Must have.......2007-09-23
If you are inexperienced to the world of writing this is a book you need to have to help you on that long journey
My Advice.......2007-07-29
I speak to audiences all over the country. After every speech there are always two or three people who come up and ask advice on getting published. I give them the customary talk about writing every day and having persistence in the face of rejection. I also tell every one of them to go home, get on Amazon and order Writer's Market.

It is a tool which may be of help .......2007-06-07
This work is a tool which may be of help to you as a writer. It is written in its introductory overview pages with , what seems to me, good sense and understanding. There is a lot of good advice about how to query, and where to look for markets, and how in general to approach the whole business of pursuing 'sales' of work. It is not a book which can tell you truly about how to write in a deep or interesting or uniquely individual way. That is not it's purpose.
But again I think it can be of help to many.
A couple of reservations from my own area of interest. Once they had a separate listing in the index on a topic which specially interested me "Judaism" . Now the publishers on Judaism are mixed up with the general Religion publishers.
I searched a couple of publishing houses I am thinking to send manuscripts to. The information provided was extremely scanty . But then again 'Writer's Market' does remind its user to supplement it by searching the websites of the publishers' listed.
Again it gives the rules and the etiquette for proper submission, gives information on pricing. It also includes some individual success stories from different areas of writing.
On the whole for the writer eager to sell work this is a work which truly may help.
Basic information for fiction and non-fiction writers.......2007-05-17
I found the Writer's Market 2007 Deluxe Edition by Robert Lee Brewer to be informative; however, I had already located another publication that led me to the sources that I sought for promoting MY book.
Nonetheless, the Writer's Market is now a part of my book publishing/marketing reference resources collection.
Also, regardless of which book/magazine used as a source of information, it is ultimately up to the individual(s) to do the "leg work," or delegate the efforts to someone/others, in their particular promotion efforts.
At any rate, I believe that the book is worth purchasing.

Writer's Market 2007.......2007-05-04
This is what I call the writer's bible as it includes a variety of marketplaces for your work. It's an essential book for all writers, published and unpublished.
It's a valuable research tool, and one that I encourage all of my students to purchase when they embark upon their writing careers.

Book.......2007-10-06
I ordered 2 books, I was immediately informed by email that one of the books was not available and the other would ship in about 10 days. The book came in ten days and was in perfect condition. All in all a pleasant experiance.
Guide to Literary Agents 2007.......2007-09-13
The book was informative and was what I needed. I will purchase the 2008 edition unless I get an agent before then for my novel.
Helpful for New Writers.......2007-08-16
As a writer with little experience in trying to find an agent, this book has been very helpful to me. The information is up-to-date and accurate in regard to all those agents I have queried. Most of the agents have responded to correspondence within the time frame stated in the book, and I also found the pointers on how to write a synopsis very helpful, although not all agents want a synopsis quite as long as the implied page length in the article. Overall, though, the book has helped me a lot.
Great Guide.......2007-08-08
These Writer's Digest guides are just indispensable. Though I have an earlier edtion of this work, the one edited by Rachel Vater, I feel I can safely say, they are astonishingly well organized and easy to use guides through what can feel like the labyrinthine process of finding an agent. There is so much more than just lists of agents in these books, you are sure to feel heartened, and quite professional as you gather knowledge of just what a winning query letter looks like, what it contains, and just as importantly, what it does not. Lists of conferences, and also articles that help you learn what you can expect from your agent, and she/he from you.
Another source of information among many...........2007-06-24
The purpose of the book is to use it as a GUIDE. It's a REFERENCE guide. Not a promise of getting an agent. Even an encyclopedia is dated just as soon it's published, but does that mean people should stop using it?
It's up to the writer to do the leg work. I match up agents that I've found on the web that are WGA(e)/WGA(w) signatory, but I don't have their complete submission guidelines. I cross reference information found on the internet with the book. Before I mail anything, I call (remember the book lists agents phone numbers) to ensure the requirements are still the same. If they are, I go forth and do great things. If not, I inquire about the correct requirements and still I go forth and do great things. If the number is wrong, I keep it moving by (x)ing that agent off my list ang guess what...I go forth and go great things.
Just remember, this book is not going to make an agent:
1. Open your submission. If an agent decides to not open your submission, what does that have to do with the book. NOTHING. The book can't make an agent open their mail.
2. Reject your submission.
3. Like your submission if they do read your query letter.
My recommendation is to get this book as soon as it's published for the new year. You can pre-order the 2008 edition now. Agents in the book, if they are new to the book, will usually have the most current information. It's always good to have other sources to cross reference the information found in this book.
Good Luck!
(PS. I think it's kinda of funny how the review below mine, states that a person can get their submission returned UNOPENED, then call to find out the guidelines have changed, so that's why it was returned UNOPENED. My question is...if the package is UNOPENED, how would the agent know the submission didn't meet the correct required guidelines?)
Hey that's not the book's fault...that's the writer's fault for NOT doing a thorough reference check before spending the money to mail off a package!

