Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
In this long-awaited sequel to his international bestseller The Holocaust Industry, Norman G. Finkelstein moves from an iconoclastic interrogation of the new anti-Semitism to a meticulously researched exposé of the corruption of scholarship on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Bringing to bear the latest findings on the conflict and recasting the scholarly debate, Finkelstein points to a consensus among historians and human rights organizations on the factual record. Why, then, does so much controversy swirl around the conflict? Finkelstein's answer, copiously documented, is that apologists for Israel contrive controversy. Whenever Israel comes under international pressure, another media campaign alleging a global outbreak of anti-Semitism is mounted.
Finkelstein also scrutinizes the proliferation of distortion masquerading as history. Recalling Joan Peters' book From Time Immemorial, published to great fanfare in 1984 but subsequently exposed as an academic hoax, he asks deeply troubling questions here about the periodic reappearance of spurious scholarship and the uncritical acclaim it receives. The most recent addition to this genre, Finkelstein argues, is Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz's bestseller, The Case for Israel.
The core analysis of Beyond Chutzpah sets Dershowitz's assertions on Israel's human rights record against the findings of the mainstream human rights community. Sifting through thousands of pages of reports from organizations such as Amnesty International, B'Tselem, and Human Rights Watch, Finkelstein argues that Dershowitz has misrepresented the facts.
Thoroughly researched and tightly argued, Beyond Chutzpah lifts the veil of controversy shrouding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Jewish soul-searching and anti-Semitism........2007-10-11
As one can see from the enthusiastic celebrations around this book, it is indeed a long waited for delicacy for all those who are uneasy with the idea that the Jewish People are also entitled to their national sovereignty in their ancient-new homeland. These celebrating people do not like to consider themselves anti-Semites (today it is not considered bon-ton), and are deeply offended when somebody dares to suggest that they are, but nevertheless they are convinced that the rebuilding of the Jewish State in our times is an intolerable outrage. They are passionately trying to prove that the Jewish State is illegitimate, or at least its struggle to defend itself from its sworn deadly enemies is.
And now here comes this Jewish Guru who in his new book "scholarly and methodically" analyses and proves how right they are and gives them his stamp of approval, his certificate of Kosherness. They couldn't have asked for more, "the right thing at the right time" and hence this enthusiastic welcome.
Nevertheless, I would like to remind everybody a well known idiosyncrasy of the Jewish people, which may help to bring this whole issue in the right perspective. The Jews have a singular tendency to soul-searching which characterizes them since ancient times (remember the Prophets?). We have a strong tendency to demanding from ourselves uncompromising high standards of conduct which we are not always succeeding to live up to, and this leads to very harsh and very frequently unfair self-criticism. You can find it in articles written by Jewish reporters in Israeli newspapers as well as abroad. You can find it also in books like the subject one. Sometimes this self-criticism becomes unreasonably harsh and unfair, bordering with insanity, and sometimes it is outright insane. Even though the motives are diametrically opposite, this insanity is very similar to another soul pathology called anti-Semitism.
In a way, this insane level of the characteristic Jewish soul-searching and the anti-Semitic pathology are related, and feeding each other. On one side the anti-Semite is more than happy to concur with the Jewish self criticism, especially when it is sufficiently insane. On the other side, the insane Jewish leftist is convinced that as soon as we become angels, the anti-Semites will suddenly realize how nice people we are, and will instantly fall in love with the Jews.
This is in a nutshell my explanation to this biased, tendentious, one-sided and unfair anti-Semitic hate-pamphlet written by a deranged self-hating Jewish intellectual, and the enthusiastic way it is welcome by anti-Semites worldwide, Jewish and non-Jewish.
an attempt at analysis.......2007-09-19
this is an attempt at honest analysis of this issue.
however, the various author are so angry at each other that often are more
attent at respond to each other and the objectivity suffers.
this does not mean to imply that this particular book is misleading. it tries very hard to be impartial and it almost often succeeds
a must read.......2007-09-10
This is a must read, specially for those who support Israel and Zionism. Norman Finkelstein raises questions that we should all contemplate. Regardless of your political views, you can only gain from this book. Sadly, Prof. Finkelstein has already paid the price for his views.
