Another excellent book by Jane Townswick. I am looking forward to expressing my artistic side in beautiful artwork. This book is very helpful with tools needed and forms of application. I am very impressed.

This is a must buy book for those interested in applique. I have many applique books and count this among the very best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and realistic.......2001-04-30

Over 130 pages of great instruction and realistic photos that show that anyone who takes the time can do applique. Not only are the designs that you can Xerox for patterns crisp, but the instruction is easy to read and follow. And the photos are exact size, so you see what you will get when you are done.

I liked the book because it also says that we can choose our own material, which suits our own desires, where some books say you have to have this or that type of material made by this ir that maker, and you end up running all over the place and come home discouraged and throw your hands up and say *&%#@+ and vow never to try and do applique again.

This is the book that can help you become less discouraged and a success at a wonderful art form.

5 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to easy applique techniques & projects........2000-08-06

Make your applique a work of art through Artful Applique The Easy Way which features detailed project instructions for sixteen blocks filled with flowers, birds, and wreathes. The focus on easy applique includes tips for streamlining and patterns for quick use. Superb introduction to easy applique techniques & projects.

Book Description

The Ankh-Morpork Post Office is running like . . . well, not at all like a government office. The mail is delivered promptly; meetings start and end on time; five out of six letters relegated to the Blind Letter Office ultimately wend their way to the correct addresses. Postmaster General Moist von Lipwig, former arch-swindler and confidence man, has exceeded all expectations—including his own. So it's somewhat disconcerting when Lord Vetinari summons Moist to the palace and asks, "Tell me, Mr. Lipwig, would you like to make some real money?"

Vetinari isn't talking about wages, of course. He's referring, rather, to the Royal Mint of Ankh-Morpork, a venerable institution that haas run for centuries on the hereditary employment of the Men of the Sheds and their loyal outworkers, who do make money in their spare time. Unfortunately, it costs more than a penny to make a penny, so the whole process seems somewhat counterintuitive.

Next door, at the Royal Bank, the Glooper, an "analogy machine," has scientifically established that one never has quite as much money at the end of the week as one thinks one should, and the bank's chairman, one elderly Topsy (née Turvy) Lavish, keeps two loaded crossbows at her desk. Oh, and the chief clerk is probably a vampire.

But before Moist has time to fully consider Vetinari's question, fate answers it for him. Now he's not only making money, but enemies too; he's got to spring a prisoner from jail, break into his own bank vault, stop the new manager from licking his face, and, above all, find out where all the gold has gone—otherwise, his life in banking, while very exciting, is going to be really, really short. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Decent Second Book...of a Trilogy?.......2007-10-17

This is a rare time for a Discworld book, when a story is a direct sequel to a previous novel. Even more so when it features a newer, and apparently to-be re-occurring, character in Moist van Lipwig. This is a sequel to one of my favorites of the series, "Going Postal", and was somewhat hinted at towards the end of that other novel. The story is decent enough, following the next exploits of Moist and Adora Belle Dearheart. The story moves pretty fast, but concentrates on sub-plots rather than the main one suggested by the title.

If Pratchett had decided to make the book about just about the establishment of paper money on the Disc, it'd have just been a revamping of "Going Postal". Instead, he wisely goes with a look at familial tradition, blackmail, quirky habits, and all those other things fun about the world of banking...if not the world in general. There are a few shadows of previous books here, "Interesting Times" comes to mind in particular, although a sort-of-second Hex debuts as well. This book, to my delight, hints at a third government-enforced adventure for Moist, and I'm quite curious of what his future might hold.

