Veteran political strategist James Carville has always had a knack for being concise. He is, after all, credited with coining "It's the economy, stupid" while directing the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. And as host of CNN's Crossfire, he favored a combative in-your-face approach that stood in stark contrast to the stereotype of the mushy liberal. In Had Enough, Carville, along with co-author Jeff Nussbaum, takes that economic phrasing and aggressive style to offer a handbook for lefties tired of losing arguments and elections. To point out how fundamentally misguided he believes the GOP to be, Carville goes straight to the preamble to the U.S. Constitution. While Republicans can be credited with providing for the common defense, Carville says, they have failed miserably on all other directives issued by the founding fathers on what government is supposed to do, including promoting the general welfare, establishing justice, ensuring domestic tranquility, and securing the blessings of liberty for ourselves and posterity. Although the arguments are not remarkably different from those made in a slew of other lefty books (Bush's tax cuts favor the rich, Republicans seek to curtail civil liberties), the book also offers "Had Enough" solutions to pressing issues of public policy that will come in handy for liberals looking to defeat a conservative brother-in-law in a political argument or even hold their own on Crossfire. These solutions always sound eminently reasonable, although that's due in large part to their being contrasted to Carville's interpretation of Bush and company's approach ("Use everything as an excuse to dig, drill, and burn.") Still, Carville and Nussbaum make a cogent, impassioned, and highly entertaining indictment of the Bush administration, which, combined with a smattering of incongruously placed but nonetheless tempting Cajun recipes, makes Had Enough a worthwhile read. --John Moe

Book Description

Have you had enough of George W. Bush and the Republican right? Are you sick and tired of the tax-cutting, environment-desecrating, secret-keeping, influence-peddling, war-mongering, free speech-hating hypocrites who occupy America's halls of power? If so, you have company -- James Carville.

Like James Carville, America has been bruised and battered by the Republicans who are running our country and running it into the ground. The Bush administration has squandered a five-trillion-dollar surplus and created a five-trillion-dollar projected deficit. Their tax cut for the rich was supposed to create jobs -- but instead America has lost more than three million of them. This administration was supposed to bring honor and dignity to the White House but instead brought lies, leaks, secrecy, and fear. They promised to make the country stronger and safer but instead they've left us overstretched, isolated, and insecure.

And Carville has had enough.

In Had Enough? the legendary political adviser comes out of his corner swinging, taking on the Bush White House and the Republican leaders in Congress on every front -- from the economy to education to foreign affairs. But he doesn't just attack; he lays out constructive "had enough" solutions for healing the damage done by the Republicans and helping disheartened Democrats get back on their feet. In addition, he offers "Ten Rules for Progressives to Live By" and a new War Room mantra for a new era.

Had Enough? is a rousing handbook for taking back the country, for fighting back the right wing, and for returning the power to the people.

1 out of 5 stars Carville? Writing about the Constitution?.......2007-10-01

I actually did finish this book which surprised me. I usually find people like Carville so intellectually bankrupt that they are simply unreadable.

He actually did a good job of making his case. Although I disagree with virtually everything this guy stands for, this book is readable.

Where Carville loses it is where he drones on and on in the book about how liberals are the real defenders of the Constitution. He attempts to posit that left wingers actually support and believe in the Constitution itself. He tries to give example after example of how conservatives violate the Constituiton. The problem with that argument is that Carville, being a good liberal, tries to find "rights" in the Constitution that are not there and have never been there - like the right to have an abortion. It simply is not in the Constitution, no matter how hard you try to dig for it.

It is that reason that this book is built on a false premise. It's kind of like trying to write a book suggesting that 2 + 2 equals five. It simply is not true.

5 out of 5 stars Take Control of our Country.......2007-02-26

Carville provides facts about present problems and wrongdoers. He uses his experience and knowledge to explain how things have become as bad as they are, the ways neoconservatives and their leader think, address self-made problems and only make them worse. He also gives feasible methods that can be used to correct our fractured society and how we should take back our stolen country.

