Websters: easy, fast and complete.......2007-08-10
I just loved this dictionary, it's easy to find the words in the book and easier in de computer (cd-room). It's very complete and the material it's good too.
And more, I received the product very fast and well packed.
Recommended for translators - I love the CD.......2007-06-21
I translate documents into English from Portuguese and Spanish. This dictionary was highly recommended by a group of my colleagues. Quality writing in the target language is vital. For example, it's important to see what the cognate of the foreign language term really means in English. I hadn't paid much attention to my choice of English dictionaries except to buy a giant Random House unabridged, but this is much more useful AND the CD makes it so practical (although I'd probably benefit ergonomically from leaving the keyboard, picking up a hardbound book, and looking up a word!)
Best Dictionary on the Planet and a Great Deal!.......2007-05-14
I love this dictionary. The software version even works with Word 2007 running under Vista. The dictionary has a space on the tool bar and I can access it while writing.
For less than 20 bucks, you get an excellent hard bound dictionary, and an excellent electronic dictionary. Best deal on Amazon as far as I'm concerned. I'd pop 20 bucks just for the electronic version.
a very useful reference.......2007-05-13
this product is of rare utility for whomever uses written words, i.e. for most people. I use it in the classroom at the university, where I teach English-Italian classes, and the cd version is always running in my laptop, a terrific tool for full-text searches.
Convenience.......2007-03-26
Overall it was very good, you could find most of the new words and with easy definition...

Kirby is King and so is this Hardcover.......2007-09-15
Listen - I've been collecting comics for thirty years and let me tell you that this is a great edition not just in terms of content but format. I don't understand the negative reviews due to the paper. In my opinion this paper should be used for all books of this type where classic stories are being reprinted. It doesn't have that annoying high gloss like the Marvel Masterworks do. It keeps the colors so vibrant but yet gives you that old school feel. Bravo - I just ordered volume 2!
A Collection Worthy of the New Gods.......2007-09-15
I waffled a lot before buying the volume (hearing tales of the paper quality and such).
My first impressions upon handling it were that if felt light for such a thick book, but after removing the shrink wrap I was pleasantly surprised. The paper felt just right, and while reminiscent of the type of paper used in comics, it was clearly of a higher quality.
Then lets talk color, they were beautiful, you feel like you are back in the 1970's buying the comics right off the rack. Some collections recolor the colors of the book in a garish manner, not here, though I don't have the originals to compare them to directly the way this book was colored was a joy to behold and felt true to the artist's intentions.
The binding was not tight, easy to read and stayed open.
Since the way this book is supposed to run is in chronological order the way the original comics were published, you get Kirby's fantastic run of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen as handled by Kirby. The only irony I find in this is a few years ago when they reprinted the New Gods, Forever People, and Mister Miracle, along with Jimmy Olsen, only Jimmy Olsen received the color treatment, the rest were in horrid black and grey with some sort of tone added to them which I found distracting to say the least. Now they are all in beautiful color
Even if you have bought them before in other formats, this is the definitive edition.
We can only pray DC will do the same with The Demon and Omac, two short lived Kirby Classics.
If Quality Is King--Treat the King With Respect!!!.......2007-08-24
I have to say, I'm as surprized and disgusted by the defense certain reviewers have shown this volume as they are that others would complain about the shoddiness of it.
This book deserves a bad review; it serves as a blatant example of how little respect Marvel and DC have for the work they've continued to mine and desecrate for the better part of three decades. (And do the big two really need to hear these gourmands defend printing classic works on toilet paper for Fifty Dollars? They seem to be content enough on their own.) I'll add only two more remarks to the many that have already been made on the matter--the first of which is a quote from the volume in question. From Mark Evanier's afterword, regarding Jack's apspirations in doing the work reprinted in this very book:
"He [Kirby] just wanted to do something successful and lead comics away from the cheap, disposable format in which they were then published. It was partly a matter of believing the material deserved better and partly a prohpecy that the old format was doomed...So he talked of larger comics, better paper, more sophisticated printing--product that could be sold in bookstores and other heretofore-untapped outlets."
Lastly, in light of that testimonial how are we to think, in this age of Mouse Guard, Absolute Kingdom Come, and Fantagraphics' Prince Valiant reprints, Jack would like to know that his work is deemed deserving of paper, ink, and printing plates of even lesser quality than he was afforded in 1970?
