5 out of 5 stars Good for an Intro to Govt course.......2005-10-08

Anyone starting out in undergrad Political science should read this textbook, articles deal with current issues and can provide for lively discussion.

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Have an Opinion--and Then There's the Other Guy.......2004-09-14

This is an excellent series. The arguments and counter-arguments have been put together very well. Sure, I disagree with at least 50%, but the fun is in seeing each side make a valid point (and get demolished by the other side!). The editors, Feingold & McKenna, have consistently done a good job with this series. Worth buying just for fun, and invaluable if you are a student (enrolled or otherwise) of Political Science!

4 out of 5 stars Taking Sides: I'll Take the Whole Book!.......2003-04-25

This series of books is a must for anyone interested in modern political thought. It is as interesting as "Crossfire" with more substance and depth. The editors' political experience shows in the selection of authors and pieces chosen. Though I'm sure the editors have their own opinions, both sides of each issue are well represented. They have carefully culled differing points of view from intelligent people who make their arguments persuasively. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars no straw dummies.......2007-07-28

The timely nature of the book's topics is one of its strengths. The book just came out, and its many of its topics can be seen in the daily newspapers. Consider one issue - are continued US sanctions on Cuba justified? The pro and con are briefly covered, but quite succinctly. Another topic asks whether membership in the World Trade Organisation is beneficial.

The book's debate format helps crystallise its topics. And the editor has skilfully recruited eloquent writers to debate both sides of each topic. No straw dummies here. A good pedagogic format that should hold the student's attention.

I had to read this for a class and just looking at the cover makes me ill. The topics are timely but the material is outdated.

      5 out of 5 stars Taking Sides.......2006-03-01

This book is full of great views pertaining to both sides of global issues. By having both opinions and views and facts used in this book you can make your own choices on what you belive to be fact and what our future holds concering overpopulation, global warming, and shortages of food. It is making my global class easier to follow and helps me define my opinions before discussion in class.
Thank you for your quick (sooner than expected) delivery. It was in time for class.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read with Problems.......2005-08-19

Taking Sides is an excellent series. Each book contains a series of debates on the given topic. These normally take the form below.

      1. 2-3 page introduction and background material
      2. 'Yes' argument in favor of question
      3. 'No' argument against question
      4. 1-2 page concluding remarks with recommended additional reading

I love the style, and it gives a great sense of the different views on the topic.

However, this book also has some problems. First, the introduction is not impartial. For example, one of the introductions said that one of the debaters made a 'dubious' claim. However correct this assertation may be, I don't think it holds any place in the introduction for a debate.

A second problem was the source material for the debates. Some were lifted directly from a live debate, with no editing. Reading a speech that is often conducted on the fly is among the most difficult things one can do. Some of the debates refer to the debater showing graphs. However, the graphs are not provided in Taking Sides! In addition, one of the debates was out of order. When the debate occurred, the 'no' argument went first. However, in Taking Sides, the 'yes' argument is presented first. Therefore, the reader must wade through references to a speech they have yet to read!

Although it does have some problems, they are fortunately limited to only about 3/5 of the arguments--therefore the three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking it over.......2003-09-29

This series of books, "Taking Sides", are great for anyone who wants different perspectives on the controversial issues of today. I bought this book for a Political Science class. I found myself reading the book from cover to cover. The book gives several different topics. There is usually an introduction to the topic and two different essays written about the topic, one for and one against. It is organized in an easy to read format. I highly recommend this book and I would recommend trying some of the other books in the "Taking Sides" series.

If you like Carl Hiaasen books, you'll probably like "To Kill a Common Loon", though this book has a style of its own. The beauty and specialness of the Pacific Northwest Olympic peninsula is engrained in the story and the story line is good. It is a book that is hard to put down. It is the author's first novel - I hope it is not long before he writes another!

5 out of 5 stars Loved the book, but not the DVD.......2007-01-03

The text and photos in this book are excellent, so I highly recommend the book. BUT the accompanying DVD "Loons, Lakes & Mist", which I was very much looking forward to, was a big disappointment. Yes, the live loon webcam captures the loons in special situations. However the constant, loud, pounding, music is all wrong as background for any film about loons. You want quiet, so you can hear the call of the loon. You can turn off the sound, which I suggest you do, but then there is no call of the loon.

5 out of 5 stars Clarity of Call of the Loon.......2006-08-06

I have been giving public nature talks on loons for years and I find Call of the Loon the best researched,up to date source yet. The beautiful photographs illustrate the loon data so the book appeals to all ages. I recommend it daily in my talks.

Judy McIntyre is one of the world's authorities on loons. This book reflects not only the wealth of her technical knowledge about loons (written in a very readable style!) but also personal glimpses into the lives of loons from someone who has spent years studying them in their natural environment AND in captivity. It's a fascinating read!

