1 out of 5 stars Dangerous Words, Beware!.......2007-05-25

Chapter 8, titled: Is This Normal? States, "it is not unusual for a boy to watch another boy masturbate or to masturbate with a group of boys. Nor is it unusual for two boys to masturbate each other." My 13 year old son was accused of sexual assault by an 11 year old boy (a friend) after the 11 year old suggested they masturbated together, they did so on three occasions. The charge came a year later, social services and the police visited our home. Our younger son was almost removed from our home. Our 14 year old was questioned by police, charged, fingerprinted and we had to hire a lawyer. This book states that boys masturbating together or each other is not unusual. Maybe so, but it is a crime, and your child could be charged with sexual assault. Especially when the other child, out of guilt, fear, or revenge perhaps, tells his parents that he wasn't a willing participate once he realizes his "young, boyish curiosity" was a crime. BEWARE!

4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2007-05-15

I bought this book for my 12 year old son and he finds it to be very interesting. It has opened up discussions on things he would normally not discuss with me which has helped us have great conversations. I recommned this book for anybody with young boys going through puberty whom are normally not used to talking about what's going on with them.

5 out of 5 stars For boys who want to know the facts, this book has the answers!.......2007-04-10

What's going on down there? A general question, perhaps, but one that boys between the ages of ten and fourteen ask regularly about the changes their bodies undergo during puberty. In Karen Gravelle's book, What's Going on Down There: Answers to Questions Boys Find Hard to Ask, she describes the physical and emotional changes that occur in boys (and, to a lesser extent, in girls) during puberty. In addition, Gravelle discusses sexual activity, homosexuality, AIDS, and other related topics. Gravelle had help with the book; 11- and 13-year-old brothers, Nick and Chava Castro, served as advisors, asking questions and working with Gravelle to make the book's language easy to read and to understand.

I bought this book for my older son when he was ten years old. I liked the funny and informative cartoons, and my cursory reading before giving it to him left me believing it might help him navigate the storms of puberty.

I had not read the book cover-to-cover, but I did so recently in connection with an assignment for my master's degree in library science. I am glad I did. Reading the book carefully served to confirm that I made a wise purchase five years ago, something I suspected when I noticed that my older son had handed down the book to his younger brother a few years ago.

Although the book has a few weird and wonderful moments (like stating that many women don't find childbirth to be particularly painful!), I found it to be an excellent source of practical, no-nonsense information. Some parents might be uncomfortable with the book's approach. The author includes frank discussions of orgasms, masturbation, and abortion, and the illustrator has a drawing of an orchidometer so boys can measure their testicles to see how far along they are in the puberty process. For parents who want their sons to know the facts about their bodies, though, and for boys who need to know those facts, this book is the one book on the subject I would recommend first.

5 out of 5 stars so very informative.......2007-03-06

This book is packed full of useful information, easy to read, and helpful drawings. A must-read for any boy going through puberty.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information!.......2007-02-08

I mailed a copy of this book to my 10 year old step son, because he was asking his father questions about the process of becoming a man. I read the book thoroughly. I believe the book is excellent. There are a few points in the book that will make a parent uncomfortable, but it is information a young boy needs to know, and deals with situations he has likely seen on television or in movies. My step son's mother did not let him read the book because she felt he did not need to be exposed to the small section on homosexuality and masturbation. I ordered a copy for him to read at our house, and he told his father he was glad to have the opportunity to read the book. He stated that the book addressed questions he would never have asked his mother, and that the book also helped him determine where his friends had given him misleading or incorrect information about what to expect during puberty. Overall, this is an excellent book, and I hope that parents won't let their fears override an otherwise excellent method of providing a young man with the information he desparately needs to know.

Though not for the impatient, What's Going on in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life will undoubtedly make you a better parent. It is thick, detailed, and scientific. But it is also accessible to parents who have the time and patience to immerse themselves in the latest research on brain development. And for those who do, the rewards can be great.

You'll understand the inner workings of the brain like never before. You'll learn the latest thinking on the nature vs. nurture question. You'll gain invaluable insights into the evolution of the senses, motor skills, social and emotional growth, memory, language, and intelligence. But most importantly, you'll understand--maybe for the first time--exactly how great your contribution as a parent can be to the development of your young child's brain. Written by Lise Eliot, Ph.D., a neurobiologist and mother of three, What's Going on in There? is an immensely intelligent labor of love. It is based on the author's own "odyssey of discovery" as she sought answers to questions about her own role in carrying, delivering, and parenting her children. --Kelley Smith

