Book Description
The second novel in David Gemmell’s bestselling Troy trilogy. Interlacing myth and history, and high adventure, this is epic storytelling at its very best.
War is looming, and all the kings of the Great Green are gathering, each with their own dark plans of conquest and plunder.
Into this maelstrom of treachery come three travellers: Piria, a runaway priestess nursing a terrible secret; Kalliades, a warrior with high ideals and a legendary sword; and his close friend Banokles, who will carve his own legend in the battles to come.
Together they journey to the fabled city of Troy, where a darkness is falling that will eclipse the triumphs and personal tragedies of ordinary mortals for centuries to come.

imaginative story, pulp writing.......2007-09-23
Shield of Thunder, like Lord of the Silver Bow, both show great imagination in plot, but pure pulp delivery. If you get a kick out of this period in history, by all means read these books, but I doubt if you'll be moved to reread them.
I am so sorry to hear that David passed........2007-09-09
I have read all of David's novels and loved them all. He shall be missed. Great job David. GOD's speed and blessing be upon you.
Solid adventure.......2007-08-13
Part two of the late David Gemmell's Troy trilogy is begins a few months after the failed attempt at removing King Priam from power in Troy. Princess Andromache is adjusting to life at court, while Hektor is sailing the seas and fighting off pirates; he's filling in while Helikaon (known to us as Aeneas) is sick. King Odysseus, King Agamemnon and several other rulers attend the wedding games of Hektor and Andromache, and trouble is stirred up and brought to the boiling point. The last third of the book is devoted to the series of battles that make up the early years of The Trojan War, which is made out to be something like the ancient world's version of World War II.
Once again David Gemmell creates a real living, breathing world out of something that has been romanticized and usually seems inaccessible to the modern reader. Gemmell has taken a very human approach to the Trojan War story, by eliminating the gods and making the heroes human with real strengths and weaknesses. The action scenes are bloody and seem pretty realistic (though it is never gratuitous). While this is a bridge book, it never felt like it, except that while a major battle is completed by the end, the war is far from over. Also while the gist of the story is the same, many of the details are different. Like the marriage of Paris and Helen are mentioned, but it is hardly the reason for the war.
I really liked this book, and Gemmell's fans will not be disappointed with it. I am eagerly waiting for the last book, due out soon.
Troy remix.......2007-06-14
The Shield of Thunder continues Gemmell's exciting, refreshing Trojan War series. With its action, noble warriors, and gorgeous, heroic women, it is the equivalent of a summer blockbuster (a good one, not a Michael Bay film). I like how Gemmell strays from the classic mythology by reducing Hektor and Achilles to supporting characters, exalting Aeneas and Andromache as primary characters, and creating new characters in Kalliades and Banokles. This isn't Homer's Trojan War: Helen and Paris play a minor role, and the Olympians seem to be sitting this one out. To be fair, the novel displays little complexity; most of the characters can be summarized in one sentence. The good guys are heroes and the bad guys are rapists. Even when the good guys turn bad briefly, they're still good. I also thought that the opening premise about Andromache was not resolved completely; and the outcome of the Kalliope storyline felt a little like a copout. In the next volume, I hope Gemmell (or his designee, RIP) gives us a Mykene as a primary character so we can see the war from the "enemy" perspective. I highly recommend the novel and the series and look forward to the next installment.
Can't wait for the third book.......2007-05-21
David Gemmell has breathed new life into a well-known story and made the Bronze Age come alive. His rich imagination created a host of new heroes and heroines of hitherto secondary characters of Iliad without sacrificing the voice of Homer. I hope we'll get to see the third book published, completing this wonderful trilogy.

Many different soul surviviving techniques!.......2007-03-11
I got some encouragement and growth inspiring information from this book, and some was too deep for me. I prefer the simple soul learning, and tend to remember information to help me the more simple it is to apply.
Inspiring, truly soul nourishing.......2004-07-06
This book is wonderful. I bought it a few years ago when I was just browsing and not really looking for anything special. The title drew me in. This culmination of writers and various points of view on how to nourish your soul really makes you think. It's helped me find peace in so many ways. It's helped remind me what is important in life and how to be good to myself.
This is a book you will refer to over and over again!.......2002-02-19
I picked up this book when I was at a low point in my life. It awakened me to a new way of seeing - both myself and the world around me. Handbook for the soul is a wonderful collection of short essays, by various people, all with the same message. It is one of my most favourite books and I highly recommend it!
