Product Description

Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don t Learn examines the question, What happens when, despite our best efforts in the classroom, a student does not learn? . A professional learning community creates a school-wide system of interventions that provides all students with additional time and support when they experience difficulty in their learning. The authors describe the systems of interventions, including Adlai E. Stevenson High School s Pyramid of Interventions, created by a high school, a middle school, and two elementary schools. The authors also discuss the logistical barriers these schools faced and their strategies for overcoming them.

1 out of 5 stars "Blame the Teachers!" says this book.......2007-09-15

The book has some good points (maybe one and a half stars), but it was difficult to read it due to my eyes rolling at every other sentence.

To James O'Keefe: Right on! I totally agree 100%. You need to write a book! (It might be difficult to get it published though, considering the PLCC has probably got a stronghold on all educational publishing.) Teamwork is great and definitely has its place. But this book is talking about much more than teamwork. It's talking about placing 100% of the blame on teachers and principals. What about the parents? What about the student who won't even try to learn?

Regarding what another reviewer wrote: Well, two comments: First of all, it's funny you mentioned Koolade in your review. Speaking of Koolade: Don't drink it! Too many people already have! (If you don't know what I'm talking about, I suggest you read up on the modern history of cults.) Secondly, speaking of water fountains, I have this to say: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink it.

One more thing about this book: The authors compare certain teachers (ones who believe in the "horse" metaphor above), to Pontius Pilate. You know, the guy who literally ordered Jesus to be crucified. All I can say is this: I'm a teacher at a low socio-economic school, I work 50-60 hours a week, I get along with my colleagues and students, and yet I do believe in the horse metaphor. The Pontius Pilate metaphor is just a bunch of, well, to put it in educated words, insulting, ridiculous, abusive slander to the teachers and principals who work so hard every single day.

1 out of 5 stars Should have been an essay........2007-08-06

Basic ideas are sound, but I think nothing ground-breaking. I felt that each chapter could have been shortened into a paragraph or two. At most, this should have been an essay. Based on the way the book was written, I got the feeling that the authors were trying to influence the reader much the same way as a cult would try to brainwash a prospective member. While I agree that teachers should teach children to learn, I feel that the student will be in trouble upon graduation as the system of support will be gone. They will have to perform or fail... period. I felt the book to be too wordy, too preachy, too liberal... did I say too wordy?

3 out of 5 stars Dragged Towards the End.......2007-05-30

I haven't finished this book yet. I found the beginning useful and read it on recommendation of a former principal. There is a lot of talk about secondary schools.

5 out of 5 stars Educational Professionals and Parents Take Heed!!.......2007-05-13

This is an outstanding, must read book for all professional educators (K-12). This book adroitly points out how public (and private) education needs to address and fix what is wrong with our educational system today. While we have moved into a new century education has not. This book is showing us the way to be successful and competitive in the world around us. It is a guide book that school boards, superintendents, principals, counselors, teachers, and parents need to embrace because it is about the LEARNING not about covering a subject that allows our students (our greatest treasure and asset) to fall through cracks of an antiquated system. As a professional educator of thirty-five years, I whole heartedly recommend that you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2007-05-13

There are some great ideas in this book to help at-risk, low-achieving students. I look forward to implementing some of them!

Book Description

Whatever It Takes is a wide-ranging and highly entertaining read, in which Congressman J. D. Hayworth exposes the ongoing battle where terrorists seek ways to exploit our porous borders and attack our homeland as well as the hypocrisy, greed, and political correctness that could literally destroy our nation.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2007-07-13

I have read Pat Buchanan's book on the subject and it lays out a better understanding of the immigration and terrorist threat
than this one. This seems to be "same old" and scare tactics.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and sobering book about the current illegal immigration crisis........2007-06-10

Congressman J.D. Hayworth of Arizona lays out his first hand experiances and views as a Southern Border State Congressman, on the failure of our countries elected and un-elected officials to enforce our laws. He disproves the "politically correct" talking points about illegal immigration. He details with well researched facts, the great expense illegals are actually costing the American tax-payer; disproving that they are a net asset to the American economy and revealing that they are taking roughly $3 out of the system for every $1 that they put in. After reading "What Ever It Takes", you will have an accurate sence of the urgency that the American people must become involved in stopping this very real crisis and threat to our Nation. Excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars probably the most informative book on immigration.......2007-03-29

This book gets right to the point every time. If you want the facts, want them straight and want them now, this is the book to read on the immigration crisis. "We are already at a disadvantage. [The pro-immigration forces] are organized and ready to go." (p. 193).

