Book Description

Since its appearance in English translation in 1996, Jürgen Habermas's Between Facts and Norms has become the focus of a productive dialogue between German and Anglo-American legal and political theorists. The present volume contains ten essays that provide an overview of Habermas's political thought since the original appearance of Between Facts and Norms in 1992 and extend his model of deliberative democracy in novel ways to issues untreated in the earlier work.

Habermas's theory of democracy has at least three features that set it apart from competing positions. First, it combines a concern with questions of normative justification with an empirical analysis of the social conditions necessary for the realization of democratic institutions. Second, at the heart of his model is the assertion of an internal relationship between liberalism and democracy. Finally, Habermas defends a conception of universal human rights that is not only sensitive to cultural differences but also calls for legal and political institutions that facilitate the cultivation of cultural and religious identities within pluralistic societies.

These essays demonstrate the extraordinary power of Habermas's theory of democracy through a further engagement with Rawls's political liberalism and through original contributions to current debates over nationalism, multiculturalism, and the viability of supranational political institutions.

4 out of 5 stars INCLUDING DEMOCRACY.......2000-03-26

After his major work on legal theory (Between Facts and Norms), Jürgen Habermas revisits some of the hottest issues on metaethics, political theory and moral philosophy. The book is nicely divided in five parts. The first is the most specialized one. Habermas offers an exciting contribution to metaethics. As readers might know, most disputes in contemporary metaethics revolve around the question whether we could find a cognitive basis for "first principles" or "values", or what is the same, whether there is an objective ground for things like human rights and principles like those of liberty and equality. By means of reflecting on his discursive ethics (the main insight of which is that standards of right are to be related to the necessary assumptions which we make each and every time we enter into discourses concerning practical questions, like that all those with which we talk could contribute something to the issue at stake), Habermas puts forwards a convincing case for a moderate cognitivism, or what is the same, for an objective foundation. This implies moving beyond the relativism characteristic of much liberal thinking. Specialized readers will be interested in confronting Habermas' argument with that of Alexy, and will find the chapter an expansion of his 1997 article on the Aristotelian Society Proceedings. The second part contains two chapters, devoted to one of the major events in contemporary political thinking: the lectures in which John Rawls (author of the world-known Theory of Justice, second edition published in September 1999) and Jürgen Habermas revisited the work of each other. Habermas stresses the similarities of his and Rawls' theory, but stresses the dialogical conception of his theory of justice, vis a vis the monological character of the well-known Rawlsian original position. The third part is an essential reading for all those interested in globalisation. Habermas offers his insights on the process of European integration. The articles there included reflect his commitment to the further development of the Communities, based both in his own fear of an isolated Germany and his hope for extending solidarity beyond nation-states. Specialized readers will find specially interesting his new insights on the cement of liberal post-nationalistic societies, what Habermas himself labeled as "constitutional patriotism". The fourth part contains Habermas contributions with the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Kant's pamphlet "Towards Perpetual Peace", a major statement in favor of cosmopolitan democracy. Habermas takes the opportunity to challenge realists, that is, those claiming that international relations are mainly a matter of force and deception (the like of Carl Schmitt, a favorite target of his criticisms). The fifth and last part deals with the expanding number of writers who adhere to deliberative democracy as the legitimate political arrangement (like Joshua Cohen and Seyla Benhabib, to quote some names). Habermas makes a nice analysis of the main trends and implications of this line of argumentation, which basically aims at transcending majoritarian politics and reinforcing the effective participation of citizens in politics. The Inclusion of the Other is especially recommended to all those interested in having a taste of the work of Habermas but who were deterred by the complicated prose of Continental Philosophers. The book is clearly written and crisply translated. Habermas himself supervises the English translation of his books. A colleague from Germany told me that she preferred reading him in English because the texts were always more rich and complete than in the original edition!

