The European century.......2001-11-15
This is a lucid synthetic survey of Europe 1870-1970, paying attention to intellectual and social trends as well as political developments. Joll has an eye for the telling quotation and a firm grasp of the period. He was an excellent historian. Harper & Row (or whatever the firm is called now) should never have let this book go out of print.
Book Description
This fascinating, authoritative history describes the great political, economic, cultural, and social events that have defined the period, from the convulsive establishment of a French republic to the apotheosis of French national culture in World War I, from the acrimonious failure of the 1930s and the Occupation to France's resurgence as a central focus of postwar Europe. The book ends with President Mitterand's retirement, an epochal event that marked the severing of France's last link with the Vichy government and the Fourth Republic.
Book Description
Consider two polar images of the same medical condition: the pale and fragile Camille ensconced on a chaise in a Victorian parlor, daintily coughing a small spot of blood onto her white lace pillow, and a wretched poor man in a Bowery flophouse spreading a dread and deadly infection. Now Katherine Ott chronicles how in one century a romantic, ambiguous affliction of the spirit was transformed into a disease that threatened public health and civic order. She persuasively argues that there was no constant identity to the disease over time, no "core" tuberculosis.
What we understand today as pulmonary tuberculosis would have been largely unintelligible to a physician or patient in the late nineteenth century. Although medically the two terms described the same disease of the lungs, Ott shows that "tuberculosis" and "consumption" were diagnosed, defined, and treated distinctively by both lay and professional health workers. Ott traces the shift from the pre-industrial world of 1870, in which consumption was conceived of primarily as a middle-class malaise that conferred virtue, heightened spirituality, and gentility on the sufferer, to the post-industrial world of today, in which tuberculosis is viewed as a microscopic enemy, fought on an urban battleground and attacking primarily the outcast poor and AIDS patients.
Ott's focus is the changing definition of the disease in different historical eras and environments. She explores its external trappings, from the symptoms doctors chose to notice (whether a pale complexion or a tubercle in a dish) to the significance of the economic and social circumstances of the patient. Emphasizing the material culture of disease--medical supplies, advertisements for faraway rest cures, outdoor sick porches, and invalid hammocks--Ott provides insight into people's understanding of illness and how to combat it. Fevered Lives underscores the shifting meanings of consumption/tuberculosis in an extraordinarily readable cultural history.

Historical perspectives on tuberculosis and public health.......2001-04-18
Ott interweaves the changing understanding and treatment of tuberculosis with its natural companion, public health. There are a variety of stories here--that of researchers like Edward Koch (who discovered the bacillus) and public health reformers like Charles Chapin and C-E. A. Winslow. The housing of consumptives, in such places as sanatoriums, merits a chapter, and methods of nursing and care. Though the book is arranged thematically and not chronologiaclly, it is the story of our understanding of TB from the mid-19th century to the present. The book does not focus on the medical or scientific aspects of the disease, however (though they are mentioned) but rather, Ott's point seems to be that TB is not a definable illness by modern standards, but something that is changing continuously, as are our methods of dealing with the disease. "Fevered Lives" offers some interesting perspectives on the history of public health and TB, and is a well written book on the history of medicine for those not in the profession.

Book Description
Here, John Keiger examines the subtle forces that have shaped France's international relations, from material aspects such as geography, demography, and economics, to more abstract features of France's national identity such as the notion of state and the impulse to spread French culture. The first study of its kind in English, the book is divided into thematic chapters that include discussions of how foreign policy is formulated and executed, the nature of strategy and defence, France's allies and adversaries, cultural diplomacy, and an assessment of French espionage. A final chapter examines France's position in the post-Cold War era, its adjustment to the new international system, and the extent to which old mentalities persist or have been resurrected.

Where-to site guide to 200 of the best birding areas in Texas including detailed descriptions.
Customer Reviews:
Not too bad, not too good.......2001-07-04
I tested Birding Texas under field conditions last spring. I am sorry to say that many maps are of limited use as are the descriptions to get to the places. You only need it if you like to go to places that are not covered by the two ABA/Lane guides currently available. For the Texas coast and the Rio Grande valley you'd better refer to the these two books.
Best travel guide ever!.......2000-06-24
This book includes many of the out of the way places to bird, along with many local birding spots, that are not listed in past birding guides.
Marvelous! Contains more than just gudelines to the birds!.......1998-06-14
Birding Texas offers two additional pieces of information not usually available: (1) illustrations of Texas's 32 speciality birds, those not normally found in any other state, and each illustration includes info on where the species can best be found; (2) a distribution/ status checklist for all 10 regions throughout the state; first time ever and extremely helpful. This book is extremely useful for birders, both beginners and experienced alike, for finding all the birds, from northern cardinals to golden-cheeked warblers and lucifer hummingbirds, throughout the year.
Book Description
Detailed descriptions, maps, and photos lead the bird watcher to the more than 75 sites within a two-hour drive from Corpus Christi, Texas.
Book Description
Birding is booming. The hobby (or, in many cases, passion, or even addiction) has been growing steadily for years, according to studies conducted by both governmental and private organizations. An amazing number of people -- more than 70 million, by one 2001 survey of recreation preferences -- say they participate in birdwatching.
Undoubtedly, many of these people simply put feeders in their back yards and enjoy watching the hummingbirds, chickadees, and goldfinches that show up. But just as certainly, more and more birders are venturing out to discover the fun of seeing new birds in new places, whether it's a drive through a national wildlife refuge or a guided walk at a nature preserve.
Once someone has discovered the joys and challenges of birding, it doesn't take long to learn that there are places in the United States that experienced birders visit as surely as geese fly south in the fall. These spots are to birders what the Rockies are to skiers, or Pebble Beach is to golfers. Such a place is the region encompassing the Texas Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande Valley -- now the home of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a state-designated driving route connecting more than 300 birdwatching sites from the Louisiana state line to the Mexican border. Brown highway signs, marked with the profile of a Black Skimmer, point the way to these bird-rich destinations.
Exploring the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail examines highlights of this popular route: locations ranging from national wildlife refuges with tens of thousands of acres to small city parks to stretches of isolated road passing through birdy habitat. In this guide, expert birder/writer Mel White profiles more than 80 of the best sites along the trail, chosen for diversity of habitat, species, and seasonality; productivity; and accessibility. Site listings give general (and often specific) directions, contact information (including websites when available), advice about when and how to bird the location, and a listing of some of the notable species that might be found. Also featured are nearby museums, nature centers, festivals, and accommodations of particular interest to the visiting birder.

