The 2003 American invasion of Iraq was contentious, not just in the arena of global public opinion, but within the tight-lipped world of the George W. Bush White House. As Bob Woodward reveals in Plan of Attack, Vice-President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld were part of a group leading the charge to war while Secretary of State Colin Powell, General Tommy Franks, and others actively questioned the plan to invade a country that had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks while war in Afghanistan was still being waged. Woodward gained extensive access to dozens of key figures and enjoyed hours of direct contact with the President himself (more time, seemingly, than former Bush administration officials Richard Clarke and Paul O'Neill claim to have had). As a result, he's able to cite the kind of gossip you won't find in a White House press release: Franks calls Pentagon official Douglas Feith "the f*cking stupidest guy on the face of the earth," Powell shares his alarm over how the cautious Cheney of the first Bush administration had transformed into a zealot, and Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar seems to enjoy significantly more entrée and influence than most anyone would have thought. Bush is shown as a man intent on toppling Saddam Hussein in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and never really wavering in his decision despite offering hints that non-military solutions could be achieved. Light is also shed on CIA director George Tenet, who insists that the evidence that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction was "a slam dunk" only to later admit that his intelligence was flawed when months of post-war searches turned up nothing. But the book's most interesting character is Powell. A former soldier himself, who finds himself increasingly at odds with the agenda of the administration, Powell rejects evidence on WMDs that he sees as spurious but ultimately endorses the invasion effort, apparently out of duty. Upon its publication, the Bush administration roundly denied many of the accounts in the book that demonstrated conflict within their circles, poor judgment, or lousy planning, but the Bush/Cheney reelection campaign nonetheless listed Plan of Attack as recommended reading. And it is. It shows alarming problems in the way the war was conceived and planned, but it also demonstrates the tremendous conviction and dedication of the people who decided to carry it out. --John Moe
Book Description
The #1 National Bestseller
Plan of Attack delivers an astonishingly intimate portrait of President George W. Bush, his war council and allies as they launch a preemptive attack on Iraq, toppling Saddam Hussein and occupying the country. Woodward's fly-on-the-wall account reveals the secret meetings, key decisions, conflicts and raw emotions of war as they are rarely seen in contemporary history.
Download Description
"Plan of Attack is the definitive account of how and why President George W. Bush, his war council, and allies launched a preemptive attack to topple Saddam Hussein and occupy Iraq. Bob Woodward's latest landmark account of Washington decision making provides an original, authoritative narrative of behind-the-scenes maneuvering over two years, examining the causes and consequences of the most controversial war since Vietnam. Based on interviews with 75 key participants and more than three and a half hours of exclusive interviews with President Bush, Plan of Attack is part presidential history charting the decisions made during 16 critical months; part military history revealing precise details and the evolution of the Top Secret war planning under the restricted codeword Polo Step; and part a harrowing spy story as the CIA dispatches a covert paramilitary team into northern Iraq six months before the start of the war. This team recruited 87 Iraqi spies designated with the cryptonym DB/ROCKSTARS, one of whom turned over the personnel files of all 6,000 men in Saddam Hussein's personal security organization. What emerges are astonishingly intimate portraits: President Bush in war cabinet meetings in the White House Situation Room and the Oval Office, and in private conversation; Dick Cheney, the focused and driven vice president; Colin Powell, the conflicted and cautious secretary of state; Donald Rumsfeld, the controlling war technocrat; George Tenet, the activist CIA director; Tommy Franks, the profane and demanding general; Condoleezza Rice, the ever-present referee and national security adviser; Karl Rove, the hands-on political strategist; other key members of the White House staff and congressional leadership; and foreign leaders ranging from British Prime Minister Blair to Russian President Putin. Plan of Attack provides new details on the intelligence assessments of Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction and the planning for the war's aftermath."

Wrong Voice.......2007-07-12
Very well-written and informative book, but the person "reading" the book had a somewhat monotone voice. Really detracted from it. Worth reading -but not worth buying the book on tape.
Good Information.......2007-06-06
Bob Woodward's follow up to "Bush at War", "Plan of Attack" is a big improvement from the previous book. Woodward, a mainstay in political circles was privy to an amazing amount of information through interviews, memo's, manuscripts, presentations and transcripts. It is this access that allows the reader into the discussions, maneuvering, and planning of the pre-emptive strike against Iraq.
"Plan of Attack" opens two (2) months after 9/11 when Bush instructed Rumsfield to develop a new war plan for Iraq, and the book brings the reader along for the ride as the players move towards the inevitable. The book is reasonably balanced and provides enough ammunition for the "anti-Iraq war" and the "pro-Iraq war" segments. Both sides able to use this book to further promote their views becasue the key players knew how to use Woodward to promote their objectives.
It was interesting to see evidence that the Iraq war was pre-ordained when Cheney already had it as a priority before Bush's inauguration. However, it was also interesting to see that Bush was not Cheney's puppet as some would believe. Bush made some decisions early on in the strategizing that moved the country towards war even before the administration knew their decision: "Axis of Evil" speech, Iraq intelligence gathering that ignited mobilization of the Iraq people, and the Saudi Arabia agenda are some examples. Although some of Bush's early mistakes helped force our hand into war, he also clearly thought he was doing right thing with no hidden agendas. Regardless of the flawed intelligence, Bush believed he was making the world a more peaceful place through democracy in Iraq.
The personality and policy clashes (Tenet's manipulation, Powell's contradiction between opposing the war and selling it, Franks always the loyal soldier but disdain for Rumsfeld's team and their demands, Cheney opposing Powell's suggested approaches) was very interesting. Other gems within the book are: the full court press in selling this war to America and other nations, the CIA's intelligence effort, Saudi Arabia's influence and the ineffectiveness at the UN.
