Excellent.......2007-07-28
This is a lovely story that is appropriate for all ages. My girls loved it. It is nice to have fantasy books that feature black girls. I was tired of all their books either having pictures of white children or being about being proud of being black. Sometimes they just want to read a fun fairy tale that happens to feature brown faces. My kids are two and four...not ready to be in the struggle just yet.

This is one of my favorites of this book series because it makes the whole princess stage that all little girls go through accessible to little girls of color. My four year old loves seeing that a princess can look like her. I was thrilled to find this book.

All Things Bright and Beautiful is an excellent book. The story line was clear and easy to follow. The art work is similar to the name of the book...bright and beautiful. You will enjoy reading this book to your children.

Excellent...with a warning for parents of very young kids.......2007-07-28
The JATS fairy tales are great. Be aware that they do use the word, "die" as a threat from the villians. This particular book describes Jack's mother as a "widow," a concept I have not discussed with my kids. I just skipped over that word, but a page or two later, the mother says that she is glad that foolish Jack's father is not there to see how silly he is. I accidentally read this before I knew what it was saying. I just let my kids think that Jack's dad was at work...this is what they assumed.

I purchased this book for my 3 year old niece. As I read the story, I came across a sentence that gives a reason for the inability of the giant to catch Jack. Get this... it was because the giant was drunk. Yes... they used the word drunk. I was horrified. What kind of thing is that to read to a small child? I know in today's world children will hear about (or maybe even see) someone being intoxicated. Perhaps this was in the original story of Jack and the Beanstalk; I can't say. But I will say that I omitted reading that sentence to my niece, removed the book from her things and put the book in the garbage.

This may be my favorite JATS fairy tale. The ending is a nice twist where Goldilocks learns an appropriate lesson without any scary consequences for breaking & entering the bears' cottage.

I really liked this book for my children! The drawings are beautiful and I loved that the bears made Goldilocks clean up her mess and then they walked her home. I highly recommend this and am buying a second copy for my son's class.

The drawings in this re-telling of the Goldilocks story are so cute! My 2-year-old daughter has really enjoyed the Jump At the Sun versions of fairy tales, and I'm grateful for stories with characters that look like her.

This is a lovely book for a preschool aged child. It was very clever how the writer made the name Goldilocks applicable to a child of color. It has an underlying message that a child should obey their parents and be willing to do their chores.

A Classic Redrawn .......2004-10-09
Through childhood, many fairytales, wives tales, and urban legends grace the ears and massage the minds of people of all cultures. Stories children treasure live on and mentor their own children for generations. Even though the basic storyline is not new, it continues to entertain. New illustrations, new twists in the plot, and additional or more colorful characters all combine to help the classics survive the time change and speak to young, modern minds. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, illustrated by John Kurtz, is one such example of an adapted classic.
We all know the story of Little Red Riding Hood, however, Kurtz has adapted the illustrations to suit our children in the African-American community. The main character is beautifully drawn, as well as is the supporting cast. Aside from the aesthetically pleasing pages and the wonderful, "Disney-esque" images, Kurtz also adjusts the story ever so slightly to teach children the importance of obedience. My only complaint with the book is that on a couple pages the pictures, as cool as they are, don't match with the story. Other than that, this redrawn classic is a good addition to the budding library of our children.

Nice Book for Kwanzaa! .......2004-11-30
Kwanzaa books are usually too detailed and authors forget to write some kind of entertaining text to go with their books. This one is light and breezy and young children should like it just fine. It makes Kwanzaa sound fun, not boring. Good Job!

This is a great book. The illustration and typesetting are gorgeous. There's just enough repetition to engage young minds, but not enough to bore an adult! And the message of expressing gratitude for our blessings is great. Highly recommend this one...

Siegelson's warm, lyrical, and effectively repetitious story about an African American autumnal celebration smoothly transitions from excited anticipation to consternation to elation. The ending is gratifying in a manner that celebrates the sharing of familial and communal relationships that span generations. Backed by Cohen's bright and moving visuals, this tale is great to read to small audiences. Another winner from a seasoned southern author.
