Only Terry.......2007-09-26
Terry seems to have Richard loose that woman more then anything in the world but over all he makes him losign her interesting each time....if you're looking at this you read all the others most likely so you know the deal
Disappointing ovreall with sparks of quality here and there.......2007-09-20
I am about ready to give up on this series, but I think I can make it one more book. This one was again disappointing. It rambled on and on over the exact same tired ground covered in other books. Then there would be a bit of action that was interesting and might have a good twist. Then it would ramble some more. I skipped whole paragraphs and pages and missed none of the plot. If you have stuck it out this long with the series, sure, so ahead. Otherwise don't bother.

Phantom by Terry Godkind is the second book in the Chainfire trilogy, but also the tenth book in the Sword of Truth saga. For people not familiar with Mr. Goodkind, it may sound odd that a book is part of a trilogy and a saga at the same time, but that is the case with this book. The Chainfire trilogy is merely the final three books in the saga. By all accounts, the final book in the Chainfire trilogy, will in fact be the last book in the Sword of Truth saga. The saga that was started back in 1994 with Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) is due to close with the next book. There have been a mix of gems and duds among the books, but over all it's proven to be a solid series.
The overall plot of this book is almost identical to the plot of the previous book, Chainfire: Chainfire Trilogy, Part 1 (Sword of Truth, Book 9). In that Richard is still searching for Kahlan. The only difference is that in Chainfire, Richard had convinced those closest to him (Zed, Cara, Nicci etc) that Kahlan does exists. Sadly, nothing much changes in terms of that plot line. It almost seems as though Mr. Goodkind wants to milk that piece of plot for all it's worth. There are a few other subplots sprinkled in for good measure as well. Such as the Boxes of Orden and just what they can do. I particularly like this subplot because it ties up events from book one and is obviously bringing things together. There is also, as with previous books, a great deal of discussion of prophecy. This subplot seems to make the book become sluggish and redundant due to the fact the characters seem as though they are constantly repeating themselves. There is also the additional subplot of the First Grand Wizard, Baraccus, and the events he started way back when. Certainly, an interesting addition to the story.
The characters are largely the same characters that were present in the previous book, and the entire saga. There is not much character development at all for the main heroes. In fact, the character that seems to develop the most is Emperor Jagang. Jagang's development mostly centers on readers just leaning more about him. There is no real growth for the characters. At times, this novel felt as though the characters were secondary and they were being dragged along by the story. This is the second book in a row where Mr. Goodkind has offered very little in the way of character development. I was disappointed, especially being that this is the second to last book in the entire series to have flat characters, after readers have invested so much time following the story. I sincerely hope, with the last book, Mr. Goodkind adds a great deal of character development.
I have a few criticisms about this novel.
One being that at times the dialog drags on, and on... and on. The characters say the same thing over and over again. It is almost as though Mr. Goodkind is saying to the reader "I want you to get this point." And then proceeds to beat the reader over the head with the point.
Secondly, there are several times in this novel where the characters are struggling when suddenly one of the characters has an `ah ha!' moment and suddenly figures out a very vexing problem and has all the answers. This is very frustrating as a reader to see things `given' to the characters so easily. This happens no less than three times in this story.
Also, as I talked about above, the simple lack of character development. Sure, the story as a whole is advanced, but in terms of character development there is very little to be found.
Overall this is a slightly disappointing book. As a reader, I don't feel like a whole lot was accomplished in the broad scope of things. Fans of the series will certainly need to read this book, after all there is only one more left to complete the tale. People considering reading this novel, without prior knowledge of the series, need to really go back and start from the beginning. There are events and characters in this book that are discussed, or mentioned that would make no sense without reading the previous books. I would most likely recommend this series as a whole to more adult fantasy readers, yet in the same breath I think there are better fantasy series out there right now with less philosophical discussion based on the author's views and beliefs. This is simply an average fantasy book at best.
Phantom.......2007-09-08
As always Terry Goodkind keeps writing the books that you can not put down. The Phantom is deep into the series of Wizards first rule books (book 10) and it seems sometimes the "catching up" is a little tiresome but I just skip over these parts and truley love all the books that I have read by Terry Goodkind.
The continuation.......2007-09-01
TG in his SFT series has always felt the need to repeat himself hundreds of times so that a full third of the book rehashes the series up to the current point. However up till now the story had continued to advance enough that by the end of whatever book I had read it seemed worth reading. Phantom was a complete disappointment in that it did not. As slow paced as his books are I somehow doubt he'll be able to masterfully end what still stands in my mind as a good series in one final novel. Those who have the time I still would recommend the series, this book one just has to suffer through and in all honesty may not even be that bad if the reader can quickly move to the next one due in Nov 07'.
Book Description
Written in a way that makes the most complex findings of research understandable and usable in the real educational world, this book offers comprehensive coverage of all of the issues that are pertinent to teaching students with severe disabilities. The authors clearly and completely address both methodology and curriculum, presenting topics in the order in which a teacher would approach them: prior considerations, planning and assessment, general instructional procedures, and, finally, procedures targeted to learners with specific disabling conditions. In addition, they pay thoughtful attention to assessment, the role of paraprofessionals, and multicultural concerns. For teachers and future teachers of students with severe/multiple disabilities.

Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities (3rd Edition) .......2007-09-28
I don't think that anyone will buy this book unless they have to. It has good up-to-date info on special education and how to do great things for these students, but I don't think many of the authors have worked in a real school in the last couple of years.
Introduction to Severe Disabilities 101.......2003-08-21
Teaching Students with Severe Disabilities is almost the best introduction a student can have to this field of education.
Drs Westling and Fox outline in each chapter another area you will encounter in educating students with severe disabilities.
Unlike some textbooks this book is not overly weighted with jargon,or written to a level that requires expert knowledge of the field to decipher it.Yet it can stand by itself as an introduction to your student population.
Until you actually student teach, such as I have, this will be your best source for understanding your students and their needs.
