5 out of 5 stars Not for ideologues.......2005-10-11

This book gives an excellent background on the politics of Hamas, its origins and the forces pulling it in different directions (both from within and outside). Sober analysis based primarily on the statements issued by Hamas itself and interviews with its political leaders. Unfortunately, because of when the book was written and published, it does not cover the impact of the 2nd intifada on Hamas (especially the assassinations of Ahmad Yasin and `Abd al-`Aziz al-Rantisi). Furthermore, one of my complaints is that at several times footnotes indicate that we can find the full text of certain statements of communiques in the Arabic version of the book -- however, one can imagine that these documents would be more useful in the English-language version of the book, since once can presumably find them more easily in Arabic (the source language) than translated into English. This is just a small gripe, though, and in general the book was thorough and compelling and, though sober and analytical, not overly academic in tone (i.e., it was pretty easy to read).

If you want to read sensationalized stories about suicide bombings and the like, this isn't the book for you. If you want to try to understand why Hamas is an ascendent force in Palestinian social and political life, then this is a great resource.

u know, it ammazes me how people think that it is OK to humiliate Islam and prophet Mohammed PBUH and call him a terrorist!!!! The person who said that in the comment that was posted on Oct.17.2002 is a racist obviously and deserves to go to hell for saying that. It is everyones right to have an opinion about any subject, and i believe in free speech, but what was said by that reader was intorralable. That air headed racist doesnt know what he is talking about, and I think that amazon.com should be sued for posting such an offinsive remark by that racist SOB.

If you are looking for a book that will give you a better understanding of how the dark and confused underworld of anti-Israeli, anti-American and anti-West thinks and acts, this is a good book. It will give you a solid basic outline of the origins of Hamas, how it grew, how it's leaders think, and where Hamas fits in the spectrum of "anti-Zionist" organizations.

The author has a plodding writing style, not unlike that found in political science textbooks, but for the truly interested, there is enough grist to keep the mill of reading going steadily.

As an American, and as a person who believes that targeting civilians is murder in any armed conflict, this book is hard to read at times. Mr. Hroub declares at the outset of this book that he wrote it to be an impartial analysis of the Hamas movement, but that is a red herring. Mr. Hroub is clearly sypathetic to Hamas and, incredibly, to it's methods. However, if one wants to discover what really goes in inside an organization like Hamas I don't think one can be content with the analysis from people at a distance. To a certain extent, to know a criminal well, one has to become like him. Mr. Hroub knows what he is talking about, sadly.

This book is not excellent. What could be said in two pages is here said in twenty. Moreover, there is hardly anything new in chapters about Hamas relations with PLO or Arab states. I expected a lot more.

    Book Description

In The Palestinian Hamas, Shaul Mishal and Avraham Sela show that, contrary to its violent image, Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement) is essentially a social and political organization, providing extensive community services and responding to political realities through bargaining and power brokering. The authors lift the veil on Hamas's strategic decision-making methods at each of the crucial crossroads it has confronted: the Intifada and the struggle with the PLO, the Oslo accords and the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority, and the choice between absolute jihad against Israel and controlled violence. Now with a new introduction, this book does much to contextualize the current ascendancy of this controversial movement.

      Book Description

The radical Islamist movement Hamas shocked the world when it won a landslide election victory in January 2006 in the Palestinian occupied territories.
One of the few journalists not to be surprised by this outcome was Zaki Chehab who has developed an international reputation as a fearless reporter and was one of the first to interview members the Iraqi resistance in May 2003. Fluent in Arabic, he is a Palestinian refugee who grew up in UN refugee camps and has unique access to and understanding of Hamas.
Like Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon, Chehab shows how Hamas built a formidable social base in Palestine through its welfare programs. He also explains why, in the face of the endless complexities, disappointments and delays brought about by the signing of the Oslo Peace Accord, Hamas's strategy of armed struggle and terrorism offers the Palestinian people a seductive, simple and deadly alternative.

        Book Description

The U.S. views Hamas as a terrorist organisation. Yet, to the great surprise of many, Hamas swept to victory in the 2006 Palestinian Authority elections. Hamas is now a democractically elected political party.

This is the first beginner's guide to this controversial political organisation. Explaining the reasons for Hamas's success, this book provides the key facts that are so often missing from conventional news reports. It's a one-stop guide that gives a clear overview of Hamas's history, key beliefs, and its political agenda.

Written by a leading Al-Jazeera journalist and Cambridge academic, this unique book provides a refreshing perspective that gets to the heart of the reasons behind Hamas's victory.

It provides a critical overview of Hamas's attitudes to Israel, including religious beliefs and suicide bombings, its attitude to the PLO and its programme of grassroots social work within Palestine.

