Book Description

In this, his first major book, Mark Steyn--probably the most widely read, and wittiest, columnist in the English-speaking world--takes on the great poison of the twenty-first century: the anti-Americanism that fuels both Old Europe and radical Islam. America, Steyn argues, will have to stand alone. The world will be divided between America and the rest; and for our sake America had better win.

5 out of 5 stars Unfortunately True.......2007-10-14

Every single American should read this book! He explains exactly how the Muslims are conquering the world. More wives = more babies = more Muslims = more terrorism. This is a religion that should nor even exist in the 21st century. They are commanded to murder everyone that refuses to convert to Islam. Most Americans do not understand that the greatest threat to the future of the world (especially America) is the Muslim religion.

5 out of 5 stars America Alone.......2007-10-11

Every person in the USA should read this book. Today in the Dallas Morning news(10/10/07)there is an editorial by Anne Applebaum verifing one of the facts stated it this book. Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who is under death threat because of her comments about the mistreatment of women in the Dutch Muslin community had to move to the US because the Dutch say it is too expensive to protect her and she will not shut up. No free speech for her. Mohammed Bouyeri murdered the Dutch writer, Theo Van Gohg, because he made a film about the oppression of Muslim women.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, but also an important message........2007-10-11

While I cannot say that anybody reading this should have more kids just out of the guilt this book might give you, it is an important message about the sad effects of low birthrates. Mark Steyn has a quick wit and funny tone that is clearly not politically correct (good for him). Anybody who enjoys a good laugh or is concerned about terrorism should read this.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!.......2007-10-10

This book was every bit as good as I had heard. I've always enjoyed Mark Steyn, but hadn't gotten a chance to read this yet because I had a stack of books in front of it. That's my loss, because this was one of the most profound and eye-opening books I've ever read. To be honest, I pay pretty close attention to this conflict we find ourselves in, so most of the individual facts in this book weren't exactly foreign to me. But Steyn pulls all this together and presents it in such a concise, clear and entertaining way that I was able to put the pieces together in a way I hadn't even imagined. His demographic data alone is shocking, and should make every person in Europe and Canada sit up and take serious note - I'll be paying very close attention to what happens over the next few years "across the pond", as they say, for how goes Europe, so will eventually go America. I plan to buy several more copies of this book and hand them out to friends and family. I highly suggest it.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent book. Really crunches the numbers like no other book........2007-10-05

This book really lays out the problems with hard numbers and facts in a way I have never seen and is easy to understand. I recomend this book to anyone who is worried about the muslim issue. People in Europe better read it asap!

Book Description

One womanÂ's story of why she left the culture of Islamic Jihad to support American liberty and tolerance

Why are so many Muslims embracing jihad and cheering for al-Qaeda and Hamas? Why are even the modern, secularized Arab states such as Egypt producing a generation of angry young extremists?

Nonie Darwish knows why. When she was eight, her father died while leading Fedayeen raids into Israel. Her family moved from Gaza back to Cairo, where they were honored as survivors of a “shahid”—a martyr for jihad. She grew up learning the same lessons as millions of Muslim children: to hate Jews, destroy Israel, oppose America, and submit to dictatorship.

But Darwish became increasingly appalled by the anger and hatred in her culture, and in 1978 she emigrated to America. Since 9/11 she has been lecturing and writing on behalf of moderate Arabs and Arab-Americans. Extremists have denounced her as an infidel and threatened her life.

In this fascinating book, she speaks out against the dark side of her native culture—women abused by Islamic traditions; the poor and uneducated mistreated by the elites; bribery and corruption as a way of life. Her former friends and neighbors blamed all the their troubles on Jews and Americans, but Darwish rejects their bigotry and calls for the Arab world to make peace with the West.

The only hope for the future, she writes, is for America to continue waging its War on Terror, seeding the Middle East with the values of democracy, respect for women, and tolerance for all religions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome autobiography and cultural analysis.......2007-10-17

Now They Call Me Infidel is a gripping narrative of the author's journey from the upper echelons of Egyptian society to a staunch defender of the West. Like Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel, the book is part autobiography and part analysis of a severely dysfunctional culture. Unlike Ayaan, Darwish is not against the Muslim religion per se, focusing mainly on the destructive aspects of polygamy. This primitive practice harms women, men, the family and ultimately the whole culture.

She further examines the nature of modern Arab society showing how the ruling classes exploit religion in order to advance their oppressive agendas. Darwish confirms the existence of the pervasive Antisemitism that Hirsi Ali observed as a child in places like Saudi-Arabia. For examples of the Anti-Jewish hatred in the mainstream Arab press, please consult Peace: The Arabian Caricature of Anti-Semitic Imagery by Arieh Stav.

On a 2001 visit to Egypt, she noticed the illiteracy, anger and unemployment amongst ordinary people. They blame all of these problems on Israel, obviously brainwashed by the Egyptian media. There is a lack of self-criticism in Arab culture - a taboo against criticizing the family, religion or their leaders. But there's no denying that the constant drumbeat of propaganda against Israel and the USA emanates from, and has totally corrupted the educated segments of Egyptian society.

Observing how many Muslim immigrants do not appreciate Western values, the author warms against radicalism on campus and in mosques funded by petrodollars. Long ago she became aware of the two-faced behavior of Islamist radicals in the West: they speak soothing words to the clueless Western mass media whilst spewing forth hatred in their sermons and the Arab media. To Darwish, the terrorists are pirates who are intent on robbing Western democracies of their soul. She dismisses the misleading portrayal of Jihad as a "personal spiritual struggle," stating bluntly that it has always meant a religious holy war against non-Muslims.