A Great Introduction to the Subject...........2003-08-13
As books intended to be textbooks go, this book by Westling and Fox covers the material without subjecting the reader to terminology which it does not explain.
It is broken up into well organized chapters, and reads well (meaning even a working professional can cover a chapter at a time without the book making them tired). It is not written in technical venacular, but in common sense terms most people interested in the subject can understand.
Unlike other books written in the field of special education it does not presume experience working with the children in question nor insult your intelligence if you are.
Most students should read this book before attempting any real fieldwork in the area of students with severe disabilities ( instead of as a textbook for a final class before student teaching as was my situation). It will give you a clearer view of the types of students you will be working with, and some of the ways to deal with them.
Book Description
Hugely charismatic, humble, and possessed of preternatural luminosity of spirit, Wangari Maathai, the winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and a single mother of three, recounts her extraordinary life as a political activist, feminist, and environmentalist in Kenya.
Born in a rural village in 1940, Wangari Maathai was already an iconoclast as a child, determined to get an education even though most girls were uneducated. We see her studying with Catholic missionaries, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the United States, and becoming the first woman both to earn a PhD in East and Central Africa and to head a university department in Kenya. We witness her numerous run-ins with the brutal Moi government. She makes clear the political and personal reasons that compelled her, in 1977, to establish the Green Belt Movement, which spread from Kenya across Africa and which helps restore indigenous forests while assisting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. We see how Maathai’s extraordinary courage and determination helped transform Kenya’s government into the democracy in which she now serves as assistant minister for the environment and as a member of Parliament. And we are with her as she accepts the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in recognition of her “contribution to sustainable development, human rights, and peace.”
In Unbowed, Wangari Maathai offers an inspiriting message of hope and prosperity through self-sufficiency.

Stunning story of hope and action.......2007-10-16
Maathai is the first African woman and the first environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize-in 2004.
Masthai's life is inspiring-from her humble beginnings as a child laborer on the plantation of a white English colonial farm with her family, to her early education in the primitive Ihithe primary school at age 8, to further education at St. Cecilia's at the Mathari Catholic Mission, to college in the United States. She taught at the University in Kenya, and was active in the National Council of Women in Kenya (NCWK) for many years.
Many failures are scattered throughout her life: she was divorced by her husband; she lost her job at the University when she tried to run for office, and she was arrested many times for her work in promoting democracy in Kenya. One of the projects she worked on was to stop the construction of a huge 60-story skyscraper in the middle of Uhuru Park in Nairobi; another was to obtain the release of over 50 men who had been imprisoned for agitating for a multi-party system. She held a hunger strike with their mothers, in Uhuru Park, and then they all retreated to a nearby Anglican cathedral to continue to protest after being routed from the park by armed police (Along with many others, Maathai was beaten and taken to hospital). Eventually the men were released.
Maathai started the Green Belt Movement in 1977. In 2002 Kenya finally held free and democratic open elections and Maathai won a seat in the Parliament. See the Green Belt web site for extensive details of her grassroots tree-planting program. The act of planting a tree is helping women throughout Africa help the environment. The GBM has planted more than 40 million trees across Africa, resulting in reduced soil erosion has affecting the critical watersheds
Everyone can make a difference. Just today I watched a report on the news about the devastating drought in the Southeast United States. Hard times are coming. We need to learn about climate change and what we can do to manage it.
Armchair Interviews says: One woman helping other women and her country.
Extraordinary Women's memoir.......2007-06-27
This memoir is an inspiring example of what one woman can do, bit by bit, and eventually have an internationally positive influence. The author's story resonates with anyone who wants to make a difference in her/his own molecule of the world.
Perseverance and hope.......2007-04-05
When Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, questions were raised regarding her choice by the Nobel Committee. Why should an environmentalist receive a prize that was identified with peace and human rights, voiced the critics. Reading Maathai's memoir sets the record straight, and justifying her selection for the award. In this fascinating and very personal account, she paints a vivid picture of her life, embedded in the realities of Kenya before and since independence. Her experiences during the Moi regime, in particular, demonstrate the challenges a young educated woman confronted in the face of traditional prejudice as well as political oppression.
Raised in rural Kenya, Wangari Maathai never lost the deep connection with the land and its the natural beauty. Over the years, she noticed the changes and the increasing fragility of the environment. Trees for her became a symbol and a tool for protecting the vulnerable ecosystem and assisting rural population to stem the growing poverty.
Thanks to the intervention of her older brother and the support of her mother, she was able to attend school beyond the primary level, which was all girls at the time could reach for. As luck had it and, being a bright student, her convent school was one of those selected to send graduates to the US under what became known as the Kennedy Airlift: a program to send young Africans to American colleges for further education. These young people were being primed to become future leaders of their societies in the soon to be independent African states. Maathai returned to Kenya with a Master's degree in biology, a subject that for her combined her scientific interests with her deep love for her natural environment. She was encouraged in her research and added a PhD in veterinary medicine to her record. Life should have been easy after that with a good husband, a blossoming academic career and three wonderful kids. But women in Kenya were not supposed to be independent and strong. Her fight for women's equal rights broadened her environmental commitments. Eventually she lost her academic position, her husband divorced her and she ended up as poor as she was a child. Not deterred by the adversities she was facing, she continued fighting on several fronts. She started the Greenbelt Movement to plant trees to reclaim the land as a campaign for and with rural women. Over time it gained such prominence that it was perceived as a threat by the authorities. Public show of opposition, such as the demonstrations to save Uhuru Park in Nairobi from President-friendly developers, increasingly identified Maathai and the Greenbelt Movement as a focus for opposition forces. They fought for human rights and dignity, anti-tribalism and democracy. The details of these struggles, the friendships and solidarity that Maathai experienced, both in Kenya in internationally, supported her morally and probably saved her life more than once.
