Book Description
This diligently documented book shows that neither the internment of ethnic Japanese--not to mention ethnic Germans and Italians--nor the relocation and evacuation of Japanese Americans from the West Coast were the result of war hysteria or race prejudice as historians have taught us.
Customer Reviews:
Refuted by Ken Burns' "The War".......2007-10-07
Ken Burns' PBS production, "The War", absolutely refutes this garbage. Malkin is repugnant and ridiculous. I know Japanese Americans whose families experienced this violation of the Constitution (such as "due process"). No, I did not buy this diatribe and nonsense; I read portions of it at the bookstore because good, reasonable and intelligent people should not patronize seriously flawed authors, such as Malkin, Ann Coulter, David Horowitz et al with their hatred and outrageous invectives. One should NOT ever pay attention to her opinion. She has lost all credibility.
Bigotry Sells.......2007-10-07
Michelle Malkin conducted absolutely no scholarly research in the writing of this ridiculous book. She argued that Japan controlled the entire Pacific Ocean, maintained a vast network of spies in the US, and planned to invade the West Coast. Through subterfuge and falsification of information, she thus concluded that internment camps were not morally reprehensible because they were of military necessity and because, in her mind, racism did not exist during the 1940s.
Fortunately, Eric Muller, a law professor at UNC -- Chapel Hill, revealed that Malkin's arguments were entirely unsubstantiated and willfully falsified. As historian Greg Robinson observed, "there were no reports of sabotage or espionage" following Pearl Harbor or before Japanese-Americans were unlawfully imprisoned. Allied forces maintained a Germany-first strategy because they considered Japan to be a lesser threat, in part because it did not have absolute control of the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, internment camps were established in June 1942, after the Battle of Midway, in which Japan's defeat greatly diminished its threat to the US mainland.
Despite the great deal of criticism she received, Malkin refused to budge from her position that MAGIC cables established the military necessity of internment camps. She underscored how important MAGIC was to her argument by dedicating her book to David Lowman, whose "research" on MAGIC she borrowed extensively from. However, James C. McNaughton, Command Historian of the US Army, Pacific, declared that Lowman's work on MAGIC to be of no merit and dismissed Lowman's "polemics ... as symptomatic of the lingering bitterness stemming from Pearl Harbor and the emotions raised by apologies and compensation."
Even the Historians' Committee for Fairness proved that Malkin's book represented "a blatant violation of professional standards of objectivity" -- "decades of scholarly research, including works by the official historian of the US Army" have contradicted every one of her intellectually dishonest claims. Following a report by the US government Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, President Reagan authorized that compensation be paid because the denial of civil rights to Japanese-Americans had been "motivated by racism" instead of veritable military concerns. As the noted biographer Jean Edward Smith pointed out, during their internment, Japanese-Americans lost more than $400 million from 1942 to 1945, a sum when adjusted for inflation equated to almost $5 billion. These financial losses were never fully or adequately recouped.
Lastly, it should be noted that the segregated Japanese-American 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team became the most highly decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US Army. When the European Theatre finally ended, the 100th/442nd had received 7 Presidential Unit Citations, and its members were awarded numerous decorations for valor and competence, including 21 Medals of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 4,000 Bronze Stars, and 9,486 Purple Hearts. Their sacrifice was astounding because they suffered a casualty rate of 314 percent, which meant, on average, every man was injured more than three times.
About time!.......2007-08-29
Take an unpopular (conservative) stance on this issue and you are sure to be villified! In the context of the times, our government's response to the unprovoked sneak attack of Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Phillipines was absolutely correct. The Japanese government refuses to this day to acknowledge many of the unspeakable atrocities that were committed by its soldiers during the war. The tentacles of its spy rings reached far and deep into this country. Good job Michelle!
To Protect a Nation.......2007-08-06
Meticulously researched, well-organized, logically presented. In order to protect a nation the measures taken must be sufficient to address the threat. Mistakes will be made. Nothing is perfect. If the mistakes occur on the side of protecting too much, the nation stands a chance of survival. If the mistakes are made on the side of not protecting enough the nation will perish. There is no such thing as "just the right amount." (When you have bacterial pneumonia and the doctor prescribes an antibiotic, do you want him to prescribe the minimum strength or the maximum? Do you stop taking the antibiotic as soon as your symptoms are gone, or do you finish the medication even after you are asymptomatic? Try stopping the medicine too soon and see what happens.) If it makes a nation safer to round up a large group of people who fit the enemy profile when the enemy threat is imminent then profiling is good, racial or otherwise. If you can't accept this then let's just ignore the borders, give everyone the benefit of doubt and we'll see who you blame the next time people who share appearance, enthicity and religion fly a jetliner into a city.