Great book for anyone looking for "something more".......2000-05-08
This is an excellent anthology of essays by many accomplished scholars (see the list of names above). Some are psychotherapists, some former ministers, and some psychiatrists; many are simply inspirational writers. This is a calming book with eclectic selections that will suit most tastes.
Thought provoking essays on the soul........1998-04-11
Anything Richard Carlson lays his hands on is worth considering reading. Each essay offers a philsophical view worth pondering guiding the perseptive reader closer to the inner self. The wealth of information well surprasses the few dollars spent on this compilation.

I'd rather smell diapers..........2007-10-16
than read the rest of this book. Despite her Princeton degree (which I think calls into question the caliber of the school), Brooke Shields has all the writing skill of the average 6 year-old. She is out of touch with the real world; she is a privileged, pampered, sniveling wench. Her complaints of powdery CLEAN diaper smell, having to take a crap, and having to be cleaned by a nurse because she was too damn lazy to take care of herself, all smacks of ego and elitism. I wish she had jumped out of the window, or swallowed the bottle of pills than taken taken pen to paper. I want my money back as I couldn't stomach one more chapter of this drivel.
I will however keep it on my bookshelf, because whenever I do feel depressed, this book with indeed be the antidote. For THAT, I thank Brooke Shields. What a hilarious, mad-cap adventure it is!
depicts PPD perfectly.......2007-09-30
I, too, had severe PPD. I, too, have written a book about it. This is 50 times better than Marie Osmond's book. If you are gettting it because it's written by a celebrity..well I suppose that's appealing to some people...but this was not like Marie's book in that regard. Brooke comes across as a regular person. PPD is not picky about who it afflicts. Brooke is real and open and brutally honest. She helped me identify some feelings I'd not been able to express. Thank you, Brooke, for doing such a great job! I have no idea what you could've done better. In my opinion, this was dead on and flawless. If you don't buy my book, buy Brooke's!
Just OK - not really that much on PPD.......2007-09-10
It felt like the PPD was discussed very briefly and most of the book was her telling her story of how she grew up, how she wanted a baby, how hard it was to get there, how she missed her old life, how she then loved her baby, how cute her baby is, how she balanced her career and motherhood, her relationship with her mother, yada yada yada. I certainly wouldn't read this book to learn about PPD. It is just an easy read book if you are interested in looking into the lives of celebrities.
Changed my life!!.......2007-09-04
I'm so glad i bought this book. I was suffering from postpartum depression, and I was ashamed of the thoughts that i was thinking and why i didnt feel a bond with my daughter... I read the book and it made me realize I needed to do something about it. GREAT BOOK!!
Honestly Written.......2007-08-15
Honestly written, so truthful,I am sure it was as painful to write as it was to experience. This had to be. For Tom (Jack*ff) Cruise to go spurting off his ideas and opinions(opinions obviously not solicited from Brook or her husband) was not only in poor taste, but dangerous. What is wrong with him? Not that I think America at large listens to Tom, I for one will not buy any paper, book, see any movie or show that endorses him. As for his poor wife katie Holmes she looks miserable and should run....not walk away from this marriage. He is as lousy as a bedside doctor as he is an actor. Matt Lauer should have b*tched slapped him when he got in his face. While I myself had uneventful pregnancies and no problems after(NO blues, thank God)It is thoughtful and honest and gives other women hope. God Bless Brook and her children.
Book Description
To Kill a Mockingbird, the twentieth-centurys most widely read American novel, has sold thirty million copies and still sells a million yearly. Yet despite the books perennial popularity, its creator, Harper Lee has become a somewhat mysterious figure. Now, after years of research, Charles J. Shields has brought to life the warmhearted, high-spirited, and occasionally hardheaded woman who gave us two of American literatures most unforgettable charactersAtticus Finch and his daughter, Scoutand who contributed to the success of her lifelong friend Truman Capotes masterpiece, In Cold Blood. At the center of Shieldss lively book is the story of Lees struggle to create her famous novel. But her life contains many other highlights as well: her girlhood as a tomboy in overalls in tiny Monroeville, Alabama; the murder trial that made her beloved fathers reputation and inspired her great work; her journey to Kansas as Capotes ally and research assistant to help report the story of the Clutter murders; the surrogate family she found in New York City. Drawing on six hundred interviews and much new information, Mockingbird is the first book ever written about Harper Lee. Highly entertaining, filled with humor and heart, this is an evocative portrait of a writer, her dream, and the place and people whom she made immortal.