Book Description

As a research neuroscientist, Lise Eliot has made the study of the human brain her life's work. But it wasn't until she was pregnant with her first child that she became intrigued with the study of brain development. She wanted to know precisely how the baby's brain is formed, and when and how each sense, skill, and cognitive ability is developed. And just as important, she was interested in finding out how her role as a nurturer can affect this complex process. How much of her baby's development is genetically ordained--and how much is determined by environment? Is there anything parents can do to make their babies' brains work better--to help them become smarter, happier people? Drawing upon the exploding research in this field as well as the stories of real children, What's Going On in There? is a lively and thought-provoking book that charts the brain's development from conception through the critical first five years. In examining the many factors that play crucial roles in that process, What's Going On in There? explores the evolution of the senses, motor skills, social and emotional behaviors, and mental functions such as attention, language, memory, reasoning, and intelligence. This remarkable book also discusses:

how a baby's brain is "assembled" from scratch
the critical prenatal factors that shapebrain development
how the birthing process itself affects the brain
which forms of stimulation are most effective at promoting cognitive development
how boys' and girls' brains develop differently
how nutrition, stress, and other physical and social factors can permanently affect a child's brain

Brilliantly blending cutting-edge science with a mother's wisdom and insight, What's Going On in There? is an invaluable contribution to the nature versus nurture debate. Children's development is determined both by the genes they are born with and the richness of their early environment. This timely and important book shows parents the innumerable ways in which they can actually help their children grow better brains.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book, if you have a scientific background........2007-10-06

This author is obviously very knowledgeable and the subject matter is extremely interesting. I learned a lot about my baby's brain development and even why he behaves as he does sometimes (for example, why no separation anxiety when they are young, but then LOTS of separation anxiety when they are older - It is all biology!). Fascinating.

BUT . . be warned that this is a very scientifically written book, almost like a medical textbook. Unless you are in the medical profession, you should read with a medical dictionary beside you. I missed a LOT of information because I do not have a science background.

I wonder why the author did not include a Glossary at the back? It would have been very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing help to those with premmies.......2007-08-13

I found this book easy to read and comprehend. It was extremly helpful as a mother of a 29 week premmie who is now a year old and having some developemental delays from arriving a whole trimester early. It gave hope and encouragement as well as info on how to help foster developement in avenues I had not realized. The book even has numerous references about premmies.

5 out of 5 stars SO interesting!.......2007-08-05

I have a hard time sitting down and reading a nonfiction book front to back. But this book is great, my mind skims across some of the really scientific parts, but 90% I read deeply to absorb all the great information. I am 1/2 way through in only 2 weeks, and that is impressive with a 5month old around(: I love this book, and I feel more empowered about my child rearing decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Good - If You Want to Know the Biology..........2007-07-12

For some reason, I thought this book would be more about what my baby is thinking. Instead it is very much about biology. Every chapter starts with a discussion of when a certain part of your baby's brain began developing including regions, names, and discussions about when and how fast the nuerons in that area mylenate. This leads to discussions about what your baby's brain can and cannot do and when that changes. You can extrapolate from this information to get an idea of "Whats going on in there?", but it isn't really what the book is about. For example, the book discusses that your baby can smell right at birth (maybe before) and that the scent of the mother and milk and so on play a roll in bonding. Then, it talks about the tests that were done to show that this is true. It never says whether or not your baby would enjoy more smells, or maybe which smells, or even if it matters whether or not there are any smells. For me, I wanted that kind of information, not so much biology. For example, if her room seems a bit stuffy to me, will is seem that way to her? Should I delay her nap time by 5 minutes to maybe open the windows and air it out, or could she care less? This book does not answer those kinds of questions.

However, as a baby brain biology book, I have no doubt that this is probably the tops on that score. It is interesting to know how your baby's senses develop and what her brain is and isn't capable of at a certain age. So if you want a book about that, this book is great, it is easily readable, and very accessable (the brain has complicated names for its parts, but there is nothing the author can do about that). If you are looking for a book that lets you in on what might be going on in that little head of hers...well, I haven't found that book yet.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone with kids.......2007-06-05

The two reviews below have great information about the book so I will just give my opinion.

This book was great! The author is funny and smart all at once. Some of the information is a bit technical but she explains it really well. I love how she starts each chapter with a funny little story, like using a paper box for a make-shift bassinet.

One reviewer gave it a 1 and said this book is more for students than parents. I couldn't agree less! I love knowing how my baby's brain developed and why she does certain things.

This book is definitely going in my permanent library!

Book Description

Graduate schools churn out tens of thousands of Ph.D.’s and M.A.’s every year. Half of all college courses are taught by adjunct faculty. The chances of an academic landing a tenure-track job seem only to shrink as student loan and credit card debts grow. What’s a frustrated would-be scholar to do? Can he really leave academia? Can a non-academic job really be rewarding—and will anyone want to hire a grad-school refugee?

With “So What Are You Going to Do with That?” Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius—Ph.D.’s themselves—answer all those questions with a resounding “Yes!” A witty, accessible guide full of concrete advice for anyone contemplating the jump from scholarship to the outside world, “So What Are You Going to Do with That?” covers topics ranging from career counseling to interview etiquette to translating skills learned in the academy into terms an employer can understand and appreciate. Packed with examples and stories from real people who have successfully made this daunting—but potentially rewarding— transition, and written with a deep understanding of both the joys and difficulties of the academic life, this fully revised and up-to-date edition will be indispensable for any graduate student or professor who has ever glanced at her CV, flipped through the want ads, and wondered, “What if?”