There are many beautiful moments in the book, like her account of experiencing Christian worship for the first time, and her moving description of a visit to Israel and how it altered her perception of that brave little country. And this is the most important message of the book; for Nonie, the most valuable reward of moving to the USA was religious freedom and learning to love: "I had turned from a culture of hatred to one of love." May she be blessed.

5 out of 5 stars An Informative Perspective.......2007-09-15

If you're like me, you might know very little about Mideastern culture and life. This book is a highly readable and personal account of one woman's life, experiences and views on Muslim culture. I'm enjoying it; she puts a "human face" on this part of the world and it's issues.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening insights into the causes of Islamic extremism........2007-09-11

The author grew up in Egypt under Nasser's dictatorship, but later moved to America. Her father was an Egyptian military officer killed in Gaza by Israel because he organized raids to cause mayhem inside Israel. She reports on the problems in Egypt and Gaza, and on the government and religious propaganda which is polarizing the Islamic world to the point of Jihad. This is an eye-opening read, and it gives insight into how difficult it will be to ever correct this problem.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-09-01

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO TRULY UNDERSTAND HOW THE MIDDLE EAST FEALS ABOUT AMERICA AND WHY. NONIE DARWISH IS A VERY BRAVE WOMAN AND I THANK GOD SHE HAD THE GUTS TO WRITE THE TRUTH.

5 out of 5 stars Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I renounced Jihad for America, Israel and the War on Terror.......2007-08-25

This is an excellen book for those seeking to understand Arab Muslim perspectives. The culture is based on a background, history and value system entirely foreign to our way of thinking. The author relates her life from early childhood, through her school years and early adulthood living first in Gaza then Cairo. She is from the upper middle class, the daughter of a high ranking military officer who is martyred. She describes what it is like to be a woman in the arab muslim world. She raises the issuesleading to a lack of trust both within the society and in relation to other societies. She discusses the inner thinking and the daily propaganda regarding Israel. She also gives important information on the Arab view of Palestines role in the conflict. She distinguishes between the radical Islamic movements and moderate Islam. She notes the purpose and intent of fundalmentalist Islam is the eventual overtaking the world. She discusses how this is being taken to countries throughout the world to bring about this change. We need to understand those with whom we are dealing. This is a book that is easy to read, direct and highly informative.

Book Description

In War Crimes, Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Buzz” Patterson (USAF, Ret.) lays bare the Left’s campaign against their own nation’s armed forces—in the media, on campuses, in popular culture, in Washington, and elsewhere, revealing:

·The roots of liberal enmity toward our military
·The five liberal lies about the war on terror
·How the mainstream media, Hollywood, and academia perpetuate these myths
·How liberal politicians engage in seditious acts for political gain, and what the costs of these acts are
·How America can and must defeat the liberal assault on America’s ability to defend itself against its enemies

Interviews with hundreds of soldiers, sailors, and airmen—including many on the ground in Iraq—reveal the alarming degree to which their burden is increased by second-guessing, pessimism, and outright revulsion for their mission on the part of the people they are fighting for. Studded with shocking quotations and astonishing actions from members of the Left, War Crimes is an eye-opening indictment of the true motivations and agenda of the American Left.

Buzz has given fact, after fact accompanied by tremendous evidence..His critics can only give us argument ad hominem, and broad generalities..They have no counter arguments...The emptiness of their writings show how we can not trust such people with our government...

4 out of 5 stars The Facts Speak For Themselves.......2007-09-06

While I was in Iraq, I routinely saw news coverage and heard statements by celebrities, politicians, intellectuals and activists which were so diametrically opposed to the reality that I saw on the ground that I truly wondered whether we shared the same planet. While terrorists murdered children on the streets of Bahgdad, activists accused us of atrocities. When Americans who had been captured and murdered were recovered, almost invariably after torture, the media barely acknowledged it, while focusing intently on Abu Ghraib. I understood that they opposed the war, but I was not prepared to make the argument that they were committing treason. LTC (R) Patterson has done so. In War Crimes, he sets out to demonstrate that the antiwar left is not simply a "peace" movement, but a group of dangerous radicals who seek to actively destroy the capacity of the United States to defend itself. In this, he breaks very little new ground, in that most of the quotes or stories recounted have been in the media for years. What makes War Crimes valuable is that it is a single source and provides not only a recounting of those stories, but a detailed bibliography and endnotes which allow independent corroboration. The meticulous research alone is worth it. In addition, the appendix provides accounts of every major terrorist action since the fall of the Shah. By combining not only a detailed history of terrorism and documenting the responses by the left, LTC Patterson does the service of providing a context in which the actions of the Michael Moores and Nancy Pelosis can be objectively evaluated. The downside is that there is a great deal of repetition, which could have been solved by a tighter edit.

Those who read this book with an open-mind will be unable to deny the treasonous nature of the antiwar movement. Those who refuse to read it but condemn it out of hand already know the nature of the left, even as they refuse to admit it.

1 out of 5 stars another trashy novel from the buzzer.......2007-09-01

Buzz has written another trashy piece of fiction that will entertain all the Limbaugh, Hannity, and other fox news apologists on the right. I retired as an air Force 05 just like Buzz. I flew C-130's and he flew 141's. Unlike Buzz I've acually taken part in this war. While the democrats might have voted to give GWB the option of going to war they've had little or nothing to do with the conduct of this war. Blaming anyone other than the republican congress and the Bush administration for what has turned out to be an expensive disaster is folly. The decision to send our courageous military men and women to Iraq to give their lives borders on criminal. You think the French were ungrateful after WW2? Just wait, you haven't seen anything yet. My advice to you Buzz for what it is worth is to use your Air Force academy training to write an intelligent, thoughtful, well balanced book for once in your life.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2007-08-24

Freedom of speech, the privilege of every American citizen, gets a workout in Buzz Patterson's latest book. Finally, this privilege, won and preserved by the courage and sacrifice of millions of U.S. service men and women over the years, is used to voice something other than disdain for those same individuals.