Insights into the Life of a Very Private Woman.......2007-08-11
Charles J. Shields got off to a slow start in Mockingbird but readers who suffered through the rather mind-numbing first chapter were rewarded with an intriguing Nelle Harper Lee biography that got stronger and stronger as each chapter unfolded. Shields managed to give insights into Harper Lee, the woman, despite the fact that her public life and career have been limited to relatively few milestones, events that her admirers find interesting even today.
Nelle grew up in the small Alabama town of Monroeville where she was much like the tomboyish character Scout who was the central figure in her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird. After high school she went on to Huntingdon College and, under pressure from her father, later studied law at the University of Alabama but did not graduate. Nelle was determined to become a writer and left law school to move to New York so that she could concentrate on that.
The events that define the public Harper Lee all started to happen around 1960 and they make up the heart of the book:
* Publication and immediate success of To Kill a Mockingbird
* Her intimate involvement in the research for In Cold Blood with her oldest friend in the world, Truman Capote
* Filming of To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Gregory Peck
* Her disappearance from public view and lack of a second novel
Nelle Harper Lee was very fortunate to find, early on, a gifted and patient editor in the person of Tay Hohoff who worked with her through the numerous drafts required to transform Nelle's stories into the unified novel that they ultimately became. Within just a few weeks of publication, To Kill a Mockingbird was on the top ten lists of both the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune and had become a Reader's Digest Condensed Book (considered quite an honor in those days).
While all this was happening, Nelle was helping her childhood friend and neighbor, Truman Capote, do the Kansas research required for the creation of his own masterpiece, In Cold Blood. In fact, it is unlikely that Capote would have been able to write such a groundbreaking work if Nelle Lee had not made herself available to serve as his "assistant" in Garden City, Kansas. Truman Capote did not have the kind of personality or presence that went over well in rural Kansas and without Nelle there to open doors for him with her graceful southern personality and temperament he would have been unable to gather the inside information that makes In Cold Blood so special. Sadly enough, all of the help that Nelle gave Capote did not exempt her in later years from being treated with the same contempt and lack of respect with which he treated all of his supposed friends.
The chapter on the filming of To Kill a Mockingbird provides interesting insights into the personality of Gregory Peck and how he came to truly love Nelle Lee, remaining a friend of hers for the rest of his life, and is filled with stories and bits of gossip regarding most of the key members of the cast. Monroeville, Alabama, of the 1960s looked little like the Monroeville of the 1930s but such great care was taken to recreate the older version of Monroeville (even to taking exact measurements in the old court room) that many casual viewers of the movie assume that it was shot on location there.
The last chapters offered up by Shields attempt to explain the great mystery of why Nelle never wrote even a second book. In Shields' estimation, the lack of succeeding books was caused by circumstances as much as anything else. To Kill a Mockingbird became such a money-making machine that Nelle lost several years in nurturing it as she traveled the country making personal appearances, working on the movie and winning prizes for the book, including the Pulitzer. As she once said, before she knew it, she had lost a decade. More importantly, she seemed to feel the pressure of trying to measure up to the quality of her first novel to such an extent that she lost confidence in her ability to ever do so. She was a slow writer, by nature, and that in combination with the pressure to top one of the most popular books in the history of world literature may have been too much for her. After losing her agents and editor to death or retirement, she finally resigned herself to the fact that it was not going to happen and decided to return to the simple life she most preferred anyway.
Considering the fact that Nelle Harper Lee refused to participate in the writing of Mockingbird (as she has refused all interviews for the last several decades), Charles Shields has done a remarkable job of providing some perspective to a writer who has done her best to avoid publicity for most of her life.
Engrossing.......2007-08-06
Nelle Harper Lee is perhaps one of the most influential people in the 20th century (it's a little early to call on the 21st, but one can hope). This biography was thorough and well-written, but limited by the fact that Miss Lee truly wants to be left alone. Not only did she not participate in the creation of this book, but most of her closest friends, family and confidantes closed ranks and refused to talk as well. It is still well worth reading, as even a limited view is fascinating.
Killing a Mockingbird.......2007-07-25
I read this well-written and often engrossing book in a single weekend. Less, if you consider that I got it on Saturday afternoon and was done with it Sunday night. I read it because Nelle Harper Lee (I had no idea her first name was Nelle; not Harper) created To Kill A Mockingbird. Because To Kill Mockingbird is a book that stayed with me all this time even though my then-English teacher used it (in part) to teach us what the subject and object of a sentence was. But when I read this book, gulped it down really, I felt guilty. Because this act of reading it--like the act of writing and researching and publishing it--is so contrary to what To Kill A Mockingbird is about. At least to me.
