4 out of 5 stars Murder Most Foul.......2007-08-31

22 Hamish Macbeth novels and it would be difficult to pick a favorite. I enjoy them all and wait expectantly for the next to arrive on my doorstep. It is like opening the door to friends whom you've missed and having a good visit with them.
Hamish has lots of suspects when he finds the local charwoman who left water covering his kitchen floor bashed in the head with her own bucket. Inspector Blair manages to destroy what little evidence there might have been at the scene of the crime. Hamish had learned from his own experience the woman was not a good maid, so why was she so highly rated and employed by so many?
Before this one reaches it conclusion Hamish is on the point of handing in his resignation when he is stopped by a phone call from Elspeh, his reporter friend with the "sight." A rather drawn out ending brings tugs out of hiding to exact revenge on the talented Highland detective.
A fast and gentle read which never lets you down.

4 out of 5 stars Not up to my standard of "gentle" mysteries.......2007-07-23

I like MC Beaton because usually the peole murdered in her books are either despicable characters or someone I never "knew." In this book, one of the murder victims is an innocent. Though the question is actually raised, "how come someone innocent was murdered?", I like my lkysteries when the victim is a villain and the innocent live happily ever after. After all, mysteries for me are an escape from the realities of the violence reported in newspapers and t.v. But still these mysteries are charming and the cast of characyers have become my friends. the romance angle is getting a bit tiresome and unrewarding. Any reader who enjoys these stories should make sure to avoid the dvd video adaptations of the sstories. They are dreadful. I hope Ms. Beaton made a lot of money out of them because they totally changed the character of Hamish Macbeath, at least in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars CONFESSION OF A NEW READER!.......2007-07-02

Okay, I will admit it. I am a newcomer to this particular genre of novel, being relatively newly introduced to them by my wife. This is certainly the first work by M.C. Beaton I've read, therefore the first of the Hamish Macbeth Mysteries. I also have to admit that I have been missing a lot over the years! This work is simply fun to read! The story is simple but very well told. A maid, or charwoman, is hit over the head with her own mop bucket and murdered! So the tale begins. This author is an absolute master at the development of a character in a very short time with very few words. You get to feeling you know each and ever one of them quite well before the end of a page. This takes skill! I liked the simple plot line of this work. It was not hard to figure out that quite a number of the people living in Macbeth's village were extremely pleased that the woman was dead, including her poor husband. This left the story open for many, many very interesting suspects, all of whom could conceivably committed the crime. These suspects were all quite colorful and were a story within themselves. The author can be absolutely hilarious at times and the interaction between the author and his pets is great. I found my self enjoying this one and actually relaxing, which is the primary reason I read these novels. I have not much to compare it with, so I am giving it five stars simply because I liked it. I will certainly be reading more of this author's work!

4 out of 5 stars DEATH OF A MAID makes murder fun.......2007-05-30

A win at the church raffle leaves Police Constable Hamish Macbeth with the services of Mavis Gillespie, a vicious local gossip working as a maid --- although her snooping skills far outshine her cleaning abilities. When Macbeth discovers that Mrs. Gillespie has made off with a letter addressed to him from his ex-girlfriend, Elspeth, he decides enough is enough and vows to confront her with this little bit of thievery. Unfortunately, by the time he catches up to her, she lies dead in a pool of her own blood, the apparent victim of a fatal bucket bash to the head.

Macbeth now has the job of figuring out who murdered her, all the while knowing that his superior from nearby Strathbane, Detective Chief Inspector Blair, will undoubtedly take the credit --- as he always does. That doesn't really bother him, but a television crew intent on producing a documentary film on Hamish Macbeth certainly does. Comfortable in his role as village policeman, he curses his luck, for a well-run investigation with extensive media exposure could easily earn him a promotion --- the very thing he assiduously strives to avoid.

Soon, Elspeth, old flame and veteran journalist, shows up --- and with a new beau in tow. Macbeth pines for a return to the days of stoking the fire and tending his sheep, while his cat and dog make all the demands on him he would happily handle. But there's a murder case to solve.

Extraordinarily competent, while pretending to be a plodding policeman, Macbeth conducts a fine and thorough investigation, all the while trying to avoid Elspeth, Blair and the documentarians. He does so thorough a job, in fact, that he touches a raw nerve, sending the panicked killer into a downward spiral that leaves one reporter dead too. He wishes he knew what fatal piece of information the reporter had discovered.

As Macbeth works his way through the many witness interviews, he realizes, with mild surprise, the number of secrets that the Lochdubhians are harboring. And it begins to appear that Mrs. Gillespie had been unearthing those secrets rather than dusting furniture and mopping floors, for her bankbook reveals a sum that cannot be explained by a maid's modest earnings. It looks as though she had entered dangerous ground and become a blackmailer.