To those who depend only on mainstream news sources for information, the facts and figures in this book are shocking. If you're only going to read one book specifically on the immigration crisis, this is the book to read.

A lot of Americans wonder why the government doesn't do the sensible things. "The problem with depending on government is that you cannot depend on it." (p. 192). Every book on the immigration problem provides a list of remedies, and these remedies are much the same, and they are all reasonable. What these books do not do is to show why these sensible remedies are not being put into place already and why they will not be put into place. A lot is going on besides a million people a year sneaking across the border. You need to understand what that is and how it operates if you want to help save America. Read While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within.

4 out of 5 stars Remeber the Alamo.......2007-02-17

A well written book on a topic we should all pay attention to. Why does our gevernment allow illegals more rights then our citizens? Our we losing our culture? Will we fight for independce from Mexico, again, in Texas?

2 out of 5 stars Seal off and militarize the border and crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants!.......2006-10-21

That is the call to action by Congressman J.D. Hayworth, representing the 5th Congressional District of Arizona. In his book, Whatever it Takes, Congressman Hayworth sets to the task of explaining why it is so crucially important to finally get control of the Southern border with respect to the flow of illegal immigrants. Not only is the porousness of the border dangerous to the national security of the United States, but it is dangerous to the security of American workers. Focusing on the social problems which accompany unregulated, illegal immigration, the burdens placed on the education and medical systems, the criminal behavior of immigrants during their illegal entry and the threats caused by a fractious multiculturalism, Hayworth lays out his solution to the problem: immigration reform centered on strong enforcement policies. Not only would the author like to see a security wall built from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, but it must be monitored by a significant increase in Border Patrol agents using modern high-tech surveillance devices to stem the flow of human traffic. Moreover, he stresses that interior enforcement of businesses that hire illegal immigrants is the key to any successful immigration reform policy. It is not enough to try and stop the flow of illegal immigrants at the border alone. Through the penalization of businesses that hire illegal immigrants, the magnetic force which pulls illegal immigrants to cross the border in the first place would be reduced. Not only is it necessary to enforce the current immigration laws that the United States already has, but the author elucidates new laws which should be enacted allowing the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service the ability to communicate freely with the Department of Homeland Security to stem the illegal use of forged documents by illegal immigrants to obtain jobs and collect payroll checks.

Congressman Hayworth is unapologetic in his diatribe as he deems the atmosphere of political correctness and race baiting surrounding the illegal immigration debate as disingenuous. The overly sensitive manner in which illegal immigration is discussed is dangerous to our security, insomuch as it disallows serious discussion of the issues. In his dismissive attitude of political correctness, he affords himself the opportunity to also address even more controversial subjects such as ending birthright citizenship laws for children born to illegal immigrants, ending "sanctuary" laws that forbid local and state police from providing information to federal immigration officers, limiting the issue of Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers so that illegal immigrants cannot obtain home loans or other financial services, establishing English as the national language of the United States, ending all bilingual education and denying social services and in-state tuition to illegal immigrants and their children.

Clearly the immigration debate is something which Congressman Hayworth is distinctly familiar with. The 5th District of Arizona, while not directly on Mexico's border, is in the southern half of the state and experiences the migratory effects of illegal immigration directly. First elected in 1994, Congressman Hayworth is solidly a Republican, with a voting record showing his conservative credentials. However, his arguments opposing illegal immigration are nothing new and his book is, at often times, an inflammatory diatribe against the "liberal elite" and the "left-wing groups" who support "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. With the distinct polarization of supporters and opponents of various immigration reform policies, Hayworth's book fits in nicely with Pat Buchanan's "State of Emergency" and Tom Tancredo's "In Mortal Danger," all three of which share the hard-line, strict enforcement approach towards solving the illegal immigration issue.

