Book Description
ith the words 'this Crusade, this war on terror,' George W. Bush defined the purpose of his presidency. And just as promptly, James Carroll-Boston Globe columnist, bestselling author, and respected moral authority-began a week-by-week argument with the administration. In powerful, passionate bulletins, Carroll dissected the President's exploitation of the nation's fears, invocations of a Christian mission, and efforts to overturn America's traditional relations-with other nations and its own citizens. Combining clear moral consciousness, an acute sense of history, and a real-world grasp of the unforgiving demands of politics, Crusade is a compelling call for the rescue of America's noblest traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Voice of the Village Idiot.......2007-03-16
This book, written by ex-Catholic priest James Carroll, contains his musings from the pages of the Boston Globe -- the very same newspaper that shot to prominence with its Know Nothing position back in the 18th century.
It presents a decidedly biased view of U.S. involvement in Iraq as well as the Catholic Church.
Scholarly works by more objective and qualified sources are available. For those anxious to confirm their own biased views, however, Mr. Carroll is the perfect town crier.
Discoveries.......2006-08-27
Crusade
Seeing James Carroll on C-Span 2, Book TV, talking about his newest book, House of War, gave me a clue that I was missing an important American writer. I found a paper copy of one of his earlier books, Crusade, available locally.
Crusade is a collection of the articles Carroll had written for the Boston Globe after 9/11. It begins with Carroll's first article after 9/11. In it Carroll provides the information that an educated person used to have: the Christian Crusades of the late Middle Ages were waged to claim the Middle East for Christianity. The viciousness of the Crusaders exhibited to Moslems the Christian capacity for cruel, bloody slaughter. The President's use of the term "crusade" to initiate retaliation for 9/11 was more than unfortunate.
By the time I finished the article I wanted a hard cover copy to preserve. (I'll probably scribble in the margins of the paper copy.) To anyone who questions Carroll's knowledge of the history of the problems of the Middle East his earlier work. Constantine's sword is a ready answer.
Unjust War.......2005-07-28
This is a series of essays commenting on President Bush and his determination to go to war in Iraq. Carroll starts in 2001 just after 9/11 and records the sequence of events that led to the invasion of Iraq. Told by an obviously moral man who exposes the immorality and blind determination of an administration that used lies, half-truths, and P.R. to justify this dreadful mistake. Carroll knows that going to war is such an extreme step that it requires the most rigorous thought and moral examination. We deserve that.
The Dangers of Empire Exposed .......2005-07-05
James Carroll is a veteran columnist with the Boston Globe. He specializes in foreign affairs with a particular focus on issues relating to war and peace. His insightful volume "Crusade: Chronicles of an Unjust War" takes the reader from the tragedy of 9/11 to the launching of the Iraq War as well as shrewdly monitoring its continuing impact.
Carroll realizes immediately that a calamitous result will occur from shifting the focus away from al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden following 9/11 to Iraq and the objective of toppling Saddam Hussein. He sees problems occurring from a reaction totally out of concert with international law as well as reason. Carroll, who has studied international religions closely, cites a major error on the part of the Bush Administration as occurring from his statement that its anti-terrorist initiative was part of a great crusade. Carroll notes that the word crusade sends a chill throughout the Muslim world. It stems from the bloody crusades in which so many Muslims were killed by Christians, culminating in slaughter of all of Arab occupants of Jerusalem.
At a time when a major international problem exists in Israel pitting Israelis and Palestinians that is marked by conflicts over settlement construction and occupation as well as suicide bombers, Carroll observes that the emphasis has been shifted away from this trouble spot, along with others such as North Korea and Iran, as American forces occupy Iraq. He notes that this precipitous move plays into the hands of international terrorists by giving Osama bin Laden and others like him a rallying cry. Muslims are warned that by occupying Iraq the Bush Administration is establishing designs on the entire Arab world.
Carroll recognizes that there is a fundamental problem with George W. Bush. "When the president speaks, unscripted, from his own moral center," Carroll writes, "what shows itself is a bottomless void. To address concerns about the savage violence engulfing `postwar' Iraq with a cocksure `Bring `em on!' (as he did last week) is to display an absence of imagination shocking in a man of such authority. It showed a lack of capacity to identify either with enraged Iraqis who must rise to such a taunt, or with young GIs who must now answer for it. Even in relationships to his own soldiers, there is nothing at the core of this man but visceral meanness." He goes on to describe Bush as a "selfless president," which he sees "not a compliment" but "a warning."
