Elegant explanations and examples.......2007-09-27
This guide was an easy read since the subject was broken into easy pieces for digestion. I was especially pleased with the literary examples of many classic and contemporary authors, which made obvious the understanding of principles explained in each chapter. This book substantially lifted my confidence in fiction writing technique.
As great as the first book! Get this one too!.......2007-08-25
This is just as great as the first book, Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell. If you liked the first one- you will love this! It really helps you to find your characters and its interesting to read.
Unlike Plot and Structure, Character Emotions and Viewpoint does have a few swear words in their examples. I dont like those, but if you want to understand this topic its worth it!
Loads of information and very easy read . . ........2007-07-26
This book is loaded with great information for all those aspiring authors who need a hand with developing memorable characters. It's very helpful and an extremely easy read.
Another great book in a must have series of books.......2007-03-30
I picked up what I thought would be a rehashing of old material covered in other books on the same subject, but The Great Fiction series of books continues to impress and surprise.
So many books on creating characters speak to their physical description, wants, motives and give the character a background. This book goes a step further and tells you how to do those things and hits the key point of showing emotion.
In addition, chapter Eight titled "Talking About Emotion -- Dialogue and Thoughts" was worth the price of the book alone.
Other great topics were "Showing Change in Your Characters" and "Frustration -- The Most Useful Emotion in Fiction."
Like the other books in the series, Appendix A recaps the author's critical points. Thus for the impatient reader, jump to this appendix and read what the book is about. For those of us who enjoy the journey of the reading the previous 200+ pages, the appendix is a nice summary.
Overall, this felt like the first book that brought all the concepts of characterization into one place and provided me with an easy to follow roadmap to creating, deepening and SHOWING my characters off in my story.
My recommended characterization plan:
1) Read this book as a guide on how to breath life into your characters and what you are trying to accomplish with your characters. (Characters are not there by accident!)
2) Pick up The Marshall Plan of Novel Writing by Evan Marshal or First Draft in 30 Days by Karen Weisner. Both of these books take many of the concepts listed in this book and put them into templates and forms you can fill out to plot your novel
3) Write. Write. Write.
Don't do what I did and spend the last ten years reading more on writing than actually writing. Get that first 1 million words written asap!!
While you are doing it, read this book, which has found a permanent place on my book shelf as a handy reference and reminder of what makes a successful cast of characters.
excellent.......2007-02-28
A book to read and re-read with extensive advice for making your characters merit their inclusion. I found each topic to be concisely dealt with and particularly liked the final chapters on writer's block and editing.

Book Description
The study of emotional expressions has a long tradition in psychology. Although research in this domain has extensively studied the social context factors that influence the expresser's facial display, the perceiver was considered passive. This book focuses on a more recent development that recognizes that the perceiver is also subject to the same social rules and norms that guide the expresserâs behavior, and that knowledge of relevant emotion norms can influence how emotional expressions shown by members of different groups are perceived and interpreted. Factors such as ethnic group membership, gender, and relative status all influence not only emotional expressions but also the interpretation of emotional expressions shown by members of different groups. Specifically, the research presented asks the question of whether and why the same expressions shown by men or women, members of different ethnic groups, or individuals high and low in status are interpreted differently.

Fantastic Book.......2006-03-31
Without a doubt, this is one of the best self-help books I've ever read. Right away it gets down to the nitty-gritty of why people are really angry. This book guides you down paths and shows you things you might not have known that have been fueling your anger.
Although it describes the types of anger and what it does to you and your relationships with others, it is a while before you get to what should be done about it.
The Angerobics workouts at the end of each chaper are thoughtful and down to earth. However, my favorite part of this book is in the last few chapters where it discusses anger at the world. What if you're not angry at one person or small group, but a large organization, or even a government? Even better, what if you are mad at God? The book covers all those points and gives you real world solutions to help you move on with your life.
This is an excellent book for anyone with anger issues, especially those stemming from other problems or losses. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve him/herself.
Excellent.......2005-09-21
very good book and still reading through it and trying to understand and will pass it on
lots of helpful examples and scenarios .......2005-05-28
What I like most about this book is its underlying premise that everyone is worthy of respect and no one needs to live under a cloud of anger. Furthermore, these authors express a belief that it's possible to get free of old patterns learned early in life, and not pass them on to others. And they also tell us that it is possible to get rid of, or at least control, physical effects of anger, like overeating or high blood pressure, through these pretty easy techniques they outline. These are very empowering themes and they are presented in an accessible and engaging way in this book.
The writing is supportive, benign, amusing at times, informative, and, I think, very helpful. The book is set up with illustrations and exercises and room for notes ("Mad Pad"). Whether you actually do the exercises or not, I found it interesting and thought-provoking to read them.
The authors provide numerous examples of ways people feel, things they say, and situations in which anger comes up. I could relate to lots of their examples. They give some analysis of each situation, and suggest ways to deal with in a positive and affirming way. I found it engaging and pleasant to read, and I think the simplicity of the language they use makes the suggestions easy to implement.
This reminded me of one of my other favorite books, How to Talk so Kids Will Listen--and Listen so Kids Will Talk, by Adele Faber. These two titles share the basic idea that if you treat yourself and others with respect, you will be treated that way. I would happily recommend both books.
Best anger-management book I've read.......2005-05-25
In clear easy to understand prose, this book explores anger from every angle, giving many examples, exercises, and suggestions for recognizing one's rage, dealing with it, and transforming it into serenity and compassion. Especially enjoyable and helpful are the wonderful cartoons by one of the co-authors, Peaco Todd. Her colorful drawings and humorous take on the subject provide the perfect accompaniment to this very hot and sensitive subject. Highly recommended.
Have fun while you learn how to cope with your anger!.......2005-05-24
Are you a parent? Do you commute through obnoxious traffic? Does your mate do inexplicably irritating things on a daily basis? Pick up this fun book and realize that you're not alone AND that there are many positive ways to respond to the inevitable challenges to your daily equilibrium. A great read that's full of insight, humor, and ideas that require some work to implement, but then you can't expect to deal with this subject without some work on your part!