Congressman Hayworth falls victim, in a significant way, to just what he disparages in his book; the absolutism of his ideology and brusque manner of communicating his ideas leads to a diminution of articulate debate. As such, the book is more of a duplicitous reactionary rant than it is a well thought-out and researched appeal to tighten the U.S.-Mexico border. Through his use of oversimplified sloganeering, most of his arguments are based on the fact that because an illegal immigrant has broken the law to enter the United States, it does not matter what the immigrant may do for work, or in what ways immigrants may contribute to American society; the fact that they broke the law is tantamount and needs to be punished. As much as I can appreciate his passionate appeal to "do something," Hayworth's approach to the problem, and more importantly, his disdain for liberalism in general, leads me to believe that a serious discussion of the relevant issues involved in the immigration debate would be lost in the rhetoric of his ideology.

Ever traded baseball cards or comicbooks? You?ve taken your first step in investing!

This book succeeds where many others fail: It does an excellent job of breaking into layman's terms the most complex investing and financial concepts, while at the same time making the whole thing completely relatable for someone who knows *nothing* about investing. That is a talent many wish they had. This is no mean feat when you consider all the jargon you have to learn. Now, imagine having fun while doing it! Wow! Eric Tyson, eat your heart out!

Sure, it?s been a while since this book first came out, so you know it needs a little updating...get over it! I still give the book five well-deserved stars. I appreciate the authors for writing such an awesome little book, as reading a book is a big investment of time, and reading this book was definitely worth it.

Share it with a teen or twenty-something you love, and give them the gift of setting them on the path to becoming investors.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for people in their teens and twenties!.......2000-07-27

Before I bought this book, I was probably like a lot of young people out there... ya get paid from work and you go blow it on the weekend with your friends at the mall. You just manage to get your bills paid off, and wonder why you can never seem to get a decent amount put away in your savings account? People, wake up! This is the time you should be saving for your future, or you'll regret that you didn't when you get older! I bought this book with determination not to spend every dollar I make and how to put my money towards my future. The book gives excellent explainations on the stock market and how it works, and even explains all those Wall Street symbols in a way that it's actually fun to read! It explains everything from savings accounts, to stocks and bonds, to IRAs! When I was finished reading the book, I was so glad I had read it when I did, because the later you wait, the more you're wasting time! I recommend this book to all! Read it and you'll be glad that you did!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of information........1999-07-04

This is an excellent book. It makes so easy to understand - all those complicated stock terms, author makes use of beautiful examples from time to time. It is a must have for every person who wants to invest money in stocks etc. (may be, except the ones, whose primary carrier is stocks or stock trading). I myself bought and sold stock over the last few years but never understood the terminology completely. It is nice to have it in my library - Thanks to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars A personal library must! Says a Cincinnati Investor........1999-03-30

There is absolutely no better tool in the market today. It's a great handbook for those sophisticated Generation X'ers, and an even a better tool for that worldly, younger new generation who are blazing trails right behind the X'ers.

Hey Boomers, your children, the N'Gens, are going to take the world by storm. With your ideas and their cohesive, cooperative energetic spirit, there isn't anything that they won't accomplish.... But without the financial skills so wonderfully illustrated in this book, your child will be left behind the pack. He or She will fail to live up to their unbelievable potential.

As an owner of this book, I can honestly attest to its value. I think it should be part of every high school senior's core curriculum! It is the only book that can make sure your child is ready to assist his/her peers in shaping the future of America and the World.

If your school board has not yet adopted this text, then please makes sure before your son or daughter goes off to college this fall that they have this guidebook to the world of life. America and for that matter the World will be grateful.

If you're a twenty- or thirty-something looking for an accessible, useful guide to investing, look no further. This is a great how-to guide to the markets, written in an inviting yet not condescending style. Buy it. Read it. Tell your friends.