One area where Carroll sharply criticizes the Bush Administration is in the misuse of intelligence. Rather than seeking answers by following the facts wherever they may lead and formulating policy based on those hardheaded, realistic conclusions, he sees the Bush Administration as tailoring circumstances to fit its own desires. Under such circumstances policies are motivated by propaganda rather than intelligence assessments. The classic illustration was the rush to war to protect Americans from a perceived attack in which Saddam Hussein would release "weapons of mass destruction" that never existed. A UN inspection team's work was precluded in the rush to war.
As a perceptive student of history, Carroll decries lost diplomatic opportunities that were lost at the conclusion of World War Two. Rather than take the lead in seeking to put an end to the creation of nuclear weapons, the U.S. and Soviet Union instead entered into a protracted Cold War. This brought the world to the precipice of destruction through a nuclear exchange. A balance of terror was substituted for creative diplomacy and an objective of world disarmament.
With the ability of terrorists to make small nuclear weapons that can be carried in a suitcase, and the corresponding capability of unleashing widespread destruction, Carroll sees the futility of the Bush Administration pursuing Star Wars technology. The strategy of the Bush Administration to abrogate international treaties pertaining to arms control and polluting the atmosphere is viewed in the context of the potential disaster that could result for the entire planet from such selfish policies. At a time when well-reasoned diplomacy is essential a lone cowboy "bring `em on" foolhardy policy with potential cataclysmic results has instead been invoked as primitive emotion supplants reason.
Brings together 4 years of political criticism in one book.......2005-01-09
Carroll analysis draws many persuasive conclusions without enumerating detailed reasons for his conclusions and this makes his political criticism seem sage like. Carroll criticizes the war on Iraq as unjust (preventive rather than defensive), Bush's crusade rhetoric (sacred violence: purge and purification of the infidel), domestic and foreign policy changes (safety concerns against constitutional guarantees), firearms increases a product of slavery and racial inequality, war ideology (noncombat deaths and suffering of the innocent), fear in America - (guilt reflections), nuclear weapons threat in North Korea (Bushing rhetoric causing the nuclear threat), Catholic involvement in foreign policy (Iran contra money channeling, Catholics against communism), moral loss in Catholic priesthood (apathy against child abuse), human suffering and a human chain view of casual events (the cost of the war), Israel and Palestine racial hatred and division (Palestinians driven into poverty and Israelis living with Terrorism), Ariel Sharon cruel government (the impenetrable wall), the axis of evil (selflessness), the illusion of safety through military dominance (are we safer? who are we convincing), the resurrection of Osama (Do you feel safer today), decapitation of hostages (reversal crusade message), Russia not longer a military superpower (why nuclear proliferation after the cold war), Jesus as hero of Bush (Messiah complex), complex battle between good and evil, the erosion of civil rights (unrest among ethic groups, profiling tests), weapons of mass destruction as reason to rid Sadaam Hussein of power (justification without proof), abandonment of ABM and Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (public censorship to prevent annihilation), reversal of a world wide rejection of nuclear weapons (the rationale approach), the reemergence of starwars (salvation through technology), forgetfulness is tyranny (where is the political memory?), U.S policy leading to Afghanistan (Soviet aggression a real threat to military dominance).

Thoughtful, involving portrait of a self-made man's legacy........2007-05-12
Written by historian Lawrence M. Woods, Alex Swan and the Swan Companies is a fascinating, in-depth biography of 1800's corporate tycoon Alex Swan, and the robust enterprises he founded, particularly the Swan Land and Cattle Company, one of the larger livestock companies to operate in the American West. Chapters don't just detail Swan's life; over half of Alex Swan and the Swan Companies is devoted to the stories of his former businesses long after he was no longer running them. Appendices of financial information, a bibliography, and an index round out this thoughtful, involving portrait of a self-made man's legacy.