2 out of 5 stars This is not Pratchett!.......2007-10-16

I've read ALL of the Pratchett Discworld novels to date, and this isn't one of them. I don't know what he thinks he is getting away with, but the characters, jokes, and story flow are not consistent with his previous work. Jokes concerning looking up the Golem's dress and a beard compared to pubic hair are not funny and below the Pratchett good taste standard. If you want to read Pratchett, this novel is not relevant. I want my money back, Terry.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Pratchett creation.......2007-10-14

Well, seeing as this is a Pratchett, I knew what I was getting myself into. But even I was surprised:
The book contains that special "perfectly logical" philosophy of the Discworld - stating quite simply that a potato is worth more than gold.
This book left me with quite a lot to think about. It makes you just take a moment and think about the last page you read. The reasoning is perfectly sensible, the logic is flawless. So how did we not see this before? And why does it contradict everything we deem "Logical"? In this book more than any other Discworld - Pratchett manages to twist logic into his own beautiful shapes. Making you take an entirely new look on life. Why a single Dollar is worth more that a dollar, for example.

And of course - the book is hilarious. I found myself laughing on the Train. Embarrassing!

Great characters, great build up, and a great climax to the entire story. Like every Discworld novel, I felt a twang of sadness when I closed it.

1 out of 5 stars Where has the real Terry Pratchett gone?.......2007-10-10

If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld and love the style they are written in, this book is not for you.

This was the most disappointing book I have ever purchased, mainly because my expectations were that it would be in similar style & tone as all of his other books. I have been a Terry Pratchett fans for many years, eagerly awaiting the next book. I am so sorry that those days appear to be over.

This book - along with Wintersmith - were major let-downs for me. I suspect that someone else has stared writing under Terry Pratchett's name. My sister, also a big fan, has the same suspicions. The humor is flat, the clever, humorous remarks are lacking, and - worst of all - it is as if all new characters have been created & given the same names as those I had come to love!

I forced myself to keep reading, just in case Terry P decided to through in some of the good stuff. Last night, after the hideously long & boring conversation between Moist & Cosmo, I actually had to put the book down.

2 books in a row produced with the same discrepancies - I will not be rushing to Amazon or the book store to buy the next book. I'll probably go to a bookstore & read a chapter of 2 before I consider another purchase.

I want the best of Pratchett back! I want the Granny Weatherwax & the Vetinari & all the others old & new back the way they were!

5 out of 5 stars Love This Book.......2007-10-10

This book has a parallel world with a half twist that allows us to see truths about our world. This book, about money, cleared up lots of things for me about money. It was also hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Urban Planning!.......2007-01-10

I was put on to this book by a professor at USF School of Architecture. It contains not only the history of placemaking but real examples of placemaking and tools in how to achieve the notion of "place." Not only is this a great resource, but it is easy to read and follow along.

Highly reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars Power and ample information and graphics.......2006-08-24

I found this book to be one of the best out on the topic, of which there are too few at present for such an important topic. The depth and breadth of place-making topics and their coverage makes this a very excellent easy-to-read-and-understand as well as a long-term reference tool. The graphics are very well done. Having recently attended a Harvard program on retail for cities and new towns and urban center given by Bob Gibbs and Terry Shook, I especially found the book right on target. I want to see more of these types of books.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Poor Offering.......2007-08-10

This is not a very good book. 50% of the book is devoted to Mr. Crampton's less than interesting observations of life in a small town. His advice is mostly extremely basic common sense stuff that any normal person should already know. He offers very few interesting insights.

The other half of the book is his list of the 120 best small towns in America. This part of the book is even more weak. It's obvious Mr. Crampton did a lot of internet travel to gather his data as the descriptions are clearly culled from the towns' chamber of commerce websites. He offers zero insight or information gained from him (or someone else) actually visiting / living in the towns and conveying what the towns are actually like.

His ruse is painfully evident as the "more info" listing for each town is merely a link to their respective chamber of commerce website! What "more info" could there be given that the author merely copied the site? Even his internet research was exceptionally lazy.

The book should be titled "A Compilation of America's Best Small Towns' Chamber of Commerce Website Info plus Non-insightful Musings of the Armchair Travelling Author."