At one point, Atticus tells Jem to "shoot at bluejays all you want, if you can hit `em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Charles Shields didn't listen. Because as he himself admits (not in so many words maybe but it's there) Nelle Harper Lee has become the literary equivalent of Boo Radley. A lady who treasures her past and friends as jealously as she treasures her privacy. A lady who stays at home because she does not want to come out. And so I have no doubt that by digging up her old skeletons and exposing them for all to see (and incidentally demonstrating that in the age of the Internet there is no such thing as privacy) Charles Shields caused her much pain. And was it worth it?
Do I think any less of Atticus (A.C. Lee) because he is not as perfect? Do I need to know all the less-than-pleasant details of what happened to Dill (Truman Capote) before, during and after? And do I need to see the old (and not-so-old) gossip about Harper Lee herself? For what, finally, emerges from this biography in the end? What is the Harper Lee story for whose sake Charles Shields invaded Harper Lee's privacy, friends, and family?
At the end, what emerges is the story of a decent lady who loves her family and friends, lives in the little Southern town of Monroeville and (maybe because she loves books) has a modest little apartment in New York. What emerges is a lady quick to laugh and quick of temper; a lady who wrote her book not because she believes in Causes but because she loves real people. A lady who is "just folks". But then anyone who had read To Kill A Mockingbird already knew that.
So why cause Nelle Harper Lee pain to tell us what we already knew? Because it was a challenge, maybe. But that's not a good enough reason - even if the end is a well-written, well-crafted, and very respectful book. It's not good enough because researching and publishing that book (and probably reading it too) was a bit like killing a mockingbird.
It was wrong.
Interesting. but..........2007-06-13
A lot of research went into this biography. For fans of TKAM, it is amazing and fun to get the backstory of the book and movie. If, however, you are looking for a biography of a woman who's values reflect the book she wrote, you will be disappointed. My disappointment was that Harper Lee did not cooperate with this biography. That was not Shield's fault. He writes about Lee with a great deal of respect. For me, a great fan of TKAM, it was a marvelous read and a page turner.
The story behind the story.......2007-02-26
Reading biography is not always my cup of tea, but I've loved TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD since junior high, and I felt compelled to read this biography of the enigmatic author. I was pleasantly surprised; the biography is nicely written and very readable. I finished it in a couple of days, which is unusual for someone who generally finds non-fiction reading slow going.
The book traces the life of Nelle Harper Lee from her beginnings in Monroeville, Alabama through the writing of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and her now-famous work with Truman Capote on the research of IN COLD BLOOD. Details of the post-Mockingbird phase of Lee's life become somewhat sketchy, but, given Lee's studied attempt to remain well out of the literary limelight, I think we can assume that Mr. Shields does the best he can with the material available to him.
As a fan of the novel, I found most interesting the parallels between the real-life Monroeville and the fictional Maycomb, Alabama. Shields does a good job of ferreting out possible models for the characters in the novel, and, yes, there apparently really was a Boo Radley.
This look at Lee's life also reminds us that good writing is hard work and that sometimes success can carry a hefty price tag.
I highly recommend MOCKINGBIRD for all fans of Harper Lee's novel.

Not Just for Sports .......2007-03-16
Although the Elusive Fan is written for sports marketing and managers in mind, the concepts are equally applicable to other entities which depend upon their members for loyalty and financial support. Like sports, the arts are facing new competition and are also a marketplace for people with only a limited amount of time and money. My husband works for a non profit art foundation and the marketing ideas presented in the book apply to that type of entity just the same as to the sports groups. One of his responsibilities is increasing interest in art among different community groups. He found the marketing information very useful and has implemented some of the suggestions. For example, he has applied the author's recommendations for engaging the youth market and expanded the youth art camp at the foundation, hopefully developing loyalty and a lifelong interest in art for students (and their parents). The book offers lots of ideas for attracting fans/members and developing a thorough brand-building framework, often using real world case studies. I definitely recommend this book to anyone in an industry which needs to attract and keep their fans/members.
