Book Description
When is the right time to shear a sheep? Is there a market for manure? What time of day is best to collect eggs? What is the correct way to milk a goat? What does a duck eat? Can a cow and a sheep share the same pasture? Which types of rabbits are easiest to raise?
The perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having that little place in the country, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers tried-and-true, expert advice on raising healthy, happy, productive farm animals: chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and dairy cows.
Each chapter focuses on a different animal, discussing the pros and cons of raising the animal, housing and land requirements, feeding guidelines, health concerns, and a schedule for routine care. Species that are easy to raise, hardy, and companionable are profiled. First-time farmers will discover simple, clear instructions for caring for animals throughout the year, as well as guidelines for processing barnyard products such as milk, wool, and eggs. Combining practical advice from real experts, easy-to-use checklists and charts, a seasonal care calendar, and detailed black-and-white illustrations, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers a comprehensive review of the ins and outs - the tribulations and triumphs - of living with and caring for a small barnyard.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative!.......2007-10-18
This book contains a lot of useful information. With details concerning every aspect of care for each type of animal. Would highly recommend.
Fantastic!.......2007-09-09
This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!
great book!.......2007-08-10
This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.
Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08
This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...
Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19
Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.

Customer Reviews:
Great illustrations increase participation of listeners!.......2007-05-29
I lead storytime programs for our local library and do outreach to area nursery schools. I just read this book last week and have nothing but raves for it. Not only is the story successful, the illustrations draw the listener in and provide ample opportunity for comments and laughs. The author also uses the days to sequence the action, which was good reinforcement for learning the days. On Monday..., "what day comes next after Monday?"..., etc. The final page, as someone already mentioned, shows an illustration of pigs, leading readers/listeners to predict what will happen next. Be prepared for the almost immediate "Pigs to the rescue!".
An A+ book, it has become one of my faves.
FUN!.......2007-03-13
My son and I have fun reading this story. I read everything up to "Chickens to the rescue!" and then he bursts out thoses words and laughs every time.
It is a really cute book for kids.

Book Description
"Early one morning, Goose sets out to make a nest." Honk! The first place Goose finds looks nice and warm. But "Silly Little Goose!" That pen is for the pigs! Then Goose finds someplace nice and soft, a rag box in the tool shed. But "Silly Little Goose!" The cat and her kittens already live there. Lovable, muddled Goose finally encounters an old straw hat, which readers have seen tumbling throughout the story. It's warm, soft, quiet, cozy -- perfect! Goose lays her eggs and watches over them until -- crack! crack! crack! -- out pop eight wonderful peeping chicks. "Hooray for Little Goose!"

Incredibly popular with my boys!.......2007-08-23
We were given this book by our doctor after a check-up - I figured it was just a nice treat for the kids and they'd push it aside. WRONG! It turned out to be their FAVORITE book for over a year. It got so worn I bought the hardcover copy and we still read it on most days.
There are pictures of all different animals, so if your kids are learning to make animal sounds, it's fun for them to point at the different animals and tell you what they say.
A must for toddlers.......2005-10-12
This book was given to my daughter for her first birthday in the paperback form. It quickly became her favorite and she even took it to bed some nights! She really liked the large amount of pictures, simple plot, and simple short sentences - it kept her attention span. Furthermore, the story really won her over when my husband or I would make the animal sounds. At the end, all the animals in the story were pictured together and we made a game of identifying each animal by having her point to the correct animal when we named it. Eventually, the cover came off the book from being well loved and it was finally lost at day care for show-n-tell. I just ordered a new copy!
Charming story for pre-schoolers & kindergarteners.......2002-03-07
My 6 year old and 3 1/2 year old love this story. They got it for Easter last year, and we have read it many times. They love to see the silly places the goose chooses for her nest. The illustrations are appealing--a nice Easter basket story!

Raising Small Livestock.......1998-08-14
The ideal handbook for those looking for information in a simple format that is complete in detail and content. It is apparent the author has written from first-hand experience on everything from birds to turkeys. A great reference book to have on the shelf when your daughter wants a cage or hutch for her new pet rabbit or you want to know how to tan that hide from your most recent hunting expedition. Want to try your hand at a small farm? This book is a must first.

Don't hesitate, buy it........2005-11-29
This is one of the best books I ever read to my kids. And they usually picked it first for bedtime reading. It is written in rhyme and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful.
FANTASTIC!.......2004-12-09
This is a great rhythmical story that supports early readers because of it predictablitly of the story. The antics are fun and exciting. Also, the illustrations are absolutly FABULOUS and is what kept me interested as a child and still today as a new teacher.
all time favorite.......2000-05-03
This book is one of my all time favorites. I started reading to my children when they were babies - it has great rythm. It is delightful for adults, and my children have always been riveted. My one year old twins stop whatever they are doing to listen to the story whenever I start reading it. (I even "read" it to them in the car or bath because it is an easy little poem to memorize!)
Reading made easy...and FUN!.......2000-03-29
Written in rhyme, this book makes it easy for young readers to experience the thrill of reading all by themselves. Of course, the goose's antics only add to the excitement. This is a great book to motivate your preschooler to want to learn to read.

A lively picture book story of stubborn barnyard animals.......2004-01-15
Imaginatively written and brightly illustrated by Jill Newton, Gordon In Charge is a lively picture book story of stubborn barnyard animals. A strong-willed goat named Gordon declares himself leader of the barnyard, but when he gets an equally stubborn rival, how are they to settle who really is in charge? Jill Newton's exuberant color illustrations add a deft sense of whimsy and a lot of outright fun to this original, engaging, and recommended picture book tale.