It's a good read if you're not aware of how harmed the U.S. is. The book should turn any conservative supporter inside out.

5 out of 5 stars Carville hits the nail on the head on every page and then some........2006-05-21

"You know, back in 2000 a Republican friend of mine warned me that if I voted for Al Gore and he won, the stock market would tank, we'd lose millions of jobs, and our military would be totally overstretched. You know what: I did vote for Al Gore, he did win, and I'll be damned if all those things didn't come true." (excerpt from Carville's "Had Enough?")

However, as the title "Had Enough?" implies, Carville doesn't only limit himself to clearly analyzing what's sadly wrong with the Bush administration's policies and how they have actually damaged and continue to harm America's national security, but he also (quite honestly) examines what's wrong with the Democratic Party today. As Carville so aptly puts it, many Americans (including Democrats) feel more secure voting for a Republican candidate who's strong and wrong than a Democratic one who's weak and right. Carville argues that the Democratic Party should be (as it has historically proven itself to be under past Democratic presidents like FDR & Truman) both strong and right. Otherwise, as a nation that continues on the belligerent course of the present administration, the U.S.A. will shamefully assume the supreme role of a world class bully instead of a world class leader in the eyes of the post-Cold War world.

"Had Enough?" Yeah, that's putting it mildly.

5 out of 5 stars Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-02-09

If there has ever been an American patriot, James Carville is one. This book, as expected, gives one hope and a heartfelt laugh. And after six years of George W. Bush, a heartfelt laugh is a welcome moment in the day of any American who puts his or her country before their political party.

Read this book, and if you're like me, you will learn things that can change your life for the better. Did you know that if you replaced just four 100-watt incandescent bulbs that burn four or more hours a day in your home with four 23-watt fluorescent bulbs, you'd get the same amount of light; but, over three years, you'd also save at least 452 kilowatt-hours of electricity? Don't sound like much? Think again. If every household in America did this, we'd save as much energy as is consumed by 7 million cars in one year. Carville's point is: we do not have to send young Americans off to be needlessly murdered for oil, not to mention that we've needlessly murdered thousands of men, women and children whose only WMDs were goats. I hope Carville won't mind, but I've just got to slip two words in here about Franken's book, "The Truth". Read it!

I know that most Democrats are disenchanted with their party; but trust me, just being disenchanted would be wonderful. I'm Bob Miller, a registered Republican, and like the city where George W. Bush was born, I apologize.

5 out of 5 stars Advocates alternatives instead of just arguing.......2005-11-09

I recommend this book to any liberal who is tired of reading books who only argue about how bad the right is without advocating any specific policies. Carville's book is largely a description of alternate policies that beat the crap out of conservative ones, and it's refreshing. It gives me more hope and optimism than other angrier books.

It's also very funny, too, which is a plus.

5 out of 5 stars We all feel like Benny sometimes.......2007-09-12

Benny just doesn't want to do what he is told. He is one grumpy little piglet. But, during his foray into the outside world, he realizes what a great life he has at home with his Mama. Very fun book in every way. I love too how it validates feeling grumpy sometimes. Fun references for the adults reading it aloud too.

5 out of 5 stars "Oh, Benny".......2001-03-03

Benny's not the only one getting angry in this book, Mama is just as frustrated as all her cleaning is being sabotaged by uncooperative Benny. Benny has had enough when Mama tries to wash Little Piggy and declares "I can't live here" as he walks out the door with Little Piggy in tow. I love Benny's facial expressions of mad, happy, mischevious and finally happy as he returns home after an adventure that ends up with a clean Little Piggy.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough!.......2000-12-02

This is my new favorite book. I read this to a group of preschoolers and their parents, and the adults liked it as much as the kids. It's wonderful to see a character in a picture book get frustrated and really mad! But the book is also sweet and very funny in a modern, quirky way.