A Birding Extravaganza.......2007-02-24
"Big Years" as far as most birders are concerned almost always refer to an attempt to count how many different birds one can see nationally or even internationally in a specific 365-day period from January 1st through December 31st of a given year. Birders by their very nature are counters and it has become inevitable that for those with neither the time nor the money to fly from, say, the wilds of Alaska to the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico and back might decide to make careful records of the birds that they see in a more limited geographical area such as a particular state. Though this is a fairly recent phenomena, today such records exist for every state in the Union.
No state in the United States has a wider diversity of birds than Texas which has recorded more than 2/3 of the 900+ birds seen through North America north of Mexico. Beginning on January 1st, 2000, Mark Adams, the assistant director of the University of Texas' McDonald Observatory and an ardent birder, set out to break the Texas record for sightings and by year's end he had done just that with a grand total of 489 different birds having been seen. This quite enjoyable volume recounts Adams' adventures throughout the state as traveled from the Gulf Coast to the Lower Rio Grande Valley to the Panhandle and then down to Big Bend National Park--all while still trying to hold down a full-time job. His successes were many; his failures few and far between even though he frequently laments having missed a rare species here or there.
Adams writes in an easy-to-read, enjoyable style. He captures, as ABC-TV used to say on one of its most famous sports programs, "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" but he does so in such a careful way that most readers will want to read more and more. Chasing Birds Across Texas is, however, a speciality book. Any one who cares about birds, especially the wonderful diversity of them to be found in Texas, will love this book and find it quite fascinating. Non-birders, on the other hand, will probably wonder at Adams' sanity and be bemused by why a grown man would care about the difference between a Blue Bunting and a Blue Mockingbird or would drive hundreds of miles in the hopes of seeing either.
A good read for birders.......2006-02-01
This book will be of interest to all birders and specifically for those who aspire to increase their life lists. In a well written volume, Mark Adams describes how to use hot lines, gossip, patience, dedication, persistence, and the aid of friends to see birds (and still keep your job). He comes across as a good person to join on a field trip, and the book contains lots of information about birding hot spots in Texas.
" where there is variety, there is challenge and opportunity".......2005-01-17
If you like Birding ,you're gonna love this book.First I would like to point out another book."A Big Year" by Mark Obmascik, see my review dated 27 March 2003.This book was about three guys who set out to set a new record of seeing the most species in North America in one year;also a great read.
Now we got a similar book by a fellow who sets out to break the rcord of seeing the most species in Texas in one year. One big plus with this book is that it is written by the guy who did it,and has a much greater personal touch to it.
Of all the birders who would like to do such a feat, few are fortunate enough to actually do it.
Mark has really done the right thing here when he itimizes all the birds seen, and the ones he could have had,but missed.I criticized the other book for not doing this.Mark also included some great photos;but I would have preferred more on the characters he talks about even if that were done at the expense of some of the bird shots.A shot of Jimmy Sealy, for instance.
"I could enjoy the irreverent boys-in-the-woods atmosphere of
Brush's truck bed.Jimmy Sealy,for example,was always upbeat
and entertaining,an unapologetic,effusive American male
progressing from midlife towards retirement. In an e-mail
to trip participants prior to our arrival at the ranch,
Jimmy described himself to those who had yet to meet him:
"I'm short,fat,look like Boss Hog,have a full white beard,
and will be wearing the best looking gimme cap you have
ever seen.I'll have some Zeiss binoculars hanging around
my neck, will most likely be looking over your shoulder for
birds, and my right hand will be slightly cupped,as though
there should be a beer in it,and there may be."
Now there's a description of a character who begs a picture!
I'd also like to warn you, that if you're not very familiar with the layout of Texas, and also familiar with its birdlife;get a good map,a texas checklist and a good Field Guide handy, because you'll need them.
Don't let me scare you off;I've never birded in Texas, but plan to get there soon, to rack up just eight birds to get my list to 600.Reading this book makes me almost feel like I've been there;at least I know where I want to go.
Thanks Mark, you accomplished a great feat and shared it with us by writing a wonderful book.

Book Description
At the end of the twentieth century roughly 265 million people visited the 374 sites in the American National Park System. These places, designated and protected because of their significance to our nation's historical and natural heritage, contain some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States-landscapes that naturally lend themselves to outdoor recreation.
In this book, veteran parks interpreter Roland H. Wauer introduces the pleasures of birding in the national parks of the American Southwest. From California to Texas, from hugely popular destinations such as Arizona's Grand Canyon to the mostly undiscovered shores of Amistad National Recreation Area, Wauer visits fourteen sites and gives us his advice on what birds to expect and where and how to find them.
Birding the Southwestern National Parks is written for anyone visiting, or planning to visit, the following Southwestern parks:
* Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada
* Joshua Tree National Park, California
* Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada and Arizona
* Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
* Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki, and Walnut Canyon National Monuments, Arizona
* Montezuma Castle National Monument, Arizona
