At the beginning of this slim polemic, Peggy Noonan states that she does not hate the first lady, she merely has contempt for her, and in The Case Against Hillary Clinton she explains precisely why. Noonan's objections to Hillary Clinton and her husband ("to understand her you have to understand him") are based both on ideology and style--Noonan considers the Clintons to be self-involved know-it-alls who "stand for one thing: maximum and uninterrupted power for the Clintons." "They have made the American political landscape a lower and lesser thing," she writes. "They have stopped good things from happening, and have allowed bad things to occur; when caught they have covered up and dissembled." Noonan describes Hillary's bid for a Senate seat in a state not her own as "a thing of utter and breathtaking gall." She further dismisses Mrs. Clinton's ability to lead at all, citing the botched health-care initiative, Filegate, Travelgate, and chronic lying by both of the Clintons as evidence. Perhaps Noonan's most persuasive argument against Hillary is that, although she has been in a position to do much good, she has accomplished little on her own: "I am often frustrated with her because she could do some real good, and at a crucial time, and doesn't.... I can't think of a single time in seven years that she jeopardized her position with her base to make progress for her country."

A speechwriter for Ronald Reagan who chronicled her own White House experiences in the book What I Saw at the Revolution, Noonan exercises plenty of creative license in these pages, mostly effectively by inventing dialogue, events, and inner thoughts that serve to illustrate Mrs. Clinton's motives and character as Noonan sees them. And the author notes, as have others, that Mrs. Clinton's Senate race is likely just a first step on the road to the White House: "So New York is the battle that may decide the war. This Senate bid has huge implications, not only for New York State but for the nation," she writes. In all, a persuasive case elegantly presented. --Linda Killian

Book Description

As the long, scandal-ridden trial of the Clinton years comes to an end--and as the first lady mounts her own campaign for independent political office--it is time for a summation. What is the legacy of Clintonism? What is there in Hillary Clinton's background, talents, or record of achievement that qualifies her to represent New York in the U.S. Senate? And, most important, what will happen if Hillary should win this fall? Where will her ambition lead her next?

Peggy Noonan, one of our most astute political observers and a speechwriter for the Reagan White House, argues in this passionate and compelling book that everyone in the United States--not just New Yorkers--must look closely at Hillary and the implications of her Senate bid. The Case Against Hillary Clinton offers an eye-opening assessment of the scandals, and failures of the Clinton years, from Whitewater to health care to the Filegate and Travelgate affairs--casting a revealing light on the first lady's motives and behavior. It poses searching questions about the difference between the citizens of New York and the Clintons of Arkansas; between public service and lip service; between the whole truth and the shameless parade of evasion and spin the first couple has marshaled throughout their White House years. And finally, in these pages Noonan calls on us to consider the climate of deception and disgrace the Clintons have left in their wake--weakening our nation's moral standing and damaging our political process in ways that will take years to heal.

Never before has the character of a first lady been so integral to the fate of a presidential administration and no writer before Peggy Noonan has had the courage to offer so uncompromising an estimation of Hillary Clinton as the one contained in this book. The Case Against Hillary Clinton takes the measure of the woman, the candidate, the striving politician--and offers a convincing argument that her calculated bid for power will be the first truly important election of the new millennium.

I thought, seven years ago, that the Clintons might turn out to be inspiring. They had guts, came from nowhere, were bright and hard-driving; he was educated, credentialed, a political moderate but not a boring one; she appeared to be something new and interesting, a modern woman who operated with confidence in all the circles of the world.... Hillary could have been a strong and encouraging presence, maybe continuing to work in the world as a lawyer, as Cherie Blair has in Great Britain--a judge, working mother, and "first lady" who is everywhere a figure of respect.

What a presidency this would have been. What a legacy they would have left .

What did the Clintons do with their two administrations? They left behind a country more damaged, more removed from its old, rough idealism; a country whose children live in a coarser and more dangerous place; a country whose political life has been distorted and lowered.... And for this reason, for all of these reasons, Clintonism should not be allowed to continue.

