This is one of the greatest books that I have read. Pratical techniques that could probably save relationships (marriages, family relationships, friendships,etc.) I greatly recommend this book for pre-marital couples, married couples, friendships even working relationships. The principles in this book has opened my and my husband eyes on our apology languages. When sorry doesn't seem good enough, find out why!!!

This book is one of the better installments in the "Five Love Languages" series of Gary Chapman. Having read the original Five Love Languages title and a few of the follow-ups, this one provides the most additional fresh material to the initial volume. Being able to communicate a sincere apology is an increasingly needed skill in today's age of dodging responsibility and laying blame on others. Chapman and Thomas do a good job in providing the reader insight as to how to apologize in five different styles, depending upon the recipient's personality or "apology language." Included with the book are an apology profile and a group study guide. For anyone wanting truly to make amends in a fractured relationship, this volume is a good place to start.
Good, but could be better!.......2007-06-04
The book presents five methods to express an apology. Your job is to identify the preferred method of your spouse/significant other, family members, co-workers, etc., then use their primary method when offering an apology. I'm sure the authors' idea in writing this book was to build on their "Five Languages" series of books, which is a clever idea; however, in my opinion, a better idea would have been to title the book "The Art of Apologizing" or perhaps "The Five Steps to a Sincere Apology" and teach readers to use all 5 methods in all apologies. One example in the book tells of a man who was annoyed by his girlfriend's continual complaining and negativity. When he confronted her, he was blown away by her response. She used all 5 languages and he knew, without a doubt, it was a sincere apology. They have had the best relationship ever since and plan to get married. Had the girlfriend narrowed her apology to one or two languages, the boyfriend probably wouldn't have been blown away, and their relationship may not have turned out nearly as well. I say, why limit an apology to anything less than all 5 languages. Give the one you offended a full, complete, and sincere apology and let the healing begin.

One of my top 20. Somewhat depressing but oh so true........2006-07-08
This short book has long been one of my favorites. Hardy's philosophical musings may depress some but they ring so very true. Hardy is quite honest about life, art, mathematics, and his failing abilities. For example, his statement, that a very small minority of us are really good at what we do may sound depressing today. But the fact is true.
I can recall when words such as super, excellent, awesome etc. were used judiciously and very rarely to describe truly significant achievement. Today, doing one's job, albeit poorly, is described as excellent.
What I most like about Hardy's book is it's honesty and respect for the reader. A suggestion. Read the book proper BEFORE wading through C.P. Snow's forward. After about the second read tackle the forward.
A must have.
No need to apologize........2006-06-04
One of the most scholarly books that has been written in the 20th century, G.H. Hardy's thrilling memoir tells a story that other people are too afraid to discuss. Hardy's depressing transition from mathematical genius to near vegetable is a telling example of the archtypical fear of cerebral atrophy that resides among even the most resilient and foolhardy among us. This concise "novel" reads fluidly and especailly so for when written by a mathematician and serves to enlighten the world of the multi-talented nature of a world class mathematician. All in all this book is a rare find and should be read by people of all ages: whether a young aspiring mathematician or an old decrepit intellectual.
A Non Mathematician's apology.......2006-03-30
As Hardy himself makes clear in the beginning, he would never have written such a book if his mathematical powers had not failed him in old age. I do feel like this book is more an apology for not being a mathematician anymore than for having been one. As for all true loves, the time for judging and summings things up comes only when the joyful days of passion are over. I was hoping this book would give me an inspired first person view of what is higher mathematics and what is like to be a real mathematician. I found that it is not a good book for that, it doesn' t even try it. What it accomplishes instead is giving a precise, objective, cruel, marhematically clear picture of the drive, the ambition, the passion for excellence in any activity, be it a sport or a science that makes the life of the ones who dedicate their life to it so more pure and meaningful. It also poses some tough, fundamental questions regarding how much of your life one can dedicate to one single "abstract" passion without having to go trough some really bitter times and regrets in old age. My personal answer is that what really counts, in the end, is how much you loved and, what was sorely missing in Hardy's life, how much you express that love. But for some people, gifted and cursed at the same time, that is still not enough.