Enroute to making his case against the left's "Fifth Column", Patterson chronicles some of the more jaw-dropping statements made by an assortment of liberal politicians, academicians, and celebrities since 9/11. These rants, usually spewed for their shock value, suggest a lack of maturity among these government, thought, and cultural "leaders" that is as shocking as their actual words. They also support the author's premise that there exists among the left a loathing of America's military.

As with all of Patterson's books, War Crimes is well researched, logical, and very well-written. Patterson uses examples of military heroism and statements from his interview subjects as counterpoints to the unbelievable, yet documented, proclamations of liberal elected officials, teachers, and Hollywood activists. War Crimes was a refreshing read in this town where one is as likely to stumble upon a Cindy Sheehan-led anti-war rally as an American flag!

1 out of 5 stars This book betrays our military.......2007-08-21

Buzz is an apologist for the Republicans - big time. He cherry picks statements and then uses them to generally smear the left and democrats.

Buzz would have you believe that the democrats and the left are destroying our military and his book sets out to prove that. He doesn't get there, of course, and engages in a lot of stretching and deception to make his point.

His book ignores the incredible damage to our military by the Bush administration (Republicans - fancy that) including deploying troops without enough equipment, extending rotations to breaking point and failing to care for veterans.

But the real offensive thing about this book is that by apologising for such failures (or seeking to blame the democrats for everything) Buzz is condoning such treatment of our men and women in uniform. And that is a hell of a thing to do in order to score a cheap political point!

Book Description

For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way AmericaÂ's past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of AmericaÂ's patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.”

As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin.

A PatriotÂ's History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, AmericaÂ's discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of AmericaÂ's true and proud history.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Arrogance and denial aren't befitting a "patriot.".......2007-08-12

The political deception of this book is remarkable. As another reviewer has suggested, reading a book or two by Chalmers Johnson would be helpful. The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic (The American Empire Project)
This book is a study in narcissism. To be a "patriot" doesn't mean to be a mindless flag-waving drone daily whistling Yankee Doodle Dandy and listening to Hannity and his audience tell each other what "great Americans/good Germans" they are.
Patriotism, at least, a mature version of it, means educating yourself about the problems of your country and working to transform them. That's the true patriotism one can find in the books of World War II veteran Howard Zinn. People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present (P.S.) The corporate establishment doesn't want people to learn about the struggles for labor improvements, civil rights, and peace that the matrix of the establishment wants to bury.
Both Columbus's' "great discovery" and the so-called "war on terror" are a continuation of the war on indigenous people that Western "civilization" desperately needs to call off. Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples' Resistance to Globalization

I don't understand the need some have to absorb fake news like that of Fox, or fake histories like that of Schweikart. Is it a lack of courage to face reality, an odd definition of being a "patriot," an unhealthy obedience to authority? Whatever it is, I hope right-wingers who are interested in the welfare of their country can move beyond it, and adopt a more honest perspective about the history and political economy of the world around them. If not for themselves, than for future generations.
Howard Zinn - You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train

3 out of 5 stars Yup! Fair and Balance like Bill O'Reilly. .......2007-07-06

Do the authors actually believe leftists are fabricating how so called "Patriotric" causes will lead to our countries demise? Read any recent book by Chalmers Johnson....he's NOT a leftist, he's not a "hater" and guess what he says?..... Never mind you all just go ahead and keep believing that White Anglo Saxon Males and the U.S. Empire are the real victims.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, and a bit of a page turner.......2007-06-27

I am a history buff (with an undergrad degree in history), politically moderate, and rather patriotic so it seemed like this book was targeted at me. Nonetheless, I was a bit skeptical when I purchased this book, expecting a version of American history littered with right-wing excesses as egregious as the left-wing exagerations and historical mistruths I'd encountered in previous historical reading.

And I was quite pleasantly surprised.

This book served as a great reminder to me that there is a lot that is both amazing and praiseworthy about America while presenting what I believe to be a fairly unslanted view of American history. My academic study and historical pleasure reading is usually fairly focused; it had been a long time since I'd thought holistically about the history of America, and this book does that very well, telling a story with a consistent theme. And that theme is that America is unique in its history, and while it is not (and certainly never has been) perfect, America is responsible for far more good in the world than bad. This book will make you proud of US history, without resorting to tricks and gimmicks.

There are indictments of numerous gaffs by revisionist historians over the past 60 years. These indictments are necessary to this book's mission, as what was once revisionist has successfully become the mainstream version of US history taught in elementary, high school, and college curriculums. And in many ways, these indictments are the best part of this book, as they are written insightfully, backed up with facts, and caused more introspection about my own views on US history than any history book I've read since college.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but flawed.......2007-06-13

The approach is novel. It's good to see a book without the usual liberal slant (even if it slants the other way).

However, I cannot give the book five starts because of the obscene number of factual errors. As early as page 4, the book states that Columbus gave Cuba the name Hispaniola. In fact, Columbus named Cuba (the name given to it by the natives) "Juana" after Princess Juana of Spain. That is not a widely known fact, BUT I am nevertheless amazed by the authors' mistake since I did not think there were any educated people (let alone two professors of history) who did not know that Hispaniola was the name of the island that comprises the present-day countries of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The authors confuse James I with Charles I, give the wrong year for Washington's inauguration as the first President, incorrectly claim that John Harvard founded Harvard College, give conflicting dates for the invention of the cotton gin, and claim that Alaska became a state in 1958 rather than 1959.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed.......2007-05-13

After reading this book I felt like I had taken a series of Masters Degree courses in American History. I like hearing from the perspective of authors who believe that our country has blemishes on it's past, but is one of the greatest forces for good in our world.