Macbeth finds there is no shortage of suspects. The victim's husband appears relieved by his wife's death. Her daughter sees a way to repair her ruined marriage now that her meddling mother is dead. Even the lady who runs the church bingo is not sorry that Mrs. Gillespie is gone. And there are myriad more. Good riddance, they all seem to say. Macbeth has a lot of sorting out to do.

Meanwhile, Elspeth keeps creeping into his thoughts. Try as he might, he cannot banish her from his mind. But what does his heart say? Is he simply jealous because there is another man in her life, or does he really want her back? He remembers how good they were together. But he also remembers they drove each other crazy. For now, he must forget about her and concentrate on finding this killer.

M.C. Beaton gives us delightful, refreshing, light reading. Sure, there's a dead body, but the victim deserved it. Plus, the killer is a despicable rogue. DEATH OF A MAID makes murder fun.

It's hardly the type of wedding Fiona MacLean dreamed of. No family, no guests, just a groom who's been dragged -- literally -- to the altar. But if marriage to Black Jack Kincaid, the handsome wastrel she'd sworn never to see again, will avert a bloody war between their clans, so be it. Surely she can share his bed without losing her heart....

Known throughout Scotland and London as a wild rogue, Jack is accustomed to waking in dire situations, but...married? Long ago, he and Fiona reveled in a youthful passion. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Silly, but still sexy.......2007-07-16

One thing about this book is that if you don't take it too seriously you will enjoy it just fine. Jack Kincaid, Black Jack, is a womanizing wastrel who is enjoying going through his late grandfather's money by gambling, drinking and carousing. Leaving the bed of one of his married conquests, a drunken Jack is thrown from his horse and thinks he is dreaming when he finds himself in front of a priest getting married to his childhood sweetheart Fiona MacLean. He still carries the wounds of a heart broken when Fiona refused to marry him after he took her virginity when they were teenagers.

Fiona is heartbroken over the death of her youngest brother Callum as the result of the centuries long feud between the Kincaids and MacLean's and knows the only way to stop the feuding is a marriage and child between her and Jack. She takes the oppurtunity when a drunken Jack thinks he is dreaming of her and gets him to the altar, to seal the deal she tells everyone she is already with child. When Jack regains consciousness he is understandably angry but when he finds out the marriage cannot be annuled decides to make the best of the situation and agrees to Fiona's suggestion that he get her pregnant and then she will leave and let him resume his life. The problem is that Fiona and Jack start developing feelings for one another but Jack is determined that this marriage will not alter his lifestyle. Fiona knows she will not accept an unequal marriage and so she starts going out on the town to gambling halls as well much to Jack's horror. Adding to their problems is one of Jack's jealeous ex-mistresses and a family enemy of the MacLean's. Just to keep things interesting Fiona's brothers arrive on scene to make sure Jack treats her right and the entire family seems to have a magical talent, controlling the weather by their emotions.

This was a light, fun book but if you want something with more emotional depth, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Start To New Series!.......2007-07-01

I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. I usually do not like elements in romance novels such as Fiona being able to alter the weather based on her moods, but that aspect of the book did not take away from my enjoyment of Fiona and Jack's story. I understand the complaint others have of Fiona being too judgmental of Jack considering she forced him into the marraige. I was able to tolerate this aspect of Fiona's character because she wanted him to take their marriage seriously because she loved him. Once I learned of the "powers" Fiona and her brothers had concerning the weather, I immediately dismissed the future books in this series. However, by the end of this book, I wanted to know more about her brothers and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series. Karen Hawkins' humorous and engaging writing style is a talent not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars scottish.......2007-06-27

Scottish books are becoming my favorite! Talk about being dragged to the alter - he literally was all to stop a fued between two families. At first I wasn't sure about the hero's character and wondered if he was going to turn out a true leading man. My doubts were snuffed out and this is a book I will tell all my friends to buy. If you love scotland and highlanders, be sure to read sabrina jeffries "beware a scot's revenge". And if you walk a little on the magical side - anything highlander by Karen Marie Moning.

1 out of 5 stars One Star.......2007-04-28

I've liked all Karen Hawkins' stories but this one was difficult to get through. Fiona MacLean wants to prevent a war between her family and the Kincaids following the death of her brother Cullom. This might have been better suited placed in a Medievil England setting instead Regency England it was hard to understand imagine a Scottish clan war a mist the gaming rooms of London High Society. Fiona thinks by marrying Jack Kincaid known as Black Jack, once they have a baby Fiona thinks it will prevent the MacLeans from taking revenge on the Kincaids. Fiona does this by kidnapping Jack and marry him without his consent while the "kidnapping" was amusing but there's also a thin line Karen Hawkins is walking having her hero kidnapped and married without his consent. I was curious to see how she got passed it. Unfortunately she doesn't. When Jack finds out he is understandable outraged and intents to find away out of the marriage in London. Fiona is outrage to learn Jack intends to contiune life the same as always going out gambling and carousing while I understand Fiona doesn't want an unfaithful husband what I don't understand is how she feels she should expect and demand a faithful husband from Jack considering she kidnapped him and married him without his consent. If you can get passed that part you'll probably enjoy the book but unfortunately for me I wasn't able to.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a Read.......2007-04-26

