5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-10

This book has revolutionized my teaching procedures. Bean shows us how to be more effective teachers without adding to the time we spend prepping and grading. The students are more engaged and writing better essays, and I am spending the same or less time preparing and grading. There are tips on everything from in-class exercises to constructing formal writing assignments. I recommend it to anyone teaching composition or any class with a critical thinking/writing component.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice for the college teacher.......2004-08-22

Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it. Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams. Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented. A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Resource.......2002-06-20

John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses.

Bean blends relevant research and studies to explain and justify what works and what fizzles. His text offers strategies and assignments - from short, informal writings to involved research projects. His work considers learning styles - (students and instructors). The author models rich critical thinking and writing - the discourse allows learners to make their own connections and discoveries (while absorbing the valuable resources and information provided) Readers, like students engage in the journey of sense-making.

In sum, this is not just a book of potential exercies - it is a rich resource for instructors grappling with issues of assessment, critiquing, and the fear of grading overload. These topics and more provided me with some wonderful "aha" moments.

It's the "aha"s that spark my spirit of inquiry - and this is what I strive to share with students.

5 out of 5 stars insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools.......1999-01-08

Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches to teaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects. Anyone who values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will find good value in Bean's text.

Book Description

What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey?. Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface—a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character—and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you.

In this practical and amusing guide to literature, Thomas C. Foster shows how easy and gratifying it is to unlock those hidden truths, and to discover a world where a road leads to a quest; a shared meal may signify a communion; and rain, whether cleansing or destructive, is never just rain. Ranging from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and form, How to Read Literature Like a Professor is the perfect companion for making your reading experience more enriching, satisfying, and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Every High School Lit Teacher Should Read this Book!.......2007-08-16

Heard about this book in an AP class for teachers. They were right. It's great. I'd love to require my high school students get a copy-but funding would be a problem.

4 out of 5 stars A book by any other name.......2007-08-06

After reading a certain review here I felt I must post. This book is not for English majors only. This book will open a reader's eyes to what is hidden within leterature. It gave me fresh insight into the background and symbols I had not even thought of before and allowed my reading to be what it was meant to be. Yes, Mr. Foster does enjoy refering to his favorite authors for clarity on a theme or idea he has presented, however, this is not a flaw but a preperation to lay a solid foundation in what the reader will need for their goal. The beauty of this book is in its goal. This book was written so that we can learn with our eyes open and our minds ready to recieve whatever an author might throw at us. I had my "ticket punched" in a lit. class but I got more from this book. Thanks Professor Foster.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone.......2007-05-12

I found this book in a catalog that was sent to me at work. As I researched more about this book, I found out that many teachers across the country have thier students read it. As a high school English teacher and someone who rushed through thier English lit. degree, I was instatnly hooked. During our state testing, I have been reading it and chuckled out loud at it. It is well written and funny. It is hard to believe that you are actually learning as you read.

5 out of 5 stars All literature should be taught this way.......2007-03-25

This book asks of literature, "What's going on here?" and of authors, "How did you do that?" Then it supplies clear, understandable answers that surprise and enlighten and delight.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining introduction..........2007-01-16

An easy read and a nice introduction (or reminder to those who've been out of college a while) what goes into reading and appreciating great literature. People in college or who remember their college English lit classes vividly will find it a bit too beginner-level. I also thought the prose sometimes was a bit too informal and chatty. Still, I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to Break Your Writer's Block!.......2005-10-06

If you are writing a dissertation, thesis, or engaged in other regular academic (or other writing) writing this book is a must read. Boice's sage advice is based on years of experience with and (yes, empirical evidence) research on helping academicians produce necessary writing -- regularly. He includes self-assessment questionnaire on writer's block that enables you to target your areas of strength and weakness so you can focus on exactly the areas that hinder your progress. The book is short (180 pp including excellent anotated bibliography). He answers the agonizing questions about why you don't write when you want to and desperately need to write. He discusses, in clear, concise detail, the phenomenology of writing problems, while providing both short- and long-term strategies for ensuring writing productivity that are actually do-able. His writing style is easy, conversational and reassuring. He takes you through his actual consultation process, session by session (a rare insight and a true bargin). Simply stated, the book is just great.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To A Personal Writing Coach.......2005-04-14

After my third client remarked, "the Boice book is what got me through my dissertation," I knew I had to read Professors As Writers. As an academic coach, I work with professors by telephone to accelerate their rate of writing and publishing. In this guide, Boise gives detailed suggestions on how to manage the primary challenge faced by my clients - a lack of external structure to support regular writing. He also addresses the crucial (but often overlooked) issue of how to build social support for academic writing and publishing. Academics who have wished their appointments came with a set of clear instructions on how to write easily and productively will appreciate what Boise offers in this book.