“I will absolutely be recommending this book to our graduate students exploring their career options—I’d love to see it on the coffee tables in department lounges!”—Robin B. Wagner, former associate director for graduate career services, University of Chicago

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read for graduate students .......2007-05-31

This book should be required reading for all graduate students, even those who are planning on remaining in academia.

At heart, the book is a primer on how to leave academia and the opportunities which exist for people with PhDs and MAs in seemingly esoteric fields. Since the overwhelming majority of graduate schools provide no real career advice for their students, this book provides a much needed service.

If you are planning on leaving academia, this book is essential. But even if you intend to remain in academia, you should read this book---if for no other reason then because it will help you to understand all of your career options...and, yes, you do have options! No one is stuck in academia and, as this book demonstrates, a graduate education does provide you with very real concrete skills.

When I decided to leave academia, I read this book in conjunction with other career books (such as What Color is Your Parachute?). While I recommend that those seeking to leave academia read a wide range of career books, this book was unique. It was the only book which addressed the many strange and worrying concerns that I had as a PhD seeking to leave academia.

My favorite part? The stories of the many, many people who left academia and found great careers. There is a huge reluctance to discuss these people within academia itself (great irony as the last fifteen years have seen the majority of PhDs in the humanities leave academia so we are talking about a reluctance on the part of graduate schools to discuss what the majority of their graduate students are doing). Putting a face on the people who left academia allowed me to look behind the academic stereotypes and to discover a broad and different world along with a range of exciting careers.

It was also helpful to read about how to do an informational interview and what to expect when doing one.

In an ideal world, this book would be required reading for all graduate students but since it isn't, you'll just have to buy this and read it on your own...but share it with your fellow graduate students.

And one final note: it does help. Using this book and others, I was able to leave academia and find a great-paying job which I really love.

5 out of 5 stars A Lifeline for Anxious Grad Students.......2007-04-13

This book is written for a very specific audience: grad students (and even established academics) who realize that academia may no longer be the right fit--or is just too crowded to afford any significant job opportunities--but who worry their esoteric studies (medieval Chaucer, the geopolitics of wheat production) may not have prepared them for other careers.

If you fall into this category, then the book is wonderful. If not, move on. While there are better general career guides available, if the hallowed halls of the academy no longer seem so hallowed, `So What are you Going to do with That?' is a breath of fresh air. For starters it is full of anecdotes from many academics who found successful and enjoyable careers beyond the ivory tower, applying their skills and interests in satisfying ways they never thought possible. This may be the most valuable aspect of the book for the anxious and concerned grad student: realizing that future ex-academics have options. Lots of options.

The book breaks down as follows:
Chapter 1: Will I Have to Wear a Suit? Rethinking Life After Graduate School.
Chapter 2: How Do I Figure Out What Else to Do? Soul-Searching Before Job Searching.
Chapter 3: Testing the Waters: Networking and the Transitional Experience.
Chapter 4: This Might Hurt a Bit: Turning the CV into a Resume.
Chapter 5: Sweaty Palms, Warm Heart: How to Turn an Interview into a Job.

And while much of this information may seem like old-hat to your friends who got MBAs, it's a revelation to those who are more familiar with the `Journal of Nietzsche Studies' than the `Wall Street Journal.' The section on `Information Interviews' in chapter three alone is worth the price of the book. (Information interviews worked for me. Twice.)

Some Amazon reviewers of the first edition complained that the book offers pat answers to standard questions about resumes, interviewing, etc...and that may be partially true. But let's face it, most grad students and academics suddenly confronting the prospect life outside of academia (and likely getting little support on such a prospect from within the academy) haven't thought about anything but academia, so they don't even know where to start.

If that's you, then `So What are you Going to do with That?'--basic though it may be--is custom tailored for you, and will give you hope and point you in the right direction. The authors (ex-academics themselves) trust that their readers (who are intelligent grad students and PhDs, remember) will be smart enough to take it from there.

3 out of 5 stars Should have listened..........2007-08-06

to all of the middling reviews for this book. I was seriously disappointed when I received it in the mail. First I thought they would list different types of jobs available and how to market yourself for them instead I was treated to 10 pages of their backgrounds and then their interviews of others who left the academic world. The interviews were interesting but not what I thought I was buying.

3 out of 5 stars Review by a Ph.D........2007-07-19

This is a decent book and offers a realistic approach and some sound advice to someone deciding to exit academia. The section on moving from the CV to the resume is useful for the academic trying to trim a multi-paged CV down to the bones.