Finkelstein vs. Chomsky.......2007-07-16
This reads like a thesis. Almost every paragraph starts with why Chomsky, another professor at a prestigious university, is wrong.
I couldn't stand it.
Some authors write books on history. Others re-write history in books. .......2007-06-21
Falsities, distortions, omissions, insults and biasness are things you'll find in this book. Objectivity, balance and honesty are things you won't find in Beyond Chutzpah, a book on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
For example, in regards to the Palestinian refugee problem, the author states that "The scholarly consensus is that Palestinians were ethnically cleansed in 1948." Yet there is no truth to this statement since various historians have reached various conclusions. The author also attempts to prove that there was no such thing as Arab radio broadcasts urging Palestinians to leave their homes prior to or during the 1948 war, summarizing it as a Zionist lie. However, there is other evidence, which shows that Arab authorities - through means other than radio broadcasts - urged Palestinians to leave their homes, which the author neglects to mention.
Another example of dishonesty is when the author refers to the Palestinian people as "indigenous", when in fact they originated from the Arabian Peninsula and other parts outside of Israel/Palestine. That's like claiming that Spaniards are the indigenous people of Mexico! Equally absurd is the author's fanciful and historically inaccurate comparison of Palestinians to American Indians, whose territories were conquered and colonized by Europeans, and the European conquerors, he compares to Zionists. This comparison is completely nonsensical, considering the fact that Jews have lived in Israel/Palestine for some 2,000 years before Arabs even settled there! In fact, the name "Palestine" was given by the Romans who ruled the region during the second century (five centuries before Arabs begin settling there) in order to wipe off the region's Jewish identity. Thus, the author has it all wrong: The Jews are the indigenous people of Israel/Palestine, not the Arabs. Sure enough, the author mentions the Arab population in Palestine before 1948, but entirely dismisses the Jewish population, as though Jews simply did not exist there, or as he puts it; "two millennia of non-Jewish settlement in Palestine." Now how could one publish such explicit lies and get away with it? These are not facts, but mere fabrications.
History shows us that the Jews have lived in Palestine longer than any other people, for some 3,500 consecutive years. Granted, the Jewish population greatly diminished to the point where Arabs outnumbered them, but at no time during the Zionist movement was Palestine ever an Arab nation. When the Zionist movement began in late 19th century, the Turkish Ottoman Empire ruled the region. After WW1, it was the British. Moreover, during those periods, Jerusalem's population was predominantly Jewish. But the author does not provide the reader with such information. His approach, instead, is to blame everything - literally everything - on Zionists and the State of Israel, even for "Sadam (Hussein) to embark on a nuclear weapons program"!
But these are not the only important facts the author omits. There are many others. Like the fact that in 1922, the British government gave some three quarters of Palestine to the Hashemite Kingdom to create an exclusively Arab state, or the fact that the 1948 war was initiated by six Arab nations. Nope. Instead, the author writes about how in 1948, under the 1947 UN Partition Plan, the Arabs were offered "only" half of Palestine, as though they should have been entitled to all of it and makes it sounds like Israel is the one who started the war.
Other examples of biasness, include the author's mentions of Israeli atrocities against Palestinians, such as the Deir Yassin massacre in 1948, yet completely ignoring Palestinians atrocities against Jews, like the 1929 massacre in Hebron, or the 1938 massacre in Tiberias, or the killings between 1936-1939, or the 1970 school bus massacre in Avivim, or the 1974 massacre in Maalot, etc, etc. In addition to all of this, you will find insults and ridicule, like when the author ponders rhetorically, "Shouldn't Chesler (author of The New Anti-Semitism...) first have consulted the idiot's guide to the Middle-East?" Very funny. And of course, none of this would be complete without a few anti-Semitic clichés like; "Zionist fabrication," "Zionist propaganda," and "Zionist fairy tale."