Book Description

Democratic equality entails a principle that everyone whose basic interests are affected by policies should be included in the process of making them. Yet individuals and groups often claim that decision making processes are dominated by only some of the interests and perspectives in the society. What are the ideals of inclusion through which such criticisms should be made, and which might guide more inclusive political practice? This book considers that question from the point of view of norms of democratic communication, processes of representation and association, and how wide the scope of political jurisdictions should be. Democratic theorists have not sufficiently attended to the ways processes of debate and decision making often marginalize individuals and groups because the norms of political discussion are biased against some forms of expression. Inclusion and Democracy broadens our understanding of democratic communication by reflecting on the positive political functions of narrative, rhetorically situated appeals, and public protest. It reconstructs concepts of civil society and public sphere as enacting such plural forms of communication among debating citizens in large-scale societies. The book considers issues of the scope of the polity at two levels: global and local. The scope of a polity should extend as wide as the scope of social and economic interactions that raise issues of justice. Today this implies the need for global democratic institutions. At a more local level, processes of residential segregation and the design of municipal jurisdictions often result in the ability for actions in one locale to affect those in other locales without those making the decisions having to include some of those affected in the decision making process. Metropolitan governments which preserve significant local autonomy may therefore be necessary to promote political equality.

5 out of 5 stars A fresh direction in democratic theory.......2002-08-06

"Democracy is hard to love." Iris Marion Young writes these words near the beginning of INCLUSION AND DEMOCRACY (2000). The love/hate relationship many people have with democracy originates in part from a love of democracy in theory but displeasure surrounding the outcomes of democratic systems in practice. I write this review from Jamaica during a time in which the struggle for democracy has reached critical proportions. The imminent national elections will play a part in determining the future direction of this polity. Jamaica presently operates under a neo-liberal economic system. Its flirtation with democratic socialism in the 1970s, though, along with its strong ties to Cuba hinted at a potential turn to socialism at a time when revolutions in Grenada, Iran, and Nicaragua fueled the Cold War Red Scare. The failure of both communist state capitalism and neo-liberalism among developing countries before and after the fall of the Soviet Union has left open the question, "What constitutes a democracy?" Furthermore, developed nations such as the US in the post-September 11 era are questioning WHO and WHAT constitute the fabric of their democracy amid daily economic struggles and racial profiling.
Young, like the late Hannah Arendt, is trained as a philosopher yet writes primarily as a political theorist. As such, Young is offering a theoretical framework in her discourse rather than a text full of regressions or allusions to philosopher-kings and queens. For academics in the discipline of "political science" who see a divide between the theorists and empiricists, this work offers fresh ideas for both camps. For the grassroots organic intellectuals and activists, you too will find new ideas.
Young outlines reasons why we should love democracy in three ways as I read the book: (1) Detailing an overview of contemporary democratic theory, (2) providing her criteria of the components of a democracy and (2) offering future directions in democratic theory. Per the title, "inclusion" is a cornerstone element of democracies and the prevention of exclusion is paramount. Jurgen Habermas has been criticized for composing theories that exclude several groups outside his closed Enlightenment project. What is telling about Young's thought is that Habermas taught a recent course at Northwestern University interrogating Young's ideas on multiculturalism and race. Young asks very important questions on the meaning of inclusion in a democratic polity.
So why read this book instead of the recent spate of works on the topic? The author is able to do something that unfortunately many writes cannot: compose a highly readable work that is simultaneously informative. In terms of innovations, Young links political theory, distributive justice, and social justice queries with "international" concerns for global justice; a move persons like Charles Beitz began and John Rawls avoided.
In conclusion, I urge anyone reading to pick up this work. The journal POLITICAL THEORY offers a useful recent response by Young to a critic of the book. Lastly, read Young's previous works on feminism and social justice (esp. JUSTICE AND THE POLITICS OF DIFFERENCE) to see get a sense of the author's writing. The only way we all can forge democracy in these precarious times is to talk, read, debate, and throw away the false belief that political theory is only an isolated academic exercise.

      Book Description

Citizenship, Inclusion, and Democracy explores the conceptual and empirical significance of the work of leading contemporary political philosopher, Iris Marion Young and her work in the field of education. In the past two decades political philosophers have begun to investigate normative theorizing in both educational theory and the philosophy of education, raising awareness in these previously neglected areas. Now, prevailing in the areas of theory, research, policy, and practice, these subjects take center stage in the debate about the profound impact of normative theorizing on education, examining the issues of supporting a publicly mandated system of education that remains open to all students within a particular society, regardless of differentiating circumstances and characteristics, as well as the development of equitable provisions for diverse groups. In this monograph, six expertly written essays discuss the importance of Youngrsquo;s theoretical work and critical social analysis on the topics of differentiated citizenship, group-based politics, social justice, difference, democracy, equality, and inclusion, with particular focus on the educational import of these issues. Concluding with a reply from Young, this collection illuminates the discussion about the centrality of public education in a modern, pluralistic society.