The Visionary Pulp Pen.......2007-07-31
This book really is a treasure. As comics embraced the "graphic novel", and time brought depth and adult themes into the four-color world, much was gained, but much was lost as well. One thing that the adult world of comics could never equal, is the sheer exuberence and wonder generated by Jack Kirby.
In its time, Kirby's Fourth World was startlingly new. It had the feel of a novel, with vast scope, playing out across four books in an interwoven tapestry of chapters. It was also a hothouse of creative energy; Kirby's sweeping imagination had free rein here.
In the beginning, and on through its middle chapters, Kirby was equal to holding this vision together coherently. Sometimes his scenes had operatic power. His critics have endlessly pointed out the childish aspects of his writing, but the point here is not a gritty realism. This story was a modern reworking of the great myths, aimed at an audience of preteens and teens, and as such, it was a source of intense wonder.
For thirty five years the Fourth World has cried out to be presented properly. In color, in the sequential order of each chapter's release,
as a hardcover. This book gives us all of that.
Some of the reviews I've read are disappointed in the paper. I could not disagree more strongly. The newsprint-feel of the paper makes it seem as
if the original comics themselves have been purged of ads and assembled between hardcovers -- exactly the look and feel that is perfect for these works.
Kirby created a world in broad strokes, bursting with vitality. Reading these works is exhilirating, and kindles a sense that imagination is the greatest power of all.
Definately Worth It.......2007-07-30
Upon close examination of this book, I find the paper and binding to be just fine. The paper is thicker than newsprint and the old comic book paper, and the binding is at least partially sewn because I can see part of a thread sticking up. The binding seems quite sturdy and does not look like it will fall apart any time soon. The pages were cut evenly on my copy. The printing on the dust jacket and the hard cover itself is beautiful. There are almost 400 full color pages in this book! At the price you can buy this for on Amazon it is well worth the money.
Product Description
The thesis of Webster Tarpley's 911 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA has been enthusiastically received with its working model of the 9/11 plot: a covert network of moles, patsies, and a commando cell in the privatized intelligence services, backed by corrupt political and corporate media elites. Buttressed by historical examples like the Baader-Meinhof Gang and the Gunpowder Plot, this model makes it clear how such a monstrous false-flag or self-terror exploit is possible even under a largely benign government. That paradox is the incredibility gap that has made most Americans reject the evidence about 9/11 as paranoid fantasy. Tarpley brings decades of expertise to the 9/11 issue. In 1978 he exposed the terrorist Red Brigades as patsies of Italy's fascist P2 shadow government, and 9/11 is on the same pattern. The forthright subtitle, Made in USA, is backed up by an analysis of key figures who behave like moles working for the insidious network. 9/11 Synthetic Terror highlights the salient points of sheer physical impossibility of the official 9/11 conspiracy theory. It makes clear that figures like Osama bin Laden are patsies, dupes or double agents, selected for their ethnic coloring as the basis for launching a "Clash of Civilizations," and how absurd it is to imagine that such tools of US intelligence agencies could turn around and infiltrate or overwhelm US defenses unaided. Tarpley shows that the wars on the Islamic world, the Soviet-Afghan, Kosovo and Chechen conflicts, as well as US-UK-NATO synthetic terror incidents like 9/11, Beslan or 3/11 in Madrid, have been contrived to continue the Cold War, in pursuit of the centuries-long campaign for Anglo hegemony over Eurasia and the world. The preface to the second edition explains the significance and superiority of "MIHOP" vs "LIHOP," and the many drills on 9/11 and on 7/7, which were cover and conduit for those false-flag operations. The third edition preface makes clear that 9/11 is the only issue that can stop a new world war and the descent into a police state. It shows up the cowardice of the "left gatekeepers" on this score. The analysis of Moussaoui on trial as a classic weak-minded patsy -- part double agent, part fanatic -- again shows the unique power of Tarpley's mole-patsy model to debunk the lies put out by the war party. For a principled refutation of the 9/11 propaganda myth in all its parts, Tarpley'A bombshell, brilliant book - I strongly recommend 911 Synthetic Terror. Should be required reading for all honest truth seekers, s work is indispensable.