5 out of 5 stars ALL writers (or potential writers) should read this book!.......2003-08-22

This book is fantastic. Just when I thought I'd read it all, I stumbled across this book while surfing the Internet. It is by far the best book I've ever come across to help someone overcome procrastination or any other writing "problem."

The first chapter is a bit overly academic in tone, but the rest is down-to-earth. He does an exceptional job discussing free-writing and clustering; and then he goes on to give further advice regarding how to manage your social and environmental situation to encourage your productivity. His advice works very well -- and it is not just for academic writers.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for struggling academic writers.......2003-04-27

This is one of the best books out there for academics who need help getting themselves to write. I'm a clinical psychologist who coaches faculty, post-docs and grad students, and this is one of the first books I recommend. Almost all of Boice's prolific body of work is useful - and his suggestions, both in books and journal articles, are backed up by research - this makes his contributions unique in the genre of self-help books for academics.

5 out of 5 stars Advice that really works.......2001-12-17

Face it, all of us academics would like to think that someday a muse will descend upon us and infuse us with the capability to write the great work in our field without self-doubt, procrastination, etc. Boice shows empirical evidence that demonstrates these hopes are in vain (which is no big surprise to anyone), but even better, he provides the solution: writing is like physical exercise--the more you do it, the easier and more pleasant it becomes--if you write a little bit every day, even if you think it's pointless, at the end of a six month period, you will have 150 pages of writing to edit. It makes sense and it works. He even talks about reasons that people want to resist this truth, and how to trick yourself out of your writer's block. Grad students especially should benefit from the strategies he suggests.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book as a supplement to your textbook.......2004-07-23

Other than a few typos, this book is awesome. I learn the basic concepts from this book, and then do the problems in my textbook. This book has helped me when my professor couldn't/wouldn't. You cannot learn physics from this book only, but it is an excellent addition to any textbook.

3 out of 5 stars Decent book - many errors.......2000-07-06

This book is a decent book for those being taking a freshman physics course for non-majors. This is a good supplement to a calculus based physics textbook.

4 out of 5 stars typographical errors.......2000-03-08

it's a good book, it helped a great deal. I wish time was taken to correct typographical errors. I lost valuable time that could have been used to study.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful, recommend.......2000-01-17

this is a very good book except there are some mistakes(but the mistakes are easily found and corrected by yourself). This book gives you how to attack problems in a very organized manner even though the problems are not so difficult. I came to be able to solve more challenging problems in a different book after solving the easy but organized ones in this book. I recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Book If You Need Help with Physics.......2000-01-17

Beginning with the "How To Use This Book" and "How To Excel in Your Physics Course", (especially the latter) and throughout its pages, this is, without a doubt in this readers opinion, the very best book on the subject I have found to date (And I have many). It puts you through the paces. If you want to know this subject and excel in it, these authors have placed before you the practice you will need. I recommend this book highly for your first experiences in this subject. Starting with the mathematical background required; then on to Classical through Special Relativity. It covers each and every topic, in a clear, concise method that enhances learning and improves retention greatly in each and every area. It's a great reference to have on the shelf. EXCELLENT! My thanks to the authors. Your book has helped me much more than I ever expected.

Book Description

A revealing look at the college freshman experience, from an insiderÂ's point of view

After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behavior—eating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussions—made her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Required Reading for University Administration and Parents.......2007-10-09

Rebeka Nathan's anthropological account of campus life at the anonymous "AnyU" public university should be read by every professor, university administrator, or parent of a college student. As Nathan says, "Most students have no understanding of...how the university actually functions," while professors "have no idea what a dorm room looks like,...or the cost of books, tuition and housing." Her assessment of what's wrong (students are working more nowadays, and "diversity" is nothing more than a buzzword) are dead-on.

