Book Description

One of the most important African American leaders of the twentieth century and perhaps the most influential woman in the civil rights movement, Ella Baker (1903-1986) was an activist whose remarkable career spanned fifty years and touched thousands of lives.

A gifted grassroots organizer, Baker shunned the spotlight in favor of vital behind-the-scenes work that helped power the black freedom struggle. She was a national officer and key figure in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and a prime mover in the creation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Baker made a place for herself in predominantly male political circles that included W. E. B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King Jr., all the while maintaining relationships with a vibrant group of women, students, and activists both black and white.

In this deeply researched biography, Barbara Ransby chronicles Baker's long and rich political career as an organizer, an intellectual, and a teacher, from her early experiences in depression-era Harlem to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Ransby shows Baker to be a complex figure whose radical, democratic worldview, commitment to empowering the black poor, and emphasis on group-centered, grassroots leadership set her apart from most of her political contemporaries. Beyond documenting an extraordinary life, the book paints a vivid picture of the African American fight for justice and its intersections with other progressive struggles worldwide across the twentieth century.

This was a great book. Ella Baker was ahead of het time. This is a great read if you like the history of the civil right movement.Ms. Baker I hope to meet you in heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book about a phenomenal woman.......2005-12-09

Dr. Ransby provides a well-structured and insightful biography of one of the most important, yet least well-known, leaders of the civil rights movement in the United States. This book is strongly recommended for any student of modern U.S. history.

5 out of 5 stars a decisive American life--and a first rate biography.......2003-05-29

Ella Baker must be the most underrated figure in U.S. history. There are plenty of Presidents who have done less to shape their own times than Ella Baker. She decisively shaped two of the most important national civil rights organizations--the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference--and was the single most decisive figure in a third--the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Only Martin Luther King Jr. can be considered a rival in importance to the African American freedom movement, and yet most Americans have never even heard of Ella Baker. This exhaustively researched and well written biography should go a long way toward filling that gap.

This is a thoughful, analytical, and well-told story about a uniquely important American political life. It is a work of central importance in United States history and especially the history of the African American freedom movement. It is a cutting edge work of black women's history, too. I plan to buy a stack of them for Christmas presents, and to assign this book to my students for many years to come.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Striking visuals, poetic story to introduce Chinese calligraphy.......2007-02-25

This simple story distills Chinese pictographs into their most basic elements, showing how they evolved to their present forms. But it's also a delightful and poetic story about a girl who dreams her grandfather calls to her from across the mountains.

She sets out on foot, recording the scenery and people she encounters in her calligraphy, creating multiple layers of storytelling. I read each page carefully, going over the boldfaced English words (the original was in French) and matching them to the Chinese symbols to make sure I understood.

Louis writes on the back flap that she used linocuts, a type of woodcut, with dyed paper so she could "contrast the strong lines of the prints with the softness of the torn paper." It creates a striking visual effect, with the print marks simulating the strokes of a calligraphy brush, and the vivid colors of a Westernized palette bleeding elegantly into the paper beneath.

Chinese calligraphy will always be a subject that must be absorbed rather than scanned; make sure you have some quiet time for its meditative lessons.

Note: includes activities for creating pictograms with your kids.

        Book Description

Are ideas continually streaming through your mind that you just have to capture on paper? Do they sometimes visit you in the middle of the night, during a long drive in your car, when you're most relaxed, or even at the most inconvenient of times? If any of the above is true, you were born to write, and it is for persons such as you that You Were Born to Write was written. This life-changing book shows you how to tap in, at will, to that infinite source of inspiration and expression, and to release easily, fluently, and enjoyably whatever it is within you that seeks to be brought to life on paper. "My husband couldn't believe that within one week of finishing the Intensive Writer's Retreat with Tom Bird that I had finished my first book," says Debbie Kowalsky of Hollywood, Florida. You Were Born to Write, which is actually two books in one, shows you how to accomplish results such as these for yourself. In the first portion of the book, you will learn how your life and educational experiences have actually kept you from the natural act of expressing yourself meaningfully, passionately and with a purpose through your writing. As well, this portion of You Were Born to Write, outlines seventeen life-changing Writing Principles, to show you how to remove these inappropriate influences and then how to return to that most natural of all states. Then in the second and last portion of You Were Born to Write, you will be shown how to utilize what you have learned to write anything you want in record time and with the degree of depth, passion, and purpose that, before the reading of this book, you could have only dreamt of. Your achievements will include the writing of a book within thirty days or less. Like so many of us, Tom Bird felt drawn to write. However, even after employing the orthodox methods for writing as well as for getting published, he was met with mostly frustration and rejection. After realizing that the reason for his failure lay not with a lack of talent, commitment, or desire on his end, Tom decided to design his own strategy for releasing the author within himself and for getting his writing into print. This design eventually became known as The Tom Bird Method T. After employing his methods, Tom met with almost instant success, culminating in the sale of his first book at the age of twenty-six. Since then, Tom has published fifteen other books and toured the country, making more than over 3,000 lectures at over 100 different college and university campuses, sharing his methods with as many aspiring writers as possible. At present, Tom continues to teach and lecture, and lives in Sedona, Arizona, with Tammy Kelley, their daughter Skyla, and their two dogs, five cats, and two birds.

