Not Great but not bad but I have seen it before..........2007-05-19
Is Sean telling us there is a hell of a lot of evil here on earth in the Vatican no less?
If there was a ranking of 3.5 stars I might have given the book this rating. It did hold my interest somewhat. But genetic time bombs kind of bore me with just targeting the JEWS.
There was a fictional story some time ago,I can't remember the title of the book or story, sorry about that, about a genetic bomb to decimate the Pakistani population in London.
So, I have read a similar premise before.
Sean, how about in your next book you have the main character that is someone who has all your talents and experiences fight and deal with the bad guys of the world. The story would begin in the teen years of the main character and would follow thru his adulthood.
Of course, your story would probably have to be a triology. The growing up years, your military training and what you now do. But these three books would have to tie everything with the illuminati and maybe the end times, as well as the satanists that run, the governments of the USA, Europe, China, Russia, Japan, and other Far East Nations and the Muslim world, not restricted to the Middle east either. I almost forgot, don't leave out the international drug cartel that keeps Wall Street in the Green. This book may be a little dangerous for you to write. But it is easy for an author to pick on the Vatican and Jews. It has been done to many times before. Let's think outside of the Catholic and Jewish box.
Or how about writing about a book about the development of satelites that
kills muslims when they are in a state of prayer. The sophisticated satalite picks up the brain waves, instead of using biologicals picking up on genes, of those who are praying to Allah and they are zapped by a beam weapon or scalar technology in mosques.
Or if this is to hot of a topic, how about satelites picking up brain waves of mormons in prayer. Pick your religion, but please don't use the color of a persons skin as the killer determinant, unless of course it is white.
But in all serious, Sean, your next fictional book(s) should have its main character be based on you and your extrodinary talents and experiences. Maybe you don't want to do this, but it would be terrific, I know, I remote viewed it.
Best of Luck in your future endeavors,

Book Description
1961, President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10930, the first step in a long series of efforts to regulate the ethical behavior of executive branch officials. A few years later Lyndon B. Johnson required all senior officials to report assets and sources of non-government income to the Civil Service Commission. The reaction to Watergate opened the floodgates to more laws and rules: the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, subsequent expansions of that act in the 1980s and 1990s, and sweeping executive orders by Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
The consequence of these aggressive efforts to scandal proof the federal government is a heavy accumulation of law and regulation administered by agencies employing hundreds of people and spending millions of dollars every year. Ethics regulation has been one of the steady growth sectors in the federal government for decades.
This book explores the process that led to the current state of ethics regulation in the federal executive branch. It assesses whether efforts to scandal proof the federal government have been successful, what they have cost, and whether reforms should be considered.
Informed by research of unprecedented scope and depth, Scandal Proof provides a balanced assessment of the character and impact of federal ethics regulatory effortsin the process raising an important question: Is there a better way to ensure honest government in Washington?

A thoughtfully written account.......2003-02-14
Written by G. Calvin Mackenzie (Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government at Colby College and an Adviser to the Brookings Presidential Appointee Initiative) with the assistance of Michael Hafken (Research Analyst at the Brookings Institution), Scandal Proof: Do Ethics Laws Make Government Ethical? offers an insightful analysis of the laws designed to regulate the ethical behavior of the federal government from 1961 (when President Kennedy signed Executive Order 10930), down to modern-day executive orders by Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. These efforts to "scandal-proof" government have been costly to finance in terms of taxpayer dollars, yet they have they been successful? Examining their real impact on how things are done, and presenting the question of whether there are better ways to bring more honesty to Washington government, Scandal Proof is a thoughtfully written account and highly recommended for students of Ethics and Political Science.

Book Description
The New Left was founded in 1962, and as a social and political protest movement, it captured the attention of the nation in the Sixties. By 1968, the New Left was marching in unison with hundreds of political action groups to achieve one goal--the end of the war in Vietnam. Under J. Edgar Hoover's direction, the FBI went from an intelligence collection agency during WWII, to an organization that tried to undermine protest movements like the New Left. Hoover viewed the New Left as a threat to the American way of life, so in an enormous effort of questionable legality, the FBI implemented some 285 counter-intelligence (COINTELPRO) actions against the New Left. The purpose of COINTELPRO was to "infiltrate, disrupt, and otherwise neutralize" the entire movement. In truth, the FBI intended to wage war on the antiwar movement. In this real-life spy story--J. Edgar Hoover and his G-Men, wiretaps, burglaries, misinformation campaigns, informants, and plants--Davis offers a glimpse into the endlessly fascinating world of the Sixties. Kent State, Columbia University, Vietnam Moratorium Day, the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Cambodian invasion and March Against Death are all examined in this riveting account of the longest youth protest movement in American history. This is the only book devoted entirely to the New Left COINTELPRO, and the first one written after the declassification of more than 6,000 counterintelligence documents that reveal the true nature and extent of the FBI's Assault on the Left.