2 out of 5 stars A one-star title for a 3-star book.......2007-09-07

Beinart would have been better off keeping the title to the first three words instead of promising something he does not deliver, and thus the average of the title and contents gets this book two stars.
Beinart does a good job of showing that Truman and Reagan had far more in common when it came to foreign policy than any of the Democrat standard bearers since JFK.
While the historical notes about the Cold War and what the Democrats did before Vietnam are fairly accurate, the book departs from reality in explaining what the Democrat Party stands for today vs. 50 years ago.
Beinart is living in a fantasy world if he thinks that the current generation of Democrat Party leaders can abandon the billionaires and Hollywood elites, not to mention the illegal contributions from foreign nationals, who support them from the left. He really does not deliver a single policy proposal that any Democrat candidate could possibly support in today's world, and he really doesn't deliver a policy proposal at all. Citing the Clinton administration intervention in a teacup like the Balkans with massive deadly air strikes on a part of the world with little strategic importance to anyone is not something that has any relevance in the rest of the world, especially the Middle East. If the Balkan experience had any strategic value, in spite of a 500 year history of "ethnic cleansing" it has been far surpassed by 9/11, and the attacks on the US that were ignored by the Democrats going back to bin Laden's fatwas of 1996 and 1998 declaring war on the USA and other infidels.
This might have been a good book if Beinart weren't so wedded to a Democrat Party that no longer exists. But he is, so this book isn't much of an answer to anything

5 out of 5 stars Conservatives may want to fight this fight too. I'd vote for him!.......2007-08-13

Peter Beinart's ideas seem to reflect my own, and I wish more of our leaders were thinking along these lines. Moral clarity in our response to the salafists, Qatb's children as he calls the jihadists, does not mean we need to take a simple a-historical stance toward them. "The Good Fight" is filled with history.

But that we do need to fight against our enemies is the underlying assumption of this book. If we try to keep ourselves morally pure by criticizing America from the sidelines we lose and are not pure. Besides, as we fight we shape who we are. His narrative of the successful and decerning response of leading liberal Democrats (the ones who won the day) to post WWII communism gave me back some pride in American liberalism. For all our criticisms of America, the weight of our energy has to be on fighting our enemies for the sake of our values.

The way we do this is important, of course, and Beinart points to the need for go beyond a managerial technocrat model of problem-solving that Kerry and others seemed to present when they ran for president. Moral clarity, deep pride in our American values, a realization that we can't take ourselves for granted...Beinart traces these back to a more confident liberalism, a liberalism not so much determined to win against the other party but one that actually believed in something: in fighting --in accord with our best light-- against evil and for good.

1 out of 5 stars We can win a war that doesn't exist!.......2007-07-14

Liberals continually claim that the war on terror is completely made up by George W in order to get oil, somehow, for somebody- the facts aren't always clear. Yet here is a book that claims only liberals can win the war on terror. Liberals must be pretty talented if they're going to win a war that doesn't exist. First they would have to acknowledge it exists. The title also says, "Make America great again." Since when did liberals think this country was great? All you ever hear from them is how America is evil and has always been evil. All we hear about are Indians, slavery, repressed women, repressed gays, wars, etc. So by this title alone, Peter Beinart has certainly showed that he may not be a liberal after all.

2 out of 5 stars The Good Fight, The Bad Fight, poorly reasoned.......2007-03-09

Beinart spends a significant amount of time on his interpolation of history. It is an enlightening view of a view of history and will give people a window into the ideology of the writer. Every writer approached a subject with his or her bias, Beinart is no exception.

He would like to remind Americans that we are flawed, far from perfect and need to view ourselves as far from perfect. In several paragraphs he points out that the liberals are willing to see our flaws and acknowledge that we aren't right. This perspective is required to allow a moral equivalence to be assigned to any other society. He also pointed out one of the sins of Reagan was that he played on American ego and told us that the left was wrong, we are a great nation and that socialism goes hand and hand with totalitarianism.

America does some things aboard that are in her national interest. Beinart believes we should acknowledge this. He also makes that incredible assertion that we didn't offer enough aid fast enough to Indonesia after the devastation from the tsunami. I believe that facts are against him on that one.

Beinart talks about the magnificent nation building capabilities of the UN as opposed to America's lack of nation building capability. Beinart seems to believe that by not relying on the UN to guide us, we lost help. Beinart mentions Kosovo and Rawanda as nations the UN helped to build after they had fallen. He doesn't mention that those efforts have gone poorly and are currently past the ten year mark and still on going. Again, Beinart has written this with a bias and does not mention the corruption in the UN. He also doesn't mention that inaction by the UN allowed the Rawandin genocide and that in Kosovo, more suffering at the hands of Muslims is occuring. Not good examples to site.

Beinart also points out that Kerry and the other liberals campaigned on fighting a smarter war, and that mistakes were made in Iraq. Then he points out that no plan was ever put forward. As a matter of fact, it was pointed out several times and in his writings he points out that he has never seen the plan either. He mentions that at a campaign event all the personnel were waiting to hear a plan, but none was given leading him to a belief that they needed to tell people what their plan was if there was a plan.

He also points out that the liberals along with the UN and others have fought against the war from the start. UN. Beinart doesn't mention that the UN and members of the UN were actively involved with the Oil For Food scandal. He also fails to point out that UN has actively campaigned against the war from the beginning. Last but not least, he sees these attacks and corruption and says that the conservatives are to blame because the conservatives didn't attempt to appease these people or give up power to them and allow them to run things.