        5 out of 5 stars POSSIBILITIES.......2006-12-02

Complete your book in 30 days or less! Is that really possible?! It is not only possible but proven according to author and educator Tom Bird in his latest book. This phenomenon is backed by testimonials of Tom's students, or should I say published authors.
The Tom Bird method breaks the rules of traditional writing concepts taught to so many of us though academic institutions. This is one of the reasons that hinder our expression of ideas, according to Tom. In the first of portion of the book, the author reveals this & other conditioning that holds the writer back from putting their passion on paper. This section also provides Tom's 17 writing principles that are stated to be life changing.
The second section then shows how to utilize these concepts to write anything you want in record time, with more depth and purpose.
This book speaks to the heart of the writer, whether aspiring or published. The writing is direct, compassionate, and easy to follow. Tom is right there with you, from beginning to end, from choosing the correct writing instrument and mood to completion and beyond, starting that second book.
It is written informative and user friendly. Tom shares the concepts he developed that took him from frustration to publication in record time. He has published numerous books and articles. He has been teaching his methods at universities and schools nationally for 26 years.
If as the NY Times poll quoted is correct, that 81% of Americans have a book in them, this should be a bestseller.
Personally, I found this book so intriguing that I couldn't put it down, except to start writing the book inside of me!!

        5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-11-05

I highly recommend this book if you aspire to be a writer--or even if you don't. Tom Bird's approach speaks to the innate creative connection in all of us. The principles are concise and cut through all the traditional writing concepts. He shows you how to tap into your own unique expression and accomplish, in a relatively short time, what has taken some authors months and years to accomplish practicing the accepted linear processes. I enjoyed taking Tom's class and this book is a wonderful compact reminder of how much MORE FUN it is to write using his method.

        5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2006-11-04

You must have an author within you struggling to get out, or you would not be reading this review. With his seventeen writing principles Tom Bird destroys the myths of why you cannot write and tells you how you can write. He explains the origin as well as how to control the Logical Critical Mind. That is your ruthless internal judge who is sure that your writing is nothing more than trash which no one wants to read. Tom elaborates on how to write from your heart and why that is critical for a successful writer. He also demonstrates that you need not take years to write a book. With discipline and his techniques, it can be completed within months. Finally, Tom gives an exact procedure for the rewrite process. You write a second draft and that`s it; not five or six rewrites. Tom Bird has presented 3000 lectures to 50,000 students at over 110 campuses. I think he is the worlds greatest cheerleader and motivator for writers. I highly reccommend this book.

          Book Description

Do you have a story or a message that just keeps dogging you and just won't let you go? Every time that your gaze falls upon a bestseller list, do you wonder why your name is not on it? Are friends, family members, and/or colleagues continually commenting on how much they love to read your letters? Would publication of your work land you the professional praise or tenure that you seek? If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, "You were born to be published," says author Tom Bird, founder of The Tom Bird Method T, which offers, no matter what you write, a proven system for getting your writing published. Some of the central themes to be covered in this book include: . Seeing your book in print in as little as twenty days . Learning the secrets behind getting published that other authors don't want you to know . Getting paid for your book before it is even written . Receiving offers to get your book published or represented by a top literary agent in as little as a few hours . Discovering everything you need to know about protecting your work from being stolen. Tom Bird employed all of the orthodox methods for getting published and met with nothing but frustration and failure. So he finally decided to develop his own strategy for not only writing a book quickly, easily, and enjoyably, but getting whatever it is he wrote published, The Tom Bird Method T. Six weeks after doing so, at the age of twenty-six, Tom sold his first book to, at that time, the third largest publisher in the world, for an amount equivalent to three times his yearly salary as The Assistant Director of Publicity with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since then, Tom, who has gone onto publish fifteen other books and whose work has appeared in dozens of magazines, has shared his Eleven Laws through over 3,000 appearances at more than 100 top college and university campuses, and has helped thousands of writers in securing a publishing deal. He details in this book not only his own successes, but his methods for leading so many others to their literary dreams. As a result, you will find everything you need to know to publish whatever it is that you write. If you ever wanted to publish, for whatever reason, and/or felt that you were born to be published, this book is for you. Tom resides in Sedona, Arizona, with Tammy Kelly, their daughter Skyla, and their two dogs, five cats, and two birds. "I can't thank you enough for helping me fulfill my heart's deepest desire..."-Debra Blais, Author of Letting Your Heart Sing. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Put your passion into action!.......2006-12-19