The reality of Hamas's victory means that the West will now have to engage with it more seriously if there is to be peace in the Middle East. This book provides the first essential step towards a better understanding of the challenges and suprises that the future may hold.

        Book Description

Since it emerged as a challenger to the PLO during the Palestinian Intifada, Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement) has been associated in the public mind with terror and violence. Now two Israeli experts show that, contrary to its image, Hamas is essentially a social and political movement, providing extensive community services and responding constantly to political realities through bargaining and power brokering. The authors lift the veil on Hamas's strategic decision-making methods at each of the crucial crossroads it has confronted: the Intifada and the struggle with the PLO, the Oslo accords and the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority, and the dilemmas surrounding the choice between absolute Jihad against Israel versus the option of controlled violence.

        3 out of 5 stars Well-Researched Text.......2007-10-10

This book is full of detailed analysis, though things have changed immensely since it was written (2000), so you are best served by reading its more recent edition. It makes important points, debunking the popular view of Hamas as a rigid organization--while rigid in its views, the organization has had to rely upon adaptability and compromise with the PLO (and hence, indirectly, with Israel) while under PLO leadership. While under PLO domination, Hamas (for the most part) painstakingly avoided confrontation with other Palestinian factions, a principle so important it is decreed at length in the Hamas charter and was constantly reiterated in the faction's propaganda. It is interesting how quickly this fundamental precept has been gruesomely abandoned following Hamas' rise to power. The book also addresses the rift between the organization's "inside" and "outside" leadership, the latter tending to be more radical because it doesn't face the daily realities of occupation. Finally, it emphasizes the fact that Hamas owes most of its popularity to its vast charity work rather than its ideology. One of the most interesting parts is the book's inclusion of the full text Hamas charter, which is striking in its blatant anti-Semitism, extolling the virtues of killing "Jews" (as opposed to just "Zionists") and making frequent reference to wild conspiracy theories and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. While well-researched, the book is written in a dry, academic style, so I would recommend it for people who already have an academic background in the subject rather than those looking for a basic introduction.

3 out of 5 stars Chock Full o' Info but Fails to Achieve its Goal.......2004-05-09

The authors' primary goal is to enlighten those who are predisposed to mass media's portrayal of Hamas as a violent terrorist organization. Their method is reminiscent of the way in which a psychologist would analyze the social and personal problems faced by a serial murderer. Please indulge me for a few moments:

Serial killers face myriad difficulties in trying to reach their goal of murdering numerous people. Prior to the murder, there are serious social and psychological barriers that must be surmounted. Because they must act in secrecy, serial killers often must become reclusive, informing not even family and friends about their whereabouts. This lack of contact with other humans is psychologically painful, as humans are social beings. During the actual act, the murderer must ensure that everything is performed discreetly and that all evidence is destroyed. After the murder, the serial killer suffers because of the tension between guilt and the serious repercussions of being caught.

Regardless of whether that is an accurate assessment of the state of a serial killer, the method of analysis is apparent. Break the subject and its environment down into analytical components. Identify the causal links between the subject's psychology & environment and the subject's actions, before, during, and after the murder. Suddenly, (though done poorly in my above example) one looks at the serial killer not as a crazed fanatic, but rather as a rational being that has desires and constraints and uses discursive methods to maximize satisfaction of those desires and minimize the aggravation of constraints.

The authors of The Palestinian Hamas: Vision, Violence, and Coexistence, take Hamas and attempt to legitimize it as social movement with a humanitarian cause. What is the cause? "A primary aim of Hamas was to establish an Islamic state in the territory of Palestine whose liberation was to be achieved by holy war" (50). Ok, so what if Israel decides to cede all of it's territory at the negotiating table, except for, let's say, one town: "Hamas thus adopted the principle contained in the PLO's National Charter of 1968, which defined armed struggle as 'a strategy and not a tactic,' in order to preclude the possibility of a negotiated settlement...Because to forgo parts of Palestine was tantmount to forgoin part of Islam, Palestine as a whole could be liberated only by armed struggle." A strategy and not a tactic--war was not a means to an end--war was an END IN ITSELF!

Later, Mishal and Sela discuss the political problems faced by Hamas as they were under pressure from the popular secular-nationalist PLO to stop their combatant behavior. The authors title chapters, "Controlled Violence," "Coexistence [with the PLO/PA] Within Conflict," which describe the political, economic, and social difficulties Hamas had with maintaining their doctrine of the militant liberation of Palestine. Additionally, Hamas gave a significant amount of welfare aid to the Palestinian community. Hamas certainly gives aid to the people because it cares about their well-being, right?

