Book Description
Is President Chavez the new Fidel Castro? Is Venezuela the new Cuba? Elected by an overwhelming popular mandate in 1998, Hugo Chavez is now one of Latin America's most controversial political figures. In this exclusive interview, Chavez expresses a fiercely nationalist vision for Venezuela and a commitment to a united Latin America. He discusses the significance of the military coup against his government in April 2002, Venezuela's new democratic constitution and assesses his relations with the United States and Cuba.
"Soviet power has collapsed but that does not mean that neoliberal capitalism has to be the model followed by the peoples of the West⦠This world cannot be run by a universal police force that seeks to control everything." -President Hugo Chavez
Customer Reviews:
Have you been in Venezuela ?.......2007-07-08
I just completed a ten day travel on one of the richest yet poorest countries of the World. I am from Ecuador, wich is supposed to be a country with more poverty than Venezuela. But what I saw in Venezuela left me astonished, Slums an Povertty everywhere, Insecurty and violence are in every street. Venezuelans that believe in Chavez have lost touch with reality, they regurgitate Chavez ideology as if it where their own. They believe that one they day Chavez will bring dignity into their lives by providing a decent home and a decent job. After 8 years of government none or exeptionally very few have received Chaves promises,
Chavez only interest is not on the people but in all the power he can get to control Venezula. One big expample of how awfull and injuste is the "Revolucion Bolivariana". Is the Copa America that is being held in that country. Venezuela spent one billion dollars to build new stadiums with the only purpose to impress foreign media. How it is possible that a country will prefer its propaganda insted of its citizens. Venezuelans dont like soccer, and those huge stadiums will be used only once and will become forgotten beasts. Venezuela has become an awfull, extremely expensive and insecure place to visit.
Informative, Crucial Reading On The Subject........2007-06-24
Venezuela's Hugo Chavez has become quite a well-known figure in America if not the world. Most of the attention is due to his leftist politics and revolutionary movement, the Bolivarian Revolution, not to mention his close friendship with Cuba's Fidel Castro. But what we rarely get, as is the case with most controversial figures, is the man's words. In the U.S. most people have only seen the video of Chavez calling Bush "the Devil" over and over again. Here we get Chavez's actual ideas and personal accounts of his life and formation as a revolutionary leader. "Chavez: Venezuela & The New Latin America" is crucial reading for those who want to read the man's own words and learn about his life and vision. The interview on which the book is based was conducted by Aleida Guevara, daughter of legendary revolutionary Che Guevara, she dwelves deep into Chavez's background and current state not just as a political figure but as a father as well. Chavez discusses in candid detail his family, his close relationship with his daughters and his growing up poor with a loving grandmother. Some of the most fascinating passages deal with Chavez's years in the Venezuelan army where he witnesses brutal repression by the government of farmers and students considered "subversive." In brilliant detail Chavez describes the Bolivarian project and it's achievements in education, he also talks about the continuing fight against the oligarchy in his country and there riveting accounts of the infamous 2002 U.S.-backed coup in Venezuela which provoked a public outcry that brought Chavez back to power. The continuing relationship between Venezuela and Cuba is discussed with some interesting moments where Chavez reveals even health advice that Fidel Castro gives him. "Chavez" is worth reading to get the point of view from the man himelf, it flows smoothly humor, charm and always a driving need to inform.
A Great Leader at the Right Time.......2006-06-10
While the U.S. has always been a Republic and a democracy on paper, it has never been either in practice. A major feature of the U.S. system is that its White citizens have been led to believe they live in a republic and a democracy while the nonwhite population is reminded in no uncertain terms, that they were never part of the original deal. The U.S. is actually run by a banking based oligarchy, which rules a population kept perpetually divided along racial, and or ideological lines. A divided population is easier to control, thus Americans are encouraged to remain divided, for this reason. Venezuela like most of the former 'slaveowning' nations of the Americas, has long been run by an oligarchy like that of the U.S. Since the systems are the same, the same racial and ideological divisions used to govern the U.S., have been used to govern Venezuela. In time the oligarchy based in the U.S. has come to dominate the entire hemisphere.