You Cant Handle The Truth.......2007-07-17
Michelle Malkin gives the facts and nothing but the facts. You will be surprised at what has been kept out of our history books and why.As michelle said in the book,to forget the past is dangerous but to fabricate the past is a much bigger sin.

Book Description
The vast wooden disk known as King Arthur's Round Table has hung on the wall of the great Hall of Winchester Castle for six hundred years. But what is it? Was it ever a table? When was it made? Why is it hanging on the wall? When was it painted with the famous image it now bears? And why at Winchester? In 1976 the Round Table was taken down from the wall and thoroughly examined by a team of historians and scientists assembled by Martin Biddle, and its history began to emerge. Built in the reign of Edward I, it was probably the centrepiece of a feast held at Winchester after a forgotten tournament celebrating marriage plans for the king's children; Edward III, founder of the Order of the Garter, had the top hung up in the castle hall as a symbol of his interest in the chivalric idea of the company of Arthur's Round Table; Henry VIII had it painted and used the figure of Arthur to support his claim to be arbiter of European power. This most enigmatic of objects at last yields up these and other secrets to scientific analysis and historical deduction. MARTIN BIDDLE is Astor Senior Research Fellow at Hertford College and Professor of Medieval Archaeology in the University of Oxford. Contributors: JOHN V. FLEMING, SIMON JERVIS, BEATRICE CLAYRE, ROGER DAVEY, MICHAEL MORRIS, CECIL HEWETT, G.R. COLEMAN, SUSAN J. READ, BRIAN J. HEARD, A.C. BAREFOOT, DAVID HADDON-REECE, R.L. Book Description
The focus of this book is the tank battles fought during the opening phase of the war in North Africa. What really happened during the engagements? How were the tanks fought? What were their strengths and weaknesses? Not simplified generalities, but substantive, basic facts gleaned from searching for details in the surviving original records. The accounts of each battle are excerpted from the original reports written by the participants directly after each engagement. To understand the basis for the outcome of the battles, it is necessary to possess a basic understanding of the capabilities of each type of tank, its opponents, and how they were tactically employed. The first five chapters in this volume provide descriptions and technical attributes of the British, German, and Italian tanks and anti-tank guns along with the tactical doctrine from the period. Chapters six through eleven contain the details of the tank battles fought in North Africa during the period from February 1941 to June 1941. Translated excerpts from the Deutsches Afrikakorps war diary are used as a backdrop to provide a chronological guide as events progressed. An interesting feature from this war diary was the brief daily weather report revealing how hot it was and when sand storms occurred. Details on the actions in the tank battles are taken from after-action-accounts written directly after the engagements, enhanced by excerpts from war diaries of the armoured units involved to fill in the preliminary moves, buildup of strength, combat losses, and details on the actions that weren't contained in the after-action-reports. This book is compiled from the results of digging through original records for over thirty years in an attempt to find data that would aid in assessing and understanding the tank battles that took place in North Africa. Tom Jentz is also the author of Panzertruppen 1933-1942, and Panzertruppen 1943-1945 (both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 100 b/w photographs, 30 line drawings, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful study........2007-01-12
This book is a wonderful study about the battl in North Africa in the first 6 month of 1941. You must have it at home!
Italians revenge.......2003-01-18
As all the Jents books, also this one is dedicated to the Panzertruppen and his day by day analysis of the single fighting is an inestimable fount for the ones really interested in understand the peculiar problems of the tank combat in the desert and, more general, on flat lands.
The author introduce the reader with the complete list of the italian, british and german tanks operating on the theatre and reporting not only the tanks datas but also the ones of the guns and the kills capabilities of all them explaining why the italian army, supported by no more than 100 german tanks was able to keep the entire british army at bay for three years.
Inside this book you'll find tactics notes, use of formation and how not to use the radio in combat, how to plain a tactical operation and how to plain a complete failure overstimating the enemy and completely forgotting the Von Moeltke lessons about the uncertain nature of the battlefield and the strange enemy use to have its own plans...
If you are interested about the tank warfare and the desert one, you must have this book
A Gold Mine for Wargamers.......2002-08-30
This is precisely the sort of work which wargamers long for, but never find. It is exhaustively researched and clearly presented, and chock-full of detail on equipment and tactics. If you are interested in Advanced Squad Leader, Advanced Tobruk, Panzer Grenadier Afrika Korps, or similar simulations, you will be delighted with this. It's also filled with clear, excellent photographs, maps, and charts.
Everything to do with early N.Africa Tank battles.......2002-03-10
This book is made of very high quality paper and hardcover. It is very easy and entertaining to read. It covers the early battle actions from February 1941-June 1941. The book has all the data on the tanks (even to the steel specifications of each armour plate), all the guns penetration and accuracy data tables & gunners aim diagrams for how the Germans should fire at Matilda tanks!) Jentz uses original sources for all his information not others work.