And how do the towns qualify as being best? By Mr. Crampton's estimation they must have a highschool, and a hospital, and at least a few other businesses that aren't Walmart. Could the bar be set any lower? With that criteria one could throw 120 darts blindfolded at a map and do just as well as this book.

The book could be fodder for a Garrison Keilor Ketchup skit, "you know June, why don't we retire to the country, find a town with a highschool and live out our days..... Dear, have you been getting enough Ketchup lately..."

A very weak text that I'll be returning to Amazon post haste!

3 out of 5 stars Make that 3 1/2 stars.......2005-03-28

Actually, I would have given "Making Your Move" 4 stars had I found the descriptions of the individual towns more interesting. But, what I did find was a witty style of writing, some laugh-out-loud moments, and some very down-to-earth advice on the pearls and perils of small-town life. One might apply Norm's smart and insightful guidelines to just about any sparsely populated area in the quest for new habitation. So even though his selections failed to fire me up, they did make me realize that I may not be cut out for small-town living after all. And that, in itself, is worth far more than the price of a book. Thanks, Norm, and make that four stars.

3 out of 5 stars Part of the story.......2003-03-12

This book is a good place to start if you're thinking of moving to a town of 15,000 or less. It will point you to many interesting communities. However, having used his previous book to guide my last move, and as a resident of one of the towns highlighted in this book (Grinnell), I can honestly say that data only carries you so far. Crampton could provide readers with a great benefit by lengthening the amount of description and flavor for each town. In particular, one key element missing is the 'dynamic' of a town: is it progressive? conservative? excited about education? quick to vote down taxes and bonds? These elements form the 'culture' of a small town, and believe me, the culture of a small town will be *very* important to you!

3 out of 5 stars A good guide to start.......2003-01-08

As a resident of one of the 120 "best small towns" recommended by Norman Crampton, I was delighted to see Silver City on the list.

While Crampton's book is a good place to start your search for small town living, it is important to realize that each small town offers a unique personality. Some generalizations simply do not apply to Silver City. For example, it is not necessary to join a church (or country club) in order to fit in here. Even a small community like ours has diverse sub-populations: recent retirees, most of whom have some affinity for the arts; old-timers, most of whom are the conservative church-goers Crampton describes; and Hispanic families, many of whom have worked in the mines.

These groups rarely interact, although we usually get along very peacefully. We also have a number of folks who teach at the university -- and we rarely see them around town.

To learn about Silver city, you won't get much information from the Chamber of Commerce or the editor of the newspaper. You'd do better to spend some time hanging out at the AIR cafe, talking to whoever comes in. The morning and afternoon groups are quite different and everyone is friendly.

The author gives some nuts and bolts about each small town. Unfortunately, with the exception of weather, much of this information will change by the time the book is printed. And your decision may well be made by factors that can't be added up.

The best part of the book is the section on economics of small town living. Here, he's right on. You have to budget for travel to a large city now and then. Air travel will be more costly and you need time to drive to a large airport. His view of housing prices seems optimistic. If you move to a desirable city (such as Silver City) expect to pay more for a house than he allows.
And if you move to retire, your economic picture will be quite different. Many newcomers to Silver City are beginning a second career as an artist or writer. Moving without a job is scary -- and I do not recommend it unless you fit the profile I describe in my own book, Making the Big Move.

These First Place Bible studies provide so much spiritual support. You can spend as little as 10 min. a day with each day's lesson. Or, if you're like most of us First Placer's, You'll want to linger longer on what the Lord is trying to tell you. There are many First Place Bible studies. Just try one. You'll be glad you did.

3 out of 5 stars Making Wise Choices.......2006-03-16

Although I have not yet finished with this Bible study, I have been a little disappointed with the first six lessons. This is the fifth First Place Bible study book that I have done, and I have found all of the others to be great. This study seems to have less Scripture and more questions asking the student to reflect on his own thoughts and feelings. Some of the questions are hypothetical and difficult to answer as well as somewhat repetitious. Authors need to stick with immersing students with God's Word and what it has to say.

