Book Description

Written by a distinguished group of comparativists, this innovative and accessible introductory text surveys 12 key countries organized according to their level of political development: established democracies, transitional democracies, and non-democracies. The country studies illuminate four comparative themes in a global context: the world of states, examining the interaction of states within the international order; governing the economy, covering the role of the state in economic management; the democratic idea, discussing the pressure for more democracy and the challenges of democratization; and the politics of collective identities, studying the political impact of diverse attachments and sources of group identity.

The theoretical framework developed in an expanded introduction provides a rich context for each country study, and clear prose makes the book accessible to students with little or no background in political science. Students will also benefit from the data sheet at the beginning of each chapter that includes basic demographic, socioeconomic, and political information, to aid in country comparisons. In addition, they can use the Geographic Setting sections in each chapter, as well as maps, tables, charts, photographs, and political cartoons to further their understanding of each country studied.

4 out of 5 stars Iran is misclassified.......2005-08-21

The authors give an impressive critique of the political systems in several countries. The book has several parts. The first is the major democracies, with a chapter for each of the US, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and India. It is commendable that India is put into this group, as befits the world's largest democracy.

Another part describes the developing democracies, where the word developing is used in preference to imperfect, perhaps. But that's being too cynical. Anyhow, the countries covered are Russia, Brazil, Nigeria and Mexico.

The last part of the book is about the non-democracies. Iran is put into this category. But surely this is a misclassification. Iran has had several elections in 20 years, with competing political parties and changes of national government. The elections were with universal suffrage, with women having the vote, and a woman's vote is weighted the same as a man's. In the Middle East, this is no small thing. Certainly, the chapter on Iran describes many flaws in its government. But is it any worse than Nigeria? Others have said that in the Middle East, there are only two democracies, Israel and Iran.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of World Politics papers.......2007-01-12

It is one of the most comprehensive and exhaustive IR books a proffesional, academic or student, can have. I recommend it without any doubt.

3 out of 5 stars Good organization but disappointing content.......2005-03-12

The organization of the work is excellent and many of the chapters (including those written by John Baylis) were clear, concise, and easy for a graduate class to follow. Unfortunately, other selections in the work are diffuse, rambling, or awkwardly-written. Moreover, despite an attempt to provide a balanced perspective on whether globalization is actually occurring, the work tends to support the globalization argument without providing strong evidence. Baylis' brilliant initial chapter actually presents a plausible case against globalization. Finally, despite the importance of nationalist and religious-based ideologies in motivating transnational behavior, these concepts receive less coverage than, for example, feminist theories. I had to construct an entire unit on Christian and Islamic principles of transnational relations from supplementary materials. Although I might assign Baylis' first chapter as required reading, the quality of the writing in the remaining 400+ pages is too inconsistent to be a good text.

4 out of 5 stars Great piece of academic work.......2003-04-07

This book helped me understand my initial international relations module at college. It is concise, informative and provides detailed analysis of key issues, and sets out typologies on how best to understand international issues.

5 out of 5 stars I belive it is fantastic.......2002-07-17

I'm a master degree student from Colombia. I was searching an international relations book focused in globalization matters and I found it. It is very clear, easy to understand. I'm very happy to pourchased it. I recommend you !

3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2001-12-11

Not to bad. It's a bit difficult to follow, but goes into pretty good detail.

In his book, Danziger does an excellent job in portraying the political world. One might argue that this is essentially what any other book on political science would do, and this true. However, Danziger manages to apply his own personal style to the work. His explanations are clear, and to the point. One of the major features of the book are the "boxes" that appear every so often. These usually contain real life issues, or historical events that demonstrate what is trying to be taught. All in all, James N. Danziger's book is an informative, and well text on the political science.

    Book Description

This mainstream text for introductory political science course familiarizes students with the discipline by taking a comparative approach to topics such as the nature of politics, political institutions, behavior, and ideologies. The main theme of the text has shifted from a state-centered emphasis on interdependence to a broader look at globalization and the role of non-governmental actors, such as multinational corporations and transnational organizations like the U.N.

The Fifth Edition reflects changes in the discipline and an increased emphasis on globalization and the political economy. Part 1, "The Work of Political Science in the Era of Globalization," introduces the book's theme; Part 2, "Shaping Political Thought," describes the ideology and culture of politics; Part 3, "Acting in Politics," focuses on the roles of individuals, groups, and parties both nationally and internationally; Part 4, "Governing Nation States," describes national institutions and the political processes; and Part 5, "Governing the World," explains international and regional governments and international political economy.

Although written more than twenty years ago, Linz's theory is applicable to countries and events today, often with dead-on accuracy. His writting is scholarly, yet understandable. It provides an insightful look inside the political processes of a crumbling democracy, and more than answers the question "What makes Democracy fall apart?"

          Book Description

This thematic introduction to comparative politics, framed around and driven by the concept of "the good society," emphasizes institutions, draws on the United States for some of its comparisons, and includes a unique assortment of case studies -- touching on a range of countries from rich democracies to less-developed states -- to make abstract concepts concrete.

The book's normative approach is a bold departure from other books as it examines political systems and measures them against the yardstick of a "good society." Utilizing the "capability approach," developed by scholars Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, they outline in their first chapter the qualities of a good society. The authors then compare and evaluate postindustrial democracies in the West, less-developed countries, and communist and post-communist countries against this standard. Not only do the authors thoroughly examine the performance of different countries against the criteria of the good society, but they explain why some countries are better than others at creating one.

          Book Description

Systematic, coherent, and user friendly, this decidedly nontraditional introduction to comparative politics is designed to teach students how to think comparatively and theoretically about the world they live in.

The core of the book is organized around a set of critical questions—why are poor countries poor? why is East Asia rich? what makes a democracy? what makes a terrorist? what makes a social movement?—each the topic of a full chapter. These issue chapters are based on the solid methodological and theoretical foundation laid out in the first part of the book. Graphics and definition boxes enhance the text.

Doing Comparative Politics will stimulate your students to critically engage with both the content and the methods of the field.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Comparative Politics.......2006-09-11

This was the textbook in my first comparative politics class. My experiecne can tell you that Doing Comparative Politics is definitely one of the best introductory textbooks in the field of comparative politics in terms of theories, methods, and their application.

Encompassing all three major traditions of comparative politics, i.e., rational choice theory, structuralism, and culturalism, Lim offers us tools enough to begin comparative analysis on our own. He further explains how to use standard comparative methods, such as the most similar systems design and the most different systems design. This allows us to control for confounding factors.

All these theories and methods make much more sense in his application to particular issues, like democratization, terrorism, and others. You can actually see how to use all these theories and methods in analyzing on-going political issues!! This allowed me to produce a 40-page research paper on democratization, which I used as a writing sample in applying to Ph.D programs in political science.

All in all, this is a must reading for anyone who is interested in comparative politics. Had it not been for this book, I would have not been a Ph.D. student in political science.