Maathai's memoir is very personal and written from the heart. We get to know her thinking and feelings as well as a detailed description of the difficult life women and men who opposed the Moi regime faced. Her easygoing and conversational style softens the impact of her description of the arduous and sometimes even brutal experiences that she relays. At the same time, her story is a stirring example of how one person's strength and perseverance can make a difference to a people and the world. The Greenbelt Movement is now a motor for tree planting around Africa and beyond. This is an inspirational book as well as a historical record. Reading it will make you feel enriched. [Friederike Knabe]
Didn't grab me.......2007-03-09
I heard the author speak on NPR awhile ago, and thought this would be a fascinating book. However, I just couldn't get past the first couple of chapters. I think the lady has an interesting story to tell, but I just couldn't connect with what she had to say.
Impressive, Incredible, & Motivational. It will have you believing in the Impossible!.......2007-01-27
I enjoyed this book! "Unbowed" is a straight-forward, gripping, and majestic effort by Wangari Maathai --- a formidable woman who faced unimaginable hurdles in a noble effort to help others ... and shape the destiny of her country.
During her fantastic journey, she became a mother of three, an inspiration for millions, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her life is an eloquent triumph of good versus evil. Those who have asked: "What can one person do?" Need only to read about her "Green Belt Movement". I'll give you a hint: It is about trees, self reliance, and human endurance.
Prepare yourself for spell-binding details (page 277) on crime, corruption, and monumental waste of natural resources by so-called leaders --- who feed off the carcasses of their people.
"Unbowed" is a book that will have you believing in the unattainable. Exquisitely written ... it is a compelling story of incredible courage, tenacious will, and survival in modern day Africa.
I loved it. You will, too!

Customer Reviews:
Great book and easy to read.......2007-01-12
I loved the one minute manager and I love the one minute sales Person. Sound principles in less than a minute. In the book he includes the most important thing that sales reps forget is to sell yourself first.
Light on content, but focuses on important basics.......2006-05-09
I think this is a worthwhile book for someone who is beginning a sales career or has an antagonist attitude toward the profession, but wants to change that maybe because they are starting a business, doing consulting, etc. It is particularly good for people who don't feel comfortable with the whole idea of selling, but realize it's an important skill and is even required in daily life e.g. to sell an idea, convince a child to do something in their best interests, etc.
I have read some reviews of this book that sound harsh; I think that some of them may be overstated. While this book is short, simple and a quick read, it does a very good job of driving the basics home in a way that represents the sales profession well and honors an ethical approach to business. While the ideas themselves are simple, their application on a daily basis is not. If you read this book and embody the principles, it will make a big difference in your attitude toward sales as a profession, to your customers and to your personal income.
I think almost everyone reading this has probably been on the receiving end of a bad or unscrupulous salesperson. They unfortunately are not rare and give the profession a bad name. Their tactics are coercive and manipulative. This is not the kind of sales that this book talks about.
Personally, I think a good salesperson earns their money by helping a customer to understand their needs, asks powerful questions that bring out the implications of their customer's business situation and presents options that the customer will feel good about. They also build relationships based on trust, superior product knowledge and professionalism. They keep their commitments, follow through on promises and know the difference between persuasion and manipulation.
This book is a book that uses story to demonstrate what makes a professional salesperson in the best sense of the word. In a nutshell, it's about mastering the basics and doing them from the heart, not with a desire to manipulate. I think this is a worthwhile message to get out there and it really does work, espeically in the long run.
Golfers, bowlers and other athletes revisit the basics frequently, often practicing them on a daily basis. The same principle applies to sales and this book does a good job of driving home the importance of mastering fundamental sales skills.
I agree with some reviews that this book is light on content. However, if a potential salesperson learns even one thing from this book that helps them to do their job better, they will easily pay for the cost of a new copy. If they form one good habit as a result of reading it, it will pay for itself many times over. With that said, why not buy it used if you are skeptical and worried that it will be a quick read? The words are the same and you might learn something. (I do agree that this book is overpriced, however.)
Personally, I have read this book more than once and I have periodically reviewed the material throughout the years. I don't think it's as good as the "One Minute Manager," but it's good. It's difficult to be a GREAT salesperson. You need to study the principles, embody them and maintain your balance, integrity and ethical principles often in the face of tempting or difficult situations. Given this reality, I think a book like this that inspires is a worthwhile read. This is especially true in a profession where a lot of people slam doors in your face and you need to deal well with rejection every day.
One minute stretches bit too hard.......2006-05-06
Compared with the monstrous success of "One Minute Manager", this sales version is kind of disappointed. The book still keeps the simple style to present main stages of sales with diagrams and big bold words. In each stage, it also tries its best to describe the process flow with necessary details.
However, I found it's kind of awkward to navigate in those diagrams for fast comprehension. Furthermore, the extended connection with goal setting, reward, and punishment weakens the emphasis of some key factors of sales: finding customer needs, telling a compelling story, and winning the trust.
Maybe salesmanship is the kind of art which is too hard to teach in a short book (just like the leadership). At this scenario, I would rather to read the big and great book for best descriptions (even as big as Michael Porter's giant volumes for competitive advantage). Otherwise, I'll just save the money to treat my sales mentor a Latte in the Starbucks (after browsing this book at the book store).
The only sales book that I often re-read.......2006-01-28
It's a quick-read book that reminds me and helps me to focus on what's important in sales; the customer is a real living, breathing person who has needs that may be unrelated to the product that I'm selling and that they shouldn't be treated like a statistic or source of financial reward.
I often re-read this book when my needs and wants become the priority. It contains simple messages, but they are effective at refocusing my efforts. I usually see results (i.e. more sales, less stress) within a few days.
Great Book.......2005-09-04
I really enjoyed this book. It was very easy to read and has already helped improve my career in selling.