An insult.......2007-10-15
to intelligence and to the memory of the 3000 innocent victims felled by Islamist fanaticism
Tour De Force !.......2007-08-05
This book is packed with information which probably means that if you are a beginning truth seeker, you would want to start out with something such as David Ray Griffins books as they are a little easier to read.
Think for yourself, and QUESTION!.......2007-07-09
I heard this guy speak. He gives a moderately entertaining romp through a lot of true information, and more. 95% of what he says is plausible (if questionable). Perhaps 50% of what I heard, I know to be true. But plenty of his stuff is a shotgun blast of information which only SEEMS convincing by its voluminousness, but in fact has no evidence. Take his (and Tex Marrs') claim about "angel is next". This refers to a threat supposedly delivered to Bush by moles in his staff, entailing a threat on air force 1, and nuclear war by compromised launch codes on 9/11. He gives a whole rapt story, with twists and turns and lots of insider details. It's not totally impossible, and could make fine fiction, but has no evidence whatsoever.
There's too much crucial, true, and verifiable information out there to waste your time on this in-depth far-out fantasy garbage. I wouldn't trust this man to give me a weather report.
The search for Truth is one step at a time.......2007-07-09
I love to devour books. I leave my local library with no less than two or three volumes after each visit. Sometimes I wonder if I ever race through literature too quickly. Occasionally a book crops up that can be sifted through within a few hours, depending on its type, although I always try to keep pages of notes on hand if I misplace or forget key facts or points. Webster Tarpley's "9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA" is not one of those books. Quite the contrary, I recommend this book to be studied ponderously, pored over hours at a time, critically dissected and examined, not to mention cross-referenced by numerous other sources, whether they be unauthorized or obscure. Supposedly, we live in the "Information Age", yet the most unverifiable of claims and propositions confuse and sway more efficiently than ever before, and the populace hardly diligently deciphers what is true. Partisan politics, not to mention rigid principles ("liberal" and "conservative") can dampen even the freshest and inquisitive of minds. That kind of reader will not enjoy Tarpley's book.
I personally do not subscribe to any one conspiracy theory, precisely because there are so many, and thus hundreds that follow sweeping conclusions based on the stretching of facts, outright absurdness, and lack of relevant evidence. I, however, cannot outright dismiss the conspiratorial views regarding the tragic day of September 11 because I so often come across pertinent points. The groups propagating such theories ask the correct questions most of the time, whether or not they embrace the correct conclusion. Rather, I believe piecing together the facts from a variety of authors and sources into a sound theoretical framework appears to be the only way to acquire the truth behind the 9/11 attacks that is free from dogma or ideology (although many of these authors and sources do just that).
What the book's author does is exactly this: combing the external facts, the puzzling discrepancies, historical evidences, public testimony, important documents, etc. and constructing each part into a plausible theoretical framework. From what I conducted during other research, I think Tarpley's essential thesis is correct. It is that the U.S. government secretly holds an elite oligarchy, or a "network or faction of like-minded plotters which cuts across the institutions transversally" (pg. 104). They hold influential positions as a hidden government inside the elected one. The group may not populate just the intelligence agencies, the Pentagon, or the White House, but also the privatized public sector, which acts as its center of gravity. The oligarchy deploys a select amount of "moles", which may not be everywhere, but are nonetheless strategically placed to carry out core objectives. The corporate media participates also, complicit with the magicians directing the show. These core objectives numerously appear throughout the course of history, especially the twentieth century, such as the many attempts to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle and Operation Northwoods, in which planned attacks on key U.S. targets would justify an invasion of Castro's Cuba.