Speaking of anti-Semitism, the author persistently asserts that Jews are and have been misusing anti-Semitism as a political tool to gain advantages, and therefore, somehow instigating anti-Semitism themselves. Yet at the same time, the author manages to downplay the reality of the new anti-Semitism. Granted, it is true that Jews have used anti-Semitism as a political tool, there's no question about that. But if you understand the history anti-Semitism and put things in proper context, it only makes sense for Jews to use anti-Semitism as a political tool. Being a tiny minority in every country outside Israel and having suffered so much throughout history, it is, to a certain extant, a tool for self defense; to ensure that they are treated properly without prejudice or hostility so that history does not repeat itself. Just as it is proper for African Americans to use the "race card", as whites call it, as a political tool to ensure equality and fair treatment in society, it's proper for Jews to do the same, as long as they don't go overboard. And sure, some individual Jews and Jewish Organizations have gone overboard, but the author takes this whole idea entirely out of context and blows it completely out of proportion making one feel like they are reading excerpts from The Protocols of The Elders of Zion.
Another issue I have with this book is that the author's attempt to compel the reader into believing that anyone who criticizes Israel is automatically labeled an anti-Semite. That is not true. In fact, if that were the case, then the majority of Israelis would be anti-Semites, according to the author's own logic (or lack of). However, there is a visible difference between criticism and attacks, which the author fails to see. When someone slanders and insults Jewish people, why can't it be called by its real name; anti-Semitism? The author is simply trying to play a game of reverse psychology in hopes to silence Jews from defending themselves.
Other subjects in this book include Israel's human rights abuses, which he greatly emphasizes. But when it comes down to Palestinian human rights abuses, he ignores it. He also ignores Lebanon's, Syria's and Jordan's human rights abuses towards Palestinians, which shows you how biased this book is. The author believes that the first Intifada was "largely non-violent" (sure, perhaps when compared to the second Intifada, where suicide bombing was a weapon of choice) but Israel's response he calls a "brutal repression." Yet the author refuses to mention Palestinians' own brutal repression towards their own people, like when hundreds of Palestinian civilians suspected of "collaborating" with Israel were tortured and executed by Palestinian militants during the first Intifada.
But providing such detail would ruin the author's squeaky-clean image of Palestinians, which brings us to another fine virtue the author exemplifies; Hypocrisy. He accuses Joan Peters' book Time Immortal of being a "colossal hoax" where "sources were mangled, key numbers in demographic study falsified, and large swaths plagiarized from Zionist propaganda." Sounds to me like he learned a lot from Peters' alleged tactics, since Finkelstein himself mangles sources. For example, he quotes from Benny Morris (also a controversial author who calls himself a "new scholar" and who has been accused of twisting facts and even fabricating them) who Finkelstein calls a racist psychopath! Yet Finkelstein has no problems quoting "facts" from a racist psychopath. Ironically enough, this racist psychopath later complained that Finkelstein misused his sources through selective quoting!
The second half of the book deals specifically with Alan Dershowitz (not exactly an acclaimed scholar either) and his book "The Case for Israel." Here, the author's role here is to expose Dershowitz as a complete fraud. I admit that when one looks at the content of his analysis at face value, it looks very impressive. Yet when you read very closely, you will notice that the author uses a very simple method of boldly dismissing everything and anything Dershowitz wrote and replacing it all with his own personally revised "corrections" - through selective sources and quoting, of course. The author's superbly confident, often arrogant, and bully-like tone is sure to convince anyone of anything he writes. His attempt to prove that Dershowitz plagiarized is not all that fantastic either; whenever Dershowitz quotes from Peters, he uses quotation marks or citations, or at least makes some sort of attributions in one way or another.
So there you have it: A spectacular one-sided book on the Israel-Palestine conflict. If you are looking for an all-out attack on the State of Israel to serve for your hungry appetite, Mr. Finkelstein will provide you with the most satisfying meal.

Brilliant, unbiased, insightful.......2007-10-10
Dershowitz presents a secular, logical set of arguments for the existence of the state of Israel. He does not allege that it is perfect, and does not refuse to grant concessions to the Palestinians. He directly addresses the inaccuracies and problems in many of the arguments of Israels most staunch and respected opponents while giving them their due respect and acknowledging the strong points in their cases. An absolute must read.