Book Description
Will Metzger's training manual on the message and methods of God-centered evangelism is now in its third edition! This revised and expanded version of the original guide published in 1981 is written to address the concern that many Christians, entrusted with the gospel message, have forgotten the message and their responsibility to accurately convey it.The recovery of a God-centered and grace-centered gospel is imperative, says Will Metzger. In the third edition of his critically-acclaimed training manual he expands on the topics of grace and worship. And he emphasizes the centrality of sovereign, saving grace that completely exalts God. In addition, he offers a narrative approach to witnessing with the story "Come Home," training materials for Christians who want to learn God-centered evangelism, and a study guide on evangelism suitable for individuals or groups.More than ever, Tell the Truth is ready to serve the church as a comprehensive, accessible and effective guide to God-centered evangelism.

This is Ok.......2007-09-23
Right on point about using the law to show grace. Bad news 1st then the good news. That all is perfectly biblical and is the way to evangelise.
A little critisicm toward the "Jesus is love" groups but I think it is deserved. False conversions are the worst. Someone thinking they are "saved" but are going to hell. That is bad.
The rest though, is just ok. I think the point about using the law and why is the best part of this book.
Check out thewayofthemaster.com or Mark Cahill's "One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven" for some up to date evangelistic literature that is biblical and encouraging.
A treasure on the subject of evangelism.......2007-07-26
This book is definitely a treasure on the subject of evangelism, especially personal witnessing. My interest in reading this book has led me to read Part One and Part Two, where Metzger talks about the Whole Gospel (or content of the gospel) to the Whole Person (or the conversion of the total person). I also covered Part Four (The Gospel Offered by Whole People) where the author focuses on the person's character and communication in witnessing. The four appendices were also briefly examined. Overall, this is indeed a good 'training manual on the message and method of God-centered witnessing.'
I find some connections with the author while reading this book. First, his experience as a new Christian wanting to witness for Christ in a friendly setting resonates with my own journey in seeking to be an effective Christian witness. I therefore can relate with him when he said, "I was one of those Christians who believed in friendship evangelism, but for me it turned out to be all friendship and little evangelism" (15). Second, his desire to understand the message and the methods of the gospel that led him to attend various evangelism trainings and seminars resembles with my early Christian experience. Third, I can also relate with his stories how frustrated he was in hearing methodologies, rather than clear gospel message, in many seminars he has attended on evangelism. These seminars were more harmful than helpful to the gospel. Fourth, I can identify with the joys and the challenges he had as a former campus minister with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, having been a former staff member with InterVarsity Philippines myself.
Metzger's motivation in writing this book comes from his conviction that while the Church has a mandate to evangelize, many within the Church were not evangelizing at all. And even those who were engaged in evangelism were not doing it the right way. In response to this sad situation, Metzger's desire to help fellow believers led him to write this book with the intention to ""show and tell" the gospel in a way honoring to God, helpful to others and liberating for [them]" (15). The way he presented the book exactly corresponds with his goal for the book does not only explain clearly what evangelism is and what the gospel is, it also includes many practical steps on how to engage oneself in God-honoring evangelism. His methodology complements very well with that of Nick Pollard in his book "Evangelism Made Slightly Less Difficult." The four appendices are even very useful in terms of starting an evangelism training in the church. Appendix A (Training Materials for Learning God-Centered Evangelism) and C (Study Gide of Metzger's book) are especially handy for pastors or teachers in the church who want to learn and apply the content of Metzger's book in training believers for effective witnessing.
Excellent service!!!.......2007-06-15
Everything was here faster than all other orders and in great shape!!!
God-centered Evangelism.......2007-01-16
PART ONE: THE WHOLE GOSPEL
In the opening sentences of the first section of the book, the author recounts a personal experience. He tells the story of how he once listened to a speaker, teaching on the subject of Christian evangelism, gave the audience methods and techniques for personal evangelism. The author tells of how the techniques of the speaker amounted to developing a strategy of rolling the gospel up into a little tract which could be dropped out of a car window so that passers by could pick it up and "get the message of the gospel."
The author takes issue with sort of presentation of the gospel as so much less than an accurate representation of the message and person of Jesus Christ. He says that so often Christians, in their effort to develop a strategy for evangelism, dilute the gospel into a bandage for surface wounds rather than an answer to the deeper needs of reconciliation to God. Such an evangelistic approach ignores or mishandles the real issues of sin and separation while offering up a gospel which only attempts, but never even adequately addresses, peoples perceived needs of loneliness, lack of love, hurt, stress, and discouragement.
The author draws a clear distinction between the gospel and our testimony of it. In many modern Christian circles personal evangelism, and large scale evangelistic events and crusades for that matter, center around the retelling of personal testimonies of how a believer encountered God individually or how faith in God affected the life of a person positively. The author does not dismiss the possible power of the personal testimony in evangelism, but does clarify the difference between the gospel and a personal testimony.
"Why is it important to distinguish between gospel truths and testimony? In an age of religious pluralism, we find many who are testifying... To put it another way, never do we find Paul trying to prove the truth of Christianity to others `because of the difference it has made in my life.' " The truths of the gospel are steadfast and unchangeable. The author instructs us that while testimony has a place in evangelism, it is the ageless biblical truths of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that comprise the gospel message.
The author describes how the gospel presentation methodologies have shifted considerably since the turn of the 20th century. Prior to that time it was understood that the gospel message contained intricacies and details that required significant mental and spiritual assent to gain their understanding. The gospel message, it was assumed, required much teaching to the unbeliever in order that the unregenerate person might come first into knowledge of their own sinfulness and need for a savior. It was only then that the person might, through faith, receive the fullness of the gospel message of repentance unto salvation.
The gospel message is not "a pill that will cure all." Though the message of the gospel does have essential and central components, according to the author, it is not easily packaged up into a simple formula which can be sprinkled upon the ears of unbelievers. This modern packaged gospel should be unpacked and presented in full and complete terms.
The modern notion of quickly mobilizing every Christian into evangelistic service, regardless of how well they do or do not understand the gospel message is based on faulty modern evangelistic methodologies which employ methods more than content. The author is laying out a plea for modern Christianity to "taste the difference between modern evangelism with its methods/me-centered gospel and the historic God-centered gospel.