As a tribute to his father and the values he wished to instill in his son, Whatever It Takes is a unique, sportscaster's-eye view of those athletes who exhibit the qualities we too would wish to instill in our sons and daughters. In today's world of superstars, celebrity athletes, and multimillion-dollar signing bonuses, Scott Murray refreshingly reminds us of the laudable legends of sports history whom our parents praised not only for their talent but also for their tact. His book proves that the tradition of the sports figure-role model has not been snuffed out and that there are many athletes who still do "whatever it takes" to be successful in competition, the community, and life.

    Book Description

The cry of the human soul has always been to be loved faithfully, deeply, and completely. In The God Who Loves, John MacArthur gives a passionate, well-argued defense for what the love of God is-and what it is not. He explores the persistent themes of God's love and goodness throughout the Old and New Testaments and tackles the difficult questions head-on with frank, thoroughly biblical answers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Again, brilliant work by MacArthur.......2004-07-22

I will let his text speak for itself. It needs no defense.

3 out of 5 stars If this is how God loves...........2003-12-08

then God is not omni benevolent. This book is nothing more than MacArthur's attempt to have his cake and eat it too. On the one hand he wants to uphold the traditional Reformed idea that God has an elected people that He loves with a special and unconditional love. Yet, on the other hand MacArthur wants to believe that God loves the non-elect as well. MacArthur argues for this by saying that God possesses two types of love: a general and non-saving love, which he gives to all, and a special and saving love He displays only towards the elect. In my opinion there seems to be a disturbing trend taking place in Reformed apologetics these days. Since they can't conform all of Scripture to their teachings, they invent new ideas and doctrines to attempt to compensate for those deficiencies and weaknesses. First, many have begun to argue for the concept that God has two wills, and that God's desire to save all men only pertains to God's first will, which is really not salvific at all. This has been in direct response to criticisms that have demonstrated that the usual Calvinist approach of saying all men means all types of men is not satisfactory and does not make sense of all the Scriptures.

Now MacArthur has added another element to the argument by saying that God has two types of love. Does anyone else see the pattern here? First God has two wills and now he commands two types of love as well. I can understand MacArthur's reasoning for writing this book since he desires to stem the tide of young and zealous Reformed initiates who argue that God does not love the reprobate, but in fact hates them. They argue for this from Scripture passages such as Romans 9:13, which they believe validates the idea that God hates the non-elect. Yet, instead of accepting the obvious MacArthur has chosen to develop his own unique and unhistorical idea. When the Scripture speaks of God's love for all mankind it always uses the Greek word agape and never gives any hint of a differentiation. In the gospel of Mark, Jesus loved the rich young ruler even though he didn't accept Christ's message. Are we honestly supposed to believe that the agape spoken of there is some ulterior form of love? I and many others do not believe that to be the case. Moreover, Jesus commands us to love our enemies and do well to those who hate and despise us. Is God calling us to do something that He Himself will not do? Again, I seriously doubt this is the case

Finally, I found many of MacArthur's arguments to be unconvincing. He says that he is willing to accept God's love for the non-elect as a love that is calling them to repentance, giving them sufficient grace, and showering them with earthly blessings, but his argument breaks down when one examines his beliefs. Since MarArthur holds to the traditional Reformed idea of Total Depravity, he believes men are corpses are sin, completely unresponsive, oblivious to the things of God, and unable to do a thing. Now, I wouldn't walk up to a corpse tell him I love him and plead with him to repent because that is just ludicrous. Therefore, I doubt the all-wise omnipotent ruler of the universe would do the same to men that are dead in sin since He is infinitely smarter than humans and knows this will accomplish nothing. MacArthur's view of total depravity completely undercuts his arguments for God's love. If you are really serious about studying and understanding God's love for all of us, then read the Bible and only pick up this book after previous study.