This book begins well - it has an interesting premise (a woman kidnaps a man and forces him to marry her), excellent humour, and interesting details and history surrounding the main plotline (like the MacLean curse of triggering storms with their temper and the hero and heroine's past relationship). The male lead, Jack Kincaid, is fairly typical but nonetheless likeable, as is the female lead, Fiona MacLean. Ms Hawkin's writing style throughout is very readable and engaging, and she writes great humour as well as really hot scenes, which I greatly enjoy in a romance novel.

These strengths alone carry the reader smoothly to the end of the story, which, even if it is a teensy bit anticlimactic (there is little drama despite Jack's bold declaration of "unleashing the full MacLean powers", we are never told much about Fiona's injury, and the capture of the villains seems a little too pat), is suitably heartwarming.

However, the novel has its shortcomings too, and they left me rather unsatisfied at the end of it. My chief grouse is that Fiona and Jack never really seem to interact as personalities (as opposed to objects of lust) or get to know each other - and because of this, I'm convinced they have a white-hot passion going between them, but unconvinced that they know each other well enough to actually be in love. Much of the novel also revolves around a singular point - that she doesn't want him to go out "carousing" like he used to as a bachelor. While this provides very interesting scenes where she goes out carousing as well, after a while it gets a bit tiring, especially since we're given very little grounds for this battle except that she doesn't like it and that he wants to prove a point.

All in all, though, the book is worth at least one read (or maybe two), although I'd advise against buying it to add to your collection because it doesn't have the emotional depth to hold up well to repeated readings.

Now, Alabama's favorite son has written a long-awaited cookbook that features his enticing Provençal-influenced southern food. More than 150 recipes range from the traditional--Spicy Green Tomato and Peach Relish, Spoonbread, and Pickled Shrimp--to the inspired--Slow-Roasted Black Grouper with Ham and Pumpkin Pirlau and Pork Loin with Corn Pudding and Grilled Eggplant. Desserts such as Bourbon Panna Cotta and Sweet Potato Tart with Coconut Crust and Pecan Streusel elevate the best of the South for cooks everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing cookbook.......2007-08-20

I'm just a regular mom who likes to plunk down with a really good cookbook and try new gourmet recipes to amaze and delight my family. Lets just say that my 3 year old toddler and husband look forward to dinner every night that I pull out Frank Stitt's cookbook. Some recipes make me crazy, especially when I have to flip through 3 different pages to get various related recipes such as sauces, but oh what heavenly delight if you persevere and see the recipe through to completion. I can't say enough good things about this book - makes one appreciate the time, effort and loving care that is evident in the recipes. The sauce gribiche is worth the price of admission. The book feels like an old friend, calling me every few days to try another recipe. What a fantastic chef. This cookbook rivals my other beloved and tattered cookbook " The French Recipe cookbook" by Clements and Wolf-Cohen. You will NOT be disappointed if you get this book. 5 star rating all the way.

Wow!! This cookbook rocks. I've recently bought over a dozen Southern cooking cookbooks and this is the BEST hands down. Frank Stitt's recipes are inspiring. No longer does Southern Food need to be somewhat bland and heavy. I'm ordering my Gourmet Cook daughter a copy for her birthday in a couple of weeks. I know she'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece - The Crown Jewel of my Cookbook library.......2006-11-15

Frank Stitt's Southern Table is truly a masterpiece. I am a Southerner and was raised on the wonderful flavors that form the recipes in this book. I love that Stitt showcases humble vegetables that can be found at any Southern farmer's market and presents them in impeccable fashion. His philosophy on using the freshest, in-season ingredients is wonderful advice for all cooks. I also keep this book on my coffee-table and I often read his charming writings on Southern food and the culture that surrounds cooking and eating in the South. I recommend this cookbook above all others. My family has adored everything I have made from this cookbook. I recommend the Lowcountry Red Rice, Pimento Cheese, All the cookie recipes, Spiced Pecans, and the fabulous section on perfectly mixed cocktails. This cookbook has got me planning a trip to Birmingham for the sole purpose of eating at the Highlands Bar and Grille.

5 out of 5 stars Very colorful, informative & complete!.......2006-11-14

This is a very thick book on the upscale restaurant Bottega in The Highlands area of Birmingham, Alabama. Soon I intend on actually visiting the restaurant, but until then, this book keeps me in tune with the restaurant. I can make their food at home as well as get a clear idea of the environment, cuisine and patrons who visit.

