will think critically about issues in a new way, drawing on the book's coverage of history, values, and the economic, political, and cultural factors that affect social work and social welfare. You'll also develop a broad understanding of the profession of social work itself, through the book's extensive coverage of the social work profession, a brief history of its origin, a discussion of various theoretical principles, and applications of these principles to common social problems.

Crowded into the beautiful, narrow strip at the edge of the ocean, the large number of people who live near California's dynamic coastline often have little awareness of the hazards--waves, tides, wind, storms, rain, and runoff--that erode and impact the coast and claim property on a regular basis. This up-to-date, authoritative, and easy-to-use book, a geological profile of the California coast from Mexico to the Oregon border, describes the landforms and processes that shape the coastline and beaches, documents how erosion has affected development, and discusses the options that are available for dealing with coastal hazards and geologic instability.
A completely revised and updated edition of Living with the California Coast (1985), this book features hundreds of new photographs and the latest data on human activity on the coast, on climate change, on rising seas levels, and on coastal erosion and protection. With its dramatic photographs and mile-by-mile maps, Living with the Changing California Coast will be an essential resource for those intending to buy or build along the coast, those who need specific information about various coastal regions, and those who are seeking information about how this remarkable coastline has evolved.

279 photographs portray natural coastal features and processes and illustrate many instances of what can happen to buildings on the coast
81 maps, covering the entire coast, detail types of coastal landforms, coastline erosion rates, locations of seawalls or armor, and other specific areas of interest
Offers specific advice for homebuyers, residents, and developers on which areas to avoid, on what safety measures should be taken, and on what danger signals should be heeded

Living with the Changing California Coast was an interesting book to read, and I'm keeping it as a reference book. It provides explanation for some of the bad surprises that occur with coastal development.