This poignant essay is a uniquely flavoured blend of autobiography, philosophy of mathematics, and cognitive psychology. It's one of my favourite bits of writing and I highly recommend it.

This book is great motivation for the aspiring mathematician, or even the distringuished math guru. It gives a brief glimpse at the intriguing relationships Hardy shared with his two collaborators, and provides a well worded justification for the study of 'real mathematics'.

Plato, the great philosopher of Athens, was born in 427
BCE. In early manhood an admirer of Socrates, he later founded the famous school of philosophy in the grove Academus. Much else recorded of his life is uncertain; that he left Athens for a time after Socrates' execution is probable; that later he went to Cyrene, Egypt, and Sicily is possible; that he was wealthy is likely; that he was critical of 'advanced' democracy is obvious. He lived to be 80 years old. Linguistic tests including those of computer science still try to establish the order of his extant philosophical dialogues, written in splendid prose and revealing Socrates' mind fused with Plato's thought.
In Laches, Charmides, and Lysis, Socrates and others discuss separate ethical conceptions. Protagoras, Ion, and Meno discuss whether righteousness can be taught. In Gorgias, Socrates is estranged from his city's thought, and his fate is impending. The Apology (not a dialogue), Crito, Euthyphro, and the unforgettable Phaedo relate the trial and death of Socrates and propound the immortality of the soul. In the famous Symposium and Phaedrus, written when Socrates was still alive, we find the origin and meaning of love. Cratylus discusses the nature of language. The great masterpiece in ten books, the Republic, concerns righteousness (and involves education, equality of the sexes, the structure of society, and abolition of slavery). Of the six so-called dialectical dialogues Euthydemus deals with philosophy; metaphysical Parmenides is about general concepts and absolute being; Theaetetus reasons about the theory of knowledge. Of its sequels, Sophist deals with not-being; Politicus with good and bad statesmanship and governments; Philebus with what is good. The Timaeus seeks the origin of the visible universe out of abstract geometrical elements. The unfinished Critias treats of lost Atlantis. Unfinished also is Plato's last work of the twelve books of Laws (Socrates is absent from it), a critical discussion of principles of law which Plato thought the Greeks might accept.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Plato is in twelve volumes.

The translation is easy to follow when looking at both languages, which can sometimes be difficult due to certain liberties most translators rightly take to make the English sound better, yet in this Loeb both good English is used and it sticks to the Greek for the most part. This quality makes it helpful for the student of Greek who needs some help while translating if an instructor is not available.

Like most volumes in the Loeb series, the emphasis is not on word-for-word precision in the translation, but on acheiving greater readability in broader terms. Since the original text in ancient Greek is provided on the facing page, the editors assume that anyone with a little knowledge of Greek can supplement the looseness of the translation by referring to the original. And in general, the compromises made in this way are good ones throughout the series. This particular translation is one of the more succesful in the Loeb series and manages to chart a course quite close to the original while also catching the flavor of idiomatic English.

The four books in this volume are foundational for anyone interested in Western philosophy. They touch on the "BIG" themes like the gods, Truth, Wisdom and Death...
Death is the ultimate bummer in the ancient Greek worldview. It is not a pretty picture. As seen in the Odyssey, death can be a very nasty place. Even for the best---heroes like Achilles, death is like an eternal waiting room with no eventual appointment. How unsurprising then, that Socrates, who loved to turn Greek convention on its ear, would envision death as the ultimate journey, the ultimate freedom.
Socrates sees the chief value of death as the soul's final separation from the horrid constraints of the body. According to him, the body holds back the soul. With it, man can never encounter the ultimate justice, beauty and truth. Without the body, all things seem possible to Socrates. As far as this line of thinking goes, I find Socrates' thought to be very similar to some forms of Buddhism and the more extreme kinds of Christian asceticism (largely influenced by Plato's Socrates).
However, Socrates goes beyond this. He claims that there is some kind of reward that awaits those who willingly come to death. A seat among the gods he calls it...
How ironic then that Socrates dies amidst the worldly concern of a debt that he owes.
How does that old line go? Something about folks trying to save their own life losing it?
A necessity to any philosophy/greek student........2001-03-04
The mirror text offered in this book is of the most importance to any serious philosophy student. However for the mirror text to have any use you must know some Greek. The Greek text is on one side with Fowler's english translation on the other. It serves as an excellent reference whether using the Fowler translation or another translation because at any point where a misunderstanding occurs which may be due to a word choice in translation, one can simply look at the greek. It serves as a great reference for a person who takes Plato seriously and knows some Greek.