How does this relate to 9/11? Tarpley himself dismisses the official media story as the ultimate conspiracy theory of them all, and unveils these facts:
+ Six of alleged 11 hijackers receive training at U.S. military bases (pg.179)
+ Mohammed Atta: Not a radical Islamist, but a promiscuous playboy and frequent cocaine user hooking up at topless bars and drinking vodka for three hours (pg. 178)
+ Could hijackers fly the planes? Atta and Marwan Al Shehhi had to receive supplemental lessons due to sub-par performance, according to an instructor associated with the Jones Aviation Flying Service (pg. 183)
+ Instructors at Maryland Freeway Airport acknowledged that, despite 600 log hours, Pentagon hijacker Hani Hanjour was incapable of finishing his flight training (pg. 183)
+ The hijackers, instead of choosing direct ways to their targets, flew long detours (pg. 188)
+ Training needed to pilot 757s or 767s required special precision and "super training" not offered at Huffman Aviation, where the Flight 11 and Flight 175 hijackers received lessons (pg. 191)
Although I do not recall whether Tarpley mentioned it in the book or not, but on September 10, 2001, then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced that $2.3 TRILLION could not be accounted for in the Pentagon budget. Obviously, the story vanished the next day. Tarpley also discloses lesser-known factoids of equal importance, including the fact that live fly, NORAD exercises were conducted on 9/11, some that even resembled hijacked airliners (pg. 207). On page 213, Tarpley writes how blips and dummy hijacks occurred, thus confusing loyal air controllers on 9/11. Why, exactly? So government moles could carry out their ordered operations.
There is so much more to this work than I let on in this review. Suffice to say, whatever your political background, this is one of the most important books regarding current events that I ever read. A lot of the information, I admit, made my head swirl, even when I gasped and cringed throughout what I read. At the end of the book, I felt depressed and sorrowful. I expressed pity at the American people, of whom most this book will never find, and how so quickly we abandoned our Founding Fathers' dream of a constitutional republic of a well-informed and hardworking independent people. President Reagan, leaving all conceptions of this book behind about various government officials aside, said, "Trust but verify." We forgot. Will we be forgiven again?
Comprehensive Review of 9/11.......2007-07-08
Tarpley provides a thorough analysis of the 9/11 and how the tragedies could have happened. This book is a must read for those interested in the 9/11 truth issues.
The book goes into great detail about logistics of the attacks. Tarpley shows his experience as a historian and the amount of time he used to research into the issues.

The King of Creativity.......2007-10-13
This is some of Kirby's finest work. Has anyone created more epic characters than Jack? Nope. It's a great visual feast and I very much like the way it's produced. Anyone who complains about the paper should step back and give it another chance and look at the merits of this paper choice. I personally think this paper should be used for all these types of reprints of old material - Masterworks, Archives , etc. In my humble opinion this paper presents this material with beautiful color but without the over slickness of the paper used on many Marvel Masterworks editions. It preserves the feel of the old comics but with much better color saturation and registration. There's something about the really slick paper that just doesn't lend itself to these classic works. It's hard to articulate but I have been won over by this format. Great job DC - keep it up!
Awesome!.......2007-09-28
The first thing I did after removing the shrinkwrap was to check the format of this book against volume 1. It is exactly the same, the same paper, the same binding, so if you hate volume 1 you will hate volume 2 as well. The stories seem to be getting better and better, and the only word I could come up with to describe it is "Awesome!" I really like having some of Kirby's pencils as a bonus at the back of the book, and the comentaries by other artists at the beginning and end give context and insite into what Kirby was trying to accomplish. I think he succeeded and I can hardly wait for volume 3.
The New Gods Sage Come Together.......2007-09-23
I had debated getting this book for sometime, as with the first volume my impression was, upon handling it, if felt light for such a thick book, but after removing the shrink wrap I was pleasantly surprised.
Though all the stories in this volume have been reprinted before, remember all but the Jimmy Olsen were printed in horrid black and white (what other DC collections, except for their showcase line, are in black and white) with the added insult of tones being added to the art to rendering it murky.
What is really impressive is how the story reads when collected in the order it is published. Unless you bought the books off the racks in the 1970's or you actually made an effort to find their publication dates nobody has recently read them as Kirby had intended. The cut from one section of the saga is interesting, Jimmy Olsen is at the fringe, Mister Miracle a little bit closer, Forever People even deeper, and the New Gods at the center of it all. You can see more and more characters getting drawn into the story.
A lot of people will decry the silly story with Don Rickles, but when read in context it shows that everyone was being drawn into this cosmic war, plus some comic relief is much needed when you have the high melodrama of the New Gods going on.
Extras include a hefty helping of original kirby pencil art at the back of the book. I wish they would have included the house ads, oh well.
The next volume (#3) will pack the most punch as you come to some of Kirby's strongest stuff yet (The Pact) and Scott Free's escape to earth is shown in a flashback story you will not soon forget.
See you there.
