Customer Reviews:
Not for use on the PE exam.......2007-05-14
I purchased this book so I could use it on the Professional Engineering exam. This book did not provide the relevant definitions I was hoping it would have. I would reccomend looking for a different book.
Only includes the most common engineering terms.......2006-05-26
This dictionary contains many common terms, but if you are an engineer and are looking for a word you don't already know, you will not find it here. I bought this book to take with me for the PE exam, there were a few words on the exam that I was not familiar with, none of them were in this dictionary.
Convient.......2005-09-26
I think, this is the most safe way to have need matterial specially book from a reliable source.
A Good Resource for the PE Exam.......2003-05-01
I found the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Engineering to be a valuable resource when taking the Chemical Engineering PE Exam (Principles & Practice of Engineering). Having this resource with me on Exam Day enabled me to bag several of the 80 questions that I probably would have missed otherwise.
The publication lists a lot of acromyms, many of which don't appear as such in the index of Perry's Handbook, or in the indices of any of my textbooks.
Even if you decide it's not much good for anything else, it's still worth the purchase price just to have it with you on Test Day.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......2002-05-30
Other web sites may praise this reference as a must for the PE exam, but I did not find any words in this book that would have helped me on the exam. ...

Flawed but Useful In Conjunction with Newton's Telecom.......2007-06-08
This has come in handy on several occasions, especially if there is something that hasn't been completely covered in Harry Newton's Telecom Dictionary. If you are picking between the two, definitely, absolutely go with Newton's - the information is more sound and easier to find. However, the McGraw-Hill Illustrated is a good supplement to Newton's.
Well Written AAAA ++++.......2005-03-29
This book is very well written and contains all the basic information I have needed since starting a new job in DSL repair. I have other reference books such as Newton's and the Telecom Crash Course, but I find this one is more practical. It is easy to follow, and it has been a life saver! I am looking forward to a 5th edition!
Sub-standard, very disappointed........2004-10-20
Not a well thoughtout and often incomplete in many areas of today's telecommunication. Its volume does not justify its contents. Recommend Newton's telecom dictionary instead.
Often incomplete and sometimes inacurate.......2004-09-20
The best parts of the book are its explanations of telephony plant. When the book attempts to explain larger industry topic and operational support, it becomes very vague and at times quite inaccurate. Is good book to give you an idea about the telephony industry, but don't quote it!
lacking in substance and difficult to use.......2003-07-14
I work as a technical writer for a telecommunications company that markets enhanced directory assistance in the wholesale and retail markets. Since my primary audiences are engineers and technicians, I write about and have to understand the technical aspects of how switches, telephony, and telecommunications applications function. About this dictionary (the 3rd edition), though it appears to have many definitions, when you look into it, it's amazing how many concepts it does not cover. For example, it has very poor coverage of SS7 terminology. Further, McGraw-Hill writers don't seem to understand that people often refer to the same concept using slightly different terminology so the dictionary lacks "see also" references. This is an area where Newton's shines. Even if the term is in the McGraw Hill, it's hard to find. I was excited about the CD-ROM, but it's a only PDF file of the hard copy manual. The PDF does not include any search functionality beyond what the book offers itself. The CD-ROM would be much more worthwhile if it took advantage of modern-day help system technology to make an online document with advanced search features and multimedia presentations, neither of which are difficult to create. Overall, the McGraw-Hill dictionary has definitely not been worth its price. If you're looking for substance and ease-of-use, buy Newton's.

Somewhat disappointing but a good reference.......2007-03-07
I had already a dictionary of science, a dictionary of physics
and a dictionary of philosophy.
Over a long period of time they have been helpful as references.
With the Internet available to search dictionaries like this have to provide a service
that is useful or they will not be bought.
I have this book now and I'll use over the long term,
but I wouldn't buy it again ...
I wouldn't have gotten this except I misplaced my good astronomy book
and needed a good look up reference for everyday.
McGRAW-HILL COULD DO A LOT BETTER!.......2003-03-25
If you need to know how to pronounce "telescope", its here. But no definiton. And no entry for Maksutov or any other type of telescope. Many satellites and asteroids are here, but very few star names. I guess they are too hard to pronounce. All the constellations appear to be here but not the possessive forms which can be tricky to pronounce. Solar activity, solar day, solar max, solar month, solar sail, and hundreds of other simple terms are here but nothing on interferometry. You get the idea. This book would be of very little help while reading a history of astronomy or a book on telescopes or even an astronomy periodical. For some one like me who has been an amateur astronomer for 40+ years and lives far from population centers this book is a disappointment. I still have trouble with many pronounciations and was hoping for some help. This book is a start, but you will need help from many other sources.

Customer Reviews:
This book helped me to stay current........2000-07-31
There are so many Telcomm terms and there are more every year. It's always good to have a easy-to-read technical reference book like this one. It's easy to read even for a Taiwanese! :-)
Btw, I hope there will be revised version of this book every two or three year. Thank you Mr. Muller, the author of the book, for providing the nice book.
Clear non-technical descriptions of telecomunications terms........1999-02-06
Clear, non-technical descriptions of telecommunication terminology and concepts are what the reader can expect from this title. It covers LANS, WANS, voice, data, and standards.
All telecommunications developers and engeeners must have it.......1999-02-05
This book it's has to be in every engeener desktop and also it's a great dictionary for universities stands and for students tools.
Strongly recommended; good value........1998-02-27
This is a remarkably good reference work, especially considering (or because?) it is the work of one person (and no doubt a good editor). The articles are long enough to cover complex topics yet focused enough to provide a handle on the subject. Muller has an excellent sense of proportion. He offers succinct synopses of technical matters without getting bogged down in stuff only an engineer would understand. You can get a quick overview of "distance learning" and "outsourcing," on the one hand, or PCS 1900 and CDMA on the other. And all of it is very well and clearly written. Useful for anyone in the industry, or just for the curious.