5 out of 5 stars New 2007 edition is now available.......2007-04-06

A revised and updated edition of this book was published in March 2007, with the title: So What Are You Going to Do with That?: Finding Careers Outside Academia

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-28

Had high hopes for this one, was looking for some specific advice on employers and fields outside academia who would hire Ph. D.'s. Found mainly warmed-over What Color Is Your Parachute ignore-the-job-market-realities pap, old-hat interview and resume stuff, and other ideas geared toward helping lifelong academics understand a few basic things about the business world (in which I spent almost 20 years). $35 later I still don't have even a good general picture of my nonacademic prospects after completing the Ph. D. next year, but see no better source out there. Guess that's what I get for choosing a five-year-old out of print book; afraid I see the reason why.

4 out of 5 stars VERY helpful!.......2006-02-12

I hate that this book is out of print and so expensive! It helped me enormously to realize that there are other options out there than the ones we're usually told about! If you're considering leaving academia, or even staying in it, this book gives some other options and provides hope that there are other things to do in this world!

Former Washington Post reporter Nathan McCall won critical acclaim for his autobiographical Makes Me Wanna Holler, the story of his troubled youth, his criminal career as a young man, his three-year prison sentence for armed robbery, and his struggles to put his life together after his release. In this collection of essays, McCall addresses social issues and problems, filtering his comments through the lens of his own experience. Thus his commentary in "Gangstas, Guns, and Shoot 'Em Ups," recalls his youthful infatuation with The Godfather, and criticizes the dead-end fantasies of gangster rap. In "Men: We Just Don't Get It," he recalls the times he sexually assaulted women and looks at his own daughter with love and fear. He hopes she'll find someone who loves her, but is afraid she'll meet men who don't treat women with love and respect.

Book Description

Current Affairs / African American Studies

"Filled with essays that challenge America's myths.... His easy reading style unsuspectingly pricks the conscience."   --USA Today

ith the same personal authority and exhilarating directness he brought to his account of his passage from a prison cell to the newsroom of The Washington Post, Nathan McCall delivers a series of front-line reports on the state of the races in today's America. The resulting volume is guaranteed to shake the assumptions of readers of every pigmentation and political allegiance.
In What's Going On, McCall adds up the hidden costs of the stereotype of black athletic prowess, which tells African American teenagers that they can only succeed on the white man's terms. He introduces a fresh perspective to the debates on gangsta rap and sexual violence. He indicts the bigotry of white churches and the complacency of the black suburban middle class, celebrates the heroism of Muhammad Ali, and defends the truth-telling of Alice Walker. Engaging, provocative, and utterly fearless, here is a commentator to reckon with, addressing our most persistent divisions in a voice of stinging immediacy.

"[These essays] reinforce the moral authority McCall [brings]
to the issue of America's racial schisms."
--The New York Times Book Review

"Straightforward, quick-moving [and] erudite."
--Philadelphia Inquirer

4 out of 5 stars good.......2006-03-10

I'm really enjoying the reading, it has given new insight into the psychological portion of my girls.

3 out of 5 stars Two time award winning books.......2004-06-04

I find this author's books to be inspiring, mind warming, breather taking, but I think that Makes Me Wanna Holler was a better book for me. I don't know if I'm am the only one who thinks this. Now, if I had to pick a favorite chapter, I would have to say "Gangsters, Gun, and Shoot-`Em-Ups" was the best. One thing I like about this chapter was the whole gangster mentality. Also I like this chapter because I like the movie "The God Father" just like Nathan and his friends in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great one.......2004-04-15

A follow up to "Makes me want to Holler" I really enjoyed reading Nathans books. I have been waiting for his next one.
This a great story.

4 out of 5 stars The view from here........2003-12-31

This insightfull collections of essays didn't grab me in full, but it did give me a glimpse inside the world that shaped him into the man that he is today. His stories were intriguing and made me look at the world around me and notice the little things that could make the biggest impact on my life and how I viewed them. The best of the bunch was 1.)How he would get sex from young girls as a teenager, and now that he is the father of a daughter, he hopes that the boys her age will give her a better impression than he gave, 2.)His interaction with the little white baby in the take-out joint, and 3.)Driving with his friend and getting lost, only to find themselves on the property of a white-based church. Invest some time in Mr. Mcall's essays and it just might make you look around with a brand new set of eyes.

4 out of 5 stars What's Going on.......2002-10-11

The Author of the acclaimed bestseller "Makes Me Wanna Holler" strikes again with a collection of personal essays and observations entitled "What's Going On". Nathan McCall challenges readers to view the world through his eyes and share his experiences using a fluid writing style and substantive content.

Entering a new millennium, African Americans are faced with many so-called "hot button" topics. Many of these issues have been discussed and belabored at length. Some of these issues are so sensitive that authors, politicians, and community leaders will often shy away from them being careful not to damage hard earned notoriety. McCall is clearly not vying for first prize in any popularity contests; likewise, he makes sure to point out which of his views he knows will not be shared by many of his readers."What's Going On" addresses issues pertinent to blacks of this generation and his feelings regarding issues African Americans face in our daily lives.