5 out of 5 stars College freshman today!.......2007-09-18

Although this book was a mandatory assignment in a graduate course, it was a great read. The author's decision to transform from a professor to student was a brilliant idea to uncover the truths of college freshman. Although her methods raise some ethical flags, her discoveries of what goes on in the dorms, class and outside of class are amazingly true. Her discoveries at AnyU not only premise on this campus, but so many others.

In addition, so many professors today make unrealistic demands on college students. For once, a professor was able to understand what it is like to be a freshman and adapt to the needs of her students after this research. In addition, the author was able to express her ideas and those of others on academic integrity, meaningful courses, international students, learning and campus community.

The author's detailed descriptions of her personal experiences intrigued me every step of the way. I would definitely recommend anyone, student, parent or professor to read this book. Very insightful and productive research!

4 out of 5 stars Things look better when you're there.......2007-07-16

Shows what an older person in her 50s can get out of the college atmosphere by registering as a real full-time student. This anthropologist learned how younger students behave in the dorms, in the hall discussions, and what they really think of their teachers and of one another. The new (but somewhat older freshman) did not reveal who she really was and went along with the students in what they did or said. Not until the very end does she tell who she is; surprise and understanding are the remarks she heard, but retributions.

Quite an open book, like Augustine's Confessions (almost) and Rousseau's of the same title. It's a good read no matter what your age/sex/education.

1 out of 5 stars Clueless.......2007-07-03

I'm around the author's age (50) and I actually went back to college to study, not to spy on people. Just through casual conversations I know 100x more than I learned from this book. You know, she has revelations like today's students have cell phones instead of rotary dial phones, and some have been known to actually drink alcohol a day or two before reaching age 21. (I'm being sarcastic.)
She didn't seem to interact much with students. This is a dry, dull, uninteresting book with little useful information and is more like a community college paper than a serious study.

4 out of 5 stars Informative to both the professor and the student.......2007-06-09

I found this book, this account of re-entering college to study the student, insightful. It brought back memories of my undergraduate days, though I did not go to a large public university like the one in the book. This fact leads me to disagree about with the author as to the state of "community" in the undergraduate life. The small, private school that I attended was a Christian college. In having this affiliation, it gave every student a connection to every other student, and this lead to more community than I was portrayed in the book. I am not suggesting that every college and university in the country become Christian, just that having another (or at least one) thread that ties all the students together did more for community than policy could. We regularly had meetings, floor activities, and group meals that were attended by the vast majority of the dorm/floor. In sharing another bond, we were more willing to share other things, which is something to think about at least.

I was surprised to learn that cheating was so prevalent in universities, and in student life. It was facts like this, and others that the author peppered throughout her narrative that I found, while not altogether new, useful and interesting. I was especially interested in the final chapter, which in the paperback edition was a discussion of ethics. I found the rules, both institutionally and self imposed to be both pleasing (that the research wasn't "compromised") and frustrating (that I couldn't get the full story - not that I wanted it, just that I couldn't get it). As a future researcher myself, albeit with molecules not humans, the chapter brought up many points to think about.

All in all, the book was worth reading, and was loaded with information I am sure I will make use of as I teach my own classes.

I found this book very interesting and helpful regarding some health problems I was having. Makes sense to me. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for total Health.......2007-09-01

This book along with my Doctor saved my life! My total cholesterol was 293 and it is now at 152. My triglyceride level went from 625 down to 230 and is still improving. The quiz section in this book is right on. It fit myself and my sister to a "T". If you are serious about feeling younger and improving your all around health this is the book.Check out the "Younger You" book also.

5 out of 5 stars Made a huge difference in my health.......2007-05-22

I found this book easy to read even though I didn't choose to slog through it all. The diagnostic questionnaires are understandable and simple to use.

Like "A Reader," I thought Braverman was recommending a lot of pills and I've been trying to REDUCE my supplements. But I felt ill enough (and monied enough) to try his regimen. Within a week I felt more cheerful, alert, resilient, and relaxed--a remarkable combination of effects. I've been sleeping well and waking up refreshed. My knees and hips don't ache. It's pretty amazing.

I wish I'd had access to this information when I was struggling with clinical depression several years ago. It might have helped me avoid taking some or all of the pharmaceuticals that kept me afloat.

While this approach may not be everyone's cup of tea, the book is certainly worth reading. If you've read far enough to get to this/my review, I'd suggest that you read it: The Universe may be trying to tell you something...