          Book Description

Mainstream politics in Northern Ireland have not been welcoming to women, but many women have been present in community and voluntary organizations, where their contribution has been outstanding. This book examines four organizations (including the recently-formed Northern Ireland Women's Coalition) where women have been active. It discusses the processes and structures created by these groups in order to work democratically across differences and argue that their experiences are invaluable to the development of feminist debates on democracy and difference.

            Book Description

Immigration raises a number of important moral issues regarding access to the rights and privileges of citizenship. At present, immigrants to most Western democracies must satisfy a range of conditions before achieving citizenship. This book argues that this is unjust and undemocratic, and that there should be a time threshold after which immigrants should either be granted full citizenship rights, or should be awarded nationality automatically, without any conditions. The author contrasts her position with the constitutional practice of two countries with rich immigration traditions: Germany and the United States.

              Book Description

In today's climate of accountability in education, there is increasing pressure to demonstrate the effectiveness of inclusion, yet there is much confusion about what inclusion actually does for individuals and their families. This book is for researchers studying inclusion, teacher educators and teachers and is suitable as a textbook for undergraduate teacher education programmes and MEd in inclusive education. In addition, this book is a must for people concerned with the 'bigger picture' and with identifying the important consequences of inclusion, participation and democracy for young people and their families.

The book offers a cross-cultural perspective. It contains a collection of papers from internationally renowned scholars who provide fresh insights into the goals and ambitions for inclusion, participation and democracy and how these might be realized today. Several of the authors look beyond schooling and ask how far inclusion fosters or inhibits individuals' sense of identity and community. The 'insider' accounts provided by some of the authors highlight the complex political and cultural changes required to achieve success with the inclusion project.

                Book Description

Globalization poses new challenges for the modern welfare state and democracies. One controversial issue is how struggles for economic equality are linked with struggles for recognition of difference according to gender, ethnicity and sexuality. The Politics of Inclusion and Empowerment examines the political and academic debates about the inclusion or exclusion of women and marginalized social groups from different policy contexts. The focus is on the different class and gender regimes influencing the interplay of political, civil and social citizenship at different levels of politics.

                  Book Description

A giant turkey is on the loose! Nate, the great detective, and his dog, Sludge, hear the news on the radio. But Nate doesn't want to take a case that everyone in town is on. Not even when Claude claims that he saw the turkey, then lost him in the woods. He holds up a turkey feather to prove it. Now Sludge wants the case. Claude wants Sludge, and off they go.

Miles away . . . Nate's cousin Olivia Sharp--herself a detective--hears about the missing turkey on TV. Before he can say gobble, gobble, Olivia appears on Nate's doorstep; and just as quickly, she's off hunting for the feathered creature.

It looks as if Nate can sit this case out . . . until he turns on his TV and a picture of the turkey flashes on. Suddenly Nate is moving just as fast! Now Nate, Olivia, Sludge, and Claude are all in pursuit of the turkey. Are two (or more) detectives better than one? From talking turkey to stalking turkey--will every detective come out a winner?

Here Nate hears of a giant turkey on the loose: despite his reluctance to become involved in a too-popular investigation, inside information lures him to one of his most puzzling cases. A fun story, especially for fans of Encyclopedia Brown and the like.

This is the first written of the Dolly series (published in 1968), but not the first chronologically. This novel introduces Johnson Johnson, a famous but enigmatic portrait painter who has far ranging and eclectic interests - and a beautiful yacht: 'Dolly'. The 'singing bird' is Tina Rossi, a leading coloratura soprano.

For those familiar with Dorothy Dunnett's historcial novels, the Johnson Johnson mysteries are very different. Johnson himself is a recognisable Dunnett hero (enigmatic and multi-talented) but the contemporary settings can be disconcerting.

The mysteries are well worth reading: they are fun!

