5 out of 5 stars I approve!.......2007-08-31

I checked out a lot of reviews of other books before I bought this one, and I'm not disappointed. What's particularly great is that it really zeroes in on the local election with very specific ideas and tasks.

As I've worked on local elections for others, I can say that Thomas clearly knows what he's talking about, and he's taught me many things I didn't know. When it comes time to throw my hat in the ring myself, this book will be my bible.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Primer for First Time Candidates.......2007-07-19

This is probably the best $15 or so that you will spend on your campaign. There is lots of valuable advice which will come in handy as you embark on your first run for office. I ran for school board in my town and beat a 9-year incumbent with almost 60% of the vote. You could have heard a pin drop in the room when they announced the result. It was quite an upset. The book is a short read which you can rip through in a couple of days. A lot of the tactics I used in my campaign came straight from the book, especially targeting "good" voters when you have a limited budget.

Anyone running for local office for the first time would be wise to read through the book.

4 out of 5 stars The best how-to-run-for-office book I've ever read.......2007-05-21

Robert J. Thomas is not a great writer in the conventional sense, but perhaps miraculously, this humble and unassuming 128 page mini-tome is the best book on running for office that I've ever read. Mr. Thomas gives you the information that you need to know without a lot of filler, and he gears the book to the most likely potential readership - the first-time campaigner without a lot of money, connections, or experience. No fluff, no filler, no frills. When I ran for office in 2004, I purchased five how-to-run-a-campaign books (see my other reviews), and this was the best of the bunch. Thank you, Robert J. Thomas! I only got 1.33% of the vote (Green Party candidate in five-way race), but the tips and techniques offered herein probably saved me from an even more humiliating defeat.

3 out of 5 stars How To Run.......2006-11-10

How To Run would most likely help an aspiring politician and I may yet reference it for a friend's campaign however, the format makes it very difficult to read and the layout is confusing. The author also repeats himself quite a bit. The book is not very interesting nor is it easy to read but, if you want a book the you can reference occasionally this will suit you just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for local elections.......2006-08-24

I've read quite a few books on running for office and this is the best one I've seen for running for local elections. If you are running in a County, City, Township or Village race, this book has a wealth of real, usable information. The book is easy to read, has real-life examples that you can understand and is the best book I've seen for people running in smaller, local races. I personally have given it to candidates and recommend it to all candidates. Great, useful book!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for campaigns in the US.......2007-06-02

Must of us have no clue at all what it means and what is involved in the organization of a political campaign. This book is a bible to run a campaign or to be a manager for one. It goes from the initial thinking that needs to be done before a candidate even considers running to what are the final steps when the campaign is through. Every step of the process is covered. It is really an amazing book. The only caveat that I would point out it is its strong focus on US campaigns, thus if you are not American and are thinking about campaigns outside the US this book will not cover foreign issues and also it may bias you. I.E. In other countries politicians do not raise funds in events where people go to hear them, on the contrary, many politicians especially in Latina America try to provide incentives for people to go to their speeches (of course this is controversial) and the book for example goes into this kinds of fundraising, that do not happen outside the US. In general however, it provides an excellent framework for a very organized and focused campaign.

4 out of 5 stars Good but a little dated - hope the 3rd edition is better.......2007-05-27

Catherine M. Shaw provides a plethora of information on running a campaign for local office. I have read four or five books on the subject, and this one is probably the best - certainly the most thorough! There are two flaws, however: 1) Ms. Shaw's recommendations are very low-tech. She advises you to set up various notecard systems, etc., that could be much more easily handled with computer software. Using the web, blogs, etc. isn't really mentioned at all. 2) From my experience, Ms. Shaw's expectations for masses of volunteers is a little (LOT!) more than the average candidate can really hope for. Maybe if you live in a politially astute area of the country like Portland, but for us folks in the mid-west, getting even two or three volunteers for a state house campaign (of an incumbent!) is quite an accomplishment. Her recommendations assume you'll have an unpaid staff of 10, 20 or more. Still, even with these flaws in mind, this is a pretty good guide. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-05-23

I work in Professional Politics, and I absolutely love this book! It gives you a vast amount practical advice about running a political campaign. I describe it in my listmania list as "Pure Gold." Goes over everything you need to know about a local election. Even good a primer when working on a federal level race.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-08-25

As a rookie campaign manager for a tax levy that was already defeated once, I needed to learn and learn fast. That's what this book helped me do. I've practically worn out some sections refering back to them time and time again. We are just entering the actual campaign, but I feel very confident with my campaign plan, and I am ready.

