Book Description
Since the beginning of the diaspora, the myriad of communities throughout the world where Jews settled have influenced Jewish life and art. This exchange between Jewish and non-Jewish cultures has generated a rich variety of Judaica, however it was only in the late nineteenth century that a conscious attempt was made to establish Jewish museums to preserve the Jewish heritage. Jewish Museums of the World celebrates these important museums. This large format book showcases the incredible array of Jewish art, manuscripts, books, ceremonial objects, and historic artifacts that have been produced and collected in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Featured museums include: The Jewish Museum, New York; Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Beth Hatefutsoth, Tel Aviv; and the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam. 250 four-color illustrations, as well as a directory with phone, fax, and website information on the 200 museums visited in this book are included.

Beautiful, but costly.......2006-01-18
A lovely coffee-table book. Weighs a ton! While the pictures are beautiful, there are surpringly few of them. Even the text is scantier than might be expected -- the type is very large! What's there is fine -- but for the price I might have expected more.
Book Description
In 1977, inspired by Alex Haley, Suzan Wynne set out to learn about her Jewish roots in Europe. Her curiosity about her Galician ancestors turned into an obsession, yielding discoveries valuable not only to her immediate family, but anyone interested in Jewish genealogy.
If you have wanted to know more about the history of the Jewish community in Eastern Europe, or you have thought about tracing your own origins, you'll find a wealth of information in The Galitzianers: The Jews of Galicia, 1772–1918.

Customer Reviews:
bird watching.......2007-01-05
Loved this simple book with pictures and information about OK birds. I love feeding and watching birds.
Not an overall reference, but excellent for its purpose.......2002-06-17
You could say this publication (not really a "book") is a cow. That's because it is out-standing in the field! :-)
The book is not intended as a guide to learn everything about birds, it is intended as a pocketable reference you can take with you. It fits neatly in my front pants pocket, and is stiff and heavily plasticized so that it will withstand wetness and rough handling. The bird data is very limited--A single side view of each bird species, with the name below. For the price, and for this purpose, I think it is hard to beat. You will want to supplement it with a more complete and bulkier field guide, and hopefully with a large non-field book of information on the life and habits of each species--For that purpose, I recommed Kaufman's LIVES OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS or the similar Sibley book.
Minimal detail.......2001-09-26
This is a pamphlet and in my opinion not worth the money. It will fit in a backpacks for quick identification of birds, but it really stinks for learning more about Oklahoma birds.
Product Description
Learn about and identify birds using Stan Tekiela's state-by-state field guides. The full-page, color photos are incomparable and include insets of winter plumage, color morphs and more. Plus, with the easy-to-use format, you don't need to know a bird's name or classification in order to easily find it in the book. Using this field guide is a real pleasure. It's a great way for anyone to learn about the birds in your state.
Customer Reviews:
great service!.......2007-09-13
The book was sent in a timely manner and it was in the promised condition.
Easy to use.......2007-07-17
I love this little book. Birds are listed by color and then size. It makes for very easy and quick IDs. The color photos of each bird are also immensely helpful in makeing IDs. I have already ID four different birds that I have been seeing in my back yard for years but haven't found in other books. If you live in Oklahoma, this is the reference guide to have!!!
Great Little Book - Beautiful Illustrations & Easy to Use.......2007-05-15
This is a great book for our family. We are novice bird watchers, but placed bird feeders around our home and have identified several birds using this book.
It's simplicity makes it so usable. The birds are classified by color first then shape or activity. The pages are "tabbed" by color so you simply turn to the appropriate color tab and determine which bird you are looking at.
We also have the National Audubon book and find it more difficult to use. Their system is to categorize the birds by shape or activity first and them color. We find that the bird is long gone by the time we figure out whether is shaped like a "perching bird" or a "swallow like" bird.
It is just simpler to begin with the obvious - what color is the bird? and then turn to the corresponding pages. The book is easy for older children to use. We find that the more success we have the more we remember to open the book and identify that bird at the feeder.
I think I stuck this book in someone's stocking one Christmas, but we have all enjoyed it!
National Geographic Field Guide of Birds of North America.......2007-05-07
I have just recently purchased this field guide, and am enjoying it very much. I do wish that it included nesting habits but other than that it is a great book. I am new to bird watching and this book is very helpful, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys birds, even if they have other guides. I don't think a person can ever have too many books.
Specialized, but excellent!.......2002-08-04
Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is that it is extremely specialized--It is prepared with the goal of helping you identify in the field birds frequently spotted in Oklahoma. The book has a two-page spread on each species, the left side is a photo of the bird (possibly with insets of different morphs, juveniles, or the opposite sex), and the right side is a page packed with information. Each species has short descriptions of key facts about the species. If the male and female of a species are very different in appearance and have dramatically different dominant colors, each gets a page spread (with photograph) in the appropriate color section. Each species layout includes an Oklahoma map with ranges where the bird is found in different seasons.
I mention color section, because the book is organized by predominant color. If you see a bird that is mostly yellow, you turn to the "yellow" section of the book. Page edges are marked to enable you to do this quickly. Look through the photos in that section, and hopefully you will be able to make a quick match. For me, this system works very well.
The book is fairly small, so it can easily be carried in the field. I do wish the binding and pages were more waterproof. I suspect it will need replacement sooner or later. But for this price, I can afford that down the road!