the Medical Malpractice apology.......2007-02-12
I read this book twice from my local library and finally had to buy my own copy, after sending it as a gift to grandchildren, clergy and friends. Now, suddenly, Dr Lazare's book is showing up on medical websites as a new concept for physicians dealing with mistakes before they become malpractice lawsuits. In fact even the lawyers who have counseled the "Do Not apologize, it will only be a legal admission of guilt" position for years are retreating and more and more state legislatures are passing laws that a physician's apology cannot be used in subsequent legal actions.
To me this is proof that a great book like "On Apology" can have a wider influence than we could ever imagine.
When we talk of a 'seminal' book, we mean that it carries within its pages the seeds for new thinking. This is a SEMINAL book.

Others have reviewed some of the specific details of the book so rather than repeat the same information, let me focus on what I found most useful.
While the parts of apology were interesting what I found most profound was the section on why apologies sometimes fail. It was enlightening to understand that an apology is not always a one time request for forgiveness, but often the opening of a negotiation between the parties. For example: When someone had hurt or betrayed us we need to understand that we really do share the same values otherwise we can't trust them and restore the friendship. Also the examples of failed apologies and how they can make thing worse than saying nothing and who amoung us has not recieved an insulting apology that hurt rather than healed.
I found myself mentally placing people I know into different situations portrayed in the book and could easly see why certain friends reacted the way they did to each other. I think you will do the same.
On apology is an invaluable tool in improving your own apologies and in understanding others. Be forewarned, you will never look at apologies the same again, never offer another flipant "I'm sorry" and never again accept one.
A honest and thoughtful book for those who really want to understand this most profound an potentially healing human interaction.

I have met Dr.Lazare in person no joke! I may be a kid but I heard one of his speeches. He is very inspiring to hear. He is Pyscaiatrist And is also a Chanceller and UMASS Medical School.

Slightly Dated, but Still Very Relevant.......2007-06-24
I both enjoyed and unenjoyed this book. It's a bit hard to explain why, though. I enjoyed it because it was an interesting tale and lightly told. Many of the points are not difficult to graps, even when guised as allegory. But at times, some of the allegorical characters really got rambling on and on and this made it difficult to wade through for what, exactly, was being allegorized. But, as Lewis himself admits, it was a bit dense at times and therefore he added bylines at the tops of each page to help readers who get bogged down in the quagmire. So, I suppose, on the whole it was good, and I would recommend it to other Christians, but I have my suspicions that non-Christians won't quite see it the same way.
A Searing Commentary.......2006-09-21
While on the surface this book is an allegorical journey of Lewis' progressive conversion experience, it gets little "press" as a commentary on society. Just about everything modern (and even post-modern) civilization hold dear is put in its proper perspective in this novel (autobiography). Continuing on in his diatribe against the Establishment (e.g., the "world" and its values) in "That Hideous Strength" and "Abolition of Man," Lewis picks apart specific philosophies and values in everything from what we now call post-modernism back to Spencer, politics to art, hedonism to ascetism.