Book Description
For nineteen-year-old Harriet Morton, life in 1912 Cambridge is as dry and dull as a biscuit. Her stuffy father and her opressive aunt Louisa allow her only one outlet: ballet. When a Russian ballet master comes to class searching for dancers to fill the corps of his ballet company before their South American tour, HarrietÂ's world changes. Defying her fatherÂ's wishes and narrowly escaping the clutches of the man who wishes to marry her, Harriet sneaks off to join the ballet on their journey to the Amazon. There, in the wild, lush jungle, they perform Swan Lake in grand opera houses for the wealthy and culture-deprived rubber barons, and Harriet meets Rom Verney, the handsome and mysterious British exile who owns the most ornate opera house. Utterly enchanted by both the exotic surroundings and by RomÂ's affections, Harriet is swept away by her new life, completely unaware that her father and would-be finacé have begun to track her down. . . .

A Favorite.......2001-02-26
This book is one of my favorites. I picked it up not knowing the author at all and became lost in a touching romance. I now try to find her books wherever I can. This is usually in libraries, because most of her adult books at out of print.
Why Do The Best Books Go Out Of Print (OOP)?.......2000-11-18
This book is not hard to find used or at a public library. Otherwise, I would hate to get anyone's hopes up. There is nothing worse than saying, "I just read a fabulous book and you will never be able to find it yourself." This novel is set in Europe and South America in the early 20th century before WWI, a time period I would like to see used more frequently. The heroine, Harriet, meets a little boy at an English estate who tells her she must somehow travel to South America and find his lost uncle to redeem his faltering estate. Harriet enters a touring ballet company of "Swan Lake" as a dancer in the corps by running away from the stifling home of her father-professor in Cambridge, England. The troupe travels to South America to perform and there she meets the hero, Rom, the lost uncle. There are some amazing coincidences in this book that you might not accept in a lesser work. There are also some big misunderstandings between Harriet and Rom. However, this novel is so well written by its Viennese author that those plot devices cause no annoyance whatsoever. The author's writing style is quite distinct from an American's or a UK writer's style which I found a refreshing change since those two writing groups tend to dominate the market. There are also many humorous moments and characters that will have you LOL as you read. The prima ballerina and the insect professor, to name two, are absolutely hilarious. I am now trying to find this author's other novels, all of which seem to be out of print and I can only hope that I beat you other auction aficionados to the punch! Thanks to EP and LLF for recommending this over on an online message board. You couldn't have been more right about this novel.
Enchanting.......2000-10-01
In 1912, Cambridge, Harriet Morton lives in an oppresive household with her dry, clutch-fist aunt and narrow-minded father. Like Anna (of A Countess Below Stairs by the same author), Harriet possesses the pure, luminescent quality that Ibbotson seems to favor in her leading females. Harriet's main joy in her life is her dancing lesson; she is offered a chance to become part of a troupe going to the Amazons. She meets at a neglected Yorkshire mansion an endearing, odd little boy named Henry that begs her to find The Boy; Henry is sure that The Boy is in the Amazons and that he will save the ruined household. Struck with this serendipitious sign, Harriet takes the chance to follow her dream to the far-away land. We meet the bumbling, insensitive suitor, and the tempermental, aging ballerina; we meet Harriet's roommate and friend, Marie-Claude, a beauty who wants to open an inn by the mountains. Sometimes, the secondary characters can "break-or-make" a story; in this case, they perform their roles to perfection.
Like all good books, the plot seems fairly simple until you explain it. I can't go into detail of who The Boy is (surely you must have guessed anyway!) but I will leave in mystery WHO he has become and WHY he is where he is. It wouldn't be fair to compare this book to A Countess Below Stairs, which is what I incline to do. This one is longer, and sometimes does drag on; the agonizing love of Anna and Rupert is not repeated because A Company of Swans is lighter, and more suited to convention (which you will recognize if you've been a long-time romance reader). There is a villain, but unlike the bloodthirstiness in "modern" historicals (is that an oxymoron?) she does not receive her comeuppance as one is used to. But the threads of the story weave together to form an effortless plot and a sweet, charming tale. Rather Dickens-ish in its range of "coincidences" that bring Harriet, the heroine, and Rom Verney, the hero, together, A Company of Swans is nonetheless beautifully written and an engaging read.