Beinart talks about the world view, then the Iraq current view that the US is there for imperialistic reasons. He says we have done little to convince them that we are not imperialist however he points to innuendo and sites no cases. He speaks about Micheal Moore and he even hints that Moore is wrong. What Beinart doesn't acknowledge is that the left, the liberals and the UN have been out on the air waves and the TV telling the world it was an imperialist act since the war started. Our own senators have gotten on TV and published articles about the US being Imperialist. Charely Rangel, John Kerry and others continuely and reflexively call the war an illegal war in every TV appearance. Three years of having our liberal senators, liberal press and UN call this an illegal war and occupation will aid the enemy. Beinart simply does not acknowledge this and puts the blame on the conservatives.

Beinart, as a liberal says little more than the liberals keep saying. America has no legitimacy because we are flawed and we can't own up to the fact that we are flawed. Beinart actually says we need to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the UN. That would be the UN with Kofi Annan whose son made money on the oil for food program. He does mention that some choices are muddy and there is not a good clean way to fight a war without some issues, he simply says it. He doesn't seem to understand exactly what he said.

He does spend time explaining that the liberals have made some terrible mistakes in showing what they stand for. He points out that many of the liberals vote solely based on what would get them elected but not on principal. Beinart also makes the old canard about intellectual liberal versus the conservative who is not intellectual or educated. Wow.

Beinart spends a few pages talking about John Kerry and attempting to explain why he didn't get elected. He talks about the swift boat vets as "republican attack machine". What Beinart has left out is that the founder of the Swift Boat Vets argued with John Kerry on National TV 30 years prior to this election. The argument, contrary to Beinarts assertion concerning John Kerry's medals or injuries was about something Beinart didn't even mention. It was about what Kerry said when he got back. Kerry held the winter soldier hearings and most of the people who testified about atrocities the saw or performed in Vietnam had never been in the military or been to Vietnam. Beinart is barking up the wrong tree here.

Beinart really does point out the liberal view that America is a deeply flawed country with poor values. His view of America is one of continual American intervention over seas has damaged the world. That our enemies are our enemies, not because they are irrational and just hate the way we live, but because we didn't pay them enough. In the last chapter of the book he recommends we spend more money to develop these countries. Somehow the argument seems hollow. If intervening by the US is bad, why would using our money to develop markets not be intervening? We have been doing that in Iraq and Afghanistan, but Beinart does not acknowledge this and it makes him seem insincere and more partisan.

Book Description

A manifesto for an aggressive liberal response to terrorist attacks. "A fluid and lucid essay by one of America's best exponents of recent intellectual history."—The Economist

One of our most brilliant public intellectuals, Paul Berman has spent his career writing on revolutionary movements and their totalitarian aspects. Here he argues that, in the terror war, we are not facing a battle of the West against Islam—a clash of civilizations. We are facing, instead, the same battle that tore apart Europe during most of the twentieth century, only in a new version. It is the clash of liberalism and its enemies—the battle between freedom and totalitarianism that arose in Europe many years ago and spread to the Muslim world.

The author considers the wars against fascism and communism from the past, and draws cautionary lessons. But he also draws from those past experiences a liberal program for the present—a program that departs in fundamental respects from the policies of the Bush administration.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting viewpoint........2007-10-16

The "liberalism" referred to in the title refers to a liberal society, a society that encourages individual freedom, debate and dissent, some separation of religion and government. Most of the Western world (US, Canada, Europe, etc.) consists of liberal societies; countries like Nazi Germany, the former USSR, or Saudi Arabia definitely are not.

Berman links the anarchists and nihilists of the late 19th and early 20th century, to the political assassinations in Russia, Europe and the United States (one of which started World War I), through Fascism (Germany/Italy/Spain), Communism (Russia) and the Axis-aligned pan-Arabism of the Middle East, all the way to the current Islamic extremism. All of these movements have in common an obsession with suicide and murder.

A lot of space is given to Sayyad Qutb's writings, and his unwillingness to accept liberal society, due to the limited influence of religion (any religion) therein. Instead, Qutb thought that all societies should be Shariah (Islamic) law. Secular Muslims (Ataturk) as well as non-Muslims (Jews and Christians, mostly) represented a threat to Islam and had to be dealt with--one way or another. Berman links the philosophies of Qutb to the actions of Saddam Hussein, Ayatollah Khomeini, and Al Qaeda.

An interesting point of view, although I'm not 100% convinced that everything can be so easily explained.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable thesis, but is it worth a book?.......2007-07-08

While his is a reasonable thesis and nicely written, Berman must have been under a rock for the past 30 years not to have noticed the growth in illiberalism. It is important for ideas and movements to be challenged by their own I concede, but I would have been more impressed if he had used his insider status and sensitivity to more critically examine the reasons why illiberalism took hold rather than just acknowledging its presence. Nevertheless it is courageous to challenge orthodoxy and requires a rare kind of honesty, and people with these traits can play a crucial role in an open society.

4 out of 5 stars Liberalism as the solution, is a conservative approach.......2007-06-03

This approach to looking both at "Terror" and "Liberalism" is different, and is a pleasant surprise. Liberalism seems, in this presentation, to represent democracy and all that is good about our system rather than a critique of the system itself. Terror is dissected and motive is found. Influence is identified. Terror seems to be the natural outcome of Totalitarianism. Communism, Nazism. These "ism's" and Islamic Extremism are seen to be alike in the impact on the individual. Totalitarism is the common thread explored. Albert Camus's writings are used as a mode of expanding this insight. His book, "The Rebel" is quoted where it traced the things about modern civilization that had lead to totalitarianism. Another author, Noam Chomsky, leftist writings are explored and to see it done by what seems like an author who would be expected to be coming from the far left himself is very interesting. I found in some ways this book to be making a basic conservative claim. William Buckley's first literary success was "God and Man at Yale". How ironic that today this book comes down in many ways to the same key point of this earlier book. Buckley's claim was that "the dual between Christianity and atheism is the most important in the world". He added that he "believed that the struggle between individualism and collectivism is the same struggle reproduced on another level". Berman's view on where the struggle today with Islamism will lead and why it is a struggle are well worth reading. I enjoyed the insight that this book offered. Some may feel that the author's definition of liberalism has narrowed a more traditional direction but even if that is true it was well worth reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced, Informative, insightful.......2007-04-27

