Book Description
Liberal media activists beware! Richard A. Viguerie, venture capitalist of the conservative movement (described as funding father of the right) and David Franke, a founder of the conservative movement, detail how conservatives-shut out by the liberal mass media of the 1950s and '60s-came to power by utilizing new and alternative media, and then created their own mass media.
Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary summary and primer on political communication........2006-09-17
More timely now than when it was published in 2004, this book is the definitive word about political communication. Richard Viguerie is well known as the father of conservative direct mail campaigns.David Franke is less famous, but has solid conservative credentials. And make no mistake about it: these men are conservatives, not Republicans.
The first thing the authors do is recount media revolutions of the past and how they changed the world. Their examples resonate with historical significance: the Reformation, the American Revolution and leading into the birth of the American conservative movement and the Goldwater campaign. This is, frankly, a book that should be read by every conservative. (Those of other political persuasions would benefit as well.)Viguerie and Franke bring clear eyes to each of these seminal moments in history and the story is viscerally interesting.
The story moves from direct mail to talk radio and the Internet.
The authors go into considerable detail on how the "liberal" hegemony over the mass media has been seriously dented, if not broken. Their analysis is extremely perceptive.
Interestingly, though the book was published in 2004, its message about how the loyalty of conservatives could be lost by the Republican Party. Their warnings, as the elections of 2006 loom on the horizon, were ignored with the result that Republicans may face significant loses. Viguerie and Franke were indeed prescient.
From what I can determine, "America's Right Turn" which is truly the definitive chronicle of how alternative media was adroitly used to bring the conservative movement to power did not gain a large audience. This is a pity since it is, indeed, a masterpiece.

Mostly good for its strategy section.......2006-05-12
If you can get past the emotionally charged one-sided political rhetoric, the strategy section is quite genius. It presents a theory on how social movements can be sparked at the grass roots level using "incendiary" issues. Richard Viguerie's effective campaigns are good evidence supporting the validity of his ideas.
Good history of the 'NEW' media........2005-08-08
To me this books title and sub-title are inconflict.
The title, 'America's Right Turn' implies to me that the overall attitudes of the country have taken a gigantic turn to more conservative rule.
The sub-title, 'How conservatives used new and alternative media to take power,' implies to me that the right wing has been able to put together a way to convince the populace in the last couple of elections to put them in office.
Yes, they did a very good job. But the left wing knows how to do this also. If you look at the last election, it was a very close election. And it was this close with fairly weak Democratic candidates. The United States does not tend to elect senators, we elect people with line management experience -- governors mostly: Bush, Clinton, Carter, Reagan. And Edwards came out as particularly weak, an ambulance chaser with little experience in anything else.
Viguerie & Franke give an excellent report on the trends in media and advertising. But remember that the liberal media they decry is constantly falling in impact. New channels have to be developed, and the right doesn't have an iron clad hold on the new.
The country isn't as 'right' as these authors believe - people want the right to have abortions, and 'Creative Science' is downright silly. But nor is the country as left as the Democrats would have you believe - people don't want gun control or 'soft on crime' any more than the right wing message.
This is a book to read for history, and for technique. Let's wait until the next election to see if the right turn is permanent.
Recommended.......2005-01-12
America's Right Turn: How Conservaties Used new And Alternative Media To Take Power by political conservative co-authors Richard A. Viguerie and David Franke is an astute evaluation of how conservative political groups in America capitalized upon alternative media - direct mail, talk radio, cable news TV, and the Internet - to spread their message, win elections and earn power. Meticulously accounting and chastizing failures among liberal political elements to seize the advantage of media revolutions, America's Right Turn is meant for liberals and conservatives alike despite the conservative bent of its authors, as it plots out winning strategies for getting one's message across and demonstrates how alternative media will determine the outcomes of future political elections more and more in the years to come. Especially recommended reading for anyone interested in personally becoming involved in political campaigns, whether as a volunteer or a professional occupation.
The How, not the Why........2004-12-22
This book gives a strong presentation on how the political right rose to prominence from the 1950s to now. The story is told by two men who were there & shaped the outcome. It's an insider's perspective I appreciate. It's an easy read, the way a walk down a gravel road in your bare feet is easy. Every once in a while you discover something sharp.
The sharpness here comes not from insight, but from the same stinging barbs hurdled at liberals which, we all know, were thrown from the left. This all sounds and feels like a child's fight, "He started it first. NO! He did." For me, it is a sad distraction.
While the How is of great interest, I want to know the Why and the What. Why did conservatism feel it could not have a say in modern politics? It has to be more than, "Those nasty New Dealers wouldn't let us have a say." And what exactly is it we are talking about? What do conservatives want that's different from liberals (& vice versa)? It's interesting to read how Schlafly defeated the ERA, but why and for what reasons.
I am searching for more, from both sides. I am looking for common ground. It isn't here, but I recommend this book to all who wish to know about the how of our current political climate.

