Book Description

One issue could lead to a disastrous war between the United States and China in the next five to ten years: Taiwan. A growing number of Taiwanese want independence for their island and regard mainland China as an alien nation. Mainland Chinese believe Taiwan was stolen from China more than a century ago, and their patience about getting it back is wearing thin. Washington officially endorses a one China policy but also sells arms to Taiwan and maintains an implicit pledge to defend it from attack. That vague, muddled policy invites miscalculation by both Taiwan and China. The three parties are on a collision course, and unless something dramatic changes, an armed conflict is virtually inevitable within a decade. In this book, Carpenter warns the reader what the U.S. must doquicklyto avoid being dragged into war.

1 out of 5 stars Oh the irony.......2007-09-27

The cover picture is of the flag of a country. No, not Taiwan. China. Republic of China. You know, the country that currently administers the island Taiwan. Interesting premise, this book has. Taiwan declaring independence. From the Republic of China. (Can California now declare independence from the US? I think not.) What's the flag of the Republic of China doing on the page of this book? It makes as much sense as a book arguing for Californian independence having a cover of the flag of Mexico...

3 out of 5 stars More like "America's Coming Arms Race: A Collision of Economics".......2007-06-24

"If there was one overall theme in Ted Galen Carpenter's book, "America's Coming War with China: A Collision Course over Taiwan," it would have to be: why America will NOT go to war with China.
While Taiwan has long been a thorn in the side of the People's Republic of China, the reluctance of China to take the island by force since the late 1950s reveals the danger of such action to China's own enviable economic stability.
Carpenter reveals how the PRC simply cannot force reunification militarily, at least not anytime soon. For the same reason the U.S. won't annex or "liberate" Cuba, China simply cannot risk the international economic damage that would follow an invasion attempt of Taiwan, not to mention the additional unforeseen political and military fallout.
Carpenter's analysis is insightful, and at times brilliant, and there's little doubt that the need to clarify the U.S. position on Taiwan begs immediate consideration regardless of what an anathema it could be to the PRC. Taiwan as well should not be put in a position to leverage brinksmanship between the U.S. and the PRC.
If any threat exists from the PRC, I would suggest that it would arise from the same circumstances that prompted Japan to assert aggression before and during WWII: limited or depleting natural resources. Any Chinese aggression provoked by the pressure of limited resources would prompt reunification of Taiwan as an extension of such aggression.
As one of our biggest customers of military hardware, often rivaling Israel, Taiwan is a valuable democratic comrade (to borrow the Communist term) in the volatile western Pacific region.
Fortunately outright conflict in the region would be a lose-lose situation for all parties involved both militarily and economically likely threatening social stability worldwide.
Well written and both topical and informative if you have even a fleeting interest in Sino-Taiwanese cross-strait relations.

3 out of 5 stars No Real Taiwan Expert.......2007-03-17

American is full of intelligent experts on China, but it doesn't seem to have a lot of experts on Taiwan. Taiwan might not be as big or as important as China to the US, but it is an important elements in the situation. Without the understanding, there will be no accurate conclusion and no good proposition of solutions.

I think Taiwan should be allowed to defend itself, if it is under attack. I agree with the author on that the US should really reconsider its policy, and sell Taiwan weapons other than defensive ones when necessary because there is no way Taiwan can defend itself properly just by taking a pounding. Defensive weapon are usually more expensive, and it can't help detering China's attack, China will just keep attacking. If Taiwan has the ability to defend itself then the US wouldn't need to worry too much if it will get drag into the war.

I disagree with the previous poster on encouraging Taiwan to reunify with China. That will be a big strategic mistake in the long run I believe. The US should clearly state that "we do not support indepedence, and we do not support reunification." This way it makes the US neutral on this matter. (which it should be, because ideally the fate of Taiwan should rest on the hand of Taiwanese, not the US or China, since they are the one that live and die on it.)

Despite the US discouragement of indepedence and China's threat and coercion, Taiwan's recent poll seems to show that the percentage of people who support independence is actually growing over past few years. Perhaps the US should wait a bit more instead of just rushing in and push Taiwan to China's embrace.