In Whatever it Takes, brothers Butch and Zig Steel have revenge in their hearts and are not afraid to get blood on their hands as they plot out their vicious scheme. A scheme that will not only avenge the grudge they've been carrying around for 25 years but will also make them millionaires. With all the chips falling into place for the Steel brothers an unexpected twist in the form of 9 year old Penny Baker threatens to be a monkey wrench in their carefully laid plans.

But even in the protective custody of NYPD's finest detectives young Penny is still in danger, because the Steel brothers will stop at nothing to enact their revenge. Author Dwayne Murray Sr.'s novel reads better than a movie script and once the chase begins readers won't be able to put the book down until it reaches it's thrilling conclusion. If edge of your seat drama is what you're looking for than please believe that Whatever it Takes is just the book for you!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Thriller .......2007-09-26

Mr. Murray has done it again. A fast paced, raw, high energy thriller that will have you up all night turning pages. Get it as soon as you can, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Determination Can be a Powerful Tool.......2007-09-23

Whatever It Takes is the second Urban Thriller that I had the pleasure of experiencing from the author, Dwayne Murray Sr. It is a story about two brothers Butch and Zig Steel's experiences after loosing the two people that meant the most to them, their father and mother. Read this book and find out why Melvin Baker is one of the most interesting and core characters of this book. Melvin is a husband, father and successful businessman who plays such a strong role, in the determination of these brothers and how their future evolves after the tragic death of their parents.

You will also witness the bond of two female detectives, Jesse and Brenda...and how they work together on an intense case involving the Steel brothers, while protecting an adorable little girl by the name of Penny. These two women come together from such different backgrounds, to create and invisible law enforcement team.

What will you experience in the book? Dwayne Murray, Sr. takes you a roller coaster ride with this story and its characters. You will feel the love of family, deception and lack of trust, determination to complete that ultimate goal, while witnessing the calculating minds of several characters which does lead to the death of many.

I would highly recommend this to all that love an action packed Urban Thriller. The interesting twist to this book is the author presents you with two different endings and would like to hear from the readers which ending is preferred. So, Mr. Dwayne Murray Sr., I loved the original ending.

    4 out of 5 stars Action Pacted!!!!!.......2007-09-19

Are you looking for a book that has you turning the pages trying to figure out what is gonna happen next? With all the suspense like a good thriller movie? Well this is the book for you. Read this book you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Not On My Watch.......2007-09-16

I have pretty much limited my use of reading the back of a novel because sometimes too much of the plot is given away, especially when you are reading a "suspense" type of deal. I want to be surprised just like I was actually one of the characters. "Whatever It Takes" was no exception to the rule and I am glad I followed my first thought.

You are immediately introduced into the lives of the Steele Brothers, Butch and Zig. They are hard working kids with hard working and loving parents. Everything is pretty typical of a blue-collar lifestyle until a malicious act rules out the brothers' meal ticket to happiness. Vowing to jump over the nonstop hurdles, Butch and Zig will stop at nothing to collect on their personal vendetta.

Melvin Baker has lived his life as selfish as possible. Being an only child has always had its perks and now his life couldn't be better with all of the millions he has made from his video games. Equipped with all the things that money could buy, his wife and children want for nothing, not even his little adopted daughter, Penny. Life has been grand and Melvin Baker will see to it that it gets even better.

The Steele Brothers have finally come to the day where they will make the people who hurt them pay. With a laundry list of paybacks they are ready to get the show on the road and whoever tries to stand in their way will ultimately meet their fate.

I was engrossed from beginning to end. There were grammar and spelling setbacks throughout, but you pretty much felt like you were reading a book that would be made into a movie someday (i.e. if Replacement Killers or Bad Boys were made into a book). Some parts were kind of unbelievable like a movie with the sharp shooting and still fighting with someone through unbearable pain. Dwayne will give you an alternative of concepts, but I choose to stick with what he did instead of changing it. Just in case Dwayne wanted to know, I would like a "to be continued?"

