Book Description
In September 1965, then navy commander James B. Stockdale was shot down while flying a mission over North Vietnam. He was to spend the next seven and a half years in a Hanoi prison, four of them in solitary confinement. As a senior officer among the prisoners, he was responsible for defining rules of conduct and maintaining morale. It was a task that, despite torture, intimidation, and isolation, he fulfilled with intelligence and courage. For a specific act of risking his life to protect his fellow prisoners, Admiral Stockdale was award the congressional Medal of Honor. Admiral Stockdale survived because of his character and his values. Both were honed and strengthened during his imprisonment, and their refinement under adversity represents a personal victory for him. His reflections on this experience and the reasons for his survival form the basis of the essays reprinted here. Ranging in subject from methods of communication in prison to military ethics to the principles of leadership, the thirty-four selections contained in this volume are a unique record of what their author calls a "melting experience," a pressure-packed existence that forces one to grow.
Customer Reviews:
The inner way of a warrior.......2007-04-27
These are the reflections of a well-educated leader for any age, yet an experienced Navy pilot in his post-captive years as a POW during the Vietnam War.Jim Stockdale makes clear throughout this book the differences between enlightened leadership and the business ethos permeating the Pentagon after Eisenhower. He even reveals early censorship and manipulation of "facts" by TV and print media decades ago. Throughout this philosophical lecture-filled book, this decorated Vice Admiral sprinkles historical naval decisions to underline his points. This is recommended for those who believe in the careful study of history and the wisdom of those who pass them down.
Important book that deserves a very wide reading.......2005-09-22
I read Vice Admiral Stockdale's obituary and became interested in his writing, given what I learned about him in the outline of his career. It was truly tragic that his moment in the national spotlight made him seem a confused old man, as anyone reading any of his writing will quickly discern.
This book could well serve as a 150 page handbook on the true meaning of manhood and ways of attaining it. Stockdale had a classical education and put it to excellent use during a long public career and an unbelievably difficult eight year period as a prisoner of war. He has important things to say about character and courage and leadership and adversity and history. The breadth of sources from which he draws his observations is breathtaking.
A remarkable book by a remarkable man.......2005-07-19
It is an honor to review this book. Vice admiral Stockdale reflects on his personal experience as senior officer in a POW camp in Vietnam during 8 years. This is one of the most remarkable example of human fortitude I have ever heard of told by a man of supreme intelligence and culture.

From preening to biting to molting this book helps bird owners better understand and care for their cockatiel.
Customer Reviews:
Finally I understand!.......2007-08-04
I've had cockatiels for years and just accepted their behavior as eccentric (which it is). Finally someone has shown me in a humorous way why they do some of those incomprehensable things. Cockatiels are still a little weird, but now I understand them a lot better.
Just fun ... not a lot of information..........2007-03-19
I think this is a book and certainly a good gift for someone you know who has cockatiels as me.
Buy it for the humour !.......2007-03-14
If you are an already experienced bird owner, you probably won't learn much you don't already know, but you will certainly get a good laugh out of it!
The illustrations are great and even though you can get through the entire book in about 10 minutes, I thought it was worth the low price.
It would also be a great book if you have cockatiels and want to help young children who are just learning to read to understand the birds better!
Curious about your cockatiel?.......2006-11-06
If you are a recent cockatiel buyer or just want to know why your cockatiel does some curious things, this is a good book for you. I found it very helpful explaining some of the things my cockatiel does.
A nice little book.......2006-04-22
I bought this book based on Amazon reviews just like this one.
As a very knowledgable bird person who has had birds since childhood, first budgie parakeets and then cockatiels, I was very interested in this book as it seemed to be one of use for even the experienced cockatiel person.
While there are a few things I didn't know before I bought it and while the book is well written and done with great humor, I found it wasn't quite as good as I expected it to be. I expected it to include a lot more of things I didn't know instead of simply telling what I do know in a fun way.
For the more casual cockatiel companion, I think this is a nice book and certainly a great gag gift for someone you know who has cockatiels. But for someone who invests heavily into her birds, it is maybe a little too elementary. Most people who invest in their cockatiels like dog people do for their dogs will probably know almost all of it like I did.
This is a book more for entertainment than education. If you want to be educated on cockatiels, try the serious parrot training books. Those are much more helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Quick entertaining read, excellent for children........2006-07-14
Book provides some useful information in an entertaining, humorous format. Very good for children, and adults with only a minor interest in the behavior of parakeets. Not an in-depth guide, but a lot of interesting information packed into a 15-30 minute read. Highly recommended.
Not even worth half a star.......2006-04-12
This book is a total waste of time and money. It tells you nothing more and considerably less than a $2.00 pamphlet like book from any variety store. The author seems to think they are very cute and clever. They are wrong! Don't waste your money on this thing.
Fun and cute book!.......2005-12-27
This book has adorable and hilarious illustrations. While the info is true, I would recommend this for beginning budgie owners only. The book was a little smaller than I expected, but all in all, it's a fun book that can help answer questions you may have had for a long time. Happy Reading! :-)
All the answers in half the time.......2004-05-10
If you've ever had a bird, you know they can be, well, odd birds! I was in the pet store the other day and saw this book. Got it on a whim because we have two Parakeets. My wife and I sat on our couch with it and went "bird watching" for a while. The book is so right on. Now if I could just get a book called Why Does Your Wife Do That?
Very Cute Book!.......2004-05-10
This book is very cute and well written. There's just enough info here, but it doesn't try to tell you every single thing about parakeets, though if you love parakeets you'll get a kick out of the illustrations. I have another parakeet book by this author and that one has more info in it. Anyway, I really liked this book!