4 out of 5 stars CHINA: AMERICA'S NEXT MILITARY OPPONENT?.......2006-12-03

Is it inevitable the United States will go to war with China to determine who controls the destiny of Asia for the 21st Century and beyond? Many Americans are expecting such a conflict to occur and are attempting to warn us of that impending cataclysm with a nation that has four times more citizens than us.

Ted Galen Carpenter is a vice-president for defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute think tank in Washington, D.C. and has written a new book called `America's Coming War with China.' He argues in the provocative tome that America's continued friendship with Taiwan could be the catalyst for eventual war with the mainland and bring disastrous consequences to all parties involved.

He opens the book with a fictionalized scenario taking place in 2013 in which Taiwan declares itself an independent nation and wishes to separate itself from China's influence. Beijing obviously opposes such a brazen move and begins mobilizing its military to invade the island to crush its perceived rebellion by those living there.

The fictional American president sends two naval carrier groups to that part of the Pacific Ocean to force China to back down from its hostile intent against their island cousins. But, predictably, a shooting war between the two superpowers breaks out with a heavy loss of life on both sides.

Thousands are killed in a few weeks of battles before an uneasy truce is reached. But relations between America and China remain distant for decades to come in this fictional narrative by Carpenter.

Will such a conflict ever take place between these two giants? It possibly can, but would probably have a quick resolution considering the destructive nature of today's modern weaponry. It's obvious we would never invade China if a shooting war develops and they could never do the same to us, based on current military logistics. However, one must presume that if conflict erupts between the two sides it would be solely an air and naval war because we won't have the time to raise the millions of soldiers needed for a land invasion.

If the tensions are not reduced within a few days of those initial skirmishes then a limited nuclear weapons exchange between both countries would most likely occur, with each side targeting the major cities of their opponent for destruction in a game of wills to see who would give up first.

Where would such a conflagration between China and us leave Taiwan? Probably destroyed, either by invasion by thousands of mainland troops or devastation by weapons of mass destruction coming from the east as punishment for their attempted breakaway.

What would be the aftermath of such a war? Complete economic ruin on both sides for a minimum of twenty-five years and a worldwide depression for at least a decade while the two nations try to rebuild the infrastructure and re-populate their citizenry. So can we avoid it? Carpenter asks very serious questions that our government must debate at some point in the next ten years.

CAN MULTINATIONALS FLOURISH IN ASIA WHEN ASIANS
ARE IN SEARCH OF A NATIONAL IDEOLOGY ??

In the Asian countries, the recent intervention of the state in economic matters has been locally conceived in the interest of better-balanced economic development and the protection of the general welfare.

Elsewhere we have also seen signs of `state interventions' (Russia), in response to economic expedient when the State realized that large private enterprises were better be put back in check.
State intervention is taking the form of rescue efforts ... but how long can it last in this form??

In its initial stage when the term ` Global Economy ` got energetic momentum, great economic explosion was witnessed in Asia, thanks to substantial investment and government inspired prodding.

NOW, it is said that such remarkable economic development has not been flawless, and the challenge is one to simply make it auditable " and
technically measurable based on accepted international standards". When many banks (notably Japanese) were surprisingly beset - in the late nineties - by the biggest amounts of bad debts ever encountered and many more had their names associated with the twentieth century's worst financial scandals. ...

Consequently, what has started as State-Intervention, is gradually converging into State-Control.
State control to the detriment of the elite executives in the private sector who allegedly triggered embarrassing `global' investigations on how they managed their businesses...

State Control is growing as a result of the perpetual lambasting of the IMF and G7 for accelerated streamlining before any effective and wider rescue aids are put in place.
Bureaucrats argue that State Control is prompted by the inability of many private enterprises (like banking.exposed when did too much too quickly) to maintain the desired balanced pace and sustain the recent trimming of the inflow of foreign capital, and they know damn well how easy to use economic instruments to gain more political powers.
Two, often overlapping, positions.