Hard to review........2007-09-12
There is no question that comics readers owe a debt of gratitude to Jack Kirby. He created or co-created so many iconic comic book characters. His art style is uniquely his own and he created effects like Kirby Dots that were used for many years.
Here he has many great ideas: The aftermath of Ragnarok(The end of the Norse gods). The metaplot in 4 different comic series. Living electronics. Nature vs. Nurture. Duality and transformation.
And yet there is something odd going on too. The dialog comes out of a comic from the 30's, the slang is from the 60's, and Goody Rickles (Don Rickles doppleganger)? And then Don Rickles actually shows up and acknowledges this weirdness?
To make this long story short, it may be too strange for some readers. But it's enjoyable on the surface anyway.

"Perhaps the best-written HTML tutorial ever."
This book occupies a unique spot in my opinion. It's "the competition." All other HTML/Web page learning or how-to books are trying to knock the crown from this book's head. While it may not be for everyone, it just does such a superb job that it defines the field. Congratulations, Elizabeth.
This is what I could classify as a true intermediate or advanced book. Elizabeth Castro doesn't waste time or steps trying to teach a newbie how to click here or create a text file. In fact, so much is assumed that this really can't be called a beginner book at all. So, if you know what you're doing or what you want, this book will serve you well.
The whole HTML thing is broken down into tasks: formatting, text, layout commands, cascading style sheets--the whole nine yards. Then individual HTML commands or tasks are illustrated one to a page. The steps fall down the outside of the page; illustrations line the page's inside.
While this is all a great way to learn HTML, I can still find room for improvement--though not at the expense of the format. For example, a reference or tear-out card would have been handy. And some topics, especially JavaScript, are glossed over too quickly to be useful. From personal experience, I know that some topics, such as FTP, could use even more hands-on examples.
If you "get it" when it comes to computers, and are ready to do some down-and-dirty HTML coding (and I'm not talking lame-old FrontPage here), this book will teach you the basics in no time. It will provide a firm foundation upon which you can easily build your Web pages for the future. --Dan Gookin
Book Description
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the lingua franca of the Web, and like any language, it's constantly evolving. That's why Elizabeth Castro has written
HTML 4 for the World Wide Web, Fourth Edition: Visual QuickStart Guide, an update to her blockbuster guide to HTML 4. You'll find all the concise, practical advice--and fun examples--that made the first edition a worldwide bestseller, plus entirely new coverage of debugging, JavaScript, and using tables for page layout, and an expanded section on Cascading Style Sheets.
Like all the books in the
Visual QuickStart series, this one breaks even the most complex tasks into easy-to-follow steps illustrated with hundreds of screenshots and the actual code. The book presumes no prior knowledge of HTML, making it the perfect introduction for beginners. But its tabbed format and info-packed appendixes (on special HTML characters and Web-safe colors, for example) also make it a handy and indispensable reference for those who build Web pages for a living. Find out why Amazon called the previous edition a "dream guide" to HTML.

So You Thought You Knew Your History.......2006-02-25
This is one of the better college texts for American history. The information is straight forward compared to the full text version, and no information is missed between its big brother. The second half highlights from 1865 onward into the 21st century. I would highly reccomend this book for students taking a introductory course in college or AP American History in high school.
Great Overview!.......2005-09-27
This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865. It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations were fantastic in revealing how life truly was at a time we often have a hard time imagining, let alone comprehending these days. In addition, I found it really helpful in learning the information and doing well on my exams!
Worst History Book Of All.......2005-09-06
This has got to be the worst and boring history book of all. Throughout my entire years in school reading history book this has to be the worst. It gets so boring you can't even read it if you try. If you did read it, chances are you did not understand them 10 pages. Combining with a horrible professor and book it's going to be one long semester for me.
very left wing bias.......2004-06-04
dont waste your time with this guy. I don't know where he gets his info. My son has one of Mr. Nash's textbooks for history and I have never seen so much left wing bias, especially in a textbook.