The concepts span beyond sports.......2007-02-08
The Elusive Fan may be about sports, but the principles and strategies the authors discuss can be applied to any sector in the world of business. I am in the film and entertainment industry and have benefited greatly from the innovative concepts The Elusive Fan develops. I particularly liked chapter three on how fans connect, which details the critical connection points that encourage fans to choose one product over another. The book's branding focus has also helped me refine my segmentation strategies and develop a marketing plan. I wouldn't call myself a sports fan, but reading how competitive the sports industry has become -- and what the authors recommend to attract and engage fans -- gave me insight into how to market my own products and brand. Whether it's sports, film, or insurance, we're all searching for our Elusive Fans, and Rein, Kotler, and Shields have the definitive guide on how to capture them.
"The Elusive Fan" Won't Have Any Trouble Captivating a Wide Audience.......2006-07-26
Rein, Shields and Kotler manage to score effortlessly in this fascinating look behind the scenes of sports marketing. In the electronic age, consumers are bombarded by so many choices, retaining fans is an immense and expensive challenge. The ultimate arena, in which sports and teams compete for market share, advertising dollars, ticket revenue and television proceeds is a diffcult place to compete with old business models and antiquated ideas.
The dynamic answer to the daunting challenges posed by today's marketplace is provided by communications scholars Irving Rein and Ben Shields and renowned marketing guru Philip Kotler. This book provides a new understanding how the sports marketing world works, how teams can capture a larger share that market by adhering to new fan-based management philosophies.
This book is the rare subject to transcend the boundries between the worlds of sports and marketing. Any serious sports fan will be enthralled by the fascinating case studies and behind-the-scenes look at professional athletics. Industry insiders, marketers, advertisers and communications specialists will be equally glad to have read this ground-breaking book. Well regarded markerting and communications experts, Rein and Kotler bring experience and flare to the "Elusive Fan" and are matched perfectly as writing partners with the young and rising-star communications specialist Ben Shields.
Buy this book and peek behind the curtain at what makes the most exciting industry in the world as thrilling as it is and how the all-important fan fits into it all.
How to prosper in a "competitive and fragmented marketplace" .......2006-07-20
Competition for disposal income spent on recreation and entertainment is probably more intense now than it has ever been before. On any given day, we have so many choices and all of them have direct or indirect costs. This is especially true of sporting events, many of which are televised. The title of this book refers to someone whose financial support is increasingly more difficult to attract and then sustain. According to Rein, Kotler, and Shields, "All sports need to be constantly adapting and if necessary changing to accommodate a competitive and fragmented marketplace." Their book suggests how to achieve that objective by adopting and implementing a "strategic approach that emphasizes fan connection, innovative segmentation, brand-building, and sustaining market share."
In essence, marketing either creates or increases demand for whatever is offered. With regard to the sports industry (at all levels from local youth and school teams to professional leagues and international competition such as the Olympics), the authors assert that those responsible for marketing must reinvent their thinking in terms of athletes, teams, leagues , and events in order to differentiate them from competition which, yes, includes the option to commit no hours and dollars whatsoever. Instead of buying a ticket to a baseball game, for example, and probably purchase food, beverages, and merchandise while attending it, why not stay home and watch the same game on television? Or instead watch another television program or DVD? Or read a book such as The Elusive Fan? Or go for a walk in the woods?
In this volume, Rein, Kotler, and Shields address questions such as these:
1. How to connect with "the elusive fan"?
2. How to reinvent a sports brand?
3. How to generate the transformation of that brand?
4. How to implement the brand's transformation?
5. How to communicate the brand effectively?
6. How to sustain the fan connection with the brand?
7. Which sports branding initiatives have been most successful?
8. What lessons can be learned from them?
9. What is the future of "fan connection"?
10. How to respond effectively to "the most elusive fans who are just now being born"?
This brilliant book will be of substantial value to decision-makers in the sports industry who must decide how to market what they offer to an increasingly more crowded marketplace but I presume to suggest that it will also be of great interest and value to others who also struggle to understand -- and then respond effectively to -- the increasingly more "elusive" consumers within those decision-makers' marketplace.
I especially appreciate the fact that Rein, Kotler, and Shields devote relatively little attention to theories, hypotheses, etc. and spend most of their time rigorously examining real-world examples of those organizations which have achieved marketing success by initiating and then sustaining the aforementioned "strategic approach that emphasizes fan connection, innovative segmentation, brand-building, and sustaining market share." They are a commendably diverse selection of effectively marketed sports brands (both individuals and organizations) and include the Kentucky Derby, Maria Sharapova, owner Mark Cuban the Dallas Mavericks, the University of Vermont men's basketball team, general manager Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics , South Lake Carroll (Texas) High School's football program, the Professional Bowlers Association, NASCAR's Daytona 500 (the "Great American Race"), and the Northwestern University women's lacrosse team. However different they are in almost every respect, all are successful sports brands because each "has transformed into a strong, identifiable, and differentiated brand and is an example of how to execute two critical brand differentiation tools - [begin italics] benchmarking and innovation. [end italics]"
In the final chapter, Rein, Kotler, and Shields identify and then discuss six successful "drivers" of successful sports brands (please see pages 295-306) and as I absorbed and digested this material, it struck me that the same "drivers" (after appropriate modification) could achieve the same marketing objectives for almost any other category of brand, especially as most products and services have by now become commodities in their respective marketplaces which are also "crowded" in ways and to an extent which are unprecedented.