Enter Hugo Chavez: an man of non-white ancestry, who dares to challenge the centuries old system of oligarchical rule. Not only has he energized those traditionally at the bottom of the socio-economic and racial pecking order, he is uniting all Venezuelans in ways which transcend the old racial and ideological divisions. This is a great development for people interested in freeing themselves from the iron grip of the banker oligarchy. For those who serve them however, this is a dangerous development, hence the vitriolic diatribes against him in the U.S. and Venezuelan mainstream media. In this book Chavez speaks in his own words, and gives ample coverage of his mission to elevate those who've been oppressed and exploited by the oligarchy, into the full benefits of citizenship and self determination. The unsuccessful coup attempt against Chavez has good and bad aspects. A good aspect because the forces of oligarchial slavery were defeated. A bad aspect because the oligarchy is sure to resort to more diabolical measures in an attempt to crush the blossoming of real democracy Chavez has wrought.
A threat to corporate tyranny.......2006-03-22
I was encouraged to buy this book by the hysterical shrieking of the negative reviews. The Castro-bashing is always amusing in the context of the United States' history of butchering the people of Latin America. Say what you want about Castro or Chavez, their administations are challenging neoliberal policies that have caused untold suffering throughout the world and are currently bringing corporatist class war machinations to the USA.
While these interviews with Chavez reveal what an interesting and articulate person he is, it's healthy to realize that Hugo is not a "hero" (as another reviewer asserted). The world doesn't need heroes, it needs the development of grassroots organizations and engaged people to figure out things for themselves. Fortunately, there are civic organizations like "Global Exchange" that take people to Venezuela to see some of the vision Chavez speaks of being put into action. Many people throughout Venezuela and beyond are thankful for that country's progressive efforts (including providing cheap oil to impoverished communities in the US), and resented the US-backed coup attempt. Venezuela's plutocracy was hoping to regain power, but an incredible show of popular support kept Chavez in office. There's actually a documentary that captured that event on film called "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." I don't believe it's on DVD yet, but you can learn more at www.chavezthefilm.com.
It's hard to say where Venezuela's social change efforts will lead. A great deal of the future success or failure depends on what actions are taken by the warlords of Imperial America, who no doubt already have Special Ops forces, CIA agents, and "Economic Hit Men" skulking all around Caracas. Venezuela's future also will be affected by the citizens of the US and other nations, and whether or not they choose to act in solidarity. This book and groups like Global Exchange will provide concerned people with the sort of insight and opportunities they need to contribute to democratic change in Venezuela and the United States.
"There is at the head of this great continent a very powerful country, very rich, very war-like, and capable of anything. The United States seems destined to plague and torment the continent in the name of freedom."
-Simon Bolivar (1783-1830)
Beware of Lies!!!.......2005-12-29
If you believe anything Chavez says you might as well take a look at how the country is doing. Venzuela is one of the richest countries in the world and makes tons of money from oil exports, yet, about 90% of the country is in poverty. Several millions (of only 23) are unemployed. Over 150 people die every weekend due to unorganized crime and roberies and the senate is debating a law which states that if you steal because you need the goods to feed your family, it is legal. These are only a few of the facts that you surely don't see in Chavez's book.
I suggest that if you really think Chavez is doing well because you believed every lie he says in this book, you do some research on the situation of people in Venezuela. It is nice to say he brought 50 or 100 Cuban doctors and went into 5 slums to teach kids, but where do the billions of dollars of oil exports go, because they surely do not go to the people.
I suggest some background research before reading this book and if you want to read a true story, don't even buy it.

