Book Description
Hailed as "a rip-snortin', six-guns-blazin' saga of good guys and bad guys who were sometimes one and the same," Robert M. Utley's Lone Star Justice captured the colorful first century of Texas Ranger history. Now, in the eagerly anticipated conclusion, Lone Star Lawmen, Utley once again chronicles the daring exploits of the Rangers, this time as they bring justice to the twentieth-century West. Based on unprecedented access to Ranger archives, this fast-paced narrative stretches from the days of the Mexican Revolution (where atrocities against Mexican Americans marked the nadir of Ranger history) to the Branch Davidian saga near Waco and the recent bloody standoff with "Republic of Texas" militia. Readers will find in these pages one hundred years of high adventure. Utley follows the Rangers as they pursue bank robbers, bootleggers, moonshiners, and "horsebackers" (smugglers who used mule trains to bring liquor across the border). We see these fearless lawmen taming oil boomtowns, springing the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde, facing down angry lynch mobs, and tracking the "Phantom Killer" of Texarkana. Utley also highlights the gradual evolution of this celebrated force, revealing that while West Texas Rangers still occasionally ride the range on horseback and crack down on smugglers and rustlers, East Texas Rangers--who work mostly in big cities--now ride in high-powered cars and contend with kidnappers, forgers, and other urban criminals. But East or West, today's Rangers have become sophisticated professionals, backed by crime labs and forensic science. Written by one of the most respected Western historians alive, here is the definitive account of the Texas Rangers, a vivid portrait of these legendary peace officers and their role in a changing West.

The REAL story of the Texas Rangers - the good, the bad and the ugly.......2007-06-27
An accurate accounting of the modern-day Texas Rangers. A must read for the Texas Ranger enthusiast and those interested in the history of law enforcement in Texas. I loved the section about "Garrison's Rangers". A real good read!! I highly recommend.
A VALUABLE ADDITION TO TEXAS HISTORY.......2007-03-18
Much to the pleasure of Texans and history buffs acclaimed historian Robert Utley returns with his sequel to Lone Star Justice (2002) thus bringing the saga of the Texas Rangers to the present day. Many have been introduced to the Rangers via television with such programs as Walker or Texas Ranger, yet it is left to Utley to deliver the most telling and intriguing story of all.
We read, "One Riot, One Ranger. A single Ranger could quell an incipient riot. Rangers and Texans alike reveled in the image of the stalwart, fearless lawman facing down an angry mob. On occasion it came close enough to happening to provide at least an inspiration for the slogan."
Yes, the Rangers were and are, for many, men of mythic stature. Utley debunks some myths while perpetuating others. History is at its most fascinating as the Rangers enter the twentieth century leaving their beloved horses behind and chasing criminals in motorized vehicles. They're no longer after rustlers but set their sights on modern criminals and the utilization of contemporary methods, such as forensic science.
With Lone Star Lawmen readers view the Mexican Revolution (a dark point in Ranger history) and visit towns made rich and lawless by oil. The dramatic capture of Bonnie and Clyde is retold, as well as the Branch Davidian tragedy near Waco.
Prodigiously researched Lone Star Lawmen is one more valuable addition to Texas history.

Truth Trumps Mythology--Not a Moment Too Soon.......2007-02-18
As a proud native Texan I have relished the mythology of the Texas Rangers as much as anyone else. But after a century and three quarters of a steady diet of stories of larger-than-life Rangers who could do no wrong it is past time that we begin to understand these lawmen as the real men they were. Some of what they did was extraordinarily good and some extraordinarily bad. Robert Utley, who has never yet stepped back from pushing fact in the face of popular mythology, has helped us know the genuine background of Texas as few others have done.
The Best History of the Texas Rangers, Period........2007-02-18
Robert Utley shows again why he is the dean of western history with the second part of his masterful account of the Texas Rangers. While this isn't as romantically wild and woolly as the previous volume--it's inevitable, as automobiles replace horses and the solving of cases relies on more technical tools--it's still engaging and colorful. A great historian--and a great storyteller--does a magnificent job once more.
