Book Description

Outraged over the mounting Social Security debt, Cassandra Devine, a charismatic 29-year-old blogger and member of Generation Whatever, incites massive cultural warfare when she politely suggests that Baby Boomers be given government incentives to kill themselves by age 75. Her modest proposal catches fire with millions of citizens, chief among them "an ambitious senator seeking the presidency." With the help of Washington's greatest spin doctor, the blogger and the politician try to ride the issue of euthanasia for Boomers (called "transitioning") all the way to the White House, over the objections of the Religious Right, and of course, the Baby Boomers, who are deeply offended by demonstrations on the golf courses of their retirementresorts.

5 out of 5 stars Oderint Dum Metuant.......2007-09-18

It means "let them hate so long as they fear". It is a needlepoint pillow in one of the main character's mother's living room. This book is a scream. Very, very funny, very prescient, better than "Smoking". the antagonists (there are no protagonists) are kind of insane, and just believable enough. The plot is genius: the day comes when everybody starts to retire at once. The economy groans while younger people turn out in violent demonstrations against the boomers. Various wacko solutions are offered - but are they really wacko? Look for details in 10 years. As usual Buckley - our own Thomas Swift - is just a half step ahead of the headlines. And like the man said, "all great ideas begin as a joke". Run get it.

3 out of 5 stars Would rather be "Smoking".......2007-09-07

"Thank You for Smoking" was the first book of Buckley's that I read. While it wasn't a 5-star - it was laugh out loud funny in parts and right on the money in others. (The part with the nicotine patches had me in tears.) But this one - while constructed on a VERY novel and potentially funny way to deal with the Social Security crisis was nowhere near the caliber of TYFS. (Speaking of which - some of the acronyms he made up for the ridiculous groups and agencies were pretty good but after a while....zzzzzz.)

Plus - every single character turned out to be a dud - not one of them was either pure satirical evil or Stepford Wife angelic - just a rather dull dishwater grey. I will buy Buckley's next book - but probably not with the same sense of glee that I bought this one.

4 out of 5 stars Watch out Baby Boomers.......2007-08-30

This is a great comic novel that is both clever and funny. This is the first book I've read of Buckley's, but it certainly won't be the last. The political satire is cutting and very funny. Buckley doesn't spare anyone. Unlike most comic novels, Boomsday isn't a comedy of errors as much as it's a comedy of spin.

Media spin, the way it controls everything the see and hear and read in the media is the central theme of the book. It is this spin that takes a red-bull fueled comment on a popular blog through the political process and debated on the Senate floor.

It's a good story, very clever and worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road for Buckley.......2007-08-26

There are two things you can always count on from Mr. Buckley: spot on political satires and unlikely but thought provoking plots.

This book follows Buckley's standard formula: A heroine who is up against the higher ups in DC who has a flawed hero with a heart of gold helping her out. Surround with outrageous caricatures and crazy situations, and let the reader enjoy the ride.

From the beginning, the action is fast and furious. It doesn't let up until the last page. In this book, Buckley skewers baby boomers' entitlement mentality, pork barrel politics, religious leaders, and blogging. It sounds like an amalgam, and it is a testament that Buckley can tie all of this together and have a fun and riveting story come out.

I really enjoyed this book. It's not as good as White House Mess or Florence of Arabia, but miles ahead of many so-called humorous novels.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-08-23

Buckley's wit and imagination are delightfully, irrreverently outrageous, but "reality-based" as only one who knows Washington D.C. can be. The Nuncio and the Evangalist scene is sublime. This is the best comedic yarn of "DC" since O'Rourke's "Parliment of Whores".

Book Description

CIA operative Mitch Rapp follows a trail of contract killers leading directly to the heart of our nation's capital in New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn's eighth explosive thriller.

It's a gorgeous autumn day in Georgetown. The Democratic candidates for president and vice president of the United States are dutifully glad-handing voters and the media outside a grand estate where a national security conference has just been held, bringing together the world's greatest minds to discuss the issues that are threatening the country. It's American politicking at its best. That's when all hell breaks loose.

When presidential candidate Josh Alexander's motorcade is ambushed by a group of terrorists, the nation is thrown into turmoil. Two weeks following the attack, Alexander is carried to victory by a sympathy vote, but his assailants have not been found. On the surface it appears to be the work of al-Qaeda, despite the tremendous job that the U.S. and her allies have done eliminating terrorist cells within the heart of America. While the FBI and the rest of the government begin scouring the world for jihadists, CIA director Irene Kennedy and Special Agent Skip McMahon are presented with classified information so toxic that they consider destroying it altogether, as it contains intelligence pointing to some of the most powerful players in Washington.

Enter Mitch Rapp, the one man reckless enough to follow the evidence to its explosive conclusion. His journey takes him through the shadowy world of contract killers, into the darkest corners of the globe, and eventually back to Washington, where the fragile pillars of power are shaken to their core.

4 out of 5 stars Move over Jack Ryan.......2007-10-07

If you are thinking about venturing into this spy series you may as well start from the beginning. Mitch Rapp is an exciting character and his exploits over the years are page turning. Start at the beginning and read in order for the best roller coaster.