Do your own research.......2004-01-09
It's amazing to me to read reviews of people who tout this book as "liberal propaganda" when it merely tells the truth about history. If you wanted the whitewashed version of history we were taught in high school, where Christopher Columbus had pure motives in the new world and didn't rape or enslave the native population, where the Native Americans were savages who were domesticated by the pilgrims who so graciously shared a Thanksgiving feast with them, where Woodrow Wilson's racism and hatred of women isn't mentioned...why did you bother taking a college history course, or bother going to college for that matter, at all? Pull your heads out of the sand! If you truly believe this book is socialist propaganda, I recommend you start doing your own research of America's past without using any high school or college textbook as a source of information - you'll find that this particular textbook has one of the truest pictures of American history available.

Wonderful.......2007-02-19
In depth text of the events prior, during and after World War II. Starts with the Signing of the Treaty of Versailles by the "Big Three" (France, Britain and United States) and ends with the events leading to the unset of the Korean War. In the text there are numerous maps of military strategies and movements from the Mediterranean Theater Operations to Germans' Blitzkrieg. I personal recommend this prestigious text for anyone wanting an extensive academia perspective to the events, people, and situations of World War II.
Review of Lyons' World War II: A Short History.......2005-01-13
The book definitely offers a good overview of the EUROPEAN part of World War II, from diplomatic, economic, military before and during the conflict. Lyons offers a balanced view of conflict and that would both be suitable for academics and general readers alike. Lyons' style also provide the wealth of information in an interesting way.
However, Lyons' spent most of its time on Europe and overlooks the World War II outside the Western Hemisphere. It would be easy to overlook that China and Japan has already began fighting in July 1937, over two years before Germany invaded Poland on September 1939.
A Very Good General Text On WWII!.......2003-07-12
This interesting and very well written book is intended as a general text book for teaching purposes, and as such is geared to a more basic and general understanding of the broad sweep, causes, course, and effects of the Second World War than it is a revealing or thought-provoking examination or reinterpretation of all the evidence such as Weinberg's magisterial "A World At Arms" or Murray and Millet's comprehensive "A War To Be Won". That being said, it is indeed an excellent text, now in its third edition.
Written by author Michael J. Lyons, it comprises a very readable overview of every salient aspect in the war, albeit briefly, in all the political, diplomatic, economic, military and human dimensions in which the war was played out. Not only does it quite adequately detail the significant events precipitating the conflict, but also describes very well the manifest consequences of the defeat of both Germany and Japan. Lyons gives us a reader-friendly account of both European and Pacific campaigns, and provides a lot of interesting and useful connections between the two fronts.
Long in use, the book is generally regarded as being quite literate and yet eminently readable, hence its wide use in college classrooms. The text not only provides the kind of comprehensive overview students need to make sense of such an overwhelming historical phenomenon as WWII, but also serves to illuminate the mechanics behind the origins, course, and consequent long-term effects of that war, providing a well reasoned and balanced overview that while uncontroversial, also pulls few punches regarding causes and effects. I would recommend its purchase for anyone wanting a nice hardbound overview that is easy to read and also relatively kind to one's limited resources. Enjoy

Excellent Overview - A Must Read!.......2001-03-12
This text was required for one of my history classes. It is short, succinct, and loaded with valuable maps and photographs. I would highly recommend this text for anyone looking for a comprehensive overview of World War II. Lyons is a skilled, accessable author with a gift for making oft-reported information fresh and exciting.

Unless you're a mathematician, the chances of you reading any novels about geometry are probably slender. But if you read only two in your life, these are the ones. Taken together, they form a couple of accessible and charming explanations of geometry and physics for the curious non-mathematician. Flatland, which is also available under separate cover, was published in 1880 and imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, a Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and the limits of his world's assumptions about reality and comes to understand the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England. The further mathematical fantasy, Sphereland, published 60 years later, revisits the world of Flatland in time to explore the mind-bending theories created by Albert Einstein, whose work so completely altered the scientific understanding of space, time, and matter. Among Einstein's many challenges to common sense were the ideas of curved space, an expanding universe and the fact that light does not travel in a straight line. Without use of the mathematical formulae that bar most non-scientists from an understanding of Einstein's theories, Sphereland gives lay readers ways to start comprehending these confusing but fundamental questions of our reality.