A True Master Rescues History from the Pit of Myth.......2007-02-18
Robert M. Utley follows his masterful account of the first century of the Texas Rangers, Lone Star Justice, with another tour de force, bringing the story up to date. Brilliantly written and meticulously documented, as always with this celebrated historian of the West, this book traces the transformation of a frontier peace force at the beginning of the 20th century to today's internationally recognized investigative and law-enforcement force, a small band of efficient professionals whose frontier history will always hang over them. Casting off frontier ways was not always easy, politically or professionally, as Utley clearly explains. He is not afraid to deal with the controversial aspects of his subject's history, in particular repeated charges of racism and high-handed brutality. This is no love poem to this sometimes controversial organization, as Utley takes on the negative as well as the positive, with judiciouos balance. On the whole, his judgment of the Rangers, for all the regrettable elements of their past, is favorable, and he concludes that the organization has not so much overcome its history as learned from it. A welcome corrective to the romanticizing that usually characterizes stories about the Rangers. Recommended to anyone interested in the history of Texas, the West, and law enforcement. Given that issues involving the US border with Mexico are in the forefront lately, this book provides informative background.

Gunfighters.......2007-01-16
This book is about 1/3 on old gunfighters of the old west and 2/3 on the "B" Western cowboys. It is interesting to read but you should realize it is mostly movies.
Very Disappointing Book.......2004-04-20
This is the most disappointing book I have read in a long time. There is very little about the actual guns of the gunfighters and the few facts presented are very general and broad brush. The author obviously is a fan of old Hollywood westerns as half of his "gunfighters" are in fact only Hollywood actors! He also includes several modern gun magazine writers. Worse yet, many of the noteable real western gunfighters are ignored. The editing is also poor. Several photos of the same gun appear in more than one place in the book. Spend your money elsewhere.
A wealth of hidden gun lore.......2003-08-08
The Guns Of The Gunfighters: Lawmen, Outlaws & Hollywood Cowboys by firearms historian and expert Doc O'Meara, is a meticulous and detailed survey of the weaponry carried by some of the most famous (and infamous) gunmen of the Wild West and the silver screen, including Wyatt Earp, Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers, and many, many more. Black-and-white photographs, extensive attention to detail, and a wealth of hidden gun lore make The Guns Of The Gunfighters a superb giftbook for gun buffs, Western American history enthusiasts, and those having a special interest in Hollywood portrayals of the Old West.
Cotton Candy for the soul!.......2003-04-29
This volume by noted gun writer Doc O'Meara is a fun and informative work for fans of the Westeren, Gun Buffs and anybody who enjoyed Saturday shoot em ups. The writing is bright and jaunty, like the subject matter. Well documented, and a treasure trove of beautiful photographs of the Gunfighters and their tools of the trade. A good reference volume sure to attract attention, the books suceeds on all levels.

The complete source for valid information on the USMS.......1997-12-03
Dr. Calhoun is the historian for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Ga. He is THE source for accurate historical information on US Federal Law enforcement. The Lawmen is a detailed and insightful book that portrays the story of the Marshals Service as it evolved over the years moving from cabinet to cabinet and interdicting in almost every major escalation of US evolution. The book reads like a history course offering minute details and golden tidbits of information about the deputies, the service, and their endurance over the last 200+ years. Calhoun also keeps up with more modern Marshals and describes the current status of America's "legitimately" oldest law enforcement agency. This is good reading for anyone interested in the Service.

Book Description
Who are the lawmen and who are the outlaws? ... Was there, in fact, always a distinction between officers of the law and lawbreakers in the Old West?" These are the key questions that ten well-known historians puzzle over in their revealing portraits of such legendary frontier figures as Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Jesse James, and Wild Bill Hickok. The second book in Fulcrum's Notable Westerners series, this collection of lively, well-researched biographies examines the lives of famous-and infamous-characters of the Old West.
Customer Reviews:
The Way They Really Were.......2007-03-01
This collection of mini-biographies tells the intriguing story of how late-19th lawmen - who sometimes strayed over the legal line then as they sometimes do today - dealt with Old West outlaws, colorfully characterized by one source as "that line of scum on the waves of advancing civilization."