The negative reviewers of this book fail to judge the book on its merits.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly easy to read.......2007-03-23

Those authors who seem to lead the reader all over the place tend to ho-hum the reader into stopping from boredom or irritation - most of the time. This one is quite different, for a really heavy work, as it will be hard to find places to put the book down. The author does seem to lead the discussion all over the place, especially (and unfortunately!) in the beginning. Yet he develops and focuses his points within a reasonable enough number of paragraphs later to keep the thread going. The writing style is smooth, and even urbane, sometimes like the flow of those correspondents of the 1950's.

The many serious reviewers seen on this Amazon website have captured the mains points Paul Berman makes through the book, so they needn't be repeated in detail here. Many of these reviews are well-written and thoughtful, and should be looked at before deciding to buy the book, or checked out from the library. Two general conclusions from Terror and Liberalism seem most important: (1) both left and right radicalism usually boils to the same nihilistic thing; and (2) ignorance of the "cult of death" end point for these radicals could harm us all.

Only on two topics in particular does Berman seem oddly inconsistent: one is Israel and Zionism, and the other is George W. Bush. By the time the reader is done with the book, though, both can be taken into stride, and the author is forgiven.

Book Description

They are coddled and well-groomed. They chase after the latest scandal and then run around in crazy circles, using the TV studio as their show ring and wee-wee pad. There is no controversy they can't trivialize, no issue they can't vulgarize. They obey their political masters and betray the trust of the audience with every bark. They're the attack poodles-a new breed of celebrity pundit. Wisecracking and impassioned, Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants laces into an all-star cast of blowhard egotists who pound our eardrums and insult our intelligence: Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough, Peggy Noonan, Dennis Miller, Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson. But it also delves below the surface squall of infotainment to show how attack poodles function as pets of the Republican party, guard dogs for George Bush, and tail-waggers for war. In the iconoclastic spirit of Michael Moore's Stupid White Men, Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, and Molly Ivins' Bushwhacked, Attack Poodles makes serious fun of the pack mentality that has taken over politics and the press in this country and urges us to rip off our blindfolds before it's too late.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent fun at the expense of the dark side.......2005-10-18

If you just read the description of this book you will almost immediately know if you will like it. It's not a scholarly, thoughtful meditation on media bias. It's a glorious lambasting of the forces of propaganda and mediocrity. Walcott is mad and more than willing to let that show. He's not pretending to want people to get along, he's hollering that the emperor has no clothes.

Reading it I would the style light and blog-like. But without the laziness that blogs usually entail. Walcott has taken a light idea and sculpted it marvellously. His turns of phrase are a joy and never felt overdone. And his targets are passionately deserving of their pummelling.

Simply put, if you think you might like this book, you will. If you don't, you won't.

1 out of 5 stars What Happened, James?.......2005-08-11

I remember James Wolcott as the wonderful television critic for the "Village Voice" in the early 1980's who first alerted me to the glory that was "SCTV." Back in those days he had a genuinely exciting, hilarious wit and a contagious enthusiasm for the stuff he liked and wanted to share with you, the reader. He was also something of an iconoclast at the "Voice"; he would occasionally say a kind word about Reagan. For these sins his column was cut down from weekly to once a month, so he had to share the space with more politically orthodox writers. We need more diverse voices about TV, he was told. "I thought I was the diversity", he said, and left the paper.

He cut a swath through big-time New York journalism; "the New Republic", "the New Yorker", "Vanity Fair." He could even publish book reviews in "The New Criterion", the neo-conservative arts journal. He published a semi-autobiographical novel, "The Catsitters", about a hick from the sticks who tries to make it in the big city. At this point he still seemed like was going in a good direction and knew what he was doing. And then came the massive shock of 9/11, and Wolcott was never the same. He quickly became the single most shrill leftist voice in the media and soon, the blogs.

"Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants" shows the new Wolcott at his most depressing. The wit has been replaced with crude character assassination. The red states, from which Wolcott himself once sprang, are mirthlessly ridiculed with relentless Vanity Fair snobbery. Shades of gray don't exist for him; the only true wisdom resides in the frothing mobs of Moveon.org and Daily Kos. I hope I am not alone in mourning the demise of a once great talent; a brilliant journalist who has decided to turn himself into the left-wing version of Westbrook Pegler.

4 out of 5 stars Why Terrorists are winning the supposed "War on Terror".......2005-07-14

Wolcott offers a hilarious but sad look at how our media has become nothing more than one sided propaganda. Just under 4 years ago, Bush made an empty promise to capture Bin laden dead or alive and it hasn't happened and even after the recent bombings in London, he made the same empty promise. The Iraq war mess is no better as the media is doing all they can to defend Bush's Iraq war despite the glaring evidence that it wasn't worth it. My only complaint is that the author does not make known the fact that us average Joe and Mary six-pack voters are still resigned to these leaders and the media despite all their flaws. It's not that the voters are informed about the truth but that they are purposely misinformed about the truth. Why would the media go on a wild goose chase covering the Chandra Levy missing case throughout the summer of 2001 while at the same time ignoring the glaring dangers of potential terrorists who ended up destroying the two towers in Manhatten and part of the Pentagon in D.C. ? Or for that matter, why else would the same media that ignores the ever increasing dangers and failures presented by Bush's Iraq War choose to give more air time to Michael Jackson and Scott Peterson? I would have appreciated it if the author had talked about why the voters and the Democrats are not standing up to the corrupt kon-servative media and government and holding them accountable. Other than that, I think this book is a beginning step to correctly informing the misinformed.