And if it is not to continue, the next great battle may prove to be the decisive one, and that is the battle of New York.

-- From The Case Against Hillary Clinton

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Clinton's Character?.......2007-06-11

This is a very short polemic on the character of the former first lady by Reagan speechwriter and author of "What I saw at the revolution" and other works. In this book the writer is alleging that Senator Clinton feels entitled to power, Noonan summarizes her involvement in a number of scandals. So many scandals and a good teflon suit. This book shows once again, as many other do, that Hillary cares about only one thing, Hillary. As with any book about Hillary Clinton, this book conatians some strong language. And is a fast read, so spend an afternoon and read it.

2 out of 5 stars Great Disappointment!.......2007-05-25

I have been a respecter of Peggy Noonan and a Hillary Hater for many years but found the book to be a big disappointment. I wanted more facts to back up my feelings for Hillary, but instead Peggy Noonan's book is filled with speculation about what Hillary and others are thinking at any given moment or situation. It is stricktly a good guess to put into dialoge what is going on in someone else head! And the chapter that was "a dream" clinched it for me! Unexcuseable! I'll keep searching for the info I need.

4 out of 5 stars 'The politics of hate' as expressed by a catty conservative .......2006-02-25

There is nothing quite so delicious as two smart women in a personal catfight, clawing and scratching at each other with a pure vicious spite that frightens any male who thinks they might be serious.

Peggy Noonan is one of those very smart women, a gifted speechwriter who was able to make Ronald Reagan act and sound presidential on occasion. When anyone considers the number of B-movies where Reagan was himself, and the height of his career in 'Bedtime for Bonzo' where he was only upstaged by a monkey, it produces a genuine sadness that Noonan didn't use her talents in Hollywood instead of politics.

It's what makes this book an absolute delight some six years after it was published on April Fool's Day. America was then at peace, with a budget surplus and respect throughout the world -- as Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are still widely respected throughout the world. Noonan may well be the most articulate example of how the politics of hate produces pure incompetence in the White House -- as deftly detailed by President George H. W. Bush's former Treasury official Bruce Bartlett in his 2006 book "Imposter".

One of Noonan's favourite targets is the 'President's Task Force on National Health Care Reform', chaired by Hillary. President Bill Clinton said, "the American people will learn, as the people of Arkansas did, just what a great First Lady they have". Noonan savages it, blasting the secrecy by bureaucrats who shut out the private sector. In the end, about $15 million was spent before "Hillarycare" was dropped.

Okay.

In the current administration, meetings of oil company officials to develop a national energy policy were secret and have remained secret. Plans for the War on Iraq were done in secret, based on fantasies, fictions and foolishness. The drug program for seniors is total confusion, if not quite outright fraud. Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the last tatters of White House competence. Federal domestic spending has gone up 8 percent per year since 2001, a rate of increase not seen since Lyndon Baines Johnson. Instead of compassionate conservative, Bush is a con-man conservative.

It raises the question: Is America better off with an administration that drops a controversial program if it becomes untenable? Or is it better off with an administration that listens to no one and plunges almost alone into quagmires such as the War in Iraq. Hillary's "folly" cost America about $15 million. Bush's "folly" has cost about $260 billion so far, plus $2 billion a month, plus almost 2,300 dead US military personnel.

Is America better off with a president who listens? Or one who doesn't?

This is what makes Noonan's book so worthwhile; it's a wonderful example of the politics of hate, spite, claws and calumny in action. In six years, Hillary has proven herself in the Senate and is now a leading contender for the presidency in 2008. In the same time, despite her vast talents, Noonan has accomplished little of constructive merit or note.

It brings me back to me opening observation, "There is nothing quite so delicious as two smart women in a personal catfight, clawing and scratching." Such vituperation is often based on jealousy of another's blatant superiority, instead of on any issues.