Trace the etymology of the word "fan" and you will learn that it is an abbreviation of the word "fanatic" and probably first appeared in England in 1525, referring to an "insane person," from the Latin word fanaticus. Winston Churchill once explained that a fanatic "is someone who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." Although Rein, Kotler, and Shields limit their attention to the sports world, I again suggest that their probing and illuminating insights also have direct, indeed compelling relevance to most (if not all other) market segments and categories. Moreover, that relevance seems certain to become even greater in years to come.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Michael Mandelbaum's The Meaning of Sports: Why Americans Watch Baseball, Football, and Basketball and What They See When They Do; also D. Stanley Eitzen`s Sport in Contemporary Society: An Anthology.
informative, entertaining, timely.......2006-07-16
The Elusive Fan is an enjoyable read with a good blend of facts and analysis. It is entertaining yet serious. As new forms of entertainment emerge rapidly and businesses of all types hire consultants to compete for our attention and dollars, The Elusive Fan articulates the changes we are witnessing and describes how sports fit in to our evolving economy and culture.

Seminal Book on Personal Intercession.......2000-11-15
A seminal book on personal intercession. I've used Prayer Shield as a textbook, and I've sent copies to several ministers to help them initiate prayer support for their own ministry.
The concept of intercession being one of the gifts of the Spirit is ground breaking. Wagner's treatise on the different functions of intercession is vital for any serious prayer ministry.
The bottom line of this book is if a pastor fails in ministry the congregation needs only to look at their amount (or lack) of prayer support to answer the inevitable question of "Why?"
Prayer Shield.......2000-05-16
Prayer Shield covers the topic of personal intercession.. e.g. of those who are commited to pray for and cover an individual (such as a pastor or the leader of a ministry) in prayer. It begins by sharing some true stories of the power of prayer, and also develops what the Bible teaches on the subject of intercession and prayer partners.
The second chapter explores intercessors from every angle.. I feel that one of the most powerful insights in the book is the concept of different types of prayer assignments, and how to determine which type you fit into as an intercessor. E.g., some people specialize in thoroughly praying a request through, and they desire details and feedback and keep prayer lists and prayer journals detailing their requests and how/when God answered them. Others tend to be more prophetic in nature. They find it hard to take requests from people and do not like to keep lists.. they prefer to come before the Lord and get their prayer assignment directly from Him. You need to give lots of details and feedback to those who specialize in praying a request through, but you don't want to bog a prophetic intercessor down with too many specific details and requests. Peter identifies 4 types of intercessors. The book help leaders to determine which prayer-type their intercessors are so they can give them prayer information/requests in a manner that works best for them.
Subsequent chapters develop why pastors and leaders need personal intercession, and how they can begin developing and mobalizing personal intercessors. It teaches leaders how to recieve intercession and how to develop relationship with their intercessors and how to supply them with the information they need to be effctive.
(A personal note.. I used to be one of Peter and Doris Wagner's personal intercessors, and I can attest that they live what they teach in this book.. and as an intercessor, I found their system very workable.)

Great resource.......2007-09-08
I like this book very much. It has more information than the other drug guides I have seen. It is in strict alphabetical order by generic name. I work in a busy ER and the other nurses seek out my book, which I buy new every year. I highly recommend this book.
excellent.......2007-06-13
the product was new in perfect conditions just like advertised
The GOLDEN Standard of all Drug Guides for Nurses.......2007-04-03
Prentice Hall Drug Guide is by far, the BEST authority available for nurses currently. It beats the competition hands down because it simply contains all the pertinent information that nurses seek (and are not included in other drug guides.) For instance, I teach nursing and we were discussing the half-life of Dilantin. We searched through several of the other drug books, but no info.