But when a split-second decision saves her from a terrifying attempt on her life, Jessi suddenly finds herself confronting six and a half feet of smoldering, insatiable alpha male.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-09-13

I am a sucker for these paranormal romance novels. I love the idea of being able to travel in time, to see things as they used to be. That love can win over everything. I think these novels take me back to romance novels of before as well. With the warring personalities. I like how strong Karen's characters are. Some times they get bogged down a bit with the emotional upheaval and their stubborness, but ultimately prevail in the end. I have enjoyed all of her books and now impatiently await the new ones!!!

With an amazingly delectable hero, a captivating heroine, and a playful, stay-up-till 2am story, this is a definite treat! Even though it is the 7th book in the Highlander series, I didn't feel disconnected and I can't wait to read the previous books in the series.
Thank you Ms Moning for this irresistible time-travel romp!

I read this book first in the series and then read the rest of them. I'm a sucker for romance, for intelligence and for poignancy and this had them all. When you let yourself think about anybody surviving 1100 years in a mirror and then imagine some of the horror and then the agony of finally having his shot at revenge and yet at the same time being faced with the dream he'll never have...well, it's powerful hard to put down.

LOVED Cian. I think that he and Adam and Adam's son were my absolute faves. The others were oh so close behind.

4 out of 5 stars Another terifically determined Fforde heroine!.......2005-10-06

I really enjoy Fforde's books, primarily because her heroines are strong, determined, and a little cranky sometimes. Even though Fforde's novels are light and fluffy for the most part, you can always count on Fforde to present a great protagonist.

Katie Fforde is a great author to read when you don't want depressing, when you don't want to think too hard, when you need a smile.

The only thing I didn't care for about Highland Fling was the sometimes in-depth information into the textile aspect of it; however, I understand there was a place for it and that those details were appropriate; they just bored me a little.

I will continue to read Fforde's offerings with pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Light & Warming Fun!.......2005-08-16

Genevieve ("Jenny for short") is a virtual assistant sent to the highlands to inspect the books and profits of a failing sweater company. She stays at Dalmain House where she gets to know its inhabitants a little more than she would have preferred. Lady Dalmain is an old shrew that treats her only daughter like a servant. Philip is the sweet, doting eldest son who does no wrong. Felicity is the agoraphobic who seethingly does everything her mother tells her and never stands up to herself. Iain is the rebel son who married under class and lives a "cottage love" life. Upon Jenny's arrival, things start to change for the better for everyone.

I loved Jenny - she was so caring, sweet and self-sacrificing for people who were basically strangers. Ross Grant was a treat and I loved how Jenny was so rude to him, totally out of character for her.

The book was very predictable, but oftentimes these light romance novels are. Other than that, I have no complaints! Highland Fling is funny, sweet, breezy, touching, at times very hot, and ultimately satisfying. What more do you want in a romance?

This was my first Katie Fforde novel, and based on it I will definitely read more from her.

3 out of 5 stars Fun even if it doesn't make much sense.......2004-09-03

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to trying some of Fforde's others.

This is basically a very light-hearted romance, with plenty of eccentric characters who become somewhat endearing once one knows them. The best part of the book is really the plot about trying to save a mill that has been mismanaged. The weakness is that the development of the romantic suspense does not fit in with what we know of the characters involved. We are told about their childhoods, etc. but there is no real effort to tie those factors into the story. Then one wonders why they are put in there. The heroine resists the pull of our romantic lead for reasons which make little sense overall.

Fortunately the tone of the book is so light and frothy that the illogical bits almost seem irrelevant

1 out of 5 stars She's done so much better.......2004-07-19

Katie Fforde's work is generally so much better than this annoying effort. The heroine's choices make NO sense, her motivations are childish in the extreme, and the whole book seems sloppy. Fforde's editor needs to work a little harder.

4 out of 5 stars Does just what it says on the label ............2004-06-15

If you like easy to read, but skilfully written holiday novels, then this is for you! It does just what it says on the label - entertains and amuses and is perfect for the beach or a plane journey.

It's the story of a "virtual assistant" (e.g. on-line secretary) who is sent to the far north of the Scottish Highlands in the cold and snow of the early winter to sort out a failing woollen mill. Our heroine encounters a cast of characters who range from the sensible to the sublimely impossible and, of course, she has a silly boyfriend whom she eventually dumps for a rich, sexy, gorgeous businessman.

Fforde's stories are always a pleasure: not great literature but very satisfying escapist reads. This is another one to enjoy whilst downing a pina colada on the beach!

Book Description

He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . .

An alluring laird...

He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart—until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length—but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.

A prisoner in time...

She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .

Well I love Karen Marie Moning's Highlander books. They are all really good!! however, this book made me mad. Hawk was a jerk, and Adrinne was just playing him for most of the book. If you want to read of good Moning book pick another one.

5 out of 5 stars BTHM - highlander series.......2007-08-09

I found this book on my mother's shelf years ago, read it out of boredom, and I now own the entire series. I found that the plot for Beyond the Highland Mist was interesting, the characters were captivating (ooooh that lovely Adam Black!) and the sexual scenes were steamy enough for even me to blush a bit. I haven't read a whole lot of other authors, but those that I have read don't compare to KMM, even in this first novel. I recommend this book and the rest of the series to anyone who enjoys a good book to whisk them away from their life (at least for an hour or two). As to the comments of the heroine being a drag on the book because of her attitude towards Hawk Douglas... pooey. If you are paying attention, KMM goes into detail describing how the lovely Adrienne ended up with a poor opinion of "beautiful men". Get this book, send the kids to bed, and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars oh those highland boys!.......2007-06-27

I am completely hooked on the highlander series by Moning. It has everything you could want out of a romance novel. Buy it, but let me warn you, you had better have the rest of the series on hand because you'll want to keep reading and reading them!

4 out of 5 stars Compelling and mythical romance.......2006-07-28

This is the second book in the Highlander series. It will definitely go in my special pile of keeper books to be re-read. Karen Marie Moning writes stories that cativate the reader and it is difficult to put the book down.

I enjoyed reading about Grimm, a berserker (this supernatural entity is explained in the book - I didn't know what it was before). He is tortured from his past and becomes a loner until he meets Jillian. She is his perfect soul mate and willing to help him accept who he is and who he can become. Great ending and delicious romance story!

3 out of 5 stars Slow start - predictable ending.......2006-05-22

The story of Grimm and Jillian. Grimm we first meet in Beyond the Highland Mist, where he has a minor roll. Here we learn Grimm's story. Grimm is a Berserker, a race of legenday Scottish warriors. Not understanding what he is, and believing it will lead him to madness and possibly murder Grimm spends years running from himself and a clan, the McKanes, that has vowed to hunt and destroy the line of warriors. Enter Jillian, Grimm's true mate. He however is afraid he will bring her nothing but pain and death and pushes her away at every opportunity. The first half of the book is simply Grimm's struggle with accepting who he is and Jillian's love. I really feared this would be the whole book as it was somewhat boring and predictable. You know she will eventually win.

The book really didn't get interesting until about half way through. At this point, Grimm and Jillian ride off to face their real threat, the McKanes. After wasting half the book on the struggle between Jillian and Grimm, Moning glosses over the fight between the McKanes and the Berserkers. There are a number of questions left unanswered, several sections I felt could have been expanded on and the ending was a let down. Not that they don't win, but all you have is a Grimm saves Jillian, then they beat the McKanes, literally that is pretty much what she wrote. While I am not wanting bloody details, I would have like the climax to have been a little more climactic.

While this book is not directly related to the Dark Highlander's series, references to Adam Black are made. I do not know if Moning plans to tie the Berserkers into the final battle she seems to be building to in the Dark Highlander series, but it could be an interesting addition.

5 out of 5 stars To tame a highland warrior.......2006-03-16

In this sequel to Beyond the highland mist, we follow Grimm. The tales of Berzerkers is novel and compelling. I look forward to another novel by Karen Marie Moning

Of all the books that I have read by K. Moning this is the least exciting. I enjoy her dark and torn characters and the way they are brought to life with detail. This book did not seem to come to life for me. Overall, it is a great read but, not as edgy as her other books

4 out of 5 stars I liked It!.......2007-04-05

I have enjoyed most all from this series by this author. Some were better than others, but I liked this one. At least it was
DIFFERENT! I thought it was a very nice story and it didn't seem preachy to me. Didn't seem to be on a cause, either. The story moves right along and, yes, it does involve child abuse. Seems to me there is only so many ways you can keep telling love stories in the highlands and, hey, this one I liked! I thought the author gave Payton a nice story.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but modern voice too loud.......2005-12-12

I've never written a review before, but felt I had to about this one. As both a sexual assault nurse and a lover of historical romance stories, I found this book interesting yet a bit disappointing at the same time. I think I got through only about 4 pages when I was ready to put it down. I read historical & time-travel romance novels as much, if not more, for the history, as I do for the romance. It allows me a few minutes each day to escape to an earlier time, without all the modern day gizmos & sensory overload. When an author's words & tone are not consistent with that time period, all enjoyment is lost.

While I have no comment one way or the other about modern day political correctness, it has no place in 15th century Scotland, especially when you look at the social mores & values of the day. They did not view things as we do today. If this were a time travel romance, with the heroine being a modern day woman transported back in time, I could see it. But as it stands, I believe much of it was inconsistent with the views of the time. I did finish reading, and am glad I did, but overall, was still disappointed.