Not her best.......2000-06-29
I love Eva Ibbotson's books, so I was delighted to find this in the library. However, despite the fact that it is as beautifully written as ever, the story didn't hold my attention as long as others, and I didn't like the way Harriet totally dropped ballet at the end, after working so hard to be a dancer.
A Well Thought Out and Beautifully Written Love Story.......2000-04-11
Rummaging through a book sale I stumbled across this book. Never could I have foreseen the grip this wonderful story would hold me in until I turned the final page. It's the type of story that one hates to finish because now there is nothing even remotely interesting to read. Poor Harriet, a young woman with no hope in her desolate future except to become the wife of a droll man who is obsessed with bugs. A family so disinterested in her that she might as well not exist. And then her whole life changes in an instant and suddenly a world not even her imagination could produce is opened up to her, as well as the charms of Rom Verney. As I read this story I was caught in the twists and turns of each delectable moment, hoping that all would turn out right when Harriet's existance is hung in the balance of love and learning to let love go. A must read for the person who craves gentle and sincere romance. I can't wait to find other books by this talented author!

Book Description
The Worshipful company of Musicians, the only City Livery Company dedicated to the Performing Arts, celebrates its 500th anniversary in 2000. A new history by Richard Crewdson (Clerk to the Company 1967-87) marks the occasion by charting the eventful and often troubled life of the Company since 1500, and the earlier years when the London minstrels attempted to organise themselves into a guild. In the book the company's development is illustrated through the lives of individuals who were connected with it in one way or another - wealthy Jacobean musicians like Henry Walker who sold Shakespeare his Blackfriars house; Nicholas Lanier, first Master of the King's Music, determined to destroy the Company; Francis Pendleton, Elizabeth Pepys' dancing master; Tom Britton, the `small-coal man' and pioneer concert promoter, and many others. The company's fortunes ebbed and flowed. Even when it settled down as a 18th-century Dining Club it had to cope with an embezzling Clerk, and its first Alderman proved to be a fraudster and bankrupt. Surviving fitfully through the 19th century it enjoyed a great revival in the 1880s which took it triumphantly into the 20th century in its new role as patron of musicians. The main theme of this eminently readable book is presented against a background of national and local history and of London music, making it of special interest to a wide range of readers.RICHARD CREWDSON was Master of the Musicians Company, 1987-1988; he is now Senior Pastmaster.

A small pile of white feathers lies at my feet on a tussock of grass made grey by a Highland winter. It is all the monument that will ever be to the life of a swan.--from The Company of Swans
With The Company of Swans, Jim Crumley has ensured that there will be a more enduring monument to the life of this swan, and of all swans, than the pile of white feathers. Crumley watches, year in and year out, as a pair of mute swans struggle, against the odds, to raise their young on a wild patch of loch. But the pen starts to lose her eggs to predators and the cob begins to disappear for longer and longer periods. One day a third swan, younger and stronger than the first pen, appears at the other end of the loch.
This beautiful record, on fine paper, is Crumley's homage to these noble creatures, but it is also an elegy, a love song to one swan whose silent tragedy he watched from one season to the next.
Customer Reviews:
Swans.......2000-09-07
Crumley's story of the three swans in Scotland will appeal to those with an interest in animals or Scotland. It is a thoughtful and moving story which really isn't about birds or Scotland, although I learned details about swans and Scotland I never knew. It is a short book and takes about 30 minutes to read but you will remember it as long as any book with a 1000 pages. A good gift for a friend or yourself.

Book Description
The story of a prima ballerina and her acolyte, set in Puerto Rico in 1917.
Flight of the Swan is the compelling story of a world-famous Russian prima ballerina who finds herself stranded on a Caribbean island in 1917, due to political upheavals in her own country. This charming jeu d'esprit explores the complexities of love and betrayal, as the loyal servant Masha gradually comes to recognize that in spite of what she sees as Madame's propensity to be both pretentious and vain, the ballerina is prepared to sacrifice everything for her art. Madame's unfaltering commitment to dance above all else -- and her demand of nothing less from her disciples -- forces Masha to question what choices she herself is willing to make when it comes to her own loves, ideals, and relationships.