1 out of 5 stars into the paranoid fantasy land..........2005-06-18

More of the same from that crowd whose volume and omnipresence belie their actual numbers. Yet another example of how dissent is being stifled by the evil Karl Rove and his minions! The amazing thing is that the only yappers Wolcott finds so contemptible are the ones with a conservative viewpoint. These are the only know-it-all pundits that have no business yapping, apparently. No mention of Chris Matthews, Air America, or Dan Rather--these are all crusading truthseekers i suppose. In any event, for all of you who are into this type of self-congratulatory, exclusive knowledge of how the United States has become a dictatorship by electing people that all these writers, singers, journalists, and otherwise pampered elites with bully pulpits don't like, I'd like to ask one question: Does this paranoid fantasy land that you and your faction have carved out for yourselves enrich your lives on any level whatsoever? To just blindly believe in cut-and-paste conspiracy theories so you can sleep easily knowing that the evil empire isn't fooling you? Man, you people should relax. Find a new obsession, because this one's irrelevant and just a shameful waste. History will ultimately tell us the full truth, but in the meantime, for a bunch of moral relativists you sure have gotten apocolyptic on us. Sheesh.

5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2005-05-20

It shouldn't be such a surprise to anyone: news organizations play nice with the powers that be or they lose access. While this isn't new to the Bush administration it's gotten a lot worse since 2000. Actually there are two and only two sources of liberal news right now: Air America Radio and Pacifica Radio. Everyone else is in a big hurry to appease and cajole the GOP. The result: we get skewed news and are encouraged to stick our heads in the proverbial political sand. And while we do that terrorists with eyes wide open plot to attack us. So long as Bush and his attack poodles come out looking good, it's all right by them.

Book Description

Neo-liberalism has become the most influential ideology of our times. It guides both Democratic and Republican policies and, increasingly, those of European and developing countries worldwide. In The Terror of Neoliberalism, influential cultural critic Henry Giroux assesses the impact of neoliberalism and points to better approaches to building real democracy.

Neoliberalism, too commonly regarded an economic theory, is a complex of values, ideologies, and practices that work more broadly as a 'cultural field'.; Giroux argues that its cultural dimensions erode the public participation that is the very foundation of democratic life. Under neoliberal policies, Giroux shows, populations are increasingly denied the symbolic, educational, and economic capital necessary for engaged citizenship. Giroux assesses the impact of neoliberalism on the language of democracy, race, education, and the media, offering alternatives necessary to restore our democratic institutions.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone should have a working understanding of Neoliberalism........2006-03-30

Henry A. Giroux's discussion of the current state of the American political environment and its neoliberal policy design has proven to be an excellent introduction and analysis of the motivations, resulting consequences, and possible future of a country afflicted with a cold, uncompassionate, and simplistic political, cultural, and militaristic direction. The Terror of Neoliberalism is a well-researched illumination of the current American political administration's real motivations and the policy, that which is now known as neoliberalism, which is being used to forward their agenda. Giroux draws on a two centuries' worth of progressive thinkers to form a coherent and cogent exposé of the latest trends in an economic capitalist system that has achieved an unfettered, deregulated, and unrestricted state never before seen. Drawing on the tome of knowledge produced by the likes of profound Marxists thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Ernst Bloch, and Jacques Derrida as well as the likes of engaged public intellectuals like the late Edward Said and Noam Chomsky, Giroux has formulated an eye-opening critique of contemporary America.

The strengths of the book lie within its ability to connect neoliberalism and its policy initiatives with the real life affects and consequences of its execution. Giroux discusses many aspects of complex American identities affected by these schemes, which include cultural, educational, racial, militaristic, and commercial realms. I believe that The Terror of Neoliberalism provides both the inexperienced reader and the engaged academic citizen with explanations and examples regarding neoliberalism's design and results of its implementation. Giroux does, what I consider, a wonderful job of tying together the American neoliberal policy environment with its resultant views of a newly designed racism, an abandonment of the future of the country through a disregard, mistrust, and neglect of youth, as well as the insipid nature of neoliberalism's absolute invasion of the culture arguably leading toward a new type of authoritarianism.

Unfortunately, Giroux finds himself repeating sections of the book verbatim throughout many of the chapters, which frustrates the flow of the reading and interrupts the continuity of the text. While these misgivings can be overlooked and the message of the book still readily grasped and undeniably appreciated, I have also found that the book lacks a good historical understanding of the origin and evolution of the neoliberal movement. This movement often traced back to the leadership of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, but arguably traced back further to the post-WWII era with the establishment of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund as well as the execution of the Marshall Plan is largely ignored in the book. While I find this to be a fundamental flaw in a text that works to elucidate a developing and frightening neoliberal tradition, the text still does an excellent job of providing the reader with a contemporary understanding of the terrifying outcomes of this policy design.

Giroux's book is admirable in its avoidance of defeatism in the face of an extremely well executed attack on civic freedom, critical intellectualism, and general welfare-state necessity. The Terror of Neoliberalism does not just leave the reader in a state of disbelief and depression at the harsh reality of American life, but provides the reader with an understanding of both how to critique the current political environment, and advice as well as theoretical designs for how to organize and resist its seeping infiltration of every aspect of life. Readers of Giroux's book will hopefully find themselves outraged and at the same time motivated to change the environment which they have been presented.

4 out of 5 stars Time to save human race running out.......2005-07-22

This book is essential, but be warned, it is almost relentlessly grim.