Within 200 pages there is a chapter about each of the usual characters: Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, Pat Garret, Tom Horn, Doc Holliday, Joaquin Murrieta, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Jesse James and Pearl Hart. In each chapter are details, so far as they're known, about each characters early life and family and what they did apart from the incidents for which they're best known. I found the more mundane aspects of some of the lawmen's lives - e.g., non-law enforcement occupations, political activities - and the way they occasionally crossed paths with other famous and well known people of their era especially interesting. As for the outlaws, some were complex but most were just plain bad guys with few or no known redeeming characteristics.
The editors and the authors are all university historians who sort out as much fact as possible and don't speculate - in the manner that some current writers do to fictionalize supposed nonfiction - about unknowns or hypothesize pointlessly about the characters' psychological motives. Given that each chapter is written by a different author it is somewhat amazing how uniformly tightly and well written this book is. What a pleasure to see a book in which the editors actually... well, edit.
There are several interesting photographs of most primary characters and some secondary ones. Warning: with a few exceptions (Earp and Hickok for instance) most of them are far from the movie-star handsome images of films and TV shows about them. A 14-page appendix lists references and sources by chapter for anyone who wants to study a particular character or episode more thoroughly. While I'd have liked to have some chapters about more obscure characters, especially lawmen in regions other than the Great Plains, I suppose one reason a relatively few are so well know is because then, as now, the media only focused on and documented a small number who became anointed as "celebrities".
Highly recommended to anyone interested in the late-19th Century American West, American history in general or anyone who just wants to learn more about characters so well known - even in their own lifetimes - from popular media portrayals.
The real West by those that lived it!.......2000-01-20
Wyatt Earp, Will Bill Hickok, Pat Garrett, Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid, and Jesse James are but a few of the legends of the Old West. With Bullets and Badges they come to life and the stories are remarkable and fascinating.
History has a way of distorting the truth and legends make the truth hard to find, this book takes out the legend and myth and bring you the story of some of the most famous and infamous men and women who have ever lived/
You'll read the way that lawmen "crossed" over the line to catch the "bad" guys, See how the Tombstone really was and how Wild Bill Hickok dies playing poker. The amazing thing about this book is how easy to read it was.
The style of the author makes this book a real pleasure to read. The book cleared up many misconceptions I had about the way the old west was run and those that lived during that time. A first class job and a must have for those interested in history.
Customer Reviews:
Not up to the hype.......2007-05-02
I bought this book because the reviews were very good. Unfortunately, if you have other books to cross-reference it with, it comes up short. When it comes to the amount of information in this book, there is no comparison. However, every single thing you read must be taken with a grain of salt, because there are so many errors. It's hard to know what to believe and what to accept as simply incorrect, if you have no further source of information. There were MANY obvious errors, involving a number of the more famous people in the book, that could be discovered by simply reading another book on the same subject. Even a picture of a famous Wild Bunch member's lover is labeled as the wrong person. Another aspect of the book I found very disturbing, is Nash's consistent habit of stating pure speculation, as adamant fact. Nash has the ability to make you believe that what you are reading is the only possiblity, unless you know that the facts are otherwise. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is interested in FACTS only. Too many "facts" were either wrong or fabricated. If you are interested in learning the basics about A LOT of people, and are willing to accept that things may not be as stated, then this book is fine. If you are a serious researcher of western history, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
this has to be UNDISPUTABLY the best resource on famous Wild West Characters.......2006-07-14
anytime you here a famous character's name in a western movie, you can bet that you can go and look it up in this book, and learn everything that has been documented about them in real life. This book is incredible, and if you're a western history buff, this is the only book you need! You won't believe the things that REALLY happened in the wild west... you hear all the rumors on TV, but this book sets it all straight.
A fantastic book....must read!.......2002-09-12
This book has so many stories about outlaws and lawmen I have and haven't heard of before. It's presented so fantastic. Each individual is a story in their own right. I couldn't put down this mammoth book and you would be crazy not to order this! The portraits are nice, too.