Careful historical research..........2006-08-04
Almost six decades after the U.N. partition of Palestine, as Suzanne Gershowitz wrote, ascription of blame for Palestinian refugees still resonates in Israeli academic discourse. Following the lead of Avi Shlaim, an Oxford University historian and "new historian," post-Zionists have exculpated the Palestinians for heeding Arab calls to leave. Shlaim argued in a 1988 book that King Abdullah I of Transjordan and Jewish leaders colluded to force the partition of Palestine and, therefore, bear responsibility for the refugee crisis that followed.[Avi Shlaim, Politics of Partition: King Abdullah, the Zionists, and Palestine, 1921-1951 New York: Oxford University Press, 1998].
In Israeli-Jordanian Dialogue, 1948-1953, Haifa University professor Gelber decisively refutes Shlaim's thesis by showing that the Israelis and King Abdullah did not aim to conspire against the Palestinians. He argues, rather, that, for the Israelis and Abdullah--who had deep-seated mutual interests and a long-standing bond--partition turned out to be the most viable solution to a thorny problem.
Relying on documents from Israeli and British archives (the latter of which include records of broadcast statements from Arab leaders), Gelber details the Zionist-Jordanian dialogue from the waning days of the British mandate through the 1948 war, to the Israeli raid on Qibya in 1953, which marked the end of the Israeli-Jordanian bond and Jordan's reunion with the Arab coalition. Gelber explains the nuances of the diplomacy among representatives from Israel, the United States, Britain, the United Nations, Transjordan, and other Arab states. His analysis spans both the political and military issues that shaped the Israeli-Jordanian dialogue.
The coverage of Transjordan's 1948 invasion of Israel sets the scene for subsequent examination of the tenuous occupation of the West Bank and the collapse of the Palestinian government in Gaza, which Gelber suggests had to do more with military than political developments. Several chapters examine the diplomatic efforts behind the first nonaggression pact and other attempts at peace from the end of the war through 1953.
Gelber highlights King Abdullah's struggle in balancing his necessary relations with Israel with those he had with the broader Arab world, hostile to the Jewish state's independence, while at the same time posturing himself as a representative of the Palestinians following the Egyptian subordination of Gaza.
Israeli-Jordanian Dialogue, 1948-1953 sheds light not only on an important historical episode, but it has historiographic significance as well. Too often, professors subsume scholarship to their own political agendas. It has become fashionable among many historians to substitute theory for research or omit evidence that undercuts their thesis.[Efraim Karsh, "Benny Morris's Reign of Error, Revisited," Middle East Quarterly, Spring 2005, pp. 31-42]. Careful historical research such as Gelber's grounds the debate about the early years of the Palestinian refugee crisis.

The Morpheus Connection.......2000-03-31
The story is about betrayal. The chief protagonist, David, sufers several betrayals. First, he is betrayed by his own governement which takes him away from his young happy life and thrusts him into the killing fields of Vietnam. Then he is betrayed by the one person he loves the most in his life, his girl friend, who has a change of heart and loves another man. When he gets back to the States after he is wounded, he is then betrayed by his countrymen who treat him as though he were a coward. He is totally disillusioned about life, love, honor and duty. He has lost his faith in civilization and humanity. And, fianlly, when is psychiatrist betrays him for a self interest, it turns him into a killing rage.
While serving in Vietnam, David is forced to kill a young Vietnamese soldier. He also witnesses the rape of a young native girl by his own buddy, and when the girl's grandmother tries to kill the buddy, David kills the old woman. His buddy then kills the girl. David is thus drawn deeper and deeper into savagery. The most dramatic transformation takes place by the joining of the eyes of the three living things at the scene of the rape: the green eyes of the cat, the cursing eyes of the dying grandmother, and the horrified eyes of David. As the old womam looks back at him with hate, an energy force from her eyes hit David as though it were an accusation and condemnation. From that moment on, David becomes filled with disgust for his own action, and this disgust turns into hate for mankind.
The author hints that man's relationship with his fellowman could have been based on love and turst, striving for harmony and benevolence, instead of on conflict and and violence. This relationship can be achieved this way : the soul's message is communicated through telepathy (the Morpheus motif), and the body's message can be expressed through harmonious contacts, such as the sex act. Intimacy can be thus achieved, and inthis condition, man can let down his defense mechanism and feels at peace with himself and the world.
But the damage to David's soul and body distorts and clouds his outlook on life. His telepathy becomes murderous. He expresses his disgust for civlization and mankind only through hate. HOw can this man be redeemed? During the last part of the book, his heart becomes the battlefield of animal hate and sanity. Finally, his native goodness trimphs when David kills himself instead of killing his girl friend. This supreme act of self-sacrifice redeems him.
And how does the author carry this out? With a Bang! After reading the first two pages, you will not want to put the book down. The pacing of the ending is so terrific that it will leave you breathless. Catharsis is achieved when David kills himself; the climax is shattering and sad. You will feel flooded with pity, sympathy, and regret for him. Oedipus comes to mind.
Another betrayal is also felt by Alix, when she is used by Dr. Mike for the sake of his research. I like to see her come back where she regains her faith in humanity with renewed commitment to help people.
One word about the sex scenes. They are there, directly or in contrast, to show a possible intimacy when man is at his complete harmony with his fellow beings and at peace with his own existence.