2 out of 5 stars Weakest of Flynn's Novels.......2007-09-17

I have enjoyed Flynn's novels since Term Limits, but I hate to admit that I think this was his weakest moment. The story seemed to be put together too fast, and the characters would appear extremely one dimensional if a reader had not read the previous Mitch Rapp novels. Here, Rapp appears as a stereotypical gung-ho "do things my way" agent with little or no thought process. While he was always anti-politician, Flynn drills it into the reader's head at every opportunity.

While the twist of who the terrorists are is a nice departure, the bad guys also did not have much depth. Of course Flynn always makes his politicians the most unsavory characters, (and in his previous efforts it is usually enjoyable) but the characters in Act of Treason are way too cookie cutter, even for Flynn.

The ending sealed the deal for me, which I thought extremely unrealistic and a fantastic departure of the usual rationalism Flynn evokes; the ending seemed to be the least thought out segment of the book. Disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Mitch Rapp Novel.......2007-09-03

Vince Flynn has done it again with another amazing Mitch Rapp Novel. Act of Treason like the other's would make a great movie, however it would be too realistic and cause the American people to truly see how corrupt our own government really is. Thanks Vince Flynn

5 out of 5 stars Rapp is the man!.......2007-08-31

You see a news story involving a corrupt politician, known terrorist, or murderer getting candy-coated treatment - your immediate thought is "why can't someone just take this guy out back and deal with him?". If you sometimes have the itch to skip the formalities and skip straight to the "justice" in due process, then Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp is a man need to know.

I picked up the first book in this series a couple of years ago and have since waited for new releases with the same anticipation I used to have for Tom Clancy to share the latest Jack Ryan/John Clark exploits. Who knows at this point whether Clancy will ever give us another in that series, but in the meantime the Rapp character is filling a void for me. Flynn's writing is crisp and fast-moving, allows you to put yourself in Rapp's shoes and thought process and, as noted, satisfies your internal need to sometimes "just deal with the problem". Compared to Clancy's characters, Rapp is definitely more Clark, and Flynn skips the multi-layered plots and techno-thriller language and moves straight to the action. The closest character comparison I see for Rapp is Jack Bauer on "24", which probably explains why Flynn has been involved on story-line development for recent seasons of "24". I could easily see Flynn's efforts one day turning into a series of Rapp movies in the Bourne vein - interestingly, there now seems to be some chatter about doing just that.

For me, Flynn is one of the few writers who make me say "just one more chapter" before hitting the sack or taking care of chores. I think "Act of Treason" is another solid effort in the Rapp series and very satisfying for a Rapp devotee, but will be much more enjoyable to a new Flynn reader if you go back and pick the series up from the beginning to see how the character has been developed over the first seven books (see FAQ's at [...] for the chronological order).

4 out of 5 stars Keeps moving.......2007-08-28

Corridors of Power as seen from the third cubicle on the left.

Nice simplistic plot and characters. Good guys are good, bad guys are evil, sexually perverted, and probably vote Democrat. No ambiguity. Good guys get to kill the bad guys, exercising god-like powers of assassination. That evil NY Times gets its comeuppance too.

Really, its good because Flynn is a good writer. Even his filler, descriptions of DC neighborhoods, thoughts and bios of irrelevant characters, etc. are unobtrusive, I even read a few.

First, but probably not the last of the series I will read.

When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan

5 out of 5 stars How one can rule them all with power........2007-10-14

Published in 1532, dedicated to Lorenzo de' Medici, The Prince by Machiavelli is an advanced political science treatise in defence of civilization against barbarianism by way of a single specially disciplined sovereign ruler, a prince.

The Prince by Machiavelli is a brief but complex political management system designed to be run by a prince administered using a series of protocols for any given situation based on Machiavelli's interpretation of the history of the rise and fall of world governments with an emphasis on the Roman Empire and current trends in 16th century monarchy rule.

Machiavelli's analysis of the historical record paved the way for princes to develop awareness of the problem of emergent barbarianism both internal and external. Machiavelli highlighted the need for a prince to always remain liked but indicated that being wanted did not necessarily mean being kind and showed how a cruel prince could also be beneficial to the state which would function, sometimes better, under ruthlessness depending on certain conditions.

Machiavelli was able to successfully understand the different types of principalities and how princes come to power and how they could retain that power tactically. He often cited historical sources to prove his points. The Prince teaches how to acquire cities and how they should be ruled especially after being annexed. In this respect it is also a war treatise although it deals with gain by means other than war. However this is not unusual for a warfare discourse. There are methods of determining strength and calculating a response and so The Prince is a strategic book that has its bases in game theory. The different types of soldiers and how they behave is given a considerable amount of coverage and how a prince should treat them.

The character of a prince becomes a central theme especially concerning how a prince is to be perceived by others. Religion is dealt with and for its time The Prince surprisingly declared Popes potential enemies that could, and would, undermine a monarchy if it was to their advantage. Machiavelli was able to show how a fortress is important for defence but that attack can, and does, come from within. He also had a system to increase a prince's popularity and noted areas in which a prince could socially falter. The book rounds up with a directive to implement these ideas when fortune should arise and to be always on guard against barbarianism which can come from within.

The Prince remains a classic essential in the development of game theory. There are many parallels between this work and the Art of War by Sun Tzu. In fact Machiavelli wrote another book using that very same title. Machiavelli sees power brought into the grasp of one hand by adapting military tactics internally within government operations as opposed to outwardly using them to defeat the enemy. This work is all about controlling what has been gained.