              4 out of 5 stars A Haunting Call.......2004-09-27

Anyone who has heard the call of a loon on a lake at night is bound to be impressed by these birds. This book is full of pictures of loons, with some supporting discussion, and a CD of loon calls.

The book describes and defines loons, including how to find them, their family life, their calls, how to photograph them and loon conservation. The pictures in the book were taken by the late Bill Silliker, Jr., who was a famous wildlife photographer, and the book is clearly a vehicle for his work. Many of Silliker's pictures are first rate and quite striking, especially considering the difficulties of photographing a bird whose colors range from the brightest whites to dark, matte black. Sometimes, however, he shoots into the light when trying to record some element of loon behavior (not a deliberate silhouette) and these photographs are less successful. I must also confess that after 100 pages, even though I love loons, the pictures had developed a certain sameness.

The narrative provided was more of the "aren't loons great" type then being very useful. The book told me little more about loons then several pages in Kenn Kaufman's "Lives of North American Birds" or David Allen Sibley's "Guide to Bird Life and Behavior", although it did make clear to me that the reason loons nest on the water's edge is because they find it impossible to walk on land. Although the book notes that there are 5 species of loons in North America, it is devoted only to the common loon. Serious birders may well have to wait for the Oxford University Press to get to the loons in their series on Bird Families of the World for really detailed information.

I was particularly disappointed by the book's discussion of photographing loons. It's clear that most, if not all, of the pictures in this book were taken from a boat. Having done a little bit of avian photography from a kayak, I know that this type of photography requires some different techniques than shooting from terra firma. I would have liked to see some discussion of how to follow the bird photographer's rule about getting close to the ground when you are on water.

Although its clear that the CD of loon calls was an afterthought, (there is no reference to it in the text about the calls of loons,) listening to it is (pardon the pun) a hoot. While I doubt that anyone would ever mistake any loon call for the sound of another animal, filling your den with the call of these ancient birds is thrilling.

In summary, this looks like a good gift book for someone who likes loons and good pictures of them. It certainly is not a thorough reference book.

I have owned this book for many years. It opened my fascination with this most interesting bird. Although it is illustrated rather than having color photographs, the illustrations are excellent. Most important, it is the most informative text I have found before or since. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with a passion and interest in loons.

We live in the Adirondacks, and the book club at my daughter's school read this book. The kids all loved it and it got them interested in protecting the loons on our local lakes! It was a fast read for the kids, and as an adult I enjoyed it as well. Great for anyone who lives or vacations in the North Country.

The main characters in the series are: Justin, Jackie, and Nick. They are adventurous children who go to a camp in the Adirondacks every summer. In this book, the children wanted to save the loons. Once, when they were trying to take a photograph, some jet skiers made big waves and Nick dropped the camera.

You should read this book because it tells you a lot about the Adirondacks. It is a good adventure, too. When you have to stop reading, you are always wondering what is going to happen next.

This book is the first one in a series of three. If you like this adventure, read the others.

We had a visit by the VanRipers today at our elementary school. To prepare our children for the visit, the first chapter book was read aloud to them. They were captivated by every word, had many questions about the contents and couldn't wait to meet the authors.
The ten year olds that I observed were excited to know that settings in the book were actual places they have been (Old Forge) and that a kid their age had actually written a book that they could buy in a book store. Now they are off to meet the challenge of our Principal of writing their own book.
The VanRipers have created a book series with incredible detail, 3 dimensional characters that children can relate to and an enthralling story line that doesn't quite satisfy with one book. As one child put it today; "I felt like I was in the book with Justin all the way"

This series is worth every penny, no matter where you are from.

Thomson's collection of essays on natural science (from "American Scientist") are contemplative, and conversational, cerebral without being difficult, and concerned with ideas, philosophy and language.

Organized in three sections, "The Uses of Diversity," "On Being a Scientist" and "The Future of Evolution," the collection takes a broad perspective.

In the title essay he extrapolates from the pair of loons on his summer lake to the character of a place where loons live, their dwindling numbers and what that could mean to humans, practically and aesthetically. On a drive from Kennedy airport, he muses on our attitude toward land. Two other essays explore the perspectives of earlier scientists.

In the second section he captures the thrill of discovering how sharks swim and dissects the polarizing effect of "reductionism," the practice of ignoring outside influences in scientific disciplines.

Reflections on evolution lead him to explore matters as apparently diverse as the origin of tetrapods and the link between Newton and Darwin.

Thomson offers ruminations rather than anecdotes, he looks at where we've been as well as where we're going and worries about how we're getting there.