Noonan's talent is elegant, which makes this book delicious. It's timely, because of speculation Hillary may seek the presidency. It's relevant, because it's a perfect example of the "politics of hate" that cripples America. It's poignant, because America is on a slippery slope to insipid irrelevance unless it returns to the politics of optimism and hope so beautifully written in Noonan's speeches for Reagan in the 1980s.

2 out of 5 stars Another One-sided Partisan Attack.......2005-11-17

Or is it just personal (because of jealousy)? Its hard to judge emotion from the pages of a short book. Peggy was infamous for her support or Reagan and his lies (even if he was a senile puppet).
You should consider the source. Although I am not from NY, I wouldn't vote for a person who was put in office as part of the deal to cover-up the "accidental death" of JFK Jr (IMHO).

1 out of 5 stars partisan politics.......2005-03-24

Noonan has lost all of her credibility. I had hoped to read a thoughtful and well-written piece of work. Unfortunately, this book reeks of hate and partisan politics run a muck. No one admires cheap shots--not even a conservative.

Book Description

With the Bush era now in lame–duck mode in Washington, all eyes are turning to the 2008 political season–especially those of Democratic voters and machers, who were disappointed in John Kerry's uninspired performance and are casting about for a more galvanizing leader to help them win back the White House.

And in that role, argues longtime Democratic strategist Susan Estrich, no candidate even touches Hillary Rodham Clinton, the senator from New York. As Estrich demonstrates, there is no one in the Democratic Party who is as popular as Hillary. There is no one Democrats, and some independents, would trust more in the White House. Both a passionate spokesperson for liberal values and a strong advocate for our troops overseas, she has used her time in the Senate to establish herself successfully as a genuine political powerhouse. And she offers Democrats a once–in–a–lifetime chance to break the White House glass ceiling and be the first party ever to elect a female president of the United States. In an atmosphere where conservative Hillary–bashing is still as virulent as ever, Estrich argues that there's a reason that this principled Democrat still blows away any other potential contender in the early polls for 2008–and that if she should succeed it would be a very good thing for America and the world.

With the Bush administration now in its final years, all eyes are turning to the 2008 political season -- especially those of Democratic voters, who are casting about for a galvanizing leader to help them win back the White House.

And in that role, argues longtime political strategist Susan Estrich, no candidate even approaches the power and promise of Hillary Rodham Clinton, the senator from New York. She is, by far, not only the most popular Democratic leader in the country, but also one of its most popular and admired politicians, period. Both a passionate spokesperson for progressive values and a strong advocate for our troops overseas, she has used her time in the Senate to establish herself successfully as a genuine political powerhouse. There is no candidate whose election would bring such vitality and lasting change into the White House. And she offers Americans a once-in-a-lifetime chance to break the world's most prominent glass ceiling and elect a female president of the United States.

In an atmosphere where conservative Hillary-bashing is still as virulent as ever, Estrich demonstrates all the reasons that this principled leader still blows away any other potential contender in the early polls for 2008. And, with arguments both stirring and sensible, she reminds us that if Hillary should succeed, America and the world would be changed forever and for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Estrich makes her case well.......2007-09-18

If I ever had any doubts about supporting Hillary Rodham Clinton for President, this book dispelled any such notions. When I first read the book over a year ago, I was impressed with the manner in which Estrich 'makes the case' for Hillary's superior intellect making her a great choice. Now that I have heard so many say that when watching the debates they notice that Hillary appears to be the smartest of the Democratic candidates, I am reminded of Estrich's book. I bought five extra copies to give to friends!

1 out of 5 stars We Might Be Doomed.......2007-02-08

Wasn't one Clinton enough to drag this country through their muddy, messy lives?

It was Hillary's people who were misusing FBI files of their enemies during Bill's term of shame. It was Hillary who spearheaded the campaign to silence all the women groped, dishevelled or worse by her husband when those scandals erupted. It was Hillary who, unelected, mind you, tried to make the US government seize the health care community.

And now she's running for president herself? God help us all.