I highly recomend this book to any rookies out there!

This book is absolutely fabulous. If you are even thinking about running for office (at any level) or working on an issue-based like a school bond, GET this book. It's written in clear language for those of us who are not political nerds. It also has tons of good examples.

3 out of 5 stars Well-written overview, but quite dated.......2005-05-10

This is another good primer into runner for or managing a local (smaller than state-wide) election. Unfortunately it never made it past a first edition, so while you'll see a 1998 publishing date for the paperback (1st paperback edition), the content itself hasn't been udpated since 1986. Other reviews do a good job of saying what you'll get in the book so I won't be redundant. As many newer texts have come out on the same topic you're much better off with one of them, even "How to Win a Local Election: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide" by Lawrence Grey is a bit more up-to-date. Arent't the fundamentals of running for office still the same? Sure, but many critical elements have changed: leveraging computers for mailing lists + consituent communication, using databases + specialized vendors to create house-by-house targeted street walking maps, the diminished importance of bumper stickers and "chochkies," and the importance of the web. These are all little things, but when added together, they're important. Until this book is updated with a newer edition, you're better off with another book.

2 out of 5 stars Same old stuff........2003-07-13

These books are like Suzie Ormans books, read one and you
have read them all. You would do better to stop reading
and just go do. So get your nose out of the book and talk
to people.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of political scene..........2002-08-02

This book presents a good overview of running for office, with all the information you need laid out in a logic, concise format. The only concern I have is that it could use a little more info in some areas - several times I thought to myself, "how?" or "what else should I do?" but the book presented no answer - on the whole, though, this is a good, good book.

You know, when I wrote "25 Fundraising Secrets, Raise More Money, Guaranteed" - a book on fundraising for political campaigns - I intended my book to be used in conjunction with a book that presented good, basic political strategy to local campaigns. This is just such a book.

4 out of 5 stars Great primer for learning ins and outs of local campaigning.......2002-02-05

This book is my first on the subject of state and local campaigning. I found the advice very well organized and very useful. Beaudry and Schaeffer provide insightful information on organizing a campaign in general, collecting funds, recruiting volunteers, targetting specific voters, and forming an effective staff.

My only criticism of the book is that it seems a bit dated. While it was published in 1998, it literally makes no mention of the Internet and its potential for local campaigning. Perhaps the authors considered it irrelevant, but my little experience with recent local elections suggests otherwise.

As someone who intends to make a first run for local public office in the next few years, I found the book to be a great primer for learning the many intricacies of organizing a campaign. It is a useful tool for pursuing books on the specifics that Beaudry and Schaeffer outline in their work.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2001-08-11

This exactly what I was looking for- I needed a step by step guide to running a campaign and this book came through!! The section on fundraising was a life saver!

Book Description

Award-winning journalist Robert Zelnick gives us an insider's look at the most controversial U.S. presidential election in modern history, detailing both the hard facts and the roller coaster of human emotions experienced on both sides through every dramatic step of the way. "Bob Zelnick gives us an insider's account of how Jim Baker and his team held Florida for George W. Bush. Rich in detail, legal and political analysis, and humor, Winning Florida is a must read for anyone seeking to understand how the key Bush decisions were really made." — Ted Koppel, ABC News "An absorbing inside account of how the Bush legal team James Baker put together beat David Boies and the Gore lawyers in Florida. What's fascinating is how much help they got from Boies himself, who made a series of costly miscalculations even as the media were swooning over him." — Brit Hume, Fox News "Histories of what happened in the famous Florida vote deadlock of 2000 will continue to be written for years to come. To his credit, Bob Zelnick doesn't try to look at everything in that tangled web. What he has done is expertly lay out the legal maneuvering in both the Bush and Gore camp better than anyone else I've read. At the end, I felt as if I understood the briefs completely—without having to endure reading all of them." — John Fund, Wall Street Journal