Very well done.
A deeply flawed book.......2007-04-02
The central problem with this book is that kind of like an official government history. Woodward has access to everyone but the price of it is that he has to stick to presenting what amounts to the official spin of all the main players involved.
Rumsfeld, Cheney and minions wanted the war to be played up as George Bush's idea. They were just the failful minions carrying out his plan. Colin Powell wanted to be portrayed as the tragic lone voice in the wilderness questioning the war. And absolutely everyone involved wanted the maximum possible blame for everything imaginable to be heaped on George Tenant. Tenant, being a Clinton apointee without a friend among these people was the natural place to dump the blame for everyting that went wrong. Woodward manages to masterfully put out all the conflicting ideas that his sponsors wanted without taking sides or offending anyone who mattered for the next book.
With a few years of hindsight and journalistic scandals, the flaws of the book appear even worse than they once did. The selective quotes given to Woodward in service of Cheney/Rumsfeld in making the war "Bush's fault" and blaming George Tenant for all the intelligence/WMD problems are all the move obvious now.
Tommy Franks gets off way too light in the book. He was the one person who could have stood up to Rumsfeld but he didn't. He allowed himself to be intimidated and then he ran off into retirement and book-writing as soon as he could declare mission accomplished in Iraq.
Ultimately for all the access, all the interviews and all the source material there is incredibly little real insight into how the decisions to go to war were made. All we get is person after person spinning the story to push their own agenda with the author providing no filter of any sort.
As an alternative, I would recommend Cobra II by Gordon and Trainor. Its not as easy a read as Woodward's book, but it has far, far more details about the planning and execution of the war without political spin and white house gossip.
the inside scoop.......2007-02-24
Mr Woodward presents the reader with the details that lead up to the BUSH jr war on Iraq. His access to the insiders shows us what can be done with thorough interviewing and skilled journalistic technique. This book reveals some of the flasw in the decision making and should hopefully show the reader how our leaders can fool eachotehr to 'coming on board'.
Great Book.......2007-02-07
The product arrived as described and provides an insight into what Bush really intends to do.
Book Description
As incredible as it may be to believe, three years before the Sept. 11 bombing of the World Trade Center a Chinese military manual titled Unrestricted Warfare touted such an attack - suggesting it would be difficult for the U.S. military to cope with.
Here is an excerpt from Unrestricted Warfare:
"Whether it be the intrusions of hackers, a major explosion at the World Trade Center, or a bombing attack by bin Laden, all of these greatly exceed the frequency bandwidths understood by the American military..."
Surprisingly, Osama bin Laden is mentioned frequently in this book.
Now NewsMax.com is making the CIA translation of this shocking book available to all Americans.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Americans and the world witnessed one of the most horrific acts ever to take place on American soil.
Our media and government were quick to declare the acts of that day as simply terrorism by a nationless group known as al-Qaeda.
In reading China's military manual Unrestricted Warfare, you will learn that the events of Sept. 11 were not a random act perpetrated by independent agents.
Instead, Chinese military planners believe that terrorism is just one of the many tools at the hands of nations and their terrorist allies to wage total war against the United States.
You will be surprised to learn:
· The two PLA colonels who authored Unrestricted Warfare have been hailed as heroes in China since Sept. 11
· The Chinese state-run propaganda machine is cashing in on the terror attacks ... producing books, films and video games glorifying the strikes as a humbling blow against an arrogant nation.
· Chinese Communist Party officials are saying that President Jiang Zemin has obsessively and gleefully watched and re-watched pictures of the aircraft crashing into the World Trade Center.
· The CIA's own translation agency reported that this book identifies the U.S. as China's main enemy, and details how a weak nation can destroy America using unorthodox attacks - like the 9-11 attacks.
· China is preparing itself and encouraging others to engage the U.S. in total war. The book is chock full of plans and strategies, from using computers, to smuggling illegal immigrants, to manipulating the stock markets, to influencing the U.S. media, to using weapons of mass destruction - all to destroy America.
Recent press reports indicate that China has assisted and continues to assist militarily and economically the Taliban and al-Qaeda - even after Sept. 11.
The doctrine of total war outlined in Unrestricted Warfare clearly demonstrates that the People's Republic of China is preparing to confront the United States and our allies by conducting "asymmetrical" or multidimensional attacks on almost every aspect of our social, economic and political life.
The media and Congress are keeping a lid on this book because of the implications of U.S.-China economic and trade relations.
But now you can bypass them by getting a copy yourself!

the book is worth reading, but it looks like a pirated book.
reason:
1. the author would never endorse such subtitle, which distorted the theme of the book totally (as other reviewers also discussed)
2. i can't find the publisher and other info in this page

Unrestricted Warfare.......2005-09-04
Scary reading. This book should be mandatory reading for all. I learned of this book while spending time in Taiwan and have seen China's plan in action.