Humorous, engaging, and coyly revealing, Flight of the Swan traces the decisions made by Masha, Madame, and other members of the troupe during their enforced three-month stay in Puerto Rico, and in doing so raises the question of where true happiness lies.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Book.......2002-01-07
This is the first book of Ferre's that I read and I found it just fine. I agree with Publisher's Weekly that the introduction of a new voice near the end was jarring. But as someone not familiar with Puerto Rico of the early 20the Century I thought it was interesting, and the descriptions of the ballet company were engrossing. Great literature? No. A good read about two subjects exotic to most readers -- old Puerto Rico and ballet? Yes. I think it would make a great movie.
What we don't see counts........2001-12-13
It may have clean verbage and a winning premise, but the story misses at every turn. The book attempts to cover Puerto Rican weather, politics, the social climate, and the main focus: a Russian ballerina and her dance troupe. But the novel fails to cover anything well. The book never fleshes out the characters. Every scene which might engage the reader and become exciting happens off stage so that we're left with a narrator's lackluster reference to it. We don't even really see the ballerinas warm-up, let alone feel their joy in dancing. I'm not sure what the writer's goal was since there's very little tension, and the story fails to have a clear plot.
Historical fiction at its best.......2001-09-18
I loved this book... I started reading it in the cobblestoned streets of Old San Juan, on my way to snack on a famous buttered "mallorca" accompanied by cafe con leche from La Bombonera bakery. Before I knew it, I was enthralled in the story. I found myself walking the same streets as the characters, sitting in San Juan's main plazas while I read about the characters strolling at night in the same streets.... This book does a fantastic job of combining Puerto Rican culture and its political turmoil at the turn of the 19th century with the struggles of Russia during their revolution. The main characters are russian and they slowly become "latinized"-- more universal symbols of political struggle, characters that are displaced from their homeland to face the struggle of a new culture, language, and political struggle. This is Rosario Ferre's best book.
Swans in Puerto Rico?.......2001-08-01
I am a big fan of Rosario Ferre. Her stories make me connect with that long lost Puerto Rico. However, I wonder---- why write a ballerina's story in 1917 Puerto Rico? Although it is still worth reading, definetely not one of her bests!!!!!!!!!!.
Flying short: Ferré's new novel cannot leave the ground.......2001-06-21
Rosario Ferré is one of my favorite writers. When I was a teenager, I went to a book store in San Juan and saw the Mexican edition of "Papeles de Pandora". I liked her picture very much. She looked smart and free. At that age that was reason enough, for me, to buy her book. I loved it. It was something very diferent from the books about colonialism, sugar cane and how much we Puerto Rican suffer because we are good people, that we read at school. She was something different. A new voice. Over the years I kept reading her, buying her books as soon as I saw them at the bookstores. I liked most of them, very much.
When I read in an interview that she was planing to publish a book about a Russian ballerina stock in San Juan, I said "great"
I just read the book. Not very interesting. The same old story, told in the same old way. The ballerina falling in love with the independentista in a back ground of political inestability. Worst than that, the characters lack resonance and the whole thing sounds like a B-class movie about revolution and love in the Caribbean. Too bad. I still think she can do better. Let us wait for her next proyect.

Book Description
This book provides a historical perspective and broader understanding of how the laws of business regulation came about, what they are intended to acccomplish, and how they affect the commercial and social structure of the modern world. There is a tendency, in contemporary markets, to conduct business only in terms of what can be observed now. It is often assumed that the sophisticated business methods in use in the fast moving contemporary markets are new inventions, created to meet the rapidly evolving needs of modern financial services. All the possibilities for their use and all of the objects they can accomplish are thought to be on display before us now.
The difficulty with this view is that it is wrong, and fosters an ignorance that constricts business grrowth and market expansion. This book contains the first real history of how the worlds largest market, the market for futures and derivatives, arose, how it has been used, and how it has been regulated. A! lso given is an excellent account of the development of banking and insurance regulation, the problems those industries have faced in the past, difficulties confronting them now, and their prospects for the future. One section shows how banking and insurance regulations supposedly created to protect the poor forced the poor to subsidise the investment of the rich. Finally, the book shows how the drafting of business regulations has been subject to the influence of solicitors.