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a cause of unexplained health or behavior problems.

When the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary put out a call during the late 19th century pleading for "men of letters" to provide help with their mammoth undertaking, hundreds of responses came forth. Some helpers, like Dr. W.C. Minor, provided literally thousands of entries to the editors. But Minor, an American expatriate in England and a Civil War veteran, was actually a certified lunatic who turned in his dictionary entries from the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Simon Winchester has produced a mesmerizing coda to the deeply troubled Minor's life, a life that in one sense began with the senseless murder of an innocent British brewery worker that the deluded Minor believed was an assassin sent by one of his numerous "enemies."

Winchester also paints a rich portrait of the OED's leading light, Professor James Murray, who spent more than 40 years of his life on a project he would not see completed in his lifetime. Winchester traces the origins of the drive to create a "Big Dictionary" down through Murray and far back into the past; the result is a fascinating compact history of the English language (albeit admittedly more interesting to linguistics enthusiasts than historians or true crime buffs). That Murray and Minor, whose lives took such wildly disparate turns yet were united in their fierce love of language, were able to view one another as peers and foster a warm friendship is just one of the delicately turned subplots of this compelling book. --Tjames Madison

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

The compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary, 70 years in the making, was an intellectually heroic feat with a twist worthy of the greatest mystery fiction: one of its most valuable contributors was a criminally insane American physician, locked up in an English asylum for murder. British stage actor Simon Jones leads us through this uncommon meeting of minds (the other belonging to self-educated dictionary editor James Murray) at full gallop. Ultimately, it's hard to say which is more remarkable: the facts of this amazingly well-researched story, or the sound of author Simon Winchester's erudite prose. Jones's reading smoothly transports listeners to the 19th century, reminding us why so many brilliant people obsessively set out to catalogue the English language. This unabridged version contains an interview between Winchester and John Simpson, editor of the Oxford dictionary. (Running time: 6.5 hours, 6 cassettes) --Lou Schuler

Book Description

The Professor and the Madman, masterfully researched and eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history. The compilation of the OED began in 1857, it was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. When the committee insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was also an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but cannot match its own hype.......2007-09-10

I think that I could've really enjoyed this book on its own merits had the author not continued to insist throughout that the story was horrifying, amazing, shocking, thrilling, electrifying, and tragic by turns. Rarely can these "sensationalist histories" live up to their own hype. I found the book a fascinating look into the development of the OED with the bonus of the intriguing back story of one its most unusual volunteer contributors. Isn't that good enough? Why must everything be oversold? Note to the publisher: Next time undersell, over-deliver.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly absorbing.......2007-08-28

Locked inside the compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary is an astonishing, bizarre story poignantly told in The Professor and the Madman. Well written, this disturbing story flows easily, holding the reader's interest to the end, even through the definitions!

After reading this book I have also gained a new appreciation for the beloved dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Sensationalized Version of a Gripping History.......2007-08-13

The Professor and the Madman is the yellow journalism version of the history of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), Sir James Murray, Dr. William Chester Minor, the treatment of the criminally insane during the Victorian period. I was particularly offended by the overly graphic details of Dr. Minor's self-mutilation (if you don't have a strong stomach, skip that section) and playing up of the fictionalized (and often repeated as fact) version of how Sir James and Dr. Minor first met. If the story weren't so interesting, I would encourage you to avoid the book.

Writing the first edition of the OED took 70 years and employed an unusual organizational method that has since become popular for monumental knowledge tasks -- relying on volunteers to do the bulk of the work of finding quotations that use each word in different ways over time. As someone who has always admired the OED, I enjoyed learning more about the process involved in its development. Unfortunately, that material is scattered throughout the book rather than concentrated where you can find it for a brief read through. The examples are good, however, if the material is needlessly diluted.

Thinking about that monumental effort will give you just the right foundation for appreciating how mental illness can affect parts of one's faculties while leaving others undisturbed, as the paranoid Dr. Minor employed his extensive free time in the Broadmoor Asylum for Criminally Insane and personal wealth to become of the most organized and helpful contributors to the OED.