GRADE of "F' for SCHOLARSHIP , "F" for TRUTH , and "F- for PLAGARISM.......2007-09-27
This book written by "whomever," also gets an F- for absurd misrepresentations, including 'who' wrote it!? How do you reward a book of extreme falsehoods and distorted facts within the book, and the mystery of who wrote it? How does one reward a book like this filled with deceit and lies in "present" America? You give the person behind a false book like this a lifetime tenure at Harvard Law School. Welcome to "America today."!!! This book is not worth the read; just too much "nonsense." For truth and 'REAL' scholarship, why not spend your reading time with substative matter, read: "THE ISRAEL LOBBY" AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY," By John J. Mearshiemer and Stephen M. Walt.
a fanatic opinion.......2007-09-19
the author is so intent at defending Israel that does not hesitate to distort the truth.
Unfortunately this issue stirs the emotions of fanatics on both sides and it is difficult to read an objective analysis(except for the book of president Carter).
Bland though important to balance bebate.......2007-09-05
This book provides some insightful views and provides a fairly balanced (if you believe in the middle of the road, two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict) view. Dershowitz is up front with his liberalism and social libertarianism and how he disagrees with much of the policies of the Israeli government, but he believes that disagreement of policies has warped into anti-Israeli/anti-Semitic views. He points to a point system for distinguishing the two (disagreements with Israeli policy vs anti-Semitism) but fails to go into depth which would have strengthened his argument.
While it is interesting to see the accusations he refutes, too many of the refutes are aimed at the same people (most notably the many references against Edward Said). Irregardless of whether they were justified or not, a larger panel of accusations would have improved this book.
Additionally some of the chapters are very bland and repetitive and could be merged into one or two chapters.
Despite the weaknesses this is a good read for those uninformed. It does a good job of refuting claims made against Israel by radical uninformed college students and professors (I am currently in attendance at the time writing this).
Pick this up if you want to learn more about Israel, or are tired of the anti-Israeli rhetoric in academia.
"Scholarship" of the worst kind.......2007-08-03
As countless other reviewers have noted, this book borrows heavily from Joan Peters's long-discredited From Time Immemorial. While Dershowitz has denied plagiarizing Peters, Dershowitz's use of source material in two chapters about pre-1948 Israel is nearly identical to Peters's - down to quotation errors and the placement of ellipses in long quotes.
Peters's extreme conclusions flow naturally from her extreme presentation of cherry-picked source material. That Dershowitz would pretend to disavow Peters's conclusions, while for multiple chapters recycling her "research", suggests his true agenda: paying lip-service to moderation while tacitly advocating extremism.
For the open-minded who want to read a detailed debunking of Peters's work, see the second chapter of Finkelstein's Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict. For a careful dissection of Dershowitz's unconscionable use of Peters's material, and his amateurish defense of Israel, see the second part of Finkelstein's Beyond Chutzpah.
Book Description
The Case Against Israelargues that Zionism was responsible for the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians and that Israel is responsible for its perpetuation. The argument rests on widely accepted factual claims and impeccable sources. It avoids rhetoric and gratuitous moralizing. There is no attempt to blacken Israel through association with colonialism, imperialism, or racism. Instead, Neumann's argument emphasizes the fateful Zionist quest for Jewish sovereignty in Palestine. This quest-not the massacres or plans for transfer or other blots on Zionist history-made violence inevitable and compromise impossible. The prospect of Zionists gaining the power of life and death over all inhabitants of Palestine had to be seen by the Palestinians as a mortal threat. They responded accordingly.
The tragic consequences of the quest for sovereignty did not follow all at once, but in two stages. The Zionists established a sovereign Jewish state in 1948. Had they been content with that, peace might have followed the 1967 war, when Israel could have backed the creation of a Palestinian state in the occupied territories. Instead, Zionists pushed to extend Jewish sovereignty, this time through the settler movement. The settlements were a renewed mortal threat to the Palestinians and once again necessitated a violent response. The only solution is for Israel to withdraw, unilaterally, to its 1948 borders.