PART TWO: TO THE WHOLE PERSON
In this section the author discusses the difference between regeneration and conversion. Regeneration is salvation from God's perspective. It is the instantaneous impartation of new life into the soul of a believer. It occurs at a specific moment in time, though it is likely that only God knows the exact moment this takes place. Conversion is salvation viewed from man's perspective. It is the entire process of God's grace working within an individual, bringing them to a point of commitment and identification with Christ in new birth. For some people this process takes years, though for some it may take only an hour.
The author effectively communicates the need to address the mind, emotions, and will of an individual with the truth of the gospel. He makes a convincing case that genuine faith is that which is based in the truth of the gospel, rather than spiritual religious experience alone. "He had never really been converted, for he did not make truth the criterion of experience. There was no submission of his rebellious mind to the authority of Scripture or his thoughts to the review of higher thoughts."
The author goes on to make the case for a balanced view of emotion in relationship to conversion and Christian living. Emotional responses to Christ are valid and are to be welcomed but if they ought to be kept in balance. No emotional response leads to a dry fervor-less faith. Overly emotional responses to Christ are easily brought out of balance and are likely to lead to an experience based faith which grows or diminishes in relation to how a person feels on a given day and in a given situation. The author encourages balanced emotional response which is led by truth and touches the heart!
The author discusses the will of the evangelized largely in relationship to motive. When the unbeliever is approached by an appeal to his or her will biblical content must accompany the appeal. "Why? Because such content is needed to instruct the mind in its choice and humble its sinful desires." According to the author, when evangelizing the lost it is imperative to take into consideration the whole person by means of biblical appeals which encourage unbelievers to open themselves to the power of the gospel on its terms.
WHOLLY BY GRACE
In this section the author makes the plea for God-centered evangelism. The author asserts, very much in line with a reformed theological position that, "we exist to benefit God, not vise versa." This section is where the author "shows his theological cards." He puts forth a treatise for a reformed evangelistic model where the glory God is the ends and not one of many means. God alone is autonomous and he is the beginning and end of reality. Whatever he does is, by logical necessity, good.
God created humanity in order to express his glorious nature. Evangelism, therefore, is an act of worship as we gather people into a loving relationship with God that he might be glorified by them as well. The recognition of the divine sovereignty of God is an essential component to biblical evangelism. God is full of grace and desires to pardon sinners to bring them into fellowship with him. As we evangelize the lost we are pointing others toward the grace of God in recognition of his sovereign will. We are not manipulating them, with selfish desires or perceived needs, into placing their trust in a "tooth fairy" God. We are steering them toward worship of their King.
It is grace that makes salvation possible. God, in his unending mercy, saves though who place their trust in him. His grace is the essence of salvation, not mans free will. Man can only respond to the grace of God and be saved.
Man's will is freed to respond by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit moving in the life of the believer. In the end it is not man who seeks God but God's grace is poured out abundantly to those who will receive it.
OFFERED BY WHOLE PEOPLE
In an age of religious pluralism and intolerance to anything perceived as absolute, it is often difficult for Christians to feel free to share the gospel with others. Friends and coworkers may seem, or in fact be, hostile. The author asserts that believers who understand their fullness in Christ can be empowered to witness. In fact, as a believer recognizes the beauty and fullness of the God they serve, they will likely be naturally drawn into witnessing as an expression of worship to God.
The author provides some rather practical insight into how to communicate personally with various types of unbelievers. The author encourages the reader to know to whom they are speaking in order to be more effective as communicators of the gospel. The author gives the reader some very sound questions to ask in order to steer a conversation toward opportunities to genuinely and honestly share the gospel message.
GOAL OF THE AUTHOR
The author's goal is clearly to offer a God-centered view on evangelism and evangelistic techniques. In this regard Metzger is right on target! The author does not stray from his task at all during the course of the book. He supports his claims well and provides clear thoughts which are easily understood and received by the reader.
STRENGTHS OF THE BOOK
The book is well written and follows a logical thought progression. The author begins the work by describing some of the things that are wrong and ineffective with common methods for evangelism and then lays out his strategy.
The book is incredibly insightful and easy to understand. For the professional the book is a valuable resource. For the laymen it is equally valuable.
WEAKNESSES OF THE BOOK
For those who do not appreciate a reformed view of the sovereignty of God there may be some sticky points in the book. The strict proponent of free will Armenianism is likely to take some issue with the overtly reformed, or Calvinistic, tone of the evangelism model. The author has presented a fair presentation with the support of scripture, however, and the book should appeal to a varied audience.
COMPARISON WITH OTHER BOOKS ON THE TOPIC
This book presents a picture of evangelism very much in keeping with J.I. Packer's "Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God" as well as John Piper's "Let the Nations Rejoice." Both of these books are equally excellent books on the subject. Like Piper and Packer, Metzger presents a view that evangelism is as expression of worship as we gather people into the recognition of their need for reconciliation to God. This book is as well written and as accessible as both of these modern classics of evangelistic writing from a reformed perspective.
CONCLUSION
This book is a must read for any believer who wants to know why he or she should share the gospel with others. It is also a valuable tool for learning how to share the gospel through personal evangelism. The case for God-centered evangelism is well presented and convincing. The practical tools toward the end of the book are easily understood and as easily applied. This book is, in the opinion of the reviewer, the strongest book on the topic of personal evangelism available.
A Good View of God in the Gospel.......2006-12-07
Firstly, he is concerned with the content of the Gospel message. He discusses the definition of witnessing, how we as human beings distort the Gospel message, and what a true Gospel message includes. In this section he lists five primary points of the Gospel. The five points he mentions are: God, the law and love, being separated or holy, the provision in Jesus Christ, and our response. He says that in our witnessing we must define God and understand who our audience is. He explains how the Scripture carries a double message of both law and love, and further how they are to interact. He writes about the conviction of sin and how the grace of God is apprehended in Christ Jesus. Finally he concludes his five primary points by explaining what is necessary in a call to respond. He also includes what he says is the controlling element in evangelism and the goal of evangelism. One of the memorable quotes in this part one section is: "Well-meaning Christians dilute the Gospel into a bandage for surface wounds and medicine for selfish wishes. The deeper need of reconciliation with their Maker on his terms of unconditional surrender is omitted" (24). The author wants to make clear that witnessing involves persuading people to turn to God, yet the actual results are not ours. Metzger includes graphs that illustrate the difference between me-centered and God-centered gospel content.