This book was quite different from Starry Bird, but I still enjoyed it. This was the introductory book for Johnson Johnson, and it's easy to tell as he's not as finely developed as he gets in future installments. The novel is still fast-paced, and funny in its own way. The singing bird of the title is Tina Rossi, a world famous coloratura soprano. The story is built around her illicit relationship with an English scientist. There sre plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and the story does not end at all the way I expected. Still a pretty good 70's thriller.

I beg to differ with our estimable reader who reviewed this book before me. This is a great seventies thriller, and I think would make a great movie (a la James Bond style). The part in the book about the yacht outrunning a homing bomb on a power boat is worth reading the book for alone, but the rest of the book is great too. The "doctor bird" in this book is one of Ms. Dunnett's best characters. She might appear a bit anachrinistic but this book was written in 1970 after all. B. Douglas MacRannoch is a treasure - a tough, no-nonsence girl who thought up to this time in her life, that she could manage on her own. She meets Johnson and is swept unwittingly into an espionage game that really takes her by surprise. We meet all sorts of eccentric characters - the Begum, Dr. MacRannoch's father, and a Turkish ballet dancer of all things. It's a great romp of a book, and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end and you find out that nothing is as it seems.

This book is sometimes published as OPERATION NASSAU; all the "Dolly" series have, confusingly, alternative names. The "Dolly" series, set in present time, is a poor shadow of Dorothy Dunnett's brilliant Lymond series, or even the more convoluted and less fun Niccolo series. To be fair, she writes the lighter "Dolly" books for relaxation in between the heavy research and plotting demands of her historical novels. Nonetheless, lack of historical weight does not explain the uneven pace, inadequate characterisation and sheer absence of a "hook" which keeps a reader reading. This offering in the series is one of the worst culprits. The characters are particularly unreal. What grates with me most is the underlying assumption in this book (which plays quite a significant role in the plot) that the heroine, because she is a successful doctor, must have had a huge complex about achievement and self-worth to have been so driven as to become a professional at all. This unfortunately killed off the pleasure of what was already a fairly ho-hum reading experience for me.

I ordered this book from the library since it's out of print. This is the third or fourth book in the Dolly series, but I couldn't get the others first. My curiosity was piqued because I love Dorothy Dunnett's writing so much. This is as different from the Lymond and Niccolo series as possible, but a really good thriller. Even though the title sounds like a children's book, this book is certainly not that. Dolly is a large yacht and the hero is a bookish, bifocal wearing master spy from Britain MI6. The Bird in this book and the others is girl who gets embroiled with Johnson for some reason or other. This book keeps you guessing right up to the end. It is hard to follow all the way through since the characters are so bright and oh so brittle with their humour, but it's worth persevering with. I would like to continue to read what I can find of this series. It's actually quite a bit of fun.

These Dolly books are hard to find, but worth the effort. This one is an extremely whimsical story about a very talented trained Nanny. Oh how we all would love to have a Maggie Bee Nanny looking after our children. Every time I read a new selection in this series, I can't help thinking how good they would be if done in film. The stories are fast-moving, funny with lots of suspense. The characters that are in each book are wonderful. In this one we encounter Eskimos, anthropologists, a millionaire toy manufacturer, and lots of wonderful children and babies - and of course the inimitable Johnson Johnson. We also travel all over the place - Winnipeg Canada in the dead of winter, New york and Yugoslavia. We also see more of Dolly in this series. For those in the know, Dolly is a 52 foot luxury yacht. These books are a lot of fun to read, and I will be sorry when I've read my way through them all.

With these words, we are drawn into the world of Rita, make-up artist to the stars.

The Dolly series are Dorothy Dunnett's contemporary mysteries: a world away from the intrigues of Niccolo (fifteenth century) and Lymond (sixteenth century). Or are they?

Dorothy Dunnett brings the same energetic, descriptive writing to the Dolly series as is evident in her historical novels. The action is fast, the hero is enigmatic and intelligent. The setting is exotic, and the characters? Judge for yourself.

Recommended as both great fun and as an example of Dorothy Dunnett's versatility. There are seven novels in this series.