The book doesn't try to do a lot of things, but the few things it does, it does very well. It will do a good job of helping you ID common birds found in Oklahoma. It won't identify rare strays or accidentals, and it won't be much use if you are trying to bird in Connecticut! But within this limited sphere, it is an excellent value.
Book Description
This is the first guide to dragonflies and damselflies of the south-central United States. The book covers 263 species, representing more than half of the North American fauna. The area of coverage significantly overlaps with other regions of the country making this book a useful aid in identifying the dragonflies and damselflies in any part of the United States, Canada, or northeastern Mexico.
More photographs of damselflies in North America appear here than in any other previously published work. All 85 damselfly and 178 dragonfly species found in the region are distinguished by photographs, numerous line drawings, keys, and detailed descriptions to help with identifications. Features include:
- Discussions of habitats, zoogeography, and seasonality
- Details on dragonfly and damselfly life history and conservation
- An introduction on studying and photographing dragonflies and damselflies
- An entire section devoted to the external anatomy of dragonflies and damselflies
- Species accounts organized by family into sections on size, regional and general distribution, flight season, identification, similar species, habitat and biology and ecology
- Range maps for each species, as well as an extensive bibliography and a list of resources for further study
Customer Reviews:
Dragonfly guide review.......2007-09-17
I have several guides for birds, butterflies, snakes, reptiles and amphibians. I just started learn about dragonflies this year and this is one of the best guides I have seen. In fact, it was highly recommended by an individual who has a Masters Degree in dragonfly study. I recommend it for individuals just starting out with dragonflies as the photos are great but it also provides enough information (range maps) to let you narrow down and identify the more difficult species.
The Texas Odonata Bible.......2006-12-23
This field guide is the one to own. It covers not only all the dragonflies of Texas and the Southcentral US, but all the damselflies as well. The photographs are superb and this make for easy identification of species in the field. However, because of these pluses, the result is a rather sizable guide that is just a bit too heavy to really qualify as a handy field guide. If you can deal with its size and weight, it more than makes up for this handicap in thes helpful information it provides. The only drawback and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is because it is a tad less user friendly for the novice or non-professional (i.e. The species identification keys are a bit confusing). Nevertheless, it is destined to become the standard to measure all other guides.
A Complete Guide to South-Central Odonates.......2005-11-08
As an admirer of dragonflies and damselflies I was quite delighted to find this book by John C. Abbott. It is a mix of the very technical and (at least in part because of the 64 plates of magnificent color photos) the very useful for the non-specialist. The range maps are invaluable as a way of adding clues for the identification of similar species. The line drawings of anatomical parts are important in separating closely related species and the glossary of terms, the check list, and the large bibliography round out a very useful or even indispensable volume for the dragonfly watcher. In short, this book is a serious guide to an area with the highest odonate diversity in the United States. "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States" simply is a must for anyone interested in the odonate fauna of the five states involved. Its production, along with at least three earlier regional and national books on the subject, is a testimonial to the growing popularity of these beautiful and fascinating insects.
A serious book for the serious reader.......2005-08-20
This is not a book that you can skim; rather, it is one intended for the serious student of Odonata in Texas. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, it covers everything you might want to know about the dragonflies found in Texas.
Be warned, though, that you cannot approach this book lightly. The author uses scientific terms liberally: you will have to spend time acquiring the vocabulary.
For the serious Texas "Odo-nut" this is an absolutely essential part of your library.
Customer Reviews:
Oklahoma Bird Life - a delightful reference.......2002-03-18
Oklahoma Bird Life is a delightful reference. Whenever a pair of birds begins nesting in the yard, I head straight for this book. Oklahoma Bird Life provides info on the birds' range, migration, habitat, # of eggs in a brood, incubation periods, fledge times, and what the birds eat. The narrative stories make reading about the birds a pleasure. For example, the authors tell a wonderful story about Carolina Chickadees in their own yard. The color plates and numerous photos bring the book to life and help with identification. While I live in Georgia, Oklahoma Bird Life includes most species of birds, and I am never disappointed.
The information in Oklahoma Bird Life enabled us to postpone a roofing job for 2 weeks to allow robins to fledge. I highly recommend Oklahoma Bird Life to people who enjoy learning about birds. It is much better than a list of facts, as the stories make it so delightful.
Book Description
Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor pursuit in America. This landmark volume, Oklahoma's first breeding bird atlas, offers both amateurs and ornithologists a wealth of information about Oklahoma bird species and their distributions. Lavishly illustrated with over 200 color photographs and 200 color maps, the Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas is as attractive as it is informative.
During the years 1997-2001, more than 100 volunteer birders and professional researchers surveyed nearly 600 locations across all regions of Oklahoma. Their careful records form the basis of the maps in this volume, which show at a glance the breeding distribution of bird species both common and rare in Oklahoma. Detailed species accounts, illustrated with stunning photographs as well as maps, provide information on plumage, habitat, nesting habits, eggs, and the young.
An invaluable reference for birders, ornithologists, and natural resource specialists, the atlas will be useful both today and in the future for understanding changes in bird population over time.
The Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas is the result of a cooperative effort between the Oklahoma Biological Survey and the Sutton Avian Research Center.
