Book Description

Who works in an embassy? What do diplomats actually do? Inside a U.S. Embassy is the only book that truly answers these questions. Inside a U.S. Embassy is a unique resource, taking readers inside embassies and consulates in over 50 countries, providing detailed descriptions of Foreign Service jobs and first-hand accounts of diplomacy in action.

Gain a sense of the key role played by each member of an embassy team from Paris to Kabul, from Bogota to Beijing, and places in between. Travel into the rainforests of Thailand with an environmental affairs officer, face rampaging militias with a political officer in East Timor, and join an ambassador on a midnight trip into a Macedonian refugee camp to quell a riot.

The book includes profiles of diplomats and specialists around the world serving in Foreign Service positions -- from the ambassador to the security officer to the IT professional. Also included is a selection of day-in-the-life entries from 17 different countries, each describing an actual day on the job in an embassy. The story section includes 26 tales from the field that give a sense of the extraordinary: the coups, the evacuations, the civil wars, the hardships and rewards of representing America to the world.

Inside a U.S. Embassy was published by the American Foreign Service Association and edited by a former Foreign Service Political Officer. Updated and revised for 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Well-organized view inside the embassy.......2007-01-10

One of the strengths of this book is that it relates three facets into the life of a diplomat: the job itself, a day in the life, and "war stories." Of all the career resources I've seen this is the first one that broke a career into this logical structure. The only piece is missing is the all-important family piece, but that is well-covered in the companion book "Realities of Foreign Service Life" by Patricia Linderman.
Dorman's book describes each role in the embassy as written by the person in that role, starting at foreign national all the way to ambassador. The day in the life shares what a person in a specific function does that day. You wonder if those days are really that eventful, and seemingly they are. The "war stories" section, for lack of better name, are exciting and are full of high adventure overseas. "Diplomats do it unarmed" might be the corresponding bumper sticker.

This book's candid portrayal reinforces the need for the prospective diplomat (and their family) to know exactly what they are getting into. This book provides that insight, warts and all. Don't rely on the DoS's online interest survey or website to provide an objective viewpoint; if you're gonna buy that pricey subscription to "The Economist" you want to be sure this is what you want to do!

Fortunately this book is also current in that it somewhat reflects the post-9/11 world. However, with the Secretary Rice's January 2006 announcement of a strategic restructuring of the State Department, this book may need a second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Foreign Service Security Officer's Review.......2006-06-08

This book captures the essence of working for America in a US Embassy overseas. Forget the black tie and cocktail image of diplomacy. You are more likely to find a diplomat in a jeep seeking out opposition force leaders in Africa or searching the African bush for a lost American. Having served 11 years in the US Army Infantry and 24 years in the Foreign Service, I would rank serving overseas in the Foreign Service as equally as dangerous as serving on the front lines in an infantry unit. The advantage of an infantry unit is that you have many friendly comrades next to you while in the Foreign Service it is not uncommon to stand alone in the middle of a war or crisis. Most Americans do not know that we have lost more Ambassadors overseas than we have lost Generals. If you are seeking a real challenging career that is equally as rewarding, join the Foreign Service. However, the standards for candidates are the highest in the world. The book captures who we are and what we do for America everyday.

4 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for Americans living in another country........2006-04-08

As a U.S. citizen living in South America I have needed to use the U.S. Embassy various times.
I have found our Embassies, with their soaring walls, armed guards, imposing cameras and steel doors our embassies to be intimating, less than welcoming and difficult to navigate.

When you live in another country, especially a developing country, problem will occur, and it is very important to know what your embassy does, who does what within the embassy and what the embassy staff can do for you. This book addresses two of these three issues.

"Inside a U.S. Embassy", a quick read, will help you understanding who does what and why they do it. The functions and responsibilities of each of the positions within the embassy (Ambassador, Counsel, Marine Guard, etc. ) are explained by a person holding that job.

What the book does not address is what our embassies can do for you. This is would have been of great help as most people do not know what they can expect, or not expect, from their civil servants. Nor do they know how (or whom) to ask for help.