A Great Product!.......2007-10-17
I was rather pleased with the item which I purchased which was the Medical School Requirements Review Book for 2008-2009. The book arrived early and was brand new as stated. I did not have any complications and have nothing but good feelings about my purchase. I will definantly be a continuous customer.
Informative........2007-10-11
This book is well organized (grouping schools by state), and lays out all of the specs that "at a glance" profiles leave out. It's a good tool to use before visiting websites and digging deeper into what each school has to offer. I'd recommend it highly.
Must have!!!.......2007-09-28
This is a must have for any student going to med school! It tells requirements and interviewing process for each school and a little more information about them. Everything is right there in that one book!
beware of year, otherwise great.......2007-09-23
Be aware that when the book says "2008-2009", it refers to the first year of medical school that you would be applying to enter. So, it's what you would want if you begin applying in the summer of 2007. Otherwise, the book is very helpful, although I wish that it contained more information on the rank of the school.
Useful Resource.......2007-09-23
This is a very useful resource in the medical school application process. It gives essential information in an accesible format.
Book Description
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, the band Rush embarked on their R30 world tour in the summer of 2004, playing 57 shows for more than half a million fans. Drummer Neil Peart traveled between shows on motorcycle, logging 21,000 miles through 19 countries on both sides of the Atlantic. Part behind-the-scenes memoir, part existential travelogue, this book chronicles Peart's journey in search of the perfect show, the perfect meal, the perfect road, and an elusive inner satisfaction that comes only with the recognition that the journey itself is the ultimate destination.
Customer Reviews:
You don't have to be a Rush fan - but it helps.......2007-10-12
Some of the harshest critics that I have seen of Peart's books over the years have been those who described his writings as journals that seem to ramble from place to place. My first reaction to that position is that it's ridiculous, however, upon reflection, there is some truth there - but that is exactly the point. Roadshow continues his writings that for those of us that have followed his career come across as observations on life rather than meaningless ramblings. I would like to believe that even those that unfamiliar with his music would be able to enjoy this book; however, I'm sure that it helps to be one of those people that falls into the "I feel like he's a friend because I have followed his work for thirty years while in reality don't know him at all" category. The marketing plug: if you are a fan of the music, try one of the books.
Great read for Rush fans.......2007-09-28
Mom, when I grow up I want to be a musician - Well you know son, you can't do both.
I found it fun, informative, entertaining and reflexive. An excellent read for Rush fans that appreciate Neil's way to observe the world, his experiences and reflexions of being in 'the Limelight' while keeping his feet (and wheels) in the ground. He describes his job as "hitting things with sticks - big deal!" but since only mediocre men feel satisfied every day, keeps challenged to give the best show he can give. Fun anecdotes of how the band develops a strange relationship with fans through the years and how they recognize them and see them change, some others on how some fans can get disturbing. In any case, Neil is able to have a life among 'the mortals' and be recognized only occassionally during his motorcycle trips from city to city that he describes in ways that make you want to be in those places or appreciate those in which you've already been.
Good stuff!!!.......2007-09-28
Neil is a great writer. The story is great, just a narrative of a trip? No, Neil takes you there. He paints such a vivid picture, you'll feel like you are riding shotgun! This goes for the whole series. I think for being such a private dude, it's a cool way for the guy to share feelings, thought and philosophies. I don't feel like he was looking for pity, just an outlet. These books just might make a Rush fan out of you too, I warned ya!
Ah yes, another review by me. You're welcome........2007-09-16
Welcome to my wonderful second review ever. I have been practicing 2 to 3 hours a day on my reviewing skills. Drinking some protein shakes and eating lots of free range, organic, dolphin trained, tuna to bulk up.
Sadly, I haven't done any book reviews in my strenuous review regime. So, to get an idea on how to review a book, I read every single review for this book... Right...
I noticed two things. One, I agree with almost every review. The good and the bad. Ignore the stars my fellow reviewers give this book and just read a couple of good reviews and bad reviews and that's basically the book.
The second thing I noticed is something I thought every book reviewer should talk about but that not a single one did.
The book itself.
The books jacket has three very nice pictures on a nice glossy paper. There is also a nice little bit of writing inside the jacket about the book.
The actual cover of the book is of a grayish color with little raised ridges running down it. It also is an exact copy of the jacket itself. Well, if you replace all the colors with the grayish color. Get rid of the pictures. Take away a few lines of text and symbols. And they are EXACTLY the same.
Even though Amazon says this book weighs 1.4 lbs. I am going to have to go all out weatherman on this, and say it feels more like solid 1.8 lbs. More if you like reading on your back, holding the book over your head. I don't recommend reading it this way unless you have conditioned yourself for this task.
The font is easy to read but just a size too small for my tastes. But not a deal breaker. I can't help it if I am going blind and bald. It is very fine and precise with no smearing or runs of any sort in my copy. Although, there are some spelling errors here and there.
The paper is sturdy but not too thick. It has an off white, almost aged paper look to it. My hands are so calloused from my review training, that I cannot get a proper feel of the paper. I imagine it has a very slight rough texture to it though.
The book has a very understated musky odor. Only noticeable when I took a good honking sniff at close range. I could see this causing some discomfort to the sinuses if you were reading on your back, with the book over your head, and you passed out from the exertion. You might wake up with that smell in your nose which might be disconcerting.
At the beginning of every chapter is a little quote or joke. They are good sometimes. If you like to read a quick chapter before going to bed every night then you are out of luck with this here book. Unless you are some kind of freak speed reader. The chapters are sometimes quite long but lucky for you, they are broken up into subchapter type things.
Yeah, anyway, football is on and I hear my recliner calling me.
Neil, you "USED" to be my favorite drummer..............2007-09-14
Now your my favorite writer.........
I just finished three of your four books, and have gained alot of inspiration and insight. I'm planning to do a similar journey of my own, on a bike just like yours, with a journal on hand, from Orange County to the tip of Argentina. I'm saving your last book as reading material for the journey. When I finish the book Neil, I'm going to send you a copy. In the meantime, if I ever see you in person, I will simply smile and walk away. Thanks for everything. Love Drew