The Prince and its author Machiavelli are often condemned for not only tolerating mistreating people but for advising it in a lot of circumstances especially to prove authority and to take any possible threatening might away from the people. Proponents argue that without a rule of law with stiff penalties people would become barbaric and the system would deteriorate into even more unbearable situations. It is completely open about dealing out harsh measures to guarantee the survival of the state by any means necessary. However The Prince does contain methodologies that incorporate and use control based on kindness but these methods are few and far between.

Overall this book's influence on politics and business cannot be underestimated. Ultimately it is a must read being a very powerful book about being very powerful.

1 out of 5 stars A Truely Overrated Book.......2007-09-19

"The Prince" is essentially a "how-to" guide for royalty durring the 1400's in Italy. I'm not going to make this review very long... a short review for a short book. It gets one star. Why? It's a very out dated classic. The advice and philosophical ramblings handed out in this book is quite specific to its time and place, and unlike, say The Communist Manefesto, for example, are no long relevant to us. In fact, it would probably be downright criminal today to run your country in the way Machiavelli suggests you do. This book would be a good read if you are interested in the history of Italian principalities durring this time period. Other than that, there is really no reason to read it. The morality of the book is actually very objectionable, and on top of that... its REALLLLLY borring.

It's probably considered to be a classic work of literature because it is just old. That's all. If I wrote some crap right now about the mythical underpants gnomes, and it survived for 600 years, people in 2600 BC would probably be saying "FIVE STARS for the Underpants Gnome Chronicals. This a great relic from the year 2007! Such insight into their ideology and beliefs...."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-09-06

This book is for serious philosophical readers.

Machiavelli broke down a raw and ruthless political idea. I read the Art of War before this book, and they are similar. However, Machiavelli is much more aggressive. If you're reading this book for entertainment, it can be dry at times. Nonetheless, the information in this book is timeless, and should be an enjoyment for interested readers only.

Book Description

FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF FATHERLAND AND POMPEII COMES THE MOST PROVOCATIVE AND BRILLIANT NOVEL OF ANTIQUITY SINCE I, CLAUDIUS --

IMPERIUM

A CAUTIONARY TALE OF CICERO, THE GREATEST ORATOR OF ALL TIME, AND HIS EXTRAORDINARY STRUGGLE FOR POWER IN ROME.

When Tiro, the confidential secretary (and slave) of a Roman senator, opens the door to a terrified stranger on a cold November morning, he sets in motion a chain of events that will eventually propel his master into one of the most suspenseful courtroom dramas in history. The stranger is a Sicilian, a victim of the island's corrupt Roman governor, Verres. The senator is Marcus Cicero -- an ambitious young lawyer and spellbinding orator, who at the age of twenty-seven is determined to attain imperium -- supreme power in the state.

Of all the great figures of the Roman world, none was more fascinating or charismatic than Cicero. And Tiro -- the inventor of shorthand and author of numerous books, including a celebrated biography of his master (which was lost in the Dark Ages) -- was always by his side.

Compellingly written in Tiro's voice, Imperium is the re-creation of his vanished masterpiece, recounting in vivid detail the story of Cicero's quest for glory, competing with some of the most powerful and intimidating figures of his -- or any other -- age: Pompey, Caesar, Crassus, and the many other powerful Romans who changed history.

Robert Harris, the world's master of innovative historical fiction, lures us into a violent, treacherous world of Roman politics at once exotically different from and yet startlingly similar to our own -- a world of Senate intrigue and electoral corruption, special prosecutors and political adventurism -- to describe how one clever, compassionate, devious, vulnerable man fought to reach the top.

4 out of 5 stars "I do not propose to die leaving one ounce of talent unspent, or one mile of energy left in my legs".......2007-10-12

When most people think about the history of Rome and fiction works based on it, a few names quickly come to mind, including Caesar, Pompey and Caligula. In terms of his influence in today's world though, there is another man that should be considered as a serious challenger to those important figures in history: Marcus Tullius Cicero. Not only he is almost unanimously considered as the top orator and politician in ancient Rome, but his speeches and ideas on government have been studied, imitated and utilized by leaders throughout history. His influence is such that even the US Constitution is based in part on Cicero's ideas on how government should be organized.

Robert Harris brings this intriguing, and sometimes contradictory, character to life by taking historic information as the skeleton of his novel and adding fictionalized dialogues and events to fill in the meat. Thus, we get a novel that is not only instructive regarding the importance of Cicero in a time when the end of the Republic was visible in the horizon, but also one that entertains the reader until its conclusion.

Harris had a great idea when he decided to use Tiro, Cicero's slave, secretary and friend, as the narrator of this story. This provides a broader view than what the author would have been able to deliver by a first person narrator, but more of an inside look than we would get from an omniscient narrator. From the start of Cicero's public life as a lawyer and politician, until his running for Consul, Tiro takes us, with his steady voice, through the events that had a crucial role in the destiny of one of the greatest civilizations in history.

This is a great novel, and those that are interested in the history of Rome will definitely have a great time reading it. And don't worry; Pompey and Caesar are part of this work, since they also had a key role in the events that unfolded at this time. I would have liked the novel to continue until the end of Cicero's life, but maybe we will get that in the next one. This is the second book Harris writes on Rome, and at this point I am convinced that with his accurate research and great ability for adding fiction without changing the facts, Harris has established himself as part of the elite in this niche.