Susan Estrich has been a Clinton lapdog since Monica, tirelessly defending the indefensible for these people. She may resort to dressing up like Ann Coulter to sell books (and failing miserably on both counts) and Hillary may earn acting accolades for trying to sound like a hawk-like centrist...but DO NOT BUY IT.
This plan has been festering in the shadows for decades.

Just repeating that recent history is nothing but "lies" when most of the Clintons' deeds are on file, on tape, on video will not make them all go away. They're going to have to send more than Sandy Berger out to hide their sordid history in time for '08.

Would I vote for a woman as president? Yes. Just not THIS one!

5 out of 5 stars The Case for Hillary Clinton.......2007-02-06

Harvard educated lawyer and politically saavy Susan Estrich knows how to build a case. She has written a well researched and very readable book that proves her point: Senator Clinton is the best qualified and most electable candidate running for president in the 2008 election. Anyone who is interested in the outcome of the next presidentiel election will find this book insightful. It is noteworthy, as Estrich points out with specific quotes, that while Democrats seem skeptical, Republicans who have worked with Hillary Clinton understand her abilities and political appeal and believe she is well qualified to hold the highest office in the land.

3 out of 5 stars It really won't change any minds.......2007-02-04

I'm surprised considering the recent publication of this book, and its now very relevant subject matter, that it isn't read more. I got my copy used dirt cheap. I am a liberal independent. I have on rare occasions voted for Republicans, but my politics tend to be left of center. Thus, you'd think this book would grab me and make me change my mind - it didn't. The author writes like an attorney defending Ms. Clinton in court. As they say in law school, "When the law is against you, argue the facts. When the facts are against you, argue the law. When both are against you, pound the podium." Seems like there's much podium pounding going on in this book.

My problems with Ms. Clinton are as follows - she takes us all as fools ("I've always been a Yankee fan"), feels like she's much smarter than all of us, and does not think that the unjust disposition of a few little people that get in her way (White House Travel Office e.g.) really matters in the grand scheme of things. These are all serious character flaws - character flaws not addressed in this book, and character flaws that make me not want Ms. Clinton to be President. Nothing brings out character flaws like the pressures of the Presidency, and if Ms. Clinton becomes the first woman president she may also be the last for years to come because of this. This is the opposite of the author's prediction.

As for the state of Ms. Clinton's marriage, contrary to the author's opinion, I don't care what kind of personal life she has. I know few people that really do. It is obvious to everyone that Bill and Hillary have an arranged power-sharing agreement - just don't try to pull my leg about this to the point of amputation. Again, this just goes back to Hillary believing she is smarter than everyone else.

If Ms. Clinton is nominated, as is highly possible in a political age where he/she who has the most cash on hand wins, I don't know what I'll do in 2008. If Rudy Guiliani wins the Republican nomination, he's probably got my vote. But more than likely, if the recent past is any judge, the Republican nominee will be a Puritan straight off the back of a Dutch Master's cigar box that I will find equally unpalatable. I'm really pulling for Senator Obama. He may not have the experience Ms. Clinton has, but he has character. Experience can be learned, character is either there or it isn't.

I would say that if you have time, this book is interesting. Just don't expect it to come close to answering the tough questions. That is why I am giving it three stars.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling text.......2006-08-12

I am a registered member of the Democrat Party and must say this is quite an amazing book on the possiblity of the junior senator from New York securing the nominee and win in 2008. The only Democrat First Lady I have ever lived under happens to be Senator Clinton so for her to win the presidency and get our country to give the reigns of power to a woman for a change shall be as compelling as the thought of the most powerful country finally choosing a woman to lead for an effective change. To me, it is high time for a woman to be the President of the United States and for many months now, I have been thinking about this dream coming true for a dedicated Democrat like Senator Clinton. Thanks to Susan Estrich for providing some thoughtful commentary on an issue that raises many questions for the American people and what we all can do to relive the glory that was the Clinton name from 3/20/93 to 3/20/01. This country could learn a thing or two by having a woman create a positive change for the free world and bring about peace, prosperity, promise, and hope to the American people. May America shine again as a beacon for all nations across the world and provide enough social, economic, and psychological welfare for all humans as well as make human rights a duty for everyone and not a problem.