Undoubtedly, the worldwide economic crises of the early 1930's and its depressive effect upon world-trade, confirmed in the minds of the leaders their already strong inclination toward a policy of economy that is self-motivated.
The world wide economic depression of the 1930's served to establish, on a global basis, the failure of private enterprise and the absence of any public opinion to oppose the move towards state control. Still lives on in the memory of many leaders in Asia and East Europe, the then prevailing inadequacy of international commercial law and its enforcement, the shortage of capital and the necessity to channel that which was available into projects of highest social return (not necessarily equated with high financial profits especially in the short term) --- and the apparently impressive examples of state economic control in Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Soviet Russia. --

WWII however demonstrated to the Asians in particular the practical drive of their self-motivated economy towards one of international economic cooperation (from urbanization to industrialization on a larger scale with a population that was remarkably mobile).

But, 25-30 years after WWII, when the wounded tiger recovered and developed sharp teeth and claws, what started as international economic cooperation, turned into sharp competition based on innovation at home (not on copying anymore).

During this period we failed to understand why the Asian economy could have chosen to work so closely and for so long, with the rest of the world, without giving any dire pre- warning. (Perhaps the cold-war was making everyone busy on hottest priorities)....... from hereon the story is indeed very long and , at times, the annals demonstrate high level back scratching between the G7 key players , how opposition leaders were becoming bitterly critical of G7 for bailing their rivals out economically when they had seemed to be teetering precariously on the brink of political collapse .

If we bear in mind how IMF/G7 decisions are made and the relative degree of their power vis-à-vis their domestic vital interests, can we really appreciate why some key players in Asia are casting doubt on the efficiency of liberal political and economic institutions.

To cut it short:
If Asia remain unable to understand WHY the latest recommendations were offered by G7 and IMF (in support of Global Economy although very short of being equivalent to the Marshall Plan), and if such recommendations do not translate words into deeds, or take too much time to yield stability in Asia's economics and put recession in check, by this time State Control will become something very much akin to an ideology in the minds of many - if one defined the term as a specific, social , economic , or political principle or program - to which people cling obstinately for emotional and symbolic reasons .. .

The level of expectation of the people from global economy got too far out of line with what global economy could equitably offer ...... It is like a car driver signalling right but turning left ...-
Unemployment!! In countries where this term has always been anathema to their culture and beliefs!! - With its stresses and strains. There is now embryonic ideological dynamism about Asia that may be hard to contain in the long run. Tears are being shed in nostalgic memory of the Cold War era.
And this is gradually interrupting the taming of the Asian Tiger, be it Japan, Korea, or even China.

Book Description

The tragedy of extinction is explained through the dramatic story of a legendary bird, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and of those who tried to possess it, paint it, shoot it, sell it, and, in a last-ditch effort, save it. A powerful saga that sweeps through two hundred years of history, it introduces artists like John James Audubon, bird collectors like William Brewster, and finally a new breed of scientist in Cornell's Arthur A. "Doc" Allen and his young ornithology student, James Tanner, whose quest to save the Ivory-bill culminates in one of the first great conservation showdowns in U.S. history, an early round in what is now a worldwide effort to save species. As hope for the Ivory-bill fades in the United States, the bird is last spotted in Cuba in 1987, and Cuban scientists join in the race to save it.

All this, plus Mr. Hoose's wonderful story-telling skills, comes together to give us what David Allen Sibley, author of The Sibley Guide to Birds calls "the most thorough and readable account to date of the personalities, fashions, economics, and politics that combined to bring about the demise of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker."

5 out of 5 stars Lord God, what a book!.......2006-04-01

At the risk of sounding blasphemous let me simply say "Lord God, what a book!" This book belongs on your MUST READ list!

This is a perfect example of how nonfiction should be written. Every school and public library should have a copy of this book. It is a valuable addition to the study of man, nature, and the environment.

Phillip Hoose's wonderful book captures the reader's attention and doesn't let it go till the very end of a beautifully written account of one of the most magnificent birds ever to grace this land. The cover of the book, not to mention the title, immediately attracts attention and after reading it the reader clearly understands why this bird was referred to as the Lord God Bird.

Hoose introduces us to collectors like Brewster and Wayne who helped lead to the bird's demise. There are the corporate villains in the form of the Chicago Mill and Lumber Company and the Singer Manufacturing Company who could have saved the last real refuge of the Lord God Bird but who chose profit over conservation when the Singer Tract was not spared from the woodcutter's ax. There are heroes to this story. You will meet Jim Tanner, "Doc" Allen, and J. J. Kuhn who worked tirelessly to save the species. Having read this book I felt that Jim Tanner was definitely someone I wished that I had known personally.

