5 out of 5 stars So very few.......2007-01-30

So very few books could boast truly world-changing ideas like this one. The effects of Ghandi's teachings have of course spread far beyond the struggles in South Africa and India to the civil rights movement in the US and more. Non-violence has never been weighed and found wanting, it has been weighed, found difficult and ignored. But, in the end, the way that looks easier, the way of violence, is the truly hard path to follow. What seems the longest road is not necessarily the most difficult to travel. We all need to review Ghandi from time to time and regain that other path away from self-destruction.

5 out of 5 stars concretizes Gandhi's ideas.......2006-10-24

I liked this book because it makes Gandhi's ideas concrete and specific. He talks about how to handle specific situations, and explains his thinking - for example, his view of picketing. Specific examples of how to handle specific situations give you more insight into what non-violent resistence and non-cooperation really mean as applied to real life situations. After reading this book, you have a much better sense of how to apply Gandhi's ideas, versus just an overview of his ideas as abstraction.

4 out of 5 stars WOW, Essential Gandhi!.......2006-06-09

I loved this book from cover to cover. It's an amazing story of one man's non-violent battle against the food-arazzi. Okay, truth be told, I skimmed through the first half but the part where Gandhi went on the hunger strike was a total inspiration to me and my Pro Ana group. Gandhi lived his life just like we do...but he did it first! He knew about the evils of food long before it was popular to say so. He starved so that we may starve too. If you ask me Gandhi was like the American Jesus. I think he wore sandals too!! And that's what make him a REAL American hero!!!

P.S. If you get too hungry you can eat this book. LOL. Kidding. Don't eat ANYTHING! EVER!

I learned a great deal from Mahatma Gandhiji (1869-1948) by reading NON-VIOLENT RESISTANCE. This book is a collection of articles written at the hand of Gandhiji for the magazines "Young India" and "Harijan". In addition, there are some interviews. The term Satyagraha was authored by Gandhiji to describe the process of non-violent resistance. Satyagraha has as its goal reform. It requires a great deal of discipline on the part of the participants. It also requires an opponent that is capable of reform. I have been applying what I have learned from this book in an attempt to reform myself. If you are interested in the life of Mahatma Gandhiji, or in the process of non-violent resistance, this book will be interesting to you.

      Book Description

In the middle of the Mississippi Delta lies rural, black-majority Sunflower County. J. Todd Moye examines the social histories of civil rights and white resistance movements in Sunflower, tracing the development of organizing strategies in separate racial communities over four decades.

Sunflower County was home to both James Eastland, one of the most powerful reactionaries in the U.S. Senate in the twentieth century, and Fannie Lou Hamer, the freedom-fighting sharecropper who rose to national prominence as head of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Sunflower was the birthplace of the Citizens' Council, the white South's pre-eminent anti-civil rights organization, but it was also a hotbed of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) organizing and a fountainhead of freedom culture.

Using extensive oral history interviews and archival research, Moye situates the struggle for democracy in Sunflower County within the context of national developments in the civil rights movement. Arguing that the civil rights movement cannot be understood as a national monolith, Moye reframes it as the accumulation of thousands of local movements, each with specific goals and strategies. By continuing the analysis into the 1980s, Let the People Decide pushes the boundaries of conventional periodization, recognizing the full extent of the civil rights movement.

5 out of 5 stars Good 'ol Sunflower County.......2006-03-15

"Understand Mississippi, and you understand the world." William Faulkner ... And he was so right. What's so good about Todd Moye's book is that he provides the needed clarity to understand this microcosm in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Moye's research is excellent; this is particularly note worthy since it is not easy to find such information in the Delta. Mississippi's libraries - public and educational - are notorious for their dearth of newer Mississippi books. (Forget the archives.) So thanks to Moye for providing this unique piece of history that needs and deserves attention and preservation.

5 out of 5 stars New Southern History.......2005-11-25

Todd Moye has written an excellent book about the civil rights movement in the Mississippi Delta. The power of the book lies in its simple prose and nuanced analysis, a rare combination in historical nonfiction today. The storytelling will pull readers into the book and the analysis will change the way many readers think about the civil rights movement, not just in Mississippi but across the South.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read.......2005-02-26

The book is focused on the freedom movements in a specific time and place, but I think it gives insight into how similar movements evolve elsewhere. It is definately a scholarly work, and the author footnotes many of his own oral history interviews as source material. Yet the author's prose is not stuffy, and you don't feel like you are doing homework while reading this engaging book. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in our nation's history, especially in the evolution of civil rights movements in the south.

      5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2004-11-19

_Let the People Decide_ is the best historical perspective on Mississippi I've read since _Rising Tide_. And I'm not just saying that because J. Todd Moye is my brother.

