Customer Reviews:
Drawn out and boring, hard to understand.......2007-05-13
I found Supervision of Police Personnel (6TH) to be pretty much drawn out and boring. It is painfully evident that the same information could have been relayed in a lot less then 400 boring pages. It was difficult to follow and often repetitive. A lot of detail was focused on irrelevant material. This was a difficult book for me to swallow (as a 12 year LEO), but it certainly rated high as a sleep aid for me.
Supervision of Police Personnel.......2007-03-10
It is a very good informational source for anyone that wants to pursue a promotion in police work. The review questions at the end of each chapter are convenient and helpful.
Don't pay for this book..........2006-11-29
Don't spend a dime...borrow it from a fellow Officer. I am a firm believer in capitalism, but these guys are really pushing the envelope. $99.00?! Nathan can keep the book!
Is the content any good? Yes, it is solid, however basic, leadership for Police Officers. But $99.00?! Go read something by Covey...it is a hell of a lot cheaper and far less boring.
Sleeping Material.......2006-11-10
This book is so dry and painful to look at. It's great to look at right before you go to bed to ensure a great nights sleep.
Some good info... but rambling and poorly written.......2006-10-23
This text is required reading for many taking police promotional exams. While there is some good information in it, it is rambling and poorly written. There are some indications that the book is not properly reviewed and edited before each new reprint. I hope the seventh edition is better and ties together the concepts clearly. There are several chapetes that are seperated but could easily dovetail into one. I found a 107 word run-on sentence (p.139), and it was by no means an exhaustive search -- there are many such examples. You can make it enjoyable to a degree by trying to find the number of times "catharsis" and "splendid" appear, but other than that, have your asprin bottle handy. I'd recommend a study guide such as Sgt. Walker recommends, or try to outline the thing yourself. Good luck.

Better Than I Thought........2005-10-20
The Information in this guide is well formatted and encourages the reader to study further the chapters in the text book. A more intelligent understanding of the chapters are gained from use of this study guide. This study guide is well worth the cost.
A Very Good Study Guide.......2002-07-11
This study guide was exactly what I was looking for. I found the questions in it very helpful. I recommend it to anyone in the law enforcement community.
No Good! Struggling in Trenton........2001-08-22
Be careful with this one. You're on your own as far as the answers go. I don't think it qualifies as a "study guide." I wasted my time and money. Shame on me, I picked the wrong study giude. Oops -- live and learn...

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written list of lists.......2007-03-20
I was forced to read this book as part of a promotional process..... The book is very disjointed and should be titled "Fifteen Essays on Police Supervision." The entire book reads like a book written entirely to test from in an academic arena. From an instructional stand point the book is fantastic to test from each chapter exposes the reader to concepts and a multitude of lists that the instructor may pull questions from. The problem being that each chapter extols the virtues of the listed concept and why it is the most important factor in supervision. Unfortunately, two chapters later there is a new "Responsibility" that is the most important to police supervision, and a new reordered list. The author even makes the error of defining terms with the term used as a definition for itself?
In short avoid this book unless it is required reading, or you intend to test from it on a chapter by chapter basis.... Even then there are far better titles to expose students to.
Horrible!!.......2005-09-11
This book is just plain bad. Writer has very hard time getting anything across clearly..way to wordy for the simple messages that he is trying to get across. Avoid if at all possible unless you like to sleep!! or if you have to read it for a test...even then not worth it!!
Long winded........2005-03-27
The only reason anyone would read this book is because it was listed as required reading for a promotional exam. Mr Whisenand is out of his mind and should limit his writing to something he has firsthand experience in. Read this book only if you are having insomnia.
Tiresome, windy, unrealistic, list happy.......2002-09-01
This guy is out of his mind. A very frustrating read which makes U.S Army technical manuals seem fascinating. Mr. Whisenand is an obvious scholar, but I fear his "book of lists" does not translate all that well to actual human beings. In addition, I found the section on "community oriented policing" especially overblown. He fails to consider the prosecutorial implications of stating that "long and detailed reports are turnoffs to many people" (page 331, paragraph 1), they're turnoffs to defense attornies too!
Again, an extremely intelligent man and dilligent social scientist, but this book is horrible.
Supervising Police Personnel.......2001-09-28
This book is entirly overwritten. It is very listy, for example, It tells you that there is 6 characteristics of a well written report. Then in the very next line he tells of the 6 different types of reports. Then he goes further to break down each type of report and explain what they are and why they are used. The ideas are notable. However the book's content is poorly written and is more for the overall manager not specific to police services. And yes, one needs to do the job before one can write about it.