Book Description

Patrick S. Halley has had politics in his blood since he was a high school senior. But his life changed with a phone call in 1992 and an offer to work as a campaign advance man, setting up publicity and appearances for Hillary Rodham Clinton, then a presidential candidate's wife, a "secondary" in advance-man parlance. Little did he know that by saying yes, he would embark on a ten-year roller-coaster ride through the American political landscape.

On the Road with Hillary takes readers from President Clinton's successful 1992 presidential bid through two terms in the White House and Hillary Clinton's own victorious run for the Senate in 2000. Through Halley, the reader sees Hillary's multifaceted, sometimes misunderstood persona and often hilarious behind-the-scenes episodes. Filled with tidbits that only an advance man could know, trips to exotic locales across the globe, anecdotes involving who's who in recent Democratic history, and personal encounters with everyone from Fidel Castro to Ronald Reagan to Nelson Mandela, this is the ultimate book for political junkies and all of Hillary's admirers and detractors.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Read, Author clearly a hard core Hillary fan........2004-07-15

I purchased this book so that I could learn what being on the "Advance Staff" was all about. Also I wanted to read something from the perspective of a relatively unknown staffer, one that wasn't being either touted or persecuted by the mainstream media. (Prior to this book I'd never heard of the author, though he apparently was on O'Reillys show.) In general, the book was interesting, though at times I thought it a quite partisan, and often came away with the feeling that the author had more than an employee/employer interest in Mrs. Clinton. (Maybe a bit of a crush on FLOTUS there Mr. Halley??) For that reason, I tended to take some of the book with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars Hillary Rocks!!!.......2002-11-02

Patrick S. Halley's book On the Road with Hillary is a terrific, rollicking, fun read. For Hillary fans, political junkies, or just folks who want to know what really goes on behind the scenes, this is a great book.
I'm not a political junkie but I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed it...Halley is a great story teller, and he tells a story as if you were in his favorite pub in Boston, with him regaling you with tales of a trip just completed, laughing over a glass of his favorite potion, Guinness stout.
Halley is one of the pople that set up appearances for political figures. He prepares successful appearances for Hillary all over the country, from isolated rural college campuses to big city parades and fund raisers. He visits umpteen countries, suffering the hardships of dining in Paris and visiting the poorest places in the world, including Mother Teresa's orphanage in Calcutta. Through it all he never loses the pinch me sense of wonder of a working class kid who makes it good on his native talents but still can't believe his good fortune.
One of the best parts of the book is getting to look at Mrs. Clinton as a real human being. Halley is an unabashed Hillary lover, and he is right up front about that. The thing I liked though is the book does show her as a real flesh and blood human being, and not the one dimensional figure we get through the media at times.
Halley has a real talent for finding trouble and then getting out of it, usually in a daring and funny way. Some of his best stories are about how he wound up buck naked in the lobby of Tokyo's finest hotel, in a losing test of wills with an enraged yak, and in a shoving match with President Clinton while an aghast Mrs. Clinton looked on. But everyone will have a different favorite from this book.
So Hillary bashers, down a quart of maalox and loosen up a bit! But for Hillary lovers, Hillary neutrals, people who like politics, or just people who like fun, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Honest.......2002-09-27

Just finished this book. I found it to be a very honest account of Mrs. Clinton. A must read. I've always found it amusing that all the Clinton "haters" out there buy the books and read them!Interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Another Clinton stooge publishes a book.......2002-09-16

Mr Halley is simply a stooge for the Clintons; he is their response to Drudge they hate so much for having first revealed the Lewinsky story; needless to say, Drudge is as a disgusting a character as anyone trying to balance out his role in the media at the behest of the Clintons who know no limits so far as manipulating public response to their doings is concerned;
nice try, Mr Halley--put on a cap instead of Drudge's stupid hat and make a few bucks along the way...

There is always a possibility that your stalwart support of Senator Clinton (D-New York)will yield a second-tier position in the future Clinton II administration.