Cozy Relationship Novel Rich With English Charm.......2007-01-14
Fans of Marcia Willett will want to continue the story of the extended English family begun in FIRST FRIENDS. This fourth installment introduces a whole new cast of characters while bringing forth remembered characters from her previous novels. Three couples, each at a different point in their marriage, are the focus of this compelling story set on the moors of Dartmoor.
Phyllida and Alistair Makepeace are a naval couple dealing with the separation such a life includes as well as infidelity and a deep personal tragedy.
Claudia and Jeff Maynard seem like the perfect couple outwardly, but in their private lives there is misery and incompatibility. How little they know of each other reaches a shattering climax and the truth leads them to re-examine and re-direct their lives.
Clemmie and Quentin Halliwell are an elderly couple approaching end-of-life decisions and dealing with their own past which held its share of recriminations. Quentin happens to be godfather to Oliver Wivenhoe, a favorite of readers of Willett's past novels, and it is Oliver, now graduated from college, who enters the story and interacts with all three of these couples.
Also hovering over the story is the dipper, a small diving bird, the sight of which has almost magical powers over the characters. If you enjoy relationship dramas, the charm of English country life, and characters so fully developed you can take them to your heart, then you will truly enjoy this amazing tale.

Definitely a candidate for the all-time silliest of Dr. Seuss's books, What Was I Scared Of? is the extremely unscary tale of... a pair of empty pants! Just try to keep from giggling when reading this story aloud--we dare you. For starters, practice with "And there I was! / Caught in the Snide! / And in that dreadful place, / those spooky, empty pants and I were standing face to face!" The small size and sturdy cover make this tiny tome just right for tucking away in a bag for traveling or an evening out. Perfect for an overnight camping trip, this book puts fears in their proper perspective, and will have everyone laughing out loud. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
What's a pair of empty green trousers doing standing by itself in the woods? Or riding a bike in Grin-itch? Or fishing on Roover River? The narrator certainly doesn't want to find out but wherever he goes, he's haunted by the spooky empty pants. Finally, when the two find themselves hiding from each other in a Snide bush the terrified narrator realizes, "I was just as strange to him as he was strange to me." This little Seussian gem, plucked from the back of The Sneetches and Other Stories, shines on it own as it delivers a timeless message about fear and tolerance.

MY FAVORITE SEUSS STORY.......2007-10-08
I traded a huge purple stuffed dog, for Sneetches and Other Stories when I was 5 or 6. THIS story is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! Imagine my joy to see it published on it's own. I am 43 now, and highly recommend this little book.
Great Story!.......2007-10-02
My kids and I love this story. It is a little scary and can be read with a lot of drama. It is also great because you can use it as a teaching tool when your kids are scared of the unknown.
My recommendation though is to spend the extra couple bucks and pick up the book (Sneetches and Other Stories) in which this story was published. The other stories are just as fun!
The dark blue pages entice the reader & listener to the next page . . ........2007-06-12
Perhaps my top pick for the bedtime stories.
The eyes of a child grow large, their tiny heartbeats quicken and their grip tightens upon your person. Questions arise every other page from their interested brains as to "What do you think is gonna happen next?". Until the last few pages when all is revealed what's green and has been walking in the dark, the cutest of giggles begin.
Upon leaving the childs room, lights go out and the exchange of good nights are given; even thou it is but a humourous book, none-the-less do the tiny folk remind you to leave the closet light on when exiting the room.
I think those are the best critiques in the world.
A Suessage walk in the forest dark.

Scary/Silly.......2004-02-25
This book was always one of my favorites because me and my grandpa would read it together all the time and in the beginning I would always be scared but then at the end I would be laughing so hard!
The best Seuss book of all!.......2003-08-29
This is the best Seuss book of all because of they way it sneaks up on the reader (and listener). It was read to me many times 35+ years ago and I loved it then and I love it now after reading it for years to our children. I find it terrifically effective because it is creepy and scary when all you see is the pants with nobody in them, and then it turns out that everything can be scary until one knows what it is and looks at the situation from the other's point of view. The colors and classic illustrations set the spooky mood and then make one laugh and feel so silly!

A great book about a rare subject.......2001-05-02
This book is not widely available but it is a real gem, especially from this first printing! It's great that Amazon is now carrying it. I was lucky enough to get a personal, signed copy from the author and really enjoyed it. It is well written and thoroughly researched. Even if you're not from San Diego, you will enjoy this story about the making, unmaking, and revival of a historic roller coaster.
So many authors overlook good topics right near their homes, but this author found a great story and stuck with it. I hope he rolls out another project soon.
Book Description
"There are times when a bear has to be alone with himself, to think his own thoughts and sing his own songs." Whether watching the wind, smelling the rain, or talking to a river, Bear is happy to take time alone to look around and contemplate his world--a wonderful message in this age of busyness. Geoffrey Hayes illustrates this gentle ode to solitude in jewel-like color and intricate detail.