Secondly, the author is concerned with the conversion of the whole person. In this part he explains how some seem to heavily change in one area knowledge, emotions, or will, at the time of conversion. Yet, the author points out is it is important that we emphasize not only an objective understanding of gospel content, but also the emotional effect of that content. Metzger says that the me-centered approach to evangelism helps perpetuate this effect of not reaching the whole person. To illustrate this point Metzger quotes James Denny's The Death of Christ: A man is sitting on a pier fishing on the calm summer day. Suddenly another man comes running down the pier, dives into the water, and drowns. Having witnessed this, I explained to the fisherman, "This man died for you!" The fisherman, however, has great trouble understanding why the man needed to die for him. After all, he was in no danger that he could see. .... Denny says that the parable of the fishermen unaware of his peril reflects the way modern day evangelists often present the gospel. They minimize human depravity, and so the preaching of the cross loses its power (111).
Thirdly, the author asserts that grace is the foundation for evangelism. He discusses the meaning of grace, why grace make salvation possible, and some of the things that distort grace. The author says that we have a compulsion to earn salvation and again promotes the idea that we have to be God-centered instead of me-centered. An interesting point is that the author argues that the image of God in human beings was defaced but not erased, which is often a point of argument for Arminians to say that sinful beings still have choice. Yet, he goes on to say that our wills are captive to our natural desires, which would indicate that we are not free to choose what is good and right. It is his belief that if we must become God-centered. Some of the myths that distort grace are relying upon our `inalienable' rights, or human goodness, and reliance upon our `free will.' Metzger refers his readers to Jonathan Edwards as recommended reading concerning decision-making according to our own motives and desires. In describing God's grace, the author attempts to explain, mostly in theological terms; the questions that man brings up concerning his part in salvation. For instance: "The doctrine of God's sovereignty is that God selects those on whom his favor will rest. God is self-determined. He has supreme independence; he is autonomous - a law unto himself. As each goes to their appointed destination in the afterlife, no one will shake their fist at God, saying, "I didn't get what I deserved." except, of course, for the person in heaven" (141)!
Finally in this section, Metzger discusses the response to the whole gospel. He says that worship is both the passion and purpose of evangelism. The author believes that evangelism comes second to worship, that worship focuses us towards a Redeemer who saves us, and that worship (like evangelism) engages the whole person.
Fourthly, Metzger's final part involves who the Gospel is offered by. He asserts that ordinary Christians can make an effective gospel presentation. This includes fears about witnessing, reasoning with people, and simple conversation. Metzger explains how our society has developed concerning pluralism and relativism, and how people have unconscious beliefs about the world. When relating the gospel personally, the writer says that we must be careful not to shift the focus to our personality and experience, but include essential elements of the Gospel message. He concludes the textual section of the book by describing some practical effects of grace-centered evangelism with a goal leading to discipleship. True conversion leads to sincere obedience, a love for the brethren, and a life of service.
Appendix A consists of training materials for learning God-Centered evangelism, which includes preparing a testimony and answering questions. Appendix B includes a diagram that assists a person in presenting the gospel. Appendix C is a twelve session study of the whole book. Appendix D is an essay on why "doctrine is not an obscene word."
I appreciate the authors' attempts to provide a whole or holistic view concerning evangelism and the book provided a catalyst to think more about my views concerning the topic, yet I did find some theological difficulties that I continue to struggle with. For instance, the author says, "This book is about the scandal of sovereign salvation. In it, I blame God for salvation, in the sense that he is totally responsible. .... It's all God's fault - a grace that gives response-ability to the spiritually dead" (13). But then, of the uses some relatively weak words to say that actually this totally responsible God only "woos" us from death to life. Certainly, this is the age old theological debate; but I believe that it is worth mentioning. I can appreciate and even agree with Metzger's seemingly strong Calvinistic views, but in approaching a more holistic view of evangelism these problems will become apparent. Metzger says, "All my questions can be boiled down to one: what was the way to witness that would be shaped by a high view of a Creator-Redeemer God who does not merely make salvation available but actually empowers a person to respond by repenting and receiving" (18)? He also titles a section of the book: Not Free Will But A Freed Will, which implies that free will without God's grace is really not free will at all. But essentially, I do agree that the author does a good job of a holistic view concerning a presentation of the Gospel. It does include what the Gospel is, who presents the Gospel, and what some of the questions concerning those two elements. I found work to be somewhat extensive in its topics and helpful in explaining the situation we find ourselves in today as we attempt to be God's messengers, bringing a message, to those who do not realize that they need to hear it.
Book Description
An estimated one in 20 Americans has a natural talent for perceptiveness. Could you be one of them? Usually they are unskilled empaths, which means they suffer from such problems as emotional instability, apparent co-dependence, low self-esteem, or hypochondria. Rose Rosetree's seventh book, Empowered by Empathy, explains how to improve the quality of life by turning off unwanted empathy.
Her how-to techniques also demonstrate how to turn empathy on. At will. Bigger than ever before. Interspersed with her teaching, Rosetree describes elusive spiritual travels that are sometimes humorous, sometimes moving, and consistently mind-boggling. The cover, for instance, demonstrates I Want to Hold Your Hand, an outrageously simple method to move an empath's conscious awareness into the physical body of a consenting partner. An example of one of Rosetree's wild but true anecdotes? Read how she inadvertently outed a spy--see page 134. Yes, you can learn to experience vividly, from the inside, what it is like to be another person. The author, a teacher of personal development since 1971, has tested these techniques. Use them and they will alter your reality (for the better).