4 out of 5 stars Benny's had enough.......2000-04-06

Benny's had enough is a wonderful book about a litle pig who doesn't want to cooperate with his mama while she is cleaning. Finally, Benny decides he's had enough. He and his dirty side-kick, Little Piggy, go out to find a new place to live. Benny realizes life on his own isn't as wonderful as he thought. My 2 year old daughter LOVES this book. (I love this book!) She relates to Benny and Little Piggy and the trials of having to clean up. The pictures are so good you can "see" what's going through Benny's head. Especially realistic is the look on Benny's face when he decides he just has to have a roll in a mudhole. Most parents can relate to trying to clean up after a little one and the struggle to clean a dirty lovey drug around by their child. Mama's response when she sees Benny returning and Little Piggy cleaned is upbeat and positive.

This is the story of the day-to-day emotional demands of impossible domestic situations. It is a story of female courage, where black comedy turns to disturbing pathos revolving around the rights of an indomitable woman.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A 5 star rated book!.......2003-01-13

Have the men had enough is one of the best books I have ever read...it made me laugh and cry and I felt it depicted the nightmare of dementia within a family briliantly. Margaret Forster is a very astute woman.

4 out of 5 stars Why not 5 stars?.......1999-12-30

This book is funny, touching and very realistically written - and well written too! Grandma in Had the Men had Enough reminds me very much of old people with senile dementia I knew in real life - all those extremely comical situations mixed with tragedy and insights into the personality the aged used to be. A must for anybody with old family members (who not?). It makes you look at old age in a new and (emotionally) better informed way, a more pensive way maybe. Given the subject the book is not at all heavy reading, it is rather light and straightforward. The only drawback to me lies in the construction of the novel (one star off for that is a lot, I know). The story is told by a mother (Grandma's daughter-in-law) and her daughter (Grandma's grandchild) alternatively. They give a kind of diary account of everything that happens with Grandma - but almost no word about the rest of their lives. A very lively way to tell a story, but it has also its unnatural aspects one perceives only after a while or after having finished the book. Nevertheless, Had the Men had Enough is very much worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars A great read.......1999-12-14

I thought that Have the Men had enough was a very funny and emotional book. It was well written . Although the book does not have the same action and compelling drama as some, it does keep you laughing and crying the whole way through.

2 out of 5 stars Would be a decent read if it was 100 pages shorter.......1999-01-09

To put it bluntly, the content of this book is too depressing. This is the story of an 80-something year old lady suffering senile dementia, and her family's struggle to provide loving care for her. I think the main problem with this book is that from the beginning, we can see exactly where the story is heading and how it will end, yet we are subjected to 200-odd pages in the middle which really need to be compelling and gripping but are not. The purpose of the middle of this book is to give us an insight into the old lady's family and the way they struggle to provide adequate care for her as her condition declines (too slowly for my liking). It becomes too repetitive as we see the same problems arising for the family over and over again, which may well be how it would happen in real life but it hardly makes for compelling reading. I just kept finding myself wishing the old lady would die already, to provide a new angle for the story. Now if the book was 100 pages shorter, I doubt I would have lost interest the way I did. But essentially it all comes down to the fact that the story is depressing and unenjoyable. I mean who really wants to read a book which makes an issue out of changing the underwear of a doubly-incontinent 80 year old woman. Not me.

Story is soooo cute and teaches a great lesson I have not read the book, but have heard the story..when my younger brother was approx. 5 years old (15 years ago) he had a copy of the house that had enough on video..not sure where my mother got it, but it was more like a book anyway, because it was not animated..it was just the pictures from the book, and then someone was narrating.

3 out of 5 stars Miss Piggy Rules.......2007-06-30

If you love Miss Piggy, you will enjoy this book, for some of her wit, charm and karate-chopping style come through loud and clear, emphasis on loud. While not as insightful or enjoyable as "Miss Piggy's Guide to Life," which seems more consistent with The Diva Herself, this is a very funny read. It won't do you any good to read with an eye for consistency--you simply can't reconcile Piggy's rules with her undying love for Kermit--but if you read with an eye for humour, you won't be disappointed.

