Book Description
While heated arguments between practitioners of qualitative and quantitative research have begun to test the very integrity of the social sciences, Gary King, Robert Keohane, and Sidney Verba have produced a farsighted and timely book that promises to sharpen and strengthen a wide range of research performed in this field. These leading scholars, each representing diverse academic traditions, have developed a unified approach to valid descriptive and causal inference in qualitative research, where numerical measurement is either impossible or undesirable. Their book demonstrates that the same logic of inference underlies both good quantitative and good qualitative research designs, and their approach applies equally to each.
Providing precepts intended to stimulate and discipline thought, the authors explore issues related to framing research questions, measuring the accuracy of data and uncertainty of empirical inferences, discovering causal effects, and generally improving qualitative research. Among the specific topics they address are interpretation and inference, comparative case studies, constructing causal theories, dependent and explanatory variables, the limits of random selection, selection bias, and errors in measurement. Mathematical notation is occasionally used to clarify concepts, but no prior knowledge of mathematics or statistics is assumed. The unified logic of inference that this book explicates will be enormously useful to qualitative researchers of all traditions and substantive fields.

Qualitative quality.......2007-09-03
A lot of the other reviews give great insight into what this book is and isn't.
I simply want to say that this book is excellent as a guide to what an optimal qualitative reasearch design should be, if it is to be as valid and reliable as possible. Qualitative research seems like a "haven" for researchers that want to follow their "heart" or "feelings", and this book contends unscientific research in a way that surely offends many of these researchers. Not that feelings should be excluded, it's just that the design must be more than a subjective view presented as research, and this book will help, even if you don't agree with everything they say.
All the advantages and disadvantages of statistical reasoning applied to qualitative political science.......2006-01-29
This book takes the basic logic of statistical inference and applies it to qualitative research design in political science. As several reviewers note, it is not a book on statistics, nor indeed does it pretend to be. However, it extends the logic of statistical research design into nonquantitative research.
That much it does very well. By thinking about how to test hypotheses and how to increase variation in a qualitative research design, it has been very influential. Most important, it has sparked extensive criticism, modifying and delineating its claims.
The book has some amusing flaws. Most of the examples come from the authors' colleagues and graduate students at Harvard, which suggests either that good research is not done by people without that connection or that the authors don't read anything written by people who don't have an office down the hall. The two non-quantitative coauthors have both done extensive qualitative research that demonstrably violates the advice given here--both before and after this book. This is evidence that the advice is hard to follow, that they have not read the book, or that good scholars take other factors into consideration when designing research.
The last hypothesis is in fact the right one. There are many factors that go into good research design, and positivistic hypothesis testing provides only a few. Even many of the examples they give are less appropriate than appears at first glance, addressing evidence that goes well beyond what this book's advice would be.
In short, don't rely on this as a bible. Don't believe its claims that all good research must meet these standards. Still, it's a good handbook for what it seeks to accomplish.
This not a stats book.......2005-10-17
This is a response to reviewers who think this is a stat book. This book is not meant to serve as a stats textbook (if you want one there are plenty of good ones written by statisticians and econometricians). This book is designed to serve as a guide to research design in social science in terms of developing a question, following systematic research procedures and measurement while using qualitative research methods. In that regard it does not do a great job as they are stuck up with applying simplistic statistical techniques (predominantly regression analysis)to qualitative methodology. As a result the work ends up appearing weak to both the statistically inclined (including myself) and those who use predominantly qualitative methods. Arguably the biggest problems with this work is in their treatment of constant dependent variable designs. This arises from their notion of a "causal effect" that is quite different from what qualitative researchers might see as causality. In statistical terms their notion is correct but when we move towards a qualitative interpretation of the same the concept becomes problematic primarily because it is difficult to discern the appropriate differentation between values of the dependent variable in qualitative work.
Nonetheless, this book should be treated on its own terms for attempting to synthesize quantiative and qualitative research methods. This book started a controversy that continues till this day and did a great job in forcing people to actually think more deeply about their research design and methods.
If you want to study statistics or econometrics forget this book (choose what you want to know about....regression analysis, time-series models, bayesian models....your choice). If you want to study qualitative research well read this book but then read Brady and Collier 2002 and George and Bennett 2004. George and Bennett's work is arguably the best book on research design I have ever read.
Absolute Dross.......2005-09-29
Please spare yourself the pointless meanderings through what should be simple statistical techniques and buy a real statistics book.
KKV.......2005-09-25
KKV is the book behind the excellent paper by Gerardo L. Munck entitled Canons of Research Design in Qualitative Analysis [Studies in Comparative Literature, Vol. 33, No. 3 (Fall 1998), p. 18-45].
The book has the details although it is harder to read than Munck's excellent paper. This is a must read for all doing Qualitative Research.