Michael Neumann was born in 1946, the son of German Jewish refugees. He graduated from Columbia University with degrees in European history and English literature, followed by a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Toronto. He teaches moral and political philosophy at a Canadian university. He has written What's Left?, a critique of 1960s radicalism, and numerous articles relating to the Israel/Palestine conflict. His academic work includes The Rule of Law: Politicizing Ethics as well as articles on utilitarianism, rationality, and rights.

COMPELLING INDICTMENT OF ISRAEL'S POLICIES AGAINST PALESTINIANS.......2007-10-06
Well documented analysis of Israel's apartheid and sadistic policies against entire Palestinian populations under occupation in the West Bank and Gaza.
This book by a principled and brave writer like Michael Neumann is another compelling and revealing indictment of the daily human rights abuses suffered by the Jewish state's palestinian victims (christians and moslems alike) on a daily basis and which regretfully are systematically ignored or underreported by the zionist or neocon controlled so called mainstream media.
NEUMANN HITS a NERVE, AS THE "TRUTH" USUALLY DOES .......2007-10-03
The overreactions of some of these reviews told me I just had to read this book for myself. It is no surprise that Neumann has hit the bullseye with his book. It feels like FREEDOM of SPEECH, is actually coming back to America - slowly but SURELY! Neumann has written a great book and a heroic book. If you want to go full circle on this topic after reading Neumann's book, then read "The Israel Lobby," by Mearsheimer and Walt. You won't put it down, as it is an eye opener just like Neumann's courageous work. Scholarly and Highly Recommended! WHERE HAS ALL THIS INFORMATION BEEN FOR THE LAST FIFTY YEARS?!
Now seriously, folks...........2007-08-22
If fairy tales were real, I'd enjoy this book. It is common knowledge that the author is not Jewish, had his name legally changed from Muhammad in 1992, and has never had a positive thing to say about Israel or anyone of Jewish faith. This book is serious humor - and to those who follow the nonsense of the author's "sources' as being reliable, then as the old adage goes..."I have some swampland in Florida I have for sale - wanna buy it"?
If the facts don't fit the theory, then the facts must be wrong(?).......2007-07-01
This book, written by a philosopher, misses the key points that would be obvious to any historian - or for that matter anyone who lives in the real world. The author writes: "The Zionist project, as conceived and executed in the 19th and early 20th century, was entirely unjustified. ... " That's an interesting view in retrospect but one that conflicts with the views of world community as reflected by the League of Nations and the UN in their respective times. In any case, how will the application of a certain 21st century moral viewpoint to the 19th century help us resolve the conflict? Regardless of the rightness or wrongness of Zionists of 100 years ago (note that actual historians sensibly avoid making such retrospective judgments), both Israelis and Palestinians find themselves in a difficult situation today (to say the least). In fact, as a philosopher, Neumann is smart enough to understand the irrelevance of the historical background. Therefore in order to judge the Israelis, he simply stipulate premises, which, if they were true, would in fact validate his argument. Thus he claims: "Israel can withdraw at will and close its border, Israel can put an end to virtually all the violence....Since that occupation has no defensive or strategic rationale, Israel has no good reason to prolong it." Indeed in the hypothetical alternate universe that Neumann inhabits, this would be a valid point. However, in the real world, even the most naive observer understands that simply withdrawing from the occupied territories will not conceivably end the violence. The violence began long before the territories were occupied (rockets were routinely launched into Israel prior to 1967) and currently Hamas, with the support of maybe half the Palestinian population, refuses to recognize the right of Israel to exist (and routinely launches rockets into Israel). The fact that the real-world situation is not amenable to a simplistic philosophy-based analysis, does not give us permission to ignore the real world.
Excellent study of the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians.......2007-06-07
Michael Neumann is a professor of philosophy at Trent University in Ontario. He writes, "I am a moral and political philosopher: if I have an expertise, it is in moral and political argument." In this brilliant book he clearly outlines the essentials of the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. He concludes, "Israel is, generally speaking, in the wrong in its conflict with Palestinians. The Palestinians, I will claim, are generally speaking in the right."