Rosetree's pioneering discoveries will also revolutionize how you understand empathy. You'll learn why it happens and how it goes far beyond Emotional Intelligence or sympathy. True empathy, you'll discover, comes in many varieties, including physical, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional gifts. Although an increasing number of authors today discuss empathy, Rosetree is the one who will satisfy you if you're really an empath. The depth and scope of her work will bring you relief. Yes, relief is not too strong a word for the rare chance to meet a skilled empath who understands your gifts and can teach you how to make them work for you.
Could you be an empath? Three tests near the start of the book will help you find out. Then you'll learn Rosetree's 25 ways to Fly in Spirit. Plus a great deal more. Pay special attention to the chapter on Grounding, with its insights into smoking, weight-loss, and morecounter-culture but absolutely on target.
And, as always with any book by Rosetree, you're in for a treat just because the writing is so good. Between the covers of Empowered by Empathy you'll find powerful words, directed with caring intent, and sparkling with Rosetree's honesty, insight, surprises, and irrepressible humor. America's first book ever for empaths can empower you to be of greater service to others. With less suffering and more skill. Consider yourself invited.

One of the most helpful books I have ever read.......2007-07-20
There are few books out there that both inspire and inform at the same time. With each sentence, I kept nodding my head in approval because it all applied to me. As I read the part on emotional onneness and emotional intuition, I could not help getting teary eyed because for the first time I had an explanation for what I had. I was not abnormal, or an emotional wreck. I had a gift all along and I did not even know it. Also the fact that it is written by one who has actually been there is a a sigh of relief because you are not alone. I recommend this book to anyone who believes that empathy might be a part of their every day life, and I hope it is as much a blessing to you as it was to me.
Great book for understand your empathy.......2007-05-26
Some of things are long winded and not all that well explained, such as some of the exercises. I got the impression that you sort of had to understand things a bit more to really get use out of some of the exercises. Unfortunately, shutting it off and turning it back on isn't quite as simple as she'd have you believe. My empathy is very ingrained in me and I still have trouble doing it without the aid of my guides, and I'm far more advanced now. BUT... it is a wonderful book for beginning to understand more about a latent gift I didn't realize I had.
Hogwash.......2007-04-10
I was so disappointed with this book. I expected something more concrete, complex and helpful. The author used to read faces at parties as a paid party entertainer, for godssake. I read it and tried all of the exercises, and to get anything out of it you have to be one of those New-Age-suspension-of-reason types. It is simplistic and unhelpful. Someone with a more serious background in psychology is better equipped to truly help people who have a problem with feeling too much empathy.
Wonderfully helpful!.......2007-01-05
After being clued into the fact that I was an empath by my minister, I checked around for books to help me. This one by Rosetree was really helpful. I particularly liked the sections that helped me to 'shield' myself from other people's vibes. I recommend this book!!
Excellent, Most Helpful Book I've Read!.......2005-12-23
If you have lived your life thinking you are a mess, a basket case, then you owe it to yourself to READ THIS BOOK! I am very grateful to Rose for her GENUINE caring nature and her crystal clear intentions. Rose has been there and done that and is here to assist the rest of us!
Thank you Rose!

My tenth grader wouldn't put it down!.......2007-01-24
I purchased this book for my son. He read the first page and wouldn't put it down. He finished it in two days and even read it while snacking at the table. Clearly an absorbing story, I highly recommend this book for your teenaged boy, especially those who have trouble finding an engaging read.
Slightly adult content but okay for older teens.
Realistic and complex characters.......2007-01-03
I read Tyrell in one day--I couldn't stop reading. This book accurately reflects culture, language, history, and values of an African American family living in a homeless shelter in NY. Some of my favorite issues in the book include: adolescence, relationships with family and friends, foster care system, homeless/poverty, keeping secrets, and struggling to stay in school.
On p. 127 Tyrell shares what teachers and school did for him. This was heartbreaking but true for many students across America.
I will definitely share this book with high school students (Grades 9-12) and encourage them to read it.

Coe Booth's first novel, TYRELL, is a masterfully written, gritty reality check of urban life through the eyes of a heavily burdened fifteen-year-old. After his father is sentenced to prison (for the third time), it is up to Tyrell Green to take care of both his deranged mother and his seven-year-old brother, Troy. But Tyrell is only fifteen! Not only is he living in a completely run-down shelter, but he is broke, out of school, and struggling for some way to earn money to get his mom and brother out of shelter care and into an apartment of their own.
In a place like the Bronx, it is easy for young adults to get caught up in a life of crime. Tyrell knows this, but is also a man of principle (for the most part, at least). Refusing to earn his quick buck through such shady sources as drug dealing, he originates a plan to get the money he needs to get things back to the way they were. The question of whether it will work, or whether it will blow up in his face....you'll have to read TYRELL to find out (but it's worth it!)
The great thing about TYRELL is that Coe Booth keeps the pressure on at all times. Real life drama is quilted into the novel until the very end, and it is both humbling and very entertaining to read. She also incorporates real urban vernacular (e.g. "slang") to create an extremely real and convincing narrative.
Coe Booth creates an atmosphere so believable it's impossible not to walk away after reading the novel and not have taken something with you. The characters experience the lowest of lows, the highest of highs, and everything in-between throughout the course of the story--and it doesn't stop until the very end. Dripping from head to toe with sharp turns and very surprising climaxes, it's sure to keep you consumed until the last page.
It's a lot to pack into a story, but Booth does it gracefully and with extraordinary skill. I praise Ms. Booth's first novel and am waiting anxiously for the next.
Plus, she's a PUSH novelist, and it doesn't get much better than PUSH!

A homeless boy who lives in an airport with his father, moving from terminal to terminal trying not to be noticed, is given hope when a trapped bird finally finds its freedom.
Customer Reviews:
Fly Away Home.......2007-09-24
This is a wonderful book about homelessness from a child's point of view. The child likens himself to a bird trapped in the busy airport where he and his father live very carefully as to be undetected. A job for his father will free them to fly away from their temporary home like the bird that finally flies away when an automatic door opens one day.