Quantity Beats Quality.......2000-05-30
With more than 1,000 entries and 400 pictures it would be hard to complain about what is left out of this encyclopedia. That's why I couldn't pass it up when I saw it in a bookstore. Also it has an extensive bibliography I have found very useful. Those are the strong points. As I read through the entries, though, I began finding things that didn't jibe with other books I've read. For example, Nash has Belle Starr living with Cole Younger and later robbing a California prospector while Glenn Shirley's book, Belle Starr and Her Times, shows there is no evidence she did either. Nash has Jesse James riding with William Clarke Quantrill when they sacked Lawrence, Kansas while others, such as Edward Leslie in The Devil Knows How to Ride, shows that Jesse wasn't part of that raid. These are only a couple of examples but I've run across a number of others. It has forced me to use this book with historical reservations. That's why I would only recommend this encyclopedia after making the reader aware of its shortcomings.
The old west comes to life!.......2000-02-14
When I first received this book I thought it would be another book briefly talking famous "bad guys" and those who brought them to justice, I was wrong, very wrong. Jay Robert Nash is one of, if not the best, at bringing to life the Old West and those who made it come alive.
With over a 1000 entries and well over 300 photos, this book goes beyond Jesse and Frank James, The Cole-Younger gang, Billy the Kidd, Pat Garrett, Bat Masterson and The Earps. You'll read about judges, Sheriffs, outlaws and so much more.
I spent over four hours reading this book form cover to cover and every page has something new and fascinating. Facts and myths, legends and tales, it's all here and waiting for you to explore. You'll ride along with the Texas Rangers and help out the Pinkertons, and never have get dirty.
I have seen books on lawmen of the old west, and also books on outlaws of the west, for the first time you have a reference book that gives you both and at a price that makes it a great gift for anyone.
Book Description
In the 1840s, gold had officially been discovered in California, and many men made their way out West in search of riches. The early mining camps were dangerous places full of violence and crime. Law and order was needed, and the Vigilante Committee became the first organized deliverer of justice in these turbulent new towns. As more and more people headed out West, and many new towns sprang up, a more official system of law was needed. From the days of the California Gold Rush to the killing of Bill Tilghman, the last of the traditional frontier lawmen, this book discusses the men that shaped law and order in the 'Wild, Wild West'.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference for Teachers of American History.......2006-06-19
The illustrations are not going to make a great impression, especially since most of these characters were not very impressive looking. The writing style may not be considered exciting, but the author covers the best known, and some of the not so well known lawman, including judges of the time - like Roy Mean and Parker. There are other books which beat around the bush and do not give a very clear picture of what they did or what happened to them. For the American history teacher this is an excellent book to have to fill out the details missing in text books about who these lawmen were and what they did ranging from the Wild Bill Hickok to the Earps and others. The author clear shows that many of these lawmen at times were also bandits. The coverage includes the lands West of the Mississippi from Texas and the Southwest to Montana and includes coverage of some of the range wars and feuds, Indian Police, the Pinkertons and good descripitons of what the frontier towns were like. The book makes a great reference for teachers who want to add some color to that part of American history in their classes.
A superbly written work on development of policing and early law enforcement on the American frontier.......2006-01-05
A superbly written work on development of policing and early law enforcement on the American frontier, Charles M. Robinson III 's American Frontier Lawmen 1850-1930 provides the reader with a rich, colorful documentary of early frontier lawmen who delivered justice in many new Western towns. From interactions between lawmen, vigilante committees, and wealthy ranch owners, to famous gunfighters and law enforcers alike, American Frontier Lawmen 1850-1930 engagingly documents some of the most vivid of personalities, adding color drawings by Richard Hook for stronger impact.

Book Description
Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Belle Starr, Wyatt Earp, the Younger Gang, the Dalton-Doolin Gang and Bat Masterson-where does the truth end and the legend begin? Each chapter-length entry here first focuses on the known facts of the people's lives, then compares the truth to how they have been portrayed in the movies.