However, this book still is of value, especially if you are an expat, or if your are considering a position with the U.S. Foreign Service. Strongly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars FSO candidate must have........2006-03-10

One of the best books at giving you an insight into the Foreign Service. It isn't all encompassing and can only scratch the surface but short of living in an embassy, it is the best product around. I was really glad to see that it include the views of Foreign Service Nationals, Specialists and the Marine Security Guards. Semper Fi!

      Book Description

The first of its kind, this spectacularly illustrated book is the only complete guide to the wildlife and natural history of the vast and beautiful Antarctic region.

Covering the Antarctic continent, the southern ocean, and the subantarctic islands, this guide illustrates all of the region's breeding birds and marine mammals with stunning color photographs. In addition to the color plates, it features distribution maps and up-to-date species accounts expertly detailing abundance, seasonal status, and conservation prospects. The volume also covers numerous nonbreeding species, migrants, and vagrants.

Regional chapters describe all of the subantarctic islands, in addition to most regularly visited sites in Antarctica, and are accompanied by maps of each area and photographs of each locale. These chapters present detailed information on geography, climate, geology, general ecology, and flora. They also address conservation efforts--past, present, and planned. The book concludes with practical information about visiting the area, including details on the best-available landing sites and notes on seasonal weather conditions.

This is an indispensable companion for a trip far south, as well as an informative volume for anyone interested in the Antarctic region's remarkable, occasionally strange, and frequently beautiful animals.

      5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2007-04-07

I brought this book to the Antarctic peninsula with me, only to find a copy already aboard ship. It was still worth carrying.

Yes, good photos, but much better for the information. Details on identifying all sorts of animals, including the territories they can be found in at various times of the year, changes in appearance during the year and even a rather comical phonetic approximation of the sounds they might make.

I bought a lot of books in my year prep for this trip. This was one of the best. Must owning for anyone going south of 50 degrees.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Designed and Informative.......2006-07-01

Lot of great pictures and very informative articles. This book will definitely be with my camara and computer during my trip to Antarctica.

5 out of 5 stars Fine book beautifully produced!.......2005-01-01

Anyone who has read my other reviews will know that I don't give stars easily but I can find no reason even to deduct a single star from this book. Whether you have been, are going or just want to dream of going this is the book for you. As its title indicates, its prime purpose is to describe the wildlife, and it gives top billing to the birds - all in a level of detail which should satisfy the most demanding birder, but which the average interested amateur naturalist should also find interesting. The authors have sensibly provided a fine set of plates rather than relying on photos as the main identification aid. There are however many good photos as well - this use of both "media" is, as far as my experience goes, unusual in bird books which tend to opt for one or the other when in fact each has its advantages and disadvantages. The section on marine mammals is of a similar quality. Another section comprehensively describes each of the regions (including Sub-Antarctic islands all the way up to Tristan) with information which makes the book useful as a "travel guide" for planning and accompanying a trip (though it is really too fine a book to get damaged in use!). In addition there are good (if relatively short) sections on geology, climate, history, botany etc etc - in fact on just about any relevant subject you could think of. Indeed if you could only have 1 book on the Antarctic this is a very good candidate - and at a very good price!

      Book Description

For the crew of the eco-pirate ship the Farley Mowat, any day saving a whale is a good day to die. In The Whale Warriors, veteran adventure writer Peter Heller takes us on a hair-raising journey with a vigilante crew on their mission to stop illegal Japanese whaling in the stormy, remote seas off the forbidding shores of Antarctica. The Farley is the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and captained by its founder, the radical environmental enforcer Paul Watson. The Japanese, who are hunting endangered whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, in violation of several international laws, know he means business: Watson has sunk eight whaling ships to the bottom of the sea.

For two months, Heller was aboard the vegan attack vessel as it stalked the Japanese whaling fleet through the howling gales and treacherous ice off the pristine Antarctic coast. The ship is all black, flies under a Jolly Roger, and is outfitted with a helicopter, fast assault Zodiacs, and a seven-foot blade attached to the bow, called the can opener.

As Watson and his crew see it, the plight of the whales is also about the larger crisis of the oceans and the eleventh hour of life as we know it on Earth. The exploitation of endangered whales is emblematic of a terrible overexploitation of the seas that is now entering its desperate denouement. The oceans may be easy to ignore because they are literally under the surface, but scientists believe that the world's oceans are on the verge of total ecosystem collapse. Our own survival is in the balance.