5 out of 5 stars ANCIENT ROME'S CLARENCE DARROW........2007-10-10

IMPERIUM is a fascinating book that permits the reader a view of the Rome of Cicero, the legendary Roman orator. Indeed, Cicero is the focus of this novel, but this book is more than about Cicero, since it is told through the eyes of Cicero's loyal slave-secretary Tiro.

The novel examines two period's of Cicero's life, and thereby, two periods of Roman history. Cicero's climb to fame and fortune is the first offering of this work. The well researched history affords the reader a look at the brilliance and legal artistry of Cicero. One can easily understand how this great man rose to such prominence in his world. In the process, the reader meets a variety of political characters and military leaders, and in so doing, better understands the workings of the Roman Republic and the aspirations of some of its "giants".

The second phase of the novel explores Cicero's rise to the Consulship of Rome. The inner workings of the political animal that was Roman democracy is exposed, and while this so-called democracy was flawed, it did contribute to the evolution of modern democracy. Interestingly, some of the flaws and failings of the ancient democracy are still with us today, in our allegedly enlightened and modern democracy. Some things in politics are constants, like scheming, lying, and of course, the old reliable standby, corruption. And some of the political "slogans" remain the same too.

This book is a very quick and rewarding read. Its historical backdrop is accurately depicted, the characters drawn from fact, and the story intriguing. I unhesitatingly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Cicero's Rise to Power.......2007-10-09

I am in awe of the fictional writers of the Roman Empire, Graves, McCullough, Saylor, Harris and many others. Each of their novels that I have read has brought me more in touch with some element of the complex culture of the time.

Here, through a speculative treatment on how Cicero became a "new man". We can get an idea of how elections took place and how corruption, for which this society was known, infected them. Harris also deals with issues of class and the entrenched attitudes about status and how this affected politics after Sula and the Civil War.

We also get a plausible portrait of Cicero, how he thought and what motivated him.

I highly recommend this for anyone who has interest in this historical period.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, and very different from McCullough.......2007-10-08

I love Colleen McCullough's sprawling Roman series, which is an extraordinary panorama of one of the most turbulent, fascinating and influential eras of western history, the six-decade-long Fall of the Roman Republic. She's not as polished a writer as Robert Harris, though...her books are wonderfully prolix, almost too much so, and she has certain repetitive mannerisms which can annoy. But the series certainly is a monumental achievement.

While McCullough focuses around the towering life and impact of Julius Caesar, Harris's choice of Cicero is perhaps even more revealing of the true nature of Late Republican politics. Cicero was a major player for most of this period, whose complex relationships with the various factions had immense influence on the course of events, and yet -- unlike Caesar, born to the highest aristocracy -- he was also an outsider who depended entirely on his wits to struggle and survive. Harris deftly depicts his qualities of pragmatism, idealism and political cunning as he negotiates the viper's nest of public service in ancient Rome.

Cicero hasn't aged well in most modern historical recreations. I believe most of our contemporaries accept the greatness and inevitability of Caesar, or someone very like him. Because Cicero opposed Caesar and his faction, and eventually lost his life for it, he comes across most often as a stuffy, self-serving, conniving, all-too-outspoken conservative out of step with the times. The fabulous if inaccurate TV series Rome is just the most recent example.

In fact, Cicero may have been the only sincere defender of the Roman Republic remaining by the time he was killed...and for all its flaws, it was certainly a nobler form of government than its imperial successor.

This excellent book helps to redress the character of Cicero. I can't wait for the sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Cicero Rising.......2007-09-15

Although Robert Harris writes historical fiction, he is not particularly attached to any one time or place. His first novel was actually an alternate history - a what-if-the-Nazis-won-WWII tale called Fatherland. He has, in his last two novels, however, gone back to ancient Rome, first with Pompeii (which I have not read) and now with Imperium, a fictional biography of Cicero.

Narrated by Cicero's slave Tiro (who serves more as an observer than a true character), Imperium tells of the rise of Cicero to the highest position in the Roman Republic, the consulship. The first half is actually more of a courtroom thriller, with Cicero prosecuting a corrupt Sicilian governor. Actually, most of the legal system is open to bribery, making Cicero's job all the harder. At stake is Cicero's whole career: if he can somehow pull off a victory, he can start his climb in power; if he fails, he will never be more than a lowly senator. Of course, since Cicero is well-known in history and the governor, Verres, is almost forgotten, most readers know who will win, but Harris is still able to make the prosecution suspenseful.

The second half of the book deals with Cicero's political rise and the intrigues that both help him and make him enemies. His principal ally - although not always reliable - is Pompey, the great general who is at the peak of his power. On the other side is the plutocrat Crassus, whose hatred of Pompey will create an enmity with Pompey. There is the vicious Catalina who has Crassus's backing and intends on opposing Cicero for the consulship. Finally, there is the ambitious up-and-comer, Julius Caesar.

Harris has written a good novel, but there are imperfections. For all his attempts at being historically accurate, he also has anachronisms, such as referring to the months of July and August (which would not be named until decades later after Julius and Augustus Caesar had risen to the peaks of their power). The story also ends rather abruptly, leading me to think that Harris has a sequel intended. Harris does succeed at the heart of the book, however, bringing Cicero - often thought of as the greatest orator ever - to life. Fans of historical novels - particularly Roman historical novels - should enjoy Imperium.