While a book of personal opinion may not sound like an exciting read, "What's Going On" carries a heavyweight punch that travels from different ends of the spectrum and tends to surprise readers with every new chapter. In McCall's first book, the autobiography "Makes Me Wanna Holler", I was impressed with this authors journey from convicted felon to well traveled, acclaimed Washington Post Reporter. The autobiography was so inspirational to me that I jumped at the opportunity to read his newest creation. McCall's candor in all of the subject matter addressed is both poignant and refreshing. It's reasonable to assume that most African American readers will not agree with every single point, however it does provide an entertaining yet thought provoking look at modern day society.

I recommend "What's Going On" to the over 35 crowd, particularly those with a keen interest in current events. I also feel that these essays would make perfect topics for book club discussions. I give "What's Going On" a rating of 4.

This is a must have resource for any parent and/or physcian who is seeking how to intervene and retard/stop the downward spiral of autism. Has been an instrumental first resource for interventions and treatment through natural means. Be sure to get the most up-to-date version or write to Dr. Shaw for his latest research findings.

3 out of 5 stars RE-review.......2000-10-24

Wow, I really got slammed by people who gave this book five stars. Just for the record, I also have devoted 100% of my life, time and attention to my son because I too have the financial means and desire to do so. My point in my original review was that this book was too confusing and there is contradictory information. I have studied very much on the subject and there's no doubt that some of the theories are correct. For example, I agree with the vaccine problem issue. But in our case, the antibiotic issue doesn't hold water because he's never used antibiotics except for a couple of times. Also, some of the treatments are good, but there are better books out there which explain this in a less confusing and frightening manner. Also, the author DOES try to get you to send all blood tests to his lab. :)

5 out of 5 stars parent of recovered child.......2000-09-29

I have read the reviews of readers of this book (parents?)who have given it less then five stars and I can only assume that they have neither absorbed the implications of this book or more importantly implemented the treatments it recommends. They are doing a real disservice to their children and to readers/parents who consider buying this book. I was a mother with the time and the financial means to try everything and educate myself in every theory and practice under the sun. There are a few things that every child with autism/PDD probably has: an inability to digest the proteins in casein/gluten which cause undigested (food) peptides to both enter the blood stream and feed a yeast/candida problem that pockets the intestinal lining causing a leaky gut. There is also the issue of thimerisol (mercury) in the vaccinations, mercury is a serious neurotoxin. However, The real culprit in this story are the oral antibiotics that are dispensed to our children and destroy the natural flora and good bacteria that maintains our immune system, health and well being. If a child must be on antibiotics Dr. Shaw recommends how to keep this potential problem in check. Bettleheim called these children "the Empty Fortress" they are infact the toxic fortress. A program for health is outlined in this book with the recommendation to first clear up the yeast and after 60 days implement a casein/gluten free diet which by the way sounds much harder then it is. There are loads of recipes and food companies which deliver on the web. It is the beginning of wellness. For me the proof of this books worth has been my child who speaks two languages fluently, plays appropriately and is a joy to behold. The only two serious deletions in this book is the role of mercury (heavy metal and/or chemical detoxification protocols) and the role of essential fatty acids (esp. omega 3) in lessening hyperactivity and easing the ADD issues. For that you should look to other books and the web.

5 out of 5 stars Partners In Autisms - Knowledge & Understanding Pick.......2000-09-01

Do you find yourself wondering if someone came in the middle of the night, stole your beautiful child or family member, and left a distant stranger seemingly lost in a nightmarish prison of sensory defensiveness and walled-in isolation in their place? Are you tired of the never-ending battle to stay ahead of screams, mind blindness, and over or under stimulation using medications designed to mask and sedate rather than treat and heal? Well if you want to really begin to understand what is going on, if you want to take charge of your loved one's life and put them on a path to better health and a more promising future, then read this book.

I'm not the publisher, I'm a parent advocate who has spent the better part of the last 8 years living and dealing with Autism and lobbying for awareness and a cure. I'm not the author, but I have met and heard him and an innumerable number of his counterparts speak, and I want to tell you this book is not just enlightening, it's liberating. If you are in anyway involved with someone on the Autistic Spectrum, this book is an absolute "must read".

Dr. Shaw takes the complicated and often convoluted theory, and discoveries of some of the most brilliant researchers, physicians, scientists, and other experts in their fields, and explains, dissects, and relates their research and findings in a way that just about anyone can understand regardless of education or background. His book will help you discover how researchers are finally beginning to unravel the mystery and biological origins of a disorder that as recently as the 1970's was considered a psychological malady often attributed to cold and unfeeling "refrigerator mothers"

Using easy to follow examples and his unique way of relating complex concepts, Dr. Shaw thoughtfully examines the ground breaking medical research, case studies, and clinical trials behind some of the newest treatments and many more looming on the horizon. As you progress through chapters on various topics such as yeast proliferation, allergies, and fungus, you will begin understand the correlation between the gut and the brain, how the various systems of the body interact, and how and why a breakdown in one system directly and indirectly affects the others. Before you know it the dynamics and theory behind such controversial interventions as Secretin and Anti-fungal therapy begin to make sense, and the veil of mystery surrounding Autism seems to lift ten fold.