Book Description
Towards the second half of this decade several major telescope facilities operating in the infrared submillimeter and millimeter wave bands will become operational. These missions are expected to throw much light on our understanding of the the star formation phenomenon, which is addressed as one of the primary science goals in these wave bands. This book is the proceedings of the "Cores to Clusters" workshop held at Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto during 7 - 9 October, 2004 to discuss current and future issues in star formation physics in the light of these Next Generation Telescopes.

Book Description
In published papers H A Bethe and G E Brown worked out the collapse of large stars and supernova explosions. They went on to evolve binaries of compact stars, finding that in the standard scenario the first formed neutron star always went into a black hole in common envelope evolution. C J Lee joined them in the study of black hole binaries and gamma ray bursts. They found the black holes to be the fossils of the gamma ray bursts. From their properties they could reconstruct features of the burst and of the accompanying hypernova explosions.
This invaluable book contains 23 papers on astrophysics, chiefly on compact objects, written over 23 years. The papers are accompanied by illuminating commentary. In addition there is an appendix on kaon condensation which the editors believe to be relevant to the equation of state in neutron stars, and to explain why black holes are formed at relatively low masses.

Book Description
Interstellar dust, meteorites, interplanetary dust particles (IDP's), the zodiacal light, comets, comet dust. Where do they come from, what are they made of, how do they evolve, and finally, are there connections between them? These are the questions discussed in this volume by some of the world's outstanding experts in their respective fields. The techniques used for studying the `small' solid objects of space are thoroughly discussed. Some of the methods involve a synthetic approach using the laboratory to create analog environments and materials which are believed to resemble those in space. Others use direct laboratory methods with state-of-the-art analytical tools to study the material of the objects themselves - meteorites, IDP'S. And others apply the latest in astronomical facilities to provide quantitative data on the material properties of the solids which can only be deduced from remote observations, These are compared with the laboratory results. In one instance there was a possibility to study a solar system body in situ and that was the case of comet Halley and some of the results of these studies obtained from space `laboratories' launched to meet it are discussed here. Finally, there are theoretical papers which are aimed at bridging the results of observational and laboratory methods.
This book is recommended to senior scientists as well as graduate students who wish to pursue research in interstellar and solar system astronomy and their connections.

Book Description
Starbursts are important features of early galaxy evolution. Many of the distant, high-redshift galaxies we are able to detect are in a starbursting phase, often apparently provoked by a violent gravitational interaction with another galaxy. In fact, if we did not know that major starbursts existed, these conference proceedings testify that we would indeed have difficulties explaining the key properties of the Universe! These conference proceedings cover starbursts from the small-scale star-forming regions in nearby galaxies to galaxy-wide events at high redshifts; one of the major themes of the conference proved to be "scalability", i.e., can we scale up the small-scale events to describe the physics on larger scales. The key outcome of this meeting â and these proceedings â is a resounding "yes" as answer to this fundamental, yet profound question. The enhanced synergy facilitated by the collaboration among observers using cutting-edge ground and space-based facilities, theorists and modellers has made these proceedings into a true reflection of the state of the art in this very rapidly evolving field.
Ample space is provided for summaries of the large number of talks by experts in the field, while the high-quality poster contributions are all contained on the accompanying CD-ROM, thus enhancing the information content.

Book Description
This volume deals with the most recent theories of violent star formation. It covers the formation and evolution of new stellar clusters, and explores all the possible consequences in a wide variety of objects where massive stellar bursts have occurred. It thus presents an alternative model to that which suggests supermassive black holes are the power houses of active glactic nuclei. In addition, it analyzes the impact of Wolf-Rayet stars, stellar winds and supernovae on their host galaxy, and provides evidence of massive superassociations and of supersonic velocity dispersions that result from photo-ionization by violent star formation. This book gives a valuable overview and a timely update on all aspects of violent star formation for graduate students and researchers in the field.