Book Description
The teens in this book are not fictitious characters. Their stories are not made up. They have experienced the full range of disappointments, heataches, and personal failures that life can throw one's way. The good news is that all 39 teens in this book met Someone who changed their lives forever. That Someone is the God who loved them enough to die for them - who will never leave nor forsake them. As you read these stories of pain and triumph, open your heart to the same life-changing God they met.
Customer Reviews:
Not afraid to talk about the tough stuff.......2005-10-13
A lot of Christian books for teens stay away from the real issues. This book doesn't and it's encouraging to know that God can change a life like this. Loved the quotes from teens, the stories, and especially the poetry written by teens. Very cool book.
Real Teens, Real Stories, Real life.......2004-11-30
I thought that these stories were not open to everyone because anyone who does not believe in God could not relate at all to these stories. I thought they featured strong people, but again was not open to all readers because of the focus on God. I questioned the validity of some of the stories because they seemed somewhat exaggerated although maybe it just had to do with the people's expieriences and how they felt at the time.
Honest, awesome, written just for teens - I loved it!.......2003-05-04
This book kept my interest from the first word to the last. It was honest and real and didn't talk down or preach about issues that matter to teens. It was open and honest and identified with the things that teens face, but showed God to be powerful and merciful. Perfect gift for a teen from a parent, grandparent or anyone who knows a teen who needs to know that God is not afraid of the tough stuff. In fact, he's HUGE in our lives and can walk with us through whatever we face and not only bring us out on the other side, but change our lives forever. He's awesome. This book is awesome.
Real Teens, Real Stories, Real Life.......2003-04-06
The format of the book "Real Teens, Real Stories, Real Life" by T. Suzanne Eller, lends itself to easy reading. Each chapter is a touching real life experience by young folks in their early teens to mid twenties. The stories tell of their personal downward spiral into the pit of lying, stealing, physical abuse, drugs, porn, occult, sex, pregnancy, homosexuality, and some of them jail. Their life and death stories are made even more significant by the fact that hundreds of our nation's teens are moving in the same direction. Intervention is needed.
This book is one of hope, of overcoming, of climbing out of the pit. Each of the teens tell their story because they did find help, they did find a way to "do a 180°". These teens were from different states across our nation and yet the common thread to the answer is through God.
T. Suzanne Eller is a cancer survivor who has written a book that will help other teens, parents of teens and those who work with teens. I'm a grandmother of teens and heartily recommend the book.