Although several cases of recovery are presented in the book it should be noted that there is still a long way to go. A lot more research needs to be done, and many more questions need to be answered. After reading this book however, I think you will find many exciting treatment options and a lot of viable alternatives to more conventional medications that merely eclipse symptoms and further submerge personality. More importantly, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness will diminish as your understanding increases and the very real prospects for recovery and eventual cure of this wide-ranging disorder are presented.

Book Description

Everyone knows it, everyone pretends not to know it, everyone sincerely believes it's not true ©¤ everyone knows it really is true. The romantic feelings don't last. Sooner or later, partners become judgmental, fearful, critical, withdrawn, controlling, dependent, overbearing, angry, rejecting¡ªwhich really means they become fully themselves, rather than showing only the pretty parts. But these darker feelings bring havoc to romance.

Successful authors Douglas and Naomi Moseley expand their theme of the "dirty little secret" of romance and relationship in their newest book, updating their knowledge of relationships. How to deal with this inevitable tarnishing of romantic luster? Therapists Douglas and Naomi Moseley suggest some practical, straightforward answers in their masterful new book. The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships rejects the notion that the end of romance means failure. Rather, the authors say, the romantic phase inevitably ends, but it can be superseded by a profound experience of the passionate, ongoing love that makes an adult relationship truly worthwhile.

The secret of success is found in the partners' being aware and truthful in their discovering and acknowledging the gritty truth of each other's hidden aspects: the insecure, fearful little girl and the insecure, fearful little boy who live inside adult bodies and control the adults' behavior. The inner little boy who wants mommy and acts like daddy and an inner little girl who wants daddy and acts like mommy. These emotionally young, power-hungry, control-seeking inner children will do anything to win, regardless of the cost.

These subpersonalities, declare the Moseleys, are not to be damned or expunged. Rather, as parts of the whole human being, they need to be recognized and acknowledged. When they are not acknowledged when they operate unconsciously they are certain to be destructive.

The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships gives special attention to sexuality and anger, detailing the connection between chronically unexpressed feelings and failed sexual intimacy, and explaining the remarkable healing value found in honest expressions of anger. It also describes, in a significant contribution to the current dialogue on child abuse, what occurs when two emotionally immature partners have children, and how, tragically, the seeds of continuing dysfunction are planted in those children.

This is a book for grown-ups, to be avoided by those who are afraid of themselves, to be eagerly embraced by all who wish to explore the deep, healing truths of life with an adult partner in intimate relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Read if you are ready!.......2003-02-12

This is an absolutely excellent book about what is truly going on in relationships! The author's will probably tell you what you don't want to hear about yourself, but if you are ready to face it, this book will take you to another life. This book makes us face how our own insecurities and inferiorities are having a destructive influence on our relationships. It forces us to change for the better. If you like this book, you will also like "Rhythm, Relationships, and Transcendence" by Toru Sato. It is a great book on a similar topic but explained from a different perspective. I recommend both of them highly!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-05-03

My partner and I were stuck. After 2 years together we seemed to be at a crisis in our relationship, and we didn't know whether to get married or split up. Overall we had a GREAT relationship, but things had gotten weird lately. I'd been critical, he'd been withdrawn. What was going on? This book jumped out at me from the amazon.com web site, so I got it and read it in about a week. It was an eye-opener. So many times I recognized myself in these patterns of behavior (or, if I didn't see myself, I saw the behaviors told to me by friends who'd been in failed relationships.) I've read a lot of self-help books, and this is among the best. Clear, well-organized, concise ideas with just the right number of case studies & examples. If you're having trouble in your relationships, maybe not even "big" trouble, just nagging kinds of things.... you will be amazed by the TRUTH of these ideas & observations about relationships. (Same authors have also written "How to Make Your Second Marriage a First-Class Success" which I also recommend.)

5 out of 5 stars No light possible without the shadow..........2000-08-26

What a timely book! It exposes the reality of human connection over the fantasy. And how long can the fantasy last? Powerful truth for those looking to last...as couples and as individuals in our rough and tumble world...