With Force 8 gales, monstrous seas, and a crew composed of professional gamblers, Earthfirst! forest activists, champion equestrians, and ex-military, the action never stops. In the ice-choked water a swimmer has minutes to live. The Japanese factory ship is ten times the tonnage of the Farley. The sailors on board both ships know that there will be no rescue in this desolate part of the ocean. Watson presses his enemy while Japan threatens to send down defense aircraft and warships, Australia appeals for calm, New Zealand dispatches military surveillance aircraft, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence issues a piracy warning, and international media begin to track the developing whale war.

For the Sea Shepherds there is no compromise. If the charismatic, intelligent Great Whales cannot be saved, there is no hope for the rest of the planet. Watson aims his ship like a slow torpedo and gives the order: "Tell the crew, collision in two minutes." In 35-foot seas, it is a deadly game of Antarctic chicken in which the stakes cannot be higher.

      5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening Trip .......2007-10-17

Read "The Whale Warriors" and you will never, I suspect, skip another story about whale hunting or international whaling conferences or anything in newspapers and magazines about the quality of our oceans and their health. Full disclosure that Peter Heller is a Denver-based friend but I had no idea about the level of detail and eye-opening account he tells in this book. The entire issue of whaling is told with balance and perspective and passion and zeal. The details are worthy of the most attentive reporter, the depth of analysis carries weight and heft. Finally, the big moral question is well probed. Your appetite for fish may drop, but your interest in people who spend their lives making a difference in this world will increase. To boot, the writing is terrific. Many writers have "done" the Antarctic but Heller brings a fresh, cool touch. "The next morning at nine we rounded the high cliffs of Cathedral Rock guarding the eastern cape and turned north into South Bay. Since dawn the south coast had been a ragged rampart of tall fluted cliffs and sharp guard rocks at the mouth of rugged coves. Low scudding clouds and damp air. Fog boiling over the tops of the headlands. As soon as we turned the corner, the wind hit, twenty knots offshore from the northwest, and cold, raking the bay into gray chop." This is a trip well worth taking -- to the Antartic and deep inside your own awarness of government-backed exploitation of natural resources and what committed soldiers can accomplish if they decide to make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous writing, high adventure.......2007-09-29

This book has it all -- life threatening confrontations on icy seas, big boats crewed by men who don't mind flouting international law to continue an outdated and murderous hunt, a good guy with the face of a sea otter, nerves of tempered steel, and a heart full of devotion to the world's largest mammals... and Peter Heller's beautiful narrative that can swing from exquisite descriptions of Antarctica's ice coast to Ken Follet-caliber suspense. Once you've digested its message about the imminent collapse of the great whales as well as the other fisheries in our oceans, you'll never be able to order sushi again. Buy this book for the pleasure of the read, or buy it for the disturbing message about the state of our marine ecosystems -- it somehow makes the world feel more beautiful and more fragile than ever before. It made me feel simultaneously blessed to live on earth, and empowered to help it heal or slip away, depending on my actions. Bravo, Peter Heller! I'd give this book six stars if I could.

      4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read.......2007-09-28

This book is Peter Heller's best to date, it really grabs you and keeps you following along with interest the whole way through. He gets a feel for the people he's befriended in this scary landscape, and allows the reader to understand what goes through their heads. He has a wonderfully poetic sense of narrative, he picks words that come to him, uniquely apt words that really make the story come alive. Five stars, for me.