Inside the "enemy's" mode of thinking.......2005-08-16
The book is a translation of the very interesting work published in February 1999 by two PLA colonels, namely qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui and the first thing that strikes the reader is the clear mind and the scope of reading that these officers have as a background. Following Martin van Creveld's groundbreaking work "The Transformation of War" (1991), the authors consider the 1991 Gulf War as a crucial turning point in the history of warfare and declare that war between states will be the exception rather than the norm in the future. The target of the book was obviously to warn China (and PLA particularly) that it's not prudent to prepare for a conventional fight against the US military might (regarding the Taiwan issue for example) but to seek new methods by whom "the inferior can defeat the superior". The book's subtitle "China's Master Plan to Destroy America" is not absolutely justified and the reader will not find any clue that China has any connection with the islamic extremism (although the insurgency in Iraq suits her nicely). There are indeed some points inside the book which are really chilling, such as "whether it be intrusions of hackers, a major explosion at the World Trade Center, or a bombing attack by bin Laden, all of these greatly exceed the frequency bandwidth understood by the American military... This is because they have never taken into consideration and have even refused to consider means that are contrary to tradition and to select measures of operation other than military means". The great part of the book is its emphasis on future "non-military warfare" and the warning that "soldiers do not have the monopoly of war". It is unknown whether PLA's top leadership hes endorsed these views or not but there is a troublesome condemnation of the race for superior weapons technology without paying attention to the changing principles of war. The emphasis on non-state opponents like Osam bin Laden is really amazing given that 9/11 wass more thatn two years ahead when the book came out, but currently PLA does not invest only on hackers or financial warfare (althoug this last is a strong dimension of its foreign policy) bying instead modern Su-30s, "Sovremeny" destroyers and "Kilo" submarines for use in a possible war with Taiwan and its allies.
The new kind of warfare which some people call "Fourth Generation War" or "Asymmetric War" has yet to prove its validity and despite some deaths that terrorists caused in the USA, Spain, Britain, Egypt (and more than 25.000 in Iraq) they have not achieved anything of lasting importance, thus their innovative tactics have been proved (for the time being) far less dangerous than classic conventional warfare of World War II type. I found very interesting the authors' suggestion of new principles of war (Omnidirectionality, Synchrony, Limited Objectives, Unlimited Measures, Asymmetry, Minimal Consumption, Multidimension Coordination and Adjustment and Control of the entrie process) but I don't know why they forgot to mention the old but crucial principles of "surprise", "security" and "unity of command". Overall it is an important study which seeks to find new ways to confront or negate the US military superiority but the theory has not proved decisive so far. Probably, the crucial turning point for the ascendancy of this theory will be the use of WMD at the hands of terrorist groups ot other non-state elements. As for PLA, it is rather impossible to conquer Taiwan without firing a shot. On the negative side of the book is the problematic translation of names, hence "Aegis cruisers" become "Zeus shield cruisers" and MacGregor's book "Brealing the Phalanx" becomes Maigeleige's book "Break the Factional Position". Many other names have been changed almost beyond recognition!
For the reader who does not wish to receive such a heavy dose of theory though, I would strongly recommend Peter Howarth's excellent new book "China's Rising Sea Power" instead, which is full of data and a fine operational and strategic analysis of the Chinese goals and means in Western Pacific. It is rather expensive but it worths its money!
An Irresponsible Mis-representation.......2005-07-18
The subtitle of the translated work, "China's Master Plan to Destroy America" is added by the translator. If this book were indeed China's master plan to destroy America, would the Chinese military authority be so stupid to publicize its master plan?
The Chinese edition, published in 1999, is not at all anti-America. The United States is indeed a major focus of the book simply because the United States is militarily the most powerful and advanced nation in the world, and it is the only nation that has fought in several major wars, particularly the Gulf War, with significant innovations in weaponry, military strategies and tactics. In fact the authors express their admirations and respects for the many innovations and accomplshments of the Amercian military in the Gulf War, and for the "father" Bush's wisdom of forming an international alliance to fight Saddam Hussein.
As any analysis would do, the book does post questions on some U.S. post Gulf War military thinking. For instance, the authors are puzzled by th fact that the U.S. military still gave so much attention to tanks while in the Gulf War helicopters were proved to be the deadly weapon of destroying the tanks....
On fighting the terrorist war and the future conventional warfare, the two authors are very much indebted to the ideas developed in Alvin Toffler's book, THE THIRD WAVE, and, particularly , in Alvin and Heidi Toffler's WAR AND ANTI-WAR. To illustrate the feasibility of their views, Qiao Liang, the first author of the book, published a novel MORI ZHI MEN or GATE OF ARMAGEDDON in 1995. In the novel, helicopters defeat tanks, and a war between two major powers ends without casualty (a prediction made in Toffler's WAR AND ANTI-WAR).... In the novel, The U.S. is a decisive player in the very delicate and complex international politics, but the novel's hero a Chinese colonel helps defeating the terrorists who attempt to destroy the world not by means of suicide bombers but by using computers (another Toffler's prediction). In CHAOXIANZHAN (UNRESTRICTED WARFARE), the authors are surprised to see that the West and the U.S. are so ill-prepared to defend themselves against terrorists.
As the orginal Chinese UNRESTRICTED WARFARE or CHAOXIANZHAN was published in 1999, the cover of the translated English version shows the imgage of the horrifying destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001. This is a very unfortunate mis-representation either for some political purpose or for monetary gains.
By the way, the two authors of the UNRESTRICTED WARFARE were not educated and trained as professional military men. Colonel Qiao Liang, for instance, received his B.A. degree in Chinese literature, and has published several notable novels. He is employed in the Creative Writing Departament of the Air Force, a Chinese military tradition of believing the power of literature, and was promoted to the rank of colonel because of his literary accomplishment.
Osama bin Laden: the *real* Manchurian Candidate?.......2004-12-05
Did China have a hand in 9/11?
"Unrestricted Warfare" means exactly what it says: that modern-day Communist China is dedicated to any means available to destroy its rival for the status of global superpower, the United States---and excerpts suggesting asymmetrical warfare against high-profile, high-casualty civilian targets not only suggest our own conflict against international terrorism, but ups the ante---the book even mentions Osama Bin Laden by name, and notes the destructive effect of an "explosion in the World Trade Center".