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone who wants to sustain a relationship.......2000-08-21

This is an essential book for anyone who wants to sustain an intimate relationship over a long period of time. How many of us in a relationship feel we already know what the other person is thinking or feeling? Conversation becomes a series of set pieces. The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships explains in jargon-free prose why and how we all get trapped in a particular communication paradigm. Moreover it provides the tools for exploring ways to break free of those traps, both in the way we speak to our intimate partner and the way in which we interact with each other. Doug and Naomi Moseley focus on what each of us as an individual can do for ourselves to understand why we act and react the way we do. These tools can then be applied as instruments to change our individual behavior. For me this book was like a bolt of lightning, illuminating and energizing. It has my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars This book will truly move you - I challenge you to read it!.......2000-08-15

Have you ever wondered why you cannot find the perfect partner or had a relationship that was really close but just not enough? Have you ever just felt "stuck"? Well, then this book is for you. I caution you though - it will be painful at first but hang in there and you will reap a much bigger reward than those "feel-good" books.

This is not a "relationship recipe" book. It will not tell you how to find the perfect partner. It will not validate your childlike views and beliefs about the "other" person in your relationship. This book will not point the finger at your partner's flaws - in fact, it is not about your partner at all - it is about you!

This book is a magnifying glass - you will discover things about yourself that will make you squirm and leave you speechless. This book is a mirror - you will laugh at the silly behaviors of the people in the examples and then feel the tears well up when you see your own reflection. This book is a bright light - you will see what has been in your dark places since childhood and finally understand what makes "you" who "you" are. This book is a helping hand - you will feel liberated from the burden of your humanness.

If you are mature enough and open minded enough and fully committed then this book will help you find the secret to "your" happiness. Once there, you will be ready for the next step - a fulfilling, passionate and juicy relationship. Your partner will need the benefits of this book as well and together you can build something truly beautiful. Luckily, this really requires more courage than effort.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you are ready to really think about your life and where you are going, try this book on for size.......2006-12-15

This gentle, introspective, and thought-provoking book doesn't shirk the hard questions or seek to wrap things up neatly for you, as many career guides try to with their tests and checklists. Instead, Feinberg trusts that if you are willing to take the time and energy to ask yourself the hardest questions and face your life, that you can make a real success of it.

This is a Christian-based book, so the author does quote a few bible verses and talk about how God might lead you in certain directions. It might not be the best choice for a non-Christian, but at the same time the religion isn't heavy-handed or off-putting, so if you think that her approach might be for you, don't let the religious aspect turn you off to it.

The strength of this book is in the thought-provoking questions she asks. Each chapter is divided into sections for each step in your journey of figuring out where you want to go in your life and career, and each section has a lot of material about things we should ask ourselves, pitfalls to consider, and new ways of thinking about it all. There are also some wonderful personal stories of people who have found themselves at a crossroads and have made either a mistake to learn from or a good choice to try to emulate.

I already have a career that I find satisfying and joyful, but I often wonder "What if?", since I have so many passions that could be taken in a money-making direction. This book helped me consider a lot of the benefits to following a few of my dreams, while providing the necessary reality checks.

This would be an excellent book for a bible study group or a group of under-30's to read together. Not only does each chapter have a lot to discuss, but the end of the book has some very personally affecting discussion questions that could be effectively used in a one-on-one or group setting.

4 out of 5 stars solid book... helps you ask questions, not answer them for you.......2006-11-24

margaret feinberg has written an excellent book, what the heck am i going to do with my life? it is geared toward those in their 20s who are asking that exact question, or some similar paraphrase.

i found margaret's writing to be very accessible and clear. the book's chapters each deal with one main concept, such as "calling: what pulls you?" and "impact: will it live beyond you?" i should note that the book is written from a christian worldview. if you don't share such, you'll probably still find it to be a worthwhile read, but differing worldviews may keep it from being as helpful as it will be for others.

there are two general aspects of the book that i found most useful. first, every chapter ends with a series of questions to think through. in some chapters there are also questions interspersed in the middle so you have the opportunity to think about things before the ideas begin to fade from your mind. there's even space to write out answers if you are so inclined. but even if you're not, i would recommend taking time to slowly think through the questions and not just breeze by them. they are well thought out and align very well with that chapter's topic. there is also a section of group discussion questions in the back.

second, there are various sidebars interjected throughout the book. they are sometimes just lists of ideas to think about, examples of what's being written about at that point, small self-assessment questionnaires, etc. again, i find them helpful in thinking more deeply about what the chapter is saying, staying better engaged (if you're prone to mental wanderings like i am), and actually understanding and trying to apply what margaret has written about.

overall, i highly recommend this book to anyone in their 20s or early 30s who is asking questions about life and the world, who wants to make a difference and isn't sure they are, who can't figure out how they're going to keep going for another 20 or 50 years, or anywhere in between. it doesn't have a lot of answers, which is good because we're each different, but it lays a foundation to think about such things more clearly and helps you ask and answer questions that will help you to make a few steps toward a more fulfilling, meaningful life.

5 out of 5 stars Real & Really Needed.......2006-09-21

I think this book should be required reading for all high school and college seniors. I also believe it would be a good idea to keep it in your reading rotation so that you came across it again every 2 to 3 years.

