Practical Advice Backed by Research.......2006-11-21
As a marriage and family therapist, I rely most heavily on the work of John Gottman, because he is one of the only authors/relationship experts who uses scientific research to identify the components of successful and unsuccessful relationships.
Ten Lessons To Transform Your Marriage is an engaging format to present his "Love Lab" research findings and related relationship advice. The ten "lessons" were presented through ten different couples, and it was easy to become engrossed in the story of each couple as they talked through their relationship issues. Embedded within each couple's conversation are clues about how they interact and connect, and the dynamics underlying their conflict. By following these conversations and the authors interventions, readers will learn how to uncover the deeper issues underlying ongoing conflicts, as well as how to use productive communication tools to transform relationship issues into relationship improvement and positive change.
What I like most about this book is its message that relationships can be healed and changed even in the face of significant pain, hurt and disappointment. John Gottman's work illustrates that relationship success is not just about a couple's compatibility or about never hurting each other, but instead about open, effective communication. This is a great "reality check" for all couples. This book will ideally give a lot of couples hope about how to transform their relationship problems into fulfillment and satisfaction through the right kind of communication.

When it comes to books on marriage and relationships, I rely on the Gottman books, where the concepts were gleaned from scientific observation and statistical analysis, rather than pop psychology and opinion. For several years, I have been giving "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work" (SP) as wedding gifts, and now I include "10 Lessons to Transform Your Marriage" (10L) as well.
Although SP and 10L cover much of the same material, SP explains the concepts in more depth with exercises to apply the material, whereas 10L explains the concepts in a concise yet functional manner, and is heavier on application. I find both books equally valuable and highly recommend one read both--SP first, then 10L, although 10L is perfectly usable as a stand-alone book.
In 10L, we're introduced to 10 couples, each with a different issue. One couple, for example, has a marriage that's so child-centered they're not taking adequate time for themselves. Another couple lives a parallel existence in the house as roommates who don't get along very well. The Gottmans devote a chapter to each couple's problem. In each chapter, there's an explanation of the problem along with a transcript of the couple having a conversation (in some cases an argument!) about their issue. To the right of the dialog, the Gottmans comment on what they notice, with plus or minus signs, a very helpful feature that helps the reader integrate the principles into a real-life situation. After the initial dialog, the Gottmans comment on what the husband and wife did that was helpful or detrimental, and how they can improve. The couple was then sent back to have a second conversation, and in each case the couple made improvements on how they dealt with the issue. Each chapter finishes with more comments from the Gottmans, along with an update on the couple (usually one year later), and an exercise for reader to do with her or his partner.
As I read the dialogs, I covered up the Gottmans' comments and thought my own, then checked to see what the Gottmans thought. Soon I was analyzing the dialog like a pro, which helped me see how to apply the concepts to real life at a deeper level than I gained from just reading SP and John Gottman's earlier book, "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail." One thing I like is that the Gottmans get at the deeper meaning behind some seemingly mundane conflicts. One couple was discussing the time constraints of childcare and volunteer work, but the deeper issue was that they failed to recognize each others' dreams.
Unlike the Gottmans, I thought several of the couples were too incompatible to be married. One husband lost their retirement money in a bad deal, had an affair, and routinely minimized his wife's feelings in conversation. I thought this man is too self-centered and immature to be married. However, the Gottmans worked with this couple who reported a year later that on a scale from 1 to 10, they've improved from a 4 or 5 to a 9. Granted the Gottmans didn't use cases where they couple had separated or divorced by the follow-up period.
I think many couples are too incompatible to be married in the first place. However, if both parties take the time to diligently learn and apply the Gottman communication and relationship skills, they'll at the very least be less miserable than they were to begin with. I think the Gottman material is so valuable, you could randomly select any two adults from the phone book, and as long as neither is a sociopath, both could apply the Gottman principles and live together civilly for a year or more!

As a beginning mediator, I found this book very detailed and theoretical. I am sure that I will return to it again and again as I gain experience. I found "Basic Skills for the New Mediator (2d edition)" by Allan H. Goodman to provide a quicker and more practical overview. When used together, I believe both books are a good basis for the practicing mediator.

"The Strategy of Conflict" changed the development of game theory in several ways, but none was more important than Schelling's focus on real life examples, situations or games that are relevant to what we encounter in our daily lives. Before Schelling, game theory analysis was abstract and mathematical; it focused on zero-sum games, where interests were purely conflicting and there were no incentives to cooperate. Game theorists built convincing abstract models for these types of games, but its application was limited, since most interactions were a mixture of conflict and mutual dependence. In other words, analysis focused on pure conflict, a limiting cases of real world interactions, while in "The Strategy of Conflict" Schelling attempts to generalize game theory analysis to richer games that are `played' in the real world. His generalization introduced the concepts, commitments, threats, promises, communication systems, focal points, and randomization of strategies into game theory (chapters 1~8), which was then used to analyze the its applications in national security (chapters 9 and 10).
If you are studying game theory, this book is a must read. If you are just interested in game theory, I'd recommend reading this book too.