Outstanding... the system presented in this book is simple enough for the unpublished writer to follow, motivating enough to follow it, and detailed enough to follow through, each step of the way. Tom Bird answers every reason for not getting published in this inspiring, common sense manual. He assumes we writers want to make a positive difference in the world, and that we need to make a living. Right on!

This book introduces the world of publishing in a step by step way. The author is well aware of how frightening this can be to a novice. He gives generously of his own positive attitude, and addresses each concern with practical strategies. The eleven "laws" that organize the book function more as a motivational "ladder" than as a useful list. The 90+ pages of examples, to do lists, and resources are worth the price of admission, alone.

If you are looking for a book to inspire and inform you, this is the perfect one. Forget lethargy, passivity, and inaction. Forget ruthless self-criticism! The success stories of new writers will renew your faith in your own unique contribution. From there, it is just a question of taking action. If you have a passion to be published, this book can help you to get it done.

3 out of 5 stars Some golden nuggets among the sludge.......2006-11-24

Shouldn't someone who teaches writing and publishing have an editor whose spell check program at the very least deletes the "a" from "heafty" before putting the book into print? This type of pervasive sloppiness, along with a little too much oddly placed self-promotion, distracted me from the main message, which is how to get a book or magazine article published.

On the plus side, it does appear that anyone can get published, with perseverence and time and effort, especially if one happens to be buddies with a famous person in need of a ghostwriter. There are some good references to valuable resources, including one web site that is misspelled once but spelled correctly another time. And the book has a very positive, encouraging tone, which may provide stuck would-be published authors with the impetus to get those hundred letters to literary agents out sooner rather than later.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Bird Nails It Again.......2006-11-11

Tom Bird gives you the nuts & bolts of publishing in an easy-to-learn intuitive manner. He breaks down publishing your book, whether fiction or non-fiction, into simple chunks of information.

Just like in "Write From God" or "Releasing Your Artist Within," with Tom's fresh approach and deep industry knowledge, he distills the essence of publishing into a handful of simple guidelines. These guidelines or laws range from, "Always write what you feel most strongly about..." to "If you are so led, collaborating on a book with a well-known source or celebrity is a great way to get published fast."

Tom provides substantial supporting information such as a checklist for self-publishing, sample query letters and sample book proposals.

"You Were Born To Be Published..." is a great tool for you to become the published writer that you want to be!

5 out of 5 stars You Were Born to be Published by Tom Bird.......2006-11-07

So, you've just completed your first opus, and you're pretty proud of yourself. After all, this could just be the Great American Novel. Little do you know that, even though your manuscript is finished, your work has only just begun! There are miles to go between "The End" and that Oprah interview.

You're a babe in the woods. You are about to enter the world of agents, queries, proposals, copyrights, contracts, publicity and promotion, and you are a deer in headlights. You haven't a clue about the many procedures, options and decisions that lie ahead of you, not to mention the many landmines in your way that will derail your progress to the top of the best-seller list.

Enter Tom Bird with his roadmap to getting there. He has been down this road, through the trials and tribulations and, finally, with his own method, to the successes of book publishing.

This book is a gem, a "must have" for any first-time writer. It is not only comprehensive, but concise, succinct, clear, and very easy to use. It is well organized, and loaded with examples of query letters and proposal submissions to help jump start the process of getting published.