So, I gave the class a short break, walked out to my car to get the Prentice Hall out of my trunk and in 3 minutes, we were reading the information of the half - life of Dilantin, which incidentally, is 22 hours. This is extremely helpful type of information that Nurses need to know in order to grow their professional backgrounds. I love the organization of the book - it has a very comprehensive list of medications; the pages are neat and easy to read and I noticed that lots of other nursing schools are using it as well as thier resource.
The only draw-back to owning the Prentice Hall book is that is it super - heavy in weight. It adds alot of heaviness to a student's already bursting sachel of books, but the pay-off is a great one.
Get this book and become smarter than anyone else in the classroom,
or if being competitively intelligent doesn't turn you on, then just stick to the lighter weight drug guides.
This is the most excellent one out there - trust me.
Good enough.......2007-03-17
This drug book has everything I need and I have stuck with this brand over the years because of it's ease in looking up various drugs. The online access disc that comes with it is nice, but you have to keep it in your drive in order for it to work. Whatever the computer lingo is: you can't download it to your computer. That would be a whole other program that you can purchase through them online.
Great book.......2007-01-13
I really like this book and find it very helpful with school work!!

Customer Reviews:
Hard to follow.......2005-09-16
I purchased this book in order to add serial IO to my .NET programs. I have been very sussessfull using VB6 in the past but could not get a single code example from the CD ROM to work with Visual studio 2003.
The Compact framework .Net examples did work however.
On top of all the problems the text is very hard to match up with the CDRom and does not follow. For instance it is stated that the .Net routines do not implement oncomm events yet it is programed in the code on the CDrom.
The most complete reference for VB serial-port programmers.......2004-10-04
This book covers serial-port programming in Visual Basic from VB's early editions through Visual Basic .NET, including programming for Windows CE. It's the most complete reference you'll find on the topic. Richard Grier has done a great job of keeping the book up to date through multiple editions. If you do serial-port programming in VB, this book will save you time and trouble.
Wow! Great Book.......2002-06-22
This is an excellent, excellent reference for using serial ports with VB. I can't say enough for this book. The author knows his material and communicates his knowledge very well. I am using it to write a communications program to interface with field devices using the modbus protocol. The book doesn't specifically cover modbus, but I still found this book to be very helpful. Again, excellent!
Serial Port Gold.......2002-03-04
For Visual Basic programmers working with serial ports, if you are not an expert at them, then you need this book. Since I already had a great deal of experience with serial ports, most of this was not new to me. However, instead of having to train some colleagues on all the details, I recommended they buy this book. They did and it made them very proficient with serial ports. They kept the books.
Looking for a Serial Comm Tutorial Type.......2001-10-30
One thing that i like in this book is the author's recommendation on how to optimize the serial communication program in terms of program execution speed. However, i do not like the way source codes are pointed out. Some codes are shaded gray and it took me time to find which code is being explained. Each line of code should have been numbered. Additionally, the book may need to add some more pages that will walk the reader through a small most common serial comm project from "scratch to finish". Overall, this book is a good reference.

Chameleons Are Cool.......2007-03-14
This book had lots of good facts about chameleons. The pictures were very colorful. Many of the pictures made me laugh! This book had lots of facts about chameleons that I did not know! I think every teacher should share this book with their class just like my teacher did!
Any young child who enjoys animals will like this book !.......2007-02-19
Colorfully drawn pictures and lively text show and tell lots of interesting facts about Chameleons. You'll think they're cool, too, after reading this book ! It is charming and informative and would be great for pre-readers as a read-to-me book or for elementaary school age.
Chameleons ARE cool.......2007-02-14
Brilliant illustrations, fun facts, fascinating for even the most reluctant readers. Chameleons Are Cool is a "must have" for elementary classroom libraries or the collection of any child interested in animals. This book corrects the common misconception that chameleons change color to camouflage themselves. Many other brief but fun facts are included which makes this selection a great non-fiction source for elementary grade researchers.
Did You Know............2001-04-02
Did you know that there are around 120 different kinds of chameleons, that their eyes move separately and their very long tongues have a sticky tip at the end? Did you know that chameleons are lizards, that some are the size of small cats and that they change colors when they're angry or too hot or cold or sick...but not to match their surroundings? Martin Jenkins loves chameleons and his enthusiasm is infectious. He's authored a marvelous book full of fun and interesting facts that's perfect for all young nature lovers. His enjoyable, conversational text is complimented by Sue Shields colorful, expressive artwork, that will mesmerize youngsters with its close-up attention to detail. Written for kids 5-9, Chameleons are Cool is a winner!
