Book Description

Eleven-year-old Sallie March is a whip-smart tomboy and voracious reader of Western adventure novels. When she and her sister Maude escape their self-serving guardians for the wilds of the frontier, they begin an adventure the likes of which Sallie has only read about. This time however, the "wanted woman" isn't a dime-novel villian, it's Sallie's very own sister! What follows is not the lies the papers printed, but the honest-to-goodness truth of how two sisters went from being orphans to being outlaws—and lived to tell the tale!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sure to Appeal to Adventure Seeking Girls! Don't miss it!.......2007-08-10

Much like the "dimer novels" Sallie enjoys reading in this novel, "The Misadventures of Maude March" gets off to a rollicking start and continues at this fast and furious pace. Bank robberies, mountain lions, ornery mules, shooting, snake attacks, outlaw gangs--it is full of everything a reader could want. When Sallie and Maude are orphaned by the stray bullet from a dimer hero Joe Harden, they are sent to live with the preacher who sees them as potential maids. Anxious to marry off Maude, the sisters decide to escape in search of long lost Uncle Arlen. Stealing two horses and disguised as boys, they fall into one wild escapade after another. Interspersed are highly exaggerated newspaper articles about Maude's escapades. With its fast action, humor, fully developed and strong heroines, it is a perfect novel to suggest to those readers looking for more than a girl wants boy, chases boy, falls in love type novel.
A great read aloud as well, and one that has enough excitement to appeal to male listeners. A thoroughly enjoyable book, worth 5+ stars!

5 out of 5 stars A Kid's Review.......2006-07-03

This is such a fun book to read! Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The story follows two girls, Sallie and Maude March, after their guardian, Aunt Ruthie, is accidentally shot and killed. With no other living kin, the girls set off to look for their long-lost Uncle Arlen, who supposedly lives in Independence, Missouri. They have to brave mountain lions, snowstorms, violent gangs of sharpshooting teenagers, nosey women and much more, all while Maude is being chased for stealing horses! This is a great action-packed adventure that both girls and boys will love!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!! .......2006-06-07

This book is a fast paced thriller set up in the old west. When I opened the book and saw the lining that looked like an old newspaper I knew it was gonna be good. Maude is the down to earth sister while all Sally wants is an adventure. This "dimer" is one book I would recommend to anyone! I'd give it 6 stars and I plan on reading it a second time!

5 out of 5 stars Heading into the sunset.......2005-10-31

If Louis L'Amour were still alive and if he wrote books for girls, this is perhaps what he'd come up with. It's full of authentic detail, rip-roaring action, personable young heroines, with an enduring respect for books, words, learning and reading. While not quite a Western (it's all East of Independence, MO) it has the elements western-lovers will savor: fast horses, harsh weather, snakes that won't die, sharp-shootin' gals, spunky dialogue, and a "git r done" attitude and an ethically satisfying ending. A great readaloud for middle school, and boys will love it as much as girls. It's like Lemony Snicket on horseback!

My favorite part was when Jack and Annie figured out that the book they had was written by Slim Cooley.

This was a very great book, because it was a good story.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Annie & Jack find out that there's a rattlesnake in a ghost town and they have to hide from some people. And they find a piano that's playing all by itself. And we don't know what ...was playing it. It's a surprise for you, because you might find out. And I might find out too, because I have it at home. I have a lot of Magic Tree House books at my house. ...

Book Description

In this story, Henty has crafted a rousing adventure story drawing on real-life cowboy stories. Henty accurately describes the life of the true American frontiersman, transporting the reader back ot the early days of the Wild West with enough mystery thrown in to capture the reader's imagination.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tale.......2004-01-27

When it seems that tales of the old west just keep on repeating themselves, this wonderful tale gives the American West a new light. G.A. Henty (the boy's historian) gives this tale a unique twist but yet keeps it within historical boundaries. Some may say that this book is a work of fantasy like most western tales. In one sense this is true as Henty uses fictional characters, but the story itself is based off of the experiences of a relative of Mr. Henty (as he stated in the preface). When one reads this tale full of gunfights, wildfires, horse races, round ups, Indian raids, and daring rescues, one would say it still sounds way too impossible. Henty understood this and stated in the preface, "in treating of cowboy life, indeed, it may well be said that truth is stranger than fiction." The tale is one worth reading largely to the sacrifice that men made for women in those days. In some instances within the book, the hero and many others are faced with the situation of saving women and children from a band of Indians, and later two young ladies from a group of outlaws. In both cases many men put their lives at stake, knowing there was little chance of survival, for those who were weaker than them. This is true Godly manhood at its fullest! Some may find a problem with the cowboys mention and use of liquor and tobacco. Let me say that tobacco was generally accepted in the days of Henty, and no one knew what it could really do to a person. Secondly the use of liquor was common in the days of the west, and Henty wanted to keep his tale accurate to the time of the work. It can also be said that Henty mentions many times the negative benefits of the drink. This story is one that you and all those who will come after you will enjoy. I highly recommend this tale for anyone wanting to read a western that is not only profanity free, but historical in setting as well.