Educators will find countless lessons on environmental awareness, extinction of species, and the recklessness with which man has "civilized" the wilderness.

Well done Mr. Hoose, well done.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing Non-fiction .......2006-03-23

I picked this book up based on recommendations from online reader groups who said it would read more like fiction than non-fiction. They were right! Hoose has meticulously researched the plight of the "Lord God Bird", the ivory-billed woodpecker, documenting the efforts to locate the dwindling population and the sad effects of man vs. nature. Well highlighted by photographs, we follow the loss of this magnificent creature as its habitat is swallowed up by man's greed in the first half of the twentieth century. Hoose's writing is vivid and engrossing and caused me to do that rarest of things---go online and research more for myself. Most interesting of all is that just after this book was published, there have been reports of the rediscovery of the ivory-bill! This is a wonderful book appropriate for people of all ages and especially those who are worried about the endangerment of species by mankind's shortsightedness. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The Lord God Bird.......2005-11-18

I thought that this book was well written, reasearched, and thought through. But as a 12 year old I didn't enjoy it quite as much as i think an older person would. I think that the author wrote the stories well, and made them very drawing. This book was not one of my favorite books, partially because it was very hard to read. The other reason was beause to me it was a bit confusing. I could see him doing a kids version of the same book, but making it a bit simpler or shorter. I thought that the author did a great job in writing this book, but I think you should wait to read it until you are a bit older. Some people I know thought it was a great book, but they're older than me. So again I thought that this was an o.k. book, but not a great kid's read.

4 out of 5 stars The Lord God Bird.......2005-11-17

I thought that this book was well written, and thoroughly researched, but I didn't enjoy it very much. It was a very sad book. The author did a great job writing the story's fact for fact, but there were some parts where you say "awwww" and feel bad for these birds. In one story he wrote, a man went on a hunting trip to find a "Lord God Bird" and killed a family of them, including two babies. The hunter also killed many more birds that trip. I would not recommend this book unless you enjoy sad stories. It is one of those books that draws you into certain stories, but in between them you really want to put the book down.

4 out of 5 stars Studying the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker and Trying Too Late to Save It........2005-11-08

"The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" is a chronicle of the history and demise of the ivory-billed woodpecker. It was written for children ages 9-12 but is perfectly suitable for adults as well. The book is large format in size, which makes the font bigger, but there is just as much text on each page as in an adult book, and there is nothing conspicuously juvenile about it. The large dimensions allow for nice black-and-white photographs of ivory-bills, their habitat, and the people who studied the birds.

Author Phillip Hoose follows human interest in the ivory-bill woodpecker from Alexander Wilson's encounter with the bird in 1809 as he was working on his 9-volume "American Ornithology" to John James Audubon's work sketching the bird in natural poses around 1820. By 1900, large scale deforestation in Southern states had made the ivory-bill rare. At this point, "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" turns its attention to the collectors who were continuing to mine the population when they clearly shouldn't have been and the beginnings of organized conservation efforts, starting with the "Plume Wars" that sought to end the slaughter of birds to decorate ladies' hats. It describes the 1935 Cornell University expedition by Jim Tanner, George Sutton, Arthur "Doc" Allen, and Paul Kellogg to record bird calls of nearly 100 species in the Tensas Swamp in Louisiana. That's followed up by an account of Jim Tanner's 3 years studying the few remaining ivory-bills for the Audubon Society, 1937-1939, from which he wrote his still-famous book.

As Tanner was creeping around in it, the Singer Manufacturing Company sold logging rights to the Singer Tract, where the last known ivory-bills lived, and efforts to preserve the forest by purchasing it failed. The ivory-billed woodpecker was declared extinct. A couple chapters are dedicated to recent searches for the ivory-bill in Cuba and the United States, but this book was published before the announcement in April 2005 that the ivory-bill may still live. In the back of the book, there are maps of the shrinking ivory-bill habitat 1800-present, a chronology of important dates in ivory-bill and bird conservation, a glossary of terms, a detailed list of sources, and an index. "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" is a readable and informative account of the actions and circumstances that brought the ivory-bill woodpecker to near-extinction in spite of a persistent human fascination with the bird and concerted efforts to save it. For more information on sightings of the ivory-bill since it was presumed extinct in the 1940s, see Tim Gallagher's book "The Grail Bird: Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker".