China: even its name, Zhongghua, means "Middle Kingdom", the point at which Heaven intersects with Earth. It is the birthplace of great warrior-poet-philosophers, the cradle of gunpowder and high mathematics, for thousands of years the very bastion of civilization against a tide of barbarians.
At the end of the 19th century, in the wake of the brutal "Opium Wars", millions of its people languished in the addiction of opium brought by European traders, who staked out their markets by bringing in the gunboats of their home countries.
China became a slave nation. But only 50 years later, Mao Tse-Tung---another warrior-poet in the tradition of Sun Tzu---had mobilized the people to rise up against Western control, against the Japanese military, and finally, against the pro-Western regime of Chiang Kai-Shek.
Today, China may very well want to be a global hegemon again, and if "Unrestricted Warfare"---supposedly a copy of a super-secret Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) handbook---has any credibility, then China was the shadowy hand behind supposed Islamic radical and terrorist kingpin Osama bin Laden's devastating blow against the United States---China's only real rival---on 9/11.
Ask yourself this question: who *really* benefitted from the suicide attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001?
Did Yemeni-born rich-boy-gone-bad Osama bin Laden, and his brutal Islamist terrorist group Al Quaeda? Since 9/11, Osama and his iron lung have been confined to high Afghani mountain paths or the depths of caves, tracked by Delta Force and the blackest of U.S. Black Ops. It's true that President Bush has been criticized for not bringing us the head of OBL, but let's face facts: Osama is never going to enjoy a nice chardonnay at a plush restaurant on the Champs D'Elysees again.
Was it good for the Islamist movement? With terrorist redout and Islamist paradise Afghanistan having now gone through its first elections---ever---and elected the pro-Western Hamid Karzai, with women striding the streets of Kabul without chadors or burkhas---and with Iraq's Saddam Hussein hauled up out of his spider hole and elections soon to follow---you tell me.
Who gained? In the early days of the Bush presidency, a harsh spotlight had been fixed, by the White House, on the global spectre of rising Chinese adventurism. Warnings had been issued regarding Taiwan. Congress had convened to debate China's coveted Most Favored Nation status, an economic treat the Clinton White House had always proferred to Beijing. Then in April 2001 the silent war with China took a more heated turn, when an American EP-3 spy-plane was forced by a Chinese fighter jet (destroyed in the process) to crash-land on the Chinese-controlled island, with its crew held hostage by the Chinese government for 11 days, during which relations between the two countries were tense.
The stand-off crystallized a view in the White House that China was the new global threat, and forces---and resources---were mobilized by the Bush strategy team to re-assess the U.S. strategy towards this potential global hegemon.
And then the brutal attacks on 9/11 occurred, and our view shifted over to Islamic fundamentalism. Who gained?
According to this military review meant for China's senior deicision makers, the United States may have the strongest military on Earth, but its citizenry---and its political chattering classes, best embodied by the mainstream media and the New York Times---have an aversion to body count. The writing is terse and dry---calling to mind Zen Koans or the astringent military tactics of Chairman Mao himself---but the overall meaning of "Unrestricted Warfare" is clear: hit the Enemy in his population centers, terrify his citizens, confuse and numb him, intimidate the citizenry with the prospect of thousands of flag-draped caskets riding home in military transports, and the battle for global supremacy can be won without facing a technologically superior foe on the battlefield.
This is changeless Chinese military policy, lifted from 4th century BC Sun Tzu to modern day China: strike with surprise, and strike hard. Never let the Enemy know where you're coming from. Use spies, assassins, messengers of terror.
The point here is not to disparage China: she has her own interests, as well she should, and pursues them as any great power ought to. I have great respect for China, have always been fascinated with that beguiling land, and am stunned by the rapidity with which Mao took a humiliated third-world nation and turned it into a military and economic giant. But if China has its future strategy with regard to the U.S., mapped out, we---if only to secure the blessings of liberty for our posterity---must be ready for her. "Unrestricted Warfare" is a first step in mapping out the uncertain road ahead.

Pearl Harbor Papers.......2007-09-30
This is a great resource for creating a Battle Analysis (the reason that I purchased it). Parts of this book would be a hard read (some of it isn't written like a novel). Great resource but not a book to read on the plane.
An Invaluable Academic Research Resource .......2006-09-06
Goldstein and Dillon have done all the legwork one needs to conduct research into the Japanese experience and perspective on the Pearl Harbor operation. While much of the content is repetitive, the subtle varieties of individual experiences and opinions of the Japanese command are truly insightful. To read this book is to understand, as best as one can, the thought processes of the Imperial Japanese Navy that lead to the greatest confilct of the modern age. If you find the attack on Pearl Harbor to be a fascinating subject, this book will reveal an entirely different perspective with first-hand accounts and immediate post war criticisms that are exclusively Japanese.
Review every book you read- authors deserve your input and consideration.
Excellent appendix to At Dawn We Slept.......2004-03-18
This book can be considered an appendix to Gordon W. Prange's "At Dawn We Slept, the untold story of Pearl Harbor." As an appendix, it is not a story but a collection of whatever significant material was found in the Prange archives related to the Pearl Harbor attack. As a result, it contains maps, diaries, comments, naval statistics, and so on, which are very helpful for the military specialist. Goldstein and Dillon, the co-editors, include a number of diaries, ship logs, or journals of commanders of the Japanese fleet covering the period from their departure from Hitokappu Bay to arrival day at Pearl Harbor, and these are in some cases very routine but do allow for a look at how the Japanese fleet dealt in a day-to-day way with the long and dangerous North Pacific trip and how they handled obstacles, such as refueling, morale and heavy seas.