      Book Description

Now approaching its 30th year of syndication, Doonesbury continues to entertain, inspire, and provoke with its unique blend of social commentary, humor, and political satire. Chronicling the millennial state of the nation through the interconnected lives of its large cast of characters, the strip offers unusual perspectives on the usual suspects, and asks impertinent questions on the pertinent subjects of the day. In this all-new collection Trudeau's Pulitzer Prize-winning strip tracks the end of an Internet start-up and the beginning of a gay marriage, the revival an aging rocker's career-and the complete reinvention of the irrepressible Uncle Duke. In a presidential primary campaign attracting the likes of Warren Beatty and Donald Trump, perhaps it was not surprising that the former ambassador to China decided to throw his bandana into the ring. This book preserves for future historians the origins of Duke's remarkable candidacy (which can be tracked at www.Duke2000.com). Doonesbury appears in more than 1400 Sunday and daily papers and on the Doonesbury Town Hall Web site at www.doonesbury.com.

5 out of 5 stars "It should've been me, it should've been me!".......2006-04-07

This Doonesbury book takes us back a bit.It starts around May of 1999 and ends with the strip of May 13,2000.What a year it was. Events were a little unfocused ,then we see Thudpucker reviving his career with Net Aid, the gay marriage of Mark and Chase,Mike enters the business world of a Dot Com company,Zip goes to college ; but things all get focused when Duke decides to enter politics with his own Reform party ,with a platform of
Compassionate Fascism;and starts a campaign to run for President.
It's hard to believe that this was 6 years ago. Can you believe it;Dubya with the help of Scull and Crossbones beat out the Duke despite the backing of Mr. Butts and the tobacco industry . With all the other wannabees really never in contention. If there was anything that might have produced a different outcome; all I can think is that Duke erred when he passed up Honey for his "Arm Candy".
What I really enjoy about these books is reading them several years after the stripts; boy, don't they bring back the memories.
I have only one complaint, though, the use of black and white just doesn't do the artwork justice.
This book really emphazises how unpredictible even 6 years can be. Who could ever have imagined 9/11,The War on Terror,Dubya getting re-elected over Kerry ,who wasn't even on the radar screen. Then the demise of the great HST ,his blast off into space .And now ,the biggest issue of all;how to deal with 12 million illegal immigrants. Heck,6 years ago, that issue couldn't even get a dozen lines in some border weekly newspaper.
The pundits are all talking about Condi vs Hillary;n but it could very well be someone like Al Sharpton vs some Mex.American from
Cain's great State of Arizona and with the right running mate, wake up ,Ms.Huan is still available. And this time no Campaign Headquarters in Coon Rapids MN; put it anywhere on the border with Mexico.Keep it moving and if its on a river bed, just keep an eye out for flash floods.
Hey,if you think this is crazy, take a stab at it. I got a feeling "You ain't seen nothing yet."...Keep tuned!

5 out of 5 stars Hunter S. Thompson for President.......2003-11-05

Err... I mean Uncle Duke for President. This time -- why not the worst? Compassionate fascism!?!? Isn't that, more or less, what we got in the last election? It almost seems like Uncle Duke was elected -- a former drug abusing wack job.

      What a country.

This book is the best of the post-1980 Doonesbury books. It is good to see that Trudeau hasn't grown tired of his HST knockoff. He is a true American Orginal... and the Trudeau take on Raoul Duke is classic.

4 out of 5 stars The Doonesbury saga continues.......2001-08-16

Trudeau draws his (real-life) politicians as invisible men. Except for a whaffle (Clinton) or a cowboy hat (George W.). Now in case of Duke (who is fiction) one can see his political message speaking from the man's brain: Mini-D brings us a message of compassionate fascism. Does this mean that we can see fiction clearer that the real people in political life?

The campaign 2000 was so much of a (life) cartoon itself that any (drawn) cartoon can only pale beside it. Anyway, this newest book in the "Doonesbury"-saga is only part one of things to come in Duke's presidental quest. The strip has become very bitter compared to its heydays in the70s and 80s. But still - it's the best!

5 out of 5 stars Duke is at it again!.......2001-01-18

This book is excellent for anyone who loves Zonker's uncle Duke. The former ambassador runs for president in this hillarious book. Its worth the money.