In the beginning, I liked the heroine's spunkiness, and found the situation Payton found himself in to be quite humorous. I like my fictional heroes to be a little less than perfect. However, I found the secondary characters to be much more interesting and well-rounded. I would love to read a book about Callum, as an adult in the 1400's, and learn how he was able to overcome the abuse. I applaud the author's use of such a theme as child sexual abuse. However, reading the book, I felt like I was reading the words of a modern day woman on her soap box, not someone from the 15th century. And no matter what time period, I have a problem with any person, real or fictional, discussing their sexual relationships with a child. Call me too old fashioned, but that really turned me off!

1 out of 5 stars not worth reading.......2005-11-17

very disappointing, I like spice, but to me it was porno, threw it out!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not the Payton Murray I expected!.......2005-05-23

If you have read the other Highland Series featuring the Murray daughters, you would already be familiar with Sir Payton Murray, supposedly the bonniest lad in the whole of Scotland. In Highland Angel, we finally get to see this revered knight meet his downfall in the form of a damsel in distress.

On his way to a rendezvous, Kirstie MacIye, who claims her husband just tried to murder her, approaches Payton. He listens to her story and was aghast to find out her husband's evil doings especially of finding out the abominable things he does to children. As a man of honor, Payton cannot help but offer himself as Kirstie and the abused children's champion. So he takes her and the children home and offers them his protection.

As to be expected, both feel a strong attraction for each other. For Payton, it is the first time in his life that he had to work hard in seducing a woman. For Kirstie, she is frightened of her strong feelings for Payton partly due to her marriage vows and Payton's longstanding reputation for having bedded half the women in Scotland. She worries that he sees her as nothing but just another addition to his ever-growing collection of women.

HIGHLAND ANGEL, while brimming with sensuous love scenes, lacks the excitement that I enjoyed from other Highland books by Hannah Howell particularly the stories of Payton's kinswomen - Elspeth (HIGHLAND VOW), Avery (HIGHLAND KNIGHT) and Gillyanne (HIGHLAND BRIDE). Since reading Highland Vow, I've wanted to read Payton's story but this book unfortunately didn't live up to my expectations. Payton seemed rather jaded in this story compared to how he's been portrayed in the previous books. And Kirstie, although likable enough, just didn't endear herself to me. I was expecting some really funny verbal spats between them but they were sadly lacking. I found the children funnier than the main characters.

It's quite disappointing because the first few pages seemed promising only to go downhill and then kind of pick up on the last third. I'm giving this 2.5 stars (extra half star for Gilly and Connor's appearance).

1 out of 5 stars no 'highlands' in 'highland angel'.......2003-07-01

I have never read any of Ms. Howell's other "highland" titles, and having read this one, I probably will not waste my time.
I have read some awful historical romances, and this one would have to fall into that category. It certainly doesn't deserve the distinction of being called "historical" and even stretches the line to being a period piece.
This is one of those books where it looks like the characters and plot line have abolutely no relevance at all to the location or time frame that the work is supposedly set. What is Scots about this story? Some obscure hints at fueds that any logical discussion could forestall [as it eventually does!] is the only nod to clans that the author throws out to us. Give me a break!
I get absolutely no feeling for Scotland or Scots at all from reading this book. Whether this is weak research or just weak writing I can't say.
I'm sorry, but this story is not even remotely plausible. No doubt sexual abuse and child abuse have been rampant throughout history, but the author's use of this topic sounds like she is jumping on a soapbox. She lost me very early on with the way she dealt with this issue.
If you enjoy stories that evoke the beauty and majesty of the Scottish Highlands, don't be taken in by the title as I was, and skip this one.

1 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2007-03-28

There are a few things that I find, that although the writing is good, the story is lacking . . .

1. I find it hard to believe that Gisele had been as abused as she was, especially when Nigel decides to seduce her and she is overcome. Perhaps someone who has been scarred would be more resistant and not as easy. I was hoping for a more realistic approach. Gisele, despite having only been with her husband, and given the era that they live, is quite able to understand fully her trauma and is quite confident that she will conquer it. The whole psychology is completely off and I didn't believe this character for a second.

2. What bothered me the most was that love scenes were basically the main focus, as though the danger they were in was an afterthought. More scenes ended with Nigel telling Gisele to sleep after their lovemaking than I could tolerate.

3. The story drags, with reiteration after reiteration of thoughts and feelings these characters were going through that it was exhausting. Perhaps if more scenes of danger or conflict took place, it could be an interesting read.

4. The ending was anticlimactic. After their grand journey from France to Scotland, I would hope for a more powerful resolution to the conflict. Yet, this book left me feeling as though I could find better reading at a fan fiction site - and truth to tell, I've read better.