If the first fiction by Lewis you read is the seven volume Narnian set, the rest of his works can appear rather puzzling. Lewis said to Tolkien, there wasn't anything available of the sort of thing he liked to read, so he'd have to write it himself; arguably both Tolkien and Lewis wrote for readers who liked to read what they liked to read, and in so doing struck a deep vein and a lost chord.
This book was originally published by Catholic publishers Ward and Sheed who naturally pitched it to their Catholic readers. However, that got Lewis regarded as an RC, a reputation he was anxious to live down, and he referred lightly to the publishers as "Ward and Sneed". That was only the first of many misunderstandings he'd be involved in simply because he wrote what he wanted, ignoring the dictates, as it were, of the market.
This book has been released in various versions. Some have, as Lewis intended, notes or annotations explaining the allegorical meaning, for instance the Red and Black savages are communists and fascists, respectively. Oddly enough, at one point Bantam published a pocket version leaving off these notes, which transforms the allegory to a "straight" fantasy, and leaves many readers confused.
Tolkien said he didn't write allegory, and the Narnian Chronicles, despite certain correspondences are not allegory, but this book is. The form is based on John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Regress. Ironically, Bunyan began his work with a long poem apologizing for the fact that it's an allegory. Lewis spent much of his time apologizing that his books weren't. Why we still read them is that he refused to conform to his times (and their notion of "best-sellers", and therefore has outlived them.
Between this, his first fictional work and 'Till We Have Faces, his last, Lewis output varied widely, not in quality but in style and genre. This volume, with the graphic enhancement of a well-known illustrator of Tolkien, re-introduces us to the long-forgotten genre of allegory at its most imaginative and captivating. Lewis demonstrates his unique gift of resonating with diverse readers and making a story his own.

I recently listened to this work of Lewis' as read by Whitfield from the 3rd edition. I have no doubt that I would have enjoyed reading it, but this narration truly brought it to life in a manner that reading might have failed to do.
Having some background certainly will help the reader to understand what Lewis is doing here. Certainly, someone unfamiliar with John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" would stand a pretty good chance of getting lost. I'm not sure I agree that familiarity with Lewis's other, later, writings is necessary although it certainly wouldn't hurt. Aside from Bunyan, I believe this work stands well on its own.
You might want to consider as well, reading the afterword to the 3rd edition in which Lewis gives some insight to his use of the word romanticism which he believes on second thought adds to some confusion due to it's broad use. Reading that in advance may add some needed enlightenment. Reading it a second time is probably a needed investment as new applications and understandings will appear. That is the nature of well written allegory.
Allegory is often a misunderstood literary vehicle. Lewis struggled with his relationship with JRR Tolkien at some levels because Tolkien absolutely despised allegory in all its forms and was wary of any work where he detected it. No doubt Lewis was well aware of that and got an earful through his association with Tolkien as well as his other acquaintances who over the years came to be known as the "Inklings" where current writings were read, critiqued and evaluated.
Lewis dabbled in allegory in other areas although no other work truly can be called a pure allegory so much as this, his first novel as a believer. The Narnia Chronicles contain allegorical literary devices but are not purely allegory. The Space Trilogy can be said to do the same but is even less allegorical than the Narnia Chronicles.
Really good allegory, doesn't require a key to give it understanding. This work of Lewis can be said to be really good allegory but there are some elements of higher literature (to be expected in a professor of Literature) and some language elements where Latin maxims are included without the benefit of translation. If you're reading this for anything other than entertainment you'll find you probably need to do some work to understand the subtle nuances that Lewis conveys in his use of these maxims as well as some of the names which will not be so readily apparent to the casual reader. That understood, the casual reader should still be able to come away with the gist of what Lewis is illustrating and be entertained in the process.
A brief word about the narration, as I listened to this on CD rather than reading it directly. It is outstanding! The use of many distinctive voices which are memorable and consistent make this a dramatic reading that is rivaled by few others I've ever heard. In fact, I'm almost tempted to push for your first experience to be hearing it that reading it for just that reason. There is a cadence to the reading that shows Lewis had a grasp on drama and poetry that I wish he'd have continued to evidence in his later works to the degree he did here. It is breathtaking and brilliant on its own merits whether you are in sympathy with his primary message or not.
Definite 5 stars all the way around! An excellent book.
Wonderful allegory.......2006-02-19
This, the first book Lewis wrote after finding Christ, is an amazing story - a sort of homage to The Pilgram's Progress. In Regress the main character leaves his home of Puritania - ruled by a powerful but unseen Landlord - in search of his heart's desire, a beautiful island.
He wanders through all the philosophies of the world including Hedonism, Athiesm, Nihlism and many more "isms". All throughout, Lewis brilliantly manages to make complex theological and philosophical truths plain with simple allegory. There are moments of pure joy in this story. Highly reccomended.