Dr. Minor's story is the actual focus of the book. Unless you are quite interested in ironies, mental illness, and how the Victorians treated the criminally insane, you will probably find this book has more of Dr. Minor than you really care to know. It's a tragic story, but not one that I would have sought to read if the OED development process material hadn't been in the book. As background for that comment, you should know that I have a strong interest in criminal insanity and wrote my law school thesis on the subject. The book tells its story to make you feel the pain of being Dr. Minor quite well, but The Madman and the Professor won't advance your knowledge of mental illness or legal concepts of responsibility very much.

I was attracted to this book in part due to my work in leading the 400 Year Project, seeking ways to make improvements in everyone's lives at 20 times the normal rate between 2015 and 2035. I came away impressed that just a few people can make a remarkable contribution to an all-but-impossible project. I will redouble my efforts to locate such people for the 400 Year Project.

Tackle the impossible to find out what you can really do!

3 out of 5 stars Slow.......2007-07-11

I did like this book and would have given it 3.5 stars is I could. The history was interesting and easy to get through, even for a casual reader of histories such as myself. However, for some reason I felt like I was dragging myself through parts. I am unable to put my finger on it, but some parts were just really slow for me. I would recomend that you read this book if for no reason than it is full of interesting facts that may come in handy at a cocktail party. In all seriousness, I did like it but read it on vacation so you can cruise through the slow parts.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A MUST-READ.......2007-03-18

IF YOU ARE SOMEWHAT INTERESTED IN MENTAL ILLNESS AND NON-FICTION, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. FROM THE OPENING LINES TO THE END OF THE BOOK, THIS TRUE STORY WILL HAVE YOU TURNING PAGES. THE TITLE IS SOMEWHAT MISLEADING BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY THINK "SO WHAT" ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE OXFORD DICTIONARY. BUT DO NOT LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU. THIS IS A FASCINATING STORY FROM THE 1800'S ABOUT PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA, BRILLIANT MINDS AND WRITING OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DICTIONARY OF ALL TIMES. THIS BOOK IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not as much as other Sum and Substance series.......2007-10-17

I like this CD a lot. It's great for reviewing during my commute to and from law school. However, it's not as engaging as other Sum and Substance cds. It's pretty dry and the guy does not go in the best order. Also, for some reason the sections are not as broken up as on other series which makes it kind of pain if you aren't going to sit down and listen for a long time (since it's hard to find your spot again). I would definitely recommend it for any law school commuters or anyone with some down time that they want to use to review.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible - Avoid it at all costs!.......2007-05-24

Having listened to this CD numerous time (its a requirement for my law school) - I found that it is presented in a very confussing fashion. There is no clear progression from basics to putting it all together.

In contrast, the Dressler Sum and Substance on Criminal Law and Criminal Procedures are excellent. He is a fantastic instructor and makes you want to listen.

My vote: Get the Dressler S&S, avoid the Whaley materials at all costs!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Enlightening.......2005-10-17

Upon receiving my copies of "Contracts" audio CDs (Douglas J. Whaley), I am surprised at the negative reviews. Having completed two masters degrees, I have plenty of experience with poor instructors, poor textbooks, poor audio lessons; and poor universities. In my opinion, these Contracts CDs are excellent. Professor Whaley provides: (a) a clear speaking voice; (b) excellent inflection to keep the listener's attention; (c) good humor and vocabulary; (d) humorous case examples (e.g., minors as chimpanzees, dog law, paid-in-full checks, etc.); (e) well-organized lectures; and (f) plenty of detail to support further research. While I am not a Law student, these CDs are providing an excellent refresher for my MBA Business Law classes. These CDs are worth the price, and I will be ordering Professor Whaley's CDs on "Sale & Lease of Goods" (as well as the Finz CDs on Torts).

3 out of 5 stars Anyone... anyone... Bueller?.......2005-10-14

I have two S&S sets, Contracts and Torts. The difference is night and day. The Torts CDs are dare I say it... fun! The Contracts CDs are sooo dry and boring as to make them almost unlistenable. It's almost like listening to someone read from a textbook. I gave it 3 stars because some people might be looking for that type of "just give me the facts" approach. But my preference is for an entertaining listen that makes the CDs fun and memorable. You will NOT find that here.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Review.......2005-08-05

I really enjoyed Professor Whaley. He does stammer a bit, but he speaks very fast and covers a lot. I love his viewpoints and he clearly loves the subject. He has a great sense of humor and makes the lectures dynamic.