Real Teens, Real Stories, Real Life.......2003-02-28
I will never forget the night that I wanted to die.
I didn't want to tell anyone. I didn't want to tell anyone about the tears that I had cried when they weren't looking. I didn't want to tell anyone that I didn't have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. I wasn't going to tell anyone.
But I needed to tell someone. And I needed to hear someone say, "I know what it's like to be depressed." But no one was saying it. And I wasn't telling.
I was tied up in my own fear that someone would think that I was crazy. And I couldn't afford to be different from those around me - God knows that I didn't want to be any more of a misfit than I already was.
What I didn't know was that there were thousands of teens experiencing similar thoughts, and they too felt that they had had nowhere to turn. They too, were suffering in a dangerous silence.
One of those silent teenagers was a young boy named Darrin. Darrin was so addicted to pornography that he tried to take his own life. He had no hope.
Around the same time in another area of the US, Jennifer Harmon was learning to live again. After a serious diving accident, Jennifer was left dependant and paralyzed from the neck down. Jennifer had nowhere to turn.
I've never met Darrin, or Jennifer. But their stories of hope and life have inspired me to live life to the fullest.
I've never heard Darrin say, "I know how it feels to be depressed," and I've never put my arm around Jennifer and laughed with her so hard that my stomach hurt. But it doesn't matter - because these teens are just like me, with stories just like mine.
They're Real Teens, with Real Stories, in Real Life. They're just like you and they're just like me - they're not afraid of the word, "suicide", they're not afraid to talk about the pain they feel, and they're not afraid to share their honest feelings about love, life, and God.
Their stories are presented in a book that was published this month by T. Suzanne Eller, entitled, Real Teens, Real Stories, Real Life.*
The publisher, Suzanne Eller, remembers what it was like to suffer extreme emotional pain as a teenager. Coming from a difficult home situation, Suzanne questioned the love of God. In fact, she questioned His very existence.
"I asked God to show me that He existed," Suzie says. "And when He did, He rocked my world."
One of the ways that God continues to rock Suzie's world is by giving her the opportunity to edit and compile the book, "Real Teens, Real Stories, Real Life".
Suzie began working on the book when she realized that there was no other book for teenagers that handled the tough issues. "I'd look in a bookstore," says Suzie, "and I'd ask myself the question, `why are we not talking about the things that matter?'"
When Suzie began her work on the book, teens from around the world volunteered to share their personal stories. From tragedy to triumph, Suzie's book is packed with true and inspiring accounts written by "Real Teens", containing "Real Stories", about "Real Life".
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't wait until this book got here..........2000-12-03
When I ordered this book from Amazon.com, I couldn't wait till it got here. When I read it I wasn't disappointed. Ginghamsburg Church (www.ginghamsburg.org) has a reputation for leading people into a radical relationship with Jesus Christ and this book by Mike Slaughter tells the stories and the lessons that we all have to learn to become radical disciples.
Great study book for Small Groups.......2000-06-19
I am about begin an interim ministry position and this book is going with me. Not only will it serve as inspiration for sermons about what it means to be a "Real Follower" of Jesus, but it will be suggested for small groups to use. The author of the book, Michael Slaughter, is the pastor of one of the largest most culturally relevant churches in the USA-Ginghamsburg Church in Ohio. The real life examples of personal testimony show that this church is really focused on people having more depth and meaning in their life as a result of the decisions they make when they come into a more serious relationship with God through the church. It's what every church should be about. As important as methods and strategies are for church growth, they are all empty without a focus on helping people discover the real difference that faith makes. The age old truths are retold in a fresh contemporary highly relevant way in this book. I know that many people are going to benefit from the insights in each chapter. The book will certainly help pastors like myself, but most of all it is going to be valued in the small groups which study and discuss the signficant and important questions found at the end of each chapter.

The least understood bird receives rare, individual attention.......2006-03-19
The roadrunner is an icon of the Southwest so you'd think there would be many studies out on the roadrunner already - but it's one of the least understood and rarely receives individual examination. Here to correct that deficit is THE REAL ROADRUNNER, a guide to the behavioral patterns of the bird. Martha Maxon is a retired zoologist and environmental consultant who grew up in southern Texas: her assembly of literature and science about the roadrunner come from years of personal observation and research and provide a scholarly yet accessible survey.

A useful reference in its own right.......2004-09-07
This idiosyncratic little book was produced in reaction to the exceedingly imperfect first revision of the Golden Guide, which disregarded willfully much of the abundant new information that had come available since the guide's first publication in 1966. Stallcup et al. do a good job of pointing out the Golden Guide's numerous and manifest shortcomings, but far more importantly, they provide many little tricks and marks that are still not common knowledge.
Is the book worth buying now that the Golden Guide is so clearly a piece of the past? Probably so, if for nothing more than the Willet and Sprague's Pipit entries. But what I'd really like to see is a new "Birds for Real" that takes on the Sibley guides--even the best (and David Sibley's books a r e the best, by far) should be fodder for discussion of the sort so well provided by Rich Stallcup.