Don't Read Unless You Have To!.......2005-09-25
Why the NJ DOP picked this book for testable material is beyond me? After was all said and done, 3 months worth of reading of this boring, choppy, unrealistic supervision theory book the DOP only asked 12 questions from it. Author lives in Fantasy Land when it comes to police work, especially in NJ. Come up with a few distinct "buzz words" and a littney of lists on police tactics, and you to can write a boring book like this one.
Boring.......2005-09-01
Why the Department of Personnel would have anyone read this for promotional testing is beyond me. Put together a few five dollar words and fragmented thoughts and you're an expert on supervision. This book was as interesting as watching paint dry. It should come with a noose so you could hang yourself after reading it!
Long winded........2005-03-27
The only reason anyone would read this book is because it was listed as required reading for a promotional exam. Mr Whisenand is out of his mind and should limit his writing to something he has firsthand experience in. Read this book only if you are having insomnia.
Doing what to whom?.......2005-01-21
This purchase was made out of necessity due to an upcoming promotional examination. I will preface my remarks by saying I have only read four chapters. I am dreading the next eleven chapters but I will keep an open mind. The author, Paul Whisenand, Ph.D., does not give any information in the dedication or preface to indicate what his qualifications are for writing about police supervision other than the fact that he is a member of the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University, Long Beach. By searching on the internet I found that he is a 'former police officer' and 'reserve deputy sherriff' but it does not say where. So far I see nothing to indicate that the content of this book has any relation to police supervision.
For anyone who has studied in the social sciences the writing style will be very familiar. The layout of the information is very poor and it is difficult to tell when he is moving from one subject to another. He makes a lot of use of indented text boxes with statements enclosed that don't seem to bear any importance on the subject matter. There are no references in the book at all which makes me very wary of the material. Is it all truly original thought from Whisenand? In chapter three he used 3 Mission statements from police departments with no reference as to where he found them, when they were issued and whether or not he got permission to use them. Most departments contract out their promotional testing processes and I guess this creates a market for over-priced books for the testing companies to draw their pool of questions from. The diabolical thing is that they seem to be in a money-making scheme with the authors and publishers by updating these books on a continuous basis. Let's face it, the only reason anyone would read this book is because they have to for a promotional test. With that in mind, this book is written very poorly in terms of picking out the material that is 'test question worthy'.

Outdated and of Little Use, (Comment from a concerned Sgt).......2001-04-06
This 1994 question book is of little value. The book that it is suppose to be modeled after, "Supervision of Police Personnel" has changed significantly since 1994. This study guide of the past consists of confusing questions with no explanations. It is not a study guide and certainly cannot replace the text book, unless you don't mind doing poorly on a promotional exam. Since the page numbers and the chapters have changed in the actual text book, I found this book to be very frustrating. Save your mental energy.
Supervision of Police Personnel, Study Guide.......2000-06-25
If "Supervision of Police Personnel" is on the reading list for your departments Sergeant exam, I would recommend buying this study guide in place of the book. The book is excessively dry and almost impossible to get through. Recently promoted Sergeants on my department said that the questions on their test were word for word from this study guide. They recommended buying it.

Hate assesment centers!.......2007-01-16
Entered into a promotional process not knowing anything about assessment centers at all...this book really helped me understand what they were about and what they may be looking for.
Of course, my actual assessment center was totally different than the book, but the same general principals applied.
I did get promoted, so at least for me it worked!
If you are concered about the assessment center this book will clear up the fog very well!