There are many official after action reports included as to the effectiveness of the tanks both in reliability and fighting performance. Also the official recommended tactics for battle are given.
Most battles are covered with tactical movements and a map showing them, also battle reports and at the end a summary of the tactics each side used and what conclusions can be made.
The B/W plates are of very clear reproduction and show many details not normally visible like the extra armour plates added to early Pz4D. The Matilda is definately the "star" of this book but there is still a full appeciation of the Italian tanks and guns.
This book covers next to everything those interested in early North Africa Tank battles & tanks could want to know. Like the other reviewer I am eagerly waiting the next 2? books in this series!!
Absolute Necessity for any Military Enthusiast.......2001-07-29
This work is an absolute necessity for anyone interested in the North African campaign. It is not a story or an account of battles, rather, it is a technical manual regarding the forces involved in the campaign. Mr. Jentz is meticulous in his research of the primary historical documents and does an excellent job of organizing this mass of material. Of greatest interest to me personally is the tactical treatment of the battles. While I possess numerous works on this campaign, I have never seen such analyses published until now. Additionally, the author conducts an in-depth analysis of the equipment utilized by the Germans, British, and Italians. As a result, he produces an objective account of the effectiveness of the tanks, artillery, and other weapons utilized in North Africa. The author also includes excellent orders-of-battle of the various units.
Of course, no work is ever perfect. If I had to mention some negatives of the book, I would point out that the maps should be colorized. While useful, these would have been improved with color renditions of the various forces, instead of the black-and-white that is used in the book. Trying to discern the dynamics of the battle was made more difficult since all of the arrows were in black ink.
In sum, this book is an excellent addition to any military library. It covers areas previously untouched and makes a valuable contribution to the field. I highly recommend this work and eagerly await the next two promised volumes that will comprise the whole of the North African campaign.

LookingThe Way of KIng Arthur.......2004-09-29
Though the book provides an intresting look at ideas concerning Arthur and his possible origins it provides no expansion on therories already proposed by other historians. I found the Chapters on the Medieval mindset about Arthur fascinating but over all there was no definite conclusions. The book lacks a cohesive form and near the end is nearly entirely given to speculative archeology. Finishing up with an amazingly lacking Bibliography the book provides very little in the way of expanding the field of history. It is best left to the amature historian or curious lay person.
Simple but well done.......2004-09-23
In this book the author searches for the beginnings of the King Arthur legend and trys to determine if there is any actual historical basis for the character of Arthur himself. The book is short - only a bit more than 100 pages and my copy is in what looks to be 14 point type - so BIG PRINT. It reads VERY fast. I finished it on a flight from Minneapolis to Detroit with time to spare.
I'm a HUGE King Arthur fan and I found myself very intrigued. However, don't let this be your only reference into the legend - there are many many versions of the legend (as the author freely admits). If you have read an Arthurian legend or two and wonder about the history of the tale - this will quickly turn you onto other sources for further research. If you are well versed in the legend already - look for something more in-depth. This is really for an Arthurian beginner.
A King who sought peace for his people.......2004-07-19
This beautiful and eloquent search for the kernel of truth that gave birth to the glorious legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is probably the finest and most cogent account available.
Hibbert understands two elements needed to make sense of the Arthurian legend -- the factual basis of history, and the enduring significance of what develops when fact grows into an expression of the ideals of a people. Originally published in 1969, this somewhat typographically sloppy edition looks to have been hastily re-issued to cash in on the publicity for the much derided 2004 film version of King Arthur.
"The search for the man himself has become a continuing quest for what lies hidden in the hearts of all men," writes Hibbert, the perfect guide to legend and fact. It's a concise book, less time to read than attending the film, but of far more value and meaning.
His closing tribute is to T. H. White's masterful "Once and Future King", in which King Arthur was "not a distressed Briton hopping about in a suit of woad in the fifth century" but a true knight with "an open face, with kind eyes and a reliable or faithful expression, as though he was a good learner who enjoyed being alive . . . . ." Like White, he fully understands the significance of the legend.
So, who was Arthur? Well, legends are expressions of the ideals a society want to attain. In today's world, President George Bush wants to be "a war president." In contrast, King Arthur was a leader who defeated the ruthless terrorists of his time and sought to be known as a man who brought peace to the English people. The Round Table was an expression of the equality of all who upheld, in the words of White, "the idea that force ought to be used, if it is used at all, on behalf of justice, not on its own account."
Hibbert leaves no doubt that a real Arthur once existed, but he is not so foolish as to proclaim any specific legend or locale as the true Camelot or any specific man as the original Arthur. He carefully illustrates how church and civil authorities have used the legend to bolster their own selfish causes. It is a marvelous exercise in the study and application of history, illustrating the contrast between legend, fact and what we know to be true. After reading this book, even the movie may make sense as more than a woad and weird action adventure.