Book Description

A satire on the culture of victim glorification and Holocaust memory exploitation, My Holocaust follows the careers of the father–son team, Maurice and Norman Messer, who know a good product when they see it. That product is the Holocaust–and Maurice, a survivor with a self–enhancing inflated personal history, and Norman, enjoying vicarious victimhood as a participant in the second–generation movement, proceed to market it enthusiastically. Not even the disappearance of Nechama, Norman's daughter and Maurice's granddaughter, into the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz, where she is transformed into a nun, Sister Consolatia of the Cross, deters them from pushing their agenda. The novel follows them on a tour of the Auschwitz–Birkenau death camp, which Maurice, now the driving force behind the most powerful Holocaust memorialization institution in the U.S., organizes to soften up a major potential donor, and which Norman takes advantage of to embark on a surrealistic search for his daughter.

The novel reaches its climax in the takeover of the U.S. Holocaust museum by a coalition of self–styled victims all seeking Holocaust status, bringing together a large cast of characters from every side of the spectrum–from Holocaust wannabees (African and Native Americans, Muslims, women, etc.) to Holocaust professionals– who proceed to mindlessly sacrifice their own children and drain all meaning from suffering and memory in the fevered competition to win the grand prize.

3 out of 5 stars Hilarious if ultimately a one-joke enterprise.......2007-06-19

I feel ungrateful not giving more stars to a novel that made me laugh as much as this one did but it's not a completely successful venture. The author is a true satrist with a real, stinging wit and you can read her book as a sort of breezy riff on the explotation of tragedies/victimhood but it's not really a developed novel. The characters aren't formed, they're just there to make points. That's fine but the downside is that the book feels slight and doesn't linger. I kept wishing that Reich had really brought the characters to loony life (a la "A Confederacy of Dunces"). Still, this is a really talented writer and I can't wait to read her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening, politically-incorrect and challenging satire........2007-06-17

MY HOLOCAUST isn't the usual nonfiction account one would expect: it's a fictional satire packed with social commentary, and its premise is certain to spark debate, interest and controversy. Here other minorities and causes want to profit from the Holocaust and its attention - and two opportunity-driven businessmen make their living peddling the Holocaust to groups that seek status through victimization. A Holocaust Museum effort backfires when terrorists try to take over the memorial in this eye-opening, politically-incorrect and challenging satire.

5 out of 5 stars If anyone should be in jail it should be the author of this satire........2007-06-16

I think it is discussing to trivialize any massive massacre in human history. Amazon sells "Lectures on the Holocaust" by Germar Rudolf which is a revisionist classic that questions the Holocaust facts in a scholarly and academic and non-hateful and very loving way. Yet the author, Germar Rudolf, is in jail in Germany for THOUGHT CRIMES for writing "Lectures on the Holocaust." If anyone should be in jail it should be the author of this satire. Shame on her! BUT, I give high marks for her unique writing style.

3 out of 5 stars How would you like your sacred cow?.......2007-06-03

An A for effort - great writing, a sharp eye for detail, and the brazen concept. The author bravely goes to the edge - and then jumps right off. The first 3/4 of this book contain some brilliant bits of savagely funny satire - there were several times when I put the book down and just laughed for a minute or two. Loses steam and becomes tiresome in the last 100 pages.

2 out of 5 stars The humor ends pretty quickly.......2007-04-20

I do not object to a humorous book about the exploitation of the Holocaust. There is no doubt that the Holocaust has made too many scoundrels rich and famous. There is also no doubt that it deserves a comic treatment, at least as part of a normalization of the abnormal.

At first the novel is indeed funny, hilariously so. It is no crime on the part of the author to be unable to keep this up for the whole length of the book. The humor quickly ends and the rest of the novel is deadly dull. I am in no position to complain about this, there is considerable talent in this book. It just cannot sustain itself long enough to be taken seriously. Nice try thought.

This novel gets my "Razzz!" of the year award. I see all of the 5 star reviews and can only explain them by supposing that the people reading Flynn's books are looking for this particular sort of nonsense.
The hero is a HERO and a one of those bully boys for the President that take care of business that can't be left to those pinkos in Congress. If you have a loose sense of reality, and are among the 29% who still give Bush a positive approval rating (perhaps a redundant statement), this is the book for you. If not give it a miss and try some Lee Child, or the new novel "Volk's Game".

This is my first Mitch Rapp novel but it won[t be my last. A great story about the classic rogue CIA agent, but rogue for the good guys. And the book serves up rough justice on an assortment of bad characters, from imam apostles of hate, to inside-the-beltway paper-pushers, to amoral terrorist enablers. SPOILER ALERT. I mean, when you have the protagonist go to Saudi Arabia, strap a bomb vest on the evildoer's son, then blow up the son and the bad guy while flipping off a security camera, there isn't really anything more to do to satisfy the bloodlust of the reading audience, myself included. I only worry about one thing, which is that I share many of the geopolitical attitudes of the former East German bad guy. I hope Flynn isn't trying to tell me something.

This landmark book is a loosely fictionalized account of Governor Huey Long of Louisiana, one of the nation's most astounding politicians. All the King's Men tells the story of Willie Stark, a southern-fried politician who builds support by appealing to the common man and playing dirty politics with the best of the back-room deal-makers. Though Stark quickly sheds his idealism, his right-hand man, Jack Burden -- who narrates the story -- retains it and proves to be a thorn in the new governor's side. Stark becomes a successful leader, but at a very high price, one that eventually costs him his life. The award-winning book is a play of politics, society and personal affairs, all wrapped in the cloak of history.