For the untrained observer, it can be quite a challenge to sort out the many trees that make up a stand of older forest in, say, New England or the Ozarks. This well-illustrated guidebook, covering 364 species, comes to the rescue with photographs organized in several ways: by, for example, the shape of the leaf or needle, by the fruit, by the flower or cone, and by autumn coloration. Following one visible characteristic or another, the reader can narrow the range of possibilities, then turn to an informative text that describes a tree's physical characteristics, habitat, and range. Many of the species covered are relatively rare, such as the "stinking cedar" of the Georgia-Florida border; others are locally abundant, such as the paper birch of the boreal forest, used to make ice-cream sticks; still others, such as the smooth sumac, are widespread. The guidebook also covers ornamentals introduced from other continents, such as the Chinese privet and Mahaleb cherry. --Gregory McNamee

Customer Reviews:
Great Guide that is ALMOST Perfect.......2007-08-18
I have always liked the Audubon Society Field Guides. This particular guide is great in the amount of color photos for sometimes easily identifying species in all seasons, whether from the fall leaves, bark, summer leaves, and the fruit it produces. Also the organization of the guide is very good. My cons below are NOT enough to prevent me from recommending this guide. Compared to other guides it's still the best.
CONS: The amount of information in the back is not always consistent. Also there still isn't always an easy way to differentiate some of the similar species (e.g. Oaks). In other words the pictures and/or the descriptions are not enough to distinguish like species.
helpful.......2007-07-03
Very much help for figuring out what trees we have and we have a lot. Pictures are very nice and cross reference if you aren't totally sure of what you are looking at. Very handy size too
Great Book.......2007-06-27
Every tree and every leaf that you can think of is in this book. Great clear pictures and the information is great. So glad I purchased this book for my husband. The equivalant to bird watching. Tree watching.
Information Packed.......2007-05-17
My new hobby is woodturning bowls so I bought this book to help me identify trees that supply my wood. Once I learned how to search the material, this book has been great fun and very useful. I take it with me when I walk my dog around the neighborhood to identify trees.