4 out of 5 stars Some books on politics aren't just political hype........2002-09-13

I saw an interview with Patrick Halley on the Fox News O'Reilly Factor and Halley convinced me to read this book -- just by being needled by O'Reilly.

He's an undistinguished seeming man -- could be a Secret Service Agent and blend into the crowd.

His voice has an even timbre, and his eyes are steady and true. He wasn't nervous - showed every sign of being an experienced public speaker.

I believed every word he said - and it wasn't really much more than you've read in the cover blurb or the amazon reviews above. It wasn't just that he said he first signed on to be Hillary's front man because she's (quoting here from his own words in that interview - which I scribbled down as he spoke) "really different." It was the way he said it. Matter of fact. Not really trying to convince you that she's "different" -- but explaining why he ditched his whole life to go on the road with a political figure knowing full well what he was getting into. He wouldn't have done that for most any other political figure. But Hillary wasn't like the others -and after one small taste of what it would be like working for Hillary, he wanted to work for her.

Now, personally, I have little use for Hillary. As a writer, both fiction (put my name into the amazon search slot to see a list)and nonfiction (Biblical Tarot and Star Trek Lives! also available here), I have listened to her speeches and watched her delivery. She presents herself as I would present a character of mine that I didn't want anyone to believe.

So I watched this interview with Halley very, very closely. I have never seen anyone else say such positive things about Hillary in such a convincing way. Living in New York, I did see a lot of Hillary - and a lot of coverage on her. What Halley was seeing was very different from what I had seen.

You could read the book a dozen times and still not be convinced the impression Halley says he had gotten of her is true -- after all, anyone can type words onto paper, craft and hone them until they seem sincere. Halley could just be looking for another job -- or he might have been paid to say nice things about Hillary because nobody else wants to. But I was convinced he meant it.

He might be wrong, but I think he believed every word.

When probed about Hillary's response to the eruption of scandal, Halley said, "She's a very strong person (...) she realized it was important to carry on with the Clinton Agenda."

He saw her as committed to Bill and Bill to her.

It didn't sound like a coverup to me.

Asked about how he could guarantee the crowds the press wanted to see at Hillary's appearances, -- did he pay people to show up and hold signs? Halley said that he never paid people to show up and hold signs, but he did pay for the buses.

He went out of his way to make the point that the bussed in crowd was there mostly for the convenience of the press -- so they'd be sure they could get their shot and make their deadlines.

He said that the Press is the prism through which people are viewed, and he seemed to consider that it was his job to give them a clear view of Hillary to pass on to the Nation.

When asked at the end of the interview if she will run for the Presidency, he answered with perfect politician's aplomb that he hopes she will run.

That was the only point where I felt there was some more to be said that he wasn't saying.

Read this book -- if she plans to run as we all expect she does, this book will be the first advance campaign gambit.

People should also read this book if they don't yet know the difference between what a candidate says from the podium and what is really happening. If you don't understand politics as show-business (something I learned about while traveling to collect material for Star Trek Lives!) you really need to read this book.

If you already understand what politics really is, and politicians never fool you, then you don't have to read this book, but you should remember that Halley - who worked with Hillary under the most trying circumstances, thinks she is a steady and strong person.

What would she have done if she were sitting in the Oval Office when the Twin Towers came down?

I think that's the question this book is giving you the material to answer for yourself.

Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

With the Bush era now in lame-duck mode in Washington, all eyes are turning to the 2008 political season-especially those of Democratic voters and machers, who were disappointed in John Kerry's uninspired performance and are casting about for a more galvanizing leader to help them win back the White House. And she offers Democrats a once-in-a-lifetime chance to break the White House glass ceiling and be the first party ever to elect a female president of the United States. In an atmosphere where conservative Hillary-bashing is still as virulent as ever, Estrich argues that there's a reason that this principled Democrat still blows away any other potential contender in the early polls for 2008-and that if she should succeed it would be a very good thing for America and the world.