Once you realize that the book is a prequel to the other Dolly books, a lot of it starts to make more sense. In this book we hear a little bit about the accident that killed JJ"s wife and the damage it did to him. We also meet a very interesting Bird - a makeup artist no less. Her hair colour changes with the weather in the book, and that is where she gets the name "bird of Paradise". Rita is quite a gal! As she says "wee", but mighty. There is a lot of confusinon in the story, and it takes some sharp interpretations to stay ahead of the enigmatic Johnson, and I have to admit that I didn't succeed when it came to the discovery of Rita's origin. But we visit Madeira, Barbados and St. Lucia and that is wonderful thing. The book bears the Dunnett trademarks - bright dialogue, exotic settings, cheerful characters (though with more secrets than we can imagine. A pretty wild ride overall!

3 out of 5 stars A "modern Lymond" fails to stir.......2001-02-15

Dorothy Dunnett is the celebrated authoress of the Francis Crawford of Lymond series (beginning with THE GAME OF KINGS), which to many are the definitive works of historical fiction by a living author. For some unfathomable reason, her "Dolly" books (of which BIRD OF PARADISE is the first) don't work nearly so well. They somehow fall flat on their faces - laboured, uneven, and lacking excitement. BIRD OF PARADISE is actually one of the better ones, but even so it seems pale and sickly, particularly when compared to the vibrancy and grippingness of the Lymond books.

The premise for these books don't portend disaster; they are light-weight and set in the latter twentieth century. Each book is self-contained, and is narrated by a different woman (the "bird" in the title). The hero (an English spy and world-famous portrait-painter) makes a enigmatic appearance in all. The stories are in the style of the Gothic romance: There is suspense, danger and mystery, and sometimes a dash of romance. You wouldn't think there would be difficulty in this, and there is nothing obviously bad about the writing itelf, yet the stories just don't take off.

Nonetheless, a Lymond fan might find these books an interesting comparison. Lymond is the definitive romantic super-hero: An astute politician, a brilliant soldier and tactician, charismatic leader of men and armies, master spy and dissembler, accomplished musician, razor-sharp intellectual and outstanding lover; while endowed with fierce patriotism, integrity, loyalty and a sense of humour, he also has a rapier wit, a brutal streak, and neurotic tendencies (in the fine tradition of the mysterious and tormented hero). A favourite parlour game of Lymond fans is: How much is Lymond a product of his time? In other words, what would he be like if he lived in our day and age? Would he be a statesman? Perhaps a diplomatic? A cutting-edge scientist who in his spare time writes devastating classical music critiques and fences competitively?

I believe that DD's answer, consciously or otherwise, is in Johnson Johnson, the hero of the "Dolly" books. It is too jarring for a persona as dashing and glittering as Lymond drop into our real world in all his flamboyant glory. JJ is Lymond in essence, but banked down. The mystery is achieved by him hiding behind a pair of bifocal glasses (which, you will come to realise, he doesn't actually need), an inscrutable expression and a mild manner. His intellectual and scheming prowess are exercised in the course of his real vocation of a spy in Her Majesty's service, which also serves to display his patriotism and his enigma. His artistic side is expressed in his portrait painting, and the assassination of his wife (which occurs before the book begins its narrative) hints at his torment. Dashingness is supplied via the sleekness and luxury of his yacht, "Dolly". I feel sure that while JJ can not sweep around in period clothing, cut dashes through royal courts or win glory through soldiering as Lymond could, he can be as interesting a character, even within the constraints of the more familiar twentieth century. Unfortunately, in DD transporting her creation through time, something seems to have been lost along the way, and the reader is left feeling disappointed and flat. JJ is not nearly as arresting a character as Lymond, and the narratives are not nearly as interesting.

This is a very fast-paced thriller like the others in the Dolly series. Johnson is here in all his glory, and this time the Bird is a real smart cookie - one who likes to cook believe it or not. This book has everything - sex, stolen jewels, spys, murder and lots of action. Sarah is the bird in this story, and she's a really likeable dame. Her mother and dead father provide the quirkiness. Her brother is the plodder, and her friends show the fast life that money pays for in the beautiful Spanish town of Ibiza. Sarah finds she is involved with three young men and is in the enviable position of having to choose, but unfortunately the choices are really made for her in a well-orchestrated denouement engineered by the enigmatic Johnson. Read this series. It's great fun.