Book Description

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this classic book is generally regarded as the finest novel ever written on american politics. It describes the career of Willie Stark, a back-country lawyer whose idealism is overcome by his lust for power. New Foreword by Joseph Blotner for this fiftieth anniversary edition.

4 out of 5 stars Carefully Balanced Melodrama with Fabulous Poetic Writing.......2007-10-05

ALL THE KING'S MEN has a rich mix of carefully balanced characters who help Jack Burden, the narrator, explore the paths he, his childhood friends, his colleagues, and his parents take through life. At this level, ATKM is a carefully wrought story, more about the tyranny of the past than the bare knuckled compromises of politics, with the character Sadie Burke contrasting with Anne Stanton, Willie Stark contrasting with Adam Stanton and Tiny Duffy, Jack Burden contrasting with Sugar Boy, and so on. But while all of these characters are fully realized, they are also somewhat predictable. It is for this reason that ATKM seems like a melodrama; once you get the characters, their stories fail to surprise.

Nonetheless, this novel is well worth reading, primarily because of Robert Penn Warren's fabulous style. I'm no expert. But most authors I read seem to use metaphors and similes to create a quick burst of insight or beauty. Yes, Updike, Chabon, McEwan and maybe a few others create occasional passages of descriptive writing with multiple elements that fit together in fabulous extended metaphors. But Warren does this repeatedly, taking an idea and exploring it for 100 words or more. This, in my opinion, explains why ATKM has lasted: much of the novel is very fine poetic prose. Here's one example:

"In the morning it had stopped raining and there was the sun. I went out and saw the thin pools of water standing on the black ground, like sheets of isinglass. Around the japonicas, the white and red and coral petals, which had been shattered from the blossoms, floated on the blackly gleaming pools. Some of them floated with the curled edges upward, like boats, and around them other petals floated upside down or had shipped water, making a gay carnage as though a battleship had fired a couple of salvos into a fleet of carnival barges and gondolas in some giddy, happy, far-off land."

Warren's poetic style helps explain why ATKM is both a long book but a fast read.

3 out of 5 stars This is MY review.......2007-09-30

Overall, I thought the story was okay. I am not much of a fan of Penn's prose, and this book dragged until Jack Burden retells the story of Cass Mastern. For me, this is where the book starts falling into place. Maybe I was set up for failure with this book because I keep seeing this novel being called "political fiction." As someone picking this up expecting "political fiction," you'd expect the story to focus on Willie Stark and in much more detail of his humble beginnings to his tragic downfall, but he is only a distant focal point in this novel as the story belongs to one of Stark's cronies, Jack Burden. I don't know WHY I'm supposed to give a flip about Jack Burden and after finishing the novel, I still don't give a toss for the character. There are so many sub-plots and interesting characters within the story that I was much more interested in than the big picture of Burden's personal "odyssey." I felt that some of the story was predictable (Burden's father) and some of the book just didn't seem feasible (the relationship between Stark and Anne Stanton). So all in all, this book didn't do it for me. I have read better.

4 out of 5 stars Politics.......2007-08-30

Jack was a journalist living in the 1930s in the South. As a newspaperman he had the opportunity to follow the early political campaign of the idealistic Willie Stark, a farm boy who thought he could make a difference and agreed to run when some powerful men asked him.

Little did Willie know that he was a stooge set up to split the vote and guarantee a win to his opponent. Little did he know that nobody was listening to his earnest, figure-ridden speeches about how he would make the country a better place. Jack was there to help pick up the pieces when Willie finally found out what was going on, and he was there to witness Willie's rebirth as a fighter, who promised to come back to campaign on his own for the next election.

Years later Jack is no longer in journalism. Instead, he is Willie's right-hand man. He is the one who keeps track of the things Governor Willie Stark needs to get done. He is the one who digs up dirt on friends and opponents and puts pressure where pressure is needed. He is essential to the smooth running of Willie's personal and political life, and he is much reviled by many people for his role in the government.

In Jack's mind, though, Willie is a better politician than most. There is some corruption within his organization, but there is also much more good being accomplished than in past governments. Jack defends to his friends and himself that such good should and does overshadow the dark parts of his boss. As this book progresses, we are able to see how decent and moral people can be sucked into a somewhat immoral life, and how those who are immoral to begin with can find places to sneak into an ethical man's world.

I really liked watching the evolution of all of the characters in this book, and the changing relationships among them. It was interesting to puzzle through Willie's change from idealistic young man to hardened womanizer, or Jack's change from slacker student to dedicated blackmailer. I liked seeing where Jack and Anne's relationship went wrong, and I liked the stubborn way Adam refused to let his friendship with Jack go.

This book had some beautiful descriptive paragraphs, but there were times in which I felt I was simply wallowing in description, trying to wade through words in order to get back to the story.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-08-27

After seeing the movie I wanted to finally read the book; I wasn't disappointed. Although some of the language does not translate well to today, I really enjoyed the story and the way Warren uses real life events to craft his story. The book is always better than the movie!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite American Novel.......2007-08-26

Has a better American political novel been written? All The Kings Men edges out The Last Hurrah on my list and is the only novel I've read three times in the last 30 years. Yeah, I knew how it would end but it is worth reading more than once. Willie Stark is one of literature's great characters.