"Hamas decided that it had to maintain its coexistence with the palestinian authrotiy. The rationale for this was clear. An all-out confrontation would bolster the movement's principles and militant image but risk its freedom of action and possibly its very existence. More dangrous yet, it could erode hamas's ability to underwrite social and economic services for the community, regarded as crucial to maintaining its popularity" (103). Like any political group, Hamas acted to ensure that it maintained its popularity. Again, this is a logical step for Hamas to take; it would be logical for any group trying to mobilize its constituents to be supportive. However, the point is that a group's having political sensibility is not an argument for the group's normative acceptance as a humanitarian movement.

They somehow believe that, by showing that Hamas had problems achieving their goals like any other social movement, this somehow delegitimizes the media's portrayal of them as a violent terrorist group. Perhaps the media has not focused on the institutional problems faced by Hamas; it has not focused on welfare provided to the Palestinian community; it has not focused on the difficulty of maintaining jihad doctrine in an environment that is unfavorable to its reception...

But is it really not sensible for the media to look askance at a group whose use of violence is not a means to an end but is an end itself? We're sure Charles Manson had his reasons for doing what he did...we just don't care.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, yet biased.......2004-02-10

Though this is possibly one of the best written works on HAMAS in existence, it certainly is biased with respect to the authors' ideology. Often, it seems as if the authors are attempting to question the credibility of the movement and its leaders while taking shots at them. If you "read between the lines" then you will gain some insight into the precarious situation that the Palestinian Authority faces and why civil war will erupt if the PA takes action against militant organizations such as HAMAS. The complex interplay between politics and religion is also covered in depth, and the flexibility of the HAMAS movement is astounding, especially how the group was able to survive after the Oslo Accords. While the length of this book is somewhat short, it is comprehensive and is good research material if you wish to gain an understanding of a complex situation.

4 out of 5 stars Hamas - continuing Palestinian resistance.......2002-02-19

As Hamas has grown in influence within Palestinian society and has taken the lead in the organised physical resistance to the Israeli occupation, any book that is able to provide an objective analysis of the movement, its goals and tactics is to be much welcomed.

What emerges from this account is a fascinating picture of a complex organisation, which continues to operate in a much more adaptive and pragmatic manner than might be expected by those who see Hamas only as it commonly portrayed in the Western media - hardline, fundamentalist, uncompromising.

The reality is far more complex, as Mishal and Sela show. The details concerning Hamas's internal agonising over whether to participate in the Palestinian elections is an enthralling and detailed example of the different forces at play within Hamas and the sometimes conflicting agendas of the various parts of its leadership.

They also make clear that Hamas is primarily about nationalism and resistance to occupation, rather than a part of some global Islamic movement. Its struggle is strictly defined with the borders of Palestine and has no interest in wider Islamic issues.

What a pity therefore that such an interesting subject and one that the authors clearly know well, should be marred by such stilted and jargon ridden prose. The book clearly suffers from having been written buy two authors with quite different styles. The first and last thirds are fairly painful to read, while the middle section flows reasonably well and carries the reader along. One or both authors has something of an obsession with the use of the word "normative" and sprinkles it liberally throughout. Towards the end of the book I counted six successive paragraphs each of which contained the word, which shows both poor style and bad editing.

One curious aspect of the book is that the authors make little of the fact (although they don't dispute it either) that Israel originally encouraged and facilitated the development and growth of what became Hamas, in order to provide a counterweight to the PLO and to try and divide the Palestinians and thereby deny the PLO its claim to be the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. I was at BirZeit University (the leading Palestinian university in the Occupied Territories) when the Israelis helped bus in `militants' from the Islamic University in Gaza who then attacked students who were aligned with Fatah and the PLO.

It's a startling irony that the Israelis now bombard the Palestinian Authority for failing to `control' a resistance movement that Israel helped to create in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for the initiated.......2002-02-02

For those who have some knowledge of the background of the conflict in the Middle East - this is an excellent read. It is essentially a book which is aimed more at the Middle Eastern Studies student. However, if like me, you are someone who is not one of the latter but who wants to know more - then read some basic background information first and then head into this book. I found it an accessable read and very interesting. Whilst at times I found it a little confusing with its references to peace agreements and events - that was down to my lack of background reading rather than the book itself. Having now read several books on the conflict I will certainly go back to this book to make the most of the information and conclusions it holds.

It achieves what it sets out to do - and that is to reflect the true nature of Hamas - not just as an organization with a reputation for violence, but as an organization which has serious social, educational and religios concerns within Palestinian society. It shows the way in which the organization has adapted to the political changes and certainly gave me much to think about.

When Cardinal Hume died in June 1999, many people from very different backgrounds felt that Great Britain had lost a holy and special man. He was a spiritual leader not only admired and respected, but also loved.