This "book" is a collection of postcards to tear out and use in different situations. It might be good to have one on hand, maybe even several copies. Tuck it in with the gift for the next baby shower you attend.
The situations covered include being disruptive in a restaurant, driving erratically while tending the baby, or keeping the neighbors awake at night with the crying baby. Hopefully it will bring a smile to the face of the soon-to-be parent, though if they actually use them, it may be with gritted teeth. The humor is easier to enjoy when you don't have a wailing baby squirming in your arms.

The Purple Plato.......2002-10-15
The main body of this book is organized similarly Pharr's justly famous "Purple Vergil": each two page spread has 12-25 lines of Greek in the upper left, with the rest of the spread full of line-by-line notes covering difficult constructions, slang, vocabulary and context. This makes Plato wonderfully accessible with a minimum of flipping pages back and forth.
The book's three appendices are (I) a series of sentence diagrams useful for understanding difficult sentences in the text and also as models for learning, (II) an alphabetical chart of verb principal parts and (III) a list of words appearing in the Apology by frequence of their appearance. Finally, a vocabulary of all words appearing at list twice fills in the back of the book (the vocabulary, incidentally, is keyed to the _Athenaze_ textbooks, which I suppose would be a useful feature if you used those books).
Easy and Effective.......2000-11-16
I "learned" Greek on a text that used much of the same vocabulary that shows up in Plato's Apology of Socrates (the JACT text), and frankly, it was a nightmare.
However, if one learns Attic greek using 'fake' Greek (as it should be done) and then turns to Plato as the first "real" Greek--get THIS text. The commentary is fantastic, the lexicon great, the notes very helpful. Between this text and a translation, in fact, I would think most intermediate Greek students would be able to read it without any outside help.

An Excellent Manual for Reading Plato's Original Text.......2000-07-11
This book was wonderfully organized for those who would like to read ancient Greek texts. We can read Plato's Apology without looking up the Greek dictionary. In the appendices, some Sentence Diagrams,table of the tense of the verbs of the Principal Parts, Word Frequency List, and the Vocabulary List were provided.

Golden Rule.......2007-01-19
Understood the book, but how are you going to retrain providers until they are sued! Why aren't they trained in medical school from the beginning the golden rule (Treat others as you want to be treated)? Every organization needs to make this mandatory reading before they are allowed to see patients within their facility! Who knows, if they learned that patients are real people, their patient capacity might fill real fast!

An Impassioned and Thoughtful Plea from a doctor to doctors to say "I'm Sorry".......2005-09-04
Given all that has been recently reported on physicians saying "I'm sorry," this short, straightforward book couldn't have come at a better time.
Dr. Michael Woods has written a practical, motivational book directed at physicians on the why's, how's, and what's of apologizing to patients. Drawing from personal experience, stories from other doctors, examples from other industries, and research data, Dr. Woods does not hold back in making an impassioned plea for physicians to master this tricky part of the patient-doctor relationship.
At ~82 pages, you can probably read this book in one or two sittings (In fact, I read most of it in the waiting room as I waited to see my doctor. Luckily he didn't have to apologize for anything that day). Dr. Woods moves quickly from topic to topic, breaking down just about every aspect of "I'm sorry" - why it's so difficult for physicians in particular to apologize, what an meaningful apologize entails, what the patient is thinking/feeling in apology-worthy situations, how to build more authentic relationships with patients, and even what exact words you could say in difficult situations.
Overall, doctors should apologize appropriately (and probably more often)- it's the right thing to do, it's the compassionate thing to do, and if that's not enough, it might even prevent some lawsuits.
I'm just sorry that I didn't read this book sooner.