Book Description

Most homeowners long for more space as well as space that better fits their needs. But building an addition is expensive, time-consuming, and disruptive to the household. What homeowners don't realize is that just about every house has room to spare, much of it unrecognized. Making Room showcases creative ideas for areas that are underused or taken for granted--a broom closet, an empty wall, window bays, and corner nooks.
Making Room focuses entirely on creating new spaces within the existing footprint of the home, and explores commonly overlooked spaces and scores of clever ideas for putting those spaces to use. More than 100 creative ideas highlight transformations that are small in scale but big in impact, such as a bathroom closest converted to a shower, drawers incorporated into a staircase, a bookcase built into the base of a staircase, and a computer niche tucked into a hallway. Making Room also provides practical design advice that inspires homeowners to adapt the ideas to any room in their home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book with clever ideas.......2007-07-16

This was a wonderful pictorial book with all kinds of useful ideas for small spaces. The photos were colorful and clear, the text explaining them was informative and brief enough to keep interest and keep the pages turning.

5 out of 5 stars Bachelor remodeling needs a start.......2007-07-12

For about 5 years, my adult and single son has complained about the inefficiency of his kitchen. Since he is an excellent cook, the kitchen is a hub in his historic but small home. When I sent him this book, he found immediate adaptability to his situation and the thinking process began. As a package design specialist, he decided to draw up plans and "repackage" his kitchen. One space saver that really caught his eye was the concept of building drawers in the steps up to the second floor.

5 out of 5 stars More Ideas Than I've Ever Found in One Book.......2007-03-05

It took me about five minutes of looking quickly through this book to realize that I needed to take the book home and to carry it around the house looking at things in an entirely different way than I'd ever seen it before. I've been wondering about storage space for some time. This book points out that there is room for about twice as much as I have if I would just look at some of the areas of the house in a different way.

Just some of the ideas:

Stairs: Make the treads to flip-up lids to access the box underneath, or insert drawers underneath. Page 17

Dorway: The space over the door can be converted to a small bookshelf of antique display area. Page 56

Under/Over Kitchen Cabinets: Build a drawer into the toe-kick area under the cabinets for storage of thin things like serving dishes, or all kinds of things can be put into the space above the cabinets.

This is a great idea book of how you can probably double your storage area.

In "Making Room: Finding Space In Unexpected Places", author Wendy Jordan draws upon her more than twenty years of experience in the remodeling industry to help apartment dwellers and homeowners to create new areas of `liveability' within their existing residence without the necessity of major remodeling. Profusely illustrated throughout, "Making Room" features more than one hundred creative, do-it-yourself ways to make the living space within a home bigger and better without adding on or tearing down walls. More than forty case studies illustrate dozens of ideas highlighting transformation that are `small in scale but big in impact'. From converting the toe-kick under kitchen cabinets into perfect storage areas for serving dishes; to the use of hooks, shelves, and slim cabinetry to enhance the usefulness of a closet, to building a draw into a stair and thereby creating a jumbo-size storage area for bulky items, "Making Room" offers a highly recommended wealth of practical ideas and recommendations for interior design and remodeling that are easy to do and enduringly useful.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe too small?.......2004-02-11

The size of this book is quite small 5x7. Now think about how small each black and white picture must be when there are 4 to each page. Yep, 2x2 and when your line of vision is seeing 8 (both pages) at the same time, it's difficult to focus on one individual block. I really dislike the black and white pictures. I know adding color would change the look of the block, but they all just seem to blend together without color. There are a few color pictures for directions. I'm not saying I won't use it, but I doubt I'll use it often.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quilter's Resource.......2003-08-07