What happened to the review that I e-mailed to you on 02/10/2000? I thought a review would be put on within 5 days, but now it has been a month. Is it possible for you to respond?
Very intense reading.......2000-02-10
Maine has turned out a few really good writers (very quietly of course) and Doug Volk is actually one of them. This Vietnem/horror story is a bit hard to swallow at first, but the writing is just a shade from being realism so even the strangest parts eventually seem plausible. The misery dripping off the pages where our main character (David Collier) roams, is so disturbing that you want him to seek exacting revenge on everyone who scorned him. After being disfigured in Vietnam, Collier turns hateful and quite evil when he realizes his gift for invading dreams, but you don't care. You know he was a good guy before he lost an eye and got horrible burns on half his face. Read this book if you like Stephen King, I actually preferred this to King, but I'm sure many would disagree. The characters become more realistic as you read and the plot gets very scary. Several scenes made me cover my feet as I lay in bed reading--you should read this. Volk self-published, too, and I believe that he deserves to be heard. Be nice!
Lots of scarey levels in this psycho thriller!!!.......1999-01-14
This is a good first effort for author Douglas Volk, a Downeasterner up state from here! He crystalizes in 466 pages the frightening effects of the Viet Nam Conflict on David Collier, a veteran turned psycho. And the book, too, is full of conflicts. Between doctor and patient; between man and woman; between employer and employee...between right and wrong. The storyline is set during the summer of 1974 with scenes created in Atlanta, Boston, and even famed Swampscott! There are memorable characters here some of whom truely develop from page to page along with the nightmareish plot. The secondary plot, as well, develops in parallel to the principal one, yet more attention by the writer to the secondary characters--for example, development of the television reporter and other media personnel--would have streghtened the relationship of the fall of the Nixon administration and the War to that of the fall of Alex Cassidy and Dr. Mike on the first plot level. It may have even earned this book a five star salute! Could it be that Alex will meet up through her dreams with an alien in writer Volk's sequel?? I can't wait.

Product Description
The shocking death of a CIA deputy director on a marlin fishing boat during a secret visit to Australia exposes an international conspiracy to split Australia into two countries.
Book Description
Arnette Heidcamp has had more experiences with hummingbirds in her house than any other bird lover. After sharing the story of Squeak and Rosie, she now tells us about ten more feathered visitors in Hummingbirds: My Winter Guests.
Arnette's winter guests were birds who because of illness or injury were unable to fly south for the winter, or birds that had migrated to the wrong place and needed a winter refuge. Among them were Charlie, a rubythroat who was attacked by a cat; Little Peeper, with a shoulder injury; K-T, the little miracle bird who flew into a window at full speed and survived; Little One, a baby hummingbird who was abandoned when her nest was destroyed; and finally, joining K-T in the sunroom for a winter filled with hummingbird interaction, Cry- stal and Red, Arnette's third and fourth rufous hummingbirds in three years.
Sooner or later all of Arnette's guests, much to her sorrow, left her to return to their hummingbird wilds. She is happy for them but misses them all.
Here is another charming tale in a most readable series, a wonderful tribute to the indomitable spirit of the hummingbird. Hummingbirds: My Winter Guests will have you examining closely each tiny bird you are fortunate enough to see, in search of K-T, Charlie, and all of Arnette's feathered friends.

Delightful and charming ..........2000-04-17
This is a delightful book that shares the intimate lives of hummingbirds on-the-mend. I fell in love with all the author's wintering guests: Charlie, Little One, Peeper, Red, Crystal, and K-T. I was sincerely sad when the book ended; I wished there were a hundred more pages. Aside from the book being full of love and wonder, it's also an informative book that explores hummingbird behavior. Some of the information that Ms. Heidcamp shares was helpful for me, since I have spent much of my time watching hummingbirds in my own tree-studded backyard. It is obvious that the author genuinely loves these beautiful little gems, as she diligently nurtures these birds back to health so that they may be released back into nature. I honestly felt her sadness in "letting go." My only disappointment is that Ms. Heidcamp did not mention what happened to Peeper, the "Little Angel," with a shoulder injury. I would like to know how things worked out for him. I would also love to learn more about some of the questions readers and bird lovers have asked the author over the years and her answers to those questions.

A delightful book that shares a rare intimacy with hummers........1998-11-18
Hummingbirds : My Winter Guests is a wonderful little book. It is rare to have the opportunity to view hummingbirds so closely over a long period of time. The author conveys the personality of each of her little guests, and educates you about them without reading like a textbook. I fell in love with each of her guests, and was sad as each of them left. My only criticism is that she never finished the story of Peeper. She said that all of her guests eventually left and described each one's leaving, Peeper's healing and leave-taking were not addressed. Since he became my favorite, I still want to know more of what happened to him. I have 2 more of her books to read - I'm saving them for when I need a day of magic, which these books certainly present.