NOBLE PRIZE WINNER ON CONFLICT.......2005-10-11
The 2005 Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded to Robert Aumann and Thomas C. Schelling. Schelling is professor of Economics at the University of Maryland and applied game theory to conflict. His focus was on the weapons issues but his ideas have been applied to a host of business issues.
In this review, we will apply some of Shelling's concepts to how companies fire employees.
Schelling says "uncertain retaliation is more efficient than certain retaliation" when bargaining and "the capability to retaliate is more useful than the ability to defend." Now let's get practical.
GOODBYE SCENARIO
As a verb, "goodbye" is the act of parting. It is also an acknowledgement of parting. A goodbye scenario assumes that once employees physically leave the building, they will never be a factor for the company's future. The relationship was transactional and the transaction is now over.
If the firm defines the termination as a goodbye scenario, the firm should be guided by a business model that says, "What's the least expensive way of terminating this relationship?" And Board members should ask tough questions about paying too much.
AUWIEDERSEHEN SCENARIO
"Auwiedersehen" is German for "Until we meet again." It has a more open-ended quality than the English "goodbye." In an auwiedersehen scenario, the assumption is that once employees physically leave the building, they may continue to be a factor in the firm's future. But it is unclear what that factor may be.
After their non-compete contracts are over, they may join a smaller competitor and become potential allies or opponents in your firm's efforts to develop strategic alliances or acquire the firm.
They may join firms that touch your industry and become potential referral sources of new business for you or a potential source of caution to others about using your company.
They may attend alumni programs at their schools and encourage/discourage graduates from joining your firm.
Each of these scenarios assumes capability of retaliation plus uncertainty of retaliation.
The best practical defense in terminating employees under these conditions is "Treat people with dignity on the way out because the assured costs of such positive treatment are less than the potential downside retaliatory risks.
AUWIEDERSEHEN VS IT'S NICE TO BE NICE
We work with companies that treat departing leaders with dignity
on the grounds that "it is good public relations and good for morale if we help former employees achieve a `soft landing.'" This positive rationale works only in cultures supportive of such a rationale.
The Schelling rationale does not depend on an organizion having a specific culture for treating people with dignity.
It develops a contingency approach to management based on a risk assessment.
There may be times when a "goodbye" scenario does indeed make good sense. There are other times when "auwiedersehen" makes better economic sense.
In applying Professor Schelling's theories, management's failure to take defensive measures with those possessing abilities and options to retaliate is is just bad economics. One sees it at work every day.

Major contribution and still relevant after decades.......2003-11-09
Since its first publication in 1960, the strategy of Conflict is still relevant today. His concepts of strategic moves and random strategy can still be applied to the increasing complicated international affairs. It's definitely a timeless classic for game theoretical study of international relations.

I disagree with the review that describes Schelling's primary contribution here as the idea of focal points. This is one of the key insights in the book, but only one. He also has a fascinating discussion of threats, promises, and credibility and the relation of these issues to national security issues. The connection is explored further in Schelling's Arms and Influence, while this book is more theoretical in its orientation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who knows a little game theory but is frustrated by the level of abstraction which pervades the theory.

If you are looking for quick fixes and simplistic solutions to conflict this book is not for you. The highly analytical approach illuminates the complexities of conflict management. Folger et al do an excellent job exploring the theoretical and psychological background necessary to evaluate the implicit and explicit causes and conditions involved in and effectively pursue solutions to disputes at mutiple levels. You wont find this book on the NY Times bestsellers list because it is a textbook. Graduate student and practiotioners can expect to draw upon it as an invaluable resource. Unlike most of those popular books this book doesn't just 'get you to yes', it actually has more weight and substance than most everything else out there. If you want a popular book on the topic of conflict that most non-professionals will find approachable read "Difficult Conversations." You will find it enjoyable and highly accessible.