      Book Description

What became of the Gandhian tradition in India following the death of Mahatma Gandhi? Did it quietly die away? Or were there still Indians who believed in his philosophy and methods, committed to continuing his work?

These were the questions that sent journalist Mark Shepard to India in 1978-79, where he found that the tradition begun by Gandhi was very much alive in such individuals, groups, and movements as:

-- an acclaimed saint who collected over four million acres in gifts of land for the poor

-- a leader of a nationwide protest movement that helped topple India's ruling party in the mid-1970s

-- a Peace Army that fought riots with nonviolence

-- a "Hug the Trees!" movement that physically blocked excessive logging in the Himalayas

-- a People's Court that even tried cases of murder and government corruption

-- a development center that was helping 400 villages rise from poverty

-- a nationwide movement of villages in which all land was held in common and decisions were made by unanimous consent

5 out of 5 stars Living Proof that Gandhi's ideas live on.......2004-04-30

I grew up and was educated in India with little knowledge or understanding of Gandhi life, work, and deep international influence. My teachers, most of whom were Christians, looked down on what they considered Gandhi's unsophisticated ways.

College in India was no better than school, with the exception of a gentle Physics professor who introduced me to Gandhi's ideas on Economics. I went on to study Gandhi's ideas more closely, read his autobiography, and most recently came upon this book. Reading it has made me very very happy!

Mark Shepard has done a wonderful job visiting with, interviewing, and summarizing the efforts of Gandhian activists in India (with a last chapter taking a quick look at activities of Gandhians worldwide). Whether it is the Peace Army preventing religious riots, or the New Dawn community pooling resources and getting rid of moneylenders and other abusers of authority, each account brilliantly and vividly informs and inspires.

      Great reading!

accurate, and discerning appreciation of Gandhi's significant and often compelling contribution to the 20th century and the future.

                            Book Description

For the thousands of local birdwatchers and the many hundreds of visitors, this glove compartment-sized book places all the excitement and opportunity of the Delaware Valley's 335 species of birds within convenient reach. Huge in coverage yet compact in size, Birding the Delaware Valley Region is the first comprehensive bird-finding guide available for the region.

With detailed directions like "behind the airport," "follow the shabby road off to the left," and "lock the car and walk the railroad tracks," this exuberant handbook tells the birder exactly how to get to the best locations and what to do when he's there. In addition to providing maps showing topographical outlines, it surveys key areas (all within a two-hour drive of Philadelphia) where most of the region's birds can be found: Hawk Mountain, Cape May Point State Park, Ridley Creek State Park, Tinicum Marsh, Brigantine National Wildlife refuge, and Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

Mini-chapters discuss additional birding "hot spots" famous for great numbers of migrants, and short references to another thirty "spots" round out the regions' bird refuges to more than seventy. Simple cross-checking can be done with the annotated list, the list of accidental or casual species, the bibliography, and the index located at the end of the guide. Every question the visitor might ask and the native might wonder about is answered concisely and fully.

                            Book Description

Delaware’s location in the mid-Atlantic region on the Atlantic flyway, as well as the geologic evolution of Delaware’s Piedmont and Coastal Plain, have resulted in a great variety of bird life—virtually all species regularly encountered in the East. Birds of Delaware is the first comprehensive book on birds in the state, containing accounts of 418 species, and the first state book to integrate breeding bird atlas survey results with all other available information on a state’s wild birds. Destined to be a definitive reference work for years to come, Birds of Delaware includes innovative graphic presentations on breeding and seasonal distribution, relative abundance of species, nesting season, and winter population changes. Primarily concerned with species accounts for breeding birds, migrants, and rare visitors.

                            5 out of 5 stars The best says it's great--I agree!.......2001-02-01

Chan Robbins (an eminent U.S. government ornithologist) says, "this handsome volume is required reading for all Delaware birders...and will be of great interest to ornithologists in other states and countries." Dr. Frank Gill (senior VP of Audubon) says with confidence that this book sets new standards for state bird books and its delicious, scholarly species accounts are rich in detailed analyses of status and trends. The Midwest Book Review say, "this seminal, ground-breaking, comprehensive reference featuring 418 species of birds is the result of over 30 years of dedicated, observational research that will prove invaluable to ornithologists, birdwatchers, and wildlife enthusiasts." They have it all right! I've read my copy all the way through. It's attractive, readable, accurate, complete, informative, interesting and fun. It would be valuable for anyone interested in birds who lives from Connecticut south to the Carolinas and west to the Mississippi River, because those states share the same species of birds found in Delaware. As an outstanding reference book, it belongs in every birder's collection where ever you live--here in the states or in other countries. Buy it for yourself and give copies to your friends.

I have one of these guides for every state I visit. I love them, and rarely if ever spot a bird that isn't included. It is small and light, so you can carry it everywhere. I will keep buying them as I travel.