However, the MOST IMPORTANT and significant part of this book, in my opinion, is at the very end of the book, and consists of an in-depth analysis of the Japanese military -- their planning, their methods, their ideas, their traditional beliefs -- by Masataka Chihaya. This critical analysis -- which should be read by all students of military history -- alone is well worth the price of the book for the student of the military and military tactics. But for the reader looking for battles, maneuvers, and other such action this book would be a disappointment. I give it 5 stars for the military student, 3 stars for others...
Essential primary sources.......2002-11-30
Gordon Prange, the dean of Pearl Harbor researchers, and his assistants Donald M. Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon, produced the essential trilogy on the before-during-and-after of the attack, "At Dawn We Slept" (1981), "December 7, 1941" (1988), and "Pearl Harbor: The Verdict of History" (1986). In this book, Dillon and Goldstein produce some of their essential primary sources, key Japanese documents about the planning, execution, and aftermath of the attack.
One of the key distinctives of Prange's research and writing was that, unlike so many other writers about the attack, he never forgot the Japanese half of the equation. In fact, the Pearl Harbor attack was a massive tactical undertaking, and the Japanese carried it off brilliantly. Focusing entirely on, for example, how much FDR knew and when, means ignoring the magnitude of the Japanese accomplishment.
Prange never made this mistake. And it's his research and interviews in Japan that produced this important work, assembled and published by his two assistants. While "The Pearl Harbor Papers" may be too esoteric for casual students of the Day of Infamy, people with a more serious interest in the attack, or the Pacific War generally, will find much here to keep themselves occupied.
Of particular interest are several papers and affidavits by Minoru Genda, the key planner of the attack. Also very interesting is "An Intimate Look at the Japanese Navy," by Masataka Chihaya, a former officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, who shortly after the end of the war cataloged his services' successes and failures. It's a very clear-eyed document, and deserves a close reading.
On the whole, this is a very good book to add to your shelf of Pearl Harbor books (and anyone who has such a shelf unquestionably needs this).
insight into Japanese plans.......2001-05-03
The Pearl Harbor Papers is a great body of insight into the planning of the Dec 7, 1941 attack. Although some of the charts breaking down the unit compositions are redundant (due to the same information in several different accounts), a look into the mind of Minoru Genda, the brilliant planner of the strike, is invaluable. Another interesting account is the battle diary of the destroyer Akigumo, which offers a unique view from that of a screening vessel. A real good supplement to the three volumes authored by Gordon Prange about the "Day of Infamy".

Well Worth The Time.......2007-08-16
I spent the summer slowly digesting this book and it was well worth the time I spent reading and chewing on it. It reminds of a book I read a few years back by William Gurnall "The Christian In Complete Armour" which was written by a Puritan and is a classic on spiritual warfare. Pritchard's book is for those Christians who want to be aware of what is happening around them and how to fight (spiritually) back against the spiritual forces aligned against us. I especially loved Ray Pritchard's chapter called "Singing Your Way to Victory". Thanks Ray for helping Christians remember and use the weapons we have been given to fight the real "stealth" enemy. You will not regret the money and time spent reading this book.
Practical Help.......2007-08-15
Ray Pritchard brings spiritual warfare out of the Theology book and into our everyday lives.
Easy to read.......2007-08-03
I thought this book had clearly defined ideas and it was surprisingly easy to read. I feel this is a very important book and should be studied by all Christians.
Life is too short.......2007-07-17
Life is too short not to realize the realities of spiritual warfare. Whether we realize it or not we are at battle. Stealth Attack does a wonderful job of describing this war that we are in and gives insightful ways to protect ourselves from evil. It is an easy read and does not take long, but is full of truths that will change your life. Stealth Attack could also be used for more than a personal study; it would be great for a Bible study or even a book for discipleship.
Eye Opening Look at the Asymmetric Warfare of Evil.......2007-06-19
This book is truly eye opening for those who don't realize they are under constant attack by Satan. Satan never fights fair and will lie and deceive to get what he wants. Ray Pritchard does a fantastic job of describing how to identify asymmetric warfare evil uses and explains how we as Christians can overcome this imbalance by being on the winning side of God. The book reminds us that we are always a target of Satan, because he will try to destroy us to win his loosing battle. The book does a great job of using scripture to arm and motivate us to be on the victorious side of God. Ray Pritchard does a marvelous job of motivating the 'spectator' Christian as well as those who know they are under attack by the evil one. Another great book by Ray Pritchard!

In retaliation, Russia's leader launches the most devastating military sneak attack since Pearl Harbor, decimating America's strategic air forces. Disgraced and demoted to a desk job, aerial warfare expert Brigadier General Patrick McLanahan saw the nightmare coming -- and only he can stop the relentless Russian war machine. "Dale Brown: The Novels ""Death of the Dogfight"": An Interview with Dale Brown
The unthinkable is about to happen in this tour de force of high-flying adventure
Dale Brown is the author of fourteen New York Times bestsellers, and now in Plan of Attack he provocatively turns our attention back to the threat of a nuclear attack that is beyond our imaginings.
U.S. Air Force aerial warfare expert Major General Patrick McLanahan has been demoted and moved back to a desk job. But while keeping a keen eye on what's going on with old enemies, he notices that Russia's heavy bomber and tactical bomber bases are busier than ever. McLanahan tries to get his superiors to pay attention and is ignored.
Russian president General Anatoliy Gryzlov is determined to punish McLanahan and his fleet of robotic warplanes for a previous bombing of a Russian air base. To make his point, Gryzlov launches an all-out sneak attack on America -- unlike anything ever believed possible -- that devastates U.S. strategic air forces.