Not Just Names and Statistics.......2007-09-13
What I like about this book is that each agent gives a summary of their literary likes and dislikes, the kind of query letter they appreciate, and how to submit to them. I have a chance to see their personalities, not just what genres they represent. The features on writing a book proposal, advice for writers, web sites and other resources for writers are excellent. Odd platform for religion-bashing.......2007-08-19
If you are distracted or dismayed when an ostensibly unrelated article is used as a platform for spouting atheism or criticizing religious beliefs, then you should steer clear of this book. Hopefully, the next edition will achieve a higher level of professionalism.
Definitive Source!.......2007-07-05
As an aspiring author, I found Jeff Herman's Guide to Book Publishers, Editors, and Literary Agents as the definitive source for gaining credible traction in this industry. His candor and poignant input on the process of everything from how to write a query letter to the type of work specific literary agents are most excited in representing, is invaluable. Key insights into the nuances of the broad-based relationships required to navigate one's path in this interesting industry, has saved me an inordinate amount of time and effort and I've found his opinions to be self-evident. The various sections are well researched and are action-oriented, i.e. "do" and "don't do this!" I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in publishing a book and a good reference tool before you attend the next Book Expo!
Herman's Review.......2007-05-24
Great essays on the publishing world for both the first time author as well as the veterans. Very detailed, though not an extensive list, on the backgrounds on literary agents. Herman also includes the backgrounds on many of the publishing conglomerates as well as the independent publishers.I consider his book a 'must-have' for those trying to break into the publishing world. Between his and Joanna Masterson's Guide to Literary Agents, I was able to select many potential agents.
Simply the best..........2007-04-25
This book is simply the best - I found my first literary agent through it ten years or so ago and have never looked back since: reading this book (in its original editions) really did change my life and all the things that a book is supposed to do. Christopher Catherwood (author among other books of CHURCHILL'S FOLLY: HOW WINSTON CHURCHILL CREATED MODERN IRAQ and A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST, both Carroll and Graf). So see if this edition changes your life as much as the 1997 one did mine.

Customer Reviews:
Massive volume is somewhat intimidating but full of good data.......2006-11-21
I am on my last college searching tour: my youngest, a junior, is in the midst of mapping out her have list of cearly choices, and we are going through quite a few of the college search books.
"Petersen's Four Year Colleges - 2007 Edition" (2,922 pages--it should be sold "by the pound"!) is essentialy 2 books in 1. The first 1000 pages of the book present a summary of about 2,200 colleges around the US. On the average, all colleges get about half a page description. Very helpful is that the colleges are lumped state-by-state, because, let's face it, many many college students remain in their home state. The second part of the book is a more in-depth (two pages) profile of about 1,000 colleges. It is important to understand that those in-depth profiles are NOT written up by the book's editors, but instead by the colleges themselves (and the colleges have paid for this placement).
I found the book more useful that my daughter did. For one, because the book is so huge and outright heavy, it's not particularly user-friendly. That said, there is no denying that there is tons of great information to be found in this book, including at the end of the book 200 pages of colleges by major (which is VERY helpful if you are into a specific area of interest--as an example, you can major in "Textile Science" in only 3 colleges around the country), as well as by entrance difficulty and cost ranges.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for someone going on a road trip.......2007-10-11
I read all the reviews after I had orgered the book so it was with some trepidation that I sat down to page through it. 4 hours later I was tempted to grab my car keys and head out the door on the road trip of a lifetime. Even if you arent planning a road trip this book will leave you pondering how you can work one into your year.
1000 Places to Eat Before You Die.......2007-10-08
Let me get my chief complaints out of the way first: this author loves to eat. It sometimes seems that every other entry is a restaurant or local culinary hot-spot, from "Cheese Country" to "Big Pig Jig." These are not destinations, they're cuisines. Subtract those, and you probably have a book better titled 900 Places to See Before You Die. (Assuming all the eating doesn't kill you at number 600.)
Another minor quibble: some of the "places" are actually events, like Burning Man and the Indianapolis 500. I'll overlook it...
She also likes to go in style, and apparently hasn't met a spa she didn't like. Subtract all the ultra-ritzy exclusive hotel/spas, sculpture gardens, resorts, dude ranches and expensive art galleries, which are likely either of out reach financially or simply not of interest to a large base of the potential audience, and you're down to 500 Places to See.
So, then, if you can get it for half price, you've got a bargain.
Now, onto the good things. There are many, despite my protestations above. First is the very idea of the book. It's fun and interesting to see such a list compiled; invariably something important gets left out, but what is created by the greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts compilation is a true sense of America as a destination in its own right, worth of as much attention as any other in the world.
Also, I was made aware of many places I wouldn't have found otherwise, like the Yoder Popcorn Shoppe in Topeka, Indiana. There are many hidden treasures in these pages.
Finally, despite being top-heavy with attractions for the chic looky-loo set as mentioned above, the book is saved from being completely out of touch by its inclusion of attractions that appeal to a broad section of people (as would befit a book about America). Burning Man Festival is here, as is the State Fair of Texas, the Civil Rights Trail, and others.
My strong recommendation is that a second book be created called "1000 Places to Dine Before You Die," (though the publisher may not want to have the words "dine" and "die" so close together), and all the restaurant entries removed from this and placed there. Then the gap filled with what got left out of this book and should have been in in the first place.
not worth.......2007-09-20
This is the book you buy and never read. A must-have, but not worth a read...

This book is fine but all the information provided can be found easily online. I would have enjoyed it more had they interviewed locals during the research stage, and found locations that I couldn't just find on the internet.