5 out of 5 stars The True Wild West Revealed.......2000-06-14

My family and I read this book together, and found it to be a very captivating western mystery. The reality of real cowboy life presented in the book, makes the Hollywood cowboy look like a romticized story character. The wild, wild west will never be the same for us. Henty has the ability to paint colorful pictures in the mind, without going into unnecessary, gory detail. A wonderful book for the whole family.

Book Description

In 1846, before he became the first great chronicler of the American frontier, Francis Parkman headed West to follow the trail of the pioneers making their way to Oregon and California. When he got to the Rocky Mountains, Parkman and his party of two turned south, traveled down the Front Range, and came back via the Santa Fe Trail to Missouri. The Oregon Trail recounts a trove of page-turning adventures along the way. Parkman frequently was lost, very nearly starved, narrowly escaped Indian war parties—and clearly had the time of his life. “A month ago,” he writes along the way, “I should have thought it rather a startling affair to have an acquaintance ride out in the morning and lose his scalp before night, but here it seems the most natural thing in the world.”

The Oregon Trail, ranked number 31 on Adventure's top 100 classics list, remains a popular favorite a century and a half after publication. Accessible and handsomely designed, this new edition also features an exclusive introduction by adventure historian Anthony Brandt that illuminates the text with details about Parkman's role in popularizing the American West to a generation of pioneers as well as his vast influence on subsequent historians and writers.

The West as it was when The White Man first saw it; a vivid, personal account

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what I expected.......2007-05-13

I ordered this book based on the film, " The Oregan Trail," which I enjoyed watching. The book is a good follow-up to the movie, making much of the content even more real for me.

4 out of 5 stars The Wild West.......2006-10-13

Parkman's travelogue on the Great Plains is a major work of life among the Native Americans. His descriptions are honest and capture a society that was fading even while he was writing. The book had a major impact on the way that non-westerners saw the Great Plains. This was both good and bad. Parkman wrote through the lens of a Boston aristocrat and was full of prejudices against those who did not meet his standards. This was dangerous in that many who read about the "backwardness" of the Native Americans used this as justification for "civilizing" them. Although this was probably not Parkman's intention, it was a consequence of his writing. In addition, he promoted the hunting of buffalo for sport, which led to the decimation of the buffalo heards on the Plains.

Another major issue with this book is that, in spite of its title, it is not about the Oregon Trail. Parkman went no further than the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and he did all in his power to dissociate himself from the pioneers moving along the Oregon Trail. If you are looking for a history of the trail, this book will not satisfy your needs.

However, in spite of the misleading title and the prejudices that surface throughout the book, it is still a fine piece of writing that opens up a world that has been lost to today's readers. Read it and enjoy your travels into another time and place.

5 out of 5 stars Parkman the master of Historians.......2006-09-01

In a day when "historians" make comment on the long dead or events from the confines of their apartments, Francis Parkman is the person who actually experienced the history he wrote about. There is no political correctness in Parkman and he describes savages, French, frontiersmen and Mormons exactly as they were without apology.
This work is a masterpiece everyone should read and be a guidebook to modern historians who spend more time working a political end and getting in the way of history rather than letting history tell it's truthful tale.
Parkman is not just the historian or recorder of events. He is the bard of Sioux myth, the geologist, biologist and countless other things describing flora, fauna and weather. He is complete in having that air of Boston social elite in beginning his journey and returning from the plains an American having tasted, smelled and breathed the savage world and revealed the eastern thoughts on how that world would evolve for the next 60 years.
Parkman is remarkable and the best compliment for this book is to recommend that readers search for other Parkman histories to read as they are real.
I am currently in his wonderful Montecalm and Wolfe series on the history of Canada which actually created America. If you have children, share Parkman's history with them as he will make it come alive for them.
As you can see by all of the lengthy reviews, Francis Parkman invokes a great deal of thought and emotion in his histories which transfers to the reader.

4 out of 5 stars Generally exciting account of the Oregon Trail.......2005-12-04

The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman is an account which further enforces the history of the Oregon Trail we had learned about in [U.S. History] class. The book portrays what it must have been like to travel on the Trail, never knowing what the next day would bring. The buffalo hunting which took place throughout the book became monotonous and boring after the first exciting few, but other than that repetitiveness, the journey was well depicted. I especially enjoyed Parkman's in-depth descriptions given to the reader of the people he meets on his journey and his observations on their actions as well. His vivid imagery of scenes from nature such as animals, prairie landscapes, and the weather, place the reader right next to Parkman in his adventuresome expedition. There are some dull, repetitive points in the observations made by the author, but aside from that his autobiographical telling of his journey is unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for a Reason.......2005-03-12

The Oregon Trail still stands as a classic of American literature and of a rapidly vanishing past. Written as an account of a summer he spent traveling the Oregon Trail, Parkman captures the details of communal Native American life with no sentimentality, just hard reality. Even though written in 1846, Parkman is amazingly precise in his estimation of the vanishing frontier and Native American way of life. At times, he is rather callous toward the Native Americans, but this also reflects his times and environment. Highly recommended.