I found a used copy of this book and wish they would put it back in print. It totally debunks that ridiculous book "The Rules". Don't take it too seriously, but read it for its sheer wit and whimsy. I don't think this book is sexist at all--it is supposed to be FUNNY! To everyone that reads it and takes it seriously...LIGHTEN UP! It was supposed to be written by Miss Piggy, for heaven's sake! This is a perfect book to give as a gift to girlfriends and share with boyfriends--most of the guys I know have found this book funny too. Classic.

5 out of 5 stars A candid and powerful book about overcoming adversity........2006-06-06

The author doesn't pull any punches. Raw, naked and frank discussion on the key moments of her life that involved overcoming tremendous adversity, pain and trauma inflicted upon her from those closest to her.

Her narrative paints a clear and vivid picture in the reader's mind; you'll find yourself laughing one minute and tearing the next. What's refreshing is she's layed out a very clear and easy-to-follow roadmap for overcoming many of today's common hurdles concerning weight, diet, excercise and more importantly--poor self image.

All in all, a powerful read...

      Book Description

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your anger? Do you find yourself responding to irritating situations with sarcasm or do those moments slowly build until you brutally convey what's on your mind? Do you internalize your anger and try to ignore it, or do you find it sneaking up on you in eruptive bursts? What triggers your anger? When you finally decide that you don't want to continue to live with your anger, are you then able to transcend it and use it as productive energy? Learning how to express anger constructively can be one of the hardest tasks for African-American women. They encounter the same issues as other women-family, friends, relationships, and sexism-but they also experience more difficult conflicts that are associated with being an African-American woman in our society. They are forced to confront others' stereotypes, disrespect, and discrimination, and their history of slavery continues to affect their present-day economic and social status. When Faye Childs and Noreen Palmer conducted a series of "Women and Anger" workshops in order to uncover what makes African-American women angry, they discovered entirely different anger patterns and methods of expression. This book is the culmination of their research and analysis and offers illuminating insight into how these women cope with anger, the serious and debilitating affects it can have upon their lives, and what they can do to express this anger effectively. "Going off" is a means of releasing pent-up anger, specific to African-American women, in an explosive outburst. Childs and Palmer found this type of angry behavior to be common among their workshop participants. But other women fell into the category of the "silent but strong" woman who represses her anger and puts up a strong front, stifling her feelings in the interest of maintaining harmony in her life. This woman suffers from the Invincible Black Woman syndrome, which can lead to low self-esteem, workaholic tendencies, depression, and ultimately serious health consequences. By tracing anger to its source, Childs and Palmer found that anger styles and traits are often formed in the childhood years. Frequently, a woman has a general anger that she lives with all the time with roots in her childhood or another past experience. Going Off identifies some of the most common anger triggers and the four anger styles: ( Authoritarian: difficulty seeing other's points of view or feelings ( High Profile: overly concerned with image, often displaying a strong front ( Pragmatic: a stable team player at risk of internalizing anger and going off after holding it in for long periods of time ( Intellectual: likes to be in control and feels threatened when criticizedGoing Off examines common scenarios that can lead to anger in friendships, romantic relationships, families, and the workplace. It suggests ways to diffuse your anger triggers by changing your perspective so that you can avoid the temptation to go off and can instead think about the situation rationally. It also helps you detect when you have fallen into the Invincible Black Woman syndrome, leading you on a path to recovery through gaining control over stressful situations, counseling, setting limits, and accepting support from others. This book is remarkable. Finally, there is a resource that can be used to help understand, explore, and empower Black women. It is truly a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Going Off, Timely Advice!.......2002-01-15

Going off is a must read. I'm glad that there is finally a book dedicated anger issues that are specific to Black women.
I found the anger styles to be most helpful, especially the
      solutions.

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointment!.......2001-07-29

This book wanders all over the place, has too many stories, and not enough concrete suggestions. There are definitely better books on the topic of women and anger.

2 out of 5 stars Great Idea but.............2001-07-02

I'm glad somebody chose to write a book on this topic. However, the solutions offered are too simplistic.