McLanahan has collected information that not only foretold the Russians' daring plan, but also gives him the data he needs to plan a counterstrike that could stop the Russian war machine dead in its tracks. But McLanahan is no longer in charge of Air Battle Force, his combat unit of the future, and the Russian sneak attack has left the embattled U.S. president with few options: retaliate with every weapon in his arsenal, even if it triggers a global thermonuclear war, agree to a cease-fire on Russia's terms ... or listen to a disgraced and discredited young bomber commander's long-shot plan of attack. To prevent a destructive stalemate, McLanahan may have to take matters into his own hands.

Not one of Dale Brown's best..........2007-05-22
I use to be a big Dale Brown fan, as I thoroughly enjoyed "Shadows of Steel", "Warrior Class" and "Wings of Fire". Those novels had a good balance between technical military descriptions and story telling. In "Air Battle Force", however, Brown started to stray a little too far from the story telling side of it, and in "Plan of Attack" he pretty much goes over completely to the technical side. The novel opens with an account of an American air attack against mobile Russian missle launch pads in Turkmenistan. It should be exciting, but instead we get a painstaking description of the American attack plane's weapons systems; when it fires a missile, we get a detailed analysis of the missile's capabilities, as well as an indepth look at the defense systems of the Russian launch pads. Only a few pages in, it's hard to tell if you're reading a novel or a glorified instruction manual.
The story itself is a little far-fetched as well. While I'm sure Vladimir Putin would love it if he had an overhauled nuclear bomber strike force capable of attacking the United States without our even knowing, the actual reality is that this would never happen, especially with the Russian defense budget in the state that it is. Character development is also sketchy; Gary Houser, who is described as an Air Force Intelligence genius, doesn't do much beyond curse at anything that moves. Patrick McLanahan's usual go-against-the-grain mentality is so routine by now that it hardly seems shocking anymore (though what is shocking is that he hasn't been kicked out of the Air Force by now). And finally, Brown is so eager to show the technical aspect of modern warfare that he almost completely ignores the human side of it. In the afore-mentioned opening battle scene, for instance, it's easy to forget that hundreds of Russian soldiers are killed.
Overall, I found this book to be a dissapointment. The idea of Russia launching a surprise nuclear attack against the United States smacks of 1970's Cold War paranoia and lacks any kind of believability. In addition, the non-stop technical jargon drags the story down and prevents any actual momentum. I used to count Dale Brown as one of my favorite authors, but suffice to say I don't think I'll be picking up any new books from him anytime soon.
Techno-Drivel.......2006-11-25
I'm used to being disappointed by authors that I'm not familiar with, but this one is a real shock. It's incredibly bad. I'm not a literary snob - I've read and enjoyed most of Tom Clancy's books. But really, someone who pretends to be a writer of novels should at least try to write something that has the basics - like plot, characters, and intelligible writing. It appears that Dale Brown has written quite a few of these books, and some people have actually read them. What a waste of time and trees.
First and LAST Dale Brown book.......2006-11-01
OMG, what an awful book. is there a LESS than 1 star rating?? ;-) how appropriate that the author has a similar name to DAN BROWN of da'vinci fame who writes even MORE pitifully than dale. I am promising myself i won't make the same mistake as i did w/ brown's books, which was keep reading to see if they got better. brown's didn't, they were all so predictable and just god awful. i'm going to go on the presumption that DALE's will likely follow the same track and will save myself some hours of my life...
Now, about this book - i TOTALLY agree w/ anything negative said above - it just can't be said any better.
- way, way, WAY too much technical jargon
- i'm not a military guy so don't know all the protocol, but i can confidently bet $1MM that if ANYONE (even general george washington) did HALF the insubordinate things that mclanahan did, he wouldn't just be "demoted," he'd be courtmartialed in a heartbeat. reading about him constantly bending the rules and still getting things done thru alternate channels, without breaking a sweat, mind you, is just so incomprehensible as to be RIDICULOUS.
- story lines and situations that just come out of nowhere, with no explanation in order to "set up" the current scene
- totally agree w/ the above poster on the ridiculously futuristic weapons
i know you have to have an imagination to read these types of books, but there's imagination, and then there's RIDICULOUS.
The Latest RV-240 mm Titantium 120 rps thriller.......2006-05-20
I would have said the story is utterly preposterous until we got the new president of Iran and his dreams of recalling the 12th Prophet through nuclear war. But we now know that there was (and probably is) a system of checks and balances in even the most fanatical of governments. Ok, let's start with the bad:
(1) Plot - Russia succeeds in tricking the US and destroys most of our land-based nuclear capability with old bombers
(2) The neverending technical jargon - who CARES if it's an A64-S3 or a B22 portable plasma SAM. I, like 90% of the readers, learned to skip the redundant definitions and explanations.
(3) Lack of description of the nuclear attacks themselves. One of the reasons I read the novel was for the purported nuclear war episode. After a while it became routine...."He was thinking about home sweet home when suddenly a light, and no more thoughts were present" (variations on a theme)
Now the good:
(1) If true, a warning about complacency and assumptions
(2) Good action
(3) Great hero - Patrick rocks!
WARNING: A landmine of military jargon at its worst (or best)
Entertaing, yet a bit tiresome.......2006-04-12
This book is a very good story. I personally have never enjoyed High-tech battle books, but this book along with Air Battle Force are two very good High tech battle books that I recommend as a good read.
Someone who is not very interested in the subject, or who doesnt have a very good imagination cant really enjoy this book.
In this book, the author describes all of the weapons, and weapon systems very very much, which kind of got a bit tedious and dull. But overall the story was very good.
As many others have already said, I agree that it is probably time for this storyline to be put to rest.