Book Description

The papers call Maude notorious. But 12-year-old Sallie knows her big sister didn't do the things the stories say . . . not on purpose anyway. In fact, she and Maude have made a fresh start and are trying to live on the up-and-up. But just when the girls are settling into their new life, Maude is arrested—and before you can say "jailbreak," the orphaned sisters are back on the run!

In the sequel to the critically acclaimed The Misadventures of Maude March, Newbery Honor winner Audrey Couloumbis once again takes on a dizzingly fast, delightfully rowdy, and altogether heartwarming ride through the old west—proving that half the fun of any journey is the getting there.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another fast paced adventure with Maude and Sallie.......2007-10-05

This books tells the continuing story of 16 year old Maude March from her 12 year old sister, Sallie's, point of view. This is definitely a second book; you REALLY need to read the first book in the series (The Misadventures of Maude March) to understand what is going on in this one. Maude and Sallie have settled in with their Uncle Arden. Maude and Sallie sent the money from the bank robbery back to the sheriff in Des Moines with a letter explaining how they were innocent. They keep waiting for Maude's name to be cleared while holding their breath every time a lawman walks by. Then, the unthinkable happens and Maude is arrested while Uncle Arden is out of town and it is up to Sallie and Marion to break her out of jail. Then the three of them are on the run again. A fun adventure story with a good bit of humor thrown in. I liked it very much.

    Book Description

When her husband is killed in a railroad accident, leaving no pension or provision for the future, Daisy Hopewell opens a bakery with her three sons and sells doughnuts in northern Utah Territory in 1869. With the help of friends in the Union Pacific Railroad, Daisy secures a great location for her bakery at Promontory Point. Everyone converging on the Utah plains knows that when the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroad lines join, history, as well as fortunes, will be made.

The Hopewells just want enough profit to pay off some bills. Alex, the oldest, believes it is his responsibility to take care of his mother and his brothers. But nothing is simple. His younger brother Cyrus shirks his responsibility by trying to dream up new-fangled contraptions, a blonde-haired girl complicates Alex’s life, and some menacing gunmen hide a mysterious package at the family’s bakery. In the midst of almost losing everything, the Hopewells find that the Lord has had a plan all along, a plan that is even more exciting than the historic event they are allowed to witness in this final installment of the Adventures on the American Frontier series.

The story follows Tom as he travels West to find his uncle with a band of comrades in Colorado's Rocky Mountain wilderness questing a gold mine. They are all pursued across the Bad Lands by Indians, overcome by a snowstorm in the mountains, and run down the unexplored Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. 5 out of 5 stars True History.......2000-07-11

This book, although fiction, is true history. It was written by Henty in 1894. It's a classic adventure novel right up there in the ranks of Swiss Family Robinson. Henty was an outstanding writer of his time. It's very easy to get lost in this book, I'd be suprised if anyone could read it without putting it down. It's full of references and dialect of days long gone by. I want to jump into a time machine and go live with Tom for a while and quit worrying about traffic and work. I am fortune enough to own an original 1894 hard copy of this book that was given to me by a family friend and will cherrish it for ever.

5 out of 5 stars This book is really exciting and informative........1999-02-26

This book presents a factual side of western history in an exciting way! That is very rare these days. From the first few pages, you are drawn in by young Tom's determination to join his uncle in Colorado and the dangers, joys, and sorrows he encounters along the way. I read this book in five days; it is an impossible put-down! All those who love history or just great stories will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good historical fiction for young people.......1999-07-19

I liked this book and will be using it this coming school year with my 5th grade students. It is an excellent book that focuses on self esteem, persistence, and acceptance of others with handicaps. However, it appears to be confusing for the fifth grade reading level. The advanced vocabulary and lack of flow because of the use of letters within the text makes me believe the reading level is probably at about eighth grade (12-14 years old). For younger students, it could be used with the teacher reading it to the students.

      Book Description

Gabe Young is an orphan. He barely survives in the unforgiving West by working for meals at mining camps and frontier towns. Then in 1860 he gets lost along the Humboldt River in northern Nevada Territory. He meets a girl, who takes him to her parents at a Pony Express station. With them Gabe finds a whole lot more than shelter and a meal. He discovers a father’s provision, a mother’s love, and a young girl’s interest. But most of all, he discovers God’s grace.

Gabe can hardly believe the family’s tender care for him, and when he gets a chance to help them, he rides several legs of the dangerous Pony Express trail with the news of Abraham Lincoln’s election and the impending Civil War. Gabe learns the power of prayer and love in this second installment of the Adventures on the American Frontier series.