At 3 years of age, my son learned to read.......2006-12-13
One of my three kidlets learned to read at age 3, and the book that he learned to read first was "Bear by Himself." He had a great pre-school teacher named Mary. One day I came home from work, and he had this book and was reading from memory, or so I thought. I began to listen carefully, and then after he read the book, I pointed out some words to him at random, and by gosh, he was reading! And, he understood what he was reading and what the story was about. I thank Mary for her patience in teaching him, wherever she may be. She was wonderful! My son is a voracious reader, and continues to read, just like all of us in our family. I am ordering him a copy for Christmas!
This book is SO CUTE!.......1999-11-12
When I was little, my parents (mostly my dad) read this to me all the time and I loved it! It is so sweet and I think every partent should read it to their kids!
A charming and endearing book.......1999-10-27
I used to read this book to my children when they were very small. It was a reminder to them that everyone needs quiet time. I was hearbroken when it got lost and searched everywhere for it. Now that it is back in print I can read it to my youngest! I would love to get a copy of the original as the illustrations were so peaceful and beautiful.
sweet book, wonderful illustrations.......1998-12-06
I love this book. The text is tender and thoughtful (although perhaps a tad on the precious side), the illustrations are sweet but not overly so--Bear comes across as an energetic little guy, even though he is alone. But I do have two suggestions, don't know if anyone from the publisher will read this to hear them! One is to publish it as a board book; the hardback version might not last long with the intended age group. And the other is to publish a "Bear by Herself" version, with a little girl bear, sort of like the two versions of "Once Upon a Potty." ;-) I'm not rabid about being politically correct, but this seems to me to be a book that particularly lends itself to personalization; I think young kids will really identify with Bear.
Perfect book to teach children to appreciate the quiet times.......1998-09-19
I went to my local book store and they couldn't find "Bear by Himself". I bought the original when my son was 3 years old and misplaced it. He's been asking about it recently and wished he had it. It warmed MY heart to know it still had a special place in HIS. I was so happy to see I could obtain another copy of it through amazon.com, but feel I may be disappointed as the more recent version has different illustrations as one reader shared. I still plan to order one, though, because the text is unchanged. The original illustrations were so beautiful and calming...I remember it so vividly. My son is now 12 and still loves being alone at times. He really relates to the bear. It was great to share the same feelings with all of you! I'm willing to spend a bit more for the book to get the original. If any of you know how I can obtain one, please email me. Thanks so much.

NOT THE GREAT COFFEE TABLE BOOK!.......2007-07-05
NOT 500 pages and if I had paused to read the item description properly I wouldn't have bought this book! Way too good a price to be true, it is not another edition of the wonderful Cousteau-forwarded book, but a perfectly respectable DK full-color children's book with many very nice color photos. Probably very worth $7.99 and I was just far too greedy to read the fine print.
Best of its Kind.......2007-06-27
I'm an avid reader of books about the ocean. I've read dozens on the subject, from Jacques Cousteau to Rachel Carson and Sylvia Earle. This latest contribution by Robert Dinwiddie is so full of information that it can be enjoyed on many levels. Oceanography, Biology, Chemistry, Geology-it's all there. Despite the beautiful photos, this is not just another ocean picture book, but a virtual encyclopedia on the subject of the ocean. It is thorough, yet concise, scientifically advanced, yet full of wonder. The author has done a wonderful job with this complex and important subject. This book is an excellent choice, whether you're considering a career in ocean science, or just love reading and learning about the ocean.
A great, captivating book.......2007-05-24
A complete overview of the ocean: physical features, marine life, fishing, exploration - this book covers it all. Great photography and short pieces of information on many of the ocean features will engage even the casual browser of this book.
Wonderful graphics!.......2007-05-17
I recently sent this book to my younger sister who has inspirations of becoming an oceanographer. The book is so colorful and educational I think I want to become an oceanographer now!
more than just pictures.......2007-05-07
This book not only has beautiful photography but a wealth of information. Ocean is a beautiful encyclopedia.