Others have gone into the plot and the themes of the novel so I'll just say read ATKM if you want to read an American novel on the level of The Great Gatsby.

ANIMAL FARM

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture. It is the account of the bold struggle, initiated by the animals, that transforms Mr. Jones's Manor Farm into Animal Farm--a wholly democratic society built on the credo that All Animals Are Created Equal. Out of their cleverness, the pigs Napoleon, Squealer, and Snowball emerge as leaders of the new community in a subtle evolution that proves disastrous. The climax is the brutal betrayal of the faithful horse Boxer, when totalitarian rule is reestablished with the bloodstained postscript to the founding slogan: But some Animals Are More Equal Than Others. . . .

1984

In 1984, London is a grim city where Big Brother is always watching you and the Thought Police can practically read your mind. Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 1984 - George Orwell.......2007-10-01

On 1984:
In George Orwell's 1984, war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. So goes the slogan that describes life in dystopian London, a city monstrously ruled by the totalitarian state of Oceania. Along with Oceania, the states of Eurasia and Eastasia rule the world. Their co-existence isn't peaceful, however, as the three states are perpetually at war with each other. In Oceania, the government's figurehead is Big Brother, who is a personification of the collective power of the state and not a real person. His "face" fills the streets on the poster fronts plastered all over the city with the words "Big Brother is Watching You" underneath his overbearing glare.

Winston Smith, the novel's main character, works for the Party (the government). He despises his job along with the Party and Big Brother, but under no circumstances is he allowed to show it. In fact, to so much as even think a thought against the Party or Big Brother is considered treasonous and punishable by death! At present time, the Party doesn't have the technology to read people's minds, but they are working on it. Instead they control behavior through telescreens (television panels) and microphones. In London, telescreens are ubiquitous and cannot be turned off or interacted with. Presumably there are agents monitoring activity nearly everywhere that a member of the Party might frequent through these devices. In addition to technological surveillance, there is also human surveillance offered by both children and adults. Citizens of Oceania and members of the Party in particular are encouraged to report any unusual behavior which is interpreted as disloyalty to the state. It becomes virtually impossible, then, to get away with saying or projecting any kind of dissidence towards the Party. Individualism of any kind is considered unorthodox and a threat to the state. Winston would not be allowed to read this review without risking his life.

Oceania's population is divided between Party members, who make up 15%, and the unintelligent and underprivileged proletariat, which round out the remaining 85%. The "Proles" as they are known, could theoretically rebel and destroy the Party, but they are too ignorant and simple-minded to even dream of it. Winston knows this to be true, though still reserves some faint hope that he could be wrong and that the Proles could rise against the machine. The only other hope he has of an overthrow lies in the mysterious existence of the Brotherhood, a shadow collective inside of Oceania seeking to eliminate the Party and establish a democratic government. Winston has never met a member of the Brotherhood because it is impossible to even approach somebody to find out if they are disgruntled with the Party. To do so would be to risk your life. If they caught you, you would be eliminated and dubbed an unperson in Newspeak (the official and preferred language of Oceania). You will never have existed.

This is why Winston was apprehensive when Julia, a girl working in the same government building, slipped him a note. Initially he had suspected that she was a member of the Thought Police, an organization involved with seeking out heretics or disloyal Party members. Was she trying to snuff him out? Had she tapped into his mind and found a reservoir of anti-government angst? Winston thought his days were numbered, but was she the one that would reveal this to the authorities?

Orwell has given the world a political and psychological masterpiece. Written in 1948 as a vision of how the world would look in 1984, Orwell's only fault has been the fact that the novel is more relevant today than during its namesake. In our ever-advancing technoage, 1984 stands as a caution and a warning against governmental controlling measures. But to view his novel as a reaction against totalitarianism is to miss the boat. Orwell also explores human nature from a multiplicity of levels. He examines the human thirst for power and how this thirst intensifies when a group fuses their collective thirsts into a giant groupthirst (to use Newspeak). He asks what ultimate loyalty really means and how it can be redistributed from one object to another. What will such a task require? Can pain or love or any human longing outlast or outperform the other? Can truth be altered? And if so, who has the right or the power to alter it? These questions and more are asked in 1984. Will your answers to the questions tow the Party line, or will you sigh in paranoiac relief that you can think for yourself?

On the quality of the edition:
The cover is hard and firm, just what you'd want from a hardcover edition. Unlike other hardcovers which bend easier, however, this version takes quite an effort to keep the book fully opened and bent back to read. This makes it impossible to read with one hand holding the book up. I read with the book placed on a surface, so I have no problems. But for others, this might be an issue. All in all, I am very satisfied with the quality of this edition.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for Randy Wayne White fans.......2007-09-10

Even though the names were different (author and hero) the background foundation for Doc Ford is unmistakable and fun to read. Can't wait to read "The Deadlier Sex" as the follow-up to this great begining for Randy (Striker) Wayne White. I also enjoyed White's present day introduction to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great adventure.......2007-08-23

White proves he has always had a knack for spinning a great story even when he was a relative beginner. Whether writing about Doc Ford or some other Travis McGee type hero his stories always entertain me.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, early White novel.......2007-07-29

There are many ways to categorize fiction. One category I'd like to propose is "disposable" fiction. Disposable fiction is made up of those (relatively) cheap paperbacks filled with stories that are almost pure action; it tends to be brief (rarely more than 250 pages), simply written and usually targeted to a very specific demographic: Harlequin-style romances for women and adventure fiction for men. Many of the writers who produce disposable fiction are borderline hacks, churning out potboilers quickly and with little creativity; they often need to adhere to strict formulas and have little control over the direction of the stories.