Book Description
The untold story of a secret planthat would have prevented Pearl Harbor—and maybe even World War II.
Could a plan to bomb Japan and destroy Japanese supply lines, communications, and staging areas in China have averted the horrendous and devastating attack on Pearl Harbor? On July 23, 1941—some five months before Pearl Harbor—President Franklin Delano Roosevelt endorsed a plan calling for the United States to provide China with 150 manned bombers and 350 fighter planes to wreak havoc on Japan’s growing presence in China. “Joint Board Plan 335” had been proposed to Roosevelt and his cabinet by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek; Dr. T. V. Soong, China’s special envoy to the United States; and Captain Claire Lee Chennault, a retired Air Corps pilot now in the employ of Chiang. Such a preemptive strike on Japanese interests had been under discussion for several months. Although initially blocked by General George C. Marshall, the plan was resurrected in the spring of 1941. So why, then, was it never employed?
First, there were the practical reasons: Not yet fully recovered from the Great Depression, millions of Americans were more concerned about domestic issues than foreign policy. Roosevelt and his cabinet feared political fallout from Chiang’s proposed international intrigue, to say nothing of facing Winston Churchill’s wrath by diverting airplanes from Britain. Then there were also ethical concerns over the definite civilian casualties the air strike would inflict. Could Roosevelt justify bombing raids when the U.S. and Japan were officially at peace? Chiang and Chennault argued that their plan would serve as a moral quid pro quo to an adversary that had been bombing and slaughtering millions of Chinese civilians for three years. The raids, Chennault insisted, would forestall Japanese expansion into Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and the Philippines.
Painstakingly researched and colorfully written, Preemptive Strike offers a seldom-seen glimpse of the political and moral pressures brought to bear on Roosevelt’s prewar cabinet. It is sure to prompt debate, as much as the decision to use this wartime strategy does today.

A Story of a Proposal to Bomb Japan First.......2006-07-07
A fun book that plays 'what if' with Claire Chennault, the Flying Tigers and the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The basic concept being discussed was a proposal made by China to increase the American aviation presence in China from a hundred P-40's to 350 fighters and 150 bombers. This force was to be used to bomb Japanese forces in China and perhaps even in Japan. There was apparently some discussion, even some acceptance of the proposal in the United States.
Needless to say, this didn't come to pass, and for a lot of reasons. One problem was the availability of the bombers. As of October 17, 1941 there were 83 B-17s in the United States and another 31 overseas. Hap Arnold and George Marshall were not going to be easy to persuade to give up these planes (and the next 36 to come off of Boeing's assembly line) to a retired Army Captain (Chennault) off in China.
Another point worth mentioning is that the generally held view of the capability of a few heavy bombers to significantly change the outcome of a war was much higher before they really started bombing. It wasn't too long after this that England was doing 1,000 plane raids with planes that carried 3-4 times as many bombs as the B-17.
One of the really strong points of this book is the interplay among the powers that be in Washington. While the plan was being considered, this was the time when Roosevelt was winning an election on the theme that he kept us out of war. A preemptive strike on Japan would probably have been politically worse then than Iraq is now. And the presumption that this might have deterred the Japanese from the attack on Pearl is a bit of a stretch. The reaction of the Japanese to the Doolittle raids was to attack Midway.
Great fun read.

A Behind-the-Scenes look at Why and How Militant Muslims Plan to Destroy Western Civilization
Customer Reviews:
Take with a bucket of salt and demand the evidence........2004-03-16
As a supposedly educated cultural anthropologist, John Clark Mead leaves much to be desired. Where was Mead educated? He certainly isn't telling. Even if some life or lives would be in grave danger by Mead revealing too many details from his alleged forays into the underworld of militant Islam, Mead needs to give SOME details just to gain minimal credibility with skeptical and discerning readers. This work is highly suspect and an insult to true scholarship. Mead is obviously not a dispassionate, academic scholar interested in intellectual pursuit. He is instead an ideologue who attempts to put fancy window dressing on his own brand of evangelical fanaticism and paranoia.
This book will manage to pass as scholarly and legitimate to some. But hopefully most readers will know better. Mead has zero credentials (otherwise he wouldn't mind being specific about them!), and you certainly won't find him cited by scholars, researchers or in intelligence community white papers. He doesn't even provide a bibliography, sources, end notes, index- nothing of the sort!
Look elsewhere to get high quality, factual information. If Mead had any valuable, reliable information to share, he'd be busy helping the Bush Administration track down and capture terrorists. They need all the help they can get.
Interesting ideas, but vague ..........2003-09-18
This book is extremely vague and slow at the beginning. John Clark Mead takes you through his life as a Christian with a mission to convert the Islamic people, which is not what you would expect from a cultural anthropologist. Once you get through his religious babble to when he actually arrives in this unnamed Islamic country, the book starts getting interesting. He gives a blueprint about how Militant Islamic world will destroy Western civilization, but it lacks any facts, names or predictions of events making his whole idea sound more like a conspiracy theory.
The review by queltor hit this book on its nose. With all the facts included in this story, Mead's blueprint might have been a best seller or great information for the CIA, but nobody can seem to verify if any of the information provided in this book is correct.
I still recommend reading this book with an open mind and caution, but first you should read several other more factual books on Islamic Militants and Al Qaeda. Mead's blueprint can help in putting the pieces together on why these people hate Western Civilization and what we can do to stop them in their task of destroying the western world.
Highly suspect explanation of "the facts".......2003-04-17
The claims made in this book are impossible to verify. While passionately written, it lacks a bibliography, references, footnotes, and detail. Instead of answering "who", "what", "when", "where", "how", and "why", this book focuses on the "why" without backing it up with any verifiable facts.