In CARDINAL HUME: A SPIRITUAL COMPANION, we are given the opportunity to journey alongside this man of God. The book offers reflections and meditations for the seasons of the Christian year, beginning with Lent and Easter, then moving through Pentecost and on to Advent and Christmas. We can follow the year through, or dip into the text at any time.

In these pages we find words of understanding, encouragement, and hope--words that speak to us whatever our condition, whatever our beliefs.

                      Book Description

On his death in 1999, the London Times observed: “Few churchmen in this century, inside or outside the Catholic Church, have died more deeply loved.” Basil Hume’s 23-year reign brought with it a state of harmony within the Catholic Church that hadn’t been enjoyed for four centuries. A deeply holy man, Hume knew at an early age the path he wanted to follow, but it was never an easy journey. Ultimately, however, nothing could deter his dedication to that in which he believed, including his tireless campaign on behalf of the Maguire Seven and the Guildford Four. Granted unique access to Cardinal Hume’s private papers and the people who knew him best, Anthony Howard chronicles Hume’s long reign with clarity and insight.

4 out of 5 stars Practical monastic wisdom.......2006-12-23

The Intentional Life is a selection of short talks given in the 1960s and 70s by a Benedictine abbot to the monks in his charge, on the topic of living their monastic vocation... as though the reader were a fly on the wall in the monks' Chapter Room. It begins with a talk on "man and God" and one on "the monastic instinct," followed by monastic formation talks to novices, to monks making their simple and solemn professions, to monks becoming priests, talks given on the occasion of renewal of vows, and finally talks about monastic work--for instance Ampleforth Abbey ran a boys' school.

Benedictine life is profoundly about being in community, and these monks blend contemplative and active life in a way that is somewhat relatable for people living "in the world," though indeed with an emphatic intentionality and discipline (through vows, rule, obedience, schedule, etc). A good monk chooses this life freely and lives it with love and integrity. The guidance given in the book is of a practical and exhortive nature. It is about the ordinary fabric of the monk's life--full commitment, humility, the great importance of prayer, obedience and keeping one's vows and rule of life, etc.

"The Intentional Life" is not a basic explanation of life at the monastery nor is it soaring mysticism. And it isn't written specifically to make monastic wisdom relevent and interesting for laypeople. But thoughtful readers serious about deepening their spiritual lives through greater whole-life commitment may find some very human yet soulful insights into what works for that and why and how.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful, resonant and useful read.......2006-08-20

This is a great book for those seeking insights into their personal vocations. Hume addresses a Benedictine novice in this book but many of the lessons that he speaks of can be applied to other walks in life, including married life and the single life. Clearly this is most relevant to a R.C. audience but I think others can read and relate to most of it without too much difficulty. His style is personable and conversational -- uncommon for authors of his caliber.

                          Book Description

Arising out of a game of `hide-and-seek' that Cardinal Hume played many years ago with two young children, Basil in Blunderland is a book to enchant and inspire.

On the day the children invited him to play with them, he had not meditated, and as a monk he was required to do half an hour of mental prayer each day. How, he wondered, could he play hide-and-seek and, at the same time, meditate? As the book unfolds we see how each hiding place in fact became a place to pray and how each suggested thoughts about the spiritual life.

With characteristic humility, Cardinal Hume ventures the title Basil in Blunderland because, he says, his life has much more often been a wandering in Blunderland than a resting and relaxing in Wonderland. He has written a very personal book of profound simplicity that will help all of us make sense of our blundering and searching after God. It is a book for everyone, young or old, believer or agnostic. Few readers will fail to gain encouragement and help from the wisdom in its pages.

George Basil Hume,O.S.B., of blessed memory, was a prince among men long before he was mad a "prince" of the Roman Church. These refelctions, given as mostly homilies{sermons] during, but not exclusively, Holy Week, are broken into 3 sections 1:Embracing mystery 2:Inner Peace 3:Celebrating mystery. Hume was singular among churchmen of his elevation in his common touch{owing somewhat to his benedictine training},and had a gift of speaking plainly. As he was also slwoly dying of cancer, these meditations are therefor more poingnant. He is especially good on the centrality of the cross, which, then makes this all the more appropriate during lent. A good book from a great man.

Basil Hume (d.1999)lived as a Cardinal of the Church, but lived at the grassroots. His real humility is very evident in this book and in his words. He has an extraordinary capacity to communicate the Gospel message in simple and evocative ways that touched ordinary hearts -- like mine. This book is an essential companion for anyone on the journey that leads to God, and for me, it has been the "good news" about God's love for us, the heart of the Christian message and mission.