"But the quest for Arthur of Britain never can destroy the beauty of the works that his legend has inspired or the fascination of the legend itself," Hibbert writes. This book is a perfect introduction to those ideas and ideals. You won't do better, even though you may later plunge into the wonderful depth and detail of other accounts of the Arthurian legend.
It is a great book. Anyone interested in anything from early England to Camelot will love it.
Book Description
This remarkable book, written by former slave David F. Dorr, published in the mid-nineteenth century and only recently rediscovered, is an uncommon travel narrative. In the 1850s Dorr accompanied Louisiana plantation owner Cornelius Fellowes on a tour of the world's major cities, with the promise that when they returned to the United States, Dorr would be given his freedom. When that promise was broken, Dorr escaped to Ohio and wrote of his experiences in A Colored Man Round the World.
Malini Johar Schueller has edited and annotated the 1858 text and added a critical introduction that provides a useful context for understanding and appreciating this important but heretofore neglected document. Her edition of A Colored Man Round the World provides a fascinating account of Dorr's negotiation of the conflicting roles of slave versus man, taking into account all of the racial complexities that existed at the time. As a traveler abroad, Dorr claimed an American selfhood that allowed him mobility in Europe, and he benefited from the privileges accorded American "Orientalists" venturing in the near East. However, any empowerment that Dorr experienced while a tourist vanished upon his return to America.
The book will be welcomed for the rare perspective it provides of the mid-nineteenth century, through the eyes of an African-American slave and for the light it casts on world and U.S. history as well as on questions of racial and national identity.
Malini Johar Schueller is Professor of English, University of Florida.
Book Description
"The best sort of popular military history."--Times Literary Supplement. "...will be referred to again and again."--Air Classics. Those who flew the bombing missions from British airfields in World War Two lived through an utterly unique experience, conducting an epic campaign that raged day and night. A remarkable testimony to this turbulent time--and what it felt like to be part of that struggle--features contemporary, personal documents from English and American flight crews, as well as over 160 unforgettable images from during and after the war. The British RAF Bomber Command carried out sustained nighttime raids on Germany, inflicting wide pattern destruction, while America's fledgling 8th Air Force successfully took on the challenge of precision daylight bombing--at a huge cost of lives and equipment. Poignant and significant.
Customer Reviews:
Puts You In the Aircraft along with the Bomber Crews.......2006-07-06
I am frankly in awe of the men who made up the aircrew of the strategic bombing compaign, both of RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF. These men flew on dangerous raids night-after-night or day-after-day, respectively, and took the war into the heart of Nazi Germany, particularly at a time when the Allies were hard-pressed and Germany controlled much of the continent of Europe.
This book is designed to give the reader a feel for all aspects of the life of these aircrew, from their lives at the bases, to how they viewed their aircraft and equipment and finally what it was like to fly the missions from the point-of-view of the different jobs of the aircrew. The book also describes the dedicated work of the ground crews that kept the planes flying, what happened to men who cracked under the strain, and how the British and Americans differed in their approaches to running an Air Force. The book is of a "coffee-table" style, with lush color photographs, but there is a lot of meat in the substance.
Special "treats" include a photo of screen star Jimmy Stewart revisiting in the 1980's the airfield where he served as Operations Officer, and a transcript of the famous broadcast legendary CBS newsman Edward R Murrow made describing the mission he flew with Bomber Command against Berlin at the time when the aircrews were suffering significant casualties.
In summary, this book is a fitting tribute to those thousands of young men who sacrificed so much in the skies over Germany to contribute to the victory over tyranny.

Book Description
The recently concluded Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) will undoubtedly lead to a fundamental transformation of the world trading system as an instrument of a global economy. In Traders in a Brave New World, Ernest H. Preeg, a distinguished former U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator, presents a blow-by-blow account of the Uruguay Round, an examination of the historical context in which it took place, and an insider's assessment of the agreement's future impact on the international trading system.
Preeg places the Uruguay Round in the broader context of global politics and economics, showing how changes in the world order—from the collapse of communism to dramatic economic reforms in developing countries—influenced both the topics of negotiations and their outcome. He then assesses the final GATT agreement as a case study in international negotiations and evaluates its probable effects on income and trade.
Finally, Preeg looks to the short- and long-term issues confronting future trade-policy negotiators. He shows that the international trade agenda will consist of three evolving types of agreement—further multilateral commitments, regional free-trade agreements, and selective bilateral accords. Going to the heart of current debates on the "new world order," an important final chapter evaluates the political and economic relationships that will result from the international trading system.