"Chameleons Are Cool" is COOL!.......2000-06-14
In our elementary school library, not many non-fiction books make it as successful read-aloud books. This is one of them.
Primary age students beg for this title. Both the brightly colored, humorous illistrations and the light conversational tone of the text grab the interest of the children. I'm continually amazed at how many facts about chameleons are slipped into this cheerful picture book, like "they change color when they're angry, or when they're too cold or too hot, or when they're sick."
Many pages have additional facts worked into the illustrations, such as "Chameleons usually get sick and die of kept as pets."
This book is to be recommended not only as a great read-aloud, but as a good source of information for students doing a report on chameleons. It even has a helpful index.
Book Description
2005 Coalition of Visionary Resources (COVR) 1st Runner Up in Magic/Magick category!
Is it possible to gain spiritual enlightenment even in difficult or threatening situations? In this thorough and thoughtful handbook, readers are urged to take responsibility for their own actions, ask what the situation might be teaching them, and hold compassion for those viewed as doing the harm.
Popular Wiccan author and teacher Christopher Penczak takes a threefold approach to protection magick in this guide for Witches, pagans, shamans, and psychics. First, find out how to protect yourself using personal energy, will, and intent. Next, discover how to connect with your guardian spirits, angels, and patron deities. Finally, learn how to use traditional spell craft and ritual for protection.
This book includes a CD that contains the following meditations read aloud by author Christopher Penczak:
- Protection meditations - Protection Spirit Journey - Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram
- The Magick Circle Ritual for Protection Spells

for wiccans.......2007-10-10
i think its a good book if you want to stand by someone elses morals but for yourself to learn no it only teaches you the weaker magick in my opinion...even tho it has some really good points.
You can't take the Hebrew out of Qabalism or Kabbalism.......2007-09-07
On page 115 of this book, Penczak describes a ritual that utilizes the Qabalistic Tree of Life. He states that, "Hebrew is a very magickal language." Too bad it didn't end there. He then suggests that, "Witches who like the ceremony but dislike the Hebrew associations, change the language or make variations of the ritual. I've done similar rituals, but called upon the Celtic goddesses and gods . . . because I feel greater kinship with them." This kind of cherry-picking is an endemic problem within the pagan community. What does "dislike" of "Hebrew associations" mean, but anti-semitism? Kabbalism is based within a Jewish tradition that explores cosmic mysteries contained in the Hebrew language. Remove the language out of "dislike" of "Hebrew associations" and you have nothing, nothing but some kind of prejudice. For example, one shouldn't study Santeria without its Yoruban Orishas, have a "dislike" of African associations, and thus substitute Slavic pantheons instead. There is something wrong with this approach. I wish Christoper Penczak well, and he seems to mean well, but this is careless, at best.
It's alright..........2007-08-13
For someone who has never been exposed to psychic-self defense, this is probably a good book, if a bit strong on the "harm none" aspect. It has some decent meditations and he spends a lot of time working on mindset, which I consider to be the most important part of defense. However, as someone who has read a number of other books on energy work, I found it to be rather strong on emphasizing ritual and materials. As a college student, I am unable to practice the smudging he talks about, and its not economically feasible for me to purchase all the different herbs and mixes and such that he recommends to use to protect yourself. I would have preferred a book that focused on things like affirmative visualizations and thoughts than one that requires to you rely on spirit allies and physical tools.
Witch's Shield.......2007-05-07
I am the worst person in the world in setting healthy boundaries. Yet I've worked in the health profession as an RN, as an Astrological counselor, a Reiki Master, all things that require healthy boundaries, yet are never discussed or taught. When I started this book, I thought that psychic shielding was for paranoids. After reading this book, I now understand and am finally being able to put to use healthy boundaries.
Mr. Penczak is always down to earth yet ethereal, he is engaging, and much more than merely "airy fairy," without being dull.
Read this book if you are into any of the healing arts at all.
Good Defense Against The Dark Arts Book.......2007-03-09
I bought this book because of the title. I've been Wiccan for over 20 years and I have yet to see any reason for protection or psychic self-defense. So I was curious as to what this book is all about. It's a good reading book with various ways to protect and self-defend. I learned a lot from it but still I never ran into any of the negativity the book speaks about but I've got to tell you if I ever do, I am well prepared for it. I do recommend this book to non-magick and magick folk just so you know what to do in case you get involved with the kind of negativity the book speaks on.
Plus it is so cool to get a book with such a direct link to the Harry Potter movies and books class of Defense Against The Dark Arts.