"Of all the people I play against, the only one I truly fear is Larry Bird."--Magic Johnson, from the Foreword.

The heart and soul of a champion: his life, his career, his game. To understand basketball, you have to understand Larry Bird. Arguably the greatest all-around player the game has ever known, he led the Boston Celtics from the basement to three world championships, collecting three NBA Most Valuable Player awards along the way. Yet, despite these massive accomplishments, Bird has rarely talked to the press, and much about the man has remained a mystery. Now in Drive, the long-silent superstar sets the record straight, revealed a side of himself-and of basketball-you've never see before. Inside, you'll learn Bird's most private feelings about: The momentous decision to transfer from Bobby Knight's Indiana University to Indiana State. The heartbreak of his father's suicide and his own failed marriage. The single-minded discipline that tumed a small-town hero into a national superstar. The Boston Garden and the legendary Celtic charm. The Isiah Thomas controversy and the fierce Celtic-Laker rivalry. The great players of the NBA: including Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins, and Michael Jordan, and much more. here is the book that puts a basketball legend-and his game-on the line. And scores!

    3 out of 5 stars Non Fiction.......2007-09-03

It is quite likely that this bloke from absolutely nowheresville Indiana's picture would be next to a dictionary that had an entry that said 'White Men Can't Jump'. If you can do everything else though, you can win a lot, and even get some of those Championship type ornaments to hang in your stadium and about your preosn.

    4 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2007-06-12

This is the story of a person who is one of the greatest players of all time, Larry Bird. He grew up in the small town of French Lick, Indiana. He came from a very poor family of six. His mother was a hard worker and took care of the family. Larry's father, Joe, worked for little money at a shoe company. This was hard for Larry, but it got worse. His father committed suicide when he is young, which forces his mother to work two jobs.

Larry didn't always love basketball. His first love was baseball. He also liked football, but these two sports didn't work for him, so he decided to play basketball. Larry didn't really start liking basketball until his sophomore year, but then he starts to live for the sport. His high school coach helped him improve his skills and during Larry's junior and senior year he goes to the state championship. After high school Larry goes to Indiana State University, where, during his senior year, they go to the NCAA championship to face Michigan State and Magic Johnson. Unfortunately, Larry lost in the most watched final ever.

My favorite part of the book is the Foreword by Magic Johnson because it explains how Larry Bird changed the game of basketball forever.

This book is similar to with other sports biographies. It shows how Larry worked hard to get where he is similar to Bo Knows Bo by Bo Jackson. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sports and is a fan of Larry Bird

4 out of 5 stars Must Read for "Bird" Fans.......2006-07-06

A great and truly under-rated sports book. Bob Ryan (the actual writer) is a long-time Boston Globe columnist and a terriffic writer. He captures the essence of Larry Bird, from his childhood to his journey through high school and college to his emergence as both a basketball legend in the NBA and a larger-than-life sports hero in Boston. You may like this book even if you don't care for basketball. You will definitely enjoy this book if you area a hoops fan. And if you are a Larry Bird fan and you haven't read this book... shame on you!

4 out of 5 stars Book review for Drive.......2006-01-25

    Book review on Drive

Dedication, spirit, and heart are some of the words you can use to describe Larry Bird. Larry is a small boy growing up in the rural town of French Lick, Indiana. He never thought that one game of basketball would change the course of history and send him on the road to stardom. This book takes you on a journey inside the game and the life of an N.b.a. superstar. I recommend this book to basketball fans of all ages.
The combined themes of sadness and irony make this a great and unique novel. An example of irony is when Larry enrolled at Indiana University. He spent less than a month there then hitch hiked back to French Lick. An example of sadness happened when Larry was 19 years old. His father committed suicide so his family could have the money from his life insurance.
There were many characters that Larry talks about in his book. He talks about his first basketball coach Jim Jones who taught him the fundamentals of the game. He talks about his siblings Mike, Mark, Linda, Jeff, and Eddie. He talks about his teammates Kevin McHale and Robert Parish. He even talks about his opponents (Ervin Johnson, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, and James Worthy to name a few).
When he played in the N.B.A., he traveled across the country playing basketball. Therefore, their were many settings in this book. The main setting was Indiana. It was very hot there and most of the men around where he lived were farmers. Another main setting was Boston, Mass.
I recommend this book to any basketball fan wanting to know about the game. This book brings you closer to the game and shows you the life of a basketball star. The main lesson in this book is that nothing comes easy in life. It's hard to realize how much work it takes to become successful. Read this book and you'll find out.