1 out of 5 stars College boy didn't like this gift..........2007-10-17

I purchased this book for my little brother who just started his sophomore year in college based on these great reviews. However, he really did not like it, and thought it was really stupid. Not a great gift, apparently.

5 out of 5 stars The realest!.......2007-06-03

This is such a funny book and even though things are said in a humorous way, most of what is said is true. I have laughed out loud several times while reading this book. But besides being so funny it also has a lot of useful stuff in it. There are a lot of tips in it like what is important to pack for moving to a dorm, some quick and easy recipes for those that don't cook, the fastest, neatest way to fold a shirt. What can be better than a book that makes you laugh AND help you out? Anyone that is in, has been in, or is planning to go to college will love it. This book is great!

5 out of 5 stars This could be the greatest book of all time.......2007-05-14

I am a high school senior, who hates to read. but let me tell you, this book is probably one of the greatest book EVER written. It explains the entire college experience from the last days of high school all the way through college graduation and everything in between. This book is a must have for any high school senior. Hands down. Basically if you are getting ready to go to college, buy this book because it is as important as your freshmen orientation.Hope you enjoy the book as much as i do.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, what little did I know.......2007-05-13

College life planned in a book and mixed with all the drugs you could do.

5 out of 5 stars Love The Site, Love The Book.......2007-03-28

I thought I'd already written a review for this but I hadn't! How bad is that? It's because I mixed some of the potent drinks described on the book and on the site. This book is very funny. It has two of the key writers from the site on it, Sarah and Streeter, who do most of the writing for the site or at least used to, and that helps keep it up to the high standards of the site. Some others have come on, some of who just aren't as good. It has alot of funny concepts and comments on college and college life. It's clever and original and in your face. The new book from the site Faking It isn't as good, but it's an okay read. God is a Woman - Dating Disasters is really good, too, Sarah and Streeter reviewed it with high marks. I also started this new book Schmucks by Jackie Mason and its very funny, too, talking about all the crazy stars of today and their behavior, like Mel Gibson. Anyway this book gets you to ask "What am I doing here?" about college in a fun way. If you think about it, the whole idea of college is really kind of bizarre, but a really fun bizarre that keeps us from having to face life for another 4 years - or 5 - or 6 - or, Jesus, just how bad are your grades?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-08-13

I was very pleased with this purchase. Reis gives a great overview of academia and the US university system. He make lots of points I hadn't thought of as well as some very sage comments on how education should be approached. The main drawback of the book is that it is a little outdated - for example he suggests the new idea of looking for job postings on a thing called the World Wide Web!

2 out of 5 stars Obfuscated text, with an orotund tone.......2007-05-13

I was extremely disappointed with this book. The auther attempts to appear clever and sly, but ends up sounding verbose and grandiloquent. Blast!

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book !.......2007-01-22

This is an excellent book. I used it extensively as I prepared to apply for a faculty position in a science department. I strongly recommend it to anyone who would want to become a university professor in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for any Ph.D. candidate in engineering.......2007-01-09

This is an excellent overview of Ph.D. program goals, career options for Ph.D.s, and job search strategies. There's even a section on what to do in your early career on the tenure track. I'm in a position that gives me particular knowledge of the process, and still, this book is extremely useful. It provides multiple perspectives on the profession and addresses not only high-end research universities, but also liberal arts colleges with science programs and everything in-between.

2 out of 5 stars Does not say anything new.......2004-07-03

The book is designed as a guide for graduate students, post-docs, and non-tenured faculty looking for careers in academic science and engineering.

The book has four parts: the first gives an exposition of the world of academia, the second discusses preparation for academic careers for graduate students and post-docs, the third discusses strategies for looking for and applying to academic positions, and the fourth discusses life as junior faculty and the tenure application process.

While the book is well-written and well-organized, it does not provide any helpful information or insight. All information in the book should be well-known to any graduate student or post-doc who is even slightly serious about a career in academic science and engineering.

For example, every graduate student and post-doc should know full well that teaching experience and grant-writing skills are indispensable when applying for an academic position. Every non-tenured faculty should know what tenure is all about and what is necessary in order to achieve it. The book discusses these issues as if these are helpful pointers for success in academia.

The book provides advice on how to write teaching portfolios, how to handle campus tours, how to negotiate salaries, etc. However, there are many excellent books and websites discussing these issues in greater detail. This book is thus superfluous and unnecessary.