Book Description
A majestic bird swoops down, snatches its prey, then soars into the clouds. It is a bald eagle, one of North America's largest hunting birds.
For centuries the bald eagle has been a symbol of majesty, strength, and freedom. In 1782 it became the official emblem of the United States. Yet now this fierce hunter is in danger of extinction.
Gail Gibbons's thoroughly researched text and dramatic illustrations present the bald eagle in all its grandeur- hunting, courting, nesting, and hatching- with fascinating facts and statistics about this remarkable winged predator and the efforts to save it.

Great Teaching Tool with Gorgeous Illustations.......1999-07-30
I used this book as the basis for a program on eagles prepared for children ages 5-9. The book provides lots of accurate facts about the eagle, its habitat requirements and how we can insure its viability. The illustrations are wonderful and enhance the technical story of the eagle being told by Gail Gibbons. I will use this book again for my own children and for programs focusing on eagles for the early elementary school age kids to learn about our eagle population on the James River.

Customer Reviews:
Give me book three, these books keep getting better!.......2003-01-13
I LOVED Walks The Fire, and so I rushed out to get Soaring Eagle, and I'm really glad I did. I liked it ever better than the first book in the series! I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the third book, Red Bird, and can't wait to get my hands on it either. Whitson is one of the best, if not the best, Christian Historical Fiction authors out there!
Even Surpasses "Walks The Fire"!.......2001-03-06
First of all, if you haven't read "Walks The Fire", you really need to read that first or you will be lost with "Soaring Eagle".
Soaring Eagle, the adopted son of Jesse "Walks The Fire" King and half sister of Jesse's daughter Lisbeth, discovers that in a battle with the White man he has killed his sister's husband. This story follows Soaring Eagle and Lisbeth in their journey to forgiveness; Soaring Eagle and Lisbeth each discover the faith of Walks The Fire, and Lisbeth learns to love again.
Once I began this book I absolutely HAD to finish it, reading it in meetings, at work, even in the bathroom. This one has everything -- tragedy, action, romance -- you'll love it!
Have Tissues Nearby.......2000-05-25
I never expected Soaring Eagle to be better than Walks the Fire, but it was! I was totally caught up in the physical and spiritual journey of Soaring Eagle. His struggle to admit his connection to not only white people, but also to Christians, was enthralling. To add even more drama, Whitson has Soaring Eagle interact with Lisbeth's husband in a secondary plotline that will keep you spellbound. Normally I am not an emotional person, and I was actually sobbing out loud by the time that I read the last word of Soaring Eagle. I am a prolific reader of Christian fiction, and Whitson far outclasses her more well-known counterpart Lori Wick. The Prairie Winds and Keepsake Legacies series are likewise far above anything that I have read by Oke, Wick, Glover, or Peart (and I have read them all). My only complaint is that Whitson is not writing them fast enough!
Beautifully interwoven story!.......2000-05-23
Even better than Walks the Fire (which was great), Soaring Eagle is a spellbinding story of God's grace and human need. You have to stay with this one until the end. Everything comes together as pieces of a puzzle. Beautiful!
LizBeth meets Soaring Eagle her brother - can she forgive?.......2000-04-13
When I left off with Whitson's first book in this series "Walks the Fire" I was hoping book 2 would be as good. I was not disappointed. It was even more exciting! Jessie King is dead, LisBeth her daughter has just lost her husband in the Indian war, and now she seeks some meaning to life. In mourning, she finds she is too bitter to accept the faith of her mother. Soaring Eagle is fighting a battle of the cultures. He is an Indian who is forced to act like a white man. He refuses their God. Jim Callaway is a career soldier who had seen and done such horrendous things that he deserts the army, running, and ends up in Lincoln, Nebraska near LisBeth and smithy, Joseph. David Braddock is introduced in this book and as rich as he is, he cannot convince LisBeth to end her mourning and court him. So many changes in the town's people occur, the most outstanding being when the daughter of the town gossip accepts the call to an Indian mission school. There she meets Soaring Eagle and Carrie, a little white girl who is the only one who can reach into the heart and soul of Soaring Eagle. Soaring Eagle wears the gold cross which Jessie, his dead white stepmother wore, and a locket with the pictures of his mother and an unidentified woman...his sister whom he has never seen? LizBeth has nightmares about an Indian riding the plains with HER husband's locket around his neck. The interaction of LizBeth and Soaring Eagle is spell-binding and puts the reader heading straight into book 3, Red Bird.
Book Description

And when the handsome warrior enters her dream -- one more passionate and intense than any she has ever experienced -- Kali awakens to find that her world has been changed forever.
Soaring Eagle trusts no white man -- or woman -- and was hoping the beautiful stranger would leave the reservation once his tribe refused her request to photograph them. Now the spirits have spoken, wedding him in a powerful night vision to this stiff-willed enchantress with moonlight dancing off her golden-red hair, uniting them for all eternity. But their fiery, foretold love goes against all they each believe in -- and it is doomed to end in heartbreak
unless their two worlds can somehow become one.