In this eloquent and impassioned book, defense expert Fred Iklé predicts a revolution in national security that few strategists have grasped; fewer still are mindful of its historic roots. We are preoccupied with suicide bombers, jihadist terrorists, and rogue nations producing nuclear weapons, but these menaces are merely distant thunder that foretells the gathering storm.
It is the dark side of technological progress that explains this emerging crisis. Globalization guarantees the spread of new technologies, whether beneficial or destructive, and this proliferation reaches beyond North Korea, Iran, and other rogue states. Not as objective as I had hoped.......2007-05-13
This book was interesting in the beginning but got harder to read towards the end. It starts out as fairly objective but then launches into right wing talking points. It appears as though the author just got lazy and decided to finish the book rather than sum up the logical argument. I wouldn't suggest it unless you are of that ilk. It will reaffirm what you already believe.
A Neocon problem.......2007-03-26
The problem with Ikle is that he is a long time Neocon, one of those who pushed the administration into the Iraq war. What he and most Neocons don't want Americans to realize is that the "terrorist" threat is the consequence of US (and UK) neo-colonialism in the Muslim world. The US and the UK have a long history of using military and other means to interfere in the affairs of the Muslim Middle East, exercising a blatant colonialism based on regime overthrow as well as military invasion. "Terrorism" has been the Muslim reaction to this aggression. The best way to avoid "annihilation" by terror would be for the US and the UK, and their surrogates, to get out of the Middle East and leave the Muslim nations there alone. If we left them alone they would leave us alone and have no reason to attack us. But Ikle would prefer that we not understand this.

The scenarios painted by Iklé are disturbing; they bear all too similar a resemblance to those from Vernor Vinge's science fiction novel, "Rainbows End", with the exception that current governments are not at all prepared to cope with a world in which small fringe groups can obtain WMD. It was even more of a surprise to realize that the scenario behind the graphic novel and movie "V" is precisely that described by Iklé: covert internal use of WMD by political extremists so that they can can power in the ensuing chaos. But Iklé's analysis is harder to discount than movies, comic books, or novels.
An unexpected gem from the "Annihilation" is Iklé's portrayer of Ronald Reagan, who had the reputation as a war monger, as someone who abhored the risks inherent in a policy of Mutual Assured Destruction.
My biggest complaint is that, despite its short length, the book is very repetitive.
Five Proposals to Avert a Super 9/11.......2006-12-02
This 100 page book is not a defeatist story of gloom and doom. Despite its unflinching analysis of ominous threats to the survival of our nation and our civilization, it offers an innovative list of five measures that the United States could to take to avert "annihilation from within" - a nuclear detonation or other super 9/11 designed by a new Lenin or Hitler aimed at seizing power in the US, or any nation. First, Iklé reveals that after a decade of efforts by Los Alamos, Livermore and the Pentagon's Science Board, mid-level officials have blocked the massive research scientists agree is needed to build nuclear weapons detectors. One idea from Lowell Wood is a gamma-ray color camera, but the needed R&D has not been funded due to complacency. Iklé reveals the FBI and Homeland Security have already done "thousands" of "false alarm" searches - yet Congress has not funded the new technology to detect stolen nuclear materials.
Second, Iklé shocks us when he describes how the US Congress has failed to pass legislation to determine in advance how Congress would be restored after a "super 9/11."
Third, the Congress has not yet clarified what emergency powers any future President would have [or be denied] after a "super 9/11."
Fourth, Iklé exposes an obscure UN protocol on asylum from 1967 that could require the US to accept asylum seekers, even if they have committed super terrorist acts - Taliban soldiers were admitted to the UK and Holland after 9/11 under this UN protocol.
Fifth, Iklé proposes that after a "super 9/11" incident, a coalition government like Churchill's welcoming Atlee in World War II [despite the error of Munich] and FDR-Truman worked with Republicans Vandenberg and Foster Dulles. Ikle implies a Woodrow Wilson- type of extreme partisan could not hold the nation together after a super 9/11. [Wilson famously scorned Senator Lodge and the Senate soon rejected the UN Charter of its day, which some historians claim began the path to World War II.]
Iklé is cautiously optimistic that Americans have the stamina and patriotism to prevail against an attempt to annihilate the US Government from within, but the chances will improve if his proposals are implemented. He says, "The United States would be the most difficult target for a any such nuclear power-grab, ... because of its inner political strength." And an important source of strength for Americans is their "common emotional bond with the past," based on the "extraordinary continuity of the American Constitution." An overarching historical account gives reasons to adopt Iklé's five proposals: his warning of our excessive optimism about technological progress that disregards the growing divergence between technology and the global political order. Iklé's concern about nuclear accidents at The Rand Corp. in the 1950s led to the safety controls (PALs) on nuclear weapons, so he knows as an insider how detailed proposals can be supported by broad, even sweeping reviews.
Ikle opens an entirely new vista with his succinct projection of two converging trends: advances in computer science and brain science. Unless this convergence can be stopped (and there is nothing in sight that would stop it) some nations will build decision centers that complement the strength of the latest computers with the unique capabilities of the human brain. China already initiated such a decision center for long term forecasting. If a truly effective brain-computer symbiosis can be achieved, Iklé warns, it may pose a fundamental challenge to all religions; indeed it could upend human civilization.
Ikle takes great pains to explain why this vista is not the same as the false claims of the Artificial Intelligence enthusiasts, who have predicted for fifty years that computers (without a living brain) will soon surpass the full panoply of human intelligence. Iklé's book, carefully read, will be an eye-opener for blinkered Artificial Intelligence experts.
Let's hope the new members of Congress will read this fascinating and short book.
Very Thought Provoking.......2006-11-30
This little book brings a lot of thought to the fore. There are basically three themes I'd like to mention:
Nuclear Terrorism - He sees this as a major threat. So do I. And for the first time the terrorists will have the opportunity to create real havoc. And if done say in Washington during a time when the President is addressing a joint session of congress it could effectively de-capitate the country. Or if done at a G8 summit. Or if it done so as to wipe out the present leadership of Saudi Arabia.
He sees the potential of a ruthless, perhaps messianic leader then stepping forward and taking over the country as Hitler did after the Reichstag fire. I don't see that happening here. We don't have a history of such actions in this country. On the other hand we do have a history of revolution and assassination. Fear of such a takeover was why the writers of the constitution put in the second ammendment. The Nazi's used gun registration records to remove guns from the people that didn't support them, i.e. the Jews.
But could someone, Osama bin Laden perhaps, use a nuclear device to wipe out the Saudi leadership and then take over Saudi Arabia. Possibly, and the removal of Saudi oil from the world market would be at risk. This would give us a big time depression, or an invasion of course.
Finally he sees the growth of super-human intelligence in computers as being a threat. I've been in the computer business for more than forty years. I don't see even a hint of this.
All in all, a very thought provoking book.