Book Description
From the first game wardens in the Everglades, who had to buy their own uniforms and guns, to present-day wildlife officers, who often fulfill the role of police officers, law enforcement in the wild, untamed Everglades has kept pace with changing times. You're just as likely to find today's game warden chasing escaped convicts, keeping surveillance on drug runners, or recovering wreckage from a plane crash as arresting deer, turkey, and alligator poachers. And you're more likely to encounter game wardens who are female and college educated now too. Gone are the days when game wardens were often former lawbreakers themselves and came by their jobs simply because they knew the Glades so well. Ride along on an airboat as it whooshes through sawgrass marshes. Hitch a ride on a track as it chugs and grumbles over the Glades' rough terrain. Meet the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the wildlife and natural resources in the only Everglades on earth.

Lawmen...and women...made of iron.......2000-05-09
Long after the Wild West had come under the umbrella of civilization, lawmen had yet to stop the outlaws of Florida's Everglades. Plume hunters, gator poachers, smugglers and the vilest of murderers found seclusion and concealment amid the sawgrass and reptiles of America's greatest wetland. It took a special breed of lawman to track down and arrest the bandits who ruled the Everglades. Jim Huffstodt's subject matter is history in his book, "Everglades Lawmen," but his writing style is that of a southern "yarn spinner," one who recounts the tales as an old-timer would, sitting around a campfire with group of wide-eyed children hanging onto every word. Everglades lawmen were the toughest creatures in the swamp. Otherwise they would never have survived and never would have succeeded in taming the Everglades and tormenting its outlaws. In fascinating detail and lively presentation, Huffstodt recounts the tales that trace the transition from the times when wilderness law enforcement rested in the hands of men of iron up to today when Everglades lawmen...and women...rely on science and technology to build their cases. They still are men and women made of iron. They have to be to patrol alone, at night in the swamplands where some of America's most wicked criminals have sought consealment for centuries. But today, the criminals live in fear, because they know the Everglades lawmen are lurking in the darkness, just out of sight...watching, waiting...ready to swoop down on them like red-tailed hawks upon the snakes the bandits are. Huffstodt recounts tales told by the lawmen and versions of the same stories told by the outlaws they tracked. He captures both in a beautiful, understandable style. Hats off to Jim Huffstodt and his "Everglades Lawmen."
Everglades Lawmen - True and Exciting Stories!.......2000-05-08
If you are interested in conservation and the outdoors, you'll really enjoy this book. The true tales of the people who dedicate their lives to protect our resources, are not only exciting, but served to enhance my appreciation of the jobs they do. I sent this book to my brother (an officer in Pennsylvania), to reinforce that while most calls end up as "routine", there is no such thing as a routine call. This book doesn't disappoint!
Get ready for an adventure.......2000-05-08
Everglades Lawmen tells a great story about the many and varied jobs facing today's game wardens.
The books goes into the early game wardens and the skills needed to get the job done in the "good old" days. The tragic stories of man killer alligators and the role of game wardens in protecting the species. Some great "war stories" about chasing and catching some interesting and colorful poachers.
Huffstodt does a great job telling about the many dangers facing today's game warden which the majority of the public has no idea about.
Highly recommended to anyone who cares about the natural resources left and what is needed to protect them.
Everglades Lawmen - Excitement in the Wind.......2000-05-03
Mr. Huffstodt did an excellent job of imparting to the reader the feel of the Everglades and the dedication necessary to protect the wildlife of this region. One could almost feel the wind blowing in your face as you travel by airboat across the pages of Everglades Lawmen. Thanks for a great read and I am looking forward to the next book by the author.
A Major's Perspective.......2000-05-01
I found "Everglades Lawmen" to be great reading. A must for every Game Warden and outdoor enthusiast. I was impressed with the cohesive manner in which the author was able to bring the many stories together and make the book so interesting. Having been familiar with many of the events depicted in the book, it is very obvious that the author did his homework. I highly recommend it to readers of all ages and interests. It's what Game Wardens do every day and what they all take for granted, but most people in our society never hear about.