As it should be, for it paints the United States as a country spinning away from any semblance of an actual, functioning democracy and into a web where capitalism is the new democracy and public participation in the phenomenon that shape our lives is largely removed or rendered a cynical joke. Giroux examines neoliberalism as the main 'philosophy' or force that has driven the USA toward a more private society where the social contract is chipped away, job, life, and health security are weakened to strengthen authority, inequality has gone through the roof, and of course, money rules. That it's now easier to imagine the end of the world before the end of the current strain of capitalism (which has pretty much replaced democracy) just about says it all.

Giroux covers the erosion of public debate, where the complete corruption of terms neutralizes discussion and discourages thinking ('conservative', 'liberal', 'terrorism', etc, etc), the slow death of public space, public service, and the obsessive privatization of life, and other major phenomenon you never hear about in the news because you'd probably want to kill yourself, or do something about it.

He's certainly not off point, if anything, he's rightfully disgusted about the state of affairs. Where is the outrage, he asks. As for the Bush administration, it's not new, it's just more extreme in its vision of an 'ownership society' and in the empty rhetoric of 'rugged individualism' and 'freedom from the government' that is, of course, a weapon against the common schlep who can only increase their human value by positioning themselves as profit-generators. The poor subsidize the rich, absorbing risk while the dough pours into the same few pockets. Everybody else can rent themselves out to whoever decides to keep jobs in the USA, where we endlessly consume while producing less and less. And the government, well, it's this terrible, meddlesome, flabby entity that should be cut down to size because it's restricting all of us. Unless, of course, that same government works overtime to protect the rich from the market forces that would destroy them as it bails out failing companies, enacts tariffs, and gives huge breaks to those who need it least so that we can all survive but hiring ourselves out to the same folks. If you're lucky, maybe you can work at a nice suburban office park that your favorite credit card or cell phone company has decided to establish in your area.

Judging by this sober assessment, the US of A is heading down the tubes, and fast. What does one do? The time to act is now, it seems, though our choices are fewer and fewer. When we're all sitting in front of a computer for 8-10 hours a day doing intellectually bankrupt work for pathological institutions that threaten to toss us out because we don't fit into their Excel columns, cost too much to take care of because of a massively inefficient health care system, and are subject to huge phenomenon that nobody really bothers to address in the pursuit of cash, I guess we can all hope we're near the blast radius when mankind decides to finally blow up the world.

Not the most cheerful book, it's a cold, hard look at what has happened to the state of democracy in the USA, and how the forces of capital have boxed and wrapped every facet of life, destroying anything the founding fathers had in mind. Time to go live in the woods.

    Book Description

President Bush was roundly criticized for likening America’s antiterrorism measures to a “crusade” in 2001. Far from just a gaffe, however, such medievalism has become a dominant paradigm for comprehending the identity and motivations of America’s perceived enemy in the war on terror. Yet as Bruce Holsinger argues here, this cloying post-9/11 rhetoric has served to obscure the more intricate ideological machinations of neomedievalism, the global idiom of the non-state actor: non-governmental organizations, transnational corporate militias, and terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda.

Neomedievalism, Neoconservatism, and the War on Terror addresses the role of neomedievalism in contemporary politics. While international-relations theorists promote neomedievalism as a model for understanding emergent modes of global sovereignty, neoconservatives exploit its conceptual slipperiness for their own tactical ends. Holsinger concludes with a careful parsing of the Bush administration’s torture memos, which enlist neomedievalism’s model of feudal sovereignty on behalf of the abrogation of human rights.

    Book Description

In his new book Monsters to Destroy: The Neoconservative War on Terror and Sin, Ira Chernus tackles the question of why U.S. foreign policy, aimed at building national security, has the paradoxical effect of making the country less safe and secure. His answer: The “war on terror” is based not on realistic appraisals of the causes of conflict, but rather on “stories” that neoconservative policymakers tell about human nature and a world divided between absolute good and absolute evil. The root of the stories is these policymakers’ terror of the social and cultural changes that swept through U.S. society in the 1960s. George W. Bush and the neoconservatives cast the agents of change not simply as political opponents, but as enemies or sinners acting with evil intent to destroy U.S. values and morals—that is, as “monsters” rather than human beings. The war on terror transfers that plot from a domestic to a foreign stage, making it more appealing even to those who reject the neoconservative agenda at home. Because it does not deal with the real causes of global conflict, it harms rather than helps the goal of greater national security.

    5 out of 5 stars Neocons exposed.......2007-01-09

Professor Chernus deserves a much wider readership for his analysis. He ties evangelical theology and neo-conservative philosophy together and shows the influence of each on our country's leadership throughout the past decades.

I was jolted and revolted at the blatantly arrogant imperialism of the leading neo-conservative intellectual writers quoted throughout this book. If the administration had not been "thumped" by the voters since the publication of "Monsters", I would have found it too depressing. As it is, I hope that more people will read this and spread the word.

I was disturbed (before reading this account) that the president could continue making speeches that claimed that our enemies hated freedom, and we loved freedom, and that's why we were fighting...and that the public swallowed this rhetoric. Prof. Chernus explores how these labels get adopted and what they come to mean. I found it to be an eye-opening exercise.

The key premise of the book is that our current leaders are all working from a myth that we Americans are heroes fighting against evil, and that we keep assigning new villains to sustain this fiction. When our government starts fighting fantasy wars instead of actually using the military to be prepared to defend the country, we are in trouble.

I was disappointed in the weak suggestions at the end for a solution to the problem. I am sympathetic to the peace movement, but I think there are times to be fighters, based on clear-headed reality-based decisions.

The most important point is that the U.S. verges on becoming the villain when it bullies the rest of the world to try to enforce its dominance. I hope this book contributes to a movement away from Pax Americana imperialism.