Why is this book so needed? Well, I think the answer to that can be found first and foremost in what this book is not. It's not filled with tests that are supposed to help you figure out your gifting. It's not filled with pie-in-the-sky talk of finding the job that's going to make your whole life great. It's not trying to provide generic answers to tough questions. It doesn't make any promises to make you rich.

What this book does and does well is to provoke thought about who you are and what impact you can make on the world around you. It's realistic! Margaret has taken great pains to point out the myths that abound about finding the perfect job that never causes stress and makes you a ton of money. She points out that often our passion and calling result in a career choice that meets our financial and emotional needs, but sometimes our career may simply be a means to meet our physical needs thus enabling us to pursue our passion and calling. I especially like the questions and surveys throughout the book that are intended to cause reflection. I believe many who read this book will discover things about themselves that will validate their current career choices or cause them to rethink them.

As someone who made a major career change in the past 4 years and who still has many decisions left to make, I whole-heartedly recommend What the heck am I going to do with my life?. Whether you're still in school or just not satisfied with where you are this book is well worth your time. I fully intend on using it as a small group study in our 20somethings ministry and hope that other ministry leaders will do the same.

4 out of 5 stars Passion, Calling, Destiny.......2006-08-31

Be warned - words like passion and destiny and calling are big, powerful, meaningful words. And I think this little book does well in using them for the discussion of "what do I want to do/be when I grow up?"

One of the writing gifts Feinberg brings to her work is the ability to tell a story and weave it into application. With this book asking what is most likely the more gi-normous question facing just about everyone - she takes the time to share pertinent experiences of real people in real life, and then asks the questions and ponders the options available as we all ask "what the heck?"

An opening story struck me where I find myself even now: Jerry Slocum and his passion for mechanical puzzles. Just like life, the answers are usually not out in front - and this thought, for me, was worth the price of admission:

"Jerry noted that - like life - many puzzles don't have clear solutions. They require innovation, creativity, and the willingness to face a challenge. 'One of the things you learn through solving puzzles is that you can't look for the obvious solution and keep trying it over and over, because you'll fail,' he says. 'You have to look at unusual and unorthodox ways of solving the problem. you have to shift to trying to do something one way and then the other, the way the inventor might have. It stimulates your thinking and logic and analysis.'" (p. 20)

Feinberg goes from there to discuss various upbringing factors that play into our choices as we decide what we want to do when we grow up. Family, money, heroes, personality - all play a part in how we choose life paths. How does calling fit into it? What about God and our spiritual growth coming into view? What about a passion for people, or for mechanics or arts or leadership?

"Destiny is a journey - one that we're already on whether we realize it or not. The good news is that destiny is something that happens to you; you don't happen to destiny. In other words, the very nature of destiny requires that someone or something greater than you is at work. Your destiny is out of your control. And that's a good thing." (p. 74)

Stories and application are great, but what does this have to do with me? I'm older, and I've probably already made the choices on what the heck I'm doing that will guide me through the destiny that I do not control. But this is where Feinberg's research and attention to detail comes into the picture. Throughout the book, the reader is asked to ponder, to think, to dream, and to write down. Entry pages are available to answer questions for yourself - rather than relying on my answers or Jerry Slocum's answers or Margaret Feinberg's answers, the reader is invited to join in the conversation with self-pondering and self-inquiry. You ask yourself what's important, what drives you, what in your past or your personality or your walk with the Lord has molded you for this moment in your life? This is where it hits the road, or it hits the fan - can I make this real enough in me to let a book be helpful, to let it be more than another how-to paperback, to let it be more like a guide and director to something really meaningful.

That might be laying it on to thick, but I don't think so. While I've made most of these life-directing choices already, I was also encouraged to keep asking, to keep seeking, to keep knocking - to keep following hard after God and the life He has envisioned for me. I think Margaret has brought something to the table that brings the stories, the application, and the under-appreciated questions to the top of the process. And I'm reading it for me, for how I can mold and shape my own kids in their upbringing and life-experiences, and sharing it with others in our church's small group structure, to help bring those things to bear in others' lives, too.

5 out of 5 stars what to do.......2006-08-11

Margaret Feinberg's book what the heck am I going to do with my life?, is a perfect book for those who are at the crossroads of their lives. She gives practical ways to aid you in finding direction for your life.

Margaret is like the big sister that most of us wish we had. She gives calm reassurance to let us all know that it's okay to not know what we want to do when we grow up. Sometimes before you find your calling, you have to search it out.

Margaret also helps us identify our passions in life. By asking thought-provoking yet personal questions, it's easy to find answers to what really makes us tick. By focusing on what we really love as opposed to what our parents or classmates think, pushes us to sometimes stand alone in front of the mirror.

It's good to know that even after many years of job hopping and career changing, we can still have an impact on the world we live in. Margaret makes it clear that it's never too late.

This book is great for those who need a little push or just need someone to hold their hand as they consider, for the first time or re-consider for the 1,000,000th time, what this life is all about.

I highly recommend it.