There are no tricks here, just proved techniques which being totally honest with yourself they will help you solve almost any personal, familiar or business problem. Long on small wars, short on airpower.......2006-01-19
This was well researched, but despite the title, it did not focus nearly enough on airpower. I also agree with Mr. Cappelli's assessment in his review. There is, however, some knowledge to be gained from the book, as the reader is able to examine some small wars side by side and see which aspects of airpower have consistently worked and which have not. The biggest drawback is the amount of material one has to wade through in order to find the bits where airpower is discussed.
To the authors' credit, the chapter summaries are good, and their conclusions covered in the final chapter are on the mark.
Half political history, half airpower history.......2004-04-29
I bought this book after reading some of the brilliant articles written by James Corum for the USAF official magazine. I rate this book with only two stars, because if one knows the history of various insurgencies of the past, can easily avoid reading half of the pages.
Corum and Johnson did not go deep in details, so the book remains just a general historical overview of the phenomenon of airpower against insurgents, even forgetting some minor wars (Sri Lanka against Tamils, Russia against Chechens, Morocco against Saharawis and so on).
Moreover, in the chapter dedicated to Colombia the two authors give an explicit negative political judgement on Clinton politics and overtly claim an American military intervention in the ongoing Colombian civil war: mixing politics with an academic work is not a good thing.
How low and slow do you have to fly?.......2004-03-04
The ideal aircraft in a counter insurgency war has to be able to fly low and slow enough to detect the insurgents and terrorists. But also have the ability to stay over the target long enough to direct firepower on them, if not fire upon them. While being able to carry the ordnance and have the speed to avoid being hit by ground fire. Does this require several types of aircraft, or is there one that can do it all?
Airpower in Small Wars presents over nine examples of small wars by giving the background of each particular conflict or the origins of each insurgency. The US Marine Corps is credited in the introduction and following chapter, with having greater interest and experience in employing aircraft against insurgencies. While the US Army Air Corps (later to become the USAF) focused on strategic use of airpower. The USMC still emphasizes aviation in its support of ground units with its close-air support doctrine. (Combined Arms Operations).
From the conflicts presented in the book, high performance jet aircraft are not particularly a benefit in the Counter Insurgency or Anti-Terrorist campaigns. And helicopters, though very useful are sussceptible to ground fire and Shoulder fired surface to air missles and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs).
The book also shows the interaction between the US and assisted countries with regard to supplying aircraft, supplies and training in relation to US foreign affairs policies.
Though recent US operations in Afghanistan and Iraq are not covered. The examples presented provide you a frame work to understand the current and past air operations in both countries. The peacekeeping mission in Somalia was not also featured but this is well documented in other books and a smilar analysis frame work can be applied.
It is the hope of the authors that this book may serve "to inspire other writers to take any one of the case studies as a starting point to more fully examine airpower in a specific conflict in much greater depth, then they will consider their book to be a very positive contribution to military and airpower history."