SOARING EAGLE'S EMBRACE.......2007-05-07
I REALLY ENJOY ALL HER BOOKS AND THIS WAS A REALLY GREAT ONE
Very Good Native American Historical.......2003-08-04
Setting - Montana Mountains 1895 - Kali Wallace and her father, a noted historical author, have come to the Blackfoot reservation in the Montana mountains for more research on the native American peoples and for Kali, whose photographs accompany the text. However, as the Indians have a fear of being photographed - stemming from gossip that the photo steals their spirit - Kali must use her charm to convince the Chiefs that she would bring them no harm. Their Indian guide, Gilda, (a female) convinces both Kali and her father to accompany her up to Chiefs Mountain to see a spectacular sunrise. Gilda spins a tale of lost love and spirits before everyone settles down for the night. Kali, promptly fell asleep but was awakened during the night by someone singing. Following the sounds she comes upon the sight of a most magnificent Indian warrior. There eyes meet, he holds out a fan of feathers, she touches and is overcome and runs away.
The following days, the government Indian Agent arranges a presentation for Kali and her father, to meet the chiefs promising to use his influence to arrange permission for Kali to photograph. Naturally, during the presentations she spies the handsome warrior, only he is giving her looks as if he despised her. Not knowing what she had done she manages to speak to him and finds he trusts `no white persons'. Kali finagles a way to get him to accompany her to take some photos the next day, whereby the attraction that is smoldering seems to ignite after a stampede that has Soaring Eagle first saving her life, then after the stampede and the ranchers who caused it show up - Kali manages to save his life.
The plot is relatively light with Soaring Eagle whose deep spiritual beliefs allow him to recognize the spirits at work bringing them together is able to readily confess his feelings. Kali, on the other hand, fights the attraction, denies her feelings and comes up with the very plausible and plain facts of the impossibility of their situation until a mysterious photograph she didn't take shows up. The romance of Soaring Eagle and Kali sharing the same dream in which the spirit world marries them is very powerful and deeply moving with supernatural overtones, rich in Indian lore and historical facts and very sensual. If not for the inconsistencies I felt in some of the dialogs I might have rated this a little higher for I truly did enjoy the story and most definitely recommend it to those readers who find this American Indian genre to their liking.
A fascinating paranormal historical romance.......2003-07-02
In 1895, Kali Wallace and her father come to Montana to photograph Indians. However, the local tribe seems uninterested in posing though one warrior Soaring Eagle goes so far as to scorn the two whites. However, as Soaring Eagle becomes better acquainted with the idealistic naïve Kali, he finds to his disbelief he is quite attracted to her.
As they sleep apart, Soaring Eagle and Kali share the same dream in which the spirit world marries them. She denies it, but he is elated because he realizes that he loves her. As Kali begins to accept the reality of the shared dream, she knows she loves Soaring Eagle, but realizes nothing can come of their relationship as she is a globetrotting photographer and his people need him here in Montana.
The latest Karen Kay Legendary Warrior tale (see WAR CLOUD'S PASSION and LONE ARROW'S PRIDE is a fascinating paranormal historical romance. Readers will find fascinating the depths that Ms. Kay plunges her audience into a close look at Indian spiritualism. Soaring Eagle is a delightful male lead as he quickly changes from antagonist to protagonist. On the other hand, it is frustrating is that the lead female spends much of the tale in denial until a photograph persuades her to reconsider. Still sub-genre fans will embrace this soaring novel.

Book Description
An in-depth look at ASM Pacific Technology, the world's top company in the semiconductor assembly and packaging equipment industry. Started in Hong Kong thirty years ago, it had to face many unfavorable conditions for high-tech in Asia (such as the lack of infrastructure and resources), the volatility of its industry, and severe competitions from companies in the U.S., Europe, and Japan throughout its history. Nevertheless, it maintained profitability for all thirty years, grew organically and consistently, and today is significantly larger than any of its competitors.
This book reviews the history of ASM's growth, examines its success from differentiated strategies, leadership and culture, innovative practices, technologies and products. The management lessons along these dimensions are also explored in detail. The book also covers Asian-specific context, such as the establishment of an advanced manufacturing operation in mainland China, and explains its unique culture, challenges, and opportunities.

Young Reader's Adventure.......2001-09-27
Ms. Finley writes of the American Southwest in this tale of a young man searching for his true identity. His encounters and new friends will amaze and entertain you to the last page. The author is a native of the locals of the story and it is evident that she has researched her subject matter. Historical fiction at its best.

Learning to Soar.......2002-11-21
Mary Whelchel has shared some spiritual gems in this book. It was a delight to read and each chapter challenged me in more ways than one. Using the eagle as a guide in this book allowed Mary to effectively get her message across. I have a new-found respect for those majestic birds and will never look at them the same way. All Christians will find this book enlightening and I guarantee you will walk away with at least one new piece of knowledge on eagles. More importantly, you will be spiritually uplifted and encouraged.

'Many have thought that Keynes's Memoir made unnecessary the writing of a biography of Alfred Marshall. How wrong they were. Professor Groenewegen's meticulous research has given us a very different (and more accurate) picture of Alfred Marshall's life. Everyone interested in the development of modern economics will gain immensely from reading this biography.' - Ronald Coase, Nobel Laureate in Economics 1991