In Part One he looks at the Zionist project and its consequences. In Part Two he examines the current situation - the occupation, the settlements, alternatives, possible Palestinian strategies, and terrorism.
He summarises Part One, "The Zionist project, as conceived and executed in the 19th and early 20th century, was entirely unjustified and could reasonably be regarded by the inhabitants of Palestine as a very serious threat, the total domination by one ethnic group of all others in the region. ... The illegitimacy of the Zionist project was the major cause of all the terror and warfare that it aroused." Zionism's "leaders literally conspired to dispossess or dominate the Palestinians. ... It was the implementation of this idea that made bloodshed in Palestine, if not inevitable, as close to it as we can expect to get. That blood is on the Zionists' hands."
The Palestinians were faced, "not with a long-standing conflict between two established populations, but with an invasion conceived and executed by a political movement. No one is morally required to compromise with an invasion. ... Any population may defend itself against the threat of an externally imposed sovereignty."
In Part Two, he argues, "Sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s, there was a fundamental change in the situation .... Israel's existence became as secure as any state has a right to expect. Its settlement policy was not defensive but a form of ethnic warfare, and, therefore, outrageously wrong. The Palestinians were justified in claiming that once again some sort of violent response was not only permissible, but necessary. Moreover, all this holds regardless of whether the previous arguments hold: regardless of whether the Zionist project was justified."
The Palestinians have no alternative to fighting for survival, but Israel has an alternative - unilateral withdrawal from the Occupied Territories. Neumann points out, "Its willful and pointless rejection of that alternative places Israel decisively in the wrong. ... since Israel can withdraw at will and close its border, Israel can put an end to virtually all the violence. That violence is occasioned by the settlement policy, which is Israel's sole reason for the occupation. Since that occupation has no defensive or strategic rationale, Israel has no good reason to prolong it. Since Israel is willfully pursuing an unjustifiable strategy that it can end at no cost, it is responsible for all the consequences of that strategy. It follows that all the violence, and all horrors of the occupation, are to be laid at Israel's doorstep."

Only buy it if you must.......2007-05-13
This was a required book for my criminal procedure course in law school. I hate to say it, b/c I usually only write a positive review but this book is awful. It is terribly organized, and at times it was actually difficult to decipher what case I was actually reading. Obviously buy it if it's required for a course you are taking, otherwise, don't bother unless you enjoy being frustrated and confused.
Worst criminal procedure text of all time!.......2007-03-16
This is, by far, the worst law text that I have ever had to endure. Not only are the major topics organized in a manner that defies all logical explanation, but the note cases are completely useless. I'm almost half-way through my criminal procedure course and have no idea what I need to know for the bar exam. I strongly suggest purchasing a supplement and/or alternative text in order to compensate for the many deficiencies of this book.
I would have given this book zero stars, if possible.
Poorly Organized and Edited.......2006-11-17
I am a law student, so I have read several law-related textbooks. This textbook is, by far, the most poorly organized course book I have had to endure. This is the time of year when law students everywhere are taking part in the old tradition of condensing their course notes into outlines that can be used to study for upcoming final exams. Converting the major points from this book into a coherent outline is grueling, because the textbook is "organized" in such a schizophrenic manner. At one point in the book, it basically admits to its own incomprehensible structure when it offers instructors and students the option of either continuing the book as put forth or following an "alternate" route that involves skipping ahead a few chapters, reading them out of order, and then returning. It's a law book, not a Choose Your Own Adventure story!
To compound the problem, the book includes volumes of material that either should have been cut out or at least paraphrased. For example, the book devotes considerable space to explaining the "standing" doctrine of the Fourth Amendment, yet glosses over subsequent cases that have substantially done away with the standing doctrine.

Pretty Good service.......2005-09-19
The book arrived very quickly which I was very happy about. However I thought that I remember the book being classified as "Like New". If I were to describe the book it would have been "Very Used". But it was only for school, so looks don't ultimately matter. But the service overall was very good.