4 out of 5 stars Lacks the "wow" factor........2006-01-14

This book is a good read about one of the greatest players to ever lace 'em up, but....it reads more like a review of his basketball career rather than a true look inside the man Larry Bird. It's a must read for any Bird or Celtic fan and would be a great addition to any personal library.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2002-07-08

Beautiful story! My daughter loves it! This book is a classic that every child must hear. I have to read it over and over again to my three-year-old daughter. She loves the story and the names of the ducks.

5 out of 5 stars Abran paso a los Patitos (Make Way for Ducklings).......2001-08-18

This is a classic written by Robert McClosky in the 1940's, but is timeless like all classics. The duck parents are flying over Boston looking for a place to hatch their eggs and raise their ducklings. This version is all in Spanish, but I found out after ordering this book that there is a bilingual version also. It is a really long book to begin with so it would be interesting to see the bilingual version.

A fabulous book and fantastically well translated by Osvaldo Blanco. Having read many books translated from English to Spanish, I feel that Sr. Blanco's translations are among the best and true to the original work.

That was someone trying to comment on Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears.

I have always loved the English version of Make Way for Ducklings. Now, as a student of Spanish and a teacher of children's Spanish classes, I greatly appreciate this translation.

4 out of 5 stars This tale is about a mosquito who gets the jungle in a jam........1999-04-29

This tiny mosquito scared everybody in the jungle because the animals have an alarm system. One animal runs one way and another the opposite way and this bird chirps and this rabbit hops and so on and so on. The animals do this to show that there is danger ahead. This works, but this time it was a false alarm. In all the commotion a baby owl falls out of a tree and dies. Now the owl will not make the sun come up.

This book was a little long on words and short on pictures. A good story but not very exciting.

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent journal that will last a lifetime!.......2004-05-31

I bought this book in 1992 when it first came out, and entered my Life List up to that date. It's still my Life List journal for North American birds -- the most recent was a migrating Wilson's Warbler that stopped to rest here during this past week, probably because of the heavy rain. Getting the book out to make that entry today is what inspired me to write this review.

Unlike the check-off lists in the back of the field guides, where there is barely room for the date the bird was seen, this handsome volume has the common and scientific names for each species, little check-off boxes for whether you saw it or heard it (or both), a line each for the date, location, and habitat, along with extra lines for any further remarks. The margins are nice and wide, too, allowing for yet more comments, and there's some blank pages in the back. I use those for my secondary list of birds we have seen on our hobby farm in Minnesota (87 species to date.)

In the 12 years I've had my copy of this journal, I have entered plenty of notes. Paging through the book is a double delight, both for the fond memories and the gorgeous reproductions of 48 Audubon paintings. In addition to the artwork, there's a nice intro by Norman Boucher, some marginal quotations from Audubon's journals, and updated remarks about endangered species and subspecies. The order of the bird list follows the 1983 American Onithologist's Union (A.O.U.) Checklist of north American Birds. There's also an index, so you can locate a species quickly.

The book itself measures 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, with a library quality binding, a full-color textbook-type cover (i.e., no dust cover) and heavy glossy pages that will last a lifetime. It's a bit bulky to carry along on birdwalks, but that's not how I use it anyway. I keep this book at home on the shelf, safe from the many perils of the trail (such as today's rain!) When I sight a new bird, I transfer the entry from my field notes when I get back. I do find that fresh ballpoint ink smears on the slick paper if you're not careful, but this problem is easily solved. Simply insert a piece of typing paper between the pages until the ink dries. This is a small inconvenience compared to the permanence of the book. I plan to pass my copy down as a family heirloom.