4 out of 5 stars The Bush Team's Successful Strategy that Won Them Florida.......2005-06-10

This was a well written book. I was able to comprehend the steps that the Bush team used in their plight to win Florida. He introduces the reader to several key players in Bush's campaign run and includes excerpts from interviews with them which provide the reader with a first hand account of what actually happened. There was indeed method to this madness! It does, however, have a conservative lean; after all, he did interview Bush's top advisors for his campaign. He also hints the fact that the RNC had a meeting that touched on the possibilities of a recount way before it ever happened! Interesting, huh? I recommend this book to anyone interested in anything regarding the politics involved in the Florida election

4 out of 5 stars More a narrative than an analysis.......2003-06-20

Zelnick's exploration into the Bush v. Gore controversy serves as an entertaining narrative and gives personality to the faces behind the legal battle. With a twinge of Republican bias (and by twinge I mean satanic Bush worshiper), Zelnick recounts Election 2000 in an entertaining day by day story. If you're looking for insightful legal or political analysis into the decision, then this is the wrong place to look, however, if you want quick read to familiarize yourself with the Conservative perspective of the case, then this is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive guide to the character Of Algore.......2002-02-05

The most unsettling thing about this book is it becomes clear that the news media, Gore's lawyers and many others, including the Florida Supreme Court, knowingly conspired to steal the election of 2000

The saddest thing to me was that both Gore and the media knew what they were doing, and that Bush had clearly won the election, and yet Gore continued to mount a case he AND his attorney's knew was a lie, and the media assisted in the plot by allowing attacks on Sec. Harris and any others who wouldn't "Play Ball"

This book is the single greatest case against allowing partisans to have any part in elections. The Gore team cared little about legal votes and less about the law.....

Algore's beard is a visible example of how much he believes in the Taliban code of justice.....our way or die.

Friends and family actually think I've campaigned before, when all I've done is study Ms. Golden's book! This book has been a fantastic resource for me, who, even with two co-managers (fellow rookies) helping out with my first campaign, is taking on alot of the management tasks. You'll have a lot of details to attend to during your campaign; this book has tables and end-of-chapter summaries to help you avoid dumb mistakes and keep your campaign machinery humming.

If time is short and an organized campaign is essential, then so is this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Newcomer's Guide to Winning Local Elections by Amrhein.......2001-03-01

A basic primer by a fellow who was campaign chair for his wife and decided to write a book. I like it because it is from a non professional, proving democracy does indeed work. Some decent basic tips for campaigning. If you are expected detailed analysis, look elsewhere. Using these tips in a local election should be of benefit, especially if you have not ran before. Democracy is for everyone, so what are you waiting for...run for that office you have been thinking about!!

4 out of 5 stars The Newcomer's Guide to Winning Local Elections.......2001-03-01

This was an interesting read for those who are interested in running a local election campaign. It had some good tips on door to door canvassing and for sign location in addition to other tips. It was written by a regular guy who served as his wife's campaign manager in a small town. She won after her third try, so the book proves that the "little guy", like most of us, can win if we work at it. No guts, no glory! An underlying theme is that the underdog can win against the establishment if they work as hard as a mule and as tirelessly as a small business owner. The Amrhein's obviously did so. Remember, the book was written by an amateur, not a paid professional, so don't expect detailed advice. It does, however, provide an interesting starting point with solid, easily readable advice for the local candidate. So go on, what are you waiting for? Run for that office you have been thinking about. We live in a democracy, so do it! :)