5 out of 5 stars Murray brother's Trilogy.......2006-06-20

I'm a new reader of Hannah Howell's books and I couldn't be happier!

This is the second book of the Murrary brother's Trilogy. Highland Destiny is the first and Highland Promise is the third.

Nigel Murray saw through her masquerade from the first: a young woman trying to pass herself off as a page. It almost worked - until she was unmasked in battle with the English, at the point of a sword. Recklessly Nigel saved the raven haired beauty whose secrets now endangered them both. He spirited her off to Scotland, determined to erase the terror he tasted in her kiss.

Gisele knew the dark side of men, having barely escaped the brutality of her highborn husband, Lord Deveau. Now, with Deveau murdered and a price on her head, she was every man's prey - hunted for a crime she did not commit. Nigel is her only refuge, a handsome stranger who challenged her with a fiery sensuality that burned all fear in it's wake. But to truly trust him, Gisele must put the past behind her, and let her heart accept the simple truth . . . of his undying love.

This was such a fun and enjoyable read for me! The complete trilogy is wonderful!

3 out of 5 stars Good but dragged in some parts (Murray Brothers # 2).......2005-04-29

Seven years ago, Nigel Murray left his beloved Scotland to become a mercenary, offering his sword and fighting skills to any French lord who pays the most. But when he wakes up one morning to find himself sprawled in the mud, having spent all night boozing with no recollection of how he got there, he knew it was time for him to go home and face reality. While deep in thoughts, he hears voices and checks to see whom they belong to. He spots two people deep in conversation but knew instantly that the one dressed like a lad is a woman.

Gisele Deveau is a hunted woman. Falsely accused of the gruesome death of her wealthy husband, she has been running away for a whole year. When Nigel ends up saving her life, she knows that he is her only refuge for many of her own family have turned away from her and has even decried her a murderess.

Realizing that Gisele's life is in extreme danger, Nigel is overcome with the need to protect her, especially when he learns that she is pretty much on her own. And although she fears men in general having suffered pain and humiliation from the hands of her husband, Gisele knows she has no choice but to trust the man who has entangled himself in her troubles.

Little do they know that they would be faced with another trouble: that of their growing attraction to each other. Nigel is torn and confused about what he feels worried that he is still holding out for a dream in Gisele's form who is the living embodiment of Maldie, with her dark curls and green eyes so much like the woman whose ghost he has clung to for years. Gisele, on the other hand, is fearful to put her trust in another man after what she has been through before.

In this second book of the Highland Series featuring the Murray brothers, we learn of what happened to Nigel since he left Donncoill after losing Maldie to his brother Balfour. It was a little sad to read about how he has immersed himself in drinking and womanizing in an attempt to ease his heartache so it was good to finally see him find happiness in the arms of Gisele.

Just like the first book, HIGHLAND HONOR is full of adventure and passion. Gisele is a likable heroine, very similar to Maldie but with a sharper tongue. Both characters are strong and well-matched and as passionate as the first book's characters. I must say though that I found some parts dragged a bit, especially while they travelled back to Scotland. But I enjoyed the homecoming scene and was happy to see the old characters from HIGHLAND DESTINY.

4 out of 5 stars What a Story!!!!!.......2005-03-27

This was my first Hannah Howell novel and it will not be my last!
This book had everything I look for in a romance story. The stroy was orginal and well written. Gisele had been accused of killing her husband and while on the run she encounters a Sir Nigel Murray. She reluctantly accepts his help. While the are eluding the men who want to capture and or kill her Nigel helps Gisele heal the emotional wounds that her cruel husband had inflicted on her.

Gisele had suffered but her sprit was still strong. She was smart and brave. She suffered greatly but I think that it made her an even more endearing heroine.

Nigel was brave, smart and a true hero. Although he questioned his motives for helping Gisele(I won't give his worries away) He was always honorable towards Gisele and constanly risked his life to save her.

I can't wait to read more of the Highland series.

Sensuality rating 3.5 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars This was as good as the first in the series.......2000-08-08

Having read all four of the "Highland" series, this and the first stand out as the best. When reading a series, it's often easy to mix characters up from one book to the next because they are usually so similar but I found Nigel and Gisele unique and interesting. I liked the coming home scenes because it allows the characters to not take themselves too seriously.

On a Fourth of July picnic with his human family, McDuff, a beloved but trouble-mongering white terrier, inadvertently allows "silent invaders" (namely, ants) to make off with the entire contents of the lunch basket. Luckily, McDuff has a way with strangers (and their picnic baskets), and in no time flat, he's finagled an invitation from a lonely older man to share his meal with the family.

Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's series about the earnest pooch and his expanding community of friends and family harkens back to quainter days, when baby carriers were buckled into cars with leather straps and kind gentlemen didn't mind sharing their fried chicken and devil's food cake with strangers. Jeffers's inviting paintings of 1930s cars and fashions, and of course the little white dog himself, are warm and appealing. On a Fourth of July picnic with his human family, McDuff, a beloved buttrouble-mongering white terrier, inadvertently allows "silent invaders" (namely, ants) to make off with the entire contents of the lunch basket. Luckily, McDuffhas a way with strangers (and their picnic baskets), and in no time flat, he'sfinagled an invitation from a lonely older man to share his meal with thefamily.Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's series about the earnest pooch and hisexpanding community of friends and family harkens back to quainter days, whenbaby carriers were buckled into cars with leather straps and kind gentlemendidn't mind sharing their fried chicken and devil's food cake with strangers.Jeffers's inviting paintings of 1930s cars and fashions, and of course thelittle white dog himself, are warm and appealing. 5 out of 5 stars McDuff Saves the Day.......2007-07-05

As with all 'McDuff' stories, this book is very well drawn, and a child could tell it to an adult based on the pictures in the book, after the child had heard the story a few times. It is charmng, friendly telling of a fun family outing. All McDuff books would be good in daycares for story time!

5 out of 5 stars A Dog's Life: Everything Goes McDuff's Way!.......2005-01-31

McDuff, the irrepressible White Highland Terrier, joins owners Fred, Lucy, and their little baby for a traditional Fourth of July picnic in this immensely satisfying book. Susan Jeffers' beautiful rich colors, blend of comic strip panels and large-format pictures, and attention to period accuracy convincingly portray the post-war patriotism, hope, and economic prosperity of the late 1940's and early 1950's. Her drawings evoke Norman Rockwell, Boy Scout magazines, and the woodblock pictures that graced early children's books, and they are a major factor in the book's huge appeal.

Rosemary Wells once again writes a McDuff series book with humor, warmth, and just a bit of mischief, qualities found in her famous "Max and Ruby" series (e.g., "Max's Dragon Shirt"). There's Lucy and Rick tomfoolery in the opening scenes as McDuff and Fred keep switching seats during the drive. Finally:

"Fred had to sit in the backseat with the baby and the chicken. 'He always gets the front seat in the end,' said Fred. McDuff stretched out in the front seat and fell into a sausage-squirrel dream."

Wells and Jeffers also pull off a clever perspective switch as we see McDuff's version of how the picnic disappeared. In McDuff's version, marauding ants "penetrated the picnic basket by the hundreds. In a few short minutes, the picnic was gone." We see five ants (only 5!) ferreting away a sandwich, and organized, orderly lines of ants absconding with cookies, candy, and cupcakes. Jeffers, as masterful with facial expressions as with large-scale compositions, shows McDuff conveniently looking away, trying hard to look innocent.

And just how does McDuff save the day? By eating the meatballs of neighboring picnicker Mr. DiMaggio. (The authors go a little heavy on an Italian stereotype here.) After DiMaggio yells for help, the family joins him in a generously shared, copious lunch. As now expected from the ever-fortunate dog, McDuff gets a turkey-and tomato sandwich out of it! A glorious fireworks display ends this idyllic Fourth, as Fred, once again, winds up in the front seat. This is an exceptional book, with outstanding pictures, imaginative humor, and a gentle but compelling narrative.

4 out of 5 stars Wells' adorable Westie is a day saver........2003-07-02

I really enjoyed reading this book to 16 preschoolers at the Festus Public Library in Festus, Missouri. As a storytime book, McDuff Saves the Day makes for a fun and entertaining read. The artwork and story are beautiful and creative. The plot is charming, simple and realistic, giving McDuff (a fluffy white Westie) a perfect opportunity to be the cute dog that he is. This is my first McDuff story and I thouroughly enjoyed it. All dog lovers should have this in their children's book collection.
In this adventure, McDuff celebrates the Fourth of July with his family: Lucy, Fred and the baby. A perfect day for a picnic turns into a series of mishaps that leaves the family without a picnic and a cranky baby. By the end of the story, McDuff has found a way to have a picnic and make a new friend. Fred still complains though, because McDuff always gets to ride in the front.

4 out of 5 stars Woa! This book will blow you away!.......2003-04-10

I love this book! I like when McDuff has to sit by the baby then on Lucy's lap and then Fred has to sit in the back seat and McDuff sits in front. My name is Fred and Fred's name is Fred!Mcduff steals everyone's picnic because his picnic was stolen by ants. He steals a man's food so Lucy and Fred come eat with the man and the man isn't lonely and Lucy and Fred get food and watch fire works!

5 out of 5 stars A fun and zany tale.......2002-08-05

Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers' McDuff Saves The Day takes place on July 4th and tells of the bouncy dog's plans to celebrate. McDuff's ride in the family car is particularly hilarious and realistic as he bounces between seats, baby, and chicken versus marrowbone. A fun and zany tale.