Great, realistic story.........2007-05-30
This book is more true to life then may people would like to a admit. As a school teacher, I have been using this book for years to share the plight of the working homeless. I have also worked in the homeless shelters of Boston and can't tell you how many people are struggling just to get on their feet. This book is sad, however you would been amazed how much empathy and new awareness an older child has after reading is wonderful piece of literature!
Sticks with you.......2007-01-08
I'm now 20, but I remembered reading this book when I was much younger. It's come into my mind more than once, and I'm glad to've finally found the title of the book again. You see, this is the kind of book that'll stick with you for a very long time. You've read the plot summary, so you know that this isn't exactly a regular children's book in its mood, but if it is possible at all for a children's book to truly change the way a child looks at the world in such a way that the impression remains, this is such a book. The illustrations are beautiful and hazy and dreamlike, though the story exists not in a fantasy world, but in a very mature reality. The story is pretty unique, but the feelings of comfort and love are threads that any child could stand to learn from. I highly recommend this as a much needed book for any child's collection.
Bizarre Homeless Tale.......2006-12-21
This story is quite bizarre and depressing. I'm keeping it for the collector's value. Thoughtful and synmpathetic. Problem: Sadly, there's no way a homeless father and son could live in an airport for more than a day or two in the post 9-11 era. Even the most ignorant security guard team would discover them and kick them out.
Fly Away Home.......2006-05-26
This book is great and kind of sad. The way it's sad because it was about the kid and his father being poor and they got to live in an airport and they could be kicked out from there. Also, they are trying everything to get out of there and live a good life. Out of all the way the writing of the book is good.

"No segment of our population can benefit more from yoga than people over 50," says author Suza Francina, Iyengar yoga instructor and director of the Ojai Yoga Center, where she specializes in classes for people over 50. The New Yoga for People over 50 shows how to adapt traditional postures to suit any age or fitness level with step-by-step instructions aimed at the older beginner. Photographs, quotes, and personal stories of yoga teachers and students--many in their 70s and older--add inspiration.
One key to modifying postures for older, stiffer bodies is the use of props that provide support to let the yoga student get into strenuous postures and hold them longer without pain or fatigue. The book illustrates how to adapt many postures with the aid of chairs, walls, wall ropes, bolsters, back-bending benches, and straps. Yoga decreases stiffness and inertia, and enhances health, energy, flexibility, posture, breathing, independence, and balance (physical and emotional). Francina explains how yoga may prevent the shortening and rounding of the spine and ward off osteoporosis. This book is an excellent companion to a yoga class or an inspiration to begin one. --Joan Price

Older people people doing incredible poses, Discouraging!.......2007-09-22
I thought it would be a beginner's guide but I guess the astounding photographs of older people doing incredible poses was meant to inspire. It didn't help me get started!

This book would be helpful for anyone (of any age), it is very readable and understandable. Buy it and you (too) will be pleased
the best for elder yoga addicts.......2007-05-14
I loved this book for it's optimistic and practical attitude towards aging.
BEST yoga book for seniors.......2007-01-15
This body/mind turned 60 last year. I have been practicing yoga (off and on) since 1975 and have started a yoga and meditation teacher training program with the Aura Wellness Center. I have over 30 yoga books and feel "The New Yoga for People Over 50" is THE BEST yoga book for seniors; it is my yoga bible! Very inspiring stories of seniors into yoga with great pictures. AND very readable...the print isn't too small!

Response to Previous Review.......2006-03-23
After recently reading Amazon review by "More hype than hope", I would like to counter her negative opinion with a few positive thoughts on "The New Yoga for People Over 50" by Suza Francina.
I first read this book (and subsequently reviewed it) in 1999. My enthusiasm has not waned. This, to me, was and is the most common sense yoga book I have ever read.
Its purpose is to inform the reader about various issues affecting those over 50 and the ways yoga can help. It is a serious and helpful resource for older students and teachers who instruct seniors. The "success stories" (term used by reviewer) are meant to inspire and encourage and do not include any specifically by the author (to glorify herself as suggested by the reviewer).
Yoga classes are not "elitist" (term used by reviewer). They are commonplace in many locations and range from YMCA, gyms, senior centers, etc. Additionally, many yoga studios offer instruction for all ages and levels of ability, from beginner to advanced.
I still feel this book is an inspiration to learn and practice yoga. The models are real people, over 50, which in itself is an incentive. While some are longtime practitioners and famous teachers (like BKS Iyengar who wrote the foreward), many began yoga while in their 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Perhaps someday "More hype" will meet Ms. Francina in person. She is an empowering teacher as well as a talented author.

Book Description
Naomi Judd has been called "The Face of the Boomer Generation." At 78 million strong, boomers have become America's largest demographic. In Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully, she debunks society's harmful myths about aging and finds more meaningful ways we can define ourselves so we can enjoy (rather than dread) getting older.
Freedom is the focus, and there's no better time than now to free yourself from untrue and outdated ideas about your own potential. Naomi is full of fresh ideas to help readers look at their futures in a whole new way. The aging process, as Naomi shows, is an opportunity for new experiences, original routines, and more contentment than ever before.
Naomi offers tips on finding simplicity, streamlining possessions, disengaging from "energy vampires," and discovering the most effective ways to support your life force and boost your energy. Each chapter includes vital new health information and proactive lifestyle suggestions for your body, mind, and spirit. Naomi has a solution-oriented approach to everything from beauty tips to getting in sync hormonally with bioidentical HRT. She also offers wisdom on dealing with grief as well as enlightening ideas on how to recognize and enjoy your own uniqueness no matter how old you are.
Packed with personal anecdotes, commentary from celebrity friends and data from renowned doctors, and plenty of Naomi's own special brand of lemonade-out-of-lemons wit and wisdom, Naomi's Guide to Aging Gratefully encourages readers to believe that it's never too early or too late to enter an important new chapter in their lives and embrace opportunities to become their happiest ever.