Climb On! Dynamic Strategies for Teen Success Review.......2006-08-03
This is a great story to encourage teens to reach for their full potential, trust in the adults that love them most, and strive to help others in return. Leadership, teamwork, and self reliance are major themes throughout. Mr. Beede presents a compelling story, good reading for kids older than 12 years. At his motivational presentation he creates an atmosphere of excitement and positve participation from his audience. I have heard the thunderous applause and cheering from transfixed young audiences on several occasions. Only two questions...when will John Beede's next book be published and where can I hear him speak again? E. Manning, teacher

Book Description
Presented here for the first time is the idea that emotional development is "self-organizing." It replaces older ideas that genes or environments "control" the process of development. Self-organization is one aspect of a revolutionary approach to science that embraces "chaos theory" and the new "science of complexity." Physicists, chemists, biologists, and other scientists see self-organization as a significant way of explaining patterns in nature.

Emotional, Development, and Self-Organization: Dynamic Systems Approaches to Emotional Development.......2007-08-27
This is excellent for anyone interested in human behavior or self improvement. It combines the research information from psychology and from system dynamics.
Book Description
Grand theories in psychology, you might think, have been out of fashion for quite some time. However, since its inception in the early 1980s, reversal theory has attracted a great deal of professional attention and scholarly interest has seen rapid growth in recent years. Demystifying behavior, cognition, emotion, motivation and what it is to be a person, reversal theory is a revolutionary take on the psyche of man. Including chapters on past research and where the future is headed, this book represents its most concise and complete statement to date.
Customer Reviews:
Updated description of Reversal Theory.......2007-09-03
This book and another Michael Apter book, Metamotivational Styles in Everyday Life, are the two required texts for understanding this complex and extremely useful psychological theory. Reversal theory finds application in a diverse, multidisciplinary landscape of research, practical application, and just darn good reading. I preordered mine in anticipation of the update. As soon as the UPS man brought it, I read it cover to cover in one sitting eschewing food and sleep. Well worth a careful read!

Packed with practical exercises.......1999-10-28
In these times of constant change, emotions can no longer be politely stifled. They are constantly at the surface; but, the good news is that they can be harvested into a positive force for building a more vigorous organization and enhancing one's own job satisfaction. This book is packed with examples, practical exercises, and tools for training that will help improve individual and team performance; reduce interpersonal conflict and barriers to cooperation; integrate feelings and facts when making business decisions; develop managerial skills of facilitation, communication, and leadership; motivate employees to take more responsibility. Each chapter provides questions to ask and specific actions to take to help one's colleagues banish forever such common barriers to participation as hierarchy issues, career problems, lack of cooperation, destructive management styles, and jaded skepticism.
She takes the issue of "emotion" out of the closet and names erroneous assumptions we tend to have about them. The point is made that there are no secrets: emotional needs always express themselves one way or another. This is her first principle of emotion. There are seven others: 2) Anger is an expression of need; 3) Our feelings and needs are not wrong or bad; 4) Emotions are the gateway to vitality and feeling alive; 5) We can address emotional issues and still save face; 6) Immediate reactions to problems often disguise deeper feelings; 7) We must clarify individual needs before problem solving with others; 8) We need to express positive feelings and communicate negative ones. These are thoroughly discussed.
Other chapters address issues of fear, hidden agendas, "hot buttons" creating conflict, corporate craziness (Ed. Note: On the this editor's favorite chapters), changing relationships between managers and employees, aligning organizational needs and individual talents, gaining commitment to change, and revitalizing the manager's role (Ed. Note: An excellent chapter for outlining a manager's new job in an environment committed to quality).
This book is written for managers at all levels as well as senior corporate executives and their staffs. It can't help but to enhance communication and teamwork and help overcome obstacles of poor communication and fear.
Comment: Organizational politics and human emotions are a virtually unknown and volatile territory in the recent and not so recent history of the American workforce, especially the issue of physician behavior in a healthcare environment. This is an outstanding, readable, "nuts and bolts" book with outstanding exercises for dealing with real issues right now. It is a welcome and much-needed volume that supplies a wonderful compass for addressing natural human emotional and resistance issues in an organization's quality transformation.

Book Description
A crowd-mind emerges when formation of a crowd causes fusion of individual minds into one collective mind. Members of the crowd lose their individuality. The deindividuation leads to derationalization: emotional, impulsive and irrational behavior, self-catalytic activities, memory impairment, perceptual distortion, hyper-responsiveness, and distortion of traditional forms and structures. This book presents unique results of computational studies on cognitive and affective space-time processes in large-scale collectives of abstract agents being far from mental equilibrium. Computational experiments demonstrate that the irrational and nonsensical behavior of individual entities of crowd-mind results in complex, rich and non-trivial spatio-temporal dynamics of the agent collectives. Mathematical methods employ theory and techniques of cellular-automata and lattice swarms, applied algebra, theory of finite automata and Markov chains, and elementary differential equations.