Definitely thorough........2004-12-10
You have to give the editors some credit--it only took around 1600+ pages to cover everything you'd ever want to know about criminal procedure. Seriously, though, I feel this casebook does a better job than most. As expected, it puts in the edited text of the seminal cases, but the casebook does the best between the cases. The notes that follow the cases are incredibly comprehensive. Instead of just adding a couple of squib cases, the notes seem to take the reader down the complete path(s) of the law since the case. It's a great resource, but it the level of detail makes straight reading kind of hairy... but hey. Last time I checked, people don't read casebooks for pleasure.
Maybe the true solution is an extension from 4 credits to 8........2000-01-30
This text is not only voluminous, it is quite dense. While it looks and feels as exciting as Evidence, when you turn the pages, it has a tendency to bore. Needs more case law and less editorial bashing of both students and advocates. xoxo Snuffy
Book Description
Learn the secrets the Israelis have gleaned from years of prevailing in hostile territory. Israeli self-defense and small arms specialist Eugene Sockut presents hard-learned survival tactics, including adopting the right mind-set, using "hot" and "cold" weapons, securing your home and surviving a riot. For academic study only.
Customer Reviews:
Worst Case Scenario.......2007-06-17
Sockut covers a wide range of subjects; mind-set, "cold" weapons, "hot" weapons, vehicle defense, home defense, riots, etc... Although not applicable to most situations in the U.S., it does give insight into a worst case scenario.
Many of the case studies involve settlers in the occupied territories as well as Unit 101 and the Israeli Paratrooper Brigade covering the exploits of Ariel Sharon, Schlomo Baum and Eugene Sockut.
Although written in 1995, it could use an update to cover events since 9/11. My impression is the updated version would start with the phrase; As I way saying earlier..."
Great book on how to survive in a civilian war zone for those interested in survival, self-defense, conflict in the Middle East, Israli history, etc...
Book pulls no punches.......2007-05-25
I found this book extremely informative. Illustrations, personal stories and philosophy of self defense all make up this great book. This book hands down is one of the most informative books. The author doesn't come across arrogant or a know it all. However he does give over information that can save a persons life. From how to survive a riot to how to respond to a mugging it covers it all. The book draws from experience in Israel and shows you how you can implement those same life saving techniques where ever you find yourself. As I said before the book covers philosophy, mind set of a survivor all the way to what weapons to use. I recommend this book to everyone serious about self defense and street survival.
Outdated........2007-05-19
Outdated. Poor quality typical of paladin press. If you really want to learn combat, attend one of those gun camps run by ex-operators. Better than Army training!
Interesting Reading of an Old West Type of World.......2006-12-24
This is a book that one would have to call paranoid if the situations involved hadn't become so commonplace around the world. Here in the United States there are an awful lot of streets that I don't want to walk down. And there are times which seem to happen when going outside is downright risky.
This book concentrates on stories from Israel where a security expert, especially one working for the Government can get a lot of practice. This book talks about three aspects of survival in bad situations.
First it talks about mental attitude. The ability to enter a situation where people are shooting guns, throwing Molotov coctails, and the like is simply different for the average civilian, the new solder and the combat vet.
Second it talks about equipment, particularily knives and guns. Not only the equipment itself, but how to carry it, when to use it, what to do with it. The nature of the writing speaks of a lot of testing, a lot of practice in actually carrying weapons ready for use.
Third is a set of interviews where the author reports on the first hand experience of people actually engaged in situations where force, sometimes deadly force was used.
I certainly hope to never be in a situation like the ones described. Then again, I saw the pictures coming from New Orleans after the flood. And an article in the paper the other day said that the area in Houston where the majority of New Orleans refuges moved has become the highest crime rate area of the city. It's a strange time we live in.
There are some excellent lessons to be learned here.......2006-12-15
It's difficult to find good self-defense information. That's probably because personal preferences/strengths/weaknesses play such a large part in determining what works for you.
It's also because many "experts" have not lived in the trenches and back alleys of life.
This author has been there and done that. There are some real gems to take away from this book.