1000 Great Quilt Blocks is the quilting book I've been looking for. Yes, it assumes you have some piecing knowledge, however it covers everything from four patch to letters and numbers. In particular I like the swan block and Indian trails block. I really appreciate its (relatively) small size, and the easy manner in which it is laid out. I know I will refer to this one again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Instructions Not Included!.......2003-07-26

This book is for very experienced quilters only, in my opinion. I didn't see instructions regarding how to sew the various block parts together to make the block. This book might be a good idea to get for picking a block, but then you'd have to go elsewhere for instructions on how much fabric to buy and how to make it into something. I am very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance for the Eyes & Ideas.......2006-11-01

Kitty Pippen broke new ground with her first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics, and I consider it a "must have book" for anyone with more than a passing interest in Japanese fabrics. Ms. Pippen and her daughter, Sylvia, have pushed the boundaries further with this book, Asian Elegance, which incorporates polynesian and Japanese fabrics, design elements and ideas. Well done Pippens!

Since her first book, many of the Japanese fabrics that were so readily available are rare. Many traditional Japanese fabric makers are no longer manufacturing, or have modernized or moved to other countries. The quilts in the new book reflect some of these changes. Fabrics are more contemporary, embrace polynesian elements, and generally are available at most quilt and fabric stores or from resources listed in the book. All in all, this is a book to inspire, and grow your ideas. The elements of graceful design are timeless. It's worth the investment.

Also a great book along with Quilting with Japanese Fabrics which I purchased at the same time. I will get a great deal of pleasure from the many ideas in the book. It's a pity I didnt realise that is was in american dollars and not australian but nevertheless it was a great purchase.
Thank you and keep me informed of any other great quilting books to buy.
Thank you very much once again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2005-09-09

This is a beautiful book - even if you don't make the quilts as presented here, they inspire you to bring simplicity and calmness to your quilting designs. The directions are logical and easy to follow and the pictures speak volumes! Give it a try!

3 out of 5 stars Get the other one instead.......2004-06-15

I love Kitty Pippen's first book, Quilting with Japanese Fabrics. This book is nice, but I don't think it covers a lot of new territory. If you can buy both her books, great, but if you can only buy one, I'd recommend the other one over this.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful patterns.......2007-09-28

I was looking for a good book of Christmas patterns that were based on the holy family and I found it it in this book. It is very flexible in its patterns and possibilities for different projects and I was thoroughly pleased. I definitely recommend this book for people looking for patterns in this area.

5 out of 5 stars A top pick for holiday decorators handy with the needle........2006-11-05

Rachel W.N. Brown's ADORATION QUILTS: APPLIQUE NATIVITY PROJECTS uses Christmas and the story of the Nativity as a theme, offering projects which blend Nativity themes into quilts. Table settings, fireplace mantle decorations, and more. A top pick for holiday decorators handy with the needle.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Applique at a Great Value!.......2006-09-01

This is a book that is jam packed with beautiful applique quilt patterns based on nativity themes. It includes instructions for a lovely tree skirt and other decorative quilt projects. I've seen patterns like these offered block of the month style at $7 to $12 per block ... Here you have many usable, detailed designs and configurations all for the price of one book. If you shy away from detailed applique, this book probably isn't for you. However, if you are a quilter looking for projects that focus on the spiritual meaning of Christmas, and enjoy McKenna Ryan or Mount Redoubt style applique designs, you will enjoy making the projects in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Nativity Designs & Journal Put the Spirit Back into Christmas .......2006-07-29

Rachel Brown's book, Adoration Quilts: Applique Nativity Projects, is much more than a how to book for Christmas quilts. While the illustrations and directions in this book clearly teach the reader how to construct attractive Christmas quilts, there is a story here. Ms. Brown takes you on a Biblical and personal journey with each quilt block. She puts the spiritual element back into Christmas by sharing her family traditions. After reading the role each block plays in telling the story of Jesus's birth, I felt better prepared to tell the story, creating my own nativity quilt.

I recommend this book to people who like quilting , applique work ,and Christmas stories.