One of the primary sources for this book is introduced on page 39: "I shall refer to him as Ahmed... he belonged in some capacity to the largest fundamentalist Islamic organization in the region." Nowhere in the book do you find out who Ahmed is, what organization he's a member of, or what region of the world is being talked about (beyond somewhere that Arabs live). While the author claims he lived in the country for several years, you never find out what country or during what time period. His sponsor in the country was another university, but it's never named.
The complete lack of details leaves the reader with a collection of sweeping claims about the Islamic faith, their schools, and hostile motivations towards the West, but without mentioning names, places, or organizations.
Not only are the claims of the book impossible to verify, the author's own credentials can't be verified either. While the author claims to hold a cultural anthropology degree from a "top secular university" (pg 32) you never find out where or when he attended school, except that he transferred from an unnamed Christian college to get the secular university credentials.
If you're interested in doing research on Islamic terrorism, there are many other books available that include names, dates, references, footnotes, and a bibliography. This book includes none of those things.
Know the facts.......2003-02-18
I have been in awe ever since the 9/11 attacks wondering why and who and what. This book is very informative and I recommend it to any one who may need to understand why we are at war.
Masterfully Written - Highest Endorsement.......2003-02-02
This book, the most masterfully written we've read since the attack and tragedy of September 11th, earns our highest endorsement at withChrist.org. Mr. Mead, an educated anthropologist and evangelical Christian, shares the unvarnished truth regarding the contemporary and historical nature of the millennial struggle between Islam and Western civilization--the Judeo-Christian tradition.
His style is easy to read and he largely writes from a sociological perspective being sensitive to largely keep his own religious views in the background. While not a theologian, Mr. Mead supplies the reader with just enough Islamic theology and philosophy to answer fundamental and critical questions, while not overwhelming the reader. However, we do wish he would have drawn the distinction between Islam's pseudo-deity "Allah" and the Almighty Jehovah of the Bible. Theologically, Islam is nothing short of hyper-heretical.
Due to Western society's 'crisis of knowledge', Islam has tragically stepped in to fill the epistemological void. While the situation seems bleak, Mead's short account of the military Battle of Tours (France) in his Epilogue was both stunning and deeply inspiring.
Our battle is spiritual. The Apostle Paul wrote, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the [unseen] rulers, against the [false] authorities, against the [hidden] powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:12.
Book Description
Did Hitler mean to pursue global conquest once he had completed his mastery of Europe? In this startling reassessment of Hitler's strategic aims, Duffy argues that he fully intended to bring the war to America once his ambitions in the Eurasian heartland were achieved. Detailed here for the first time are the Third Reich's plans for a projected series of worldwide offensives using the new secret weapons emerging from wartime research. Duffy also recounts other Axis schemes to attack American cities through the use of multi-stage missiles, submarine launched rockets, and suicide missions against ships in the New York harbor. Taken together, these plans reveal just how determined the Axis powers were to attack the United States. Whether German forces could actually reach America has been long debated. What is certain is that Wehrmacht planners explored various options. In 1942 a secret plan was submitted to Hermann Goring for the use of long-range bombers against targets across the globe. The scheme, prepared by a select group within the Luftwaffe, is believed to be the result of direct discussions with Hitler. Long rumored to exist, this document was recently discovered in the military archives in Freiburg. This account provides the first detailed analysis of the plan and places it in the context of Germany's global war objectives.

Target US.......2007-04-05
This is an interesting book that deals with the different technologies that both the Germans and Italians were attempting to use in their quest to bring the war to the USA mainland.I learned what the Italians had to offer was more surprising than you might think.
Strange and Amazing.......2007-03-12
Not much more I can think of to say then what the other reviewers said, except that it contains some strange and amazing information. If you are looking for a gift for a history lover, then this is not a bad choice.
An Interesting What If of World War II.......2006-10-30
Perhaps the most significant single comment in this book is a section heading in Chapter 2. It is 'Underestimating America. This underestimation began with King George in 1776, continued through the Tripoli pirates, the Spanish in 1898, and continued through Hitler, the Japanese, Saddam Hussein and the governments of Iran and North Korea.
In 1942 Hitler became interested in the development of long range bombers with the capability of attacking the United States from bases in Europe (not a bad thought, after all, that was the original intent of the B-29). He instructed the aircraft companies to begin the construction of such bombers.
This book is the story of the development of the planes and the plan to attack the United States. Could it have been done? Probably. Would it have made any difference in the outcome of the war? No. Among other things, think of the loss rate of American bombers when unescourted by fighters. And the Germans didn't build planes with nearly the defensive armament of the B-17/B-24.
Quite an interesting book on one of the what if's of World War II history.
While it can't completely resolve the mystery, it does lend many insights........2006-10-15
While it can't completely resolve the mystery, it does lend many insights. James P. Duffy's TARGET AMERICA: HITLER'S PLAN TO ATTACK THE UNITED STATES argues that Hitler intended to bring war to America once he'd succeeded fully in Europe: for the first time Hitler's plans for worldwide offensives using his new secret weapons are revealed, with chapters recounting other Axis schemes for attack and how planners considered various options for conquest.

The Luftwaffe dreams of bombing America.......2005-10-07
Well-written and illustrated, Duffy's book is a readable introduction to the varied plans of both Germany and Italy to attack the United States from a distance during the Second World War. The book is wide-ranging, though lacking in some detail at points. However, there are endnotes and a bibliography (which also lists some websites), so the advanced reader can investigate further.
This was a fairly easy read, with decent illustrations to help the reader picture in his/her mind the various plans and vehicles that the Axis had in its plans.
A good introduction to this topic.