Randy Wayne White started out his career as a disposable fiction writer. The difference is that White is a good writer, and even in his early books, his gifts shine through. His Dusky MacMorgan books will never be mistaken for great literature (as even he admits in his introduction), but they are entertaining.

In the third MacMorgan book, Cuban Death-Lift, Dusky is recruited by a federal agent buddy nicknamed Stormin' Norman (this was written, by the way, long before a real Stormin' Norman would come to prominence in the Gulf War of the early 1990s). Norm wants charter captain Dusky to transport a CIA agent to Cuba in the middle of the Mariel Boatlift.

The agent turns out to be beautiful Androsa Santarun, a Cuban-American charged with smuggling a double agent off the island. Two things are certain: there will be lots of killing occurring before the mission is done and Dusky and Androsa will end up in bed together. White knows exactly what his target audience (men) expects: sex and action. He actually has his own nickname for this type of fiction that I will leave to the reader to discover.

I read this book in just a couple of hours, which seems about right. Cuban Death-Lift is not exactly one of those books that needs months to finish. As with the first two books, this is a fun story, and it gives a good glimpse of the better Randy Wayne White that would develop later.

4 out of 5 stars young author .......2007-07-22

This was a fast & furious romp through a very interesting time in our history. Randy was very young so some of the plot moves slow and other elements are a bit hurried. Still his attention to the facts and the twists of plot are brilliant albeit the characters are a tad shallow. A good read in a "potato chip" kind of way. Light, not a full meal, but you can't eat just one!

5 out of 5 stars Randy Wayne White never disappoints!.......2007-05-14

Doc Ford is in fine form in this latest Randy Wayne White. Fans will happily find all their favorite people and places. This book reintroduces an old character, now dying and using Doc to finish his unfinished business. I love these books, I love Randy Wayne White's knowledge of these islands off the coast of Florida, the flora, fauna, and local color. You will not be disappointed in this one, which is exciting, violent and touching.

CIA superagent Mitch Rapp is back in action in this high-velocity adventure from the master of the political thriller, Vince Flynn. SEPARATION OF POWER CIA director Thomas Stansfield is dead -- a fact many individuals in and around the nation's capital are pleased to hear. But their happiness proves to be short-lived once they learn that Stansfield's successor is the late director's close friend and protégé, Dr. Irene Kennedy. Her plan of action is to pursue the very goals Stansfield established -- something Stansfield's fiercest enemies don't want to hear. And something they refuse to accept. Meanwhile, Israel has discovered that Saddam Hussein is close to entering the nuclear arms race -- and they've vowed to stop the Iraqi madman before he can get his hands on the ultimate weapon. With the Middle East teetering on the precipice of chaos and devastation, the president of the United States is forced to act. The commander in chief's secret weapon? None other than the CIA's top counterterrorism operative, Mitch Rapp. But the window for action on this crucial mission is incredibly tight. Israel has given the United States only two weeks to take the nukes out. After that, they'll do whatever it takes to destroy the weapons themselves. With the haunting specter of World War III looming, Rapp races against time and impossible odds -- navigating the deadly alleys of Baghdad, tearing through the corruption-riddled streets of Washington, D.C., and taking drastic measures against anyone who gets in his way. With action that sizzles and true-to-life insider detail, Separation Of Power showcases New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn at his shell-shocking best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book and a completion to Third Option.......2007-07-25

Third Option was a good book, but incomplete until you read this book in followup. I'd stress they would probably be better together as one book, but that's just my 2cents. Great action, drama, plot development etc... Everything I want in my "escape" from reality. A+++++

4 out of 5 stars Good story.......2007-07-23

I have really grown found of Vince Flynn and his stories and the characters in them. I listen to them when I drive from one end of California to another and am never bored.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2007-05-06

If you liked Tom Clancy's books and the Jack Ryan series, you will love Vince Flynn. If you like "24" and Jack Bauer, Buy them all now. Don't make the mistake I did and buy just one. I had to wait for the others to arrive, after doing another order. Just buy what is available now, and be prepared for an exciting ride. Fighting terrorism the way it should be.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the last three.......2007-02-19

Having discovered Vince Flynn and his addictive writing style, I admit I'm hooked. I can't wait to get to the next book.

5 out of 5 stars The new king in town.......2007-01-22

I borrowed my first Vince Flynn book from the "library" at work. I was hooked. Vince Flynn writes about the same subjects as Clancy. I have liked Clancy from the start but he is often too nitpicky about the minutia of his subject matter, often to the detriment to the story. Whereas Flynn gives just enough detail to lend credibility to his writing.

Nobody doubts Clancy is an insider in the community and Flynn leaves no doubt he is one too.

His stories are fast paced and a VERY good read. I recommend ANY book by him. Clancy writes about the Russian cold war, Flynn writes about the war on terror. His main character, Mitch Rapp, is undeniably a complete Bad***, I loved the Jack Ryan character, but time to retire Jack, Mitch is in town.