5 out of 5 stars Adventure, poetry, and morality.......2007-09-06

Adrenaline is Peter Heller's drug of choice, and for those who share his addiction, reading this book is a fine and legal way to satisfy your craving. You will be carried away by his graphic descriptions of life on board the Farley Mowat, a small boat of doubtful seaworthiness manned by an all volunteer crew whose strength is dedication rather than experience, facing 100 mile an hour winds, 35 foot waves, 32 degree water, and island sized icebergs. The captain's sense of mission begs for comparison to Ahab's pursuit of the great white whale in Moby Dick, but in this case Evil is represented by a very large whaling factory boat backed by the full power of the Japanese government. Captain Watson does not believe in the efficacy of moral persuasion, he believes physical threat and intimidation are the only effective deterrents and to this end willingly puts his ship and crew at risk in a game of chicken on the high seas. You know, of course, that at least the author survived, otherwise your wouldn't be enjoying this tale he wrote, but it is easy to get absorbed and forget this fact, so the suspense continues to mount - the kind of reading experience every one has got to love, with the possible exception of the author's mother.
If your reading interests are more aesthetic or cerebral, Peter Heller has something for you, too. In addition to being a professional adventurer, he is also a poet - I mean a very good one who writes poetry that most people can't understand. In this book he displays his talent, using beautiful and accessible language, to evoke unforgettable images of sky, water, ice, albatross, penguins, seals, porpoises, whales, and people that most of us will never experience in person.
Interspersed with the adventure and beauty is a running comment about the precarious state of the world's oceans and their inhabitants, how they got that way, what to do about it, and the moral and health implications of eating fish - or any other animal products, for that matter. Neither a sermon nor a political tract, and remarkably free of ideology, this information is good food for thought. Speaking of which, after reading this book you almost certainly will never eat whale meat and will probably at least hesitate to eat any fish at all. You may even adopt a vegan diet and lifestyle like the crew of the Farley Mowat.
In closing I feel compelled to reveal that I now know Peter Heller does not always tell the truth - at least not the whole truth. I leave it up to the reader to decide about the morality involved here. On December 25th, 2005, Peter called by satellite from the Antarctic Ocean to wish his mother and family a Merry Christmas and cheerfully told her everything was going fine - not to worry. On that day the Farley Mowat was experiencing dangerously bad weather and an imminent confrontation with the Japanese whaler which could have landed them all in 32 degree water with a chance of rescue and survival close to zero. In the book, Peter did not mention having made this call. The only way I know about it is (a belated full disclosure here) that he is my stepson; his mother is my wife.

5 out of 5 stars Superb pictures and excellent text.......2004-10-01

This book is a permanent reminder to me of this fascinating continent, its surrounding ocean and the wildlife that inhabit them. The book starts with an introduction then a chapter setting the historical background. Next comes a chapter describing the ecology of the three main regions - the continent of Antarctica, the maritime Antarctic (the ocean surrounding Antarctica) and the sub-Antarctic - further out, including South Georgia and nearby islands. Penguins and albatrosses each have a chapter to themselves with all other birds (cormorants, gulls, skuas, wakes, petrels and pigeons) grouped together in another chapter. A chapter on seals and a chapter on wildlife photography in the Antarctic complete the main book (there is an appendix and an index).

The longest chapters is the one devoted to penguins - at forty pages, it is double the length of the next longest chapter. Quite right too, as penguins are what most people think of when they think of Antarctica. You may be thinking that one penguin is much the same as another - if so, you'd be wrong. In fact, there are eight different species, thought the Royals only nest on Macquarie Island. The others are Emperor, Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo, Macaroni, Rockhopper and King. Each species has its own distinguishing characteristics - for example, the Royal, Rockhopper and Macaroni penguins all have crests. The Emperor and King penguins (as their names suggest) are much larger than the other species.

This well-written book has a lot of information about the birds and seals of the region, matched by many spectacular photographs. If you are interested in Antarctica, this book is well worth looking for.

              Book Description

Brilliantly attuned to the transience of nature and painfully aware of the precariousness of a polar environment facing global warming, Peter Matthiessen provides an exquisite account of his voyage through the islands surrounding Antarctica. In lyrical prose, Matthiessen describes the wildlife he encounters and the region it inhabits, along with historical information regarding the greatest pioneers and adventurers who preceded him.

Matthiessen brings to life the waters of the richest whale feeding grounds in the world; the wandering albatross with its 11-foot wingspan arching through the sky; and the habits of every variety of seal, walrus, petrel, and penguin in the area, all with a boundless and contagious inquisitiveness. In addition to offering an unequaled naturalist's perspective, Matthiessen's story takes an unforeseen adventurous turn as he and the crew of the 384-foot research vessel are bombarded for two days by an unrelenting hurricane, injuring everyone on board. Magnificently written, End of the Earth evokes an appreciation and sympathy for a region as harsh as it is beautiful.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Book About a Miraculous Place.......2006-02-26