Book Description
'Upward, yet not Northward.' How would a creature limited to two dimensions be able to grasp the possibility of a third? Edwin A. Abbott's droll and delightful 'romance of many dimensions' explores this conundrum in the experiences of his protagonist, A Square, whose linear world is invaded by an emissary Sphere bringing the gospel of the third dimension on the eve of the new millennium. Part geometry lesson, part social satire, this classic work of science fiction brilliantly succeeds in enlarging all readers' imaginations beyond the limits of our 'respective dimensional prejudices'. In a world where class is determined by how many sides you possess, and women are straight lines, the prospects for enlightenment are boundless, and Abbott's hypotheses about a fourth and higher dimensions seem startlingly relevant today. This new edition of Flatland illuminates the social and intellectual context that produced the work as well as the timeless questions that it raises about the limits of our perception and knowledge.
Download Description
Flatland is about a two-dimensional world in which geometric shpates are the main charaters. The Square is the narrator of the book and he tells of his world and his fantastic contact with the three dimensional world. Mildly amusing and though provoking, a wonderful read for everyone! This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. This eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable.

Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Flat is an exercise in science fiction geometry, if you like. It shows a denizen of a 2 dimensional world seeing what it would be like to exist in higher dimensions. An interesting mathematical and philosophical exercise. Some will definitely find this very odd, and rather quirky. If you don't know what a dimension means in this sense, give it a miss.
Wonderful experience.......2007-08-09
Smooth transaction, careful and fast shipping, very nice product, couldn't ask for a more wonderful buying experience. Thank you very much! A+++
A Valuable Idea for Science and Math Teachers.......2007-08-02
Abbott, the author, has the reader imagine three-dimensional structures from a distant horizontal perspective. The third dimension becomes unimportant, and can be dispensed with completely. Taking this further, we are left with a "society" of circles, triangles, and other 2-D geometric figures, all living in Flatland.
As a science and math teacher, I found this book an inspiration for thought-provoking questions, such as: How would you describe the sphere to someone living in Lineland or Flatland? How, for that matter, would you communicate the very concept of thickness to someone living in Flatland? Or volume?
Visualize a sphere crossing Flatland. It starts as a point, then a circle of expanding diameter, then a circle of decreasing diameter, then a point, and then finally nothing. Other 3-D figures can be visualized in comparable manner. The possibilities are endless!
My favorite book to teach.......2007-07-16
This book is such a great tool. I've used it for 10 years and it still gets my students excited about dimensions. They can't believe it was written over one hundred years ago and still, as they say, "blows their minds!"
A Good Book for Looking at the World Differently.......2007-07-05
This book at first is very dense. But once you get used to the writing style it becomes a great tool for thinking about perception. I especially like the section on shading and how that can determine what it is you are looking at. It is a short book but it does take a little a time to get through. Overall, it is a very good book.
Book Description
Nearly 300 speeches from nearly every historical era: Socrates, Julius Caesar, St. Francis, Martin Luther, Napoleon, Victor Hugo, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Fulton J. Sheen, Barbara Jordan, Malcolm X, Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela, Earl of Spencer, and many others offer provocative themes, historic parallels, and memorable quotations.
Customer Reviews:
The choice of the speeches included is part of the value of this collection and much can be learned from who and what is chosen.......2007-10-07
230 speakers, 278 speeches, over 800 pages taken from throughout history. Each speech has a short biographical note that precedes each speaker and offers some insight into why the speech is presented.
The introduction to the book offers a number of reasons to read this suggesting that it is a treasure house for public speakers and so on. I found it interesting to see what was picked for the specific authors.
When you list all of these mostly well-known and influential individuals in this book the very speeches chosen for the representation make a statement worth thinking about. For example was Socrates really the most eloquent in his speech when condemned to death or what overall outlook on life something that may have been overlooked in this book? Likewise Caesar for all that he did is captured only in his comments about "the treatment of Conspirators". The speeches put a label on those that made them through their inclusion and offer a unique view of history.
The book has a lot of surprises. Red Jacket's speech to the chiefs concerning the actions of the white missionaries is a pleasant surprise to find in this list. As expected you find several from Lincoln and Kennedy. Probably not expected by many would be speeches from Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini.
The book brings focus to many that we know well and to some that maybe we ought to know better.
A core academic and community library reference work........2000-02-03
This enlarged, revised edition gathers almost three hundred great speeches from nearly every historical era and nation from ancient to modern times, and makes for an outstanding volume. This edition adds fourteen important speeches delivered between 1974-97 and makes for an exciting display of messages.