You Were Born to be...Published will be an indispensable reference book on any writer's shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Reality Orientation on Getting Published.......2006-10-29

Tom Bird's You Were Born to be Published

As a published author with my share of rejection slips, I find Tom Bird's book a fresh breeze. That's because it's the no-bull guide to getting published. His eleven laws frequently conflict with the conventional wisdom. He tells you don't even try to go to a traditional publisher without an agent. Don't send manuscripts until the agent likes your query letter. Make your letter one page. Don't expect the publisher to spend a fortune on marketing your book unless you're a famous author. Realize that print-on-demand is the way of the future (or even the present). Face the costs of writing and publishing realistically. Write what you know and are passionate about. And on and on.
He also points out the multidimensional roles you have to take if you're going to self-publish--writer, editor, publisher, marketer, publicity agent, business manager. You have to be a literary schizophrenic!
Stuff I know from hard experience is right!
I have read a number of authors on getting published, but none has the ring of reality that Tom Bird does.

          5 out of 5 stars Pelican Pete's A Collectible.......2007-03-26

In our throw-away world, books come and books go. But there are those worth keeping. The Pelican Pete books fall into that category. We've gifted each of our grandchildren with this series, and they plan to pass them down to their own children. Stunning in their originality and beauty, it is sheer joy to peruse these pages.

5 out of 5 stars Pelican Pete Series Very Positive for Children.......2007-01-29

I have given all the Pelican Pete books to my grandchildren and those of my friends. In every case both the parents and the children were delighted with the books. The children found them colorful, easy to read and fun. The parents tell me they really appreciate how well researched the information is and the extensive list of sources for other information on nature.

No wonder these books have won so many awards! You can't miss when you give these books to children you care about. They will be both entertained and educated by every book in this great series.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book for kids!!.......2006-01-01

I homeschool my two kids - ages 2 and 4 and we have TONS of books. We read all of the time. They LOVE this series of books! They re-enact the stories, over and over. They're written in rhyme, which is entertaining and educational for them as well. The stories really hold their attention and the pictures that accompany each story are beautiful . Finally, don't miss all of the interesting facts at the end of each book! HIGHLY recommended series!!

I am a college student attending Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. For the last three months, I have been working as a public relations intern for Frances and Hugh Keiser, the author and illustrator of this book. In that short amount of time, I have fallen in love with Pelican Pete. I find these stories both adorable and educational. Working with Hugh and Frances has been an experience I won't forget, and as a previously declared Elementary Education major, I would recommend these books to be used in any school. All the facts in the books are checked by scientific professionals for accuracy. You really can't go wrong with this series, children of all ages should enjoy it.

I have been working extensively with Frances and Hugh in helping them prep their newest book for it's release, and the new book "Annie the River Otter" is a worthy addition to the series.

David Brendan Hopes, a literary scholar and painter based in North Carolina, does not value the natural world for its beauty, beautiful though it surely is. He prizes it instead, he writes in this engaging book of essays, "because it bears witness," because understanding its operating principles affords us humans something approaching wisdom.

Hopes writes of having learned a few hard lessons on his travels into the wild. One alternately humorous and sobering essay, for instance, describes his encounter on a mountain trail with a grumpy mother bear, who left him with an eight-inch-long laceration as a souvenir. ("She had meant nothing by it," Hopes writes, forgivingly. "She used my leg to steady herself as she would have the limb of a tree, and with the same consequence.") He also ponders the play of improbability and self-discovery that nature seems to delight in, writing of an encounter along the Gulf of Mexico with the exceedingly rare, possibly extinct Eskimo curlew, a bird that wasn't supposed to be there at that time of year. His sighting may have been mistaken, Hopes suggests. But, he writes, he may also have seen a ghost, a creature that had "pulled a vanishing act so complete and so subtle we cannot yet process the reality of it."

Quiet and humane, Hopes's essays speak to the pleasures and occasional pains of a life spent in nature, bearing witness along with the world. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

In this book, David Brendan Hopes fuses the spiritual and the mystical with the natural, invoking the possibility of grace. Writing about hiking, camping, and particularly about birds, he invites readers to mark the moment when flower, bird, and mountain announce themselves to the soul, bristling and wondrous.

                5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful.......2000-12-09

David Hopes, in this sensitive and breathtaking book, reaches the highest goal of any good writing--to touch the spirit and raise it up. These essays are about nature, yes, and about its beauty--but more than that: they are about the interfaces between the human world and the natural world. Or, more even than that, they are about how the human and natural world are one, fabric of the same universe. The nature that is our nature. And, it is this knowledge that has the power to save us. I urge you to read this book and treasure it-- for its beauty and its spiritual searching and its wisdom.

                5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking........1999-09-29

There are no words to express the magnificence of Mr. Hopes' prose. I came upon a copy accidently and have read and enjoyed it more than any other book in my vast library. This is a book that truly should be re-issued. David Brendan Hopes is a literary gift to be treasured.