Peter Matthiessen is most honestly characterized as a "writer's writer" in that his works most favorably impress literary critics more than they garner mass reader appeal. This effort is a mediocre travel memoir of two different voyages to Antarctica and for each trip the author fills the pages with interesting historical, geographical and natural facts. Unfortunatly this book has no "heart and soul". "End of the Earth" merely 'reports' two stories on Antarctica as if Peter Matthiessen could take it or leave it. The usual book jacket accolades recite "...he blends a vision of harsh beauty, a traveler's love of adventure, and a profound appreciation for the splendors and extraordinary wildlife of a forbidding yet fragile world of ice". If only that were true this could have been a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Matthiessen does it again!.......2004-12-25

I've always enjoyed Peter's books, especially the Snow Leopard. I've travelled to many spots all over the world (unfortunately, not to Antarctica yet - although my husband is a pilot on "the Ice"). His prose is a little drier and more austere, but then again, from what I hear from my husband and various travelers to Antarctica (including Shackleton and Scott), that is what Antarctica is like. I do enjoy Peter's environmentalist views, and I don't think there is any irony in the fact he wishes people wouldn't travel to the Ice - at least, not in large, damaging numbers. I think we need people like him to describe these things for us and WHY it is so important to protect these fragile environments. I have heard about many stories of many people - wealthy and otherwise - coming to the South Pole Station and other spots around the continent, stealing the geographic South Pole markers, leaving their trash behind, disrespecting the National Science Foundation rules and the Antarctic Treaty stipulations. There are all kinds of people in the world, and no one can stop them from making jerks of themselves - but we can read this book, be educated, and have a little healthier respect for such places, and in turn educate other people.

This is an interesting travel book, and a good addition to anyone's collection who is interested in travel to far-flung places and especially to anyone who is interested in the south polar regions.

As for Anne Olsen's comments - while I normally do not comment on other people's reviews (and I've done so twice! Yikes!) , I have to say, she is the one completely, totally, absolutely and embarrassingly in the wrong. Mattthiessen describes the first sentence that he "fetched up in Punta Arenas, Chile...." and she claims he made a gross error and states Punta Arenas is in Argentina. I'm sure he's made some mistakes in his book - I have over 1,000 books in my library and it's safe to say every one of them probably has a mistake or two. We are not perfect, we human beings. HOWEVER......... Peter Matthiessen didn't say anything wrong. Punta Arenas is, in fact, in Chile - not Argentina. There are actually a few Punta Arenas (Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru), but it is NOT in Argentina. Can't argue with the map!

              3 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2004-07-11

The man wears his pretensions on his sleeve. OK, I could deal with that. His recurrent environmental proclamations are annoying, primarily because he glories in an expedition that invades the space he wants to keep pristine. Major contradiction.

But his prose is often stunning, his descriptions riveting, and the sense of place striking. I came away from the book with an appreciation of Antarctica and its wildlife. Not a bad achievement for an author.

              3 out of 5 stars Unexepectly good!.......2004-05-04

After reading End of the Earth, by Peter Matthiessen I felt a lot more informed about the continent that you exist, but never really is talked about. Other then that it's a continent made up of water that's been frozen for thousands of years, you really don't know much about. He took a place on earth where most wouldn't dare to venture to once, let alone twice and wrote about it. He gave light to a place where it might have seemed dismal and dreary and gave it life. He makes the reader want to keep learning more about this mysterious place even after the book is all finished and done with. He is very detail in his description and makes sure you understand what's going on, and the feeling he felt while there. From beginning to end, you keep asking yourself why would Matthiessen choose to go on not one, but two different and separate voyages to Antarctica, one of the coldest and dismal places in the world. I would have never thought a book about Antarctica could be so detailed and so interesting. If you like learning about new things, and love nature, this is a good book for you!

              4 out of 5 stars What a tour guide!.......2004-01-17

After reading Shackleton's "South" I thought I knew a lot about Antarctica, but this book revealed how much I didn't know - the forces at work behind the obstacles Shackleton and other adventurers faced in the quest for the pole, and a greater understanding of the wildlife they encountered. I learned that we cannot understand how the Earth works without understanding how the Antarctic region works - and Matthiessen explains its global reach. The touring format is a wonderful way to learn about the history and science of this region and Matthiessen is a wonderful guide (his poetic prose is Melville-esque). This is my first book by Matthiessen, and I will be sure to read many more.
